I finished wild arms yesterday! what a great game

#wild arms #wild arms 1 #cecilia adlehyde #jack van burace #rudy roughnight #earth golem #art tag #i really really loved this one im so glad i finished it #its really fun and not overly long for a jrpg (about 30 hours) #also gets my seal of approval in that despite what all promotional material would have you believe cecilia is the main character #like its not even a question she just is. compounded by the fact that if you want to you can play as her the whole time #my biggest criticism would prob be that by the end of the game the party feels kind of unbalanced especially in boss fights #cecilia can do so much shit and the boys basically just do different kinds of big damage lol #cecilia can also do big damage but shes too busy healing and buffing and debuffing and all that #its not all that hard though so its not a huge deal just kind of funny #anyway i definitely want to play the rest of the series at some point. apparently theres an anime too?? exciting

it's going great!! my mind map is very big and complicated, too many ideas 🤣 i started by writing a few parts/chapters that are like more towards the middle/end, which is stupid because i obvs can't start off by posting them 😶 but i started writing on the opening chapter today and it felt really good !!!

the only issue is that like… i obvs wanna write ollie in a good way and the things i've written about him so far are like very sweet and so on. and to get inspiration about him, i rewatched old videos of him (all of the bear necessities, etc.) and read a few fics, and…. it's like i'm falling in love with him all over again 😭 like? i've always loved him, he is the reason i started watching the feeder series in the first place, but it's like my feelings have been reset and i just 🥺 i'm so soft 🥺🥺 so i only wanna write sweet things for him but that's not really the nature of the fic shdjdhdjd

#OKAY there were 2 versions of this post and i spent so long trying to decide which one to go with #and im STILL undecided on it but i went with this one primarily because of the comparison in the train scenes my beloved <3 #i'm not great at cinematic or literary analysis but i am great at going completely off the shits about things so hold on to your hats #because the train scenes in this movie drive me insane okay the way that everytime we're shown them on screen #they're accompanied by some important shifts in character dynamic or crucial introductory set ups #it's the fact that we have that first scene with alex (and josh) and nigel #and the way that both alex and the audience are being introduced to who nigel really is as a person for the first time #before then it was surface level understanding . glimpses into the character as maybe a little strange and off-putting but nothing drastic #but that scene where nigel chooses to let josh fall??? that's the first genuine insight both audience and alex get into his character #and how it will go on to shape the story #and then we have the 2nd train ride with them! and the way it's almost like the dynamic flipped from the first time #now alex is subdued and disengaged while nigel has become animated #and i know there's completely rational explanations as to why ofc alex doesn't want anything to do with nigel after josh #whereas nigel is excited to introduce alex to his 'world' and their shared history #but the little overly-obsessive voice in my head likes to think it's an allusion to the fact that these two have begun to blur #and the delineation between their personalities becomes harder and harder to define when so often they're capable of mirroring the other #and then we have the final train scene!!! which has me chewing on the walls! my gohd the reveal of it all #the realisation that alex isn't as much of an innocent victim to it all as he'd painted himself to be in his retelling #the fact that his introduction to us was on that train and so to is the conclusion to his story #that first scene of him on the train lays out the basics of his character - the rule breaker and thrill seeker #and then the end of the movie with that final scene? when you compare it to the alex we started with? that's nigel #that is nigel's ghost wearing the face of alex and you cannot change my mind #maybe i'm just thinking into it too much like am i really gonna give greg read all this credit by saying he deliberately intended #to have the train be such an important point in the film. to serve as an environmental symbol of their character progression????? for real?? #he was probably like haha trains go brrrrrh #anyway . #song rec? uhuhhhhh 'tear you apart' by she wants revenge ? #like minds #murderous intent #like minds (2006)

i have lots of thoughts about pix’s role as the “king” in pixandria!!! the pixandrians wouldnt follow the traditional king/queen/emperor/leader roles that most of the other empires do. the title of the Copper King was given to pix by the other emperors who assumed he was a king, and similar to this his crown is only worn in other empires or around other leaders as well. …exceptions occur when he forgets to take it off. pixandrians follow the vigil keeper, which is considered to be more of a priest role than that of a king, even if they have similar responsibilities. pixandria has been around for potentially thousands of years, but pix was the first vigil keeper to make the effort to have trade routes with other empires and put the empire on the main maps.

the keeper is chosen by lightning in a rare desert storm. theres no fancy ceremony, coronation, or crowning; one day the keeper is struck by lightning, leaving a lightning scar (not sure what its called but its the same thing that can happen irl) made of copper. pix was going about his day as normal when a lightning storm hit the desert, and basically he couldnt get inside fast enough, so he got struck by lightning that brought with it a ton of responsibilities. (it may or may not cause a respawn as well, but that has no change on the outcome. the person struck would still be the keeper) i dont know where his scar is yet but it might start at his hand and travel up his arm, connecting with his channeling trident when he uses it. (the electricity might cause it to glow as well!!) rain is very important in pixandria, and storms are celebrated whether or not its a lightning one. a storm where the keeper is chosen is incredibly rare and does not happen every time it rains. the new keeper will be taught by the old one until they are ready to be The keeper.

only the vigil keeper is able to light the candles on the vigil for the other emperors, as it is a big part of their role. the candles do not control respawn or death, rather they are lit to respect and honor the fact that one has died. death is not typically feared in a world with respawns, but that does not take away from the fact that its still a Death and that should be acknowledged. the candles also do not go out unless the person it is lit for permanently dies (typically of old age or injuries/disease that override respawn mechanics), in which case it can no longer be re-lit. when a player permadies, the candle is said to be the light that guides them to the afterlife; by the time the wax melts down and the candle is nothing but a stub, the dead have made their way. families light candles for their own in their homes, the vigil is only for the emperors of the continent. there is a lantern lighting ceremony every 6 months where the candles are exchanged for lanterns and they are all sent into the sky at once. a common pixandrian parting (whether in death or a simple well-wish) is “may the vigil guide you home.” - home being a home in the literal sense, or the afterlife, its up to interpretation and/or how the speaker intends it!

i havent thought of the specifics yet but because long hair is kind of impractical in the heat of the desert (i assume), a vigil keeper growing out their hair could be a symbol of status? thats not to say the general pixandrian public could not also have long hair, though, so maybe its just a personal preference. although it could be used as a story-telling detail when he exiles himself & cuts his hair short. i just like drawing long hair, honestly, but i might solidify a reason for it in the future :D
