you can’t ever underestimate how good of an actor laura bailey is especially when you remember that the abby audition for tlou2 was literally the joel scene and she nailed it so hard that neil druckmann was like ‘well fuck, it’s her’

The idea that Dancer didn't and couldn't have known that FCG was a person, and is thus absolved of any responsibility for treating them like an object comes up every once in a while, and, like. Folks. She knew FCG had enough capacity for thought to be worth lying to. She lied to him about having made him. She cannot have considered them basically a toaster. Like, are we imagining that Dancer is out here lying to Pussy the Second to make herself seem smarter?

She bought FCG and restored them, and knew from that restoration that a lot of the technology behind FCG was beyond her understanding. She knew FCG could talk and reason, which is something no automaton we've ever encountered is capable of (excluding aeormatons). She spent four years with him, watching him be very very noticeably different than other automatons. She didn't need to know that he was an aeormaton or what aeormatons were historically capable of; she had all the evidence she needed to understand FCG as a person, and she just didn't.

Like, I can fully believe that she understood all that, that FCG has the capacity to think and feel on some level, and just decided that none of that made them a person. Cause that's the way FCG has thought about themself since their introduction. They think, they feel, they want things, just not how a person would. Not important, not weighty enough to matter.

And I think that matters when thinking about her! Specifically when thinking about her relationship to FCG. Dancer fucked them up! She raised them, he didn't know any other life than the one she built for him till murderbot mode. And I do think she has some responsibility for that. I don't think you can just say that she didn't know any better. She knew a lot! And she could have sought out more information on ancient automatons and their capacities. And she didn't! She knew enough to know she didn't understand FCG and how they worked, and she just. Decided not to do anything about that. She just decided that the thinking feeling robot that she bought should just be a thing that she owns and makes use of, and who cares where it came from or what it might do in the future.

I don't think she's a monster or anything, but it's wild how allergic this fandom is to considering her to have profoundly hurt the person she BOUGHT AND OWNED. Particularly given how gung ho this fandom tends to be about characters having the right to enact bloody vengeance on anyone who has ever made them feel bad.

#i know some people have argued that Dancer didn't lie #and that FCG just assumed that she made him #and Dancer just didn't tell them that they were wrong or anything for ??? reasons #but that's fucking stupid #so I'm gonna assume it's not true until told otherwise #and it will be fucking stupid if it is true #Sam didn't come up with the 'dancer didn't actually make you' twist #Matt did #and can you imagine your DM just saying 'hey guess what this character in your backstory was totally unlike how you wrote them'#'i have not re-contextualized things and added elements that put a new spin on what you thought you knew'#'i have simply decided that your character always had access to this information and just didn't ask'#every explanation that I've read for how Dancer could not be responsible in some way for FCG's worldview is just #'Have you considered that Matt might be a shitty DM?'#and i have considered that #and i don't have any problem saying that something Matt wrote is shitty #maybe he did maybe he didn't #doesn't matter to me

i will never be able to draw dazai the way i actually think he looks like not bc of lack of skill but bc it’d be sooo boring

#bc in my head he looks bland as fuck #like yes he’s attractive extremely so but in a way where it’s almost. too much???#like his face is symmetrical and his smile it’s perfect and it’s unnerving #like with celebrities they’re good looking yes but it’s inhuman almost they’re attractive but sanitized even when sexy #and there’s sth just kind of dead in his eyes when you really look so no matter how charming he is it comes across as fake and disturbing #this uncanny valley he’s not real he looks like every beauty standard to a point where it’s just soo boring #and i just can’t bring myself to draw him like this bc i enjoy messing with designs too much and i love adding little features #plus i try to make his skin a little darker but realistically i imagine hes very pale and fair #but i don’t want him to beee not him and not any of the japanese characters tbh #i’m still not super good at picking skin tones but i’ve been getting better i think #the problem is bc i use an off white background and color the skin first it looks very dark and then after i put hair color in place it #suddenly starts to look much paler and it’s really frustrating #anyway i just think thematically he should be very conventionally attractive to a point where it’s unnerving and sanitized due to #it’s restraint #does this make sense #txt.

thinking about peter cushing’s obviously deep, meticulous, and enthusiastic interest in the character of victor frankenstein as a doctor

#it’s everything. i don’t think there’s ever been another actor as meticulous as peter cushing…. i don’t think there could be now #the job of actor itself has changed. but every interview where he discusses playing the baron— every move and handling of an instrument was #studied. he joked his gp used to love it when he rang because he knew he wasn’t ill he just wanted to know how to take a brain out #he said something about if there happened to be a doctor in the audience he didn’t want them to spot him handling his scalpel etc #incorrectly— and i mean rightly so the baron is meant to be a surgeon above all surgeons after all— but that level of study and seriousness #is unparalleled i think. his approach to van helsing and sherlock holmes was very similiar— i imagine it was the same to all characters #honestly. he used to learn everyone’s lines not just his #but it brings something so unique and fascinating to hammer’s depiction of victor frankenstein. as someone who’ll probably always be a #little obsessed with the man. adding things like the janus-faced nature of the ‘bedside manner’ and the reputation of ‘the good doctor’#where they never featured in shelley’s original novel— i’m saying nothing new here but hammer’s victor has always #struck me as an extrapolation of what would happen if victor was stripped of his human limiting factors.#remorse. love. a family. mortality. and my points here are probably linked most to #the revenge of frankenstein (1958) but i think it applies in general.#but yes. i wish there were more surviving interviews of cushing discussing his relationship to ‘old frankenstein’ as he called him.#especially since surgery etc was coming on leaps and bounds at the time the films were being made— 50s > 70s is a long time in medicine #and he spoke about things like organ transplants with such fascination…. there’s a brain transplant in so many of the films of course #it does make you wonder. some things now would’ve fascinated him i think.#perhaps this is an odd thing to say but i wonder what he’d have made of transgender surgeries? i like to think he’d be deeply interested

the funny thing about drawing robits at least for me is after i got the hang of it (pain in the ass) it actually becomes more fun than drawing regular humanoid anatomy because the geometry of it is just so much more… regular and intuitive like no Weird Muscle Curvature here! just orbs and cylinders

(anyway i recently remembered that theres a guy at my school who runs a printing station where you can print (among other stuff) stickers if you provide a design so guess whats my next wip)

I don’t buy that the entire crew of Voyager would continue on in Starfleet after reaching earth, I think at least half of them quit.

#In my mind these people definitely stay: Janeway / Tom / Harry #I think B'Elanna / Seven / and Chakotay are toss ups but in my mind B'Elanna and Seven eventually do their own thing soon after #B'Elanna would be like 'Hey Seven guess who quit Starfleet again!' and Seven would be added as a party member #I truly do believe in the freelance engineer/explorer B'Elanna with very special guests lifestyle #but that's also bc I'm simply not a B'Elanna/Tom Paris shipper v_v in my canon they are just co-parents. And also Tom gets with Harry #but then Harry breaks up with him too and it's devastating for a while but Tom finds someone eventually and then Tom enters every room #with B&H in it like 'Oh look out babe - I think that's my ex!' (very loudly as a joke) and they're all pals #I don't know Chakotay well enough to determine what he'd do but I most often picture him like:#'No. Fuck that. I like Voyager's crew but Starfleet can kick rocks.' and as soon as he's pardoned for whatever crimes he just fucks off to #live a quiet life somewhere...just doing his own thing....which is totally not being a political rebel :) definitely not breaking laws :)#Tuvok semi-retires for a time to stay at home with his family and then teach but he has a long life to live and I think he'd probably #still be very connected to starfleet v_v #Tuvok says he's going to retire 'for a time' and Janeway's like 'you better not mean 60 years like the first time.'#I know EMH is doing shit but I can't help but imagine B'Elanna keeping him on her like one of those travel companion fairy characters...#not for any character-driven reason but bc it's funny #B'Elanna Seven and the EMH going on adventures...totally not helping Chakotay do anything against very dumb laws #Tom Paris & B'Elanna Torres co-parenting but not being together works well for me because of both their childhood issues #B'Elanna not being able to be with Tom as a romantic partner but NEVER abandoning their daughter & Tom being like a single father but also #a good dad to Miral which he never thought he'd get a chance to be - I just like it v_v #Oh also about the Harry breaking up wtih him thing - I think Harry definitely had a crush on Tom on Voyager but after returning to earth #they slowly realize they work better as friends and with more....options...sometimes you feel less romantically into someone #Harry: What can I say? any time i write a story where i did not entirely plan how to insert the side characters it always ends up that i just do some random thing without explaining it and just leave it there. whoops. anyways knuckles is deaf now
