Not to dampen the mood, but I'm struggling with depression today . How do you cope with a depressive episode?

This is likely to be a long ass rant, so apologies in advance for what is below the cut, lmao. This is, as sad as it seems, my one area of expertise since i'm depressed 24/7. So... yeah.

some depressive episodes are worse than others and some days are harder than others, so i guess determine what kinda day you're having? Sounds dumb but like on really difficult days, when im not able to do jackshit, if I try to force myself to push through it, and i inevitably fail cuz mental illness, it can make me feel even worse about myself.

SO, i guess first, decide, is it a rotting day or is it a "lets do SOMETHING today"?

if it's a rotting day, thats okay! embrace it! put on the comfort show that you dont even have the energy to focus on watching, stay in your pajamsas if thats what you need. let yourself have that and remember that its a LITERAL ILLNESS its the equivalent of trying to walk with a broken leg, its fuckin hard, man.

I have a "depression cheat sheet" that I originally made for my ex cuz he was also a mentally ill human and when you have two of those in one relationship it's....yeahh...

I think it's something like this:

Drink a glass of water

eat a home cooked meal

take a shower

go for a walk

Those are the essentials. sometimes even those need to be abbreviated. like maybe you order in, instead of cooking, but if you can cook, it really helps to do 1 task from start to finish! or maybe instead of a shower, you just brush your teeth. sometimes even that feels impossible. if you have to sit down while doing it, sit down. there are no rules that say you must stand up to clean your teeth!!

IF it's a day where you are able to do more, maybe do stuff to engage your 5 senses? that usually helps to ground me in the real world and get me out of my head. so...fluffy blanket, a strongly scented candle, music, fresh air, anything thats about YOUR BODY.

and if its a day where you feel like pushing through, trust me, don't go about your day as normal. pick an easy task. people always say that you should put the hardest part of your to do list at the top. THAT IS NOT FOR THE MENTALLY ILL, YALL! start with something you KNOW you are likely to complete. for me, that's always reading 5 pages of whatever book im working my way through that day. but sometimes it's journaling for 10 min, sometimes its literally watching a matty healy slutty edit and then doing some morning stretches! notice howim not saying "read a whole chapter," or "journal for half an hour." THE GOAL IS ACHIEVABLE. SMALL WINS. It builds the momentum in your brain and makes you more likely to complete the next task if you start off with success. ESPECIALLY if you're an ADHD girlie like myself who already has a dopamine deficiency that makes your brain crave that shit.

Here's the hard part: routine. again as someone with ADHD and anxiety and shit, routine is so so so hard for me. but its the most helpful for depression. you'll be tempted, the second that your brain starts to feel even a bit better, to just do whatever you like. NO, NO, NO! stay on that routine. waking up and going to bed at the same time everyday, doing the same things like coffee/ breakfast, work/ exercise, in the same order, helps get you started. There's a reason that George mentioned it in that Tape Notes episode when mentioning his own depression. it helps. it sucks. but it helps lmao.

this one is lame but: you're a human being. you're allowed to fall apart, cry, suck, not feel okay, not be productive, feel like dying, etc. as long as you dont actually die, then its okay. life is fuckin hard man. being alive is hard. and every day that you successfully get out of bed in the morning is a win. the only reason you dont feel like that is because capitalism has taught us to put a quantity onto our self-worth but that is literally fake. you are worthy just because you exist and sometimes that is enugh.

you do NOT need to do x, y, z to "reward yourself" with rest or love or mysic or food or the things that make you feel good. you can feel good and deserve it no matter what.

okay first of all, he’s the type who rarely talks in general, however when he’s with you he actually manages to talk a lot more.

the whole shiratorizawa team was bamboozled when they realised that ushi was a completely different person around you- not just in the social sense, but he would every so often put his arm behind your back as a subtle reminder that he’s always there for you.

this man aint into the whole pda thing for reasons we will never understand (for all i know he probably doesnt even know what pda is) but he often does these little noticeable things to show he appreciates you.

also he has a habit of tensing up slightly before a match, especially when he knows you’re going to be watching because he doesn’t want to screw it up (even though he’s literally the ace he wants to play his best when ur there to support him)

dates with him are so mf classy- and let me tell u this man is a freaking gentleman. eating out in a restaurant? you best believe hes opening all the doors for you, taking off your jacket, paying for the meal etc etc.

and most importantly, the main thing he cares about is you, so he’ll always be asking if you’re okay and comfortable with things (basically hes surprisingly good at communicating)

my man fucking adores the crap out of you. and hes not afraid to show it. yes, he’s literally into pda, doesnt matter where you are- he cant keep his hands off you. after all, you’re his paradise. you’re always either holding hands or he uses you as his lil resting pole (where he wraps his arms around you and just leans against you like a sloth). very very cuddly man. he loves showing you off to all his friends and gets excited over the littlest things about you. if you sneezed cutely- hes gonna be thinking about that the whole day. if you said a particular sentence in a cute way- hes gonna go rant to some stranger about how mf lucky he is to be dating you.

he is perceptive as fuck. he notices the small details- how your tone changes, your mood, the way you behave (no lie he truly is the guess monster) but hes very attentive, especially when it comes to you. knows when you’re sad and immediately comes up with a way to cheer you up. he can read you extremely well and always makes sure that you’re comfortable. (bit like ushi)

dates with this man are on another level. running through a parking lot at 3am type of shit. and yes, theyre so fucking fun- he knows exactly how to have a good time and this man seriously has a lot of energy (y’all would’ve just jumped into the ocean at 3am and he would still be ready to go on another adventure). he always finds the most random places to have a picnic- sometimes during the day it would be behind a random person’s shed (until the owner finds yall and u guys start running for ur lives). he always puts you first and makes sure that you’re happy and that you know how much you’re loved by him.

he loves having philosophical convos with you, even if it doesnt make sense. he will think of something ridiculous and come up with a theory on that- and if you match his vibe he will literally want to marry you right there.

I’m in the minority in that I didn’t want to see…like any of it. If Nakatani had cut straight from Yuu saying, “Here I go,” to the next morning, I would have been fine, honestly. At first when it happened I was pretty shocked and icked out because like minors and also they’re like my children lowkey and I saw things I never wanted or needed to see. Only one gif could adequately describe my mood at the time.

But I’m glad for all of y’all thirsty ass motherfuckers because Nakatani literally went to her editor like

The morning after was really cute, but most of what I liked about this chapter was before the sex scene. We finally brought Mio’s dead ass rolling in her grave back to a topic of conversation. It was something. I’ll take it. And Touko…god she’s such a dunce. Yuu truly is a morosexual, and that’s official. The whole scene where Touko was innocently like, “You keep saying we’re girlfriends and lovers, but personally I don’t want to put a label on it,” I was literally like, “ToUko im BREaKinG out in HIVeS BEcauSe of yOU.” Understandably, Yuu was nervously kinda like, “Um…why?” Touko barely saved herself from ruin by saying some shit like, “Oh, we definitely are girlfriends and lovers and all that, but since our relationship is going to change so much over time, I don’t feel like giving it a name, I’d rather us just be me and Yuu (haha get it because you).” Which is like,,,pretty dumb, but everyone in this world has their trash, and Touko Nanami is mine. It is actually incredibly sweet that she also views her relationship with Yuu in the long-term, and never once thought otherwise. Anyway, Touko basically waves around her character arc and her newfound peace of mind, like, “Love changes, relationships change. Isn’t that awesome?” and then from that draws the conclusion that the only thing that won’t change is “her and Yuu,” so she doesn’t want to give their relationship any labels which she deems transient and fleeting? Wait…?

Literally Yuu in this chapter in that one panel: Senpai no baka *already taking off her clothes* God Touko you are so fucking stupid

One of the best lines in the whole chapter, to me, ironically happens during the sex scene that I’m not so fond of. I’m basing this off the translation by Sogeking on reddit since I didn’t have the time/energy to decipher all that Japanese text, at least not for that scene. I’ll breeze past the part where Touko is like, “Will you think of us as [Yuu and Touko] too for me?” because we don’t have the time to get into that bullshit today, Touko.

The part where Yuu says, “Because I thought that I wanted to become a version of myself that was capable of falling in love with someone, I ended up becoming just that. That’s why, from here on out as well, I’ll be able to choose for myself. My ‘love’ is one that I’ve chosen for myself. I want go on loving you.”

That. THAT. That’s the tea. The fucking yaGaTe. That’s one of the main reasons I fell for this story so hard, distilled into a couple lines right there.

“I wanted to become X version of myself. I decided that. And that’s who I became.” My dissatisfaction with the past few chapters aside, Nakatani had written herself into a place where she could have easily slapped some fanservice on the tail end of this manga and called it Good. She could have just left it at the fact that Yuu is gay as fuck (she is) and never said a word about how uncertain she was at the beginning ever again. Never mentioned it.

But this line, to me, explicitly acknowledges the fact that Yuu is aspec. Explicitly acknowledges it. Right in the middle of banging her girlfriend. So how about that. Yuu herself definitively states that this is not a story of “first love,” it’s a story about self-discovery. (Besides, “first love” implies there will be others and ya girls themselves have already decided that they’re endgame.)

You will eventually become you.

Anyway, the final chapter of this manga comes out (for us in the west) on my birthday. That’s poetic. I’m sad but ready to read what I hope is an excellent concluding chapter. It’ll probably give us some kind of timeskip, and that…that fascinates me. Sigh, I just hope it’s good.

This manga meant a lot to me and my personal development in the past six months. This series isn’t anywhere near perfect, but damn if it hasn’t been a ride just in my relatively short time being a fan. The story and its characters are very near and dear to my heart. I’m not completely satisfied with the way things have gone in the past few chapters just on a personal level–I would have preferred more introspective character stuff than, like, a sex scene, but I still think this series is quite special in many ways and I adore it.

I’m still not a hundred percent sure how I feel about the handling of the sex scene itself. Like some panels/pages were tastefully handled, I felt, some of it was understated enough for me and actually quite cute, like basically all of page 29 where their conversation is being narrated over those images of Touko getting all squirrel-y that Yuu isn’t also taking her clothes off, that shit was cute, some of the other stuff was cute. And then other pages were just kind of…a bit too much for me and felt a bit too voyeuristic for comfort (and more voyeuristic than this series has ever been) and I didn’t really need it. But for those of you who were super pleased by it and think that it was handled tastefully–power to you. Y’all deserve it.

Edit: i should have mentioned this already but I’m actually really proud of Yuu in this chapter. She WENT for it. She knew exactly what she wanted and she got it. She went there for one reason and that was to smash.

She takes in a shaky breath and shuts her eyes. Her hair spills around her face when she leans forward to put her chin on her knees. Dave and Karkat exchange a look that is equal parts confused, miserable, and desperate.

Something else comes hurtling out of the hole in the sky, too fast for Jade to catch. It hits the ground with a clap of green lightning. The collision sends a geyser of dirt, rock, and vapor into the air. Dave flash-steps to shield Karkat. Jade doesn’t move, taking the brunt of the explosion face on, using her abilities to warp the energy around her so that she’s a mote at the center of the storm. When the dust clears, she’s the first to jump in the crater, trailing smoke behind her.

There’s a body at the center of it. The torso is bloody, tangled, and curled into a fetal position. Its shoes are missing, but otherwise the outfit is quite familiar to her: it’s a dead ringer for her old Witch of Space uniform. Jade touches the body with the toe of her shoe, and then gasps when it rolls over to reveal its face.

JADE: its... JADE: ME???

Okay what the FUCK.  It sounds like there’s going to be some context for that postscript after all.  Something to bridge the gap between when that 16-yo Jade falls into the singularity and when Aradia goes off with her through a wormhole

I’m going to guess up front that this happens BEFORE the postscript... this younger version of Jade fell into the black hole and came out in THIS alternate timeline, possibly rather changed by the experience.  But then again, the way the sky opened up... actually, couldn’t that be just a “natural” manifestation of the black hole abilities encouraged by Calliope or done by the singularity alone, followed by later in the Postscript this Jade actually getting control of it??

And... reading on, from the sound of it, her eyes aren’t black yet, either.  Sounds like that’s to come, before the postscript.  Question being, is it alt!Callie black eyes, or some black-hole-powers visual manifestation?  Wait, never mind, I misread; this teenage Jade-corpse has NOT opened their eyes yet, so they couldn’t possibly tell, and the stuff about them “shaking” was about the adult Jade standing over her.  Never mind.  Let’s see which timeframe this Jade came from.

Honestly? I don’t have a formal warm-up, but I definitely like to have my fingers all warmed-up and ready for lots of typing! I really need to get in the mindspace for the particular image/idea being portrayed, though.

I don't always need a warm up, but doing panel borders for HoK makes for an excellent warm up. It gets my brain switch gears to comic mode. Music is great, but I only turn it on for important moments (or illustrations outside of comic). There are certain moods that... recur in important moments in my story, and I have playlists for those. e.g. 'sad emotional intimacy'

I guess since I have done it professionally as a 2d animator, and there is not really time to warm up, that I have learned to just start

I do warm ups for everything! though what I define as warmups depend on each creator. For me, it begins with stretches and sketching, ill doodle things i need to get out of my head so i'm not distracted by those ideas- they usually involve studies, certain character interactions, or thumbing out pieces I want to tackle later! I may sure to draw everyday to flex that too, so its also important to be able to relax those creative muscles with some pre-work!

also! my warm ups vary with what medium i work in. if Im working in watercolours, i practice fine pencil work and get my lines as loose as possible. when it's comic (so mainly inking) i do what I described above with character studies and what not

Because I usually finish off whatever I had been working on the day before, warmups for me are kind of the process of starting a new piece. All the sketching and thumbing to get my next idea out work pretty well for warming me up, and then I feel ready to go by the time I'm needing to do things like lines. I also get music going that fits the mood of what I'm working on, like lots of people seem to do! Probably because illustrations, I just do them whenever I feel like it, so my brain is already ready (i.e. I don't start if my brain isn't ready)

So for me, the panel borders can function like a warmup without being a "ritual." Kinda like if you're... say... hiking, walking from your parking spot to the trailhead can be a warmup even if it's not a ritual and is necessary anyway

I actually read in a artist self care comic "Draw Stronger: Self Care of Artist" that you are supposed to stretch and stuff before you art so your body is warmed up for long periods of sitting. Things i draw before getting into main art, the one line challenge where you draw something using one line, gesture drawing warm ups, and always becuase it's something I recently been doing, is drawing a thumbs up on a page that I can erase later or keep in a sketchbook as in like "Good job "(edited)

Another dive-right-inner here. I mean, I do loose pencil sketches before putting down lineart, but it's not like a separate warmup drawing before the real one, it's just the start of the real one.

If my brain isn't in "comics mode" and I need to get a page done...I find a nice secluded spot, sit down with the blank sketchbook, and stare at the empty paper until ideas start clicking into place. Unrelated sketches would be a distraction at that point -- same as checking twitter, just one more excuse for my brain to focus on something other than the page.

Used to do the seclusion in local restaurants( whether it's a nice place or just a plastic fast-food table), but obviously that hasn't been an option for a while :/

Week 9 Writing Assignment

Working Notes:

             This week I started working on my final project in actuality, instead of just planning it in my head. It will take the form of a facebook page about climate change, and the posts will appear to be from the community that follows it, even though I’ll be writing all of them. I’ll begin by editing writing responses from class that are applicable to my theme, and posting those. I am also planning on writing a longer prose that is very research heavy. I first adapted my 8th week writing response (where we had to track food intake), and tried to make it focus more on global warming. I am still mid-progress in changing this response. I am struggling because I received polarizing feedback—people who liked the shortness and abruptness because it added to the mood, and others who wanted it longer, or who wanted more research and URLs added. I think I will make it a little longer before adding it to the facebook page. I am also currently working on finding striking graphics, which I will try to alternate with more writing-heavy posts. Hopefully these graphics will also serve to make it look like a real facebook page. I have graphics that show global temperatures, global CO2 levels, and the effects of greenhouse gases. Lastly, I am also adapting my response from week 6 (walk, observe, write, research, correct). I am attempting to add graphics and even more research to the final product, but I am not yet satisfied with the result.

Week 8 Adaptation:

Tl;dr: Palm Oil is a very useful substance, but it is incredibly dangerous for the environment, and its production is mostly unregulated.

Palm oil is a very problematic food because it is cheap and a good butter substitute, putting it in high demand. It is used in Nutella, lipstick, shampoo/conditioner, girl scout cookies, ice cream, sliced bread, salad dressing, pizza dough, and dark chocolate. This leads to widespread deforestation to make room for palm tree monoculture, which contributes to climate change and greenhouse gases yearly even more than transportation emissions. These trees are often burnt to clear them, releasing tons of carbon dioxide, and also more potent greenhouse gases like nitrogen dioxide and methane. Unfortunately, due to the ease of harvest, high levels of saturated fat, and even higher demand, capitalism will not allow this market to die off anytime soon. After going through the week, I realized how essential palm oil is to modern products and cooking. I realized that this will not be an easy material to transition out of my life, so I looked up alternatives. According to activist groups, it is not necessary to stop using palm oil, it is necessary only to begin producing it in a sustainable way. This includes reseeding areas that have had their soil drained of nutrients, and using the wood from the forest that is cleared in productive ways, instead of burning it or allowing it to decompose. This may have a large overhead cost (harvesting wood is more expensive than burning it or clearing it in less expensive ways), but eventually selling the wood will make up for this cost. In my opinion, this wood resale and sustainability focus must be mandated by law, or it will never happen (information from The Telegraph and National Geographic).

Week 6 Adaptation: Global Warming and apathy

1.     I’m not done editing this piece, but I think that I will eventually break it into 2 different pieces:

a.     Standalone “apathy” prose

b.     Mix of pictures of students (with stickers over their faces) enjoying the february warmth and EPA research—try to mix daily life/enjoyment with fear.

2.     Thoughts on Global warming from walk on the midway and around the quad:

a.     Yesterday, the average temperature was below freezing, and I had to wear my gloves while I was eating my apple so my fingers didn’t hurt from the cold.

b.     Today, the high is 55, the low is 43, and I don’t need my gloves.

c.     Everyone seems happy about how warm it is, even though it should be terrifying.

d.     I walked out of Kent and two girls were walking in front of me in light jackets. “It feels like spring!” one of them said to the other. “I know right!”

e.     Chance of rain around 18:00

f.      I’m wearing a light jacket, but it’s unzipped. I’m considering taking it off.

g.     Looking around, the ground (that should be frozen!!!) is fairly green. If I couldn’t see the lack of foliage on the trees, I could think that it was spring or summer.

h.     Warmth and light lifts everyone’s spirits, psychologists know this. There’s even a condition called SAD, where people are more likely to becomes depressed in the winter.

                                               i.     So shouldn’t the warmth make me happy?

                                             ii.     It does.

                                            iii.     But that scares me more.

                                            iv.     If people are made happier by the warmth, they are going to be even more apathetic about trying to fix it.

                                              v.     It’s hard to crusade “BRING BACK THE COLD” because very few will gather behind that rallying cry

3.     Important points from research from EPA website:

a.     Many extreme temperature conditions are becoming more common.

b.     Record-setting daily high temperatures have become more common than record lows.

c.     This graph shows the dramatic increase in temperature of the earth’s surface and the lower troposphere.

d.     Worldwide, 2015 was the warmest year on record and 2006–2015 was the warmest decade on record since thermometer-based observations began.

e.     The North, the West, and Alaska have seen temperatures increase the most, while some parts of the Southeast have experienced little change.

                                               i.     It is easier for some regions to deny than others

f.      Nationwide, unusually hot summer days (highs) have become more common over the last few decades (see Figure 2). The occurrence of unusually hot summer nights (lows) has increased at an even faster rate.

g.     If the climate were completely stable, one might expect to see highs and lows each accounting for about 50 percent of the records set. 

h.     the Endangered Species Act (ESA) helps ensure that actions taken or permitted by the federal government will not jeopardize the continued existence of a listed species or result in adverse modification of designated critical habitat.

i.      Americans generated 33 million tons of plastics in 2014, about 13 percent of the waste stream. Only 9.5 percent of plastics were recycled in 2013.

j.      It can take from 450 to 1000 years for plastic to completely decompose.

4.     Apathy

I don’t see any coats. Almost everyone is wearing long sleeve t-shirts or light jackets. Some people are even wearing short sleeves. It’s an interesting phenomenon—a form of control. We don’t mind it, because we don’t notice it. We also don’t mind it because who doesn’t love the warmth? But the weather controls more than we think—like those bitterly cold days in the past couple weeks. Global warming causes both high and low extremes in temperature.

When it lets us show off our arms, pale and white after the long winter, we’re happy.

We don’t see the species that are endangered and extinct at the north and south poles as the ice melts.

We don’t see the rainforests, horribly deforested.

We do see the extra sunlight, and we’re happy.

 Global warming was a battle we were unwilling to fight before, but after recent political changes it seems more likely than ever that this problem will be purposefully and completely ignored. The Trump administration removed mentions of climate change from the official United States of America energy website.

 According to Emile Durkheim, a noted sociologist: “Some will object that science is often the antagonist of opinion, the errors of which it combats and corrects. But science can succeed in this task only if it has sufficient authority, and it can gain such authority only from opinion itself…” When the people with authority deny scientific truths, the entire foundation of our modern society is eroded. This forces me to ask: At what point will climate change become undeniable? What will these deniers say then?

But the real question is, what will motivate people?

The warmth scares me, but everyone enjoys it.

The pictures of the animals we’ll never see again on our facebook timeline perhaps evoke a second of sorrow and guilt.

 We do see the extra sunlight, and we’re happy.
