None of us are a “Forbes 30 Under 30”. We don’t have a meeting with Universal Studios. We also didn’t write a book with a cringy self-insert character, horrible naming conventions, and the worst example of enemies to lovers we’ve ever seen, though, so… we are okay with it. Even if we are a bunch of losers, please stick around. We also discuss Irish-isms, book to movie adaptations, and more!
And don’t forget your starstick! You’re gonna need it where we’re going.

merlin live thoughts - compiled for your convenience - ep 1
[added to give context.]
[narration begins]
kilgarha [not going to spell his name right don’t care] calls merlin a young man in the narrative intro and then switches to boy the next time. why is he a young boy in the little voice over?
[intro music plays. scenes playing over intro music] why don’t i recognize any of the scenes in this intro? has it been this long?
[back to Merlin hiking to camelot] saw merlin wanted it to be lancelot. was sad. usually i start with the lancelot eps but i am not. not today. [ :( ]
he smiles cute. what a dork. good for him.
[merlin walks into Camelot and doesn’t know they’re about to kill a guy] he’s so excited for the little horns blowing and then it’s like heart break. oh baby. baby. poor baby. what a terrible introduction
why does uther say his [own] name like that? i hate him.
what’s fair and just about killing a guy uther?
i want to have a mean nickname for uther but uther is already a bad name.
[after they kill the guy I am confused] what societal -ism is magic an allegory for in this damn show????
[angry mom yelling at uther from the place where her son’s just been killed] hammurabi’s code? okay girl ig.
[girl goes in a puff of smoke] best magic disappearance in the whole show. not used nearly enough. more people should disappear like the dead guys mom.
[merlin wanders around looking for gaius] he’s holding his little backpack straps the whole time and it makes him look so young. baby. baby. baby.
[first view of gaius office/chambers/whatever] i like the set for-
[pauses to obsess about weird set choices] wait i’m sorry. what the fuck is this
Tumblr media
[description in alt text]
why do you have this? i’m cackling because there’s no explanation that i can think of that isn’t joyous or hilarious. is there an ao3 tag for Gaius’ weird rabbit mask? missed opportunity not to have this be the mask merlin wears in my enchanted fic [mercelot cinderella au]. fuck. that would’ve been hilarious. comedy rewrite of the enchanted fic where Lancelot falls in love with merlin while he’s wearing this.
okay. unpausing now.
[gaius falls over a railing that has probably been there for 20 years] how has this old man survived this long if that’s all it takes to make him fall the heck down his own stairs in his own house.
[gaius freaking out about Merlin’s magic and it triggers my daddy issues] gaius is very yelly. yells yells yells.
[Gaius says] who are you?? i love this line
[tbh I have no idea what this is a reaction to] gaius is funny in this episode. why isn’t he like this all the time?
gaius’ actor is so earnest when he says thank you. last time anyone will say that to merlin in this show. lol
merlin has his own room and a window. living large! all i can think about is lancleot standing by the window. but it’s fine.
collin is such a good actor. he’s so enthralled by camelot at night.
[voice over of hunith’s letter] gaius is charged with keeping merlin safe. forgot that.
also, “may god save you both” feels like it doesn’t fit.
[morgana’s telling uther killing the sorcerer sucked] i love morgana’s accent. is it in the rest of the show? if not we deserved more of it.
“the more brutal you are the more enemies you’ll create” including morgana. especially morgana. morgana was right.
[lady helen in her tent, but I couldn’t remember her name was lady helen] love the little mindless humming while the singing lady braids her hair. lady helen. good for her. she has a good smile.
also she missed some hair while she was braiding but we all make choices.
[knights protect lady helen and also dies] sometimes i forget there are knights other than the ones we like.
[lady helen killed by doll stabing] don’t see how having your son killed gives you the moral high ground to kill an innocent person. seems like this makes you the bad guy as well.
how does kilgaha [not changing it] know merlin’s name. i should know this shouldn’t i. idr. [I don’t remember. You’ll see this a lot if I keep doing these]
gaius just taking care of merlin is so cute.
he dropped the water on purpose. [so merlin would pause it with his magic like a little testy test]
[merlin grabs a mop for spilled water] what a good boy cleaning up without being asked.
“don’t do magic merlin” neither gaius nor merlin has any idea how to stop him from doing magic.
[gives the guy the medicine he’s not supposed to take all at once and doesn’t finish his warning ] merlin: stands there and watches him drunk the medicine all at once when he could’ve stopped him.
[arthur being an ass to that little boy with the wooden circle scene] arthur’s hair is kind of good in this scene and it makes me mad because this scene makes me want to claw his fucking eyes out.
who is that kid[with the wooden circle that Arthur throws knives at]?he deserved better.
[arthur says] “run” ugh i want to fucking hurt him. not in a fun way.
[merlin no arthur start to argue] i know they’re establishing that Arthur will grow and merlin has courage, but… ugh.
merlin is also sassy. “i could never have a friend who could be such an ass”
[merlin’s I could take you apart with less than that line] “don’t use magic” immediately intends to use magic to hurt the crown fucking prince. dummy. fails at it because has some sense. dummier
[merlin gets thrown in jail] also. jail? for what? attacking royalty? too high a sentence. unrealistic. [/j]
[fake lady helen enters to meet uther]lady helen’s dress is really weirdly designed. good hair though.
gross that uther kisses her hand. gross that uther.
[I forgot why-]merlin sleeping on a bed of straw? oh that’s right. jail.
gaius taking care of merlin again. [gets merlin out of prison. But there are conditons I remember the scene]
oh it’s the stocks!
gwen is coming!
gaius is laughing. what a jerk. who probably saved merlin from a. couple years in prison. so ig it’s fine.
i love that gwen is in camelot red. it’s so pretty on her and probably signifies who she’ll be later.
[gwen says Merlin’s not a big hero type] she’s so unintentionally mean and awkward. i love her.
“you don’t look like that.”
“i’m in disguise” [merlin’s smile is so cute]
he has such a cute smile.
[Gaius says]“you are a question that has never been posed before merlin.”!!!!
kilgarah :( trapped below. so sad. [kilgarah is calling merlin]
[merlin takes lady helen a potion for her voice] the preparation for lady helen’s voice looks nasty.
merlin is nosy. what the fuck bro. you can’t just do that.
okay plot, but wtf?
[lady helen discovers him in her room.]he looks so suspicious. he doesn’t even say what it is. he just hands her a suspicious bottle from his suspicious hand. don’t drink it girl!
[arthur and merlin meet on the street] god i fucking hate arthur. in this ep.
he [merlin] takes off his coat. they’re gonna throw down.
[arthur throws merlin a mace!] okay, but fighting a subject with a fucking mace? what the fuck “my lord”? [me quoting what merlin just said because I think I’m clever]
“how long have you been training to be a prat my lord” is one of the best lines in this show.
[they destroy various stalls while they fight] also, arthur better be paying for any wears that he is ruining with his little pissing contest.
love that arthur is being beaten up by inanimate objects. love less that he gets to win @ the end.
gaius is yelling again :/
[merlin while gaius is telling him he can’t use magic] “if i can’t use magic i might as well die” that’s a homosexual metaphor if i have ever heard one.
gaius is giving me whiplash with the yelling and then the caring. i cant process it. ik that’s probably how normal parents behave but that just isn’t vibing w/ me. [*]
uther is eating a strawberry and i hate him for it because i like strawberries.
he looks like the guy from buffy in this scene. hate that.
i am too emotionally basic for the complexity of these characters. help. [*this is me processing my inability to process gaius earlier]
merlin: hears a voice[kilgarah] and goes looking for it in the middle of the night.
merlin: this is a good idea.
[merlin covered gaius with covers before he sneaks out] love that the magic is just stop motion of them moving the blanket up him. we love practical effects.
[in the dungeons] knights playing dice. ig we should be writing more about that now.
the dice keep moving and none of them are thinking “magic”. why?
i can’t even fault merlin for going to find kilgarah because i too would go somewhere potentially dangerous if i felt like i was wanted there.
cgi on this dragon is… well. it’s there.
[I decide I want to know how many times destiny is said in this series]
destiny count : 1, 2,
merlin: arthur is the worst. um, i kind of don’t want him to succeed. i would kill him myself if i could
destiny count : 3
i want merlin to escape his destiny, actually.
destiny count : 4
where is kilgarah even going? just away . perching where he can’t be seen to be mysterious.
[merlin going around the castle to give morgana a potion]a jaunty little jog up the stairs.
[morgana thinks merlin is Gwen and she starts to get undressed.] um… real sus not to announce you aren’t who she thinks you are merlin…
[arthur is such a jester] morgana is right about arthur. if someone hasn’t already saved arthurthejester as a url, they should. that’s a good one.
[gwen walks in while merlin is pretending to be gwen] gwen should be mad about this actually. if i were gwen i would simply stomp on merlin’s toes for being in the lady morgana’s room without permission while she was changing. that’s 2008 for you ig.
the weird arthur/morgana thing they almost did. i’m glad they didn’t do that.
[maid sees real lady helen in the mirror] lady helen kills a maid. not worker friendly. don’t approve.
i’m not mad she wants to kill arthur. im mad about all the other people she kills to kill arthur. do assassination normally girl. don’t kill commoners to get back a nobles.
[morgana walks into the feast in the red dress] i think morgana looks very nice. it’s gross that merlin says god have mercy. it’s also gross my most beloved demisexual merlin is looking at her with lust. not compliant with my headcanon. episode is bad now. [\j]
merlin and gwen interacting gives me life. i love them. i genuinely love them. i apologize for any fic i have ever written where they weren’t absolutely together.
they’re not flirting, but they’re flirting.
[re: men gwen would date] “obviously not you.” i love her. she’s so awkward. it makes my heart so happy.
[back in lady Helen’s room] i think the dead maid twitched! she lives! she just passed out! oh good :) stop killing servants 2k22
uthers crown looks stupid. i hate him.
he looks at her[lady helen] with gross eyes.
what language is she [lady helen]singing in? someone? anyone?
i am also entranced by pretty people singing pretty songs.
merlin is so smart covering his ears. baby. baby. baby.
why the cobwebs though?
if she was just gonna stab him [arthur] why didn’t she just sneak into his room disguised as one of his guards to do that? like… knights are noblemen, kill them if you want.
[when merlin saves arthur] i appreciate that we’re seeing merlin be a good person, but he should have simply let him die.
[uther makes merlin a manservant] “i will reward you by making you a servant and usurping you from whatever life you have to serve my terrible son.”
the only good thing about this is arthur also does not want merlin to be his manservant.
[gaius going> now you can keep the prince safe w/ magic] protect the prince with your magic? this could be queerer. this should be queerer :/
merlin being handed the magic book
[pause thought to] destiny count : 5
is like being shown that other gay people existed and thrived in the time before. it matters so much to see those real artifacts of queerness. i made magic queer again. i feel better.
final thoughts:
i love merlin, gwen, morgana
i wish lancelot was here
gaius is fine ig
arthur and uther make me want to commit real actual criminal murder.
stop killing common people to injure the nobility. this is wrong and unforgivable.
okay. ep 1! this was fun. i’ll post this eventually. maybe. if you’re reading this i posted it.

Ashlesha & Toxic Relationships
Tw: abuse, incest, rape, death, domestic violence
I feel like Ashlesha's mommy issues have been covered by others before but I really wanted to explore how Ashlesha nakshatra natives often find themselves in toxic relationships, be it in their own homes or in romantic relationships. I think many of the patterns many people repeat in adult relationships has its roots in their childhood relationships with their family and I see this very evident with many Ashlesha natives. They're often abused at home and later suffer abuse at the hands of partners.
Tumblr media
Halle Berry Ashlesha Sun
Halle's father was a violent man who abused her mother repeatedly. He abandoned them when she was 4 and she's been estranged from him since.
She moved with her mother and sister to an all-white neighbourhood where she was exposed to racial discrimination while attending school. Halle admits that these struggles motivated her to succeed. Later in the ’90s, when she moved to New York to pursue her acting career, she was forced to stay in a homeless shelter for a while because she couldn’t afford accommodations.
In 2011, Halle said: "It was only when I was in an abusive relationship and blood squirted on the ceiling of my apartment and I lost 80% of my hearing in my ear that I realised, I have to break the cycle."
Halle is divorced from Gabriel Aubry (in photo with her above) who, she accused of being a racist (he used racial slurs towards her and their daughter), refused to acknowledge their daughter as biracial and court documents revealed that Berry accused him of having been in an incestuous relationship with a family member, abusing their daughter and even revealed the couple only had sex three times a year, with Aubry struggling with the effects of his incestuous relationship.
Tumblr media
Charlize Theron- Ashlesha Sun, Moon & Mercury
One night, when her verbally abusive alcoholic father came home with his brother after drinking heavily, he threatened her mother with a gun. He began shooting and Theron's mother grabbed her gun and shot back, killing Theron's father and wounding his brother. Police later determined it was self-defence. They later moved to America so Charlize could pursue an acting career.
Tumblr media
Lily Collins, Ashlesha Moon
Lily Collins says she was once in a toxic relationship where she faced "verbal and emotional abuse" that made her feel "very small." Looking back, Lily says her then-boyfriend silenced her feelings and even fuelled emotions of "panic" and "anxiety" -- and it's something that still affects her even though she’s now in a healthy relationship.
"He would call me 'Little Lily'…and he'd use awful words about me in terms of what I was wearing and would call me a whore and all these things," she said on the "We Can Do Hard Things" podcast. "There were awful words and then there were belittling words. I became quite silent and comfortable in silence and feeling like I had to make myself small to feel super safe."
Tumblr media
Tina Turner, Ashlesha Rising
Tina’s violent marriage with Ike Turner is well known, largely thanks to the film based on her life, What’s Love Got To Do With It. In the film the singer suffered severe beatings, was raped and had cigarettes stubbed out on her body. Her husband Ike is portrayed as a violent, controlling sociopath, and when Tina’s autobiography was published Ike actually admitted that the book was largely accurate. The pair were married for 16 years before Tina had the courage to leave. Ike is now dead.
I found something she said in an interview to closely correlate to Ashlesha:
"Part of my spiritual practice is to “change poison into medicine,” to take negative situations or roadblocks and transform or remove them through positivity. The force of my positivity pushed all the discriminatory “isms” standing in my way right out the window."
Tumblr media
Whitney Houston- Ashlesha Sun & Venus
Their turbulent relationship is well documented, but even though the rumors were that Bobby used to hit Whitney, she actually claimed it was the other way round. In an interview with the Associated Press over 10 years ago, the singing star said: “Contrary to belief, I do the hitting, he doesn’t. He has never put his hands on me. We are crazy for one another. I mean crazy in love, love, love, love, love. When we’re fighting, it’s like that’s love for us. We’re fighting for our love.” Brown, however, was later arrested in 2003 for misdemeanour battery, several years after Whitney said this. The pair eventually divorced after 15 years of marriage in 2007.
Unfortunately, Whitney passed away in 2012 and I firmly believe Bobby did it. Her daughter, Bobbi Brown also passed away in the exact same way in 2015 and there's just no way those 2 deaths were a coincidence. Anytime I hear news of anybody dying in their bathtub after overdosing on a cocktail of drugs, I just know they were murdered. Its very easy to write off deaths as suicide or to make it look like one. Its all the more convincing if the person has a history of drug abuse.
Tumblr media
Sridevi, Ashlesha Sun & Rising
Sridevi was forced into acting by her mother (who aspired to be an actress and had failed in her pursuit) when she was 2-3yrs old. Sridevi never received formal education and appeared in 200 films by the time she was 25 years old (she did 300 films total). Her mother and stepfather had another daughter whom they favoured. Sridevi was the cash cow of the household. It was once reported that Sridevi would come home from a long day of filming and spend many hours massaging her mother's feet at night instead of sleeping. Her mother once locked up Sridevi in a dark room and starved her as a 5-year-old because she was too scared to do a scene that involved fire. She became a heroine at the age of 11 years and was paired opposite men who had played her grandad onscreen when she was a child star🤮🤮🤮she was sexually assaulted by many of these men as a child and teenager. Sridevi's mother managed all her finances and did not permit her to go out or meet others and she did not even know how to do virtually anything by herself as her mother kept her under lock and key.
Her husband Boney Kapoor is a movie producer who was married to another woman and had 2 kids when he first met Sridevi. He creepily wooed her for 10 years but Sridevi paid him no mind. In 1995, Sridevi's mother passed away and Boney took full advantage of her vulnerability because even though she was 32, she was basically a child due to the way her mother forced her to live. Sridevi had no one to rely on (her stepfather had died many years prior and her sister sued her for properties and since she was so isolated, she had no friends despite being such a huge star) and Boney took her in. She lived with Boney and his wife and kids but before you knew it, Sridevi was impregnated by him and he soon divorced his wife and married her. In 2018, Sridevi was found dead in a bathtub in Dubai under suspicious circumstances. The case was wrapped up pretty quickly and no one really knows what happened. She allegedly "drowned" but like I said, I dont think all these celebs drowning in their bathtubs is a coincidence.
Tumblr media
Zsa Zsa Gabor- Ashlesha Moon
She was married 9 times and many of those marriages were hella toxic. She was married to Conrad Hilton (Paris Hilton's great-grandfather)
She said of the marriage:
"Conrad's decision to change my name from Zsa Zsa to Georgia symbolized everything my marriage to him would eventually become. My Hungarian roots were to be ripped out and my background ignored. ... I soon discovered that my marriage to Conrad meant the end of my freedom. My own needs were completely ignored: I belonged to Conrad."
Gabor's only child, daughter Constance Francesca Hilton, was born in 1947. According to Gabor's 1991 autobiography, One Lifetime Is Not Enough, her pregnancy resulted from rape by then-husband Conrad Hilton.
Tumblr media
Marilyn Monroe- Ashlesha Rising
Marilyn had a very difficult life. She grew up in foster homes, her mother was schizophrenic and her father was an alcoholic. Her marriages were unhappy and she was treated like shit by the industry. I don't want to elaborate too much because I feel like everyone already knows about her life story but its truly tragic how things were for her :((
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball- Ashlesha Sun
She was married to her onscreen husband Desi Arnaz and they had a horrible toxic marriage where he cheated on her repeatedly and emotionally abused her. He was also an alcoholic.
Tumblr media
Bella Hadid, Mars in Ashlesha atmakaraka
"I constantly went back to men -- and also, women -- that had abused me, and that's where the people-pleasing came in," Hadid said on the Victoria's Secret podcast, "VS Voices."  "I started to not have boundaries, not only sexually, physically, emotionally, but then it went into my workspace….I began to be a people-pleaser with my job and it was everyone else's opinion of me that mattered except for my own, because I essentially was putting my worth into the hands of everyone else and that was the detriment of it."
Everybody already knows that Yolanda is toxic as hell, made Bella get a nose job at 14yrs of age and in Bella's own words she was made to feel like the "uglier sister".
Tumblr media
Viola Davis, Ashlesha Sun
She and her sisters were sexually abused by their brother. "Sexual abuse back in the day didn't have a name. The abusers were called 'dirty old men' and the abused were called 'fast' or 'heifers,'" she wrote in her memoir.
Davis wrote about the volatile relationship between her empathetic mother and her violent, alcoholic father. With brutal candidness, she channels the unrelenting terror of living in a household of domestic abuse: “There are not enough pages to mention the fights, the constantly being awakened in the middle of the night or coming home after school to my dad’s rages and praying he wouldn’t lose so much control that he would kill my mom.”
Tumblr media
Lil Kim, Ashlesha Moon
When she sat down for a candid interview with Newsweek back in 2000, the rapper revealed that she developed a complex about her appearance thanks to a string of unsavory suitors. "All my life men have told me I wasn't pretty enough — even the men I was dating," she revealed. "I'd be like, 'Well, why are you with me, then? I have low self-esteem and I always have," she admitted. "Guys always cheated on me with women who were European-looking. You know, the long-hair type. Really beautiful women. That left me thinking, 'How can I compete with that?' Being a regular black girl wasn't good enough."
It wasn't just the men she dated in her early days that messed with Lil Kim's head — according to the rapper, her own father added to her issues. Her parents divorced when she was 8 and, despite the fact that she wanted to remain with her mother, her dad won custody. When she spoke to Newsweek ahead of the release of her second studio album, The Notorious K.I.M, she revealed that her father would regularly make her feel as though she wasn't good enough. "It was like I could do nothing right," she recalled. "Everything about me was wrong — my hair, my clothes, just me."
Tumblr media
Ella Fitzgerald, Ashlesha Rising
At a young 15 years old, Fitzgerald was left motherless and fatherless. To make matters worse, she began being abused by her stepfather. The beatings were physical, but they scared her emotionally as well. She was a beaten and battered child. Her grades fell to be nearly unrecoverable, and she began skipping school regularly. It was an era of racial segregation and Ella is also believed to have been physically abused by her teachers along with some other black students.
Ella and Marilyn were good friends and are said to have bonded over their similarly traumatic lives.
Tumblr media
Katie Holmes, Ashlesha Moon & Rising
She escaped an abusive marriage with the sociopathic Tom Cruise and his cult??? need I say more?? I am so happy she is alive and well and that she has managed to protect her daughter as well. Scientologists are insane people who absolutely destroy the lives of anybody who tries to leave their system so its a miracle that Katie is alive and doing well.
Tumblr media
Glenn Close, Ashlesha Rising
I don't know what it is about Ashleshas and being trapped/escaping a cult but I've noticed several Ashlesha natives all have this experience
Oscar-nominated actress Glenn Close, for example, was part of a cult called the Moral Re-Armament, from the young age of 7 all the way up to 22. “If you talk to anybody who was in a group that basically dictates how you’re supposed to live and what you’re supposed to say and how you’re supposed to feel, from the time you’re 7 till the time you’re 22, it has a profound impact on you,” she once told The Hollywood Reporter.
Tumblr media
Patricia Arquette- Ashlesha Moon
Oscar winner Patricia Arquette wasn’t just raised in Virginia’s Skymont Subud cult, but her parents were the founders of it. The so-called “spiritual movement” was known for not allowing access to bathrooms, electricity, or running water in the name of “inner guidance.”
While still living with her family, she and her family left the commune to return to a more conventional life. Per ABC, however, the Arquette family wasn’t any better at that time either. “There was a lot of drama in the house,” Arquette said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. “There were a lot of chairs flying around.”
Tumblr media
Brie Larson- Ketu in Ashlesha
Brie starred in two movies, The Glass Castle & The Room that both deal with abusive relationships (she is the one stuck in them)
Our Ketu placement is where we draw our creativity from, so its interesting that Brie has played so many characters who have to deal with toxicity.
According to Hindu mythology, Ashlesha nakshatra is associated with the story of the Naga King Vasuki. It is said that Vasuki and his wife were cursed by a sage to become snakes. In order to lift the curse, they sought the help of Lord Vishnu, who advised them to perform a penance in the ashram of a sage named Jaratkaru. After performing the penance, the sage granted their wish and they were able to regain their human form. Since then, Ashlesha nakshatra has been associated with transformation and the power of penance.
In the list of celebrities I have mentioned, many of them survived their abuse and went on to live good lives but many others met with tragic ends. Being "cursed" is part of Ashlesha's mythology, which is why they receive an unfair share of bad experiences and abuse but to perform penance is very very important and something not many are going to be able to do. When so many terrible things happen to you, you're bound to think "why me? I'm a good person, I don't deserve this" and that's absolutely true, no one deserves abuse but the ones who can outlive these negative circumstances are the ones who can in Tina Turner's words "turn poison into medicine". Penance literally means inflicting punishment upon oneself but what it actually means in this context is to turn all your negative experiences that feel like you're being punished into something you can rise up above against. Poison is also part of Ashlesha's lore and while this does make Ashlesha natives rather malicious and manipulative towards others, they need to be able to use this poison as medicine to heal themselves. Otherwise, they end up succumbing to it.

Chứng khoán Mỹ chìm trong sắc đỏ do lo ngại Fed duy trì lãi suất cao

Engagement!
Tanner and Tabitha are engaged!
Tumblr media
Tanner felt the Lord moving in his heart to propose to Tabitha, so after asking for her parents permission he and his parents made the drive into Willowcreek for dinner with the Hobsons. The group had dinner at a new restaurant, taking the opportunity to fellowship with one another and talk about current events.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Towards the end of their meal, Tanner asked Tabitha if they could ‘talk about something’ by their table. Once they were up and standing by the table, Tanner got down on one knee and asked Tabitha to marry him, and she said yes!

Congratulations to the happy couple!

verbal or non - verbal communication (jasper)
Jasper by nature prefers non verbal communication. He stumbles over his words and has difficulty saying what he means, especially when he’s stressed or in a bout of depression or anxiety. Communicating with touches or expressions feels more comfortable to him, especially with the people he’s closest to. That’s one of the ways he knows he can trust someone - if they can read him without him needing to explain what he’s feeling.

(i’m only doing dracula secondhand rn, although i have read it ever, and i’m delighted that everyone’s having fun but i gotta say, the inevitable way in which the usual tumblr discourse is starting to creep in around the edges as people belatedly discover that the text is, gasp, Problematic is—a lil exhausting 2 me? like. of course the text is Problematic. maybe tumblr book club can do wilkie collins next and really have fits. like. what kinds of things did you expect a victorian-era brit* to position as scary??
and like. not fair of me, probably. people don’t know shit and it’s good they’re learning and it’s always good to contemplate and analyze things! but at the same time it just feels a little like—are you going anywhere with these announcements of Orientalist Spectres Haunting Europe, etc? or are you just having fits abt having made contact with something Impure, and trying to expiate yr sins by squawking about it?
like. idk. i love analysis! but some of the posts i’ve seen starting to float around just feel like. halfway between Baby’s First High School English Essay (That Doesn’t Really Have a Thesis, Just Descriptions of What’s Happening in the Text) and, like, scrupulosity? like. tell me something about all the fucked-up fears stoker is leveraging here! make an argument! just announcing that these things exist in the text feels like. no shit. so glad we could crowdsource a second sparknotes (now with more guilt!) right here on tumblr dot edu, so we don’t have to look anything up.
idk, i’m having trouble articulating exactly what’s alienating me about this, and i do realize i’m probably being excessively irritable! really i think it’s just like, i desperately want a mode of reaction to media—to the world, really—that’s more complex than either ‘shhh, i’m averting my eyes from anything troubling abt this bc Capitalism Has Worn Me Down and now i’m too depressed and exhausted to engage with anything in a way that isn’t purely escapist,’ or else ‘i’m going to enumerate all the -isms that Taint this narrative, in a way that strongly suggests i’d prefer some kind of ahistorically, implausibly sanitized version of it so i was spared the necessity of confronting anything real or difficult, and could revert back to the aforementioned eyes-averted escapist mode without being Tainted by Associating With Problematic Narratives I Failed to Denounce As Is Proper…’
that’s a lot of words and not a lot of clarity, but basically: there has to be a more generative mode of engagement somewhere, somehow, that isn’t just this facile binary in which we either spit something out immediately, like reactive children, or else swallow it whole! i want to chew on stuff, and build muscle.)
⸻ * it has been pointed out in the comments, and i agree, that this is an oversimplifying elision—stoker was, yes, british, but more specifically irish (which i did know, but didn’t say), and while really this phrasing was an attempt to gesture at the way in which brit-ish orientalist anxieties are activated in the text, not compress stoker into an uncomplicatedly imperialist boogeyman, it’s still a reductive description! like. ‘colonized artist leans into colonizer anxieties, aligns self as sympathetic narrator with Correct Worldview at expense of more-othered Foreigners’ is still not an especially innovative analysis, but it does at least immediately bump the complexity of our model from binary to trinary—a complication devoutly to be wished, under the circs!

Hot take but people need to stop saying that the hunger games trilogy is THE book series that talks about fighting against oppression when it’s not???? Unpopular opinion but it’s message about fighting against your oppressors is actually terrible. The Hunger Games trilogy’s message about freedom was that you NEED to be peaceful or else you are just as terrible as your oppressive government which is a message that has been used to EXCUSE oppressive systems. The oppressed do NOT need to be gentle when it comes to fighting for their freedom. The districts had every right to use militancy to get rid of the Capitol. Using militancy or being peaceful when you fight against your oppressors are both valid and one is not better than the other. But The Hunger Games doesn’t get that. What it does instead is frame brown people (Gale) as violent for wanting freedom and say that white characters represent peace (Peeta). The author literally writes in the book that Gale represents fire and anger and that Peeta is better because he is peaceful. That’s racism 101. She made Gale into this violent monster in the end even though he cared so much for people. The Hunger Games actually excuses oppression through its writing of Gale and the other rebels while claiming that the books are about fighting for your freedom but you guys just keep on putting Suzanne Collins on a pedestal and eating up her (shitty) opinions about freedom. THG trilogy is outdated and you guys need to accept that instead of being stuck in 2012 and constantly praising it and its (shitty) white author who clearly came from a privileged background.
I love how you became more unhinged as this went on. Same. These types of random asks are the only reason I know I didn't get a completely different book than the rest of the world. I think so much about these points, you have no idea It should have been clear for everyone that a White woman from North America should not get the final literary word on revolutions/oppression when she is among the privileged herself. Sadly that's not the case. And the reason why we can't have nuanced discussions around these books anymore, I think, it's bc they've become this idyllic example of "see?? YA is GOOD!!" to detract from haters, so it makes people defensive, and nostalgia of course. Like the stupid ass fresh-as-parchment "There's no love triangle in THG! mainstream media is like the capitol" take I have to come across every other week (the trope is there 🙄, just bc it's not the central theme, doesn't magically remove it). These points you bring up I'll never get tired of shouting to the rooftops, bc we (readers) can point fingers at SJM for the lack of LGBT+ characters in her work, or at Ken Foll*t/ GRRM/ 99.9% of male authors and acknowledge that their ingrained sexism seeps into their work, but never Suzanne. Suzanne, who meant to write a story about how war damages people on both sides and only creates death... by using a revolution as a setting and completely ripping away humanity from all her revolutionaries. And I'm not talking about Finnick or Katniss herself who have personal reasons to reluctantly participate, I'm talking about those who thought about COMMUNITY and were fervent in their support. Not a concept I expect a white lib to grasp. What finally confirmed my suspicion that she truly has no fucking clue about it was her writing that cashgrab prequel about freaking Snow, which could have been a wonderful opportunity to explore the insidious nature of privilege/ nationalism/ all of the other isms 🥴, and how they evolve through time. But that would be like asking for a vegan salad from the butcher.
Unfortunate circumstances all around. I still appreciate some things about THG so I don't start shit with fans, but you won't catch me praising them either.

As an agent, has there ever been a time when you wondered if this was really for you or a career still worth pursuing? I'm a writer on sub and in between the long silence, the discourse on Twitter about multiple payments along with all the -ism problems publishing is slow to upend, I am just becoming ver disheartened and wondering if this is even worth it. It just seems like the reason to keep going aren't really worth it in the end unless you're a Suzanne Collins or Stephen King.
Well - as an agent, I haven't. I love my job, I'm lucky to be successful at it, it's fun, I love my colleagues, I love my clients, I love my industry, I love books and helping create them. While no massive multi-billion-dollar world-wide industry can possibly be perfect, as this is capitalism, we are part of society with all the institutionalized racism etc that entails - at least we are helping people with the things we create. (Most of the time, anyway!) -- and yes, it's an incredibly slow industry. This is true - and it's not going to change. Patience is key.
ANYWAY, it's better than digging ditches. I mean - I've never dug ditches. But, when I was a waitress being run off my feet for $2.13 an hour + meagre tips and our boss would literally HIT the waitstaff (like HIT, upside the head, to the GROUND, not "hit on", but also hit on, actually), or when I worked in construction floating sheetrock with a bunch of dudes, or when I worked in minimum-wage soul-sucking retail jobs where rich ladies would scream at me, or when I was an "assistant" (aka 24-hour on-call literal scrubbing-the-floor maid) for a Hollywood person.... I know I would have been pretty grateful to have a job where yeah, you have to work hard, but most of the work-hard involves SITTING VERY STILL and reading or writing! ;-)
I do understand that it's a different situation as a writer, and I can well understand why you might feel discouraged. Here's what I can tell you though:
You don't have to be Suzanne Collins or Stephen King to be successful and build a career as a writer. First of all, SC and SK weren't always rich-and-famous, either - everyone starts somewhere, and mostly that "somewhere" that people start involves about a decade of merciless grinding with no obvious payoff. You may not know it, because what you see that you are comparing yourself to is the SUCCESSFUL version. Very few people brag about how hard it was to sell those first books, or how many rejections they got, or how many books they had to write before they sold one... those struggle stories are not sexy. Even if they DO talk about it (like the "JKR was homeless!" story) -- it is so overshadowed by their success that it doesn't seem like a REAL tale of turmoil, it was just a stepping stone - a blip.
The thing is, when you are ON the stepping stone, it seems quite large and insurmountable. I get that. Just know that there are LOTS of ways that your career as a writer might look - you might never become a SC or an SK - but I know MANY authors who are able to write full time, who are happy and fulfilled and successful, but who are NOT mega-bestsellers or household names. They build those careers over time, with patience and persistence -it's not a "immediate stardom or bust!" situation.
The other thing to remember is - even though authors seem really accessible and everything, so in a way it seems "easy" to be a published author -- uh -- it REALLY ISN'T. This is a career in the arts & entertainment industry. Just the same as being a successful actor or a successful fine art painter or a successful ballerina or a successful violinist or rapper or pop singer or anything else -- it's HARD ! !!! There is a ton of competition! It's a highly coveted job that very few people are HUGE at! There's a trope of a "starving artist" or the actress with ten dollars and a paper suitcase arriving in Hollywood -- well, there's a reason why those tropes exist, and book-writing is the same.
But also - it is possible to be a very happy cello player - and not be Yo-Yo Ma. It is possible to be a happy, working actor, who isn't a household name. So like - also, take it easy on yourself.
I would say, if you don't love what you are doing for what it is - stop doing it. Like - if the ONLY REASON you want to write is so that you can sell your book and be a famous writer -- and it actually makes you miserable -- stop. You can always come back later if you decide you want to -- but maybe JUST STOPPING will feel good.
If you find that writing DOES give you joy, but the publishing industry and trying to make that whole thing work absolutely grinds your gears and you can't take it -- STOP! Just write! Write for yourself! Maybe at some point the stars will align and you'll find that you want to publish again - maybe you will self-publish - maybe you'll share your stories in magazines or something else -- but you don't HAVE TO pursue the whole trad-publishing rigamarole if you don't want to. Release yourself from other people's expectations.

Ramblings about Lucifer referencing Bones, “Close your eyes.” and shows influencing each other
That was never just a Bones reference being made and the season finale admitted it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv_1dJk5yEM
David Boreanaz played the ironically-named Angel on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel: the Series. His character has *so many* parallels with Lucifer (far more than Booth outside of the law enforcement/crime procedural connection).
Angel's spinoff also has noir crime drama aspects mixed with the supernatural starring an immortal protagonist with a dark past and infamously villainous reputation fighting evil as a supernatural private detective in the City of Angels (a city known for its dark underbelly juxtaposed with fame and glamor, broken dreams and chasing eternal youth) and navigating human law (including the LAPD and evil lawyers) while not legally existing.
Angel also fell in love with a blonde human heroine (Buffy Summers) after lifetimes of self-destructive, not-so-heroic behaviors (getting his soul back did *not* make Angel a hero and human Liam was a lecherous drunk with unfulfilled ambitions and father issues) who inspired him to become a better man and make human connections.
AtS made heavy use of sprawling nighttime Downtown L.A. cityscape shots, which Lucifer also shared an abundance of.
During both of their first cases, they failed to save the troubled blonde girl they were trying to help (Tina and Delilah, respectively). They also have a connection inside the LAPD through a blonde cop who also takes their identity secrets pretty badly (Kate Lockley in Angel's case).
Note that Buffy not only screamed (twice, given it repeated during her memory loss in Halloween), but also came after Angel with a crossbow when she thought he'd attacked her mother (it was Darla), so Chloe taking the Devil face reveal (Monster Reveals are iconic old horror imagery) poorly to the point of considering poisoning is par for the course. However, it only took Buffy seven episodes instead of three seasons to get the identity reveal via seeing the horrific second face (arguably also an accident on Angel's part).
They are metaphorically or literally Hell's angels. They also had long stays in Hell or a hell dimension.
Lucifer and Angel are also both Prodigal Sons with long-held grudges against their long-absent fathers (patricide in Liam/Angel(us)'s case) and they're later faced with a situation where they have unexpected, thought-impossible offspring who show up as adults (neither got to raise their miracle child) wanting revenge. Yup, major Connor/Rory parallel there.
Angel is also in a constant struggle with the Powers that Be manipulating his fate and free will (like Lucifer, he's a champion of free will no matter the cost) and making him prophecy's bitch.
Bones famously got jokes about how Booth is Angel getting his Shanshu (made human), since the character is given constant Angel-isms like references to a dark past having killed people (Booth is also named after a historical murderer, in addition to having been a sniper), both being Catholics full of Catholic guilt (note that the Buffyverse is most accurately polytheistic, though Angel does face off against a take on the antichrist--Angel has constant biblical imagery/themes and not just because of vampire iconography), kicking down doors (just not off their entire frames--LOL), turning on a dime and threatening people up against walls, constant wink-wink references to the Buffyverse (familiar casting, references to the Hyperion Hotel, etc...), etc...
The Lucifer finale used the words "Close your eyes." right before Lucifer is sent to Hell. This is literally the BtVS season 2 finale where Buffy kisses Angel and sends him to hell for a century with a stab to the gut (see the season 5 finale, not to mention Lucifer giving up his life for Chloe's à la I Will Remember You).
Note that D.B. Woodside was on BtVS (playing Robin Wood, whose Slayer mother Nikki Wood was killed by Spike). Aimee Garcia was in both episodes of AtS (Birthday--she's older than she looks!) and Bones. See her also playing a cross-wearing religious girl on Supernatural who was slaughtered in a police precinct by Lilith. Kevin Alejandro was also in an episode of Bones.
Tricia Helfer was in an episode of Supernatural playing a ghost who reenacts the night of her death every year. BtVS also had an episode along those lines, but with Buffy and Angelus possessed (not to mention Phantom Dennis!). Lucifer having Dan as a ghost is yet another thing they all have in common (ditto referencing Ghost, Patrick Swayze and/or Unchained Melody--Vincent Schiavelli a.k.a. Ghost's subway ghost was Jenny's uncle Enyos, whom Angelus killed).
Lucifer name-checked Castiel and Supernatural referenced Lucifer using their Lucifer (crime-fighting angel in L.A. made it a double-reference whammy). Supernatural returned the favor again by having Castiel forced to sing in Enochian. Lucifer's reference to his singing voice was already a zing about Misha Collins having to put on that monotone gravel voice and Enochian being far from melodious.
Russell T Davies was quite heavily inspired by the Buffyverse when he revived Doctor Who and spun off Torchwood, so there are absolute tons of Buffy, Angel and Spike respectively in Rose Tyler, the 9th/10th Doctors, Captain Jack Harkness and Captain John Hart (right down to the actor). School Reunion is the episode where the Buffyverse inspiration is most on the nose, complete with Anthony Stewart Head saying "shooty dog thing" in a school setting and a Mayor/Angel-esque speech about the curse of immortality. The Time War gave the Doctor a huge genocide-level guilt complex. Note that the creator of DC comics' version of Lucifer, Neil Gaiman, has also written for Doctor Who and is also the co-creator of Good Omens (the show is brimming with Doctor Who Easter eggs thanks to David Tennant). A barely-recognizable Tom Ellis played Martha Jones' ex-fiancé Tom Milligan during the Year that Never Was, as well.
A lot of shows take inspiration from the Buffyverse and you've probably seen some of them. It isn't just the copycat vampire romance stories either.
Angel's forerunners in turn were a mix of guilt-stricken, rat-eating Louis de Pointe du Lac (his Jekyll/Hyde-esque alter-ego Angelus is closer to the pre-retcon, fully-evil Lestat de Lioncourt, who got woobified into an antihero rocker not unlike Spike--the entire Fanged Four mirror Anne Rice's character lineup), sword-wielding, immortality trope-influencers Connor/Duncan MacLeod of Highlander fighting for the Prize of humanity (akin to Pinocchio becoming a "real boy"--see also Barnabas Collins of Dark Shadows, though he was before vampires became antihero superheroes, not just sympathetic antivillains) and Nick Knight of Forever Knight (vampire detective).
Additionally, Tom Welling was famously the longest-serving Clark Kent of them all (Smallville) on the old WB (there's that DC comics connection, too), so it's not just a Fox shows thing (though Fox, not just Warner Brothers, did indeed own the Buffyverse). One of the least-known things about Clark is that he also has an immortality problem where he wouldn't age parallel to Lois (they wouldn't be able to have kids either) without a workaround. The Kryptonite line directed at Cain/Pierce by Lucifer was quite on the nose! Lucifer and Smallville sort of crossed over even further in Crisis on Infinite Earths, so Tom is canonically the face of both Clark and Cain in parallel universes of the DC multiverse.
Supernatural had quite recently had their own takes on Cain (played by Timothy Omundson, who also played God Johnson) and the Mark of Cain when Lucifer did it. Dan's killer Le Mec was, of course, Rob Benedict, who was God a.k.a. Chuck Shurley, the ultimate villain of Supernatural. Richard Speight, Jr., who was archangel Gabriel/Loki the Trickster, directed a lot of Lucifer's later episodes in addition to being a prolific Supernatural director.
Supernatural and Lucifer use the exact same font for their titles (Supernatural Knight).
The X-Files (which Supernatural referenced constantly) and Supernatural also had stories about nephilim (see the apocryphal Book of Enoch). Lucifer ultimately had two nephilim (forbidden interspecies offspring of angels and humans), even if not saying so as a known concept. Connor can also be compared to the vampire equivalent of being something like a dhampir, though he's not quite that (mostly-but-not-quite-human offspring of two vampires instead of a human/vampire hybrid--see Blade for an actual dhampir). Supernatural has also covered the even rarer cambion species (human/demon hybrid).
