Heya!

I'm still not feeling great, so I'm going to keep this one on the shorter side.

Thursdays are recommendation days! I'm not getting any commissions or affiliate stuff for anything I recommend (yet, maybe one day? I'll be sure to let you know if I do), but I do own a few of the things I want to share with you (as in, I bought them myself and I'd happily buy it again).

I have so many favorite things that help me write and be creative that it was hard to narrow them down to which one should be first, but ...

Vulgarlang

I love this website so flipping much! (I own the pro version)

I love language and I think I started my first constructed language (conlang) when I was 13 or so? There's just so much you can tell about a culture (and sub cultures! and individuals!) based on the words they use the most and what their slang is based off of and what they use to emphasize love and hate!

Vulgarlang is a site that generates constructed languages for you. The free/demo version (should be the page the link takes you to) gives you 200 words, which I think are picked at random. They have a basic paid version ($15 USD) that gives 2000 words and a pro paid version ($20 USD) that gives 4000 words, and yes, there's a way to make your language have more science fiction vocabulary or more fantasy type vocabulary! (just clarifying, sci Fi vocab is in the paid, pro version)

Ok, ok, I need to calm down, I've just had to undo about four paragraphs describing what this site does in detail. The short version (bc it's worth checking out for yourself):

It includes IPA pronunciations (which means you get an accurate/neutral example of how each letter sounds)

You get unlimited languages

You get full creative license to each language you generate (to use, not to sell)

Each language generates with is own grammar and phonology (for those of us that are into that)

You even get to use a tool they call Atlas, that helps you make auxiliary languages (which I think is like French is to Latin? But you need at least 2 languages to start)

Please go check it out, even if just for the free version, because there's no better way to add some subtle, yet powerful flavor to your world than to have your own private list of words that no one else has, to use as names for people and places and cuss words and anything else that can't be accurately described in "the common tongue".

I am having the damndest time trying to figure out what to post next. It's a Justified meets Howl's Moving Castle fic (very loosely, if you'd like one that's more integrated, read the remix of it by @ WillowMcKinley. it's very good!)

Heya!

I'm Jade and while I'm not new to Tumbling, it has been a long ass time since the last time I posted. Seriously, I've gotten married, become a mama, and now my baby is starting preschool!

But that's part of why I'm coming back. With my toddler out of the house for most of the day, keeping the house running is 500x easier! This means that I have time to work on some of the obsessions hobbies that I set aside when my kiddo was born.

...Like reading and writing spicy stories! (Even though I never really stopped reading them ...)

But also learning more about paranormal creatures (and folk tales, in general) and how to tell a badass story. You know, the kind of perfectly normal obsessions hobbies anyone could have.

I've even decided that I'll finally self publish an original story of my own! (Yay!)

But that well of creativity I used to have... It kind of isn't there any more. (Aw, fuckle sauce)

I used to read all the time (mostly fanfiction, but it still counts). I played tabletop RPGs with my friends several days a week and even when I wasn't writing (mostly fanfiction, but it still counts), I was still coming up with new scenes and story ideas nearly every time I heard a new song. (or an old song that held meaning for me) ... (or any song, really, as long as I was in that super creative state where I was physically exhausted from work, but mentally traveling at super speeds because Monster Rehab is unholy but delicious)

But little ones need so much attention - soooooo much attention. And while I don't regret a single moment, I didn't realize that when I made my kiddo the center of my mental universe, that my storytelling skills would atrophy.

So, I sat myself down and thought back to what really got me passionate about writing in the first place.

I mean, I've been telling myself stories for as long as I can remember. I'm pretty sure I still have the first story I ever wrote (I was 9 and it was a Peter Pan self insert). But it wasn't until I found this place, Tumblr, that I really felt excited enough about a story to share it with others.

I learned so much here. I learned about fandoms and synesthesia and respectful representation and toxicity and memes and that other people could love and care about a fictional person just as much as I did.

It was an incredible time in my life.

And it would be even more incredible if I could have a piece of that again. Yes, Tumblr has changed, but so have I. Everything changes - the world has moved on (if you know what that's from, please know that I love you) and no one can ever go home, and so on.

But Second Chance Romance is a whole sub genre of its own, so maybe Tumblr and I still have a chance?

It's worth trying for, I think.

This was more wordy than I meant it to be, but that's me, so I'm leaving it this way (I love words, really and truly). If you made it this far, I would love to connect with you! I'm here to read and write stories, but mostly paranormal romance. I'm happy to talk about your book (if you write), or that book you just finished (if you read), or about the writing process in general! I'll be reposting (is that the word? I can't remember and it's bothering me) stuff that speak to me, as well as thoughts, ideas, and experiences of my own, but I'm thinking of starting a serial story, too? (I miss writing, really and truly)

What do you think? Would you be willing to read a serial story or is that more of a fanfiction thing?

Self Care Wednesday

Sometimes, self care is talking until you are heard.

Not all the time. But sometimes.

This is important, so let me repeat it.

Sometimes, self care is taking until you are heard.

This can include, but it's not limited to:

having an uncomfortable conversation because being quiet and hoping it will go away isn't working

realizing mid sentence that you had the wrong idea the whole time, but also that the act of saying all your thoughts out loud is what let you see that

Saying the same damn thing 50 different ways because the previous 49 didn't communicate the idea the right way

Acknowledging that you may not feel the same about The Thing tomorrow when you've had a sleep and a food and a shower, but desperately needing to address how you feel at this moment

Knowing that saying the thing out loud won't change anything but needing the release of having said it out loud at least once

Just remember and respect the rules:

Never tell another person how they feel

Don't bring unrelated faults into the argument

Don't switch topics because you feel like you're "losing"

Listen when it's your turn

We are all human (no one is perfect or psychic)

Everyone is responsible for their own words and actions (yes, even if they were drunk or upset at the time)

Don't say it if you don't mean it

Words are hard, ok? I understand this so so well. There is so much, so terribly much you can tell about a person from their word choice and tone and body language and volume. I love language and communication and sharing ideas and culture and learning, but it is so hard to take the ideas that in my head and share them with another person, but it's important to try. Even if the words don't fit right, use them - it's better to use too many imperfect words than to say nothing, to not even try.

Because words are power and magic and they can heal, they can at least start the healing process, if you let them.

Please let them. Please try.

And now that I've used up my words for the moment, I'll go ahead and stop here.

Updates Tuesday (fics)

Heya, again!

Good news? My creativity is coming back!

Bad news? Some of my creative bad habits came back with them (story frogging - I'm incapable of focusing on only one story until it's completion for I am a story frog and must hop about from wip to wip at my whim)

So ... Let's break this down by story:

Supernatural Romance

I can't recall if I shared this last week (and I am too lazy to search for the post at the moment), but I have what I call my pre outline finished. I know what the Antagonist does in each of the 5 books of the series and I know what the generalized (as in 1 or 2 sentences) plot of each of the five books is. I'm still figuring out who is in each book and this is going slow?

Ok, remember back when I said I love fan fiction? My character creation process relies in part on other people's characters that I adore. (Not the actors that played them, when applicable, but the characters. Seriously, most of the time, the actors aren't even real to me.) I'll pick a "soul claim" and then think, ok, what would that character change if they had this backstory instead? Or this fear? Or this opportunity? I have to do this bc otherwise all my characters are vague copies of myself and each other. I only use characters I feel I know really well, but I don't always use their canon versions.

So, the first book in my series is called"Desert Wolf" for now and I know who the FMC is for this one (Hermione from Harry Potter), but I haven't fully figured out who the MMC is? (Maybe Ranger from the Stephanie Plum books?). The third one is lovingly called "Murder Bot Trash Panda" and will feature a version of Bucky Barnes as the MMC, but I'm still figuring out who the FMC will be. I'm not really sure who anyone else is yet... Also, the outlines are not really fleshed out besides this. And also-also, I had to set the novella aside for now bc my original idea doesn't fit there anymore. So, .... Yeah, I find myself avoiding these stories a lot because they feel like trying to find your way through a new friend's house in the dark. Like you know you're welcome there, but you still feel like a guest and you don't know where anything is.

Sanguine

I've only posted the first post/chapter of this on my side blog last week, and I'm planning to write alternating POVs, for the moment. Honestly, the story began as self indulgent, self insert Pitch Black fanfic, but I feel like it's firmly in my Supernatural Romance universe now. It's still for fun and self indulgence, though, so I'm not too worried with where it will fit with the other stories.

Anyone interested in this one should be aware that it will be based on a few of my fantasies, it will be spicy, and it will not depict healthy relationships or decisions. (nothing i would consider abuse, but some situations definitely in what I consider the "grey area") I'll be sure to tag as I post.

Scrawling Your Name On My Skin

This is another fic that won't feature the healthiest of relationships, but the characters will work on that as the story goes. This is a Hobbit AU fanfic that starts as a one sided Nori/Dwalin fic but will probably end up as an ot3 Dis/Nori/Dwalin. I'm not planning on anything too spicy, or at least not for a long while.

In the first fic, You're The One, Nori is the equivalent of 15 years old or so, and Dwalin is somewhere around 20 years old. There will be strong YA vibes, especially at first, and it will feature well intentioned obsession that gets called out as BS when those older and wiser realize what's happening.

Supers

This is a brand new one, as in still just vibes that I've found over the past week or so. I have some prompts that mesh well together, but i also have an older "mostly vibes" story that I could integrate with the prompts? Maybe?

The short version is that this universe has soul matches, which is someone who will majorly affect your life. Most people have only one, some will have multiple. A soul match might end up being romantic and/or sexual, but it certainly doesn't have to be. There's plenty of soul matches who can't stand each other - but each is the person who will affect the course of the life of the other one the most. Sometimes soul matches aren't reciprocated, too.

Anyways, this world also has some folks who have super powers, because why not?

The story is something along the lines of a young aspiring hero comes to the Big City to find a job and join the Hero's League, but ends up being the soul match of the most powerful (but not necessarily most well known) villain of the city. Hijinks ensue.

I have absolutely nothing written on this yet, but it's fun to play with the ideas.

Old Hobbit Retelling & Old Pitch Black Cross over

That's not what they're called, but that's what I'm calling them here, for now. These are two old fanfics, each of them sizable. I wrote them under a different handle, one of them was only posted in AO3, but the other was posted on here and AO3.

I've been feeling the urge to write on these, too, but... I'm not sure I could simply pick up where I left off? Like, I feel like I'd need to go back and potentialy rewrite the stories, which wouldn't be bad, but the Hobbit Retelling I'm thinking of changing up so I can treat it like original fic (which, there's enough that's different that once I change the names of people and places it won't be a problem), but it's HUGE and ... I don't know if I should?

They're both familiar and comfortable, but I don't know if I should go back to them.

I might just have to hold that thought in my head for a while until I figure out what to do with it.

And... Yeah, that about sums it up. Lots of ideas, not much progress this week. But now you know who all has been living rent free in my head, right?

Another progress report next week, hopefully with more progress!

Heya! I did a thing!!!

So, yesterday I posted a thing on my writing side blog, @GlasScribbles!!

It's called Sanguine, because I'm a language nerd, and it started off as a self indulgent fanfic years ago, but now it's somehow part of my paranormal romance universe? I'm not sure how, yet, though.

Warning: I have not plotted this one out. I'm literally using it to get back into the habit of writing more often, so there may be small inconsistencies as the story progresses and I'll be swapping POVs between the male and female characters. There will be instant lust, smut/spice (but i can't promise it will be well written), and there's potential for violence later, but I don't have any concrete ideas for that yet.

First, thank you for sending my first ask!!!

And second, thank you for being so incredibly patient about an answer!!!

I guess that I'd like to talk about the fact that I'm scared I'm that I'm chasing a high I'll never be able to reach again.

My first go-round with Tumblr was magical - I was part of several very active fandoms, never ran into too many hateful people, and not only met some fantastic writers, but made a friend who I still love and adore, even though we haven't spoken for years.

In that era of my life, my writing was inconsistent and jumped all over the place and my posting stories was slow, but the excitement and inspiration seemed to be never ending! It was like being secretly drunk all the time, but on fanfiction and fandoms, instead of alcohol.

This time, I'm not starting as a part of any particular fandom (as in fandom of already created works), and I'm focusing on my own original works and...

I guess I'm not worried about my writing style, because I've already had confirmation that I tell stories well, but I'm worried about whether my original ideas will be worthy of their own fandoms some day?

I think I can honestly say, that while yes, I want to write stories that will make me money, what I really want is a group of people that will love my OCs and stories just as much as I do. I want to have folks I can get giddy with and see fanart of the things that were in my head.

That's what true success would be, that's the high I'm chasing. I just don't know if I can pull it off, you know?

Soooo, yes. I'm back. Again.

So, my gremlin my toddler brought home strep and the flu from the preschool.

At the same time.

And then proceeded to share them with me.

I am so thrilled about this, let me tell you. (This is sarcasm)

On an unrelated note, if anyone is writing about sick toddlers and/or convincing sick toddlers to take medication they don't like, please let me know and I'll be happy to share my real world experiences with you. (For example, nothing hides the taste of Tamiflu and my gremlin will happily throw hands to avoid taking it)

Since I'm feeling more coherent and we'll enough to drink caffeine again, I'm going to stay posting again, instead of sporatically lurking.

Also, it doesn't fit the genre I'm currently trying to write my original WIP in, but I was reminded of an old fan fic I had started writing/thinking of when I was single and then hid away and forgot about. The urge to work on it is strong, and I think it would be a great way to get my creativity flowing again, so I'm starting a side blog to post it on, but I'll post on here when I updated in case anyone is interested in checking out my writing voice/style (or enjoys a nori/dwalin/dis ya hurt/comfort slow burn).

Important to note (and I can't remember if I shared this already or not): I abuse the "save draft" button like we're in a healthy BDSM relationship and it hasn't said the safe word yet, so I might reblog/react to stuff that hasn't been relevant for a month or twenty.

Self Care!

First (of utmost importance), the things I put in these particular posts work for me, or I have close friends who they work for. They are suggestions only and I know they won't work for everyone. My hope is to:

Open a conversation where everyone is welcome to share what brings them piece and calm in our crazy world

Possibly give you new ideas to try

Possibly reassure you that you're not the only one who feels better doing that weird thing

Ok, disclaimer reassurance aside, today I've really needed self care.

With my toddler in preschool, he's been bringing home every cough and cold under the sun. Usually I don't catch them, but this time I wasn't as lucky. I've actually been feeling "not great" for a few days now, but today's been the worst so far.

My protocol:

Rest as much as possible (especially sleep)

Drink more water (so much water, but also tea)

Anything non-vital can be done when I feel better (or by someone else)

Extra shower/bath time (but don't fall asleep in there)

Chicken bone broth (or anything with star anise)

My biggest challenge when I'm sick is getting enough rest and hydration.

Normally I love drinking water, but when I'm sick it doesn't taste good. Solution? First, while I'm sick, herbal tea with (at most) 1 spoon of honey counts as a cup of water. Second, I use those powdered hydration flavored things. They take up less room than keeping Gatorades on hand.

Rest... That's always trickier, whether we're taking about back when I worked two full time jobs at once or after I became a stay at home mama for my little on. Again, my rule is that anything that isn't urgent can wait. This one is hard for me when I'm feeling especially "people pleasing" or if I'm not the only one in the house that's sick, but it's important for me to stick to. I also sit as much as I can and doze as much as my toddler let's me.

To be honest, I used to drink energy drinks after taking NyQuil daytime so that I could get through my shifts, but please know that this isn't good for your body and you run the risk of developing health problems later if you do it too often.

Do you have any tips or tricks for how to get better faster when you're feeling "not great"? Or what you do to power through if you can't afford to give yourself the rest you need? Let me know in the comments or a reblog!

Prinz Charming

1. “I’m so stupid.”

Her feet are bare, one slipper clutched in her palms and the other carelessly tossed to the side, gold paint flaking off onto the stairs. I drop to sit by her. “You are not stupid. Whoever has made you feel that you are?”

Loose hair falls into her face as she shakes her head. “You did.”

2. He will be angry. Or he will be sad. He will pout or fight or demand I marry him there and now or lose what little I have left. He will become my worst nightmare. Tonight, everything changes. I die or I live or I live to die or die to live or simply cease to exist. But everything does have to change. It does. Everything changes. And I’m ready.

4. All I know is his rough hands force me on the ground and push my dress up past my knees and suddenly all I can smell is the putrid apple lingering on his breath as he pants above me. Their cores rotten and skin a glistening red and stems blacker than the blackest night and I think maybe I am the apple.

Maybe I am the apple.

Maybe my porcelain skin is only hiding a rotten core.

Maybe that’s why he likes the taste.

5. Every touch is scorching and terrible but I sink deeper and deeper into his grasp, because at least the heat is better than the cold that’s seemed to make a permanent home out of my bones.

6. The tips of my fingers burn, boiling the water around them, but if Erhart can see it, he makes no move to get away. Not that he would. I could set myself afire and he would still scoop me up into his arms and force himself on the flame.

From my romance novel, Four Kinds Of Falling. Putting under the cut for length and briefest mention of dubcon:

The lights start to dim, the ads shifting into previews for movies to come or, if they’re like most theaters, movies that are already playing but haven’t been replaced yet. In the dark, his arm against mine feels all the more prevalent.

And then his breath’s running across my ear. “You’re gonna think I’m insane.”

I also think I’m gonna cry.

I do remember the last time I came to the movies.

It was sophomore year of high school and my boyfriend tried to undo my pants in the crowded theatre and I stood up so fast my box of Nerds went everywhere-- too loud too loud-- and the girls in the row in front of us shrieked and then we were escorted from the room and when I climbed into Carlos’ car out in the parking lot, I could hardly make myself even buckle up. It all seemed so surreal. Like a dream.

But now Alex’s voice is in my ear and all I can see is that girl talking to her friend in the front row about nothing good.

I didn’t even know what candy he liked.

“Can I pretty please…” I hold my breath, dreading what his next words are going to be, what my next words are going to be. “Pour of one these boxes of M&Ms into the popcorn?”
