As someone who is on the ace spectrum (demiromantic and asexual), I really like when people write about some of my favorite characters having the same sexualities as me.

I do headcanon him as demiromantic, and also pansexual.

(Down below is me explaining him being demiromantic when it comes to his feelings and also Barry + Carol...)

HOWEVER, he is... as Ollie says a space tomcat, he takes on emotions much more seriously in my hc. He can do whatever, but when it comes to how he feels romantically it became a lot harder for him to express himself romantically too. <- Trouble with love genuinely but with trying to tell people anything related with love has been a topic for him. Which is also an explaination of the acts that he does for the people he cares about because it REPLACES him trying to explain his feelngs. When you think about it, the way Hal shows his love towards people or showing that he cares comes into a lot of wild acts or making sure that he'll come to the ends of the Earth when it comes to someone. (Like in your post, which I forgot to reblog and add to it :3, in DC vs Vampires, how Hal wanted to rule the world with Barry....) ------ Unrelated but related-- While yes, he does save people, Hal is deepened through emotional bonds both platonically and romantically... (I like to take this literal, as a form of being bonded by lantern ring emotion such as Carol with holding to Star Sapphire and Barry with being expressed by HAL to hold the mantle of hope, because it took years with these two for Hal to be linked with them in some type of way -> Sorry, I'm kinda normal about the bond Carol and Hal have, there's many levels of a relationship that these two have -- Including Barry and Hal together. There's a lot of things to talk about these two.)

This first occurs with Carol. As they grew older (Teen years to Adulthood <- Before JL), it gave Hal time of falling for her. Whether it was those long talks out on drives or opening up to each other about the deeper things. Plus, bringing in the things they face together and the collaborations these two agree on or disagree or OVERALL the way they communicate through different forms when it came to both in suit and out of suit. One of my thoughts for my Demiromantic Hal hc. Not only this but they also have a deep connection together later when it comes the Star Sapphire Possessions + Hal being Reborn in Spectre while Carol has presumably moved on. Although it took a bit to figure himself out, he both cares and loves Carol in impossible ways that could be explained. Which leads me to the next case...

(I had to ramble about them... They are like the best friends ever + including Barry and Iris when they come along.)

Sharing to add on for your post... But this is ALSO an idea I've been having for a fic... But I don't have time to write it ALL because I want to make it to many chapters. Be Prepared because I like when you mention HalBarry to me, I get happy because I don't talk about it to people. I also love to hear HalBarry thoughts because I project things that people don't get much like what I'm about to write..

The way Hal feels when it comes to being in love, is partially dumbfounded, it's something that sets him back when he realizes that there's an elephant in the room. One he describes as longing in a way where he didn't know he felt this fast. When in reality it has been years since this friendship. Yes, feelings for one of his best friends. One that he's been friends with since the beginning of the Justice League formation. Which was long... His hair is grey and the smile that was once without wrinkles now forms lines whenever he smiles or laughs.. In his mind, it feels that the feelings that are coming into play feel dangerous. How it makes his palms sweat just being near Barry. How when he isn't being occupied by anything busy, he's thinking about a fond memory with Barry. How Barry makes him smile, the way everything about his friend just makes him giddy like some teenage puppy love. Something he never got to experience but god, when he's with Barry, he feels so young. That even imagining them growing old together is just one step to keeping Hal feeling so young. It's like being awkward when you have no idea where to put your hands. Especially with a friend you've had for many years. A friend who's been there by his side that Hal now begins to think an eye for god knows how many minutes. The friendship teasing between the two and the playful chases that they would take on those evenings when everything just seemed perfect. How standing on that cliff when they were younger, the intimacy of the stare they held. Their deep connection that brings Hal to appreciate every moment he's had with him. How they're practically linked in color. How hope filled the willpower that settled in his personality. That when it came to Barry, it felt like he might have something to lose. Something and someone he's lost before. He knows what it felt to lose Barry. Which one proved his love for Barry to be a lot stronger than what he first thought when it came to the last glimpse of friendship. How that bond turned into a strong form for what Hal should keep fighting for. It was so unexpected. So unexpected to be in love with your best friend.

Favorite character: Ronan Lynch <3 Second favorite character: oh god. im just going to say chainsaw bc i love her so much and i don't want to single out any of the other protagonists bc then i feel bad.

Least favorite character: Maggie Steifvater is such a great author I cannot name a single character I'm not 100% invested in, even ones that would be so easy to get bored by, like Mr Gray or Greenmantle I need to learn everything about them ever.

Favorite character: Hamlet Thee Dane. truly the character of all time

Least favorite character: depends on the production tbh. like i used to not care about laertes and polonius, but i became obsessed with the former either last year or the year before, and the version i read this year (Nicki Greenberg's graphic novel which i would recommend) had a really engaging interpretation of the latter which was so good i got sad when he died.

The character I’m most like: hamlet is literally me btw.

Favorite pairing: tragic danish boyfriends is a classic and brilliant but hamlet and laertes also upsets me so so much. like they are literally perfect foils

Least favorite pairing: ugh. gertrude and hamlet sexually. freud suck my dick

Favorite moment: yes ive seen/read it 5 times now. no, i've never not been emotionally destroyed by the ending

honestly, reading comics canon & the end of said comics canon while at the same time reading really well-thought-out takes like AITWW which takes what is, indeed, a beautiful queer bit of unpredictability flung into an otherwise faithful adaptation of comics canon and turns it into a whole story of its own-- is really making me personally excited for all the ways fanfic writers can use that as a Spanner in the Works/disruptor for Morpheus's canon ending. being Also An Old that potential gets me far more than anything canon may or may not do with hob, personally.

(which is to say thanks, AITWW has made my own creative brain do several backflips of excited Possibilities. so many possible stories.)

I mean... yeah. Obviously there are a lot of queer characters/themes in the Sandman to start with, but I think everyone imprinted on Dreamling like a baby duckling because a) it fulfills the obvious Grumpy/Sunshine trope that fandom loves, and b) it offers the thing that everyone loved about Our Flag Means Death, where the queer characters got to talk to each other, share interests, develop over time, and actually offer a real emotional basis to ship them as lovers. Of course, OFMD did that in ten episodes as opposed to just the back half of Sandman 1.06, but it's the same thing. And also, I would note that despite all the other queer representations/characters in the show, there isn't really anyone else to actively ship in a canon-supported LGBTQ context? We see Johanna's lover Rachel die in the same episode that we meet her, the Corinthian's entire life motto is be gay and do crimes but you don't exactly ship a serial-killing nightmare with any of the minor characters who he menaces and/or eats, Hal is great but still a bit-part player who gets paired off with Carl in the background, and Alex and Paul are already out of the picture by the end of the first episode. (Besides, Alex, keeping the dude you desperately want to fuck locked up in the basement for decades even after your terrible dad is dead is, uh, Bad.)

Fandom can, of course, imagine and headcanon interactions between various queer characters, but as far as an active, possible, ongoing relationship goes, where we are shown them developing feelings for each other and the narrative makes a point of underscoring them in a romantic context, Hob and Dream are kind of IT. Many shows just throw a queer couple in there as token representation and don't really take the time to actually show why they're compatible as a pairing, but there's so much possibility with Hob and Dream both that is already depicted in-show and can easily be extrapolated from the source material, the actors' and writers' interviews, the themes that are present in their narrative, and so forth. They're one of the most deeply romantic interactions in the whole show, despite never explicitly verbalizing their feelings or having any physical moments. You genuinely believe that these two immortal beings are truly affected by each other, they have incredibly complex feelings about each other, it absolutely means something special for them to reunite, and that no matter what happens, they will never entirely let go of each other. Which I think is a credit to the acting, writing, and how quickly we got that in the course of 20-30 minutes in one episode.

So yes: Dreamling IS a deeply queer and deeply romantic disruption of the source material (in a good way), and offers possibilities that have already been foreclosed or minimalized in other storylines, including in comics canon itself. They're one of the relatively few moments of sheer queer happiness, they were left open-ended and in a good place, Dream is obviously the main character of the whole series so developing a queer relationship for him is more than just what's going on in the background, and I really hope they continue to lean into this when writing/planning future seasons. Obviously, I love them and want to see more of them, but I feel Some Kinda Way about queer immortals, who can persist in all ages and eras of history, and not be consigned to just die, whether from narrative carelessness or Bury Your Gays or whatever else. There's something incredibly powerful about queer characters who literally can't be killed (also why I imprinted on Old Guard so much), and who are shown experiencing and overcoming adversity in so many different ways, and at the end of it, still choosing to keep living. I just have many feelings about that.

What are your Shroomy headcannons?

Ok ok ok so hear me out on all of these!

Shroomy most definitely would like watching the old silly whimsical cartoons like Mickey Mouse or Looney Tunes.. I could see him turning the cartoons on for the kids, but also watching them cause he really loves them as well.

Human Shroomy would have freckles and be a red head! Also he'd probably wear multiple bandages to show that he has got hurt.. Especially after the bear incident..

Shroomy probably still sleeps with plushies. Not only am I saying this cause he had a plushie in his room in "Mario's Valentine's Advice" but also cause he seems like the type of guy to own several plushies as a grown adult and sleep with them.

I headcanon him as autistic. I could see him owning a little rainbow infinity symbol keychain. It'd probably fit better as a badge, but being autistic isn't really an accomplishment.. It's something you kinda struggle with, but it's also what makes you you! I feel he'd have the keychain because he wants people to know that he's autistic.

Remember how he has a cat..? They don't ever show up again but he definitely has a cat... I'm thinking he used to have a cat but he leaves the pictures up cause he really misses them. He's also not extremely phased over his cat's death because obviously he's a really positive guy. I'm also picturing his cat's name to be something campfire related. I think that'd be really cute. Like Smoky or something.... Maybe he named his cat after Smokavich?

Him and Rob are definitely the holiday duo. I mean listen... they're always next to eachother in holiday specials. They probably love talking about their favorite holiday traditions, what food they eat on Christmas/Thanksgiving/New Years, etc. Betting you they also had matching Halloween outfits one year that'd be really wholesome. I could kinda see them going with a "The Wizard Of Oz" outfit theme. Rob as the scarecrow obviously, and maybe Shroomy dressed up as the wicked witch. Cause I could see him wanting to try being scary but also keep his silliness.

Shroomy probably owns a mug that says "Nature is my home".

Shroomy has a phone but barely uses it because he's not chronically online. He only uses it to call his friends and family. He probably has his aunt and uncle as contacts on his phone, but his uncle probably deleted Shroomy's contact meanwhile Shroomy is still trying to get his attention. He's thinking maybe "oh uncle Doom is probably only ignoring me a little bit! Nothing too big!" but no he deleted his contact without telling him... I'd also love to think that Shroomy gave his aunt and uncle silly little emojis next to their names.

Shroomy loves all food, but is smart enough to know when to stop eating certain foods. I got this headcanon idea from the fact he always seems so joyous when eating food and literally lived in the Luncheon Kingdom at one point iirc..... He's just like me fr fr!

Shroomy's absolute favorite show of all time is "Camp Camp", and his favorite character is David (obviously)! He's singing the lyrics to the theme song and is sometimes quoting David. He's also trying to get Karen into the show because he thinks she'd relate to Gwen.

Shroomy's phone homescreen would definitely be of a camp, meanwhile his lockscreen would probably be of him and Smokavich with a symbol representing the scouts in the background.

Shroomy, Karen, Bob, and Hal Monitor are always matching profile pictures because Shroomy thinks it's fun and silly. Shroomy made them do it..,, He didn't force them but he really wanted them to match with him!

Shroomy owns a swear jar (I think that'll be really funny)...

Hal- Rocky Horror Picture Show (he has a Dr Frank-N-Furter costume somewhere in his closet that he plans to wear for some League Halloween party)(specs and i are hardcore projecting genderfluid Hal hcs onto this)(he also knows how to dance the Time Warp)

Guy- Halloween (he is mad about the reboot and how the lighting has made the movie kinda worse. like he has no problem with the fact that they're making the new movie, and he isn't into how movies are really directed in any way, but even he is mad about the lighting)

John- Beetlejuice (it's a classic and Michael Keaton and the rest of the all-star cast do so well in it. he is also a fan of the musical)

Kyle- Coraline (the art style is so good and he definitely was terrified of it until he watched it and then he was fine with it. he definitely uses it to scare the senior lanterns tho)(dude it fucked me up. he'd be all over that -ketchup)

Jess- Casper (she liked it as a kid because it was about a connection that she wanted when she was younger that she didn't really have. plus it's a really sweet movie)(note: neither of us have seen it)

Simon- Paranorman (it's a good movie about seeing the truth of people, more than just what you see on the outside or in your expectations about them. and the art style is really unique and good and yeah. vibes, man)

Alan- Young Frankenstein ("it has Gene Wilder in it, and gay people like Gene Wilder, right? i mean, i'm gay, and i like Gene Wilder. Gene Wilder is for the gays and i said so" -specs)(let the record state that ketchup also loves this movie and also really freaking loves Alan Scott and approves wholeheartedly)

Carol- Hocus Pocus (she dressed up as one of the Sanderson Sisters for Halloween last year)("she is a Sanderson sisters fan, and i mean in the bisexual way" -specs)

Kilowog- Little Shop of Horrors (he would get a kick out of the giant man-eating plant and the protagonist just being a little guy(tm))(plus the songs are really catchy and when Hal and Guy showed it to him, both of them were singing and quoting along, so its a movie that holds a special place in his heart)

Razer- Addams Family Values (he appreciates Wednesday's homicidal tendencies a lot. also his family is a little kooky, and the Addams family is a little kooky and crazy and he likes it)("...so basically, what i’m saying, is that Razer is a Wednesday Addams kinnie" -specs)

Thaal- The Blair Witch Project (he fell victim to its trappings and he thinks that it's real. he keeps trying to convince Hal to go ghost hunting with him. Hal keeps refusing and telling him that ghosts probably don't exist but Thaal refuses to listen.)

B'dg- Over The Hedge (the Verminator is scary.)

Movie Review: The Holdovers

Alexander Payne is truly the master of combining comedy and tragedy! His first few films Citizen Ruth, Election, and About Schmidt truly announced him with smart comedies that often times challenged the viewer. What really blew me away was his 2004 film Sideways. The comedy about two middle-aged friends in the Wine Country for a week before one gets married was such a LOL funny comedy one minute, sad about their mid-life trajectory the next. But in the end, it was about accepting where you are in life, not where you aren't. I out and out loved it! His next film 2011's The Descendants was a very multi-layered family drama set in Hawaii. I included it in my 10 Best Movies of the 2010s. I liked his 2013 father-son road movie Nebraska, but there was some pushback from audiences. God forbid a director tries to make a black and white slow burn! But I appreciated the ensemble cast and what he was going for. 2017's Downsizing was a misstep for Payne. I was all for him trying something different and stepping into wild Michel Gondry-territory, but the story was a little uneven. Now Payne has made a serious return to form with The Holdovers, which was actually filmed in Massachusetts last Winter, and reunites Payne with Sideways star Paul Giamatti. I got to attend a special IFFBoston Post-Fall Focus screening at Somerville Theatre and Payne himself attended for an intro and Q&A. There was actually a scene that was filmed at the Somerville Theatre and now the finished film was playing there!?!

Set in Barton Academy, a private boarding school for boys, in 1970 New England just before Christmas break, Giamatti plays Paul Hunham, an unpopular curmudgeonly teacher. He gets stuck supervising students who are unable to go home for the holidays. Hence the name The Holdovers. Also there during the break is lunch lady Mary (played by Da'Vine Joy Randolph, a scene-stealer from Dolemite Is My Name and the High Fidelity TV series). After all of the other students go away with one of the student's rich father, an unpopular student Angus Tully (played by newcomer Dominic Sessa) is left with Mr. Hunham and the two form an unlikely friendship.

This is easily one of the best movies of the year and one I'm sure is going to become better and better with each viewing during the holiday season. There is a serious early 70s influence, most prominently from Hal Ashby (Payne was among the interviewees in the 2018 documentary Hal about Ashby). But beyond the influences, this truly feels like the kind of movie that would have been released in the early 70s: the look, the feel, the sound, and the way the characters carry themselves. But like all of Payne's films, this balances comedy and tragedy. Without getting into spoilers, there is a sense of loss for these characters that is heightened by being alone during a holiday break. But that connection that is made is truly special. Sessa is a revelation. Payne has a knack for casting newcomers who swing it out of the park and Sessa is going places. Randolph is exceptional as a grieving mother. But it is definitely Giamatti's show. He's been consistently good in countless films since Sideways, but this is a part tailor-made for him. Someone who is highly intelligent, yet so antisocial. Payne isn't known for working with actors more than once, but we can only hope this is the start of more collaborations. All hail Payne!

Intro and Q&A:

The screening I attended, Payne gave an intro. He noted that this was the first screening on 35mm. After the film, critic Ty Burr (a friend and colleague of mine) moderated a Q&A. Here are some of the takeaways:

Burr and Payne at the Somerville Theatre

Local Crew: He had tons of positive things to say about the Massachusetts based crew that worked on the film. He mentioned of all the films he made outside of the state of Nebraska (i.e. The Descendants in Hawaii and Downsizing in Toronto), this is the one that has stayed in touch the most. In the audience at this screening were a ton of local crew members. You could hear cheering during certain scenes, locales and cast members. Payne mentioned that he didn't know New England, beyond visiting Dartmouth and some Ivy League colleges as a teen.

Somerville Theatre: in addition to being a location, Payne mentioned that they screened some 70s films for the crew in the cinema. He also added that the film had played festivals and had opened in NY and LA but this was the first screening on 35mm.

He talked about what he's been doing since Downsizing. He apparently flirted with directing The Menu and The Burial.

Screenplay: Five years ago he received a TV pilot from David Hemingson that was set in a boarding school in New England. Payne called him and said he didn't want to do the pilot but wanted him to write a screenplay in the same universe. This marked the first time he had directed a screenwriter as opposed to writing with a co-writer or getting a completed screenplay from a writer.

Casting: After not finding the right actor from a casting call, they began searching private boarding schools in Massachusetts. That's how Sessa was cast.

I just went through your time displacement fic, (very very good, my strider obsessed brain is loving the juice, may or may not have read a few spoilers on your blog) and let me just say, I've only had this Dirk for 3 days, but that if anything happended to him, I would kill everyone in this room and then myself. Good thing that will never happen riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight? :,)

In all seriousness, I LOOOOOVE the way you write him and Hal! Like they are both very clearly struggling with their own problems, (Hal my man especially) but still love Dave very much and are trying their best. And I love the way you adress Daves trauma too, and how he wasn't just scarred by his Bro, but by events of the game as well! (Like everyone was scarred!! Those kids need therapy!!! No Rose, you as a fellow victim are NOT fit to play therapist here!!!!!)

I could probably write something more coherent of an analysis, but as is I just wanted to come to the source to show my appreciation and to wish you a nice day.

I'm so glad you like Dirk and Hal! They're a shining part of the fic for me, if it weren't for them I don't think the story would've ever gotten so long. I had the initial premise in my head for awhile, but as soon as I really started to settle in to think about it, Hal especially started to interest me more, since an adult Dirk and Hal in a different world just changes SO much about how they work together. Things start really bad then they HAVE to get better because they have so many YEARS. They're still so alike to each other, but they're also so different. They're both guardians to Dave, but they approach it differently which is really interesting to work with. As the story moves on, we should get more with Hal--I think there's probably still a lot about him here that hasn't gotten a chance to shine as much.

And that's a good point about the Sburb trauma! The game really fucks with everyone, both before during and after. It's fun to think of what the Game has done (and will do) to everyone, because absolutely. Dave gets a whole special category of his own, being a Time player, who really in a lot of ways get the short end of the stick when it comes to trauma. Timeline upon timeline, and in canon-verse, the whole need to continue to maintain the Alpha Timeline, and the knowledge that you will die if you don't--yikes.

ok, i’ve gathered my thoughts (more or less) and decided to rank all sandman episodes. before i begin: i LOVE all of them, and putting them in the right order was very difficult. let’s go

i’m gonna sort them from the one i liked the least to my favourite one

- chapter three: dream a little dream of me - this is gonna be controversial, but i must say it. i’m not a fan of constantine, any version of them, that’s just not my type of character. having said that, i think jenna coleman did great job portraying this character! really loved her sass and relationship with dream. all in all, i was very happy, especially given that this issue was my least favourite when i read it;

- chapter one: sleep of the just - i was amazed with it when i watched in during the special screening, and i still love it! it starts the show really well, sets the events properly, shows us characters, and most importantly - the imprisoning scene looked so good! i had chills when they were chanting. additionally, presenting the corinthian that early was a great idea, everything made much more sense afterwards;

- chapter seven: doll’s house - i was surprised when they switched rose’s mother, miranda, with lyta, but it turned out to have much more sense! i liked their relationship and rose herself is much more interesting character here. also all the characters from the house, hal, barbie and ken, zelda and chantal were perfect;

- chapter eight: playing house - making jed the fake sandman? best choice ever. the corinthian being the one who actually saved him, not just giving him the ride was an interesting choice, as it showed a different side of him (i mean who would have guessed he would be so great with kids??). rose entering the dreams of her friends was done beautifully, they were just as weird as dreams can be;

chapter two: imperfect hosts - how on earth did they make me care so much about a character i’ve met like 2 minutes ago?? poor gregory :(((((( cain and abel are perfect, just like in the comics, and so are the kindly ones! i loved the visuals in this episode, especially dream’s journey and gathering what he needed;

chapter five: 24/7 - i was terrified when i thought i will be watching the diner episode, but it turned out rather tame, or at least tamer than the comic. up to some point i even thought to myself “huh, this is not so bad”, and then they started killing each other and themselves and i was like “ok i take it back”. anyway very good episode, quite faithful, with changes in the right places;

chapter ten: lost hearts - a finale that didn’t disappoint me was such a relief after all the mcu shows i’ve watched. they did a great job making everything right, not rushing anything and letting all the events end the best way possible. and i loved teasing another season with azazel and lucifer!

chapter four: a hope in hell - THE BATTLE. this was very difficult to portray, the comic versions never really spoke to me, but THIS?? the visuals, the creativity, the execution - everything was perfect. hell itself was done with so many details, it was scary, but not unnecessary ugly or evil. and gwendoline christie, oh my gosh. legend;

chapter nine: collectors - listen, i just adore the cereal convention. i loved this absurd concept in the comic and i love it in the show, the execution was flawless. besides that was the episode with the biggest amount of the corinthian, so i can’t not appreciate it;

chapter six: the sound of her wings - i cried through the entire half of the episode :’) death was so gentle, so kind, so understanding, so full of love for people and her annoying little brother. it might sound bizzare, but the episode about dying felt heart-warming and soothing. and then the episode was made even better with hob’s story. this is one of my favourite issues and the adaptation did it justice. the entire thing has a special place in my heart.

phew, what a ride. as you can see, i am very pleased with the entire show, it exceeded my (very high) expectations. can’t wait for season 2 (netflix, don’t you even dare cancel it)

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Welcome to the weekend!

Wow! Here we are again: Friday! Where did that week go? No, seriously, where did that week go?

You’re probably hearing the term ‘artificial intelligence’ a lot, and lots of people are probably trying to scare you by saying that, fairly soon, artificial intelligence a.k.a. robots will take over. At present, lazy students are using A.I. to write their essays and cynical business men (people like Spotify) are using A.I. to make music. Oh, make no mistake, it’s definitely artificial and it’s definitely intelligent but it’s NOT going to replace real talent! The great artists of our lifetime (writers, actors, songwriters, musicians, singers etc.) have that essential spark of magic that no machine will ever have. You really think A.I. will create a Stevie Wonder song like ‘Sir Duke’ or a Bob Marley composition like ‘Redemption Song’? What they’re doing right now is feeding Stevie songs into a computer and getting the computer to write like Stevie. The computer may be able to write like Stevie but real artists are unpredictable and machines are not. Creative people like Stevie or Pharrell or Dave Grohl or Jacob Collier innovate. A computer will never innovate. A.I. might be able to replace some musicians but NOT the truly great ones!

It might sound weird but … I love my house. When it’s cold outside, I love stepping into my house. It’s small and warm and cute (like me) but, above everything else, it’s a home. There’s space for us to eat, space for us to socialise, and room for friends or relatives to crash out! Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote, “A house is not a home when there's no one there to hold you tight, and no one there you can kiss good night.” Well, some single people might disagree (because they get their love somewhere else) but it’s another line from another great song co-written by the great Burt Bacharach, who sadly died on Wednesday aged 94.

In a way, Dionne Warwick was the first black music artist to have a profound impact on me. My mum used to play her all the time. I knew all the words and we would sing along. I had no idea who wrote the songs. I later found out they were written by two Jewish white guys called Hal David and Burt Bacharach. I didn’t know where San Jose was but I really wanted to go. Burt’s catalogue is absolutely stunning. So many people have covered his songs! Hope you can join me tomorrow at 1.00 p.m. for ‘The A-Z Of Mi-Soul Music’. It’s going to be a very special show.

It was the annual Justice League Halloween party and the costume theme was to dress as your favorite hero coworker. No one was surprised when Clark showed up in a tacky Batman costume, one clearly purchased at the dollar store but his dedication to staying in character dispelled all doubts of his sincerity. Barry wore a green Ringpop and domino mask while Hal chatted up Diana, who herself was wearing an Aquaman inspired dress, in a Flash themed snuggie. Bruce quietly stood off to the side and made sure no one commented on his Robin costume. At least this version has pants.

But though no one said anything, they were all awaiting a special arrival. Dinah had taken some of the younger kids out trick or treating but would be bringing them back to the Watchtower to enjoy a bit of the party before bed. It was Captain Marvel’s third Halloween with the League but Billy Batson’s first. They were all eagerly awaiting which hero the young god would dress as.

“It’s gotta be Supes, kid is practically an expy of him,” Hal told Zatanna emphatically even if he secretly was holding out hope the kid would come dressed as him. 

“Yeah but Bruce’s kid and him are practically attached at the hip and I know for a fact Jason is going as Wonder Woman so they might try to match,” Zee, as Deadman, commented. She herself thought the little magician would pull off her tailcoat and tophat quite well, perhaps saving the fishnets for when he was a bit older.

“It doesn’t matter who he comes as,” Victor defended as he straightened out his white cape and lightning bolt shirt. “He’s gonna look cute either way but I did tell Billy I’d be dressing as him so...”

“Dinah, baby, love of my life,” Ollie whispered into his phone, away from the others. J’onn in his Supergirl suit leaned in closer as he munched on Oreos. “You gotta tell me what the little guy is wearing, the betting pool is off the charts and I’ll let you in on the action if you just-”

“Oliver, you’re already a billionaire,” Dinah sighed affectionately from the other end of the line. “But we’re on our way back now so you’ll find out soon enough but uh,” she paused, “you might wanna prepare yourself. His choice is quite controversial.” 

While the Leaguers bantered and argued and ate way too snacks, they all wondered what teammate their youngest member would come as. What superhero did Billy Batson look up to the most? Who’s costume would he don for All Hallow’s Eve? Everyone not so secretly hoped they would be chosen. 

“Hey everyone, we’re back!” Dinah announced, brushing off her makeshift Zatanna costume. It was similar enough to her own and she hadn’t had time to shop this year. Jason made a beeline for Bruce, his glittering gold tiara and star patterned pants drawing attention as he chatted with his guardian about his haul. It made it easy to overlook Billy’s much subtler costume.

“Oh my god I’m going to kill that man,” Zatanna groaned into her palm as she took in the boy’s clothing. Her hand helped to conceal the small smile threatening to peek through. Billy certainly wore the rumbled shirt and trenchcoat a lot better than John ever did.

“John Constantine? Really?” Hal asked in a screeching voice. “The guys a two bit con artist and like not even a real member of the Justice League! He’s barely third string!”

“Whut can I say?” Billy said with a rakish grin and a horrific British accent. In his right hand, he held a blue lollipop like one would a cigarette. “Imma nasty piece of work.”

“Hey there Bill,” Clark sighed, also disappointed in the kid’s costume choice. The children’s Superman costumes were just too adorable and would have suited Billy much better than the Hellblazer in his opinion. “That’s an, er, interesting choice there, son.”

“Well, ya know how it goes,” Billy continued, slouching to the side and sliding a lazy hand into the trenchcoat pocket while he popped the lollipop back in his mouth. “We all got our demons, some o’ them are just more visible than others.”

“That’s a little too on the nose for my tastes,” Barry said with a grimace, imaging all the bad run-ins he’d had with the magician. “So we all agree that Bill needs his Constantine visiting hours cut short before he picks up any other bad habits.”

“Agreed,” Hal, Victor and Ollie agreed hastily.

“You wankers will get your knickers in a twist over anything,” Billy said, his blue eyes twinkling with mischief. He was very much aware of the stir he was causing and was enjoying it. He loved the League and respected them all but some days Billy felt like John was the only one who understood the real him, a dirty street rat just doing his best.

Billy reached into the inner pocket of his coat and pulled out a little flask. He fought back a smile as he undid the cap and took a long swig. He could tell them it was just apple juice but where was the fun in that?

Skye, Hal and the Dragon

Skye walked through the forest in a hurry. Where are you, Hal? He send a court message that he was leaving for a while, but she wasn't sure where and since he send it telepathically, she was the only one who knew too.

Hal still couldn't get used to the need to say things out loud. He would just broadcast his thoughts, in that gentle way of his, so he wasn't enforcing his mind, calm and friendly for whoever was recieving.

But she was the only one recieving of the mages on the Flying Islands Mind magic wasn't usual, normal or easy. People didn't learn it for fun. Heck, Leander still thought it was pretty useless and Zephyr still thought she needed to be more protected because of it. She didn't have the energy to argue with the first and she didn't have the heart to protest the latter. Skye liked being protected by Zephyr. It wasn't a cool independent thing to do, but she liked it.

Her flustered feelings made a few thorns sprout out from the ground next to her. She barely managed to change the course without walking straight into them.

Picking up her pace, she tried to ignore her sourroundings, the flush greenery of the towering redwood around her, the warm air filled with the mild spicy smell.

Her mind reached up and over the trees, seeing the world in gray silhouettes as her thoughts and magic rushed through, quick but thorough, running and running... until she felt it. The overwhelming, but familiar presence of Hal, bigger than the ancient trees, robust and hulking like the mountains on the Islands, floating through the clouds, each a separate segment, but holding the same position, as if chained together. He was liked that. A separate piece, and yet always part of the whole, part of the Islands themselves.

In her quick strides and vibrativing sense of victory upon finding him, she almost run the rest of the forest to the clearing. She should have checked longer, before retreating with her mind. That she was surprised upon seeing the dragon standing at the edge of the clearing was shameful for a mage of her caliber.

Somehow she has stopped being sensitive to their presence. They were kinda everywhere, coming from the forest, flying over the gates, napping under the stairs of the academy. And they were always recieving, so in a way, she wasn't pushing with her mind to them to be considerate?

She could present it like that. The truth was more simple though. She was scared.

It was amazing, being on the Islands. She loved how buzzing with life and magic they were, the unique floating, the various landscapes, from waterfalls and calm lakes, from mountains to flat fields, from wild natural cliffs to abondened cities of stone.

She loved the dragons. They were special creatures, intelligent, magical, different, and this was one of the only places they resided in. Her only chance to not only see them feetingly, but actually observe and interact with them. In theory she was excited about that, bubbly feelings of joy and promise rising in her chest.

But when she stood before this dragon, giant black serpent body with wings like pirate sheets on a giant boat, the piercing glare, the feeling turned to a sinking sensation and goosebumps on her arms. Because this creature could hurt her so easily, and that feeling didn't go away, just because she logically undertood it wouldn't.

The dragon looked in her direction them, infinite black pools of ink bearing into her. She shivered. Hesitated. Then hurried to Hal's side. It was rude to show fear in presence of allied dragons.

Hal was Hal and wasn't Hal. He was in the in between state, his body visible and concrete enough for his clothes to hang onto him, but the outline of his body was blurred and transculent, and he seemed to be hovering in space, just about to float away.

He was mind-sharing with the dragon, and so deeply, that his body was losing form. At least he wasn't shapeshifting into anything, like a bird or a rock, that would have been longer issue to deal with.

But like this, she could still just walk up to him, and by hugging him from behind, hold him in place. Apply pressure. Appeal to his physical human senses to bring him back.

It took a bit. She wasn't following exactly, because her eyes were closed, clenched shut so she wouldn't have to look at the dragon. Tempest was one of the oldest dragons on the Island, with a particular fondness for Hal. They all tended to find favourites among them very quickly. She couldn't see the transformation, but she felt how Hal's weight changed in her hands, how his body shifted, shook and then engled towards her, and he stumbled before he caught himself on his own two feet and got his balance.

"You here?" She asked out loud, deliberately, instead of checking with her mind.

Hal coughed and took a deep breath and reached out instead, but she blocked her thoughts, clear and strong like an ice wall between them.

He relented. "Wasn't far away."

"You almost slipped away."

A beat of silence.

"I would have come back." When she didn't reply, he added: "I will always come back."

Although there wasn't a reason for it anymore, she still held onto him from behind, his slim body solid in her hands. Her eyes still clenched, she realized she was leaning into him instead of holding him up now.

Hal didn't move. He let her.

Did he guess it wasn't just that she was worried he would dissolve into thin air? That she was holding him more for herself than for his sake now? Did he feel the tremor in her hands and guess what caused it?

What a stupid thing for a Dragon knight, fearing the Dragon.

Hal shifted on his feet again. Put his hand on hers, crossed over his waist. His skin was cold to the touch, featherlight, ghostly. Then he gently pried one hand away, gripping it tightly and guiding it to his side. He coaxed her clenched fingers in the open, while leaving the other hand clutching the fabric of his coat around his middle still.

They waited. She slowly opened her eyes. The dragon was still there. Hal didn't voice the fear they both knew out loud. Not in words, not in his thoughts. But she noticed upon seeing, that he stood more broadly, more directly in front of her, shielding her from the dragon he loved.

When she didn't say sorry, the sky darkened. A small drizzle started quickly, no preparation needed. Denying her feelings would soon start a rainstorm on the Islands.

Hal didn't move. The dragon, Tempest, kept looking at them. Skye kept casting quick glances in her direction, before looking away, holding onto Hal's hand, shielded by his back. Thankful. Yes that was the word she was looking for. She focused on that feeling, accepted it, took it deeply inside herself and then let it sicker through and outside.

The rain continued, but the sky tore in places, letting sunlight in. Hal turned his head to look at her from the side. Curious. Careful. Patient.

Skye took a deep breath, opened her mind to the dragon and smiled.

How Timothée Chalamet Channeled The Blockbuster Pressure of Leading Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ Back Into His Role – Venice Q&A

DEADLINE: In a few days Dune will premiere at the Venice Film Festival. You first met Denis Villeneuve about the role in May 2018 and started shooting in the early half of 2019. It was always going to be a long journey, but the pandemic stretched it even further. How does it feel to have finally arrived at this moment?

TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET: You know, I like to think that with every film I’ve done, whether it’s Call Me by Your Name or Beautiful Boy, The King, or Little Women, the character you play is almost a piece of your flesh. And that’s always true, but simply from the perspective of how long the shoot for Dune was, and also the arc that Paul Atreides is on, as well as the huge love and almost biblical connection that so many people have for the book and the original film, it really felt… tectonic, if that’s the right word for it. Just getting to this finish line feels like: phew.

And independent of what the film is now, and what it has become, the experience of making it was I was put in such a safe environment, which you can never take for granted as a human, as an actor, but especially when you’re just starting your career, and when this is the first film of this size you’ve ever done.

To get to work with Denis on it, to get to work with someone of his caliber, let alone on a book that he considers the book of his youth and one of the things he has connected to the most… When he would have it in his hands on set, his body language would become that of a fan; of a kid who had fallen in love with the book at home in Montreal. And when all the kids around him were wearing hockey jerseys with their favorite players’ names on the back, this was a kid wearing a jersey that said ‘Spielberg’ on the back.

For it all to come together, especially with the added challenge of the pandemic, it has all combined to make this moment feel especially spicy [laughs].

DEADLINE: The entire ensemble will show up in Venice.

CHALAMET: Right. And I just can’t believe it; Jason Momoa has the number one film on Netflix right now with Sweet Girl, which I just watched. And since we shot, Zendaya has had all this success with Euphoria and Malcolm & Marie. Just to be part of this cast, period, let alone as one of the title characters, it’s really the shit you dream of.

And let me not forget, too—and I know I’ve told you this before—that The Dark Knight was the movie that made me want to act. That movie had a score by Hans Zimmer, and he has done the score for Dune. And it’s almost not what you’d think. It’s totally appropriate and excellent for the movie, but he has somehow managed to do something subversive, in my opinion. It’s a pinch-me moment all over.

DEADLINE: So, take me back to the start. Is it true you had a Google alert set up to track the latest news on this project before you were ever cast?

CHALAMET: Yeah, it’s true [laughs]. Not right away—Legendary had the rights and was developing it—but as soon as Denis got involved, I set up a Google alert and that’s when I got the book.

In total honesty, I think my understanding of Dune at that point was from a graphic novel I’d seen at Midtown Comics when I was shopping for Yu-Gi-Oh! cards when I was about 10. The year you and I first met, when I was there at Deadline Contenders with Call Me by Your Name, that would have been 2017 or early 2018, and Denis was there with Blade Runner. I remember I was trying to put myself in front of him as much as possible and set up a meeting with him. We had a night at the BAFTA where one of my good friends, Stéphane Bak—who’s also an actor—saw Denis across the room and was like, “Hey buddy, he’s right over there.” So, we went over to talk to him. I kept trying to put myself in front of him, but I didn’t really get a sense of the possibility [of working with him].

I was about halfway through the book when I got the call that he was going to be the president of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival, and I was in London prepping The King. He asked me if I could come out there, so I quickly busted through the second half of the book as best I could. So, like, the first half of my copy is properly annotated and full of my thoughts, and then the second half I just raced through. And then I had that meeting with him, and it was such a joy.

I’m struggling with this even now, as I’m working with Paul King [on Wonka], because he’s another guy I have huge respect and admiration for, and it’s hard to feel on a level. Not that you ever are, because as an actor you’re a cog in the machine, and you’ve got to be humble to the vision of the director. But with Denis, he was pacing around the room, throwing ideas around, in some fancy suite in Cannes, and all I could think was that a year before I was just sat on a stoop on 9th Street in the East Village or something.

DEADLINE: Was that your first time in Cannes?

CHALAMET: Yeah. Well, bizarrely, my sister would do dance camps growing up. Ballet intensive programs in a town called Mougins, which is nearby Cannes, so I spent a lot of time there growing up, but never during the festival, and not on the Riviera. To get to be there for the festival was just nuts. I went to see the Romain Gavras movie, I think, and it was just a huge joy.

I got attached [to the role in Dune] a couple of months after that, and it was nerve-wracking from the announcement, because like I said before, the fans of the book, and the fans of David Lynch version, the computer game, and everything, there’s so much love and strength of feeling. And so much of our pop culture and films and books have been derived from Dune, and all the philosophy the book. I’ve been shocked to learn how many people have a next-level connection to the book. I compare it to how our generation grew up with Harry Potter, and that one makes sense to me. But it’s cool to see with Dune also, when you actually sit down and read it… It’s not that it’s a quote-unquote “hard read” or anything, but it’s not made to be consumed easily, I think that’s fair to say.

So, I was grateful to be working on something of this size not only with Denis Villeneuve leading it, who between Polytechnique, Incendies and Prisoners had nailed the smaller indie film across languages, and then had nailed Arrival and Blade Runner, but who, in his own words, he didn’t feel he’d made his greatest film yet. But also, to be working with this cast. I don’t know if there’s some nightmare version of a film where a young lead is not supported by the rest of his cast, where every one of them had been the leads in their own huge projects. But on this, everyone was there to support, and I think it’s because we all wanted to be foot soldiers for Denis, and I think we understood the potential, based on the script by Eric Roth, Jon Spaihts and Denis, that this could be something really special.

DEADLINE: I don’t have a connection to Dune; this movie is really my first experience of the story. What strikes me is this is clearly an enormous universe—a broad canvas being painted with various families and factions and politics and mythos—but that ultimately it comes down to very elemental, human themes, and we feel them through this character you play, Paul Atreides. Did those themes help ground the experience for you?

CHALAMET: Yes, and I would give the credit entirely to Denis. He would constantly say on set that he had some opposing drumbeat or something. In my diminished intellectual standing, I didn’t understand it, but it was like some vision for the movie based on how biblical the book is that tries to tackle so much that it doesn’t tackle anything. I think he felt the need to be close to a character in it, and Paul is that guy in the book. He’s a character that is still in formation, like a lump of clay, which makes him a great figure for the audience to mirror off.

It speaks, I think, to Denis’ premonition and his directing ability that there were times when we’d move on from a shot or move on from a scene, and I swear, literally, we’d go back because Denis wanted to get something over my shoulder, or push in on my reaction, just to make sure [it stayed on Paul].

And again, it’s something where I’m pinching myself. I had the best time on Interstellar, and that was one of my favorite films I’ve ever worked on, but it was very much something where I was aware of when I had the opportunity to do real acting. And on a movie like Dune, again, one could think it would get lost in the scale and scope. But I felt every day like my plate was full.

DEADLINE: One of those themes is fear, and Paul must overcome his to become the person he needs to be. When you are number one on the call sheet on a project of this scale, and the cast list reads like an address book of Hollywood in the 21st century, and Legendary has injected hundreds of millions of dollars into this production, and it’s all falling on your shoulders, I have to imagine fear is a theme you can readily relate to.

CHALAMET: Oh yeah, and they can bleed into each other for sure—not to diminish the other work that goes in. It’s great when your life experience can inform the role. That’s not at all to say I’m on some crusade in the universe or anything, but definitely… And I had that same good fortune with The King I think. My life is not nearly as significant or as exciting as Paul or Prince Hal, but we all share an unwitting needle in the haystack feeling. On The King that feeling was because I was so new to having a career. On Dune it’s because of, as you say, just feeling the pressure of the hugeness of the project in all those different ways. Those things can absolutely inform each other.

And then there are the moments of glee that come, too, like seeing Jason Momoa running at you at a hundred miles an hour, or just getting to shoot the shit with Josh Brolin, or getting to do a scene with Oscar Isaac. I felt so supported, whether it was Rebecca Fergusson or Charlotte Rampling. When Zendaya came, it was a total breath of fresh air, and she’s one of my favorite parts of the movie. I just got really lucky, and I can’t wait to see them all in Venice.

Denis split the book in half, and the hope is a second movie will get a greenlight. That’d expand Zendaya’s role in the story.

CHALAMET: Definitely, Chani will play a huge role in the next film. I don’t know if there’s a script yet, but just based on the book, along with Lady Jessica [Rebecca Fergusson], they have a lot to do together, let’s put it like that. And Zendaya was incredible in this movie; the moment she pulls the mask down, it felt properly showstopping and powerful. I was hiding behind the camera, counting my lucky starts, because I was there in month two of the shoot and here was a total powerhouse just coming in for the first time.

And as I said before, this was before I’d seen Euphoria and Malcolm & Marie. She’s doing such incredible work and is just trailblazing her own path, and she’s so, so cool. She also happens to be in the most-watched trailer of the moment, too, for Spider-Man: No Way Home. I cannot wait for that movie, and I was there, by the way, with everybody else, clicking through the trailer frame by frame looking for clues [laughs].
