You know, ever since I've read De-Lovely, I can't help but think that it is Alastor's and Lucifer's song. I even have this headcanon, like, at the end of your series, after all the issues have been solved and Alastor and Lucifer finally got together, one evening Lucifer stays up late talking with Charlie in the hotel lounge about anything and everything, and when they decide to wrap things up and go to sleep, Lucifer starts to his room but suddenly hears faint music coming from the kitchen. He follows the music, now he doesn't even have to wonder what it means, and of course finds Alastor there, cooking, exactly like that night many months before. They share a look, not speaking, and Lucifer silently goes and sits down, watching Alastor work through the recipe. The radio plays soft jazzy tunes and suddenly the first cords of De-Lovely starts to play. "Oh, that's the song" Lucifer pipes up without thinking, "Hmm? What song?" asks Alastor, "The one you were listening to when I first found you here cooking" Lucifer explains and sighs nostalgically. And to his surprise, Alastor pauses, puts the oven on low heat, takes off the apron, then extends his hand to Lucifer and asks "Would you honor me with this dance?" And after like a moment of surprise he takes Alastor's hand and next thing he knows they are dancing, laughing, twirling to the tunes of the song, it's so lovely, and it becomes their song. Plus point if Charlie comes down to the kitchen for some milk or something and secretly spies them having the time of their lives, and her heart swells with so much happiness because her dad(s) is(are) happy and everything will be alright. Sorry for the long ask, I just love your series very much and can't help but imagine scenes for it. Looking forward to the next installment!

1. The entirety of Monaco 2010

Any Monaco celebration has a special place in my heart as you probably well know! But just Monaco 2010 as an entirety is insane to me, to name a few: the matching Porsches...their parc ferme hug...Seb trying and failing to pull Mark into the pool...them jumping into the harbor together and Seb having to pull Mark up onto the dock, MONACO REALLY GAVE US SO MUCH 🤧 but also this race being the calm before the storm, like seeing them be all cute with each other but then knowing how the season ends and how things continue to proceed after that

2. Their Singapore 2008 date

Always holds a special place on my heart. Just that we have so many pictures and even footage(!!!) of their PR mandated date in a time where this kind of thing wasn't really common yet. The caption of the YouTube vid "Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel share an evening in Singapore" 😵‍💫 and I also think often about this comment on that vid calling Seb a "kleine Mädchen." I just think it's very cute. Giggly STR Seb and older gruff RBR Mark, not yet affected by teammate tensions

3. Japan 2007

I think its always very interesting the foreshadowing you can read into while watching older races. I love that Martian were always on an inevitable collision course. Like imagine being Mark and that rookie who crashed into the back of you then goes to win a race before you and then becomes your teammate and then becomes wdc. That they were on this collision course before they even became teammates and Seb had barely been in the sport yet. And LIKE that quote from Mark about Seb about "kids with no experience" and Seb crying in his garage, crazy.

4. Turkey 2010

I have such a fondness for "WHAT THE FUCK ARE WE DOING HERE!? WHAT A STUPID ACTION! I'M GOING HOME! FUCK YOU!"(to the point where my friends who know nothing about f1 know about that quote by proxy bcs I quote it so much") I think it's interesting how much Martian's conflicts revolve around team orders and disobeying radios. It's funny bcs in Turkey 2009, a very similar situation to both Turkey 2010 and Malaysia 2013 happens, them telling Seb to stay behind Mark bcs of whatever reasons. And in 2009, Seb is clearly 🫤 about it but obeys but then goes on to try to overtake Mark in 2010 and fails, but then succeeds in 2013, very interesting to see how that dynamic evolves and grows more toxic! But by far the best part about Turkey 2010 is them having to take that "Us in our Get-Along T-Shirt" pic 😭 it's so funny and I wish they'd do press releases like this nowadays

5. That Monaco 2021 interview where Mark interjects about knowing the meaning behind the coins in Seb's race boots

It's just very sweet to me. There's some post about it on here that explains how meaningful it is, but I don't feel like searching for it, so I'm kinda just paraphrasing that. But like imagine them having a conversation where Seb explains it to Mark and the meaning behind it, and like probably a decade later, Mark still remembers it in perfect detail, enough to remember about the specificities about which coin goes in which boot and why.

Obligatory mentions: Malaysia 2013 of course(but I wanted to mention others, but Multi-21 is a given when considering crazy Martian moments), Australia 2016 podium, Mark's various Instagram forays during Seb's retirement, that one interview where Mark grabs Seb from behind while Love Will Tear Us Apart plays, when Seb sat on Mark's shoulders, anything of them from Abu Dhabi 2022, etc etc

I know you’ve talked about unrequited PaleWatcher before but I am curious of if you think that the Pale King wouldn’t want to hurt Lurien as a fear of taking advantage of him? Like I know you think that the Pale King tries to abide by social rules, so I’m curious if he’d ever have concerns with over stepping those with his feelings for Lurien. I would assume he’d want Lurien to be happy and safe because he believes that is what the Watcher deserves. After all, who wouldn’t love Lurien?

But I'm glad you gave me this to mull over bc its something I like to chew on as much as the characters themselves. For the more canon take on the pairing (unrequited love), I don't think that PK's concerns about social rules or rank would have any effect on it; it would be a mix of his own issues with emotional processing and his overwhelming dedication to the kingdom that would prevent him from realizing he's interested in Lurien. If he *did* make the connection that his fondness for him was linked to a desire for mateship, then the only thing that would stop him from mentioning it was if he thought Lurien showed no interest, or if he thought another was courting him. Social power dynamics don't have any influence in how he feels.

See, power dynamics work differently for wyrms and Higher Beings than it does for mortals. With mortals, extreme power differences is dangerous, and is an outlier that should be avoided. With Higher Beings-especially wyrms- it's inherent and expected. Everything is about power to them, and about who is more or less powerful than the other, and relationships are built on a mutualistic understanding of those dynamics, with one taking a submissive role that offers vulnerability to the more dominant partner, who accepts it and cares for them in turn. Even when there is no power differential, the dominance/submission dynamic is typically put into play to keep everyone at peace. For example, PK and WL are both roughly the same power level, but PK takes on a willingly submissive role, and WL takes on a dominant one. PK yields his burrow and his people to her, and she in turn protected and nurtured them.

It's more apparent in wyrms because of how they breed. Larger, stronger, older wyrms are preferentially sought out as broodmothers because they can handle the risks of clutching better than smaller, younger, and thinner wyrms. Said weaker wyrms are wired with the instinct to find a strong partner for the advantage to their young, but would be at an inherent disadvantage in courtship. So weaker wyrms typically make up for this by being submissive/fawning to the larger wyrms, who are in turn calmed enough by the reassurance that they do not want to conquer their territory to consider mating (yes this still involves fighting as a method of courtship. It's just more ritualized than outright warfare). That strength would then be used to protect and care for their mates until the end of the breeding season results in them parting ways. Both benefit; the smaller wyrms get to breed and be protected while they tend to their brood, while the larger ones don't have to worry about their partner vying for their territory.

PK is very well aware that Lurien is weaker and more fragile than he is. But he is mentally strong, cunning and clever, and is a favorable mate for it, so he will have him if Lurien so wishes, because in his mind, he would be the safest with him- Lurien is *his*. The fact that there is a social impact of the courtship would not occur to him unless pointed out, and would not affect his choices either way. He knows Lurien can say no to him. He chose him as his favored one specifically because of this. You cannot take advantage of what is already yours, especially if he willingly gives himself to you

(Yes this adds an edge of danger and inequality to the ship. I, however, find this deeply enticing. Love and partnerships are not the same between people and wyrms, which makes for fun variation from the traditional formula. Plus 'I can kill you or bewitch you at a whim but choose not to because I care for you' is deeply fucking sexy don't @ me)

HOWEVER this requires PK to actually think about his feelings. That's impossible step 1. Then he has to actually act on those feelings instead of shoving them away as selfish and unwanted. That's impossible step 2. So no he doesnt care about social advantages/disadvantages or whats proper or not like Lurien does, it's more the struggle of accepting that he likes Lurien and that this is not a bad thing that will impact Lurien's dedication to the kingdom thats the issue

OKAY Full disclosure. this was spurred by some posts ive seen floating around and they are Objectively correct and i agree with them, but the wordage they use is what bothers me and makes me think--its about the general and growing frustration and dismay over LEMH's portrayal and like... increased Importance in LMK, at the expense of like, literally all the other characters new and old.

Again, objectively that is INCREDIBLY true and i feel it 200%!!!! Its frustrating because they just yoinked aspects of SWK's relationships with characters like DBK from the original JTTW and Shoved them on LEMH like theyre Tropes that can be shifted around without consequence--it seems fine and interesting when you first watch LMK with no context or background knowledge, but after knowing what his ACTUAL deal was in the book, looking back on LMK makes what they are doing with LEMH feel lazy and Genuinely poorly researched, rather than an intentional divergence from the original story--because as a general rule of thumb, even if the fans dont Like what you changed, you still want the things in your story to be done On Purpose, like you at least Tried to put effort into it! Its about showing the audience that you think they deserve a narrative that was crafted with Care, not just slapped together and thrown out for a quick Hype/Cash grab, yk???

Anyway So THATS the thing, and thats all cool!!! My issue (and i cannot stress this enough this is Me being Silly and Obsessed with the Six Eared Macaque im a chronic blorbo haver there is no Cure) is that those posts Also tend to talk about LEMH as though... he is a boring character. As though he's just kind of "eh". Or at least thats how my Admittedly biased eyes read them--no beef! Its just gotten me to thinking and now i want to try to write out What im thinking and Why, bc thats a helpful thing to do when you're struggling to figure in your head, obvs obvs

And im of course willing to admit that Yes, in the original text, he is just kind of There! He serves his purpose (aiding in SWK's character development) and then he dies and he doesn't come back again! Hes kind of a metaphor but hes also just an annoying guy! Hes not presented as anything special! I get that that is what is Canon, and thats theres no way to really like... read anything deep into it. Bc theres literally nothing there.

But my problem is that i cannot let characters like that just Be. Especially if the premise of said character could be absolutely FASCINATING if you take it all Completely seriously and At face value--if you try to see whatever is going on for them through their eyes, their minds. Its like.... You can buy a shirt from the store as is, and some might be fine Wearing it as is--while other's might see that shirt and decide it needs a bit of hemming and perhaps some embroidery on the sleeves. Altering it does not change the fact that the original design is what it is--thats just One altered shirt that one person is wearing and perhaps lending to a friend or two, yk???

To me? LEMH exists in a nebulous state of inevitable connection with SWK--because i like to take the "LEMH is SWK's ~dark side~" thing seriously. In my eyes, they are literally the same person, the same qi, split into two bodies.

There are stories that exist today that explore this idea, characters with this kind of relationship--and i find them incredibly compelling! Because i adore stories that play with the question of what makes a person a person. What seperates you from your maker/origins? What is your purpose in life when you are intrinsically connected to another person, at your very core? Does that mean you exist For them? Do they exist for you? How does thinking that way affect a person, mentally and emotionally? How does it affect these characters, specifically, in conjunction with their personalities and the lives theyd led up until the point they knew about this connection? Have they always known about this connection? Only one of them?

How much more drastic would it affect you if you were essentially a nobody--and the person you are connected to is a public figure? Like Sun Wukong?

What i am getting at here.... is that LEMH would likely work Best as a character who's metaphorical aspects are taken Very Literally--especially so if the story also decides to lean into the idea of his hearing reaching through to the past and future, in any way. He is a character that would thrive on being portrayed in a way that allows him to be a bit Meta, if that makes sense

Yes, you Could just let him be a silly monkey who decided to start shit with SWK for giggles one day--that can absolutely have its merits! But that does not satisfy me, and that is why i am so passionate about him. I want to take my little guy so so fucking seriously because i think it would be SO fucking cool. And a very useful and convenient way to explore ideas about relationships with The Self--since in my eyes, that is what his relationship would be with SWK.

#horse.txt #jttw #xiyouji #liu er mihou #six eared macaque #sun wukong #god this is missing so many smaller thoughts and ideas and shit but i have no idea where to squeeze them in. #theirs lots of stuff going on in my head but its a pain to organize #lemh needs to be a tragic angry antagonist who feels slighted by the world for being dealed the unfortunate hand he was dealt. #even if the fact that he doesn't have what he wants is still technically his fault. kind of like a petulant child but more drastic #and of course SWK having to come face to to face with all that and recon with how lemh doesn't just remind him of himself #in a way he literally IS himself--just with some parts switched around or more prominent than others #he could still kill him or not--theres lots of ways to play with that (personally im curious about the angle of it being a metaphor for sh) #(and/or repression of the self in the Bad way--at least for a short time--because that seems realistic in relation to the original meaning #of that chapter) #with sanzang trying to get him to be less violent and cruel to their adversaries because it is detrimental for his spiritual development #the fact that him Killing lemh (a part of himself) is the tipping point for him to be less murder-happy is very interesting to me #and i like to think that while it was good for him in the long run it may have had very negative and Painful immediate consequences as well #because becoming a better person by Any method is never a straightforward one and done path--backsliding and mistakes are inevitable #itd be nice to see more stuff on the side of the fandom ive been in that explores that more #especially since that was like... the whole point of jttw in the first place #so much for not making this post any longer WHOOPS
