wait guys the shattered realms is totally literally just a ya game of thrones like
destin karn - tyrion
jenna bandelow - daenerys
evan strangward - probably the greyjoy girl idk
lila byrne - arya
alyssa ana’raisa - robb
jarat - joffrey
hal matelon - unsure oopsie.
marin karn - tywin
breon d’tarvos - bram
ash sul’han - john
but yeah it’s like. the north is the north and the “good” side (to some extent) in both books. seven kingdoms in both books. arden is like the lannisters. they’re both the kingdom in the north with wolves as a symbol and weird magic and shit. idk. very similar but the shattered realms is less sex and gore

Second series down! (8 out of 35)
Tumblr media
When I first saw the cover and read the synopsis for Flamecaster, I was SO excited. The Seven Realms, even after ten years, is still one of my favorite series. To be gifted with a whole sequel series - to get even just a little more story about these characters I’ve grown to love, to get to meet their kids and get to explore the Realms more - I was elated!
Within the last year or two, I made the decision to not read a series before the last book was released. Flamecaster came out before I made that choice (and may have been one of the books to push me to it), so the first time I read it, I was sitting in the doctor’s office waiting to be seen. Three chapters in, and hit me right in the feels: major character death. I took a few days before diving back into the book, but once I did, I enjoyed it, and it made me look forward to the rest of the series.
Fast forward to 2020 (*makes sign of the cross*). I’m finally ready to read the whole series together. I reread TSR to re-familiarize myself with the story, loved it just as much as the first time around. When I was ready to pick up Flamecaster again, I was prepared to have my heart broken again. I was ready to git ‘er done!
So, Flamecaster, right? GOOD first book. A wizard healer who’s also an assassin? Oxymoronic, but I’m here for it. A rebellious young woman who likes to blow shit up, has a mysterious magemark on the back of her neck that gives her some cool powers, AND is fighting for her home against a tyrannical king? Tell me more! Bloodsucking, wizard-hunting priests? Gross, but intriguing. DRAGONS?!?! Honestly, could take them or leave them, but cool integration into the canon.
But as I got into the next books in the series, especially the last one, there were a lot of moments where I felt like I was just reading to get through the story, not really soaking anything in, not really enjoying the content. For example, Evan, the protagonist of Stormcaster, basically lives on a boat. Obviously, from his POV, gonna be a lot of boat stuff, but it felt kind of excessive at points. Like so much stuff about masts and riggings and sails and mizzens. I got lost a few times. Additionally, the overarching plotline revolves around a twenty-five-year long war, so there’s a lot of talk about battle strategies and tactics and stuff my brain just kinda glossed over.
Mostly though, I felt like there was a lot of exposition or build up that lead to one of the quickest resolutions I’ve ever encountered. This seemingly all-powerful antagonist introduced in book one is gone in a matter of seconds in the penultimate chapter of the last book and that’s it. No epic battle. No one fighting for their lives. Just here one second, gone the next. Arguably, could be comical but was more disappointing.
The Shattered Realms is beautifully written. Vivid imagery. Great example of world building. A variety of well-crafted characters. I’m always down for smart, strong, badass women, and Alyssa Gray is someone I should aspire to be. Again: dragons, named Splash and Slayer and Goat who were loyal and funny and taunting of 'puny humans'. There was espionage and deceit, wartime love and unlikely newfound friendships, family reunions and the loss of loved ones in more ways than one.
Overall, I’m glad I read it, and I did enjoy what I read. I’m glad I got to meet the kids and get conclusions to plot points left open in the first series. However, not sure if I’ll be picking it back up anytime soon. 3.5 out of 5.

Okay okay hear me out (litterally the one person who is in this fandom)
I love Ash with all my heart. He’s a dumb boi who runs away from his problems, is super smart, but also a dumbass (which I’m a sucker for).
I love Jenna with all my heart. She’s a badass who has a dragon and I love her more than I love myself (which is not hard but still).
But I don’t really ship them together (no hate to those who do tho).
THEY WERE SO RUSHED. There was really no development of their relationship nor was there any real interaction between the two of them except for a few times in Flamecaster (I know they will have some in Deathcaster but I’m not there yet). It seemed like one minute they were just meeting and the next they were declaring their love for each other. Not to mention, they didn’t really know each other did they? And I’m not talking about the fact that Jenna didn’t know Ash’s name, no I’m talking about the fact that they didn’t know anything about how they saw life and how they loved and we’re still like “we’re in love”.
It also felt just a little cliche to have the two main characters of the first book fall in love with each other for no particular reason other than that the way it should go.
Compare that to the others (destin and Evan, lyss and Hal etc. who’s relationships we’re also a little bit rushed) Jenna and Ash didn’t have as much depth as destin and Evan who know each other better than anyone not through facts about their past but through their emotions and their ability to be free with each other (which we never really got to see from Jenna and Ash). AND Destin and Evan were and always will be friends - even though the were never really “just friends” they had that bond of friendship through their relationship.
I love them and I think that maybe they could have good potential but with what we were given I don’t really think that they are one of my ships
Also I am only like half a page into Deathcaster so if there is anything that is involved in that that can dispute any of that let me know (the one other person in this fandom)!

Hey everyone shattered realms infodump post/basics about it to convince ppl to read it!!
Summary/Intro to characters:
The Shattered Realms is a four book fantasy series covering different converging conflicts within the world of the Seven Realms. There are eight main characters who give narration in various chapters across the four books.
When the Shattered Realms starts, two of the nations within the Seven Realms have been at war for 25 years. One of these nations is the Queendom of the Fells, while the other is the Kingdom of Arden. The war started when Queen Raisa of the Fells rejected a marriage proposal from King Gerard of Arden.
Two of the main characters are the children of Queen Raisa and her consort, the High Wizard Han Alister.
Adrian sul’Han, aka Ash, is a wizard healer who’s been secretly training at the wizard school that’s located on neutral ground near Arden. He spends his summers as an assassin in Arden.
Alyssa ana’Raisa, aka Lyss, is the next in line to the Fellsian throne, and serves as an officer in the Fellsian army. She’s skilled at fighting and military strategy, but she has a short temper and feels awkward in political settings.
While wizards are accepted in the Fells, they are persecuted in Arden. The king of Arden has continued fighting his war against the Fells by branding it as a sort of crusade against the wizards in the Fells. In Arden, wizards are called mages, and they are forced to use their powers in service of the Ardenine army. Ardenine mages are controlled using collars, which are manufactured by people native to the Fells.
In order to acquire more collars, Arden’s king trades with a smuggler named Lila Barrowhill, who is one of the main characters. She is a mysterious girl, one of very few women and very few Southern Islanders to work directly with the king of Arden. She was raised by her mothers family of coastal smugglers. The identity of her father, however, is one of her most closely guarded secrets.
In Arden, there are only two mages who go uncollared. General Marin Karn, one of the King’s oldest and closest allies, and his son Lieutenant Destin Karn. Destin is another main character in the series. He is the spymaster for the king of Arden, but has his own secret agenda beyond spying for Arden. It is a well known fact that the Karns do not get along with each other.
In Arden, noblemen called thanes hold most of the land and power. The son of the thane Arschel Matelon is another one of the main characters. His name is Halston Matelon. He is a captain in the Ardenine army, well known for being a commander who values his soldiers’ lives and for rising up the ranks through his own talents. Hal is stationed by General Karn in the city of Delphi, presumably to slow Hal’s rise through the military ranks.
Delphi is a mining town controlled by Arden that was once independent. There is a strong underground rebel group there, who do a lot of destruction of Ardenine property. One member of this rebel group is a girl named Jenna Bandelow, who has certain abilities that help her in her work. She’s immune to fire, and can sometimes sense peoples thoughts, pasts, or futures when she touches them. She was born with a mysterious magical mark on her neck, but she doesn’t know what it means.
In Fellsmarch, there is a busker who shares a similar mark to Jenna. His name is Breon d’Tarvos, and he plays a foreign instrument called a jafasa. When he touches someone, or an object they loved, he is able to play a song from their heart that will enchant them. He also does not know what his mark means.
Across the ocean, in the coastal nation known as Carthis, an empress named Celestine Nazari rules. She is hunting for anyone with a mark like Jenna’s or Breon’s, for unknown reasons. Celestine rules all of Carthis except for one port city called Tarvos.
Most people in the Fells and Arden do not know much about Empress Celestine. The most infamous Carthian in the Seven Realms is a pirate named Evan Strangward. Strangward has magic that gives him control over the wind and seas. He’s known as the scourge of the wetlands, taking out Fellsian and Ardenine ships alike. But Evan has his own agenda beyond piracy that is not known outside of his inner circle…
The Shattered Realms are a high fantasy series, that explores themes of trust against all odds and the consequences of war. There’s political intrigue, battles, romance, and dragons. There are also canonically queer characters, and characters who are people of color. These books have been my favorites for a very long time! People who like Six of Crows or Cinda Willams China’s original series The Seven Realms will definitely enjoy this series.
Content warnings for this series include depictions of child abuse, drug usage, a brief (and not very descriptive) sex scene, and typical fantasy setting violence (for example sword fighting, poisoning, stabbing, etc).

Boyfriend’s Day, you know what that means
To Ash, Hal, Breon, Destin, Han, Dancer, Evan, Amon, Shadow, Finn (except not really cuz you did try to kill Julianna, but it wasn’t really you I guess) and Celestine’s current favorite Tarek, I appreciate every single one of you, and so do your significant others. You are all great boyfriends, and deserve the world.
Thank you for making our lives both easier and more hectic.
Sincerely, Jenna, Lyss, Sasha, Evan, Raisa, Cat, Destin, Annamaya, Aspen, Julianna, and me. Celestine doesn’t appreciate you enough, Tarek. So I will.
HAPPY BOYFRIEND’S DAY
(I reached the limit when I was tagging lmao why do people have so many different names in these books)
