Off topic but the director for the new Persuasion movie gave me such O vibes 💀 she said she changed so much from the book because she felt it was her job to give Austen a new audience and draw them to her... you mean Jane Austen books that have stood the test of time and have people from all generations adoring her books and movies needs a random white lady director to give her news fans while delivering a flop movie that a majority of Austen fans now hate? Where do I get this self confidence they possess 😭

Nonnie, I heard the worst things about it too. Seems like they thought Bridgerton works well, Fleabag works well, let’s mold those elements into a Jane Austen novel and enjoy the inevitable success. Except nope.

The thing about the new Persuation Netflix movie is, it's such a fundamental missunderstanding of Anne Elliot and her circumstance?? The most common comparisons I have seen are comparing this Anne to Emma Woodhouse and to Fleabag. Now, Emma is rich, she is educated, in almost every way she is supirior to her everyday surroundings and she knows it well. Part of her story is realising her potetial and despite all that, to not see herself as above those around her. That's why the book starts with her discovering matchmaking as her hobby and why she drops it in the end: it's arrogant. Her elevated station gives her a kind of fleabag vibe, especially paired with some of the absurd characters around her. Her smirking at the camera as her father is surrounded by 5 screens fits her character and her station. She has the confidence to assume the viewer is in on the joke.

Anne Elliot is sad. She is no ones favourite and those she is a favourite of don't always treat her kindly. She is filled with regret and pain. She has no reason to smirk at the viewer, because no one is in on the joke. Hell, there isn't even a joke - and if there were, she'd be at the bud of it. Anne Elliot withdraws to cry, then dries her tears and does what's right. She is not like Emma. She is not like Fleabag. Her pain is bigger than Emmas and her confidence is not at all comparative to Fleabags. I love the new Emma movie, while surely not perfect, it demonstrates a very thorough understanding of the characters involved and is a beautiful specatacle to behold. The new Persuation movie is just.... not it. Book report failed. To be honest, it makes me doubt if the people involved even read the book - one of Austens shortest novels!

I've been watching "Fleabag" and I still can't understand why Netflix tried to turn "Persuasion", of all things, into "Fleabag".

A Regency Fleabag has a lot of potential but I don't think any Jane Austen novels could work with that idea.
