The end of April and beginning of May is one of my favourite times of year. It has many "soft days" in the Irish vernacular and I wrote this poem a few years ago for one of those days. I'll share it again for last few minutes of #PoetryDayIRL (this is a very old video with an old pond) https://t.co/mbCS2UZVpA 💚 #PoetryDayIreland #poetry #pondlife #weather #ireland #naturepoems #softdaythankgod #softday #irishpoetry #irishpoets #DigitalRomantics #poems #poetryisnotdead #Dublin https://www.instagram.com/p/B_n2q57Dl12/?igshid=1i3rbu19ah1pe

WELCOME TO THE TEAM! We are delighted to introduce Gerard Devine. Toughened by life experiences and softened by his surroundings, Gerard Devine is a proud Irish poet who lives a life less ordinary. The former carpenter is a full time firefighter in Dublin City, and his poetry is a comfort to him from the stresses he encounters in his job. Gerard’s poetry is now being studied in O'Connells school Dublin, which boasts literary greats such as Thomas Kinsella, James Joyce, and Luke Kelly, among its past pupils. His poetry uses imagery and imagination and has been described as ‘songs without music’. An animal and nature lover, Gerard lives in the Wicklow mountains with his wife and their rescue dog Saoirse (Irish for freedom). Read today’s #inspirationalpoem. THERE IS HERE For WB Yeats Our hearts of old were hearts of flame that from an ancient sunlight came, through drops of mirroring joy that fell into the moon’s pale silver shell. (But here hearts cry that hearts are slaves, and toss and turn in narrow caves.) Sit where there is no pain nor death, beneath our soft, bare-breathing breath, for there is here, and here is there, so long as moon reflects sun's glare. (Sooth hearts that cry hearts are enslaved. evoke the joy their cravings crave.) Our task is to succumb, accept the mystery of death and breath. Know how pale moon reflects sun's glare: that darkest night holds both with care. (Then heart can feel how heart is saved and fly free of its thought-hewn cave.) ▪️ 🙏📖🌹❤️ ▪️ Get your #freebook of #inspirationalpoetry and find out about Orna’s #poetrymembers at: OrnaRoss.com/freepoetry ▪️ 🙏📖🌹❤️ ▪️ Image reposted with thanks from @midnight_venture ▪️▪️ #poetrylovers #poetryisnotdead #poetryislife #poetryislove #wordpower #amwritingpoetry #indiepoetry #irishpoetry #inspirationalpoetry #poetrybooks #irishpoetrylovers #poet #irishpoet #irishpoetry #poetrybooks #chapbooks (at St Leonards-on-sea) https://www.instagram.com/p/CT9ajKnojSj/?utm_medium=tumblr

Quote of the Day
"A work of art is the unique result of a unique temperament. Its beauty comes from the fact that the author is what he is. It has nothing to do with the fact that other people want what they want."

I still feel shy reading my poetry in public, but with each attempt it gets a little easier. Had a great night at the @creativehubwex poetry night tonight. Can’t wait for the next one.
This is a poem I read tonight called ‘as the world ended’.
—
We lived comfortably
As the world ended,
All things considered.
We stayed in more,
Worked a little less.
The weather got hotter,
Then colder,
And we complained either way.
People were dying
Of course.
But people were always dying.
The news told us
To be cautious
And we were,
For the most part.
We watched a lot
Of cooking shows
And failed
To recreate the recipes.
People were dying,
But our sourdough starter
Was the thing
That preoccupied our thoughts.
We went back to work
Reluctantly,
Students went back to school.
And when,
Weeks later,
Those same students
Were locked inside
Their overpriced accommodation,
Frightened and far from home,
We tutted and said it was a shame.
But truth be told
We were more concerned
With the cake
That got dropped
On Bake Off.
We lived comfortably,
More or less,
As the death toll
Crept on upwards.
We wore our masks
And washed our hands,
And said: “It can’t
Go on forever.”
People were dying,
But people are always dying.
And when we were told
We couldn’t
Go to the funerals
Of friends and acquaintances
We were sad,
But also
We were relieved.
It meant we could
Stay in.
We’d gotten very good
At staying in.
Things got worse,
And worse,
And worse.
With each passing week,
Each rolling news cycle,
Denial got a little bit
Harder.
But humans are nothing
If not persistent.
So we carried on,
And all in all,
We lived comfortably
As the world ended.
