I’ve seen this idea or comment multiple times: That Tommy has no character. Which is either on its own or in connection to not understanding why anyone likes BuckTommy apart from two hot guys together. I’m not going to get into the second one here, but the idea that Tommy has no character is just false and either a completely failure in media literacy at best or a blatant ignoring of canon at worst.

Now do we know everything there is to know about Tommy? Absolutely not, and I’m not trying to claim otherwise. But I would also point that question to any of the other characters on screen: Do we know everything about Bobby, about Chimney, about Buck, etc? I would say No, we don’t. I think the one we have the most information about is Buck just purely because the framing of the first season being about his growth and also because Buck is just such an open book about pretty much everything in his life and feelings. But even still, I don’t think we know everything about him. And that’s okay!

But back to Tommy—we actually do know a fair bit about him and have seen him grow and develop a bit. When we met him in “Hen Begins” in season 2, he’s not outright rude but he is very much, “not gonna put a target on my back here” because of Captain Gerrard (and/or perhaps because he had already realized his sexuality or was beginning to uncover it). When we meet him for the first time chronologically in “Chimney Begins,” he’s more rude and pretty dismissive of Chimney’s offer of friendship, even actively avoiding him. Again, this could be because of Gerrard, the environment here where it didn’t feel like anyone was really friends per say, or it could be down to what Eli tells Chimney: That these guys are not going to let just anyone in until they prove themselves, especially not a probie.”

However, the thing that shows the most about who Tommy is and his growth is his time in “Bobby Begins,” where it’s clear he’s got a really solid friendship with Hen and Chimney, making bets about the new Captain, going out for drinks, having those looks in the engine as Bobby gets them lost. It’s clear in the narrative in season 2 that Tommy, for all of being in only 3 episodes, has grown and changed a lot. (Which is why I find it so ironic that so many people criticizing this “retcon” of Tommy’s character always forget to mention Bobby Begins where it’s clear that Tommy’s friends with Hen and Chimney. I get that some fans want a full apology, but to me it reads like that probably already happened, or at least a conversation, a clearing of the air. Not everything needs to be directly spoonfed to you.)

Tommy coming back in season 7 has shown a bit more growth, as well as showing us sides of him we haven’t seen before. His patience and kindness with Buck and the newness of their relationship and Buck’s sexuality. His humor being dry and a little dark—“We’re all gonna die anyways” or even him suggesting to give Buck flying lessons because his fees are competitive. He’s open with his vulnerabilities when he feels safe enough to do so—immediately sharing his own jealousy at the 118 to Buck when Buck’s talking about his jealousy, telling Buck he cut the date short because he didn’t want to pressure Buck. To me, it shows maybe more growth or just another side of him because we only saw him in connection to his friends, where as Buck is a love interest.

Is this a lot of information? I guess it depends on what you want. Do we know his favorite color or his interests or how he romantically woos people or what he likes to do on his days off? I would argue that we do know a decent amount of that—he likes monster trucks, I assume watching romantic comedies as his favorite movie is canonically Love, Actually, he enjoys craft beers, knows and participates in Muay Thai, has a car lift in his garage so must know something about cars or mechanic stuff, is a pilot and firefighter, enjoys flying for fun on his days off, and has a trivia / karaoke thing (I’m still not sure if it’s a karaoke trivia or trivia at a karaoke bar, the wording confused me but whatever). Honestly, that’s more information than we have about any love interest Buck or Eddie have ever had when they were just starting a relationship.

And that’s also a huge point that I think is being missed by these types of arguments: Buck and Tommy are just starting a relationship, as in they are just getting to really know each other. So there is more to learn and uncover about each other. And honestly, we the audience are probably not going to be privy to a lot of that because it’s an ensemble show. So instead, they’ll likely show us that they’re moving forward and getting more comfortable with each other when they do interact—the kiss in the hospital reads to me as two people who’ve been spending time together and getting to know each other a lot more where they feel more comfortable. Hell, even just Buck’s change from his hesitance in episode 5 to his confidence in episode 6 is supposed to show his growth in accepting his sexuality and comfort being with Tommy.

The whole point is that the show sketches the outlines and maybe fills in some spots, but they sort of expect you to be able to still see the bigger picture of things. We know the outline of Tommy and are waiting to see it all filled in. That’s why he’s such an intriguing character and love interest for Buck—because he’s developed enough as his own person but there’s still enough blank spaces to explore with. He is the most developed love interest that Buck’s ever had, but he’s still just become Buck’s boyfriend so there’s still more to learn about him. That’s what dating and being in relationship with someone is: learning about them, their likes and dislikes, and what they are like in relationships, seeing if you’re compatible. So while there is already a massive head start in characterization than anyone else (except maybe Abby but even she wasn’t a fabulously written character and was honestly a terrible protagonist), there’s still more to learn about him and that’s a good thing. And while I can’t speak for everyone who ships BuckTommy, I can say that for me, it’s so fun to extrapolate on the bare bones of character and see how they develop in canon.

Tl;dr: Tommy does have a character. It's just a lot of showing and not telling and some people can't handle that.

As suggested by my friend @innocentlittlelambsnursery since we don't have any age dreamers in the story yet. (I like exploring different types of littles, too, so I really liked the idea!)

What's an age dreamer?

(There is one agedre little planned in itty bitty imps. And I'm so excited for it! But sinners hasn't had any yet. And I think Baxter is perfect for it.)

Age range is: 3-14 since middle/teen regressor was also highly voted.

His official classification will be:

40% Pet sitter 40% Neutral 20% Guardian

Age dreaming is something Baxter does for himself by choice because he wants to experience childhood the way he was meant to! He doesn't regress, but he acts like a kid to cope, heal the inner child, as a stress relief, and for fun!

Sometimes, age dreamers will get a little classification, but as you can see, that's not the case with Baxter.

(Maybe because he purposefully used a lot of smart big boy words, so nothing looked remotely little on the test? Who knows. 👀)

He's happy to keep it to himself though.

He doesnt need anyone else!

He's self sufficient and likes being alone!

It's just something that's special and just for him to enjoy.

So we got TFA Optimus being a brood mama as well as TFA Ratchet. But i would like to suggest that, what if not only these two bots are the fertile ones? What if the whole team Optimus, Ratchet, Prowl, Bulkhead, and Bumblebee are all horny mamas who wants nothing more but to have mates line up to them and breed them full with transfluid and sparklings~ i could just imagime at first each of them kept it a secret from each other of their dreams of becoming a broodmother but after a while being a crew together, the secret got out and all of them cry and hug eachother of how their so upset of not being able to just be breed over and over and to have beautiful sparklings to feed their milk while being pregnant for the next one. Oh man just loving the thought of Optimus confessing that he just wanted train in the academy to be able to find good candidates to give him babies, Ratchet letting out grumpy complaints that these days the youngsters don’t have good staminas like REAL studs, Bumblebee whines on how now he can’t find big daddies to frag big sparklings in him, Bulkhead admittig while blushing that he’s sad that he couldn’t find anyone to find that wants to give him sparklings because of his size, and Prowl crying emotionally reveals his past of being a spike slut before being trained with Yoketron and cries more how much he misses those days. Just imagine both Decepticons and Autobots scratching their helms on their soldier/population while they literally have a team full of yearning broodmothers wanting nothing more then to have someone ANYONE to frag all of them. Just imagine when it got out that there’s a team full of fertile broodmothers, both Decepticons and Autobots are now fighting each other to get team prime to breed them while team prime (maybe captured and were about to be bred but got interrupted by the opposite faction) whines on when they are ever going to be bred if the two factions are too busy fight each other to even start to finger them?!?!! Tho love the idea that the prime team while all are broodmothers eager for sparklings to be implanted in them, wouldn’t agree to any one that disrespects any one of them and if they did the broodmother that’s being fragged will instantly stop the breeding session and also will be rejected with the other broodmothers. Just loving the thought that while they are all horny sluts, they’re also the type that goes “oh you disrespecting us? Then get the frag out!” Cause hey their maybe sluts, but they are a strong knit group of sluts that been with each others from the start so if anyone wants any of them they gotta have to have all of them

god this took me ages to get to, so sorry, i am so into all of the TFA bots being desperate to get their forges filled with babies. Who would’ve guessed they’d have all agreed on one single kink when it was finally brought up! You have a team of very eager bots who all just really wanna get pregnant, after a while it’s natural that both decepticon and autobot command find out, which closely they interact with both, and they end up caught in the middle :)

The autobots want good broodmares to fix the dwindling population, the decepticons want more or less the same thing, though i am very in favour of team prime preferring decepticons - they might be brutish, yes, but the institute of broodmares has been around in their society for a long time now, they know how to respect their broodmothers. The elite guard’s breeding plan is basically “knock them up and put them somewhere dark so that no one knows where these sparklings are coming from” which is no good.

raving about trans josh . suck my nuts

i honestly don't see a lot for trans josh in art or writing. and i kinda feel like nobody sees a more feminine look or energy for him which is kind of lame. there's nothing that suggests he wouldn't like feminine things, and maybe it's his brazen dialogue that leads people to believe he's like any other dude who strictly presents masculine. which i mean, yes in the game he's never wearing anything that isn't, much like the rest of the guys.

i bring up femininity and masculinity because of how they are depicted in his concept masks. i have a feeling that people might think i "feminize" josh for no reason but the truth is that i got this idea from his concept mask artwork.

sad girl, sheila. sad girl especially is my favorite. and whatever this could just be me running on high levels of copium, but after already headcanoning josh as trans and then seeing these, i cherished this headcanon even more.

i can honestly see josh as transfem or transmasc, he's trans either way to me. i often think about him hiding his true forms of expression in favor of appealing to others, doing it for your own safety, etc, something i think trans people like myself can relate to.

some masks have themes related to motherhood as well.

and listen. i know sometimes horror plays into the themes of femininity within serial killers in horror media (like some being into crossdressing for example), but like i said. when thinking about josh being TRANS and seeing this, it fuels my belief for it more than ever. especially since it's in a Horror game as well.

like obviously this wasn't intended to be in the game as trans coding, it was inevitable for me personally to not let my favorite character get away with being cisgender LMFAO i had to stomp that out, it's just something i do, i think other trans people in fandom can relate to projecting that onto their faves.

and i know the until dawn fandom is fond of trans chris as it's literally the only trans headcanon i ever see no shade. and i like that one! truthfully, i do. sometimes i'm at odds with the way it's characterized in fics and whatnot, but it's a wholesome and harmless headcanon. i just wish i saw more for trans josh :-(

a lot of this headcanon requires brainstorming i think, you're not gonna use a lot of like. in game proof (besides the concept art) to try and justify it bc you literally don't need to for any lgbt headcanon honestly. esp in a heteronormative game like until dawn. like i know there's no way in Hell that SMG intended for josh to be trans, but it's my favorite headcanon ever and the only headcanon i've ever made a whole TIMELINE for because it speaks to me so much.

i also wanna bring up body horror and transformation. this also has to do with trans hannah. this, iirc, was kind of around back in the days of the fandom, but it's truly one of the best. i don't know if anyone at the time considered it. but i took hannah's transformation (and by proxy, josh's too) as trans coding as well, ofc it wasn't intended that way, i just think it makes things more interesting.

the idea of your body changing and you can't stop it sounds a lot like puberty to me and how it felt when i was going through it. sometimes horror movies even indulge in this idea, leading a lot of people to believe it as a metaphor for growing up trans (i've watched a lot of video essays mentioning this concept) and i wasn't gonna let josh or hannah off that easy. you are both TRANSGENDER.

of course this is all just projecting, but i just want these hcs to get some more love. also feminine josh, come on guys, can you really not see it for him? bc i can. maybe not as something he does Outwardly with confidence, but still, i don't see josh as him being strictly masculine, although i still love that look for him. not saying i don't.

How Rules & Setting Drive An RPG Session

(This first appeared in Indie RPG Newsletter)

Games have engines. Like a car, something creates the kinetic energy that keeps the game moving. The GM switches on the car and then steers it, but ideally they aren’t just powering the whole thing, legs secretly pumping under the car, Flintstones-style.

Sometimes the engine is the rules. Sometimes it’s the setting. In my on-going Wildsea game, the rules aren’t really prompting a lot of the cool stuff at the table – with the notable exception of Twists. Most of the fun at the table is coming from the setting. Whenever I need to say something cool, as the GM, I look towards the setting and I draw from there. And this has been very successful – we’ve had pirate cities on the back of a leviathan, a ship powered by a giant beating heart, a storm of electrical mosquitoes, and lots more.

But there is a difference between games that have a rules engine and a setting engine. When you have a rules engine, the game pulls on the players to act. Wildsea‘s Twists are a good example. Whenever you roll a double (two 5s, for example), anyone at the table can suggest a twist, which is any kind of new unforeseen event that occurs. Here, the game is prompting us – specifically, the players – to be creative and make “more game” happen. My players use twists to introduce cool stuff they want to chase.

When you have a setting engine, the GM pulls on the game. This might be before the game or during the session but the GM needs ideas and turns to the game. In my game, when the players are going to set out from a city, I look at the setting and pull up a bunch of interesting places they might want to go to (including “Tortuga but on a giant cactus worm”) and they pick. The players ask me what the weather is like so I look at the weather table and see “living storm” which makes me think of mosquitoes and we get a dense cloud of highly conductive mosquitoes. Whenever I need “more game”, I pull on the setting for it.

I don’t think either kind of engine is easier or better than the other in some objective way. The downside of letting the rules do the pulling is that it can happen too little or too much. In our last Wildsea session, there were too many twists coming up and everyone was kinda done with being creative and introducing stuff at the end of it. The downside of making the GM pull from the setting is that knowing when to pull, what to pull, how much to pull, that’s all stuff you need to learn. And till you learn it, it’s tough.

But that said, it’s always clear to me when an engine is doing its job: a great engine is one that makes me look like a great GM while I do as much or as little work as I want to.

That seems fair, right?

After the Darkest Day incident with Macro Cosmo Oleana needed to find a new job, and had all the qualifications for a management position in a different kinda shady highly influential conservation organization. Lucky for her after Faba’s demotion the Aether foundation had an opening!

I think Oleana’s awesome lol, definitely one of the stand out characters from Swsh, but the rest of Macro Cosmo was kinda underwhelming so I wanted to try putting her in a cooler evil team! I think she’d get along with Lusamine quite well, I’d love to see them girl bossing their way across the regions!

Aaron and Andrew

Here is a sort of guide to the twins pasts and how they met, and their relationship with each other throughout the years.

(I really hope this makes sense, do let me know if anything is confusing)

When they were separated

Tilda Minyard became pregnant after what Nicky believes is a one night stand. Once the twins were born, Tilda gave them both up to foster care a few days after they were born. Consumed by the guilt of giving her children up, she returned to the system and decided to take only one of them back. The one she chose wound up being Aaron.

Due to the fact that Tilda didn’t register the twins under a last name, Andrew wound up staying in the foster system under the name

“Andrew Doe” and bounced from family to family, none of them good, until he was thirteen. At this time, he moved in with the Spears. Cass and Richard Spear were the first family Andrew truly felt a connection to, more so Cass than Richard. Cass wanted to adopt Andrew, and he wanted to let her.

The problem was, the Spear’s biological son, Drake, started to sexually abuse Andrew. Andrew finally felt like he had a real family, a real mother, in Cass. Drake was graduating soon and he wanted to join the army right out of high school. Andrew thought that if he could last until Drake graduated, then he could have the mother he wanted and wouldn’t have to give her up because of Drake’s abuse.

Then, Officer Higgins from Oakland PD, who knew Andrew, saw Aaron who was with his mother and her boyfriend at a football game. Higgins believed Tilda was another foster parent and that the twins got separated in the system.

Higgins convinced Tilda to give him her number so he could give it to Cass Spear. She did, likely out of embarrassment and received a call the next day. Tilda told Cass that she wanted nothing to do with Andrew. Aaron, aware of what the call was about, listened on the home phone upstairs. He heard Tilda say that she didn’t want Aaron to meet Andrew. Aaron had a huge fight with Tilda but she wouldn’t budge, so Aaron went behind her back and contacted the Oakland PD. Aaron told them to give his information to Andrew’s foster family. Two weeks after, Aaron got a letter from Andrew telling him that he wanted nothing to do with Aaron, and to leave him alone.

While Aaron was trying to convince Andrew to meet him, so was Drake. Drake harassed Andrew, trying to get him to agree to meet Aaron. This was the reason Andrew refused to do it. Andrew didn’t care what happened to him at the hands of Drake, but he didn’t want anyone else to deal with it, especially the brother he’s never met. Cass convinced Aaron to try again later, and he was going to but he waited too long. Andrew decided to get himself locked up in a juvenile facility to escape Drake’s abuse. Juvie is where Andrew learned to play Exy,

With their mother

About two months after all of this happened, Tilda took Aaron and moved him to Columbia. Once Luther, Tilda’s brother and Nicky’s father, found out about Andrew, he went to interview Andrew’s foster family. A month later, Luther flew himself and Aaron out to California to see Andrew. Aaron picked up Exy in school as a way to get out of the house for a few extra hours to escape Tilda’s abuse.

Andrew noticed something was wrong and didn’t believe that the bruises came from Exy, and so he did everything in his power to get out. A year after this first short visit, Andrew got released from Juvie on good behavior, and put on probation. Luther managed to convince Tilda to take him in and so Andrew moved to Columbia. Andrew found out that Tilda has gotten Aaron addicted to drugs.

Andrew didn’t like Tilda, and made that very clear, but he and Aaron had a cautious, but somewhat friendly relationship. Andrew and Aaron made a deal, Andrew would stick with Aaron until high school graduation, and protect him from women who wanted to hurt him, on the condition that Aaron ice out anyone else. Andrew initially did this to get Aaron to stop seeing the friends who enabled his addiction. Aaron, even with the deal in place, tried to make friends and even date a few girls. One night, Andrew pretended to be Aaron and got into a fight with Tilda. Andrew made it to Luther’s house, which is how the Hemmicks found out about Tilda’s abuse. Luther called Tilda to talk but she took Andrew and left.

It’s uncertain what exactly happened to cause the car to crash, Nicky thought maybe Tilda panicked when she realized it wasn’t Aaron in the car, or Andrew did it on purpose, or if they were fighting. It is later implied by Andrew that he staged the entire accident, yet what exactly happened that caused the crash is still not known. Tilda wasn’t wearing her seatbelt and died during the accident.

Aaron believes that Andrew killed Tilda because she left him in the foster care system. Andrew says that he killed Tilda because she hurt Aaron. Tilda’s death destroyed the fledgling relationship between the twins.

With Nicky

Nicky Hemmick was in Germany when he found out about his Aunt Tilda’s death and when he came back to the states for her funeral, he was told that his father was planning to take in the twins. Nicky was miserable when he lived with his parents and didn’t want the twins to have to deal with what he went through so Nicky became their legal guardians. They got a house in Columbia and the first thing Andrew did was stock the upstairs bathroom with canned food and other supplies and lock Aaron in it, forcing him through withdrawal. Nicky got a job at the restaurant Sweeties where he and the twins were introduced to a non-addictive drug called “cracker dust” to try and help Aaron with his addiction. He found out from customers about Eden’s Twilight and got a job there by befriending one of the bartenders, Roland. Eventually he got both of the twins part time jobs at the club.

Medication

Two years before the start of The Foxhole Court, Nicky was attacked outside of Eden’s Twilight by four men because of his sexuality. Andrew stepped in and nearly beat all four of them to death. The courts rules that the violence took a step too far past self defense and Andrew’s lawyer managed to convince them to have Andrew engage in intensive counseling and be medicated for three years instead of going to prison.

With the Foxes

Andrew was scouted by Edgar Allen University, with Kevin and Riko, but he turned them down and nearly immediately signed with the Palmetto State Foxes. He signed with the Foxes because Coach Wymack was willing to sign his brother and cousin as well as let Andrew come off his medication for Exy games. All three joined the team.

During the series, the twins rarely interact with each other unless they have to, showing a distant and oftentimes cold relationship. Aaron blames Andrew for Tilda’s death, and Andrew refuses to apologize for keeping his end of the deal they made, even if Aaron won’t.

In The Raven King, while Nicky is trying to reconnect with his parents, Drake is waiting upstairs and attacks Andrew. Neil notices something is wrong and takes Aaron upstairs to help Andrew. Upon seeing what was happening, Aaron murders Drake to help Andrew. After the attack, the decision is made to send Andrew to rehab to get him off of his mood altering medication. He comes back and seems even more uninterested in his brother than usual.

During The King’s Men, Neil manipulates Katelyn, Aarons girlfriend into shutting him out until the twins go to counseling together. Eventually, they do start going and attempting to work out some of their issues. Later in the book, Aaron uses their deal against Andrew, if Aaron can’t have a relationship with Katelyn because of their deal, then technically Andrew was breaking their deal by doing what he was doing with Neil. Andrew angrily and reluctantly agrees to end the deal with Aaron and confronts Katelyn in the library where he tells her that even though he is allowing her to see Aaron, that doesn’t mean he approves of or likes her. He tells her to stay away from him. Aaron and Neil end up switching rooms, Neil moving in with Kevin, Nicky, and Andrew, and Aaron moving in with Matt.

After the books

The twin’s relationship improves slowly over time, but eventually they acknowledge each other outside of the counseling sessions. According to a post from Nora’s Twitter, after the twins graduate and figure out they have to leave each other “Aaron catches hold of Andrew and Andrew is the last to let go.” After graduation, Aaron proposes to Katelyn right before his fifth year at Palmetto and they get married shortly after graduation. Neil manages to convince Andrew to go to the wedding but it takes two separate favors to do so, one to get Andrew to go and the other to make sure Andrew doesn’t threaten Katelyn. Aaron and Katelyn move to Chicago after graduating from Medical school and decide not to have children because of their busy careers and general disinterest in having any. Andrew lives with Neil and they adopt two cats while having successful professional Exy careers.
