Case File Compendium - ch 55

Good God, these are getting longer and longer, I feel like the ghost of Leo Tolstoy, sans the beard, is possessing me.

This was hilarious! And I love that despite last night, HY does not get the balance of power permanently altered. He Yu is so very young. And underneath the madness and the rage and the violence, he still has that remnant insecurity and awkwardness that could go away with age.

If he could use a scalpel as well as he can use his tongue, XQC would be the premiere surgeon of the country. But this was brilliant! God, I love XQC so very much!

I wondered for a minute why XQC does not act more distraught and destroyed and then it occurred to me - he is literally incapable of it. This is the same person who saw mangled bodies of his parents as a kid and moved on, the same one who kept functioning when he thought the sole person he loved, his sister, was dead. And this is the same here. He already doesn’t care if he lives or dies, this won’t change that. He will do with the latest horror the same as he did with the rest of the horrors in his life - shove it in a small room in the back of his mind and padlock it, while smoking three packs in a row. It’s not healthy but it enables him to survive.

YESSSSSS! He Yu was clearly fooling himself when he was all “he is gonna hate me and this is great!” He is distraught at the thought of XQC hating him but what the hell else did you expect?! It’s like a teeny baby step on the long road of remorse and groveling MB is gonna stick him on.

YES!!!! Applause!!!! Regardless of what one thinks XQC did or didn’t do, nothing he could have ever possibly done could justify what He Yu did. Not to mention, he treated He Yu when he was his doctor to the best of his ability. (Whatever one thinks of their post-employment interactions, he was not his doctor any more.)

The other thing, I don’t think XQC is a therapist. He’s a psychiatrist. He was clearly there to monitor HY’s illness back way when but it’s to treat physical manifestations and similar. That is why so many of his interactions come from this place. Sure, he talked about HY reintegrating back into society but it wasn’t part of any specific structured therapy sessions, it was just his personal beliefs/conversations. HY needed a bona fide therapist for proper therapy. But his parents never got HY one because they only cared about him being controlled enough to not cause issues to them, they never cared about his well-being. Hell, they never bothered to get him ANY doctor once XQC left and HY was only 14. Because hey, he controls himself so who cares about mental trauma. They are the worst!

Oh God, I want to cosmically slap HY into next week. “You Honor, I drugged and raped a dude but that’s justified because I never got birthday cake as a kid.” I am imagining that as a defense in a court of law.

Yes, I am being snide and disingenuous and reductionist because He Yu’s issues are obviously way beyond that and are genuine and serious, but I have absolutely zero sympathy for a rapist telling his victim that he is the one actually wronged.

And then he says he wouldn’t tell the truth because HY couldn’t bear it.

And guess what? Last night has proven XQC right on all accounts - yes, XX should stay away from He Yu as should anyone who likes self-preservation. And yes, learning that things were hallucinations was something HY couldn’t bear (yes, it got aggravated by finding out people concealed that, but I don’t think reaction would have been in the realm of good even without that.)

I loved that bit so much and I love that He Yu was sooooo close and then wrecked it himself.

The thing is, I don’t think all of the “XQC didn’t see the strength/validity of He Yu’s feelings” is what it seems. I don’t think it’s because he’s paternalistic or weird or heartless. I think it’s a defense mechanism due to trauma. He refuses to see ANYONE’s feelings - hell, he refused his wife’s! I think once his parents were murdered, he locked his heart to survive and refused to allow anyone or anything is so as not to be hurt again. XX is the only exception and that is because she was grandfathered in, so to speak.

And then HY’s actions actually did manage to make it through to the armor. Only for He Yu’s other actions to slam that door shut and put an extra layer of protection on.

Ummm, there is nothing in these chapters that is convincing me that He Yu shouldn’t be locked up forever and instead should be allowed to be in human society.

In general, I keep wondering how XQC will get past chapter 52-53 stuff and my brain breaks. Despite the vast amounts of noncon in 2ha, it is a much easier case there. CWN of main storyline never truly had to - he kept thinking his flashbacks were not real memories but weird dreams and by the time he realized they weren’t, he learned about the flower shortly after and how none of TXJ’s actions were really his fault in close succession. CWN -.5 also learned that near the end of the 0.5 timeline and that is what allowed him to love even that warped 0.5 version of Mo Ran and to tell him to forgive himself before CWN 0.5 died. And when we look at whatever went on with CWN and zombie Taxian Jun, leaving aside that CWN himself was in part looking for the man he loved and lost and being with this tormented, destroyed, controlled version of him was the most he could have, zombie TXJ was not even a proper person to be held responsible - he was a sliver of a soul, mad and controlled and with memory and personality lacunae the size of Australia. And of course the fact that he is the way he is because he sacrificed himself for CWN hangs over everything. We don’t even need to get into “and CWN loves him” to get why for CWN this is really a non-issue.

Despite a much healthier dynamic, Yuwu is interestingly closer. Because Mo Xi x Gu Mang first time is dubcon at best. But even there, it’s a very old-school romance novel set up of “gentleman overcome by his feelings can’t control himself” (and I am not going to get into the fact that Gu Mang’s life is so devoid of love that it’s matter of fact for him to look past the method of expression and fixate instead of the feelings being shown however dysfunctionally, because it would make me depressed.) But it’s basically, intense and terrible at intractions bear child Mo Xi expressing his love/lust/obsession/admiration/devotion to Gu Mang even if in an insane way and Gu Mang is under no mistake than that is what it is and they are in mutual love with GM having the emotional upper hand in every interaction this included (in fact, when he defects some years later, one of the regrets he feels is that he was always more crucial/paramount to Mo Xi than other way around.)

But CFC - forget 2ha, it’s not even Yuwu set-up! He Yu does what he does explicitly to humiliate and destroy and hurt XQC and makes no bones about it - saying things to humiliate him throughout, acting in such a way etc etc. It’s not even a sex version of the infamous Russian proverb “if he beats you means he loves you,” it’s just rape as an act of revenge and power and degradation. (And yes, as a reader, you are aware that the reason HY glommed onto that specifically is because without getting it at all, he’s been obsessed romantically/sexually with XQC for years so he’s acting out. But there is no way XQC can get anything like that from it and even if he somehow magically could when even HY himself doesn’t get it, expressing interest through humiliating and hurting someone on purpose to hurt and humiliate is a whole other level from something like Yuwu.)

So how?!

Secrets of the Darkened Seas

Welcome to Chapter 6! I would like to say a special thank you to my best friend and co-author Olivia ( @asunshinepuff ) for inviting me to work on this story with her. As you may have noticed, we have decided to change on how we release the chapters of our story. We will be alternating from my blog to @asunshinepuff‘s blog.

These chapters contain many original characters created by Olivia and myself. All credit for our creations goes to each other for our respective characters because we have both worked so hard to bring these character to life and I would never dare to take credit for any of Olivia’s characters.

As always there is mermaid lore hidden within the storyline. The included lore on different types of merfolk will be taken from the book “The Secret World of Mermaids” by Francine Rose. We are taking no credit for her work. The different types of mermaids will be explained later so don’t worry. We have also taken the liberty of creating some of own original types of merfolk.

Now without further adieu!

Chapter 6: The Return of the White Sea Serpent

Min-Jun glared at the sleeping form of Sirius Black. He had returned to the ship in the dead of night, Quinn, Opal and Remus all quickly rushed to explain what had occurred earlier that night. And now, they waited for the Captain’s Verdict.

“Let’s just throw him overboard.” Remus suggests simply. His arms were crossed as he glared at the unconscious man.

“To throw him overboard would require him to be alive, Remus.” Min-Jun spoke.

“He doesn’t have to be.” Remus smiled.

Min-Jun shook his head in amusement with his young ward. He looked back to Sirius.

“No, he came looking for his young brother.” He stood from his seat, looking to Remus and Quinn. “I will give him the antidote, I wish to question him. He may be the key to finally be rid of those Black Pirates.”

“I agree.” Quinn replied with a curt nod. “We should keep an eye on him though, if he came here solely for Regulus, he might attempt to kidnap his brother himself.” He continued, leaning against the wooden wall of the infirmary.

“Tha ítan anóito na apagágei ton aderfó tou.” Would be foolish to abduct his brother. Opal mumbled under her breath, prompting Quinn to give her a look with raised eyebrows. Really?

“And that task falls to you, Remus.” Min-Jun looked at the younger man. “He will be under your care. Do your best not to strangle him.” Without another word, the Captain reached into his coat, pulling a small thin vial from his pocket. He pried Sirius’ jaw open, poured the contents into his mouth, and rubbed his neck to force Sirius to swallow.

“It will take some time before it starts taking effect. He should be fine at noon later today.”

With nothing else left to say, the captain left them to it.

Remus was not happy with being on babysitting duty. He didn’t mind watching Regulus and Tadase because they were actual children, not an annoying over egotistical adult. Tadase and Regulus were sweet boys, Sirius just made Remus want to smash his face with a hammer. So in order to calm himself, Remus went in search of the boys because they always somehow managed to calm him down.

“Your brother is here Regulus,” Remus spoke softly. Tadase rested in his lap, playing with the tassel on the hilt of his sword. Remus looked at Regulus, the boy tensed up.

“...” Regulus lowered his head down, avoiding Remus’ eyes.

“Do you want to see-”

“NO!” Regulus shouted. Tadase startled, covering his ears at the older child’s scream.

Remus gawked back at the boy, frowning lightly. “Regulus, don’t shout. You startled Tadase.”

Chastised, Regulus looked down to his lap. Remus sighed softly pausing for a brief moment, “Alright, if he asks to see you, I’ll keep him away.”

“He knows I’m here?” Regulus’ eyes widen like discs.

“He came here for you.” Remus replied with a nod.

“...why?” Regulus frowned as if he had eaten something sour.

“Because he loves you.”

Regulus snapped his head to Brielle, Remus also looked to the older mermaid, she was sitting on a chair, her lessons in walking were slow but steady. Her black hair had been tied into a braid by Opal, she wore a simple flowy blue dress, her feet were covered in flats with lace tied around her ankles. Her dark eyes watched Regulus’ stormy blue ones.

“No he doesn’t,” Regulus glared, “He left me alone…”

Brielle tilted her head, her eyes shifted to silver. “Sometimes, people have to leave… but they come back. And he does love you.”

“How do you know? You never even met him.” Brielle smiled, as if she knew a secret Regulus didn’t. She montined her hand for Regulus to come closer. “I do know, do you want to know how?”

Regulus eyed her skeptically, eventually the young boy nodded his head. He walked over to the mermaid. She easily lifted the boy to her lap. Her silver eyes only seemed to intensify. Slowly, her clawed hands inched toward the sides of his face.

“Because Sirius and I are the same.”

Regulus frowned. “No, you're nice, Sirius is mean.”

Brielle shook her, gently she pulled Regulus’ head to her chest, “Listen.”

Regulus was confused for a moment before he heard the tell tale sound of a heart beat. “Your heart?”

Brielle smiled, gently pulling him back to look at his eyes. “Sirius and I, share the same heart.”

Regulus frowned, “I don’t understand.”

Brielle only smiled, “We love the same. We are first borns, and we love our younger siblings fiercely.”

“No, he left me!”

“I leave Tadase to hunt, our mother was not kind, our father was killed by our mother. Tadase had no mother, so I became what he needed.” She rubbed Regulus’ head gently. “Sirius is young, very young, he could not raise you yet, so he left. But his heart never left you.”

“Why did he leave me?” Regulus’ eyes began to water.

Brielle pulled him into another hug. “Because sometimes, older siblings are not strong enough to protect their siblings, Sirius knew this. So he left to get stronger, so he could come back for you and raise you. Because he loves you.”

Regulus wasn’t entirely convinced. “... But how do you know?”

“Because I did the very same.” Regulus pulled back, his face angry. “Why?! Why did you leave Tadase?!”

“Our mother is powerful, and I was still too young, but I came back. Because if I didn’t he would not survive. Our mother does not love us.” Brielle responded patiently.

“Why did your mama not love you?” He questioned.

“Maybe because mother and father were different species, maybe because we looked like our father more. I do not know.”

Regulus looked down, biting his lip. “That sounds like Mama… and Papa…they don’t like Sirius… or me…” He rubbed his eyes, sobbing as he looked up to the mermaid. “Why, why do they not love us?”

Brielle’s gaze only softened. “Some cannot love, but Sirius and I, we have so much love to give to our brothers,” She paused, brushing his hair back, “Tadase forgave me, and he is safe in my love,” she tilted Regulus’ chin up, “Forgive your brother, and you will feel just how much love he has to give. He will never leave you again.”

Regulus wailed, his shoulder shook as he sobbed harshly, Brielle simply rubbed his back as she sang her lullaby for the boys.

Remus watched in silent study. He knew mermaids were in tune with the emotions of others. And if what Brielle said was true, then perhaps there was more to Sirius Black than being a complete idiot. After listening to the lullaby for a few minutes, Remus left the boys with Brielle as he went back to check on Sirius, only to find the raging idiot shouting at the crew demanding for his brother.

Sirius somehow had gotten a hold of a sword and was holding one of the crew hostage. “I want to see Regulus!” His skin had returned to a healthy pale tone, his eyes were focused and his strength clearly returned.

Remus felt a headache coming on. A big one. He sighs, “If you think holding one of my crewmates hostage is a good tact to see your brother, you are a bigger fool than I thought.”

Sirius glared. “You, who do you think you are keeping my brother away from me?”

“Who do I think I am? Someone who cares about your brother despite only knowing the boy for nearly a week.” He simply retorts.

“Oh like I am supposed to believe that. The Blacks have been chased after by the navy for years, you really think I’m going to believe you’re not holding him for leverage, or for a reward?” Sirius glared.

Remus glared in return, “You should be thankful you’re even alive. That poison is fast acting. I’d mind your words.”

Sirius gave a humorless laugh, “Oh like I’d expect you to understand. I would travel to the pits of hell for him.” He pressed the blade closer to the crew man’s neck. “Where is he?”

Before Remus could retort, a melodious song reached their ears. The crew men's eyes began to droop, falling into a trance.

Quinn stumbled, his hand reaching for the railing to keep himself upright, Opal slowly lowered to the ground, Sirius’ grip on the dagger loosened, falling to the deck.

Remus blinked in confusion, he turned to the source of the song and saw Brielle standing on deck, holding onto the wall to steady herself, she was singing everyone to sleep.

Sirius collapsed, Quinn fell unconscious. Opal layed down and fell asleep on a bag of rice. Brielle walked closer to Remus, who remained unaffected since he was a mer as well.

Min-Jun walked towards him, glaring at Brielle. “Could you not?”

Brielle eyed Min-Jun in puzzlement, but did stop her song. Min-Jun walked to Sirius. Remus only watched Min-Jun in bewilderment.

Why hadn’t the song affected The Captain of the Dragon’s Pearl?

Seon Adventures Episode 31: From The River, From The Lake

A day has passed since the party bested the highwayman Stone Giant (Dave).

They find themselves now in Bavorum, where most of the group had their first encounter with each other... and the Death Cult. And many people travel with a strange pace form one entrance point of Bavorum, to the next, leading them to Lake Stren...

With careful perception from the group, they take note that the people transitioning from entering to exiting the town through this particular route walk absentmindedly, as though not of their own volition. Their gazes, distant, vacant.

It is through this insight that Belli takes to approaching a familiar looking dwarven woman, attempting to shake her free from whatever’s keeping her mind clouded. Alas, even with Malak’s help, they don’t manage to free her, as she carries on...

With a message of the activity being sent to Layla Duststone, head of the Darksbane Army and a hope that the soldiers she had sent to the lake would do what they can, they deduce that the time draws short and so the party makes a temporary split. With most of them taking to the road, Belli goes to acquire the services of the town guards.

After a brief tiff with the half-elven receptionist beside the head of the town’s guard, Belli reunites with said head of the guard. Shenanigans ensue as Belli goes through the motions of trying to convince the dwarven man that there is trouble. That people are under mind control and heading like sheep for the slaughter.

It takes some time, but after pointing him to and encouraging an investigation of one such person, under control, the captain of the guard requiesses 20% of his guards to help. Among them a spunky Halfling lady named Anka, who is all for equal representation as Belli rallies the “troops”, on horse back.

Together, the riders travel to the lake.

Where they reunite with the rest of the group.

And it donns on them just how fucked they are in this situation. It doesn’t take a high perception to note just how many people are gathering. Hundreds. And still more in coming.

It feels... It feels so overwhelming.

Lake Stren. A place that at one point represented a moment of respite for The Cultbusters in the days before they even named themselves, was now a place of dread. As countless sacrifices were arriving.

And among them, among the sea of people that surround this lake, we see Kit.

Kit, in her true appearance walks vacantly towards the lake.

For Jun, a pleasant surprise to see another Changeling so soon after the club in Crystalgate. For Belli, a moment of horror as she realizes what could happen to her.

The worried half-orc carries her over to the rest of the party with fair ease, as she has the strength advantage on the rogue. And attempts to shake her awake at the very least.

Luck’s eyes turn to the lake and he scans. Mournimar sees him first, Dak. Standing in the center of Stren. Unmoving from his position.

Deciding on a course of action, Luck gives instructions to the rest. To do what they can to shake the people around them awake. Guards to assist. Apply pressure, if needed.

Then he heads for Dak.

As Malak tries to help Belli in snapping Kit out of it, Jun tries to see if there’s anyone casting any spells around them. Someone that could be the point of origin for the spell.

But no such luck there.

As the group try to coralle people away, they soon go back to their spots as the four try to get to more people.

In the meantime, Luck approaches Dak and tries to shake him awake, after words don’t seem to get the job done.

As that doesn’t work either, the disguised tiefling does the only thing he has left in the repertoir that isn’t using his weapons.

He sends Dak to Dick Kick City.

And that-that actually does the job!

As the poor cleric aches in pain from the rude awakening, Luctan explains to him the situation he finds himself in. Then turns to the rest of the party and tells them to go for the crotch kicking as well.

And with Dak proclaiming that he has a plan, moving to get on with said plan, the party goes into action.

For every 10 people they hit, 2 wake up.

And time passes. And more people come. 2 hours.

2 hours later, the sun goes down. Down behind the marshy swamp. Down behind the hills and trees. And silence overcomes the area.

An eerie silence. The kind you only get to hear on a night of extreme violence...

And then? The silence is eventually interrupted.

Just a few notice at first

Low retching. Like a dry heaving sort of sound from the people that have gathered around the lake. And then a few more join in. It’s not a lot of people at first... Not the majority, anyways. But this is what happens as people begin to hack and spew fluids from their mouths.

Malak, specifically can tell in the most decorated of priest robes that start heaving and fall down to their knees, heaving. And a few more start doing the same.

Kit begins to shiver. And Belli has enough. She takes Kit and brings her to a tree far from the lake, to which she ties her lady.

It is in this moment that Malak makes a split second decision. Something overcomes him and with no other choice in sight, Malak grabs his axe and swings it at the neck of the closest charmed priest. He decapitates him instantly.

Blood spews int othe water, the head dunking, then bobbing in front of the collapsing corpse.

Blood gushes from the neck and into the lake, while the guards start rushing the retching people and dragging them back.

While she doesn’t stop shivering, Kit doesn’t seem to do what happens next to the remaining charmed folk. To these... followers of Fornas.

As we drag as many as we can. Those that are on their hands and knees barf and hurl blood. And gore. Their insides become their outsides in a vicious bloody waterfall of many angles.

The Cultbusters do as best as they can. Luck runs. He casts Prestidigitation at the blood and gore and does so multiple times, trying to diminish the never ending stream of it upon the water, Belli uses her Mage Hand, dragging people away scooping the gore away.. Mournimar carries as many as he can. Tries to restrain as many as he can. But he isn’t strong enough to do much else.

Jun takes initiative as Malak did and uses a spell. A Burst of Swords surrounds her as she aims at the people around her. Malak cuts people down. Vicious,crazed, pained.

Belli cracks and casts Shatter on a group of folk, hoping she doesn’t full on kill them, but knock them back. Bu the snapping of bones and sinnew says otherwise.

It’s horrible.

As the moon comes up. All this is just horrible.

Something starts drippling in the middle of the lake. Clay slides in and gathers in the middle, until the water starts to boil and this HUGE! Creature of blood and clay drags itself out of the center of the lake. And the hundreds of people, who were heaving?

They just drop.

This thing.

This massive monster.

Larger than the Stone Giant itself?!

It turns to look at us.

Those, who have been trying to undo what it’s been working on.

And it comes at us.

Roll for Initiative.

Mournimar is the closest in sight. Said Mournimar backs away as fast he can and takes a hit.. But manages to shrug off whatever was going to happen next.

As consequence for the attack upon him, Mournimar sets off his Hellish Rebuke, setting fire to the freakish monstrocity. And then, with a quick trigger finger, Mournimar fires his Sparrow Arrows, after setting a Hunter’s Mark on this vile creation’s frame.

His arrows strike true.

Using this opportunity of distraction, Jun moves in next. She calls forth inky black tentacles that wrap themselves around the bastard, this shithead, this peace of FUCKING SHIT THAT SUCKED THE LIFE OUT OF THSE PEOPLE!

But it frees itself with some ease.

And turns it’s attention on the changeling and the disguised tiefling beside her.

One smack for Jun. One for Luck. Both manage to shrug off whatever the thing that should not be tried to infect them with.

It reaches into the lake and more blood pulls up form it’s arm and starts swinging it’s arms faster and it’s now hasted! It’s attention still on the one it smacked last. It hits Luck again. He resists again.

But the fury that overcomes the tiefling burns with a powerful fire that scorches the limb that attacked him.

And on Luck’s very turn he points a finger at the clay and lake floor pecks of this dark creation and impales it with a Grade 1 Guiding Bolt.

Belli’s next as she tries to polymorph the ground around it into something unfavorable for it. But that doesn’t seem to work. She attempts to mock it.

“You look like what crawled out of a frat house’s toilet.”

But it also somehow resists that.

With the thing having used up all it’s reaction time, the bard moves back to a safe distance.

Malak comes next. On his turn... Malak, raging, aching, fearing, manic, remembering, rehashing, charging... Malak goes full on Kamehameha pose and shoots a 4th level Guiding Bolt! at the creature, blowing off a huge chunk off. Geting the full attention of the monster.

Malak doesn’t move. He stands his ground as Mournimar deals signifigant damage of his own with his special arrows, impacting the body of the creature.

The final arrow shot takes a piece from it’s shoulder. It’s just falling apart like playdough at the rightcheous fury and attack of the Cultbusters.

On Jun’s turn... She runs up and uses a Curse. She attacks with her Gambler’s blade for a good amount of damage. And itt’s attention shifts again. The water around the lake was bubbling and we see a similar pattern, as though it’s boiling in it’s chest.

After some... thought?! It goes for Malak, bludgeoning him with it’s accursed limbs. And it’s infection comes onto Malak, who feels his body slug, some. His vitality draining some from his body.

A second hit comes.

Luck intervenes. The very nature of his lucky existence, his presence causes the large fucker to miss Malak with the second strike! Which causes the freakshow to look back from the human to the tiefling.

And Luck gets smacked again for his attack, blood flowing from his nose as his helmet gets flung off. The infection doesn’t seem to be passed on as Luctan glares and calms his breathing for the moment, his newer wounds healing up, if slightly.

Pulling at his greatsword, Luctan activates Steel Wind Strike.

And misses.

He surges on. And swings again and again, but the damn creature is just too fast. He keeps missing by half an inch!

Belli’s up next.

As Luck moves to get in the way of the monster, in case it attacks Malak again, Belli gets the fighter’s consent and casts Polymorph on him.

Transformation central.

Transmodification central.

Are you ready? Can you feel it?

Luctan becomes a fucking T-Rex!

As Luctan Roars in defiance of the monster, Belli inspires Malak, who along with Jun repositions, due to the change of shape and size of the tiefling fighter.

The now inspired Malak casts Spiritual Weapon and smashes the clay and blood creation from the side with his Spiritual Axe.

Bonus action.

Lich Slap.

Even further damage. This thing is, by this point, beginning to crumble. Barely keeping itself in one piece.

Mournimar makes his move. Figuratively and literally. Dashing from the right of the party to a mound of rocks on their right, he switches from a Hunter’s Mark to a Zephyr Strike. Hit and a miss. The thing is staggering.

Jun’s turn!

Hex. The creature becomes weaker in it’s physicallity.

Jun, who would then move for cover under the standing frame of Luctan, would grip her blade tight in hand.

Booming Blade + Blood Curse.

Combine that with two attacks of her blade.

And then it happens!

With a sharp eye she evaluates the creature’s very state of being.

Running out of cover, she starts climbing it from an angle and reaches to the shoulders, on top and the open wound up there… the blood from the creature starts to rapidly flow. She stabs it and the spell explodes. And this-This Goddamn thing’s brains, if it had them, explode back behind it, splashing into the water below.

As the body begins to break apart, Luck leans forward so she can land on his head. Once Jun comes down from the T-Rex Tiefling’s body, said T-Rex starts to viciously stomp on the remains that turn into clay and gory mush under his saurian feet.

Belli lets him blow off some steam in this form for a while, before ending her concentration on the spell. Once luck drops back, she turns to Kit, who no longer shivered, but seemed to have passed out from all that stress.

While Luck carried on stabbing at the “body”, he’d soon be stopped by Mournimar and Belli, who’d hold him in a hug.

Jun would compliment Malak’s initiative, before said cleric would scan the area.

He’d check on the people. Most of them are dead. Those they dragged back seem to be alive, if badly wounded. Anka and Dak are alright, as are the rest of the guards.

Belli sends at Anka to get people to help with the bodies. There’s a pause and then she hears. “Oh shit, you can’t see me nodding! Yeah, yeah, I’ll get to it.”

The Death Cleric would then head for the nearest body of a cleric. Crouch.

And then cast “Speak To The Dead.”

5 questions time.

As the eyes open, Malak asks... and gets answers:

1. “What is the last thing you remember?” – “The temple. I was cleaning.”

2 .What Temple?” – “The Temple in Kaelum.” That’s in the south east, on the main road from the front lines to Crystalgate.

3. “Did you know that this would happen?” – “What would happen?” He doesn’t know.

4. Do you remember anything troubling happening in or around the temple?”- “No, the gifts were plentiful. Nothing was wrong.”

5.Who were the gifts from?” – “The… Fornas, d’uh? Are you dumb? Do you have a brain?”

The spell would end and the spirit would take off.

But Malak wasn’t done.

He’d cast the spell at a second body, one with a rough cockney accent.

(Laughter happens, because it sounded like he was interrogating Gromi from the Icespire game, X’D)

1. “What were the gifts from Fornas you recently Received?” – “All the good turns of fate and luck, my friend. The fortunate landing, the flip of the coin. That is gift.”

2. “What is the last thing you remember?” – “I went to take a nap.”

3. Anything troubling happen in and around the temple?” – “No, Morrum’s been quiet.”

4. “Have you received any requests from Fornas?” – “Fucking Karaoke, what do you think? We just do what we always do; we clean, we keep the place clean for people coming.”

5.“Does anyone in the cult of Fornas practice Necromancy?”- “I mean, it’s not really encouraged. But people do what they gotta do.”

( Then Perish. )

With that done, the stiffens anew, the soul takes off.

Luctan stands and heads for Dak.

All the while...

The others inspect the mass that was once attacking them in a solid form.

There is a slight pulse coming from inside the clay-gloop. Malak and Belli and Mournimar choose to dig. In the center of the creature there’s ...

A sort of whitely glowing blue bundle. It glimmers in different parts of the moonlight they experience. Thin, irredecent material. Unwrapped.

Inside there are three treasures of note. First. Scale mail armor. Weirdly irridecent light armor. Belli identifies it as “Etherial Armor”. It glows in the colors of the rainbow and gives protection to the more dexterous of folk.

( Ethereal Armor: Light armor made with a thin, iridescent material. It glimmers in all the colours of the rainbow and glows ever so slightly. Strong as steel, it grants the wearer an AC of 14+DEX)

There’s also... This, like. Dried up hand. Ew. With really sharp claws. Definitely not human and doesn’t match any of the bodies in the area.

There’s a large steel chain attached to it. Attached to 30ft hempen rope. Identify. It’s called “The Creeping Claw.”

( Creeping Claw - A dried goblin’s hand bearing wickedly sharp claws. A large steel chain link penetrates the base of the palm and is attached to a 30 foot long hempen rope. A creature can cover the hand in their own freshly shed blood (1HP damage) which causes the hand to animate. The creature can then mentally control the severed limb and command it to move and interact with objects. The hand walks on the tops of its fingers or climb 5ft up per round through use of claws. The hand can perform simple tasks, can exert ten pounds of force and is as dexterous as the creature controlling it. Requires more blood after 5 minutes.)

Mournimar uncovers a great axe. Gold trim upon silver frame... Identify gives off a name, The Fated Potential. There is writing on it that most of the party can’t uncover, except for Malak.

Jun seems to recall a story, from olden times in this region. About how the weapon came to be from some sort of union between a Celestial and a Fiend. An Angel and a Devil.

One of Fornas’ angels. It seems to make sense then, as to why Fornas servants were tied to what happened here.

So brutally tied...

She checks with Malak on whether he knows what we do with this item. Malak finds the axe interesting. He likes the axe. And will investigate it further. Should it not be cursed, he will hold onto it.

That and the Creeping Claw. Which he puts in a bag, along with the axe. As for the armor? We’ll see.

While this was happening, Belli would contact Ficus and update him, in the middle of a job, as to what had happened.

As Malak plans to bury the bodies, we come to a close.

If Phoenix or Maya died instead of Mia, that would be a very sad AU to the entire series as a whole. Who knows what that would have done to her.

Well, I did write an AU where Maya got murdered by Redd White. I’m not going to act like my fic is the definitive of how Turnabout Sisters would have gone if Maya was the victim but I do think that it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that things would have gone that way. Mia for sure would have figured out that Redd White was the murderer and would have gone after him, and do anything in her power to take him down.

As for what happens to Mia after The Reversal of Sisters, well, here’s how the rest of the franchise would have gone at least in my view:

Mia finds out that Will Powers, the actor of the Steel Samurai was arrested for murder. Recognizing that name as the show that Maya loved so much, she takes the case because she knows that’s what Maya would want her to do.

Phoenix insists on tackling Turnabout Goodbyes on his own as he desperately wants to help his friend out. He loses because Maya isn’t around to call Lotta out on the validity of her testimony, and Edgeworth is found “Guilty” of murder. As a side note, Von Karma disappears and is never heard from again. Afterwards, Phoenix slips into a deep depression and Mia consoles him, the two comforting each other due to them both losing someone they care about deeply.

Mia ends up defending Lana at the request of Ema Skye. Lana is much more open to the idea of having Mia as her lawyer but still acts similarly cold and distant towards her as she did Phoenix. Mia, with Ema’s help, manages to defend Lana successfully, though she still goes to jail. At the end, Lana and Mia promise to stay in touch during the former’s prison sentence through writing letters.

The Kurain case never happens as there’s no Maya for Morgan to plot to get rid of. Instead, Dr. Grey goes nuts and tries to murder Mimi Miney who is disguised as Ini. He is arrested for attempted murder. The reason I think Grey would go after “Ini” is because he would want to take vengeance upon the sister of the woman who had in a sense, ruined his business. I also don’t think Mimi would have gone after Grey had he not suggested the channeling honestly.

The Lost Turnabout and Turnabout Big Top would have been taken by Mia. She offers both cases to Phoenix, but he’s still depressed after losing Edgeworth. She does manage to convince him to stand in with her during trial.

Mia would have no reason to take Farewell, My Turnabout. In actuality, I think that Matt Engarde’s case would have been taken by a public defender as everyone else is convinced of his guilt. The public defender loses the case and Engarde is found “Guilty. And as an added bonus, the public defender’s body is found the next day but nobody knows if their death was a murder or a suicide. You could argue that maybe Mia would have taken Matt’s case, but I’m not so sure. Engarde looked rather “Guilty” from the onset and if it wasn’t for DeKiller, I’m not so sure Phoenix would have taken it either…without coercion from Maya.

Diego wakes up in August 2018. Mia, scared of losing him again, proposes to him very soon after he wakes up. The two of them marry and Phoenix is the man of honor.

Soon afterwards, Diego joins the Fey & Co. Law Offices as a third lawyer.

Phoenix, inspired by Diego’s return to law, starts taking cases again, but starts off slow with simple hit-and-run and assault cases. He doesn’t take up the case revolving around the murder at KB security (Diego does), but does take up the murder at Tres Bien which goes much differently than it does in canon. This is because he isn’t as popular in this universe so Furio Tigre can’t impersonate him to get Maggey convicted of murder.

Diego is Phoenix’s aide during the Gramarye trial and tells him to watch out for that forged diary page. With his help, Phoenix is able to avoid being disbarred. However, Zak still disappears after the conclusion of the trial (because why wouldn’t he honestly?) and Phoenix still adopts lil’ Trucy.

As a side note, because AAI and AAI2 require the presence of Edgeworth, the smuggling ring and the Mastermind are never caught for their crimes. Actually come to think of it, the Mastermind actually WOULD be put in jail, but for a murder they never actually committed.

Turnabout Visitors ends up going differently since it requires Edgeworth to have the room he has in canon. If Jacques was able to get Edgeworth’s room, he might not end up needing to murder Buddy after all. On the other hand, Rhoda would be accused of murdering Akbey, Lauren would be accused of murdering her father, and Kay would be accused of murdering Coachen. I don’t know who would have been accused of murdering Ka-Shi-Nou though.

The fake president is never discovered and SS-5 is never resolved. Blaise, Patricia, and Di-Jun-Huang never face retribution for their crimes.

The UR-1 trial goes a bit differently than it does in canon. Since a Fey & Co. defense attorney may have taken young Simon’s case, it’s possible that they’re able to prove his innocence and demonstrate the existence of a “phantom” killer. He would have still been arrested on tampering with the crime scene but on a lighter sentence due to trying to protect a young Athena. Make no mistake though, Simon totally adopts Athena once he gets out of the slammer. Whether or not she becomes a defense attorney still is up in the air but I think it’s likely. She might get inspired by watching Simon in court and want to face off against him in court.

Because the UR-1 trial goes differently than it does in canon and Phoenix is never disbarred, the dark age of the law never truly starts.

Apollo ends up working for the Fey & Co. Law Offices instead of Kristoph. I’m not sure how exactly AJ would have gone down. I think Kristoph would still have murdered Shadi and Turnabout Corner and Turnabout Serenade may gone down like in canon. Whether or not Kristoph is caught for murdering Shadi…is a different story.

Ema also doesn’t grow up to be a grumpy bear detective but probably is still bitter about not getting her dream job.

For DD, I can see 5-2, 5-3, and 5-DLC going the same just with Simon acting in a different manner since he was never convicted of Metis’ murder and as such, doesn’t have the lingering threat of death hanging over his head. I don’t think that Bobby and Simon knew each other before the latter got convicted so it’s probably a different detective working those cases. Unless the Phantom kills that guy and somehow manages to manipulate Simon into thinking the other detective just simply quit…

The Khu’rain cases in SOJ likely don’t happen because none of the Fey & Co. defense attorneys have any real reason to travel there. 6-2, 6-4, and 6-DLC might still happen but with different lawyers working those cases.

As for the sibling reveal, well, like in canon, it still hasn’t happened yet. That’s mainly because it’s really not up to any of the lawyers to decide when Lamiroir will let Trucy and Apollo know of their heritage, Although, it might be a bit sooner since Apollo doesn’t go to Khu’rain in this version.

Phoenix never finds out the truth about Dahlia. As a result, he probably stays single for the rest of his life. He almost definitely would have trust issues if he ever got into a relationship again.

Lastly, Morgan receives a call from Mia about Maya’s murder. She decides to use Maya’s death to her advantage and tells Pearl a couple hours later that Mystic Maya had contacted her personally and told her that she never wanted to see her or Pearl ever again. Pearl is inconsolable at first and refuses to believe that her beloved cousin would ever do or say such a thing. However, over time, as Pearl grows older and Maya never returns, she begins to take Morgan’s word for it. Meanwhile, Morgan does her part to ensure that Pearl never finds out the truth and murders anyone who threatens to try.

Pearl becomes Master as a result in 2021, she doesn’t receive the Master’s Talisman from Misty and is instead given a new one upon courtesy of her mother (I don’t think we ever learn if new Master’s Talismans are made when a person becomes Master. I’m pretty sure they aren’t passed down though). By the time she’s 18, she’s blocked the memory of her cousins out of hatred towards them for leaving the family. Misty never goes out of hiding out of fear that her sister might kill her if she tries to reach out to Pearl. She and Larry are still master and student though.

Pearl does go for training in Khu’rain but it’s unknown if she stays with the Inmees like Maya does in canon.

This at least, is an outline of how it could have gone. Things almost certainly would have been very different if Phoenix had been murdered. He would never have been the lawyer he is today, etc. Maya and Mia probably would be working together to try to put Redd away, so that’s a fun thought for an AU.

Seungkwan drabble. Extra fluffy. Secret Relationship revealed.

Anon requested a scenario “where the reader is dating a member without the rest of 17 knowing but they come over to the dorm after a really bad day and just start cuddling them on the couch without even caring that the boys are all there watching a movie or something. Extra fluffy please ❤️”

Your secret relationship with Seungkwan has been quite a success so far. Neither of you are entirely sure why it seems so important to keep it a secret: perhaps just to avoid the teasing, perhaps to make sure you’re completely certain of each other before you get others involved in the relationship, since it’s pretty much guaranteed that they’ll go crazy and get invested as soon as they find out.

There’s also something fun about the sneaking around - the quiet giggling in corners and the private glances you share - even though it would be silly to keep up such a secret solely for a little thing like that.

The rest of Seventeen know you two are close, of course. Seungkwan has been your best friend for as long as you’ve been hanging out with them all. And their awareness of your close relationship has resulted in a lot of teasing over that time.

Somehow, magically, a few of the more emotionally observant members (Jun, Jeonghan, and Minghao) managed to work out you had a crush on him from day one. You still don’t know how. And they quickly spread the news around the rest of the boys (though they never betrayed you by telling Seungkwan). Since then, they’ve all made it their mission to try convincing you to confess. Every time the topic comes up they insist that they know he likes you back and there should be no fear in approaching him (though they never quite betray him by telling you that he has also directly admitted it, only saying they are pretty sure he does and why don’t you ask him, Y/N?).

The prodding and poking still hasn’t stopped, of course, since they don’t know you two finally got together. They don’t know about the bold explosion of courage on Seungkwan’s part and the kiss in the empty mirrored practice room and the pact to not tell anyone.

They don’t know that both of you admitted to having liked each other this whole time and being too scared. They don’t know that you realized they’ve been trying to make you notice the obvious from the very beginning, getting less and less subtle as time passes. They don’t know how you laughed about the whole situation and kissed again.

In fact, they don’t know anything. And you’re very impressed that they haven’t caved and become traitors, considering how frustrated they seem at the two of you for apparently being too scared to confess. It’s almost funny to watch them get so highly strung now that you have less emotional angst of your own.

And still, the teasing continues, and you brush it off with the same flustered reaction as always, letting them roll their eyes and tell you there’s no need to be scared. Letting them run over the same arguments of what could possibly go wrong??? as they attempt to convince you to ask him out. Each time, you pretend to be uncertain. Then later, when Seungkwan walks you home, you swap stories of their latest attempts to convince each of you separately, and then you kiss in your doorway for a while before he leaves you, giddy with the excitement of the secret and his beautiful smile.

But then comes the Bad Day. The Bad Day to end all Bad Days.

You don’t think you’ve ever had a worse day. And that’s saying something. So as soon as you get home, despite being so exhausted you want to fall into bed, you dump your bag of stuff and go right back out the door again, taking your phone to text Seungkwan as you walk toward the Seventeen dorm like a homing pigeon.

What are you doing right now? You ask him, with a little sad face following.

About to watch a movie with the members. Are you okay?????? he replies.

You consider his message for a moment, type out a couple of admittances of your bad day, and then delete them, until you finally settle on one question, not wanting to talk over text right now. Wanting to see him in person. To feel the soft warmth of him against you.

How important is it that the other members don’t know we’re dating?

He takes a moment to reply.

Not very important at all really. Why?

I’m on my way to the dorms. Save me a space on the couch?

Of course, he says, with three red heart emojis. And then your phone buzzes a few more times, probably him asking for clarification, but your soul feels too weighed down to check them, and you power on, the dorms finally in sight.

Bumzu, Woozi’s favorite co-music-writer, is leaving when you get there, so you don’t need to knock and wait for someone to answer the door. He lets you inside.

“Hi, Y/N!” he says cheerfully, and then sees your sad face. “Are you okay?”

“I will be soon.” you say. “I’m just going to watch a movie with the boys. Have they started?”

“Yeah, but only just,” he says, nodding his head toward the direction of the room they’re in. “I was dropping some sheet music to Jihoon, but I decided to leave rather than stay and watch, so they were pressing play right as I left them.”

“I’ll go join them then,” you say.

“Alright,” Bumzu agrees. “Good to see you, Y/N. Hope you feel better after your movie.”

You manage a smile. “Thanks. Good to see you too.”

You kick off your shoes and head on down the corridor to push open the door. The members look up at the sudden intrusion. Your eyes immediately focus in on your boyfriend, soft and beautiful in his favorite pink jumper, the promised space saved for you on the couch between him and DK. Seungkwan looks incredibly on edge, fiddling with his phone in his hands, biting his lip. His eyes fix on you, and his posture tenses, he sits halfway up, clear worry all over his face, mouth open like he’s about to speak.

“Are you okay?” Seungcheol asks before he can say anything. “You look upset.”

That question is too much. Your lips quivers, your face crumples.

“Not really,” you choke out.

“Y/N-” Seungkwan says, sounding heartbroken, his hand extending.

You step forward, feet moving of their own accord. And then you’re folding into the space on the couch beside him, curling yourself into his arms, which wrap so easily around you, tucking your feet up onto the seat and your face into his chest. He coos softly to you, presses a kiss to your hair, and you let your tears begin to leak out, barely caring that a room full of people is watching.

Seungkwan, of course, is a sympathetic crier. So you’re pretty sure he’s started crying too when his voice breaks as he asks. “What on earth happened, baby?”

“I had the worst day.” you whisper, clinging to him, feeling him breathe, feeling it relax you. “The worst day.”

You keep crying, and you can hear a quiet mumble around the room. A few people offer vague words of comfort. You feel a new hand on your back and numbly process the fact that when you fell onto Seungkwan, you ended up in the space between him and DK.

After a minute or so of quiet, broken by the sound of increasing puzzled whispering from the boys, and Seungkwan whispering comfort so softly in your ear you know no one else can hear, things feel a little more settled, and you straighten up a bit. Seungkwan reaches out and gently dries your cheeks.

“Sorry,” Wonwoo says, and at least he’s a little less blunt than Woozi might have been, actually bothering to apologize first. “To interrupt. But….?”

He can’t seem to finish his sentence.

“Are you guys…?” Mingyu says, taking it over, and then stopping too.

Seungkwan glares at them, his face transforming.

“Now is not the time,” he snaps. “But yes, we got together like three weeks ago, get over it!”

They all gasp. Hoshi explodes with a loud “WHAT?!” but Jeonghan elbows him in the ribs. They all talk over top of each other, trying to work out how this even happened, and then trying to silence each other because now is not the time.

It’s loud and over the top, but you start to smile, because they’re all so dramatic and somehow it was just what you needed. As Seungkwan takes a worried glance at you, you see his face suddenly soften to see how their silliness calms you. You burrow a little closer to him, and he presses another kiss to your head.

“Feel better?” he whispers softly.

You nod. The room around you explodes into even louder noise as Vernon admits that he already knew you two were together. Seungkwan apologizes quietly to you for that one.

“It’s okay,” you tell him. “They all know now anyway. And crazy as they are, this is just what I needed.”

“Family?” Seungkwan asks you, looking absolutely smitten.

Tears fill your eyes again, but for a good reason this time.

“Family.” you confirm, reaching up to pull him in for a kiss that makes everyone scream.

Fights to Make: UFC Singapore

Holly Holm (beat Bethe Correia) vs. Liz Carmouche: Well, that was...something. At least Holm provided the lone highlight of the main card, kicking Bethe Correia’s head off after Correia prompted her to do something. But besides that...woof. This may been Holm’s most boring fight yet, as pretty much literally nothing happened until that third-round knockout. Horrifyingly, Holm may actually be in line for a title shot given the state of things - she has the highest name value of anyone left in the division, Sara McMann already has a fight booked, and it’s really just Raquel Pennington left as the only other obvious contender - but I’m not willing to go that far just yet. But...jeez, what else do you do with Holm? There are fights like Julianna Pena or Cat Zingano, who are coming off losses, and Holm/Pennington’s already been done, so...let’s go with Liz Carmouche, even though in the real world, it doesn’t appear Holm’s management wants her anywhere near someone who can wrestle.

Rafael dos Anjos (beat Tarec Saffiedine) vs. Jorge Masvidal: Dos Anjos’s welterweight debut was one of the highlights of the main card, at least relatively - it wasn’t a particularly great fight, and kind of ugly, but the former lightweight champ looked good and should be at least be a top ten or so fighter in the division at worst. There’s really no sense in wasting time trying to move dos Anjos up the ladder in his new division, so I’d do a fight with Masvidal next; it’s probably the best way to immediately establish dos Anjos as a contender, since Masvidal is also lightweight-sized and my main concern for RDA is when he faces some of the more giant guys at welterweight.

Colby Covington (beat Dong Hyun Kim) vs. Kamaru Usman: Well, Colby Covington won, at least. It was absolutely unwatchable - Covington is a relentless wrestler and damn good at it, but as he’s started facing decent competition, it feels less and less like we’re getting anywhere, as Covington is unable to work for a finish. But I’m not sure who the guy is who can shut down Covington’s wrestling - let’s try Usman, who’s currently the top rising welterweight in the company. Usman’s had a similar run up the ranks, dominating people with his wrestling, but he’s at least shown some vicious striking to go along with that in his last few fights. Ideally, I’d hope for Usman to get a big win and try and convince Covington to develop a more well-rounded game, but if Covington can use his wrestling to get through Usman, shit, good on him.

Bethe Correia (lost to Holly Holm) vs. Cat Zingano: I’m not sure what Bethe Correia did in a past life to be reincarnated as a human meme, but she lost in embarrassing fashion once again, taunting Holly Holm to do something and then immediately getting her head kicked in. Correia’s complete lack of athleticism just gives her a clear ceiling, even though she does have some smart gameplanning, so I don’t really know where you go from here. Cat Zingano needs a win. Cat Zingano can probably beat Bethe Correia at this point, unless her game is completely broken. So Bethe Correia it is!

Dong Hyun Kim (lost to Colby Covington) vs. Ryan LaFlare/Alex Oliveira (Jul. 22) winner: Kim’s been a stalwart of the welterweight top ten for years now, but this loss to Covington suggested that he may be aging into more of a gatekeeper role at this point. Whoever wins the fight in Long Island between LaFlare and Oliveira deserves a ranked opponent, and have enough strength and/or straight-ahead wrestling to provide a similar test to Covington, so Kim’s as solid a choice as any for that winner to break through against.

Marcin Tybura (beat Andrei Arlovski) vs. Walt Harris (beat Cyril Asker): Hm. Marcin Tybura got what, on paper, was a big win over Andrei Arlovski, but it wasn’t all that great in practice - Tybura abandoned his recent striking gains and just went back to his old wrestling-heavy game, which worked like a charm, even if it wasn’t all that exciting. So there’s not a ton that suggests Tybura is a future contender, even if he is really good. You could move him up the ladder if you wanted to, but instead I’ll put him against Harris, who’s a more interesting prospect; I’m not entirely sure Harris has finally figured things out, but as a 34-year old athlete, his time is now and he’s looked good thus far in the year, so Tybura’s a solid fight for Harris to see if he can become a thing while the opportunity is ripe.

Ulka Sasaki (beat Justin Scoggins) vs. Ben Nguyen: Welp. That was something. Justin Scoggins continues to Justin Scoggins, dominating a fight before getting choked out, and Ulka Sasaki was the beneficiary in this case. Sasaki’s such a fascinating prospect because he somehow makes 125 while still being 5′11″, and he has the slick submission skills he showed off here. Nguyen probably deserves a bigger fight, and I liked Nguyen/Scoggins as a rising contender fight if Scoggins would’ve just won the damn thing, but Sasaki/Nguyen is a fun, scrambly matchup that could fit in on an Asian card.

Andrei Arlovski (lost to Marcin Tybura) vs. Mark Godbeer: Well, I don’t think Andrei Arlovski can get a win that matters anymore - this was a good matchup, since Tybura’s on the slow side and doesn’t have much knockout power, but Arlovski still mostly got out-wrestled en route to a flat loss. Ideally, retirement would be next for Arlovski at this point, or UFC may just cut him coming off five straight losses (though Bellator would gladly have him) - of people on the roster, I guess Godbeer is the most winnable fight that wouldn’t be too sad, as he’s an undersized guy as well, but doesn’t have near the wrestling Tybura does.

Tarec Saffiedine (lost to Rafael dos Anjos) vs. Leon Edwards: Saffiedine’s UFC run continues to be kind of blah - he’s technically sound, but not particularly imposing, and tends to try and neutralize opponents rather than offer much resistance; and even then, Saffiedine doesn’t really seem to neutralize high-level opponents enough to actually get a win. Saffiedine’s at the point where I feel like there should be one of those fights we’ve seen a lot more of lately, between a veteran trying to avoid his worst loss and a prospect trying to get his best win, and I like British prospect Leon Edwards, a well-rounded athlete, as a fight for Saffiedine in that vein.

Justin Scoggins (lost to Ulka Sasaki) vs. Louis Smolka: Oh, Justin Scoggins. The shame of it is that he’s a good wrestler, but as soon as he started grappling with Ulka Sasaki, it was pretty much inevitable that he’d dominate until getting tapped out, which is exactly what he did. Sigh. Scoggins is an excellent prospect with a knack for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, and I have no idea what you do with him at this point, given that he’s also been around long enough to face a lot of his fellow mid-tier flyweights. I guess go with Smolka? I feel bad, since Smolka’s on a losing streak of his own and needs a win, but it’d be a solid fight and an opportunity to see if Scoggins can actually not find himself getting choked out against someone who can do so.

Alex Caceres (beat Rolando Dy) vs. Kyle Bochniak/Jeremy Kennedy (Jul. 22) winner: Alex Caceres remains impossible to figure out, as he looked good here, even if part of that was an exceptionally poor performance from Dy. Anyway, Caceres is fairly settled into an action gatekeeper spot, so he’d be a good next fight for either Bochniak or Kennedy, depending on which prospect wins on the Long Island card, to keep moving up the ranks.

Russell Doane (beat Kwan Ho Kwak) vs. Tom Duquesnoy: Doane’s a talented fighter who’s been hurt by some tough matchmaking, so it was nice to see him hang on the UFC roster in what was certainly his last shot by starching top Korean prospect Kwak. So, let’s throw him back in the deep end! Tom Duquesnoy’s the consensus best prospect in all of MMA, and Doane’s the perfect step up for his next UFC fight.

Jingliang Li (beat Frank Camacho) vs. Luke Jumeau: Li remains the one good Chinese fighter, and fun as hell, though the first round of this fight with Camacho showed his flaws as far as being able to get rocked early. So, yeah, Li’s pretty much a fun mid-tier fighter to try and put in exciting brawls, and Luke Jumeau, who made a successful debut in his native New Zealand last week, has some solid potential for a fight like that.

Lucie Pudilova (beat Ji Yeon Kim) vs. Lauren Murphy: I didn’t think she won, but Pudilova’s fight with Ji Yeon Kim was close enough that her getting the nod wasn’t a robbery - plus it assures a fun fighter stays on the roster. Pudilova against Lauren Murphy would be a fun fight between two hard-nosed competitors, so let’s do that.

Naoki Inoue (beat Carls John de Tomas) vs. Eric Shelton/Jarred Brooks (Jul. 29) winner: So, Naoki Inoue is fairly awesome - it’s hard not to look at his long frame and ridiculous ability to transition submissions and see him developing into, at worst, a flyweight version of, say, Charles Oliveira. But I have no idea where you go next, since UFC’s flyweight division is fairly thin and pretty much entirely a shark tank. So ideally UFC would just have him face a newcomer, but of anyone on the roster, I suppose go with the winner of the Shelton/Brooks fight at UFC 214, since those guys are as low on the totem pole as anyone.

Ji Yeon Kim (lost to Lucie Pudilova) vs. Cindy Dandois: Like countrywoman Chan Mi Jeon the week before, South Korea’s Kim fought her smartest fight yet in her UFC debut, abandoning the relentless wrestling game I’d seen in the past and instead flashing a surprisingly excellent boxing game. Still, she surprisingly lost the decision, so let’s get back on the horse and put her against Cindy Dandois. This could be a fun fight if it goes to the ground, but Dandois is, to put it simply, a god-awful striker, so Kim should be able to win this on the feet.

Jon Tuck (beat Takanori Gomi) vs. Devin Powell/Darrell Horcher (Jun. 25) winner: Well, Jon Tuck got a first round finish of Takanori Gomi, which was nice in that it kept Tuck on the roster, but it really just says more about how shot Gomi is at this point. Tuck’s purely a lower level guy until he shows any signs of his game clicking, so let’s put him against the winner of a pink-slip derby against Powell and Horcher next week, since that’ll be a fun lower-level fight where maybe someone can show something.

Takanori Gomi (lost to Jon Tuck) vs. Joe Ellenberger: As for Gomi, he should retire or at least be back in Japan crushing cans or something. The lightweight legend can’t take a punch anymore, and there’s no obvious one-dimensional submission specialist in the lower ranks of the division who just won’t punch Gomi in the face. Joe Ellenberger hasn’t fought since 2014, so he may be retired, but...I have no other options. I have no options! Gomi fights just make me sad.

Frank Camacho (lost to Jingliang Li) vs. Charlie Ward/Galore Bofando (Jul. 16) loser: I don’t know how much success Camacho will have in the UFC, but I hope he sticks around, since he’s a fun, undersized brawler. Conor McGregor teammate Charlie Ward - who is not good - is facing newcomer Galore Bofando on the Glasgow card, as UFC tries to find someone for Ward to beat, so whoever loses that, Camacho would make for a fun scrap against ‘em.

Cyril Asker (lost to Walt Harris) vs. Jarjis Danho: Asker’s pretty much just cannon fodder - he’s not bad or anything, but he’s not particularly big, he’s not particularly athletic, and that’s a problem with a game more focused on finishing things on the ground than anything. Jarjis Danho is massive but not particularly good, and has negative cardio, so Asker/Danho could just be a weird, entertaining trash fire, which I’m down for.

Kwan Ho Kwak (lost to Russell Doane) vs. Andre Soukhamthath: Kwak’s loss to Doane was a bit disappointing - Kwak’s an elite athlete, but just tries to out-athlete his way out of any tough situations, which got him knocked out when Doane was able to corner him. Hopefully Kwak gets a third UFC chance, and if it does, Soukhamthath, a Laotian-American fighter who had a fun UFC debut loss against Albert Morales, would make for a fun fight.

Carls John de Tomas (lost to Naoki Inoue) vs. Jenel Lausa: It was a one-sided loss, but de Tomas did well to survive against Inoue, although he’s also in the same boat as his opponent - I like them both as prospects, but don’t see an obvious winnable fight going forward on the roster. Let’s put de Tomas against Filipino countryman Lausa, an undersized boxer, since he’s one of the few lower-tier guys I think de Tomas could beat.

Rolando Dy (lost to Alex Caceres) vs. Patrick Williams: I liked Dy’s pre-UFC tape, but this was very much a “8-4 Filipino fighter” performance, as Dy got punched in the eye early and just mostly got dominated by Caceres, showing little in the process. Patrick Williams is apparently moving up to featherweight - that’s a fine lower-level action fight where hopefully Dy can show off some of his skills.
