happy new years! to celebrate, i’m posting a list of some of my favorite fics of this year, sorted by word count. i tried not to include a bunch of super well-known, commonly-recced fics, and of course, there are SO many more that i didn’t include just because there isn’t enough time in the world. but i really wanted to lift up some amazing authors, my friends included, as well as some more underground fics. happy reading!!🥳

my top byler fics of 2022

1 - 10k

- it’s a choice (getting swept away) by @wiseatom. i just skimmed this again to see if i wanted to include it, and even just SKIMMING, i was having goddamn heart palpitations. there is something so special about healthy communication and resolving misunderstandings with emotional intelligence and kindness instead of anger. don’t get me wrong, big dramatic blowups are lots of fun to read, but this one stands out for how quiet it is. how gentle. not only is the willel done FANTASTICALLY, but byler here is so soft and tentative, and i was eating up every minute of it. as always, with thea, a phenomenal read. - the body is a blade by inblue. this author is severely underrated—incredible prose, such unique fics, and so much genuine emotion in such a short space. i sincerely recommend all of their works!! phenomenal, and despite their short length, they’ve stuck with me since i read them—this one in particular. (categories: poetic, unique, character study, will byers needs a hug)

10 - 20k

- i’m caught up in you by @wiseatom. the first half of this is genuinely novel-worthy—beautifully written & crafted, to the point where i couldn’t stop writing down sentences as inspiration. the second half kicks you into an apocalyptic adventure, filled with byler banter, miscommunication, wound tending, a Painting Debacle™️, and literally everything you could want out of byler in the upside down. thea’s byler is SO much fun to read—they absolutely are best friends, and they don’t let you forget it! the banter is so realistic and snarky and fun, and i’ve read this a million times over at this point. infinite kudos always💗💗 (categories: byler in the upside down, miscommunication, angst & fluff, tension, wound tending, will has a gun)

- i hate accidents (except when we went from friends to this) by blackdeathmamba. a classic, and for a good reason. great tension & pining, super butterfly-inducing, with a twist at the end that simultaneously had me yelling and giggling into my pillow. ADORABLE. so, so wonderful. (categories: pining, miscommunication, college byler, roommates, fluff)

- running up that road by @smoosnoom. i had a really hard time trying to figure out which of moon’s fics to rec bc i feel like all of them, in general, defined my 2022. and of course, everyone and their mother has recced tearing you asunder! but going back over the fics, i think this one truly had the biggest impact on me. first of all, it was the first fic i ever read while listening to the accompanying playlist, and that experience literally changed my life. it is so hard for me to read without listening to music now😭 but seriously reading this w/ moon’s song choices felt like watching a movie. second of all, i really got inside mike’s head here. his character was great, and the fic displayed some of his more unpleasant qualities that some people might shy away from, like anger or resentment. this was just a very real portrayal of byler, and of mike in general. and a lot of the scenes in here—specifically the beginning and end—have stuck with me since i read them. overall, incredible experience, and i’d read it again in a heartbeat. 20 - 30k

- the gaps and the silence by delusionaltogether (whyyyyy) aka @parkitaco. i read this last night and cried my heart out—not big dramatic sobs, but more of a silent & continuous cry that would pop back up without warning. this was just so exquisitely written—the best of parker’s work that i’ve seen, which is such an impressive feat because i love absolutely everything they publish. the resolving of miscommunication, the healing of byler’s fractured relationship, the responsibility taken on both sides, and the love that still persists through all of it—this is a masterpiece. it is a triumph of human emotion, and a truly excellent mark of good writing. cannot recommend enough—along with absolutely all of parker’s other works. - mike wheeler’s guide to falling in love with a superhero by @smoosnoom. this was my first introduction to spiderwill, and i loved every minute of it. this is fun, fast-paced, a little crazy, and just SUCH an enjoyable read. plus, i get a cameo as bagel girl, which in my opinion, is the best part!! but fr this was honestly so well done and even as i’m writing this, i’m getting the urge to read it again. loved, loved, LOVED. (categories: spiderwill, fluff, light-hearted, energetic)

30 - 40k

- you can hear it in the silence by @astrobei. there is truly not enough praise in the world for suni’s fics, or her writing in general, but this one was really something special. mike in this fic is one of my favorite mikes ever, and i think about his big conversation with robin at least once a day. this is truly just a magical coming of age romance. it is so soft & tender & real, and i genuinely could read it every single day and never get bored. also, as someone who worked in food service, i appreciated the accurate portrayal🫡 but also. never again. customers can suck my dick. getting off track here :) (categories: coming of age, friends to lovers, mutual pining, soft)

- i know, i know, i know by aude_sapere. season 4 rewrite!! the writing of this is incredible, the plot is fantastic, and it was one of my first really notable reads in this fandom. really gives will his main character moment, as he deserves!! (categories, s4 rewrite, main character will, pining, action)

40 - 50k

- i’ve come home, i’m so cold by @astrobei. this one is just. ohhhhh my god where do i even start?? this is my ideal college byler fic. it’s literally so perfect, start to finish. will’s narration is incredible, and additionally the plot is just so, SO interesting?! there’s something about suni’s writing that i just can’t get enough of. she writes exactly the way i think and it results in prose that flows effortlessly and is so much fun to read!! i am just chomping all of her fics up one by one and i am still hungry☹️ i think suni needs to write just for me forever & always actually. (categories: college byler, mystery, pining, best friends to lovers, roommates)

- boys don’t cry series by @padmedala. this series is so special to me, specifically the first installment. it was one of the first works i really read that focused on will’s queerness in other terms than his relationship with mike! there was so much queer joy & healing & growing up in this series, and it was really beautifully explored in a way that left me crying, but still unable to put my phone down. really, really wonderful, and criminally underrated. (categories: coming of age, season 4-5, queer joy, healing, romance, pining)

50 - 100k

- chiron in gemini by babydraygen. this was one of the first season 5 fics that i read, and i still think this is a REALLY interesting take on it. eddie’s alive, mike is kind of a dick, and the apocalypse is in hawkins, but everyone’s pretty chill about it. i think the characters here were so complex and interesting, and i was honestly hooked the whole time. (categories: season 5, coming of age, angst, getting together)

- there is a season by ghostlin. yet another s5 fix-it, mike-centric this time. really well written, great character development, and truly so much fun to read. to quote my original bookmark: this is, without a doubt, one of the best fics i’ve ever read. writing is impeccable, everything (EVERYTHING) is perfect, and i cherished every single word. this is my season 5. if you are reading this right now, stop and read this fic. yes, me too. read it again. (categories: s5, character development, slow burn, apocalypse, drama)

- i’ll find a new place to be from by @andiwriteordie . clearly i have a thing for s5 fics, but this was honestly so amazing!! i think about it a lot, and am definitely pulling inspo for my own eventual s5 fic (hopefully coming next year!) andi has written so many (and i mean SO. MANY) wonderful fics for this fandom, which is a gift in itself. but there’s nothing that i think about more than this one. (categories: s5, drama, will byers has powers, getting together)

100k +

- you are the heart by touchthesky. i spent months reading this one, chapter by chapter, as it uploaded, and i don’t regret it one bit. this was such an interesting, complex, and well-done take on season 5. there were some really shocking plot twists, gripping moments of turmoil, and satisfyingly resolved arcs for every single character. the action sequences are god-tier, the internal dialogue is fascinating, the worldbuilding is INCREDIBLE, and i honestly just cannot say enough good things about this fic. will probably be giving it another read soon! (categories: s5, angst, the full package, slow burn, will pov, intense worldbuilding, main character death)

i think someone’s already asked you this, but do you ever get writing inspiration from music? or have certain songs you associate with certain characters?

for me, 39 by Queen, Slipping Through my Fingers by Abba and Asleep by the Smiths are such Five songs!

also wanted to say i love your writing! i think you’re absolutely brilliant, you write in such a beautifully grounded way and i literally want your fics to be made into movies they’re so amazing! i hope your writing brings you as much joy as it does me!

Oh, I don't know if I've answered that specific question. I've talked before about how I write to music/the kind of music I write to (shoutout to my playlist oh for it's sad vibes, it does such heavy lifting). But songs that have inspired scenes...

The answer is definitely Yes, but can I remember them... For the Post-S3 Five And Allison Talk Fic haven't shared, a specific scene of that I haven't officially written vibed hard with The King by Sarah Kinsley (lyrics half fit), although I think that was more I was thinking about it and that song came on and turbo'd it. I think that's the closest one I've got off the top of my head. EDIT: Back to say how the fuck did I forget about Kokomo. Iconic. Included here for Obvious Reasons for any JT readers. The entire goddamn Amanda and Five road trip came from Kokomo coming on in my car during a commute home.

For songs that I associate with characters, absolutely. I've got a whole playlist of Number songs and songs Five likes (made with @non-plutonian-druid, linked HERE and HERE if anyone is curious). I've got my Five and Delores/Five Apocalypse Playlist HERE. You'll notice a theme, here. Gonna go do a listen for the Five Vibes of your recs, can always use more Five Songs. I feel like music is more fic based than character based, I've got songs I associate with fics (from listening to them while writing or vibing about them). Time Is On My Side (Irma Thomas) and Hotel California (Eagles) for Searching for Good Times. Night Shift (Lucy Dacus) for Nice Things Can't Last Forever (They Still End Too Soon) despite those lyrics not really working at all, but the Vibes. The Vibes. 8. What song would make a great fic (to either write or read)?

ooooo as a music nerd i love this question and i apologize for how longwinded my answer is XD i don't do many songfics or much song-related writing [*shoves the title of two fights for freedom under the rug*] but i do have a ton of playlists and songs that make me think of specific characters or fics. to answer this question, i'll just pick one called "Fever Dream" by Dirt Poor Robins. specifically the part starting just after the 4:00 minute mark. the lyrics make me go INSANE with this idea for a dark/horror dq bros fic where doflamingo realizes that corazon is just a false identity and he can't do anything to get his brother back and it drives him even more insane. these lyrics make me crazy Now here comes the liar (lion) Clawing at your door Drunk on the blood of your brother And he's back for more (apparently the lyric is actually "lion" rather than "liar", but i hear "liar" so therefore i declare it is "liar" for the sake of my own brainrot) imagine a fic where rosinante is the one psychologically tormenting doflamingo!! unsure if i'll ever get around to writing it, but it'd probably have a similar vibe to blood gone sour.

9. How do you find new fic to read?

i usually do a nightly prowl under the one piece fandom on ao3 and either filter by most recent fics with rosinante or bell-mere. otherwise i read recs that are bumped on discord servers, or stories friends write! i'm actually terrible at reading tho i don't read nearly enough. when i have free time, i usually use it to create.

10. How do you decide what to write?

excellent question. i make a list of priorities. sometimes it's disorganized lists on my phone, sometimes i use calendars. first and foremost are things with due dates, so zine work, or gifts for exchanges, birthdays or holidays. next i prioritize stories that are works in progress, but already posted on ao3. i hate having incomplete works posted on ao3, so i strive to get them wrapped up asap. then it's a rabid thunderdome of all my other wips and ideas all wrestling for victory for who gets to be created XD i'm constantly bursting with ideas i never get to work on, unfortunately.

37. Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?

i'm gonna go ahead and promote spitfire and ice because i busted my ass on this for the crackpair event and i was actually really happy with the result? i was assigned makino x kuzan, so i threw bell-mere in there too just to shake things up, and then i fell madly in love with bell-mere x makino and their flirty banter. it captured my heart in a way i was NOT expecting. i guess the tags aren't particularly interesting to most, so it's relatively unknown with only 4 kudos and 31 hits. but look at this!! “Hey, I’ve gotta ask you something.” She leaned over the counter once Makino settled herself and refilled the pitcher for the next round. “Would I still be wanted here…after hours?” With a tight smile, Makino rested her hands over the tabletop. “We’re closed for customers after hours. I need some time to tidy up the place.” “Right, right…” Pretty gray eyes wandered. “But in this situation, I wouldn’t be a customer.” With an amused chuckle, Makino folded her arms over her stomach. “What do you want me to say, Miss Bell-mère? Do you want me to welcome you to my private quarters upstairs?” That exposed chest filled with air. “I wouldn’t be against an invitation.” smh. well, at least i'm proud of it!

Hiii so idk if you've ever listened to CHVRCHES but I was listening to their 'screen violence (director's cut)' album and it's. SO scream au to me? Like aside from the obvious horror movie motifs a lot of the songs just fit so well. Particularly Azula, but also a bit Katara and Zuko

Okay I have to say something 😭 Not only are you not “thinking too deep” or “being weird” but I LOVE that you’re thinking deep & being “weird” (in a very good way) about this fic because like — I put an INSANE like crazy insane deranged amount of thought & energy & heart into my writing so if I got the feeling no one else in the world was thinking about it deeply? I’d just simply stop posting to put it frankly. Like I’m sure I’d still find a creative outlet because my brain is like that but I surely wouldn’t continue to pour my heart into a project if I didn’t see love for it.

Asks like this maintain my passion because it’s like ok - you see my vision you get me. This version of these characters means something to you enough that you’re thinking about them while listening to music. I LOVE it. Thank you ❤️

Now - I’m actually not too familiar with the band. I think I’ve heard a few of their songs but this ask makes me want to get familiar! That commentary is so interesting honestly. Yeah we’re all a little fascinated by violent delights. Also the way I literally quoted that line & questioned if I was being too pretentious lol

The nightmares line is soooo Azula to Zuko (possibly Zuko to Azula at times but I see it as more Azula to Zuko).

The “Screaming” one is going right onto the playlist I have for this fic immediately because I was intrigued by everything in this ask but those lyrics are like they were written specifically exactly about Scream Au Zucest like hello? It was written about them I know it.

It’s your birthday really soon, and Leo is really excited. If you ask him what his favorite holiday is, what his favorite day of the year is, even when his favorite season is, he’ll say your birthday hands down. His birthday is your favorite day of the year too, but knowing how easy it is to fluster each other, you won’t say that outright. You haven’t talked about your birthday much, in spite of how close it is. He wants to make sure this is a good day for you, as good as it can be at least. He knows you’ve had some really shitty ones in the past - especially before you met him - so now he’s determined to make them as fun and enjoyable as possible for you. He’s taking the fact that your attitude seems to be neutral leaning towards positive, maybe even happy about your birthday as a good sign.

Teeth freshly brushed, skincare applied, you’re cuddled up next to each other. You’re watching the cartoons casting soft purple and blue light into your darkened bedroom, and he’s watching your face illuminated by the screen. You look so pretty like this, you always do. Leo can’t get enough of you. He values moments like this, cherishes them so deeply he doesn’t think he can describe it. You chuckle at the end of the episode as the next one starts playing. In this episode, the main character asks her friend to hide cakes around to surprise her with. Like, a lot of cakes. 

“I want that,” you state, staring at the screen. It’s the first real birthday request you’ve made, and it makes him so happy. 

“You want a bunch of cakes?” he asks, voice gentle in the quiet atmosphere, and you can hear the smile kissing his lips. “Yeah,” you muse, hand rubbing his back, slipping below his t-shirt.

“How many?”

“Hmm…” you consider. “Two or three.” 

You’d feel bad asking for more than that. You know he’d disagree adamantly if you told him, but it’s a step forward from previous years, so you’re at peace with it. 

“What kind of cake do you want?” he asks. He’s pretty good at cooking, but he doesn’t have nearly enough experience baking, and you shouldn’t have to bake your own cake from scratch - unless you want to. He thinks he can probably get his mom to help. She adores you, and her cakes always kick ass. 

You’re quiet for a minute. 

“Can we get grocery store cake?”

“You want grocery store cake?” he asks sweetly. “Yeah,” you confirm, “like, the kind with little balloons and frosting flowers, and a printed picture of the power rangers that says ‘happy 4th birthday’ in curly font…” 

He knows exactly the kind of grocery store cake you’re talking about. You’re quiet again. He can sense some hesitance with all of this; celebrating your birthday in a way that doesn’t end in tears and fighting and disappointment is still new. It’s uncharted territory for you. He knows it’s hard, knows it’s scary. He wants to make sure you know that he understands what you’re going through, and that he’s going to be there, holding your hand, the entire time. He smiles up at you, a look so determined to get you the ultimate grocery store cake on his face that it has you chuckling.

“I will get you the biggest, most frosting flowered power rangers grocery store-iest cake they have.” He gazes at you with brazen, comedic confidence before settling back down into your chest.

You smile, a timid excitement beginning to grow. He pulls you closer, nuzzling into your neck and pressing cozy, familiar kisses against your skin. His hands run over your sides, your stomach, warm and tracking shapes, leaving reassuring touches wherever they fall. It’s a silent confirmation that he’s here for you, and it doesn’t go unnoticed. Until he can make your birthdays amazing, and fantastic, and great, he’s going to make them good. 

Walking through the familiar aisles of your grocery store, Leo drags you and your metal shopping cart around.

“Over there!” he exclaims, making a beeline for the baking aisle. Even in the harsh fluorescent lighting, he still looks really, really fucking good. The anxiety begins to melt away as you watch him, latching onto his easy going, vibrant energy. He wears a fluid sense of humor like a well loved hoodie, always wrapped around him and providing a tangible sense of comfort to everyone nearby. You stay close as you walk down the linoleum tiles, keeping a tight grip on his proverbial sleeve. After a minute or two of searching back and forth, you finally find the boxed cake mix. 

“Chocolate, vanilla, carrot cake,” he says, skimming the flavors in bright font on the boxes.

“Yeah, pretty standard…” you muse, doing the same. He’s quiet for a second, and you turn around. He’s holding boxes of your two favorite flavors, an excited smirk on his face.

“What if we combined these into a layer cake?” he asks. He watches closely as you face lights up a tiny bit.

“Perfect!” you smile, and he tosses them into the cart, satisfied that he’s starting to help you feel more like yourself. You grab a few cans of frosting in your favorite color, and start to look at the sprinkles. 

“Estrella,” he says, and you turn around again. 

“Oh my god,” you gasp. He’s holding a box mix and matching frosting in the flavor of your favorite cereal.

“We kind of have to, right?” he asks, coaxing another smile out of you.

“Absolutely,” you say, examining the box before tossing it into the cart “this looks so good…” 

After thoroughly inspecting the various sprinkles and decorations, you settle on colored sugar in your favorite color, and two bottles of pastel star shaped sprinkles. You grab a few small tubes of frosting, also in your favorite colors, before finally making your way over to the bakery section. You grab some candy and chips along the way, then begin looking through displays of cupcakes. After skimming through several weird flavor combinations and more than a few misplaced boxes of muffins, you pick out a box of cupcakes with different colors of frosting and little birthday toppers on them.

“We should probably pick out the ice cream cake last, right?” Leo asks, looking at the ingredients of a cherry hand pie. 

“Yeah,” you agree, pausing to look at different bagel flavors they have in a case. The last thing either of you want is for one of your cakes to melt. You meet him over at the cake counter, looking at the different flavors and designs. You don’t see any with frosting flowers, but your focus is quickly pulled away.

“Aww,” you say, pointing out one with a trio of frosting balloons in the corner, “that one’s cute.” 

“Yeah,” he agrees, checking the smile on your face, “it looks really good too.” He places it in the cart, careful not to smush any of the other items you already have in there. 

On your way to the frozen aisle, you take turns pointing out various items you have no use for and declaring matter of factly, “I want that.” It’s a small joke, but it’s been making both of you laugh nonetheless. You lose track of Leo for a second. You’re about to call out ‘Sparky?’ in hopes of finding him, before you see him hovering at an end cap by the pharmacy section. 

“We should get this.” he deadpans, holding up a travel sized bottle of generic brand pepto bismol for kids, with a skateboarding giraffe that says awesome! on the label. You repress a chuckle.

“We’ll use it to decorate my cake,” you say, a faux sweet sincerity to your voice that gets a loud laugh out of him, and then one out of you by proxy. 

You finally find the frozen food aisle. You stand next to each other, staring at ice cream cakes and ice cream bars, and various other forms of ice cream for a little while. Soon you settle on a cute cake that will go nicely with the other flavors you picked out already. You place it in your cart. You close the door, and Leo draws a little heart on the foggy glass of the freezer. It makes you smile, bringing in that comfortable warmth in your chest you always get from being around him. You draw a little heart next to his, then a smiley face. He adds a birthday hat, then traces a little cake in the remaining fog, writing ‘hbd.’ and you both giggle. You’re sure that will be a fun surprise for whoever comes to get an ice cream cake next. 

At the check out, he grabs your favorite candy, then one for himself as you begin to check out. 

“Oh shit,” he says quietly, looking at the cart. You look over at him. “We forgot the milk. I’ll go grab it real quick.” you agree, and he heads off. You’re glad he remembered, you’d feel pretty silly if you spent all this time at the grocery store and forgot something like milk. 

You continue carefully taking all the cakes out of your cart. You feel good about all the ones you picked out, and you’re excited to make the boxed cakes together. And by making them together, you mean you’ll make them and he’ll keep you company, then you’ll both decorate them together. Talking with Leo, sitting on the kitchen floor with him while the sweet smell of pastries and vanilla fills the room, making each other laugh while the timer steadily ticks down is your favorite part of baking anything. You’re looking forward to it.

It takes him a little longer than you expected, but he’s back with milk by the time you’re almost done checking out. He triumphantly presents you with the carton. He checks your energy, your vibe again, and he’s relieved when you don’t seem suspicious at all. By the time you’re walking back to your car, making easy conversation, he’s confident he can pull off this extra surprise for you. 

Usually on your birthday, you have some kind of movie night with your close friends, maybe a few family members you’re actually on good terms with. You don’t like to make a fuss about your birthday, that much is obvious, and everyone knows to play it low key. This time is no different, you think, as you set out bowls of popcorn and boxes of candy on the coffee table. Once the gang’s all here, before you start the movie, Leo brings out the cake. Then another. And another. By the third cake, everyone is thoroughly amused. 

“Wait, how many cakes are there?” Hazel asks with a laugh. 

“Seven.” Leo states, bringing out cake number four. 

“I thought we got five,” you say.

“We did,” he starts, bringing out yet another cake, “cupcakes, two boxed cakes, and ice cream cake, plus the one my mom made for you…”

You let out a giggle, still so endeared from when she had dropped by to give it to you in person earlier and wish you a happy birthday. She gave you the biggest hug, and the cake smelled so good, you really couldn’t wait to try it. In spite of how well you get along, it still came as a shock that she would do something so sweet for you. 

“You really thought she wasn’t going to make you a cake?” he asks rhetorically, “C’mon Estrella, she loves you.” He squeezes your shoulder with a smile, one you return.

“Yeah, but that’s still six!” you call as he leaves the room again.  

“Well…” he starts, a mischievous tone to his voice. You have an idea of where this might be going. 

“What did you do?” you ask through a smile. You see a flash of glowing orange light outside the doorway, and he signals for everyone to start singing. He enters with a sheet cake covered in frosting flowers and sprinkles, adorned with a picture of the power rangers on it, reading “happy 4th birthday!” in curly script. He lights the rest of the candles with his fingertips and places the cake in front of you. You let out the sweetest, most heartfelt bubbling laugh he’s heard in a while, and it warms him to his core.

In the glow of the tiny candle light, the corners of your eyes are misty as your friends/found family sing happy birthday to you. Every detail you mentioned, every little thing about this cake that might be totally meaningless to someone else, Leo remembered it. He perfected your vision to a tee. 

The sight of the brightly colored crime fighters looking back at you as candle wax drips down near the frosting fills you with a joyous feeling you can’t describe. Leo intertwines his hand with yours. You’re fighting giggles and tears, and when you blow out the candles, you think this is the first great birthday you’ve had. The first of many. You’re looking forward to when your birthdays become awesome, spectacular, perfect, and you can’t wait to spend all of them with Leo.

helo charlie friend, tysm for the ask! you picked out some banger questions and jakob and i were happy to answer them! without further ado, all of our long winded answers will be below the cut. apologies in advance for the walls of text lol

13. Do you listen to music while you write?  If yes, what have you been listening to recently?

cas: i personally have a hard time writing if the music has words but writing in silence is hard too, so my go to writing music for YEARS has always been anything by Peter Gundry. i used to just listen to his dark magic music compilations on youtube, but now i'll go through his albums on spotify. i'll write to music with words on rare occasion but only if it's a character/fic playlist of songs that remind me of the character or story in some way. i generally don't make those playlists public, but i have found that i put Lord of the Lost in as many playlists as possible to the point that a lot of them are half LOTL songs lol. here's a casual link to my recs playlist for that band lmao.

34. How much of your personal life/experience do you include in your fics?

jakob: id say we tend to incorporate a lot, which is funny if i answer on a more personal level because i dont consider myself to have lived that much life at all to be incorporating anything valuable of it. i've only been around in this system a couple months. but regardless of which of us is doing the writing, we all will pull from everyone's experiences. some things just read more viscerally when you have a memory of experience to take notes from. always have to change up details of course. it's like that homework copying meme except the copied stuff looks better than the original thing.

45. What genre/trope do you tend to write the most?

jakob: it's either comedy or it's super angsty drama/romance. rarely inbetween. i think i stick more to the dramatic, angsty stuff though. i havent written anything very humorous. im way too conscious of how much of an endless barrage of sadness my current wip is. i almost feel bad and want to lighten it up a bit lol. meanwhile cas loves writing both emotional shit and extremely stupid cursed goofy shit. they're also that asexual person who has an unnecessary amount of never-to-be-published smutty wips because exploring that kind of stuff is fun to them, but i am the asexual who could not be less interested in being near that kind of thing, much respect to those who are. i dont know enough about tropes to know which ones we write the most.

50. How would you describe your writing style?

jakob: i think i have a fairly literal writing style. they go here. they do that. being "flowery" with descriptions is a conscious effort and unless i get a specific visceral concept or wording in my head, it will just be a pretty straightforward description of events. i imagine the jump from "x does y thing" to "eloquent description of an abstract emotion" might be fairly noticeable. and to be fair, i think it's this way with everyone in the system. i dont think there's any significant difference between our writing styles, including handwriting.

57. How conscious are you about including symbolism or foreshadowing in your fics?

cas: very conscious! it's one of my favorite things about writing fics and often is the basis for a fic concept. i love when writing has little motifs and is self referential AND THE PARALLELS! GOD THE PARALLELS MY BELOVEDS!!! if i cant include a billion parallels in my shit am i even writing? this is honestly a system wide preference too because jakob's writing is like that lol. this is one of the reasons we prefer to write fics completely before posting them so we can sufficiently make sure the parallels work out and things are tied up neatly. but its also the biggest reason we dont really have much posted either </3

🎢 Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?

In terms of most bonkers events happening, it'd probably be various short crackfics from my Tiny Turnabouts series - I can think of five or six off the top of my head that get pretty extremely ridiculous. That said, you go into those sorts of fics expecting nonsense, so I don't know if I count them in the same way as a 'wild ride' since they're short and not super unexpected/don't vary tone as much.

So, I'd probably choose either Bullymagnet Week or Declaration. The former is for the webcomic Paranatural and incorporated a week's worth of prompts into one connected fic. Given the source material there are a fair amount of shenanigans, and the prompts mean that while it's all connected it jumps around a bit throughout different chapters. The latter is a Naruto fic and it's a lot more of a wild ride in the sense of the Sasuke POV being very dramatic/confused and theorizing many different things, making a mix of angst and fluff and such that left readers wondering along with him what was going on all the way up till the epilogue.

🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?

I do, yes! It tends to depend on what I'm in the mood for at the moment, generally as well as for a specific fic. Sometimes I can write with anything (usually for more lighthearted/less serious fics), but often I listen to a specific artist/album/certain songs on a loop for any given fic. I actually have a "repeat songs" playlist of a bunch of songs that I often listen to on a loop (individually, not the playlist) that usually get me into the right mood for whatever kind of fic.

Lately I've gotten sucked into the album The Horror and the Wild by The Amazing Devil, so I've kind of playing that on repeat a lot for whatever I'm doing... but whenever I go back to certain WIPs I have particular songs that get me into the mood for them so if I pick up an older one I.

🎉 What leads you to consider a fic a success?

I don't actually think of fics in those terms, as "success/failure." The dichotomies I tend to use are more along the lines of "popular/not" and "writing I'm proud of or really enjoy rereading/not." Sometimes those overlap and sometimes they don't. For example, two of the most popular fics I've ever written are ones that I personally don't jive with as much. And conversely, I've written some things that don't get a ton of traction, but I still really like them.

I consider a fic "popular" if I get a lot of reviews/bookmarks, or sometimes even just a few but they're really detailed, if it gets recced or people feel inspired to make something from it (podfics/art/translations/fics, etc.). The number necessary to feel 'popular' varies by fandom too, since obviously there will be way fewer reviews on a smaller fandom fic but the percentage may be (or at the very least feels) higher.

Stuff I'm proud of varies. Sometimes it's because I branched out into something new, or I feel like I succeeded in writing nuance or character voice or a premise especially well. Sometimes it's just down to I think it was a fun idea and I enjoy rereading it - I definitely do 'write what you want to read' and read my own fics plenty.

Fandom / Fic Goals 2022

I was tagged by @gracerene and @teacup-tai to set out my fic and fandom goals for 2022, thank you both! 2021 was a very odd year for me, fandom wise. My word count was way, way down on previous years and I felt really disconnected (in a fic writing and reading sense) from my two main fandoms, HP and 1D/Radio One. There were also some major life things going on that kept me busy like job stuff, a house move, a milestone birthday and submitting and defending my PhD thesis, which I finally passed at the end of this year, hoorah!

However, I really miss being part of fandom in a more proactive sense. I miss chatting about fic plans and headcanons regularly, fest participation, losing myself in stories I'm reading or writing and having fics and playlists to dip into and work on. I'm not one for NY resolutions but if I have one core general goal, it's to get back into creating, pursuing really indulgent projects and just having fun with them without taking it all too seriously.

1. Play Bingo. I love having short prompts as a starting point for inspo, so I'm going to track down a multi-fandom/ship bingo card (recs please if you know of good ones out there) and use that to kickstart my writing in the new year. It's fun, low pressure and will hopefully let me play around with lots of different characters and pairings.

2. Multi-fandom participation. No matter how many separating the art from the artist posts I made, I have really struggled with practicing what I preach and for some considerable time, for me, HP no longer offered a go-to safe space for escapism and creating. That desire to write and read HP fic is returning, but I am also excited about branching out into fandoms I have been interested in but haven't participated in very much previously. At the moment I'm delving into MCU having started working through the timeline over the holidays. I have several ships I'm already invested in which is exciting. I am itching to write Doctor Who fic too, I have been for ages, I just haven't had chance to sit down and work on the ideas. I'm also eagerly awaiting the second season of Good Omens.

3. 'Writ Reads' - A multi-fandom rec list. On a similar theme to the above, I would like to do some more reccing this year. I'm not a consistent or super organised reccer so I have set myself a loose once a month target of reccing a selection of fics I have loved that month, likely to feature a raft of different fandoms, themes, ships...

4. Finish stuff. I have so many things to finish, from fics that got close but were abandoned when my muse took a nose dive, to belated gifts that I want to give to the giftees as soon as I can. That is going to be my main priority over January. I can't say too much about the specifics as a couple of unfinished WIPs (all HP) may well end up in anon fests if I can finish them in time and find a suitable home for them.

5. Have fun. That's really no. 1, perhaps, or maybe it's just a note to self.

That’s a no. One fanwork = one square crossed off.

Yes! We love crossposting, and you are absolutely allowed to do it, just as long as:

The other event is okay with it as well - not everyone is.

Your fill meets the minimum requirements for all events you’re using it for - eg 300 words for us, 300 for Tony Stark Bingo, 250 for Star Spangled Bingo = a minimum of 850 words.

Can I repost old fics?

Nope, sorry: anything posted for this event needs to be shiny and new.

Do I have to fill all my squares?

You can make as many or as few fills as you want. Whether it’s one, five, ten, or the whole card, that’s awesome! There is zero pressure here.

Every month during Round 5, we have a monthly challenge. At the start of the month, we will issue three prompts that usually have a connective theme. You can use one, two, or all three prompts along with a square from your bingo card and you will earn a badge created for the theme!

Monthly Adoptables

At the start of every month during Round 5, we will post a new set of adoptable prompts. They will be available to anyone all month, no claiming is needed. But you can only adopt and submit one prompt each month.

You can create almost anything you want to. The minimum requirements for each work are here:

What can I create for this event?

Fic and poetry: 300 words, unless you are specifically writing a drabble (exactly 100 words on ao3)

Art: 300x300 pixels if digital, 3”x3” if traditional

Moodboards: five images (+ optional blurb)

Playlists: eight songs + cover art

Rec lists: three fanworks + reasons why you’re reccing them

Podfic: ten minutes + clear permission from the author for you to use it for the bingo

Translations: the work it’s a translation of must fit the fic minimum requirements, whether it’s a new or a translation of an old one + clear permission from the author for you to use it for the bingo

Fanvids: 30 seconds

All other fanworks (gifsets, crafts, baked goods, edits, manips, anything else you can think of): as long as you think it’s complete and/or the best you can do right now, it counts!

Can I write in another language?

Absolutely!! Whether it’s because you want to try writing in a language you’ve been learning or because English isn’t your first language, we welcome non-English works.

Can I collaborate with someone else?

Yes! If you want to create with a friend (or acquaintance or arch-enemy, though we probably recommend against that one), you should feel free!

And if your collaborator is participating in the bingo as well, they can also use the collab to cross off a square.

There is one caveat to this: each collaborator has to meet the minimum requirements (your fic has to be at least 600 words if there’s two authors collabing, 900 if there’s three, etc)

Where do I post my fills?

We have a collection on ao3 (stuckybingo), or you can post on tumblr.

If you post here on tumblr, please tag us @stuckybingo.

We’ll share all works we know about here on tumblr, but the only way we know about them is if you fill out the fill submission form!

I’ll make you a customised 7 song playlist (cuz 7 is the strongest magical number ofc) on how you are feeling in regards to Valentine’s (fluffy, angsty or whatever)

The songs will mainly be in English but I might include other languages (let me know your preferences if you’re averse to that. And if you don’t want English, I can do Hindi and Punjabi for you too!)

100 Followers Celebration!!<3!!

We’ve hit over 100 followers recently!!!  I’m am so overwhelmed and touched and THANKFUL for this recent development on my blog.  I don’t know how I could ever properly tell you all how much you mean to me, how much the likes, reblogs, comments and interactions make my day!  In short, you’ve all stolen my heart and keep me writing.  You all are my angels, my friends, and mean so much to me so THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!  

So in celebration I’ve put together several things...

1) I’m opening requests!  If you want to send me a prompt or plot or anything to write you just let me know. The rules are:

You must include the character you want me to write for along with reader specifications (house, gender, plus size...etc..) or else I will chose to write the reader as neutral :)

I am currently writing for Harry Potter

No smut (not because I’m against it, ya gurl loves it, but I’m just not a very good smut writer lol.)

I don’t care if you send in a specific prompt or request, or maybe just a vague blurb, I’ll gladly write anything as long as I’m comfortable with it. (pretty much good with everything but smut and some triggering topics)

To Be So Lonely //S.B by @vogueweasley  THIS FIC IS SO AMAZING!  Also everything they write is just golden.  For this particular fic it is based off of the Harry Styles song To Be So Lonely (HS and HP fans unite!) This fic captures a beautiful relationship, wonderfully sad angst, lovely characters, and so much more! Whole blog is amazing!

@potter-imagines is just a lovely account for the Weasley Twins content.  I am obsessed with their fic Left Waiting At The Three Broomsticks!!!  Amazing writer!

MasterList for @ickle-ronniekins BECAUSE THEIR WRITING IS AMAZING!!!  They single-handly fed my Fred Weasley addiction this summer.  Truly just splendid and talented writing and a good blog to browse when you’re in the mood for the Weasley Twins.
