Writing Burnout and Helpful Tips

Hi yall, it’s been wonderful seeing ask-the-prose posts going around writeblr and I’m so happy to see that some of these guides are helpful. If you have a specific topic you’d like me to cover, send in an ask!

What is burnout?

Burnout is incredibly common and nothing to be ashamed of! If you find you are too exhausted to do what you love, running out of ideas, or perhaps not wanting to do anything, you may be burned out. Burnout can pose a serious block to your writing, and it’s just not fun.

Burnout can happen when you’re stretching yourself too thin, spending more time and energy creating than taking in creativity, or not taking care of yourself the way you need.

Step 1: Put out the fire

One of the number one ways to fast-track your way to burnout is to forget to care for yourself. We’re writers! Sometimes we get in the zone, or maybe a little obsessed, and we forget to eat, hydrate, and maybe even put off sleep. But ignoring self-care is unsustainable.

We all see posts all over reminding us to hydrate, eat well, sleep, and even stretch, but these are genuinely great tips to remember when you’re not feeling well. I’d like to add a few ideas to try when you’re feeling down.

Exercise. Walk, run, play a sport, do anything that helps move your body, whatever you can do to help your blood flow, even if it’s just a few push-ups or a good stretch.

Find a new set of walls to stare at. I get in a rut going to the same places or staying home when I have nowhere to go. But hanging out at a coffee shop or cafe helps me often. It’s a chance to observe people, see new things, and get some sunlight. If you need to shake it up, try a new cafe!

Socialize. Sometimes burnout looks like loneliness. Socialize! Talk to a friend or family member, or make a new friend! New perspectives help.

Not all of these work for everybody, but they’re friendly suggestions to try when you’re feeling burnout coming on.

Step 2: Replenish your reserves

As creatives, we get stuck always wanting to create, but that’s not sustainable either! Creativity is not just an internal process, we need external stimulation to replenish our creative reserves. When you feel like you just can’t come up with ideas or anything new, maybe it’s time to read.

Reading can help, though I personally understand the struggle to read (and finish!) books. Start with short stories or novellas if you struggle to read novels. Read within the genre you’re trying to write, and then step out of your genre and try something new. You never know when inspiration will strike.

Watch movies, listen to new music, play a video game, or do anything that can give you a creative boost. Reading is critical, but learning about other mediums is just as important.

Step 3: Self-indulgence is key

You may find as you’re recovering from the burnout that your wip may just be what’s causing the problem. Ask yourself some important questions:

Am I writing for myself?

Am I writing something that I want to write?

If not, what do I want to write about?

Do I like what I’m writing, or do I feel like it’s what everyone wants to read?

Answer these questions for yourself, and if you find you don’t like those answers, take a look at your project and see what you can or want to change. Remember, if it’s not fun and it’s not what you want, then it might not be worth it.

Take what you need, leave what you don’t

As always, this guide is meant to be helpful, and as with all writing advice, it’s entirely subjective. I believe these tips work because they worked for me. But if you find that something isn’t helping, leave it! Move on or adjust to what you as an individual need to recover from your burnout.

Remember that no writing is ever wasted and that your writing matters. We need your voice too!

Former member of the British boy band One Direction, Louis Tomlinson will perform, in May, three shows in Brazil. It will be the third time that the musician will perform in the country, an experience that, according to him, is always chaotic - and "in the best possible sense". This is what the singer said to g1, in an interview held at Allianz Parque, where he will play in São Paulo, on May 11.

The shows are from the "Faith in the Future" tour, in which Louis returns to his latest album, released in 2022. The setlist also involves songs from the album "Walls" and, of course, One Direction hits.

Fever among children and adolescents in the 2010s, the pop group was formed from the TV show "The X Factor" and lasted six years, breaking up in 2016. Since then, the musicians have followed a solo career. A fact that, in Louis' eyes, is inevitably competitive.

"Your only reference is to compare yourself with the other members," said the Englishman. "You start to think, 'If they're getting this, why am I not getting it?'"

On Spotify, the number of monthly listeners among artists differs a lot. The most popular star of the divorced boy band, Harry Styles has about 58.2 million. Next are Zayn Malik (27.3 million), Niall Horan (17.3 million), Liam Payne (5.7 million) and Louis (2.9 million).

But if success meters like this were once a burden for the musician, today they are no longer, according to him, who also made a point of reiterating that he has always been proud of his friends.

In the interview, the musician also commented on subjects such as the conspiracy theories that describe him as a partner of Styles, the changes of concept between his albums, a Brazilian remix of his "Kill My Mind" - from the funkeiro FP of Trem Bala -, and his interest in fashion

g1 - What is the main difference between the Louis Tomlinson of the X Factor, 2010 and the Louis Tomlinson of today?

Louis Tomlinson - There is a lot of naivete in the boy who appeared in the X Factor. I really didn't know what I was getting into. I didn't know how that would put me sitting here. I definitely had no idea what I was acquiring.

I think I feel much more fulfilled. More confident. It took me a while to have enough courage to say: 'I'm creative, I'm a singer, I'm a composer

Now, I'm just internalizing all these feelings. When you grow up in a place like Doncaster, where I grew up, it takes a while to believe in all these things. Because you only watched it from afar, on TV or on the radio. So, when you become one of these people, there is a whole process until you believe and understand everything.

g1 - And what is the greatest similarity?

Louis Tomlinson - Probably my appearance (laughs). Well, I hope my fans don't correct me here. I like to think that I've always had a very lovely relationship with them. I think that's the only constant thing.

g1 - Do you know any Brazilian singer or band?

Louis Tomlinson - We were talking today about Anitta. And hm... Fresh? Fre? Fresno? I'm learning. I hope [the confusion with the band's name] didn't sound disrespectful, it wasn't my intention.

Do you have any recommendations for me? I got some tips today. What do you have for me?

g1 - There is a Brazilian musician called FP do Trem Bala. He made a remix of 'Kill My Mind'...

Louis Tomlinson - That's cool! So far, you were the one who made the best recommendation. Definitely.

g1 - This is your third time in Brazil. What comes to your mind when you hear things like 'doing a show in Brazil', 'Brazilian tour', or simply 'Brazilian fans'?

Louis Tomlinson - Chaos. And in the best possible sense. I totally love it.

Live experiences are defined by the most chaotic moments. And coming here and always feeling this energy is as if from the first drum beat, the fans were already there. It's a really triumphant feeling.

g1 - In musical terms, how was the experience of creating 'Faith in the Future' compared to 'Walls'?

Louis Tomlinson - I felt much more fulfilled, confident. I had more understanding of what I wanted to do and how to do it.

[On the first album], there was the factor that I left One Direction. It was as if my head was a mess and there was so much to think about... It didn't have a clear direction. I had to go through the experimentation phase to, in fact, understand who I am as an artist. That took time.

Throughout my creation of 'Walls', this was happening, but I was in a clearer, more concise place going to 'Faith in the Future'. And I think that made [the second] album better.

g1 - Recently, you created 28 Clothing, a fashion brand. What is your relationship with this sector?

Louis Tomlinson - I've always had a very funny relationship with fashion. Without a doubt, I'm interested in clothes, I've always been. Since I was young. But there is a level of haute couture that goes far beyond my understanding.

You know, I like to dress well. The brand is something I've always wanted to do. It is also intertwined with one of my [greatest] passions, football.

Football and fashion have been connected since the game was a game. People's fashion in the stands and everything else...

I think it's a very interesting thing and, for sure, a culture in which I was already inserted when I was younger. So, the brand helps me tell my story.

g1 - You once mentioned that you felt a little uncomfortable and more competitive at the beginning of your solo career. You said you were a little upset because you kept comparing your level of success with that of the other members of One Direction. Do you still feel that way?

Louis Tomlinson - No, I don't feel like it. Really. But I think that anyone - and obviously, there won't be many people who can identify with it - but anyone who has gone through a similar situation...

Being in a band and leaving on your own will always make your only reference be to compare yourself with other members. That's literally all you have.

I think it's a matter of maturity, actually. It took me a long time to look at it for what it was. Because that's where petulance begins. You start to think: 'If they're getting this, why can't I do it?'. And that becomes a little toxic.

Unfortunately, this is the nature of the music industry. It is naturally competitive. We are all competing for spots.

But now I see it in a very different way. And as I said, this requires maturity. I also needed to succeed on my own to be able to get through this. To overcome this.

Now, this comes back as I feel a confidence in saying these things.

Oh, and just to reiterate, because it's important: while I felt competitive, or more competitive than I am today, it wasn't like I wasn't immensely proud of everything the boys were doing.

It was more about reflecting on my own situation. Just about thinking: 'Oh, I wish I had a little of that'.

Now, I feel in a very, very, different place. And it's a nicer thing to feel, because being very competitive isn’t always the nicest feeling.

g1 - I imagine you hear questions like this all the time, right? Does it bother you?

Louis Tomlinson - Yes, it's okay. As I mentioned before, I understand the obvious public interest in One Direction. That's obvious. And you know, I appreciate that these things are interesting. I suppose [that they are].

g1 - Louis, many fans believe in the conspiracy theory that you’re dating Harry Styles, even though you describe this story as ridiculous. Why is this conspiracy so famous?

Louis Tomlinson - What I realized a few years ago is that there is nothing I can say, there is nothing I can do to stop those who believe in this conspiracy. They are so connected with what they believe they will not see the truth for what it actually is. I'm sure many people look and find all these little conspiracies that happen in life interesting.

I would be lying if I said it doesn't annoy me a little, but it's the nature of the work.

There are times when it gets very personal. I have my son, Freddie. He's the most important person in my life. And occasionally, [these theories] end up addressing things that are kind of unfair.

That's what we have now. There's nothing I can do about it. Nothing I can say to stop people from inventing what they want to invent. So, so be it.

g1 - Finally, what is your favorite song at the moment and why?

Louis Tomlinson - My favorite album is Paolo Nutini's last. It's great, amazing. He's an amazing singer, maybe he's my favorite singer. It's indeed an inspiring album.

And favorite music... I can't remember the name, but it's from The Libertines, a band I've liked since I was young.

Do you have any tips for people who want to get into writing? Your book is really good and I was just wondering what your process was/how you learned to write the way you did, etc.

Aw, thank you for getting my book!!

Here are my tips:

- read a lot of books. watch a lot of movies. watch a lot of shows. play video games. be inspired and analyze the things you like in other media vs the things you do not like. it's good to be critical of stories because it'll help you understand what makes them work better.

- try to write frequently. like any hobby, it takes time and practice to get better. everyone starts somewhere.

- some people write outlines and follow that path to a letter. Some people, ie, me, just write whatever they feel like writing that day. But in either case, just have fun with it. Choose a process you enjoy and go wild.

- In regards to my own process and how I learned to write...really, I was just a big reader as a kid and teenager. I just loved reading stories, of any kind. Sci Fi, fantasy, horror, the odd romance. I started getting my own ideas and I just ran full steam ahead into my own nonsensical worlds and silly characters. That's really all it takes.

Having a story in your heart and letting it out.

Insofar as the mechanics of writing, well...like I said.

Practice.

I've been writing every day since I was 17.

I feel like I learn something new every day. Refine something else.

I have a particular style that I'm cultivating and I know some people don't like it, but that's ok.

At the end of the day, you write the way you want to.

No one else can write the way you do, so embrace it and learn through trial and error.

It's also good to share your work with others, which I know can be hard, but it's an essential step in the process.

Other people can notice things you don't and help you improve!

The Sandbox Method

Something that I find really inspiring for self-learning is the Sandbox method (from this article). It essentially breaks down a flexible process for teaching yourself new skills, such as programming or music. I wanted to post this now that people might have some free time in between semesters or winter vacations. I'll put a small breakdown under the cut in case you don't want to jump to a new webpage, but I highly recommend reading through the article and seeing how it might apply to your own goals and projects.

The process of "Guess and Check":

You encounter a problem

You find a potential solution

You ask, "Did this solution work?"

If yes, you solved the problem

If no, you search for a new potential solution

Building your sandbox

You need to create some sort of environment to use as your sandbox, so that you have a space to practice the knowledge you are learning.

The characteristics of a good sandbox: - Lost cost/free: remove cost as a barrier to starting - Low-stakes: to avoid the barrier of psyching yourself out - Public: have some sort of record of your progress. Perhaps someone else will appreciate your process. This is also useful as a feedback loop

Examples

Programming: a coding environment

Writing: pen and paper, a word processor

Photography: a camera

Design: an art program and a place to post your work

For all of the examples above, you want to find somewhere to post your work.

Research

Collect knowledge and tips and put them into practice. Once you find something that you can apply, practice it within your sandbox.

It's important to take notes of the ideas you're collecting. Write down what works and what doesn't. Write what steps you are using and any thoughts you have as you're practicing. This is a step that takes place iteratively. You will learn some things, practice, and go back and learn next steps.

Avoid passive practicing. In the studyblr community, the most common advice is to not just reread your books or notes, since this is simply passive learning. This also applies to self-teaching.

Some other examples of passive learning: - Only reading books or watching videos and never doing something yourself. - Playing songs you already know how to play - Programming things that you've already done.

Try active practicing

Know your limits and where you need to improve

Set a goal beyond your current abilities to stretch yourself

Get feedback

Get Feedback

You will obviously not know everything when you are starting out, and this includes mistakes that can become habits. If you find a feedback loop, you can learn how to mitigate these mistakes early and implement better practices early on.

Other tips

Sometimes you will need to take a leap of faith in your abilities. Even if you fail, it's a part of learning and making progress. As long as you learn something from failing, it's still progress.

I FEEL FOR YOU ALL...Q-Q Honestly I didn't even break my high score until near the end; it absolutely isn't easy and some persistence is key

Here's some specific tips on how to get closer to achieving Top 5%: (Just for anyone reading this who needs the tips!)

Watch the previous top 5% scores carefully! The score is climbing, so knowing what to shoot for helps! Last time was 150 eggs, and this time is 156, so fully expect 160 or more to be the bare minimum for next Big Run! That's an average of 55+ eggs a wave, which is very tough, but doable.

Mind your weapon RNG! Sometimes we'll just get unlucky! Pay attention to the entire weapon comp of your team! If you have a high inking weapon and your teammates don't, you may need to focus more on clearing out the chum/smallfry to help your team! YOU may not be able to get a ton of eggs, but if you help them live and move, they may be able to!

Lure + Let eggs gather by the basket before collecting! People get very antsy to go grab a ton of distant eggs first (and dying a lot in the process), but sometimes you do have to let eggs sit in a bunch while you finish off crucial bosses! (Flyfish, Stingers, Big Shots, Eels). If you watch Overfishing videos, you'll often see teams let like 20+ eggs sit around the basket for a bit as they clear the immediate area, THEN spend time mass-dunking a ton of them when they get a moment to breathe! Also make use of the egg throw for distant eggs to get them closer!

For best chances, squad with allies! There's no escaping this: Squads will have better chances to get the high score than 100% solo queue. It's not impossible! I have gotten good scores with randoms, but you're playing a game of chance with the overall skill of your team. There are servers and pools of people who are always looking for good help! If you believe you're EVP material being stuck with bad randoms, go find 'em!

Climbing the ranks is MANDATORY. Top 5% doesn't happen in Overachiever ranks, unfortunately. 8( You need to be up in EVP to get the higher boss spawns, higher egg requirements, etc. My average has been EVP 400 or so before I start hitting the large numbers, so if you're having trouble getting up there, make that your goal! Practice in Salmon Run until EVP 200-300 is doable for you! There are tons of guides out there on optimizing eggs and surviving tough rounds!

Also this isn't many people (and not directed at you guys at all, just generally) but please do not get mad at or blame the overfishers! It's "Top 5%" for a reason, which means just by nature, 95% of players participating WONT get the gold trophies! It's a small pool of people competing to get there.

Ya gotta compete! You gotta give it your all, and work on learning and improving! That's the nature of a competitive result!

You can do it!! If Top 5% is something you truly want to work towards, I believe you can get it! 💪💪💪

truth b told if i started simblr like. today and knew nothing about photoshop then i'd probably be pretty demoralised too but also thats exactly how it was starting simblr anyway i just worked on it until i was happy w my skills... no one gave me a cheat code i just put time and effort into it

i agree with u im ngl like i do sincerely wish everyone had the opportunity to put hours and hours of their lives into learning how everything about this works if thats what they truly wanted. also if anything doing it solely by urself will make the process all the more time consuming but if u ask around for help people (including me! im down to help fr) will usually give it to u and that'll speed up the process more. being mad at me for having that is pointless what am i gna do go back in time and unlearn it all and for what? dsfghjk

okay i did see this being said a lot and uhhhh i was trying to understand it but like. i also don't. like ok with cluttered aesthetic build shots or yknow the odd landscape with heavy bloom shader on it i guess if ur looking at it completely from that pov yeah i guess it looks like some posts that "blow up" r just sort of the same shit. but the fact remains that its also it's good shit like anyone can clutter a room and take a photo of it what really counts here in my opinion anyhow is shot composition. and there's literally preestablished rules for this sort of thing u can google cinematography basics and get it for free... there's a whole field of study looking into what draws the human eye. like maybe the core concepts behind what makes a popular post popular is the same but thats because it just works. if u wanna shy away from that entirely but then complain about ur posts not being as popular then that's very much a u problem it doesn't have anything to do with the rest of us

u can call this an empathy problem and try explain it to me more but i dont see how other people feeling insecure about what their current ability scales up to is any fault of mine or my problem to bend backwards to try fix... or even how i could. like is the standard high now yeah honestly it is. the learning curve was steep as hell when i first started as well. no disagreements here. but what am i supposed to do about it LMAO like i didn't create the human proclivity to be drawn to beauty i just ride off of it.

idk why i'm the bad guy for being honest for my reasoning behind what i do and don't reblog? lots of other people have been saying they dont really care about aesthetics which is great but if i said that i'd literally just be lying to you. i'm not gonna apologise for not lying... i like being able to see the passion and energy poured into the same video game we're all playing it's only natural to appreciate that- if that reads as passive aggression and u don't understand my stance that's fine by me

i would say for me personally try watch visual media that u can recognise as "beautiful" and not to shit on like. cw shows but i mean stuff that is marked by its cinematography being truly excellent. and just really examine how those set and lighting designers use angles and lighting and how the people filming and editing choose to frame their shots to achieve what works. hell looking at art helps with this too. look at other people's stuff on simblr analytically try to seriously work out why it appeals to people the way it does. ik u asked for editing tips but i think it really starts ingame you can have the most incredible editing style but it doesn't work if ur shot comp doesn't work then it'll won't hit as hard

take time to learn what most of the adjustment layers do on photoshop, and what all the blending layers look like, download other people's psds and play with them on top of ur shots to see what works! what u personally think looks good will be different from what i personally think looks good, i like dramatic lighting and muted colours and mid level contrast so not too strong but i can't speak for whether you will too. ALSO im a religious user of @/simmerstesia's psd set here i think a well chosen shot can be really elevated by using something like this to really give it that final polish

additionally if u have any like really specific questions or need some advice u can ask me on discord my dms are open like i can talk u thru it. promise it's not as daunting as it can look

Another question i have: do you have tips for learning Korean vocabulary? Especially for people that somehow find it hard to remember vocabulary?

Hiya hiya ! Yes i actually do! I have PLENTY of advice because Korean vocabulary is difficult for me, too.

The first thing I recommend is following THIS video to cram vocabulary in. I'd say try to do this method once or twice a week if you like learning quickly.

One of the most important parts of doing pretty much anything in life for me is that I need to see IMMEDIATE pay off, reward, or progress. Otherwise, I lose all interest and become forgetful and just kind of.. stop. The method I showed you above is wonderful for that. You're going to see QUICK pay off! (Make sure you follow the next step using that vocabulary, too)

Next you need to seal all of the vocabulary in your mind for long term use, not short term. You can remember a lot of things short term but over time this will fade and you'll forget.

Step 1: Flashcards

You can do this manually with writing out flashcards (which is very helpful, actually) but I also highly recommend having some sort of digital component to help speed the process of things up.

The number one recommendation here is anki. Anki, is by all means a learning god. It uses a system of filing that sorts the flashcards by how quickly you recognize them and how accurate you do so. You just press a number to decide how well you remember the word/phrase/sentence.

I used to enjoy quizlet but they're idiots and decided to make people PAY for their own flashcards. Use something like knowt instead if you'd like!

Step 2: Phrases, Reading, Listening

Very important! The more phrases and sentences you learn in Korean, the easier it will be to figure out grammar and vocabulary. So instead of just learning the verb "to want", try learning sentences using that verb.

Oh! I also saw your other ask (which i'll be responding to next!). Since you enjoy BTS, do yourself a favor! Watch their vlive's with english subtitles, then korean. When you watch the korean subtitles, a really really good exercise is to write down the korean and use naver to find the vocabulary & grammar! Then you can play it back and use the audio as reference for pronunciation/listening practice!

Read Korean lots and lots! It helps so much. Start with things like children's books or shows with subtitles and slowly read it, sound it out in your head and outloud. Eventually you'll get faster at recognizing it.

And that's all! You just need to keep going with your vocabulary as much as possible and USE it! Look around your room and name every single object in Korean. Then say something in a sentence about each object (e.g. 'my desk is brown but my bed is black'). Things like that help a lot

I had an idea for my story about the tall and small in my banner (Alec and Piper) that could make a fun AU.

Piper is an ex-mercenary. She has combat training and years of military experience under her belt, so it's safe to say that she knows how to fight people face-to-face. That's one of the reasons why she gets so stressed out when she becomes small, because the scale is so unequivocally tipped out of balance that she no longer has a snowball's chance in hell at winning in a fight with anyone.

So, what if she invented her own means of 'fighting' ginormous humans? What if, to keep herself busy and as an easy means of accessing the information in the future, she started keeping video logs of her notes and demonstrations as she makes this new form of self-defense? What if she based it off of the defense mechanisms of bugs?

I am absolutely going to incorporate 'Bug Fighting' into her story somehow (perhaps even coming up with a wackier name for it in the process, like Scrimbug or simply Scuttle), but the AU comes in when this happens:

Let's say Piper posts these videos to YouTube or whatever, figuring that nobody would actually believe that the person before them is truly under 3 inches tall. She'd frame it as parody, crafting everything to make it sound like she's just making this content for other 'borrowers' like herself. The videos become surprisingly popular, and comments begin rolling in.

Many are in praise of how impressive the special effects and set are that really make it look like Piper is small enough to spar with a praying mantis, and urge her to continue what she's doing. Then, there is a small section of the comments that seem to be role-playing as though they are the tiny people that are meant to be receiving the information. Piper figures that it's just people having fun, and doesn't think much of it.

Oh man, same! I started watching ninja turtles when the episodes were still coming out, back in '04 I think. I was 9! I got super into it, I got my best friend into it, we played with ninja turtle toys for so long.

My medical issues weren't so bad back then, but they were still a Whole Thing(tm) and I had the DVDs of the first 12 episodes of season 1 and all of Fast Forward once that came out. I watched both a LOT when I was sick, especially Fast Forward. It has gotten me through ROUGH times.

I'm glad you're rewatching it again! I've rewatched it probably three times in the last six months? I'll probably do it again, too hgdkfjg it's so good

Usagi does show up at April and Casey's wedding in the last episode, so I like to imagine that he and Leo had a time off-camera where they met and sparred a little and talked. I like to fill in the blanks. B)

ThANK YOU FOR THE COMPLIMENT AHH!! I struggle with angles in anatomy as well, foreshortening is rough oof. The way I learned to draw things from certain angles is taking stock photos and tracing over them to see how things were drawn. I especially love AdorkaStock (previously SenshiStock), their stuff is GREAT for practicing poses. Looking up youtube videos on gesture drawing can also help loosen up poses. I also really love the Morpho art books, they're super helpful.

A lot of practicing art is just drawing. Even if you feel like it's not good, you should still draw it! As long as you're having fun and enjoying the process. That's the important part. Draw what you want, if you don't like it then don't post it anywhere! Even if you do like it, you don't have to post it. Sometimes it's nice to just draw something that's all yours.

Don't apologize for rambling, as you can see, I tend to do the same thing, and honestly ain't rambling half the fun of having a conversation?? I love hearing from people!

Youtube is full of amazing tutorials. I am a huge fan of the process of learning

convertitore mp3 So, using the anonymity that comes with being one of few train riders these day, I have dived into a wealth of tutorials as well in various instructional manuals. This website is mostly full of tuts on most various subjects, beginning with drawing a shadowed circle in Adobe Photoshop, and ending with stacking dozens of effects rendering 3d models using reflections and chrome.. Although some of the projects aren't easy to accomplish at home, I can follow their instructions and produce the desired effects. It's all computer-related. I apologize if that is misinterpreted. I am not yet learning how Ikea furniture can be put together or providing more efficient customer service.

But, I did learn how to grout and tile floors and walls twelve years ago. I did it fully with YouTube tutorials and videos and our bathroom has been fantastic, with new flooring and walls, brand new pipes and fixtures, new toilet and new flooring bords, basically new everything.. The bathroom is great, however but I have found that taking a shower has never been more pleasurable. It is the most amazing feeling in all of the world. It is. But, it took me eight years to complete everything. I was the sole person who worked and was able to learn. I had to break approximately two dozen tiles before I realized that the tile required scoring and then an tool should be used to break it up along the score. When it finally worked it allowed me to cut shorter and narrower tiles.

Usually I would simply utilize the Youtube video downloader site to download mp4 files to my laptop, and then set it up in the bathroom and play video as I tried to apply the knowledge I was getting towards the task to be completed. I currently do the exact process with my iPad. I take it on the train with me and watch incredible tutorials. I have learned how to program certain JS tricks I was trying to learn, CSS has become my beloved companion, and I used to be scared of it, for all the worst reasons. I know now how to ninja-kick somebody at the time they least expect. This old guy and his channel has taught me a lot of great ecommerce tips. Can't wait for my time off to play with these tips and tricks at home.

Vimeo and Dailymotion both offer a wide selection of educational videos. Certain of the videos can be converted into mp3, and made into podcasts. I can also download the mp4 files onto my laptop, and keep going, pretending everything is an instruction manual in both the way they instruct and how tech-savvy people do this type of instructions. Make sure to download them from browser downloads folder. The majority of browsers save the file on your desktop or allow you to open it with a shortcut combo. I know I do.

Youtube is filled with great tutorials. I am a big fan of learning.

You might be wondering what has changed in the last year. It's my commute.. It's amazing that the train is empty going to work right now. The train ride of 1 hour was once filled with people. Some required standing up, unable to hold back the tiredness. Nowadays, there are a few people per train car. Everybody is working from home, even if they're not employed. This is a tragic consequence of the epidemic. Some people have lost their jobs. Not everyone is able to work remotely. It became clear for me that I was not able to work from home. My job requires hands on training with equipment that can be accessed remotely and cannot be brought outside to be taken home. You can work at the comfort of your home. And so using the privacy of being among the very few train passengers in the present, I've been absorbed in tutorials and various instructional guides.. There are many tutorials available covering various topics. This includes drawing shadowed circles in Adobe Photoshop, stacking multiple effects, rendering 3D models with chrome reflections, reflections, and much other things. Some of it is unfathomable to be done at home, but I can follow their instructions and reproduce desired effects. It's all computer-related. I apologize if that has been incorrectly interpreted. I'm not yet learning how Ikea furniture is assembled or how to provide better customer service.

I was able to learn how to tile and grout walls and floors 12 years ago. It was a breeze using YouTube videos and tutorials. Around 2 dozen tiles had been broken before I discovered that the tile must be scored. Then, a special breaker with an angular shape should be used to ensure it is broken across the cut. It was a fantastic tool that allowed me to cut both short and narrow pieces of tile. I utilized Youtube to download mp4 files, then I would set them all up in the bathroom. As I tried to apply what I had learned to the project at hand I would play videos. I am now doing the same process with my iPad. I take it on the train with me and watch amazing tutorials. CSS is now my best friend and I am no longer afraid of it. I've learned how to ninja-kick someone while they're not expecting it. This channel has given me many ecommerce tips. I can't wait to get my hands on them all at home. Dailymotion and Vimeo offer a wide range of educational videos. I'm also able to convert these videos to mp3or create podcasts out of the videos if they're not essential. I can also download them as mp4 to my laptop. This lets me keep the tutorial going, as if that they're an instructional video. Be aware that downloaded files are typically saved to the browser's downloads directory. Many browsers save on the desktop as well as open folders with a shortcut combination, but you might need to be a little more patient. Yes, I do.

These are all sort of related to backgrounds/painting so I grouped them together even though they’re pretty much entirely separate questions.... ANYWAYS

a) How is it working as a BG artist? Is it hard? What show are you drawing for?

I think you’re the first person to ever ask me about my job! Being a background artist is great. It’s definitely labor intensive but I think that could describe pretty much any art job (If something were rote or easy to automate, you wouldn’t hire an artist to do it) and I hesitate to say whether its harder or easier than any other role in the animation pipeline. Plus, so much of what truly makes a job difficult varies from one production to the next, schedule, working environment, co-workers etc. But I will say that I think while BGs are generally a lot of work on the upfront, I think they’re subject to less scrutiny/revisions than something like character/props/effects design and you don’t have to pitch them to a room like boards. So I guess it’s good if you don’t like to talk to people? LOL

A lot of my previous projects + the show I’ve worked on the longest aren’t public yet so I can’t talk about em (but I assure you if/when the news does break I won’t shut up about it). But I’m currently working on Archer Season 12 LOL. I’m like 90% sure I’m allowed to say that.

c) What exactly do you like to draw most [in a background]?

@kaitomiury Lots of stuff! I really like to draw clutter! Because it’s a great opportunity for environmental storytelling and also you can be kind of messy with it because the sheer mass will supersede any details LOL.

I like to draw clouds... I like to draw grass but not trees lol,,, I like to draw anything that sells perspective really easily like tiled floors and ceilings, shelves, lamp posts on a street etc.

d) Do you have any tips on how to paint (observational)?

god there’s so much to say. painting is really a whole ass discipline like someone can paint their whole life and still discover new things about it. I guess if you’re really just starting out my best advice is that habit is more important than product. especially with traditional plein air painting, I find that the procedure of going outside and setting up your paints is almost harder than the actual painting. There’s a lot of artists who say “I want to do plein air sometime!!” and then never actually get around to doing it. A lot of people just end up working from google streetview or photos on their computer.

But going outside to paint is a really good challenge because it forces you to make and commit to lighting and composition decisions really quickly. And to work through your mistakes instead of against them via undo button.

My last tip is to check out James Gurney’s youtube channel because hes probably the best and most consistent resource on observational painting out there rn. There’s lots other artists doing the same thing (off the top of my head I know a lot of the Warrior Painters group has people regularly posting plein air stuff and lightbox expo had a Jesse Schmidt lecture abt it last year) but Gurney’s probably the most prolific poster and one of the best at explaining the more technical stuff - his books are great too.

e) Do you have tips for drawing cleanly on heavypaint?

@marigoldfool UMM LOL I LIKE ONLY USE THE FILL TOOL so maybe use the fill tool? Fill and rectangle are good for edge control as opposed to the rest of the heavy paint tools which can get sort of muddles. And also I use a stylus so maybe if you’re using your finger, find a stylus that works with your device instead. That’s all I’ve got, frankly I don’t think my drawings are particularly clean lol.

f) Tips on improving backgrounds/scenes making them more dynamic practicing etc?

Ive given some tips about backgrounds/scenes before so I’m not gonna re-tread those but here’s another thing that might be helpful...

I think a good way to approach backgrounds is to think of the specific story or even mood you want to convey with the background first. Thinking “I just need to put something behind this character” is going to lead you to drawing like... a green screen tourist photo backdrop. But if you think “I need this bg to make the characters feel small” or “I need this bg to make the world feel colorful” then it gives you requirements and cues to work off of.

If I know a character needs to feel overwhelmed and small, then I know I need to create environment elements that will cage them in and corner them. If a character needs to feel triumphant/on top of the world then I know I need to let the environment open up around them. etc. If I know my focal point/ where I want to draw attention, I can build the background around that.

Also, backgrounds like figure compositions will have focal points of their own and you can draw attention to it/ the relationship the characters have with the bg element via scale or directionality or color, any number of cues. I think of it almost as a second/third character in a scene.

Not every composition is gonna have something so obvious like this but it helps me to think about these because then the characters feel connected and integrated with the environment.

Some more general art questions

a) Do you have any process/tips to start drawing character/bodies/heads?

I tried to kind of draw something to answer this but honestly this is difficult for me to answer because I don’t think I’m that great at drawing characters LOL. Ok, I think I have two tips.

1) flip your canvas often. A lot about what makes human bodies look correct and believable is symmetry and balance. Even if someone has asymmetrical features, the body will often pull and push in a way to counterbalance it. we often have inherent biases to one side or another like dominant hands dominant eyes etc. you know how right-handed artists will often favor drawing characters facing 45 degrees facing (the artist’s) left? that’s part of it. so viewing your drawing flipped even just to evaluate it helps compensate for that bias and makes you more aware of balance.

2) draw the whole figure often. I feel like a lot of beginner artists (myself included for a long time) defer to just drawing headshots or busts because it’s easier, you dont have to think about posing limbs etc. But drawing a full body allows you to better gauge proportion, perspective, body language, everything that makes a character look believable and grounded.

Like if you (me) have that issue where you draw the head too big and then have to resize it to fit the proportions of the rest of the body, it’s probably because you (I) drew the head first and are treating the body as an afterthought/attachment. Sketching out the whole figure first or even just quick drawing guides for it will help you think of it more holistically. I learned this figure drawing in charcoal at art school LOL.

oh. third mini tip - try to draw people from life often! its the best study. if you can get into a figure drawing/nude drawing class EVEN BETTER and if you have a local college/art space/museum that hosts those for free TREASURE IT AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT, that’s a huge boon that a lot of artists (me again) wish they had. though if youre not so lucky and youre sitting in a park trying to creeper draw people and they keep moving.. don’t let that stop you! that’s good practice because it’s forcing you to work fast to get the important stuff down LOL. its a challenge!

b) I’ve been pretty out of energy and have had no inspiration to draw but I have the desire to. Any advice?

Dude, take a walk or something.... Or a nap? Low energy is going to effect everything else so you gotta hit that problem at its source.

If you’re looking for inspiration though, I’d recommend stuff like watching a movie, reading a book, playing video games etc. Fill up your idea bank with content and then give yourself time/space to gestate it into new concepts. Sometimes looking at other art works but sometimes it can work against you because it’s too close.

Also something that helps me is remembering that art doesn’t always have to be groundbreaking... like it’s okay to make something shitty and stupid that you don’t post online and only show to your friend. That’s all part of the process imo. If you want to hit a home run you gotta warm up first, right? Sports.

I should probably compile everytime i give tips on stuff like this but that’s getting dangerously close to being a social media artist who makes stupid boiled down art tutorials for clout which is the last thing i want to be... the thing I want to stress is that art is a whole visual language and there are widely agreed upon rules and customs but they exist in large part to be broken. Like there's an infinite number of ways to reach an infinite number of solutions and that’s actually what makes it really cool and personal for both the artist and the viewer. So when you make work you like or you find someone else’s work you like, take a step back and ask yourself what about it speaks for you, what about it works for you, what makes it effective, how to recreate that effect and how to break that effect completely, etc. And have a good time with it or else what’s the point.

For the last one, I don’t actually believe I’ve ever addressed artwork as insp for stories/rp but I’ll say here and now yeah go ahead! As long as you’re not making profit or taking credit for my work then I’m normally ok with it. Especially anything thats private and purely recreational, that’s generally 100% green light go. You hummed in understatement and watch how the people on the screen struggled to take care of babies, failing in washing or feeding them. Unable to hold the laughter any longer at how clumsy they were, you drifted your eyes to Yeosang, finding out he probably didn't find it as funny as you did. His face focused as if he was trying to learn as many things as possible, his eyes shining softly in loveliness. „What's with that look honey?” noticing you staring at him, he took his eyes off the screen, looking at your face, curiousness hearable in your voice.

„I just liked how cute it was, the giggling of the babies and how tiny they look, with their big eyes. You just want to smother them with kisses and cuddle them all day long.” You expected everything, but definitely not this, looking at him in shock. „Oh wow, I mean, yeah, they're cute.. do you want one? I've been playing with this idea in my head for a long time, but I didn't know how to approach you with it. Do you want a kid?”

Byeol must be feeling lonely...” pouting and shrugging your eyebrows, you scoffed at his words playfully. „I'm feeling lonely too, so make me a baby, we might consider buying another kitty, but first things first, I want a child, think of the idea, we could shower it with love, play with it, imagine walking it to the kindergarten every day, the idea itself is just so precious.” smiling at your words San thought about the idea as well, firstly seeing you with a swollen belly, he could peck every day and then caress it singing to the baby in the womb, then after it was born, just seeing the tiny bundle of love sleep in his arms, all those making his heart flutter, sooner or later after some serious discussions, agreeing to try for a baby.

As you woke up to the sound of your alarm, sitting up, you noticed that Mingi's side of the bed was empty and cold, meaning he left a long time ago „He's probably training already...“ Stretching your body to wake up properly, you went down to the kitchen to get yourself a glass of water to start the day. Instead being met with a fully served table full of your favourite breakfast meal. „If you want a baby, you have to eat proper and healthy meals, I actually heard you yesterday, so don't worry, you don't have to overgo the conversation again, I'm in. Now, come and eat before it gets cold.“

Come on, have you ever taken care of a baby? Trust me you'd love it, I could take care of you and the baby as well and shower you both with my love. You won't let me baby you and take care of you anymore since you try to act like an independent adult, that's why I want a baby or kitten I can spoil with love.“ laying his head in your lap, looking up at you. „If that's why, you can baby me, but no baby for a few years and no cat, it'll leave fur and hair everywhere. But if you insist, rather the baby than the cat.“
