You're fresh out of college and looking for a job. Everyone is hiring. Nobody who's "hiring" is actually hiring. You finally get a call back from somewhere you barely remember applying to (though the voice on the other end sounds synthesized). You pull up the job listing again real quick. The company name and the fact that the listing is for "Minion" are kind of concerning, but you know what, you've interviewed with enough evil corporations by now, you can handle one wearing its true colors on its sleeve. At this point it's a matter of making rent or moving back in with your parents, and as much as you love your family, you can't imagine spending another summer dealing with your brothers' antics. You agree to the interview.

The man who greets you is an enthusiastic older German(?) man who's either way too into cosplay or just that committed to the bit, judging by the lab coat. He made cookies. The tray of cookies is proffered to you by a ten-foot-tall robotic caricature of a 50s businessman. You take a deep breath to calm yourself. You bite into one of the cookies. It's delicious.

You ask the boss about his business model. "Oh you know, a little of this, a little of that, I bounce from project to project a lot." He mentions that his end goal is becoming the undisputed ruler of the surrounding counties. "Really? Not the whole world?" you ask. "I like to set realistic goals," he replies.

As he gives you the tour of his "evil lair," ingrained instincts are screaming at you to report this guy to some kind of authority figure. You remember the salary. You decide that you can always bust him after getting your first paycheck.

The boss asks when you can start. Caught off guard, you say "tomorrow?". Your boss(?) says he'll see you then.

On the way out, you bump into your stepbrother's girlfriend. Your boss introduces her as his daughter. You both silently agree to sidestep the subject for now and act like this is your first time meeting.

You show up to your first day of work. Your boss is putting the finishing touches on a giant machine that was definitely not there yesterday. You are nonplussed. You ask him what it's for and he launches into a convoluted explanation involving his parents always forcing him to put his shirts on backwards so the tag was in front. You think he should probably talk to a therapist.

Your brothers' exotic pet breaks down the wall. You stare at him. He stares at you. Incredulously, you say his name. "Oh, good, you two already know each other!" your boss says. You mention that you used to live with him. "What? Perry the Platypus, you never mentioned having a roommate."

This is what I like to imagine Candace Flynn's life is like, post P&F.

Bruce: let’s see. Tim is either asleep or hacking the network as we speak. Dick is hanging from the lighting fixtures. Jason is holding Duke up to try and find the air vents to see if they’ll fit in them. Cass is perfect as always. Stephanie and Damian are trying to see who can steal the most watches from the audience. Do I LOOK like I know what the hell I’m doing here?!

TV interviewer, used to the Wayne shenanigans: at least no one’s died, though.

Jason, Steph, and Damian: YOU WOULD THINK.

Bruce: I have no more control over my children than I do over a feral mongoose.

Tim:….. why the fuck did you decide on MONGOOSE for that example.

Bruce: it was the first one to spring to mind.

Tim: a MONGOOSE?!

Stephanie: I prefer to think of myself as more of a delightfully quirky platypus.

Duke: how is this on TV and none of you are getting sent to asylums??

Jason: Strong words from someone half in and half out of the air vent in the WALL.

rui facts that are common knowledge atp but i just feel like repeating

hates vegetables because of their texture, and dislikes anything that has similar texture to certain vegetables. example: he hates watermelon because apparently to him the texture is just like a cucumber's? he's not very fond of many fruits either, albeit he dislikes them less than vegetables

only eats at places he's a regular at and becomes distressed when the menu changes. he picks off all vegetables from his food and sometimes emu helps him and eats anything he doesn't like

preferred rivers and lakes over pools as a kid. he would search for shiny rocks and the like in these rivers and lakes and show nene his discoveries

he owned many encyclopedias as a kid. one of them being one about poisonous plants. it had a bright red cover that scared nene LMAO but he read it over and over so now he can recognize which plants are poisonous or not

favourite animal is the platypus because he finds the fact that they are egg-laying mammals interesting

owns three monitors. has a tablet (owned this tablet since he was a kid) and a phone

horrible at packing! he's always thinking about worst case scenarios and possible hypotheticals that could occur during his travels, causing him to overpack and not use half of the things he brings. he mentions that this was the case when he went to america with wxs, and he struggled with the same problem when he was trying to pack for his kyoto trip in pandemonium

his favourite show he performed with wxs was the little mermaid. the show that made him feel the most nervous was a pianist named torpe, and the show that left the strongest impression on him was the one tsukasa performed with the others to convince him to join wxs again

dislikes cleaning because he finds it pointless when his room just becomes cluttered again sooner or later

worst sleep schedule known to man. has been scolded by wxs for coming to rehearsal with horrible eye bags

he people watches a lot. very observant of his environment and uses anything that catches his attention as inspiration for shows and other stories. this can be seen in island panic, where he makes up an entire possible conversation between three monkeys he was observing and in the area convo where he views students fighting to buy bread at the tuck shop as a metaphor for human nature and survival

his role model and inspiration is a director named tom gray! he watched interviews of him and read his books over and over

enjoyer of sci-fi

eats his taiyaki by first splitting it in half to avoid burning his mouth with the hot bean paste. interestingly enough, it is said in japan that the first bite you take in taiyaki determines your personality. rui breaks his taiyaki first before eating, making him a "person of action."

he deepened his interest for shows as a kid by imagining how he would adapt his favourite books into stage productions

there's a specific stool in his room that has remained since his childhood. also an orange box of toys(?) It seems

on the other hand, several aspects of his childhood room have changed: his lampshades are in the shapes of flowers now, his couch is patched up in blue, and he has multiple streamers and balloons. the balloons have little faces on them btw. he also installed a clock. the step ladder near his bookshelf is gone too from what i can see

OOOOH! A PLATYPUS ASK!!! Alright. Gonna try maintaining a formal voice, but only because I can't communicate using nothing but giggles and giddy squeals!!! I am also taking this ask as an excuse to go on a one hour platypus studying spree!

Alright! So! A lot of people seem to be surprised when they learn that platypuses have venom, but they seem to get more surprised when they learn the venom is PAINFUL as HECK! The pain can last for days, weeks, even months, and most pain killers don't even work on it! Apparently, there was some guy in australia who got stung by a platypus in the hand, and, when interviewed about it FIFTEEN years later, HE STILL FELT DISCOMFORT AND STIFFNESS IN THE HAND! FIFTEEN YEARS LATER! So, yeah, platypus venom really hurts. It doesn't kill humans, but apparently it can kill small animals. ALSO. PLATYPUSES GLOW UNDER UV LIGHT?! Yep, Platypuses are fluorescent!! Also, platypuses have FIVE chromosomes to determine sex, which usually birds have?! That's not where the bird similarities stop though, NOPE! Platypuses also have a cloaca, which serves as a multi purpose tool, in a sense! Absolutely hilarious, because people have been wondering what the heck platypuses even are for the longest time! Platypuses are one of only FIVE different monotremes! There are only FIVE MONOTREMES! Monotremes meaning egg laying mammals, the other four being echidnas. Also, little fun platypus tidbit, according to my Korean dad, the word platypus in korean is literally translated to, "duck raccoon." Also, the scientific name of the platypus has been changed, like, three times! It was originally going to be, Platypus anatinus but then they discovered that some random BEETLE of all things had already called dibs on the Platypus part, so they changed it to Ornithorhynchus paradoxus, absolutely hilarious that they decided to add, "paradox," at the end! The first bit, Ornithorhynchus, just means duck-like. So this name really just means, "duck-like paradox." Who says scientists aren't creative? Anyways, it was finally changed to Ornithorhynchus anatinus, which means, DUCK-LIKE BIRD-SNOUT! WE GET IT GUYS! STOP WITH THE BIRD COMPARISONS!

Anyways, I love platypuses so much(I am by NO MEANS an expert, and all my knowledge comes from the internet, so, you know, I might be wrong). ALSO, I do not know exactly how much you love whale sharks, but I would love to hear all about them!!!

2016 VoicePlay spring events — love all around

A busy winter for VoicePlay rolled into equally packed spring months, full of concerts, educational outreach, personal projects, and growing families.

Here, there, and everywhere

The guys began their spring with a few weeks working on new music at home, during which they fit in a colorful corporate gig alongside Layne's sister- and brother-in-law.

.

The second weekend in April was an absolute whirlwind. They started just outside Denver at the annual CHSAA music festival, where they got to spend two days with student vocal groups, and found a reminder of a friend.

.

From there they headed east for the Boston Sings festival and the CARA ceremony. They didn't win for their "Phantom" video, but they did get to see Deke receive his well-deserved lifetime achievement award in person.

.

The next day, they drove out to Worcester for a matinee concert and a radio interview with Bonnie Johnson on "Colors of Jazz" before flying back home.

Snow-verdue

The next weekend, the boys traveled back to Wisconsin to make up the second show that had been cancelled by winter weather earlier in the year. One stalwart young fan was so determined to see them that she and her prom date skipped the big dance in favor of the show.

Love you lady, bye bye

During a brief few days back at home, Eli proposed to his girlfriend Ashley before the boys hopped on the Disney Magic for the first of four cruises they'd booked over the next couple of months.

The other work didn't stop just because they were at sea, though. Some of their downtime was spent creating new arrangements and rehearsing for upcoming video shoots. (They did get up to some shenanigans on board, of course.)

After the Magic ended, they had a few days at home before hopping aboard the Disney Wonder.

Give it up for auditioner Tom and his well-timed platypus!

During the few days between the second and third cruise gigs, they filmed the video for "My Shot". Also, Eli and Ashley acquired a new little buddy, a pup named Anna (after the Frozen character).

Then during the three weeks between the third and fourth voyages, VoicePlay recorded their "Aca Top 10 — Bro Country" video with Chris Rupp, released the "Aca Top 10 — Old School Rap" video, and held a launch day event for "My Shot" at Full Sail University.

Hey, baby

Just before they were scheduled to set sail again, Layne and Cyndi welcomed their daughter Doris to the world. (Her new uncles were pretty excited, too.)

A little help from their friends

With that happy event, the contingency plans for Layne's paternity leave kicked in, including a few local friends. On their final cruise of the season, Max Herskovitz stepped in on percussion. Erik Winger also subbed for Tony so he could focus on finishing preparations for the impending public launch of PattyCake Productions.

The weekend after they returned to dry land, the guys scooped up buddy Antonio Fernandez once more and trundled down to the Gulf Coast for a concert in Pinellas Park.

By the time they were ready to head up to Ohio for camp at the end of June, Layne was back in the mix (at least for non-oceanic matters), but that's a story that deserves its own post.
