hi i’m not really sure how to do this but i came from your uquiz and you seem knowledgeable and nice and so i’m asking you a question now i’m sorry

uhm, so, i think i maybe might be trans (ftm) because i’m super dysphoric and i sometimes look at guys and i get really jealous because they just get to, like, exist like that (i’m not really sure what the “that” is, but god, do i want it) and i very much don’t and when i refer to myself using he/him pronouns in my head it feels, uhm, at the risk of being a cliche, right, i guess.

but the thing is that i don’t really fit into any of the stereotypical trans guy things. like a lot of my friends when i was little were girls and though i have some stereotypically masculine hobbies (sports and physics) i also sew, and when i was little i was obsessed with being a princess for like a month before i started refusing to wear dresses.

i don’t think i’m non-binary, i tried using they/them pronouns this summer and while they didn’t actively hurt like she does, they didn’t really feel right.

so, like, am i lying to myself? i don’t know, maybe i just want to be special (i don’t want it, though, if i could just be happy as a girl i would).

howdy anon! dw i am always glad to answer questions abt this stuff even tho it make take me a while lol

my best advice for situations like this is i know its easy but don't let yourself get caught up in the trap of "well this is the label that makes me feel best but i dont technically check off every single box for it so am i just lying?" people arent video game quests, you dont have to hit every single box for it to count, youre allowed to have stuff fall outside the technical definition of a term while still calling yourself it. im very similar to you, i was in tap and ballet growing up, wore dresses and makeup for most of highschool, sewing crocheting knitting the whole shebang. but the important part is that none of those things make a difference to your identity. knowing how to sew doesnt make you a girl, it can just make you a guy who knows how to sew. its a thing you do, not who you are.

all that being said, i think another helpful angle to look at things is "does the distinction between two similar labels actually make a difference to me?" using myself as an example again, i dont call myself a trans man because while i do prefer presenting masculine, for some reason the term 'man' just doesnt feel right for me. but at the same time, to the rest of the world that's functionally what i am, right? so does that change /who/ i am? no. so for me personally, ive deliberately chosen not to file myself into either "trans man" or "nonbinary" and just move on with my day, because to me it doesnt actually make a difference which one i am, im still gonna stay on t, i still want top surgery, i still want to be perceived masculine, and thats not gonna change no matter what name is on the box so who gives a shit. just do what makes you happy

#also this is a side note but going back to the whole 'when i was growing up i was more feminine' angle #one thing ive found is that the more masc i get the more pressing the Need To Be Masculine becomes #so like. accepting that identities can be fluid and change over time can be very helpful imo #maybe i was a girl at one point and now im not‚ or maybe i never was‚ who cares. either way‚ im not one now‚ and thats what matters #gender is a game we were all forced to play from birth‚ youre allowed to say fuck all these rules im just gonna exist how i want #i hope this all makes sense and isnt an incoherent ramble labflsbfksbfkeb ive been having brain fog lately so i tend #to lose track of where i am when im talking sometimes #i dont think youre lying to yourself‚ i think introspection and understanding your identity are very difficult things to do #and i think like a lot of trans(?) people pre-everything youre scared that the answer will be 'yes‚ you are trans‚ and now you have to #figure out how to live in a way that feels right'#not to say nonbinary people dont have to deal w the same stuff as trans ppl obv bc Hello Thats Me ksnfkshfkek #but like. i feel like most ppl see it as 'figure out identity then work on transition goals' but like you absolutely dont have to #you can just say 'idk what i am but i know doing xyz will make me happier' and just go from there #and who knows! maybe doing so will change your understanding of yourself to the point you find picking a label far easier #or maybe it wont! you wont know till you try though #anyways hope this ramble helps have a good day osbfksbflsnls

i just finished live action avatar the last airbender. buckle up. obv spoilers incoming.

honestly just gonna list the good and the bad and give a number rating at the end. this will be long. also THIS IS JUST MY OPINION!!!! nothing i say is right or wrong. dont hurt me.

the good

sokka (ik this is controversial bc of his actor okokokok im js purely from a performance standpoint he ate)

zuko (absolutely devoured)

fight scenes!!!! obv not as good as the animated (we knew this) but i still enjoyed

zhao!!!!!! do not sleep on him he killed this!!

KIYOSHI!!! ARE U KIDDINGGG

overall loved the focus on avatars other than roku

suki/suki and sokka

attack on the air nomads… ik it was unnecessary and a little hard to watch but still was v interesting

azulaaaaa and the fact that we see her this season. LOVE this addition. also the way they added her was veryyyyy well done. didnt feel forced.

bumi/how they handled the bumi arc in general. some parts i actually like better than the og. like how aang knew he was bumi right away. makes way more sense to me.

sokka and katara has some very sweet and genuine moments

aang and gyatso reunion awwww

omg. the “twist” with the 41st division that zuko accidentally saved becoming his crew. the bestttttt change that they made. i loved this. something so small but felt SO impactful.

yue/sokka and yue. this is a BIG one bc i think the original show really lacks with how they wrote yue and especially her relationship with sokka. i think it was a lot better here.

when zhao admits at the end he was working w azula and that ozai was just using zuko to motivate azula. omg. that was such a cool thing they added

and now. the bad.

aang. JDHSKSJDJ SORRYYYY dont care! he got better as the show went on. overall acting wasnt great and the writing for him definitely did not help

katara OOPSIES HEHEHE sorry but again same thing. kind of a dull performance. where is her PASSION?!?! wanted to like her so bad bc katara is my girl and this girl was giving katara on paper but the performance was just kinda bleh. didnt hate but DEFINITELY did not love.

costumes. dying on this hill i do not care. it was giving spirit of halloween. and some of these wigs…. yue’s wig? azula’s fuck ass pieces hanging out? HOW MAI AND TY LEE LOOKED IN GENERAL?! ouch

^in general mai and ty lee did not need to be here at ALLLLL. def shouldve waited till s2 for their appearances.

where is the silliness? where is the humor? hardly tried to embody the fun spirit of the original and when it did it failed miserably.

first ep was by far the worst imo. how sokka and katara came across/met aang? WOW what a let down holy shit.

they should’ve kept it as aang running away from the southern air temple. not that he went for a late night drive with appa. dont care that this is a small thing. it is a HUGE part of aang’s character.

idk how to word this one and i think ppl would disagree anyways. but they are making iroh too obviously “good”. ykw i mean? when we first meet him, we know he’s not like the rest of the fire nation but we still don’t truly know where his morals lie. this show made it too obvious too soon.

why did katara never train w pakku?? that makes 0 sense. i understand she was mostly self taught throughout s1. but the whole thing was that: yes, katara was good before pakku, but when she finally did get a master, she became EXPONENTIALLY better and really came into her own. i am not buying that she becomes the master katara we know and love without learning from pakku. so unrealistic. when zuko says “u found a master” and she said “yes ur looking at her”. oh girlboss feminism u are going to HELL!

would like to take a moment to say^^^ i am a feminist ok. do nottttt get it twisted. but girlboss feminism is brainrot.

aang. did not bend. a single drop of water. are u fucking KIDDING ME? that was nuts.

really felt like if u did not watch the original series, this show would feel SO all over the place and u would have so many “wtf is happening” moments. the whole omashu shit was kind offfffff a mess. i see where they were going and why they were doing that but in hindsight after the fact i was like… if i knew nothing ab this show that would have been the most confusing clusterfuck.

and i think my biggest/most general complaint that i already talked about that i will briefly touch on: trying to do too much. why are we putting in characters and plot points that do not come till seasons 2-3 and are completely unnecessary now (secret tunnel, wan shi tong, swamp-kinda episode, etc.)

final thoughts?

it was enjoyable. i cannot deny that. landscapes were gorgeous. fights were well choreographed and looked GOOD. some changes were genuinely made for the better, and even changes that i do not necessarily think were better, i could respect the creativity of some changes and understood why they were there. but overall, as most live action remakes go, this was a flat portrayal of one of the greatest pieces of fiction of all time that suffered from some overly ambitious ideas and dull writing with little to no sense of whimsy. while some performances exceeded expectations, others that were crucial to the integrity of this show really disappointed me.

overall: 6.6/10. this number is completely subject to change.

almost every week a new OP chapter comes out and i just have to (more thoughts under the cut bc spoilers and AGGHHH I HAVE TOO MANY FEELINGS)

im legit wondering how like..... Real the idea of Kuma being a tyrant is - both as a pirate and as a king. bc like ... we know tht the World Government has a history of rewriting and outright deleting pieces of history, but at the same time, we're getting this from Jimbei, who has no reason to lie, and presumably he actually Did know Kuma. but also this makes me wonder abt what he was doing for the Revolutionary Army too?? bc the Revolutionary Army clearly cares about him a Lot, and Bonney obvs would too bc that's her DAD!!! so if he was really that horrible ... hmmmmmmmmmm..........

also i keep thinking abt the whole thing ppl r saying about Kizarau getting involved because of the gloves that Atlas(?) had that could actually touch and affect light ..... its making me think that the combined chaos of the Straw Hats + Bonney + CP0 + Vegapunk's bodies will force a Buster Call or Sakazuki's hand that Kizaru gets sent ..... also the whole thing w the beam/light sword too???? LIKE .... TELL ME KIZARU IS GONNA BE IMPORTANT IM BEGGING!!!

also speaking of Sakazuki ... i love how much more frustrated he's getting w his job. i love it so much. being Fleet Admiral isn't all it's cut out to be, bitch!!!!! in all seriousness though, it's making me wonder where he'll be going from here, because he so obviously hates that he's forced to sit on his ass and that he can't just go out there and Do Things. he's very much the like "I Need To Be On The Field" type of guy and he wants to get shit done, and as much as i don't really like him as a person (funny bc he's not real but yknow what i mean) the direction he's sort of going is so interesting. he's being kept from doing his job and actually seeing more of the horrible underbelly of what the Marines do - as in, he's beginning to see how the Marines really Are the lapdogs of the WG + Celestial Dragons. so much of his character has been about upholding Absolute Justice no matter the cost or sacrifice, going so far as killing innocent people for it, but he can't uphold Absolute Justice if the WG + Celestial Dragons get in the way. ITS JUST INTERESTING IDK!!!

hey sydney! i'm looking into teaching english in japan after i finish my degree in a year or so and i was wondering how tricky you think it is to live in japan if you don't speak or read japanese? i know that obvs you do speak japanese but do you think its doable to live there with only a beginner level of japanese / learn while im there? thank uuuu

hmmm it really depends!!!! i have friends here who came as english teachers knowing no japanese and picked up a ton of it and are doing great now and are super fluent actually!!!!! and i also know ppl who came as english teachers who learned no japanese in 5+ years and cant rly do anything for themselves and need to bring along a japanese speaking friend to go to the bank lol. you definitely CAN do it but its gonna depend on 1. how motivated you are to actually learn 2. how much aptitude you have naturally for picking up languages!!!!!! if one or both is high i think youll be ok :) i know some teaching programs like JET basically hold ur hand so u dont need any japanese at all really and ull still be fine. others apparently dont so consider that too :(

another thing is japan is really not great as a country at accommodating english speakers, like i think a lot of europe is for example. if ur in tokyo ull probably be fine but if ur outside of a major city the onus will be on u to find a way to communicate in japanese. but!!! japanese ppl are super nice about that and will be ECSTATIC that ur even trying!!!! theyll meet u way more than halfway so ull never have to worry about embarrassing urself while ur still learning; ull get constant positive feedback from basically everyone :,) its cute!!!

ive never been a teacher so i cant comment on how work life will be without japanese ability, but the companies that hire u def dont expect u to know any when u arrive so im sure its ok? and ive also never lived in japan without some command of the language so i can only go off of my observations and things friends have told me about their experiences. but honestly my opinion is: do it!!!! yeah youll be uncomfortable sometimes, yeah youll struggle and feel embarrassed if you mess up, but hey you get to live in japan!!!! and what better place to be forced to get good at japanese rly fast??? LOL but if u can fit even a single japanese class into ur schedule before u graduate doooo itttt. having even basic hiragana command will help u so much when u have to read signs and station names and stuff

#U SHOULD DO IT THO!!! its one of those things u can only do when ur young #millions of foreigners live here and dont speak any japanese and make it by juuust fine so u will too!!!#also a lot of them are rly dumb and ur clearly not LOL ull be fiiiine #mail time!

Okay so I have just finished reading the last chapter that u just uploaded and if u dont mind im gonna rant about It .

First of all Remus and Sirius being paired Up was soo unexpected but im totally here for It . And the pure silence is seriously making me suffer I totally understand why Sirius was being dramatic cause i cant handle awkward silence , It will be the death of me i swear.

Secondly I loved the dorcas and Sirius interactions , well the whole slytherin skittles dynamic tbh .

And the way that Sirius and James hate each other more than Remus and Sirius ...

Thats soo weird and different but for some reason I really like It and am pretty interested in seeing more interactions between them .

Welpp thats all , to lazy to write more .

thanks for reading dearest!!!!! i do not mind at ALL nothing is more fun than ppl talking to me abt my own self-induced brainrot, so rant away (as i’m now going to)!!!!!

it’s shocking to me it was a surprising turn of events. but then again it was one of the first things i KNEW was going to happen in this fic when i came up with the idea over two months ago, so it’s been rattling around my brain for a while. a lot of this fic is going to be based around those prefect rounds, which i am so thrilled to have play out.

and YES, the awkward looks and silences are everything to me!!! for me high school drama was a lot of just,,, i don’t want to talk to you,,, so i’m gonna sit here in bitter silence,,,, and it will be so fuckin weird,,,, and i love forcing that onto sirius and rem (and all of you) bc ugh. it truly is PAINFUL.

cas and sirius have become one of my favourite dynamics so unexpectedly, but i actually adore them with my whole soul - writing them is so easy and fun.

same with all our skittles. rejoining the marauders fandom after years of absence as i did, the concept of the skittles is something i’ve been discovering slowly (as it fully was not around when i was) and i was in no way expecting to write something so them-centric, but i’m enjoying how my characterisations are turning out (even if they’re a bit different from fanon)!!!!

good god i have so much to say abt sirius, james and remus in this fic. at the end of the day i’m going for this kind of mirror to fanon/canon where sirius and james are THE relationship (obvs they hate each other rn, but it is still a defining duo) and remus feels kind of on the outs as a result, seeing himself as something seperate and perhaps less of a priority as a result.

i could write a whole character study on james just for this fic. one of my main writing considerations is a sirius without a james who has shown him unconditional love. sirius in gryffindor is so different bc of JAMES, the first person to love him so overtly. when he doesn’t have that (even in his skittles in this fic, not in a way that isn’t attached to his family identity (at least in his own mind)), where does that leave sirius? bc then it also means, how do james and sirius develop a relationship when it doesn’t start with a foundation of ‘i chose you as my best mate in yr 1’, yk??? they hate each other already, where do they go from there in the future??? just. ugh. platonic prongsfoot. kills me every fucking time.

cannot wait for the next one as well, she’s a big one!!!! i’ll tell you that.

Thoughts on Nanami wanting to take care of his s/o

You'd be dating and u would still be working bc you gotta pay for an apartment and shit but you're obvs miserable bc its fucking retail and it's awful sksksk

I bet you $20 that Nanami offers to help you out like buying you groceries and shit but you're always like no! I will not take your money!! 😡 just v stubborn and aggressive sksksk

He would keep offering and you'd keep refusing and at some point he's like "why don't you just move in with me and then you don't have to work" WHICH??? IS A BIT TOO FORWARD HUN! YES WE ARE DATING BUT I HAVE A SYSTEM IN PLACE, I CANT JUST PICK EVERYTHING UP AND MOVE IN WITH YOU

But then you have a shitty day and you end up crying at work

Nanami comes to pick you up and take you home (like he always does) and sees that your eyes are puffy and red and that's the final straw for him

He's like "ok that's it you're gonna move in with me and im gonna take care of you"

And of course you argue bc you don't want to feel like you're leeching off of him but he insists and suddenly there's a moving company at your door and you're like 🙃 ok ig we're doing this

So yall start living together and its nice and all but you feel bad bc you're not working anymore and you're just moping around the apartment all day trying to find things to do

And you try to get a new job but Nanami won't let you

"Darling, there's no need to worry. I make more than enough money for the both of us."

He'll bring up his bank account to try and calm your worries and you take a look and you're like 😳 "o-ok i believe you now"

Let's be real: Nanami wants a pretty little trophy/house"wife" and he wants nothing more than to take care of his spouse

It all comes back to acts of service and the need to be useful to ppl

Like if he can't make you happy or satisfied, he won't know what to do with himself

So what's he do?? He takes care of you financially bc it's easy for him to do and he enjoys the results

He likes coming home to you waiting for him 🥺

He loves buying clothes, shoes, accessories for you

He loves sending you to the salon and seeing the results of your pampering

Tbh if he wasn't such an empathetic guy, you'd probably think that he was doing all these things bc he wanted to change you and mold you into his ideal partner

But the reality is he just wants to make you happy and the best way to do that is by treating you like royalty

Of course if you hate those things, he won't force them on you, but he can't deny that he'd love to see his sweet little wife show off her new outfit and smile brightly as she talked about getting her nails done that day

He's just big on pampering and money makes it easier for him to do that

Haha was waiting for this one actually. Can’t believe I can’t use love story grr. but yeah i get it. though plsss gimmie the chance to add a little bit of love story? I just love that song yknow. And jfc when I say ‘love’ it doesn’t always mean the romantic kind, aight? N e wayyys lesgo !

Love story. Pretty self explanatory actually. ‘We were both young when I first saw you’ I feel that him being a hopeless romantic started pretty young. He was young dumb but in love and that’s basically how he is when he’s in love. He loves the feeling when he first falls in love, when a love is still young. You don’t really know what you’re doing but you still act like you are because you can’t help it. Romeo mostly embrace the the whole being young and in love just because he loves the feeling and believes that PDA isn’t as bad as ppl might think. Well, not entirely but just enough yknow.

Invisible String. The song is basically the soulmate trope in a song form. And he does believes in soulmates. Let me crack into the... angsty stuff heheh >:). He has a long history of loving himself and sometimes doubt that there are ppl out there that would actually like him yknow. So he pretends there’s like this invisible string that connects him to others. Like destined to meet these few certain ppl. That’s what has kept him afloat all this time. Not many ppl would know it but it’s the truth.

Wonderland. ‘Didn't they tell us don't rush into things?’ and also ‘We found Wonderland, you and I got lost in it’ Now this one is more towards his mentality in stuff. Sometimes when he’s clouded with love (romance or otherwise, take your pick) he gets too easily excited like ‘woah!!! someone likes me!!!’ and goes a bit too quickly. Many ppl were scared off by how clingy this kid can get. Romeo has learned to calm himself yknow, but sometimes he gets too lost and forgets all about it. The second one is mostly because, in plain simple words, he thinks the world is full of shit. His mental health has been hit hard and some days just seem so plain and boring and he’s tired and he didn’t even know why he got up that morning. Sometimes he closes his eyes to pretend he’s somewhere he wants to be. Where he’s wanted and it’s acceptable to cling on ppl. Where he’s not tired and the world around him is in fact wonderful to be in.

Blank Space. Some ppl will describe him of having an endless list of ppl he was once associated with. Call it lovers, friends, whatever. Mostly they get scared bcs the more time they spent with Romeo, more of his true colors are being shown. Some impressions Romeo left them was ‘annoying’ ‘clingy’ and ‘too serious in stuff’. It’s only because Romeo just wants to find a connection. He likes stuff with meaning behind it. Not those meaningless relationships or small talk. He wants to find someone to give his all. Obv these ppl has shown him that when Romeo is proper and polite, just like the way he usually presents himself towards strangers, they like him but not when he’s being his passionate self and so they don’t deserve his heart. ‘Got a long list of ex-lovers, they'll tell you I'm insane’ Lots of ppl misunderstands his passionate self as ‘crazy’. But that’s just how he feels his feelings. Whether he’s sad, happy, or angry. It’s all because he has all this passionate energy to use up. Now here’s the kicker: he doesn’t give up to find that connection. He knows he’ll most likely get his heart broken again but he’s resilient.

Lover. Yes, yes, we’ve made it perfectly clear that he’s a hopeless romantic. But this song specifically resonates with him. ‘Have I known you 20 seconds or 20 years?’ Romeo never half asses anything when it comes to getting to know others. He will go out of his way to listen to your laughter and sorrows because he loves the human personality. He thinks it’s so complex and amazing. Sometimes in one conversation he can really get a lot of information from someone. ‘With every guitar string scar on my hand, I take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover’ After all that disappointment he is still determined to love. Like I said before he’s resilient when it comes to these things. ‘Can I go where you go? Can we always be this close forever and ever?’ Once you got his love he will stick with you forever. This might be in a way calling him clingy and maybe he is. But that’s just how he shows his loyalty towards someone. And the rest of the song is basically what it’s like for Romeo to be in love and to be loved by Romeo. Beautiful and at peace, like you’re floating on clouds and everything in the world doesn’t matter anymore.

...Ready For It. Haha yes this sounds like a stretch but bare with me. ‘But if he’s a ghost, then I can be a phantom. Holding him for ransom, some’ I feel that despite the ‘bad impression’ he’s given ppl that left him, he did left some form a good mark on them too. Some have tried to insert themselves back in his life, realizing that maybe Romeo isn’t as bad as they thought he was. Of course, there are others that don't, which is always fine for Romeo’s end because he does understand that he’s ‘not for everyone’. ‘In the middle of the night, in my dreams. You should see the things we do, baby’ Despite his openness to love anyone, he does have his own standards. A vivid version of the kind of ppl he would like to share his heart with but he doesn’t over stretch himself to get them to like him other than maybe the usual meeting a person for the first time.

Don’t Blame Me. ‘Don't blame me, love made me crazy. If it doesn't, you ain't doin' it right’ Let me tell you that when it comes to forming a connection/relationship, it really brings out Romeo’s true colors. And I’ve said before that that’s when ppl start leaving him bcs he doesn’t like his passion being executed in a lot of aspects of his other personality. He’s considered ‘crazy’ for that. ‘Lord, save me, my drug is my baby, I'd be using for the rest of my life’ But when it comes to connecting to the right ppl, he will shine and thrive. Maybe he’ll use this opportunity to finally be himself without fearing that these ppl will leave his as well. ‘For you, I would cross the line’ and then there’s the priceless loyalty towards those ppl that I've mentioned. Yeah, Romeo will do anything for the ppl he loves.

This Is Me Trying. It’s how I think Romeo in his low would look. I’ve mentioned before that his mental health sometimes hits very low that he can barely do anything. It looks more like everything that he does is so tiring and all he can do is just stay in bed. He wants someone to know that he’s trying his best to get up just to brush his teeth or get some food. He wants someone to know that he’s trying his best. As much as he wants to, he can’t get through a day like that all alone. He needs someone else to be the one telling him to do things because days like these are usually when Romeo can’t bare to listen to himself. A simple ‘I’m proud of you’ from someone else can be enough to get him to other things that seems difficult. But hey, he’s trying.

To quickly sum it up: Love story is how he views love to be (young, beautiful, yet stupid in the same way) and he proudly embraces it. Invisible String is how he believes in soulmates to cope with the disappointment he faces from ppl that don’t like his true colors. Wonderland is how he tends to get over excited when it comes to ppl that show any form of attention towards him that can be viewed as affection plus how he likes to pretend to be in a world where it’s okay for him to be clingy. Blank Space is how his passionate soul somehow turns him into a crazy person that can’t make a connection with others last. Lover is for how he feels/looks when Romeo does love. ...Ready For It is for how he leaves different kinds of marks on the people he had once connected in the past. Don’t Blame Me is for how the people he wants to connect to brings out his true colors and how he will thrive when the person he connects with is the right one. This Is Me Trying is how Romeo looks like when he’s in his lowest moment and needs someone to support him.

ok well since im Thinking about it now lemme just make a huge ass masterpost of my tmavrai au bc im stupid lmao (also i wanna get into using this blog for more than art since this is my main)

buckle up cowboys this is gonna be lengthy

ok so to start off, it’s a kind of fusion au. some tma characters are replaced with hlvrai characters, and some just exist on their own. for example, elias is replaced with gman, but jon and gordon both coexist together

speaking of jon and gordon, they’re both eye avatars and co-archivists of the magnus archives. gman fucked up a little bit while filing shit but its fine, its fine. they’re both fit for the job.

tommy, darnold, and coomer work at the institute in various departments, along with tim, martin, and barney. tim and tommy have been best friends for years and live together as roommates, and darnold’s another one of their closest friends. coomer and martin just chill there, and barney likes to talk to gordon a lot. tommy brings sunkist over a lot, who everyone loves

since his dad is basically the head avatar of the eye, tommy asked him one time how to make a dog and gman, because that’s his little boy, told him how. now there’s an immortal entity soup dog that’s way too big to be normal. but that just means she has more love in her :)

jon and gordon kinda tolerate each other at first, being forced to record in the same area, but they tend to... tune into each other a lot. they sometimes read statements in unison, even if one of them isn’t looking at the statement. they take turns speaking in dialogue parts if need be, and they dont really notice it.

eventually prentiss attacks and gordon notices something... off about their coworker benrey. wait- wasn’t his name barney? no, he was probably remembering wrong. but something about benrey is just... weird. he cant put his finger on it, and jon has no input.

so yea benrey is a not-them and a stranger entity, and they just kinda chill in the archives and check ppls passports at the door. its also pretty fun harrassing feetman, especially when they can just pop in and out of michael’s doors bc they’re friends with the spiral. unknowing goes well, as you can assume ;w;

after they find gertrude’s body in the tunnels, several cops get called in. basira and daisy come over, supplying jon with tapes, but daisy brings her old high school/college friend forzen, who’s in the military. and yea they’re both hunt avatars. it was simple and obvious don’t blame me. he hunts ppl down by having beyblade competitions then shooting them. standard stuff.

tommy had gotten claimed by the slaughter years back, but now its really starting to take effect. coomer, local end avatar, isn’t much help, as he doesn’t exactly view death as a problematic thing and even compliments tommy on his kills. during jon and gordon’s comas, forzen goes rogue (instead of burying himself like daisy) and tommy goes after him, trying to mercy kill any victims he has his sights set on. its a body count contest at that point

bubby takes the place of agnes montegue, but still alive and not as hostile to the main cast. obv bc coomer’s there and i love me some gay grampas. yea bubby’s kinda forsaking his desolation cult thing but he’s fine. he just goes and chills at the archives a lot to get with coomer

after the unknowing, things go to shit. martin and benrey close themselves off, both allying themselves with peter lukas, to defend the institute and its workers. tommy and darnold are heartbroken after tim’s death, and tommy, unable to deal with living alone without tim or living in his dad’s house (who’s in prison now), moves in with darnold. its angst central babeyyy

darnold, basira, alyx, georgie, and melanie start a group chat called “babysitting the avatars squad” since they’re the only humans left allied to the institute or its workers. they vent about shit their avatars do bc good lord they can do some weird shit sometimes. oh also alyx and georgie are cousins here bc i feel like its funny that both gordon’s and jon’s childhood friends are related and no one knew dfgshgfgsfghgfrsbfsxg

for the last thing im gonna cover bc im tired and i dont want to type anymore is that joshua definitely exists and oh boy it gets fun in the apocalypse. he runs around and plays around with all the domains with tommy and benrey and the other three are way too tired to deal with this. he just wants to give daddy a flower! ignore the eyeball, it’s just a normal flower! how... sweet.

i have a lot of trouble writing benrey in my fics— how did you experiment with his characterization until you were satisfied with it, and what other benny interpretations do u enjoy from other fic writers? i love the way you write him, his dialogue feels so authentic and believable.

AW thank u......it always makes my day to hear something nice about the way i characterize ppl......there were a lot of things i did to try to nail how he talks and thinks. thank u for asking this b/c i have a Lot to say about this subject

the first thing is, obv, watching the series. i have to include this one b/c i feel like quite a few ppl in this fandom.....like.....havent. there is a certain way of characterizing him as an Epic Mischievous Gamer that is, uhhh, very much a fanon thing that ppl see on tumblr and imitate and flanderize all to hell. but, like, im an obsessive little weirdo who will rewatch things over and over again to take notes on characters’ behavior and dialogue and i really gotta recommend just sitting back and listening to how benrey talks.

hes not dropping gamer references constantly. hes not making every single sentence out of his mouth some obnoxious quip. hes slow on the uptake and drops conversations entirely if he doesnt care about them. he has never once said “cringe” before and whenever i see a fic that has him doing it multiple times i feel minutes shaved off of my lifespan. the #1 tip i can give here is to not have benrey talking in fucking 2010s gamer lingo every time he opens his mouth. please

(i feel partially responsible for the spread of this kind of characterization. my first 2 fics have him doing stuff like that every once in awhile. sometimes i debate going back and changing them, but like, benrey saying “poggers” one time aside, i think they hold up pretty good. so i havent. something something historical accuracy)

the more i wrote about him, the more i tried digging into the aspects of his character that i found the most appealing. some people are really into his polite side. i am really into his bullying side. so i would watch the bits where benrey really has his “gordon bullying” mode cranked up to 11 and make note of how he acts, how he talks. trying to replicate it. “benrey saying epic random shit to piss gordon off” is much less his vibe than, like, demeaning gordon, and i feel like the bathroom skit is the ultimate manifestation of this. it is genuinely my favorite bit in the whole series b/c its so ideally representative of their weird-ass dynamic. this fuckin high school bullying LARP in the middle of a public restroom. god in heaven

the less you lean on the crutches of “gamer lingo” and “wacky non-sequitur”, the more it forces you to think about how he behaves. what motivates him. and generally, like, he operates on his own wavelength. he doesnt fully understand everything thats going on around him and selectively chooses what he tunes into. and, most importantly, he just wants to play games, man. benrey likes goofing off with the science crew and playing mind games with gordon. he fails to understand the gravity of his actions a lot of the time b/c hes not human, and hes not operating under the same social guidelines.

(this is the part where people like to speculate exactly what kind of non-human he is, and i think this can be helpful for setting up his motivations! me, personally, i am of the opinion that hes just a video game guy made real. kind of like a live-action cartoon character. so hes operating on video game logic a lot of the time, and doesnt grasp that consequences for actions are different for normal people who cant noclip or respawn. a kind of lack of empathy that manifests in him being capricious, indifferent, detached......purely oriented around “getting his job done” and “chilling” and, naturally, “fucking with gordon freeman“.)

ultimately it boils down to distilling just what i like out of their interactions and trying to Manifest it repeatedly. i go crazy about their actual canon interactions and i want to write things that hit the notes i like: two guys who are mutually kind of obsessed with one another, for better or worse, and engage in a lot of play fighting (and, you know, genuine fighting, too) as a sublimation of it. best frenemies, if you will.

i think that a lot of the problems people have in writing benrey is that they kinda just project whatever attributes they want in a lover onto him. like, man, i like cute shit as much as the next guy, but do you really think that the dude who bullies gordon freeman while hes having a panic attack is gonna tenderly stroke gordons hair and wipe his tears and tell him that everythings gonna be okay? no, dude. even when benrey expresses any kind of concern, he does it in a way that communicates that he doesnt understand the gravity of whats going on and he doesnt “get” why gordons lying on the ground yelling, or why gordons howling in pain after getting his arm cut off. he is not an empathetic guy. hes actually kind of a creep!!! a lil freakjob! the weirdness and the lack of humanity are what make him hot!!!!

and this is what makes it own so hard on the rare occasions he does show empathy! its the same reason why its so cute when gordon stops bitching for 0.5 seconds and tries to be nice! theyre earned moments, not character defaults. and cutesy/lovey-dovey shit with these two is definitely doable, but i would love to see more of it take into account the fact that these are two dudes who fucking suck and who especially suck at being emotionally open with each other.

as far as characterizations that i really like........okay. full disclosure. the biggest reason ive been losing my shit over the catmaid freemind fic is b/c the author is one of the few people who really taps in to what i like about benrey, and what i like about his relationship with gordon. hes teasing. he likes to use his perceived authority to bully people. hes weirdly protective of gordon. but hes also just, like, a chill dude who wants to play video games. and he legit likes gordon and expresses affection for him in some of the most in-character ways ive ever seen

like. deliberately spilling milk on the couch and flatly going like “oops.” b/c he wants gordon to sleep in his room......playing nurse by doing fuck-all apart from giving gordon powerade while hes sick and keeping the volume on his video games low......kicking barmey under the table for making fun of gordon being dogboyed.......it is all exceptionally cute shit and its delightfully in-character. i feel so bad for the author b/c im a frenrey head and i am primarily reading it for those two. but god they do it so well.......im hooked. im obsessed

I read about you Xicheng post and like obv not liking / engaging it with it is extremely valid and I agree that there's nothing there in the text whatsoever lmao. Feel free to delete or not answer to this btw I don’t know if your post was a more of an “I wonder how this happens” or “I don’t ever want to know why ppl ship this” I am acting like it’s the former but if it’s not just like. Send this to the trash no offense taken.

This isn't really my only ship or whatever but why I engaged with the concept in the first place is more like. Hey those are two ppl who are on equal footing at the end of the book (in terms of like competency / position etc) and are obviously both in a really bad place for different reasons, I wonder how they could improve / if a relationship btw them would improve things. i think part of this is how they have a very different personality an I think both of them could take a page from the other's book in terms of like. Dealing with emotions and how to express them. Idk like not even necessarily a couple or anything it's like i wonder if a friendship would do the characters any good and I like seeing different ppl's takes on how that would play out.

upfront i just wanna say thanks for your... i guess maturity in this message, it's so much more respectful than the way people usually send stuff like 'weh you dont like my ship well then fuck you'

i guess i can sort of vaguely understand why people might like the ship? but only in the novel where lxc is not that much older than wwx and jc and is also not a sect leader yet during the lectures arc (bc lbr in cql it's implied that lxc is quite a bit older and more experienced and him already being sect leader means there's a power imbalance there that i find extremely uncomfortable). like theyre two very different people but what happens to them is similar, theyre suddenly orphaned during the war and forced to lead a sect at a very young age. personally i think it's more interesting to just treat them as narrative foils tho

ultimately i can't recall one scene where they talk to each other and they just seem so incompatible. and like, age difference/power imbalance in cql aside, i just dont get the appeal. and im gonna be real here, it feels like a ship that people came up with just to pair everyone up because they need to ship every major character

Thank you for asking! I don't really think of myself as especially good at making friends, I'm just comfortable talking to strangers. In hindsight I think I usually make friends by like. Finding a group of people centered around a common interest or circumstance, and then noticing what people from that group I end up getting into long conversations about wildly unrelated things with. It's not actually about the common ground, that's just how you meet people--from there, you might end up going on a lot of tangents with people you get on well with and then start getting to know them better in other contexts too.

If you're not feeling talkative enough for that, or are very good at Staying On Topic, it's ok to just try to make friends with random acquaintances or with friends of people you already know.

I think the biggest thing to do when making friends is that if you meet someone you think is interesting, you just gotta keep talking with em every few days/weeks and stay socially engaged with them (until either you feel like friends, you stop having anything to talk about, or you find out this whole time they were actually like, super shitty people, because obvs this happens sometimes when you meet new folks :c ). Being friends, or laying the groundwork for other kinds of relationship, usually needs a lot of engagement and sharing, so you can get to know each other. Like, ask them a lot of questions about their hobbies and what they're up to and stuff (about things you genuinely want to know! people like to share, but don't force yourself to hear out stuff that bores you or things'll get uncomfortable down the line at best), find out their interests and see if they line up with yours (if not, learning opportunity, if so, great chance to talk about things you both love), and offer opportunities for them to learn about you, too.

If they don't ask often, you can volunteer anecdotes or updates on how you're doing, like say shit like "I just had to drive an extra 40 mile round trip to a specialty grocery store to get that ONE hot sauce I like haha, what did you do today?" or "i got a huge headache this morning and my day was super boring, what about you?", like present information about yourself as part of a broader conversation starter and then see if you can get a back-and-forth going.

If something you see reminds u of them, you can let em know (it's not as weird as all that), and if you're randomly thinking about em in the middle of the day, that's a good signal to go check in and see how they're doing or if they wanna talk. Like, people worry about seeming clingy or flirtatious I think? But if you're just talking you're just talking, and you can usually trust them to recognize that too :D

Not everyone is gonna be super talkative and sometimes this just means they're quiet but friendly and need more nudging, and sometimes it means they're not that interested. Unfortunately you always have to puzzle that one out yourself. And of course sometimes you end up talking casually to someone for a while and then realizing you don't really care and don't want to hear from them more. When this happens it's usually ok to just talk to them less, but it feels weird and can make you kinda guilty. Just remind yourself you're not obligated to be friends with people just because you got to know them (but if you find yourself withdrawing Too much and feeling lonely, it might be a good idea to push yourself to talk to ppl you're so-so about but don't dislike, and see if you like them better when you talk about other stuff, or try doing activities with em cause maybe you just need something to focus on together).

Don't be afraid to try to talk to people after like a long time passes. I know it can feel weird especially if you were the one who stopped contact first, but it's usually pretty fun to catch up with someone you haven't talked to in a while.

It can be hard to tell who likes you vs who's just a good conversationalist. If they're reaching out to you unprompted in the same ways you're reaching out to them, that's a good sign. If they're not, it's ok to scale back engagement to match their energy, instead of putting a ton of work into somebody who's not really that interested. Some ppl just don't show affection as well as you'll be trying to, tho, or are harder to read in general. So it's ok if you choose to work a little harder to keep up with a friend who's not that sociable. Just be sure if you're doing it that you're *aware* of the extra work you're doing--don't push yourself into exhaustion or start letting yourself feel like you don't actually need/deserve ppls appreciation in general. You always have the OPTION to go the extra mile to befriend somebody; you should NEVER feel like it's obligatory.

Also, if you know a lot of people it gets harder to tell who you're friends with vs who you're just on good terms with. Sometimes it can also feel like you're overwhelmed by the sheer volume of people you know who you kind of want to talk to and need to remember to reach out to soon. I can't really help with that, I think that's just how it is when you know a lot of people in a stressful, busy world.
