finished watching the first 3 episodes of Gen V. I was super hesitant at first because honestly I don't watch The Boys for the supes and I was worried that the whole show was just going to be "everyone is a terrible person and they're all doing terrible things to each other as a spectacle" but I am SO glad that it's not that.

I was especially expecting Cate to be a huge asshole to everyone and Marie to be edgy and standoffish to everyone so finding out that they're both genuinely kind people that are struggling with the social dynamics that come with being a superhero was such a welcome suprise. Same thing with Luke tbh, I expected him to be a Homelander clone but he's so much better than I expected.

#welcome to another Mick Airs Out Their Grievances and by god is it a VERY long one #prob best if u don't expand the tags #am I being maybe a bit meaner about this than I would be for any other movie? maybe but pac rim is one of my favorite movies of all time #so I think I get a pass on this one. #one of the groups on campus is hosting movie nights & I went to this one bc I've only ever watched pac rim on my laptop and wanted to watch #it on a larger screen. yay yippee I love this movie! #there r maybe 10-ish of us in this room and a three person friend group is sitting on the couch one of whom has seen the movie and two who #have not. okay so far so normal. #and then the movie starts and they won't! stop! fucking! commentating! the whole fucking movie!!! I don't have a problem with doing that #when I'm in just my friend group because I know that I can tell my friend to stop talking or pause the movie or whatnot but not when I'm in #a large group w people I'm not good friends with ffs #and the comments aren't even funny or anything they're all oh this is JUST like in iron widow!! oh they're SO gay and autistic!!! and #they're talking so loud about this that it completely drowns out the movie audio which has already been turned up a few times #like. be considerate!! some of us want to yknow actually listen to what's going on and not whatever bullshit you're saying #I nearly walked out three or four times before I actually wound up doing so #I may have been a bit of a bitch at the end but I don't care. I got up to leave because this was not an enjoyable environment and one of #them offered to turn the movie down if it was too loud. this caught me a bit off guard since I expected them to still be so wrapped up in #their convo and. well. I may have said 'it's not the movie that's too loud' before closing the door #this also reminds me a lot about my issues with online shipping culture and it bleeding through into how we interact with media irl #this is probably heavily influenced by my aromanticism but I'm so sick of people constantly reading romantic relationships into everything #AND placing more importance on those relationships than any other form. I don't mind romance in media. I think if done right it has great #emotional impact on a story but when a movie is running and when other people who may not want to hear it are in the room watching it too #is not the time to be loudly saying 'he's autistic!' 'they're in love!' 'she has a crush on him!' #I have my own interpretations of the movie some of which agree with what they said and some of which don't but that's beside the point of #knowing how to coexist politely in public #anyway. ok so. I know everyone has their opinion on how whiny Koth is and that's a beaten dead horse but I think a huge under-looked part of it is how the game engine animates anger. take a look at Koth's face here, the famous frown which regularly puts players off-- including me at one point, because he looked absolutely livid over the news of a breakup, which startled me at the intensity of his expression.

makes you think wow this guy's emotional, doesn't it? and as a reaction to a few small conflicts, it doesn't feel good.

but then take a look at how KOTXX animates a frown on Lana and Theron:

INCREDIBLY ANGRY OVERREACTIONS.

SWTOR tends to make anger appear as a bulging of the eyes, which is a little terrifying, since it signifies extreme rage. Case in point:

I think a huge part of why Koth appears so abrasive to the playerbase is his expressions: he is overanimated and frowns with his entire face in a way that is almost comical in the same way the other companions frown *far* too much to the point of looking like TF2 caricatures, which makes him seem far pettier than he actually is.

I really believe his delivery would be helped if expressions weren't so strong and made subtler in SWTOR's engine, but he already was at a disadvantage with being made to disagree more often and therefore use that frown more than the others, which made his image worsen in player eyes. (Though his popularity shouldn't hinge on whether he agrees or not).

The point is, even as someone who likes the character even I was thrown off by how furious he looked to innocuous lines. His voice delivery was fairly neutral. His face wasn't. Would the same vehement dislike towards him exist if he wasn't animated in the same way?

#part of it is bias. we know this already as well #and an unforgiving playerbase who pushes back harder on a character who reacts strongly #i'm not saying he can't frown or show his anger #but i'm saying it's cartoonishly shown and sort of....doesn't line up a lot of times #if it wasn't such a twisting of the face (which we see plenty on the PC as well) #i think he wouldn't look like he's overreacting when his voice isn't #swtor #swtor meta #koth vortena #also getting that face in regards to a breakup was. a little scary #i wish he'd gotten a sad expression instead #this pic actually isn't that bad since i couldn't find my screens of him and just got it in google #but he does frown a lot more in other cs i think people remember though. or look it up on yt and try #comparing his expression to his voice lines

But a genuinely hilarious book that is also poignant and tragic and so /so/ compelling #The more work you put into it the more you get out of it and I get so sad every time I see people #not wanting to look deeper than what's beyond the surface #Pyrrhus gets the extremely high honour of Greek Myth Retelling That is Actually Good #it's less about the Trojan War and more about the journey there set in the 1980s gay scene #the cursed spot that gets Philoctetes abandoned is an effective allegory right until the moment it isn't an allegory at all #and you should see the gut punch coming but somehow you don't #The Scarecrow is my Token Kiwi Representation and it's also the one that got me into the genre I now write almost exclusively #reading it feels like watching a cheesy low budget slasher that accidentally says some really interesting things about sexism and misogyny #(I say accidentally because it is the 20s and my tutor very loudly hated this book for being sexist) #(and I both totally agree and disagree because Prue is the prototypical final girl and needs an adaptation that does her justice) #Also the story of this novel's publication is freaking hilarious and why I will only write under a pseudonym because I would be next #Unnatural History is an exact blueprint of what I love about sci-fi done well in the way we've only very recently started to see on screen #and I hate that the show of Doctor Who rarely if ever reaches this level #Tunnels of Blood is my favourite of the Darren Shan Saga but really is just a stand in for the entire series #yes it's a kids series but it's a kid series that got me into horror and surrealism #and delivers the most effective and heartbreaking plot twist that not even Hannibal pulled off as well #The Coffin Dancer is just some damn good crime fiction and I wish Jeffery Deaver wasn't so slept on #(yes I know The Bone Collector got an adaptation but The Bone Collector isn't even in the top ten of the Lincoln Rhyme series) #unfortunately Deaver's strongest point is his use of point of view #but he still manages to get the twist to be shocking (and Coffin Dancer is the best example of it) in a way that other media fails at #Hero is about a gay disabled teen with superpowers and somehow tumblr does not know about it #It is such a fun riff on superheroes while also being genuinely sweet and touching and sad #It was meant to get a tv show but the writer passed so it got stuck in production hell :( #Frankenstein is Frankenstein. It's just good on like every level. Victor is my problematic fave. I will take no criticism. #I am however on my knees hoping the Guillermo Del Toro adaptation finally gets it right #one flew over the cuckoo's nest means so much to me but no one ever talks about it beyond the Ratched and Mcmurphy stuff #who are the least interesting characters to me. And I find the debate about the sexism ignores that the novel is about the structural abuse #of the mentally ill

I feel so horrible

#last evening i spilled tea it was obv an accident but i should have been more careful it was through a too careless action #some spilled on the book i got from the library. i thought that was the worst part #a bit spilled on my laptop. very little. while i was busy with the book my mom wiped my laptop #my brother immediately turned it off & told me to keep it upside down overnight #so i put it upside down. for hours. at least 4. before that i picked it up to look i could still see the water #but my laptop reacted to me picking it up & showed the battery percentage on the screen like it does #i didnt do anything else and put it back upside down. so again later i picked it up to check #it look dry. this time it didnt react to my ''touch'' to me picking it up #i didnt think anything. i wanted to do something on my laptop and tried powering it on. idk if that was a mistake or not #but it didnt react. the night is over it's almost noon it's still not turning on. it's been in rice the whole night #but honestly i dont even know if that actually helps. i know it's a popular method but idk #my brother works in IT he knows computers he said he'd unscrew & remove the storage disk to be safe #and to call someone they know who repairs computers. neither of these things happened yet bc we dont have the right screw #my brother i believe asked the neighbor #i'm not really hopeful. i've slept 4 hours last night bc i was so worried i couldnt sleep #went to sleep at 3 woke up at 7 couldnt sleep again #i said i'm not hopeful but one thing about me i never think bad things like this could happen to me so there's always this #''it's not real this isnt happening'' in me. i wish it wasnt bc if it turns out to be real it devastates me #i feel i get swayed so easily by things going wrong. it just immobilizes me #it happened when my luggage got lost. i was completely scatter brained fully gone when it happened #i was staying at my aunt's place. she poked fun at me for how much it affected me. said i have euros i could raplace my clothes #i spent four days this way. i was there to see a friend. i felt i was robbed from truly having a good time. it was our first time meeting #i cried every single day. called the airport lost & found every single day. this one thing occupied my whole being #i got my luggage back but what i'm getting at is for one i actually got it back so it wasnt a real bad thing that happened. it got fixed #and two it just had me in its clutches this one incident. so now my laptop wont turn on i cant think of anything else #cant do anything else. and although it looks real and i DONT want to be hopeful so i can let go and not be devastated when i find out #it's irreparable. idk where i'm getting at with this. except idk i really really really want it to work again #nesi rants
