Hey I saw you talk about comprehensible input for Spanish, and you said it was easy and it seems effective. I'm learning German, and I wanna ask what comprehensible input is and how I could do some of that
Comprehensible input means watching or listening to stuff in the language where you understand 90% or more of what’s going on. If you’re reading it’s more like 98%. Early on this usually means either watching stuff for babies or watching stuff made for adult learners if that exists. Watching stuff for adult learners is generally better because it works better if you’re interested in what’s going on. Once easier stuff is too boring for you then you move on to slightly harder stuff etc etc. it’s supposed to take about a thousand hours of good quality input for you to be able to understand native speakers with no issues give or take depending on your native language and the language you’re studying. Right now I’m at like 50-ish hours in Spanish which means I’m watching slightly harder videos that still have a lot of visual cues but it’s not piss easy either. I can also understand most quick things I overhear people say on the street to each other but I don’t really know how to talk yet. My brain hasn’t pieced that part together.
For German specifically resources for this are YouTube channels like Comprehensible German and Natürlich German. And Deutsch Welle’s learn German section of their website has a couple series like Nico’s Weg that follow a similar idea.
The key is to not translate in your head or assign meaning to specific words or try to figure out the grammar when you watch videos or read but just try to understand what’s going on.
Some people supplement this with flash cards strictly doing vocabulary and no grammar. Especially if good comprehensible input resources aren’t available for the language you’re studying. Doing vocabulary drills and watching tv with subtitles in the language you’re learning can also be effective.
Another way to do this if you can’t afford a special class or there’s no good videos available but you do have native speakers on hand who are willing to be a “language parent” for you is for them to sit down with you and only teach you the words for yes and no and then they pick up something like a kids picture book and start pointing at things and slowly explaining it to you and asking you questions like you’re a baby for an hour or two every day. Most people do not have a native speaker on hand willing to do this though. But if you do then this video where a guy documents learning Arabic with this method should give both you and the native speaker an idea of how this works.
If you want resources googling “comprehensible input (language)” should get you started. There’s also a lot of different communities for language learners of different languages or language learning generally on Reddit like r/French, r/Portuguese, r/swahili or r/languagelearning for example. Most of those places have a dedicated page for compiling resources from the community and you can also ask questions to the community and in my experience they’re usually pretty helpful people.
Right now I’m mostly using Dreaming Spanish for Spanish but also other channels like Easy Spanish and Español con Juan. I’m also dabbling a bit in the channels Comprehendible Japanese and Nihongo-Learning for Japanese but Spanish is my main priority right now.

WHEN MC IS BILINGUAL
You speak the common language with the brothers, but because of your culture and nationality, you actually know how to speak another language (what you can speak is up to you ofc).
This is under the idea that despite being ancient demons, they don’t bother learning about how to speak other human languages and you guys communicate through English ">_<)!!
------------
Lucifer
He already knew this when he viewed your profile during the exchange student selection. It was already on your form so he guessed that you knew one or more languages.
He doesn’t admit it, but whenever you start talking in another language it fascinates him. That part of you makes you unique to his eyes after all.
If he had the time, he would love to learn about your language and maybe how to speak it himself. But with all the paperwork he has in the student council? Maybe he’ll save that idea for another date.
He would love spending time and learning new words from you, even about your culture, over a glass of Demonus.
It’s funny to him when he watches you struggle trying to translate a word from your native language to english. He finds it cute even.
“Tell me, how do you say endearing in your language? Because that’s what you are to me right now, love.”
Mammon
He found out once when you both were caught by Lucifer doing something up to no good. You muttered something under your breath and Mammon spent the entire lecture trying to think what you actually said.
You had to explain to him that you grew up knowing how to speak two different languages and he won’t believe you until you try to say a phrase.
Boy is shocked. You’re not only smart and reliable, but now he thinks you’re cool too!
He would probably keep asking you to translate a lot of words in your language. But given it’s Devildom, you have to explain that they’re too foreign to translate.
“Hey MC, Can ya teach me how to say ‘Lucifer is an Idiot’ in your language? If i learned then he won’t even know it!”
There’s a big chance he’ll butcher the pronunciation. Plus, Lucifer caught on quickly and scolded Mammon before giving you a warning of teaching him inappropriate phrases next time.
Levi
When one of the characters he was watching spoke in your language, he was so shocked to know that you were able to understand the language without subtitles.
To him it’s amazing! at least you’ll get to enjoy all the mangas and animes in more languages. To him, that’s a dream.
He would ask how certain phrases from TSL would sound if you translated it. It would be fun to imagine if Henry can speak another language like you can.
If the Lord of Shadow and Henry had lines together, he would love to learn how to speak them with you.
“I-it’ll be like they have their own secret language together! To make their bond stronger! So I wanted to learn how to say a few words i-if it’s okay with you?”
He would fumble a bit but if he really puts his mind to it, he’ll be fluent in a few phrases.
Satan
He saw that you were reading a book and when he asked to see what it was, he was shocked to see it in a language he couldn't understand.
He starts to ask more about your language and literature exclusively available in it, at least the ones you remember at the top of your head.
Would be probably the one who would put more of an effort to learn your language, even the semantics and honorifics.
He feels that learning your language would help him grow closer to you at a much deeper and personal level.
“Of course I think that learning how to read in it is exciting, but I really want to be able to connect to you more. Would you teach me this time?”
Give him enough time and he’ll be fluent in it. He has this devious smirk whenever his brothers get jealous every time you both have conversations they can’t understand.
Asmo
The moment he heard you say something in a different language, he would cup your face and look into your eyes with so much interest and curiosity “say that again darling?”
Would have the biggest smile on his face every time you speak your language around him because at least you’re comfortable doing so around him.
Though every time you do, he will not stop pestering until you tell him what it means.
He’d probably joke about wanting to learn phrases to help enhance his charms and seduction to a broader audience.
“Sweetie of course I was joking! But it makes me wonder. If I did learn, would that make you fall for me more?”
Knowing that you can speak another language makes him want to brag to other demons. Nothing about you is ordinary at all, and this just adds up to the list of what makes you so special to him.
Beel
During your stay in the twins room, it was brought up in one of your conversations with him and since then he’s been fascinated.
Would ask a lot about the culture you grew up from, especially food related ones if you have native dishes.
He would probably ask you about any translations that revolve around the language of food. The first phrase he’d probably memorize is “I’m hungry”
Though it helps, because it’s like your secret code for you to grab him a few snacks since you understood. He would whisper that during class and you’d hand him the little snacks that you bring along everywhere for these occasions.
“I think it’s cool that you can speak another language. It’s just like us demons then. We’re not too different.”
Whenever you’d express yourself in your own language, there’s a small smile on his face. It’s like he’s seeing a different and more personal side of you.
Belphie
He knew that humans can speak several languages during the early times that he stayed up in the human realm, though he didn’t expect you’d be one of them.
He’s half-awake when he heard you the first time but didn’t believe it, until he caught you trying to explain a phrase to Beel.
Since he was the last of the brothers to find out (due to his time in the attic) then he’d whine and ask you to entertain his questions.
The interest and curiosity he had when he first loved humans never left, he just won't admit it but you can still see it in his eyes when you talk about your world.
“You know how me and Beel have some sort of telepathic connection? I want that for us too MC.”
Just like Satan, he would’ve loved to learn your language. If only his drowsiness didn’t get in his way from actually learning it, since sometimes he would fall asleep mid lesson.

Hello there! I hope you’re doing well, I was wondering if you could do a few head cannons or a ficlet (whichever you prefer) where the brothers (and/or dateables) find out that MC is multilingual.
I’m mostly thinking in the context that they didn’t know before and suddenly hear MC speaking said language, but you can change that if you prefer of course! Or not do the request entirely if this idea doesn’t strike your fancy.
Have a nice day/night!
Hi, anon!
Okay I wasn't sure if multilingual meant MC speaks two languages or if it's like more than two, so I kinda did a little bit of both. And really I think everything could apply to either option, so hopefully that all still makes sense!
Thank you for the request!
Tumblr media
brothers react to hearing GN!MC speaking in a different language
Warnings: none!
Tumblr media
Lucifer
When he first hears it, he’s sure he’s just tired. He’s never heard you speak any other language before. Surely his mind is playing tricks on him. Starts thinking he must really need to take a break like everyone is always saying.
If you do it again, then he’ll ask. MC, are you multilingual? Demonstrate all the languages you speak. However many it is, he's impressed. He wants to know the details of how you learned this language. Tell him more about it.
He will ask you to teach him the language so he can speak it with you. Really loves it when he gets fluent and can carry on conversations with you that other people don’t understand. He will say all kinds of things with the sole purpose of making you blush.
Lucifer will find records of music that’s sung in languages you know. Might ask you for a translation of the lyrics, but mostly just wants to share the experience with you. Sit with him in the music room to listen and he won’t be able to stop himself from holding you close, whispering sweet sayings that you've taught him in your ear.
Mammon
Woah! MC! Since when could ya speak more than one language? You’re always surprising him with the things you can do!
He will ask you to teach him all the swear words. Says them to Lucifer under his breath more because it makes you laugh than because he really means it.
Wants to know the circumstances in which you learned this language. Is it your native tongue? Or did you just learn a whole new language for some reason? Either way you had to learn a second language at some point and that sounds like a lot of work. Wouldn’t do it himself but he’s impressed that you could.
Actually picks up parts of the language pretty easily. Depending on how often you use it around him, Mammon will be able to imitate your most used phrases. He’ll say stuff without knowing what it actually means, he’s just repeating you. If you tell him what it means and how to use it, it will just become part of his own speech from that point on. Only says lovey things when the two of you are alone.
Leviathan
The first time he hears you speaking it, he’s confused. What was that? Did you just speak in a different language? Quick, MC! Tell him all the different languages you know!
Instantly wants to hire you to translate any media that’s in a language he can’t speak. Video games, manga, shows, movies, even songs! If you insist on teaching him so he can do it himself, he’ll actually be excited to learn. Teach him everything!
Absolutely will watch movies and shows in any languages you speak with you. He’s gonna need subtitles. He’ll ask you about how accurate the subs are. Makes you go through every single line and complains about any inaccuracies you guys find. Posts your translations in online forums.
Talk to him in your language and he’ll be flustered even if he has no idea what you’re saying. You could be telling him to clean his room, but it sounds so romantic? Now he’s blushing like crazy. Levi actually really likes to hear you speak to him in a different language. If he's learning it for himself, he won't get as flustered if he knows what you're actually saying. Either way, he's going to hesitantly ask you to say it again.
Satan
You’re sitting near each other somewhere when you ask a question out loud in a different language. Without looking up or missing a beat, Satan answers your question in the same language. Several moments pass before the two of you look at each other in surprise. Then you both launch into a conversation in that language about how surprised you are that the other person knows it.
This guy has spent many years learning all kinds of languages and that includes human world ones. His main goal was to be able to read books in their native languages rather than translations. But it turns out he’s just good at it so he speaks pretty fluently too.
Now that he knows this about you, he’s almost always talking to you in a language the others doesn’t understand. Finds it especially entertaining to discuss his prank ideas with you while Lucifer is sitting right there.
Do not think for one second that he’s not going to take this opportunity to recite poetry in that language to you. Blushes the whole time, but does it anyway. Please indulge him, MC. You are the only one who can truly appreciate these romantic lines.
Asmodeus
Did he just hear you speaking in a different language? Oh, MC, you’re so full of surprises! He has no idea what you just said, but he is swooning! Please flirt with him in your language, he’s really going to fall even harder for you now. You could say anything but if you do it in the right tone of voice you will get a dramatic reaction from him.
Teach him how to say “I love you” and things like “hug me” and “kiss me.” Know that once you do, he’ll be saying them to you all the time. Asmo might ask you to teach him some insults, too, just so he can use them on unsuspecting demons who have no idea what he's saying.
Designs some clothes with sayings in your language on them. Won’t tell anyone what they mean - he only knows because you told him. But everybody else is just going to have to wonder about it! This is a secret between the two of you! (Well, and everybody else who speaks that language… but that is not the point.)
Might start learning the rest of the language without you knowing. Gets Satan to help him. Then when you’re alone with him he starts saying a whole speech about how much he loves you. Giggles happily at the look on your face before kissing you.
Beelzebub
The first time he hears you, he thinks he must have heard wrong. Blinks in confusion. What was that you said, MC? He’s not sure he heard you right. Explain to him that you were actually speaking a different language and he’ll be even more surprised.
He wants to know more about it. Where did you learn it and why? Beel asks you about the names of food. He doesn’t want to learn them necessarily he just wants to hear you say them.
If you tend to refer to a specific food in the other language, he will start calling it that too. Just straight up replaces that word in his vocabulary. Might do this for non food related things as well. Pretty much just does that thing where he picks up little words and phrases from you simply because he's absorbed it from being around you so much.
He likes to listen to you speak in a different language, even if he can't understand anything you're saying. Might ask you to say anything just so he can listen to the sound of your voice. You could read a dictionary to him and he would be all about it. Content to just sit quietly and listen.
Belphegor
The only one who doesn't even notice at first. It's not that he doesn't care, it's just that it doesn't even register. For some reason, it seems perfectly normal to him that you speak multiple languages. He considers you to be a smart person, someone on Satan's level, and Satan knows several languages, so why wouldn't you?
After he hears you using that language a few times, he gets curious. He doesn't know what you're saying, but he does realize if you're using the same language, especially in the same context. Always letting out a string of it when you hurt yourself? Maybe you rant in that language when you're frustrated? He recognizes the sound of it.
Now he's going to ask you about it. What language is this, MC? Tell him about it, please. He'll ask you to teach him how to say things like "take a nap with me" and "Lucifer sucks." The first time he says that last one, Satan does a spit take.
Belphie will ask you to sing in your language. He wants to hear some songs that were originally written in it. He's especially interested in lullabies. If you sing him one, he'll fall asleep on your lap pretty quickly. Might get needy and ask you to sing to him every night.

Daughter Daddies - 10-Year Time Skip - Sub vs Dub Comparison
I’m going to make a proper post for both Episodes 11 and 12, but I wanted to make a short, separate post for the Daughter Daddies segment of Buddy Daddies in Episode12. Having watched this scene in both sub and dub, I’m thinking the disconnect that some people are getting from the character interactions here are from a combination of two things:
1. The one degree of separation that comes about from listening to one language but reading the interaction in another. We know which characters are saying what words and we can see the way the characters are emoting and interacting with each other, but there is still a disconnect with the language being spoken and the translation being read.
2. The sub translations for Buddy Daddies have been extremely good. But having watched the series both subbed and dubbed, I feel that the dub translation comes out a bit more on top. I think that comes from the fact that there is a little more freedom and wiggle room to work with and dub translations tend to fit spoken language better/more, while sub translations tend to lean more into written language and direct translations a bit more. In most cases, these differences don’t really matter, but with this 10 Year Time Skip scene in Buddy Daddies, I really do think it makes all the difference.
And I think that disconnect that some people feel from that time skip scene is due to the combination of these two factors. It resulted in the sub not really being able to capture the back-and-forth/play off of each other nature of Kazuki, Rei, and Miri in the scene that the English dub is able to properly capture. There is a flow there between the three characters that you can hear in the Japanese, but can’t quite see happening in the subtitles.
I’ll try to show that aspect as clearly as I can in this comparison post, but I also highly suggest just giving the Daughter Daddies segment in Ep. 12 a watch in the English dub to really see (and hear) what I mean.
Anyway, let’s dive in!
-----
There really isn’t much difference in the scene where Miri is up in her room and Kazuki calls her down, so I’ll start with when Miri is down in the diner area with Kazuki and Rei.
Tumblr media
Sub Miri: Papa Rei! Papa Kazu! Ta-dah! (Rei & Kazu: Oh!) Well?
Sub Rei: A high school student.
Sub Miri: Bingo!
------
Dub Miri: Papa Rei! Papa Kazuki! Ta-dah! (Rei: Nice!, Kazu: Hey!) How do I look?
Dub Rei: Like a high school student.
Dub Miri: Ding-ding-ding! (They had her say this with the Santa snow art scene too).
Thoughts: It’s small, but the addition of Kazuki and Rei actually say things like “Nice!” and “Hey!” (a “Hey” like in “Hey! Looking good!”) and having Miri ask specifically how she looks, instead of just “Well” and having that question be connected to Rei’s answer with “Like” instead of just “A high school student” helps with the flow and connectiveness of the scene.
Tumblr media
Sub Kazu: I’m so glad you didn’t break bad!
Sub Miri: What in the heck?
----
Dub Kazu: I’m so relieved that you never ended up breaking bad!
Dub Miri: Huh? Breaking bad...?
Thoughts: It’s small, but by having Miri repeat the “breaking bad” part as a question also helps with that flow I was talking about above and with it feeling like a more connected conversation.
Tumblr media
Sub Kazu: When you’re a parent, there’s so much to worry about. The ten years I spent since opening this diner really paid off!
Dub Kazu: You don’t know what it’s like! Parents have so much to worry about! That’s why I decided to open this diner ten years ago, and devote my life to honest work for your sake.
Tumblr media
Sub Rei: Honest work?
Sub Miri: Didn’t you slip out yesterday to go drinking with a girl again?
Sub Kazu: That doesn’t count!
----
Dub Rei: Really?
Dub Miri: I seem to recall someone cutting out early yesterday to go drinking with the ladies.
Dub Kazu: Sorry, what was that?
Thoughts: In the Japanese, Rei does parrot back, “Honest work?” like he does in the sub, but I feel that comes across a bit differently than it does in English. Here the “Really?” sounds a bit more teasing and being more general, and feels less accusatory in nature, more just disbelieving about Kazuki’s statement in general.
Meanwhile, Miri’s English dub statement clarifies that the doubt that both Rei and Miri express in regards to “honest work” is very specifically about the fact that Kazuki left work early, not that he was drinking with a lady or ladies. Also, Miri saying “drinking with the ladies,” makes it clear that he was likely at a Fairy Lips like establishment and really just out for drinks with them. Not on a date with a lady in particular or anything like that.
The Fairy Lips establishment worked in a similar way as a hostess bar, just with a gambling aspect as well, so nothing sexual (as in sexual acts) are actually allowed (though, I have no doubt that they do sometimes happen at establishments like that). But the true appeal of those places are the illusions of sex and just female company in general.
Tumblr media
Sub Rei: Miri. Eat.
-----
Dub Rei: Eat up, Miri.
Thoughts: By having Rei say, “Eat up, Miri,” instead of just “Miri. Eat,” the feel comes off less like a command and more like a general statement that the food is ready for her to eat. There’s a softness to “Eat up, Miri.” Still a command in some ways, but gentler. I also think that in English, one word verbal commands always come off as could and harsh on some level, while in Japanese having a verb just existing on its own is way more common and therefore doesn’t hold the same sort of feel to it. Of course, since we know Rei as a character, we also know that Rei doesn’t mean anything harsh by “Miri. Eat,” but there is likely still a left over feeling of coldness or distance there.
----
The Rei and Miri exchange of her saying thanks for the food, him asking her how it is, and her saying it’s yummy as always is pretty much the same as the sub without any substantial changes or differences. Basically, nothing worth mentioning here.
Tumblr media
Sub Kazu: I’m glad you got a signature dish with that toast, but shouldn’t you expand your repertoire a little?
Sub Rei: But why?
Sub Kazu: Ever the one-trick pony...
Sub Miri: Hey, it’s fine! Since Papa Rei’s the best!
----
Dub Kazu: Listen, I know the toast is your signature dish, and that’s great, but shouldn’t you expand your repertoire?
Dub Rei: What for?
Dub Kazu: You are such a one-trick pony.
Dub Miri: Hey! There’s nothing wrong with that. The important thing is that his one-trick pony is yummy!
Thoughts: The use of “listen,” and “that’s great” definitely makes Kazuki’s statement to Rei feel more like general constructive criticism, while Miri’s words in the dub come off more like a warm teasing (like this is possibly a conversation that they’ve had before, lol). Kazuki’s “You are such a one-trick pony” statement also comes off more as more as a warm, sentimental line sort of thing.
The sub translation comes off a bit colder. The way Kazuki’s first line is structured sounds more like just general criticism, as does the “ever” part in his one-trick pony line. Miri’s line as feels less connected, even though it is still on topic, so the comradery feel found in the dub is less present. Of course, tone also matters here and I think the dub really allows for the more teasing and warm tone of the scene to come across than the sub does since, as I mentioned, there is a bit of a disconnect with subs that isn’t as present with dubs.
Tumblr media
Sub Kazu: It’s fine like this, right?
Sub Miri: It’s not! Come on, we’re family!
Sub Rei: Family?
Sub Kazu: Can’t be helped, right?
Sub Rei: Hey-!
-----
Dub Kazu: Can’t we make it work like this?
Dub Miri: No way! C’mon, we’re family, aren’t we?
Dub Rei: Well, are we?
Dub Kazu: Get over here, you big lug!
Dub Rei: Hey-!
Thoughts: The dub translation makes things a bit clearer by adding more words and context. In the sub, Kazuki just questions, “It’s fine like this” but what is meant by “it”? The dub line makes the “it” easier to figure out. Adding “can’t we,” “make,” and “work” together with the it makes it clear that the “it” here is referring specifically to the photo arrangement that they had going on (Kazuki and Rei on either side of Miri).
Miri’s lines are largely the same, but by adding “aren’t we?” to the end of it, and then having Rei parrot that with a “well” in front of it, gives a feeling of Rei and Miri sort of coming together in solidarity on this, a little teasing on their end. And Kazuki just going all in on it, with the dub giving him a line that implies a lot of sentimentality on Kazuki’s part towards Rei. “Big lug” is a term of endearment, and implies someone (usually a man) with a strong physique, but a gentle personality, which does fit Rei.
The Japanese does have Kazuki saying the Japanese equivalent of “can’t be helped,” but...A lot of Japanese translators view that translation of the phrase as being overused and not necessarily the best translation all the time based on situation and context. And this would be one situation and context where I think it doesn’t quite work.
Kazuki is being put on the spot by both Rei and Miri, “we are a family, right,” him saying otherwise wouldn’t be right and they all know that, while Miri has made it clear that they can’t do their usual photo arrangement, they have to try something new. So, yes, in a sense there is “no helping” the situation. But by the way Kazuki latches onto Rei,bringing him into a one-armed hug, and the huge smile on his face, we know this isn’t a sort of ‘-sigh- can’t be helped!’ kind of situation that that phrase often implies in English.
The dub translation of choosing to translate that as “Get over here, you big lug!” easily implies that Kazuki has accepted this new arrangement for their photo and that they are, of course, a family. The dub has Kazuki use a slangy term of endearment, because that is within his personality. He uses slang and overfamiliar grammar and words, so he would say something like that.
I think the dub does a great job of capturing this new change in the Kurusu family! <3

When I invited Spencer over for a movie night and told him that he could pick what we should watch, I really thought that he had caught onto the playful tone in my voice. We had met at a bar last weekend and ended up making out in public like some hormone-driven teenagers and I haven’t been able to think about anything else all week. I really thought that we would continue that tonight.
However, when he showed up at my door with a 3-hour long Russian sci-fi movie from the 70s, I realized that he might not have gotten my hint.
“Don’t worry,” he said when he noticed my raised eyebrows as I held the DVD in my hands, “there are English subtitles. I don’t have to do whisper translations.”
“Having your lips close to my face would sound nice, though,” I snickered while motioning for him to sit down on my couch. His cheeks took on a lovely pink shade at my words.
After starting the movie I found my place beside him and noticed the scent of his cologne. It instantly brought me back to the moment he stood in front of me in the bar last week when he seemed so confident and strong. Tonight he gave off a very different vibe. Spencer seemed nervous and I found that very endearing.
Instead of paying attention to the movie, my eyes glanced over at him every now and then while the Russian speaking actors became background noise to my wandering thoughts. We were sitting close enough for me to feel the heat his body radiated but there was still a gap between us. His eyes were glued to the screen but I could sense that his thoughts weren’t solely preoccupied by the movie.
His fingers were nervously fidgeting against each other as if he had trouble keeping them in place and not letting them wander to the person sitting by his side. His touch would have been welcomed but he kept his composure, not daring to focus on anything other than the screen. I really tried watching the movie with him because he seemed so excited about it. I would have loved to be able to talk about it afterwards, to hear his thoughts and to learn why he liked it so much.
But any attempts to focus my attention on the TV were futile when I had the most gorgeous man I had ever seen sitting right beside me. So instead, I accepted my fate and let myself get lost in the fantasy of crawling into his lap to show him what my interpretation of a movie night really was. If only I had the courage to actually do it.
The more I thought about doing what I so desperately craved, the louder my heart was thumping against my ribcage. It was a silly thought but I was convinced that he might have been able to hear my heartbeat if he hadn’t been so focussed on the actors instead. My eyes fell to his hands, still fumbling against each other, and my skin started tingling at the thought of his fingertips brushing over my body.
I started to wonder whether Spencer was too coy to initiate contact or if he actually only came over to watch this movie with me. Trying to remember who initiated the kiss when we met, I lost myself in the memory of the sensation of his lips against mine. They were soft but demanding at the same time and the way he held my body against his made me feel like I was the only woman on this planet he would ever want to touch.
The tingling I felt on my skin quickly evolved into a burning sensation only his touch could soothe. My cheeks felt hot when I remembered how he pushed me into a wall when we kissed and my knees started to get weak just like they did then. I wanted to feel like that again. I needed to feel like that again.
“This part actually foreshadows something very important happening later on,” Spencer’s words brought me back to reality.
I turned my head to look at him like a doe caught in headlights and I think he may have noticed the cluelessness in my look. Instead of calling me out on it, he smiled at me before looking at the screen once more and said, “But it’s almost impossible to catch on everything when you watch it for the first time.”
Truth be told, after thirty minutes of watching this movie with him I still had no clue what it actually was about. The longer I sat by his side, the more I lost interest in finding out. There were other things I longed to explore and I needed to know if he felt the same way. To test the waters, I shifted my position beside him and moved a little closer until our thighs touched. I noticed how he instantly stopped moving his hands and turned his head to look at me.
“Is that okay?” I breathed.
He granted me his beautiful smile. “More than okay.”
That was all I needed to hear to lean against him and nestle into his side. He placed his arm around me and put it on my shoulder to pull me further into his body until my head was resting against his chest. My fingertips found his hand, inviting it to make contact with mine. He didn’t hesitate and intertwined his fingers with mine as if he had been waiting for me to make the first move all along.
It was comfortable being this close to him and it soothed my yearning for now. His hand around my body descended from my shoulder to my upper arm, gently grazing over my skin until it broke out in goosebumps. We stayed like this for a few moments and I relished the sensation of being close to Spencer. I felt his heartbeat against the side of my face ever so slightly and I thought I could relax and focus on the movie for once.
That was until I heard the thumping of his heart getting stronger and faster and noticed his fingertips twitching against my skin. He audibly exhaled and I could feel his hot breath against my hair. It was as if he contemplated what to do next as my nearness clearly affected him. That realization gave me enough confidence to take things a little further.
Shifting my position, I turned my body to be able to face him, a smirk prominent on my face. I expected him to look at me just as shyly as before, but he didn’t. Instead, he was reciprocating my grin as if he had been waiting for me to finally put into action what I had in mind all evening. Only now he was the one getting impatient.
Before I realized what was happening, his hands were cupping my face and pulled me closer until our lips met. I placed my hands on his chest to steady myself as I lost myself in our kiss. It felt soft but demanding at the same time, a week’s worth of longing for one another finally paying off. His mouth moved over mine as if he was starving for something only I could give him and it was exhilarating.
One of his hands dropped from my face to make contact with my waist instead, his fingertips gripping my shirt as if they held back from ripping through the fabric. I moved my palm to the nape of his neck, my fingers intertwining with his curls before pulling gently until I got a reaction. Spencer gasped against my lips and it made me thirsty to learn more about each and every one of his responses to my touch.
The movie playing in the background was long forgotten when I climbed into his lap, straddling him to feel him as close as possible. His body welcomed me as if I was his queen taking a seat on her throne. Both of his hands found their home on my back to hinder me from moving away while it felt like we would melt into one another.
Spencer was the one who deepened the kiss, his tongue brushing over mine until the need for oxygen became overwhelming. His mouth was still adamant to explore more of me as it wandered over my jaw and down my neck while I gasped for air. When he found my pulse point, he started sucking on the sensitive skin until he elicited a moan from my throat, making him hum in delight.
I was starting to feel lightheaded at the heat rushing through my body, the burning sensation between my legs almost becoming unbearable. I needed to feel him even closer, so I shifted my position in his lap until there was no distance to be found between our bodies. When I felt the extent of his desire pressing against my thigh, a gasp fell from my lips. He seemed irritated at my reaction and pulled back, apparently misinterpreting my excitement for shock.
“I, uhm, I’m sorry. Just… ignore that,” he muttered.
But how could I ever do that? My mouth found his ear, my lips grazing over his skin before whispering, “What if I don’t want to ignore it?”
Before he could respond, I rolled my hips against his, grinding my core against where he was straining hard against the fabric of his pants. He instantly threw his head back and groaned, “Fuck!” at my movements.
My lips wandered along his neck, kissing and biting his skin while rocking against him. I felt his throat vibrating as moans fell from his lips, clearly enjoying what I was doing. It wasn’t until I felt his hands harshly grabbing my hips to move with me that I realized how close I had brought myself to my own breaking point.
I found his ear once more, gently biting his earlobe before breathing, “You feel so good, Spencer. I can’t wait to have you inside me.”
His cheeks had taken on a crimson red shade now and he looked at me with dilated pupils and a hunger in his eyes. He found my lips in a hasty kiss as I ground against him and realized that I was seeking my own pleasure more than trying to tease him. My ministrations seemed to turn him on regardless.
A familiar tension was building in my loins and begged to be released. My mind was clouded but I still hesitated to allow myself to fall over the edge before he had even touched me where I wanted to feel him the most. As my thighs started quivering, I knew that Spencer must have noticed my current state.
He broke our kiss to look at me instead. We locked eyes and I felt like I might lose my mind at the way he stared at me. He looked at me like I was a goddess worth worshipping, his eyes wide and filled with wonder. As if what was happening was some epiphany he needed to witness, he didn’t dare avert his sight from my face.
I slowed down my movements before it got too much.
“Spencer, I’m…”
His grip on me tightened, almost bruising my skin underneath my clothes and he started bucking his hips upwards to meet my motion.
“Please don’t stop,” he pleaded, “You look so pretty like this.”
It was then that I knew that I would never be able to refuse Spencer anything he begged for. My lips found his once more but our kiss was interrupted by the sighs and moans escaping me. I ground my core against his length almost erratically, the fabric of my panties soaked by now.
When Spencer answered the sounds of my pleasure with his own groans, I came undone right in his lap. Burying my face into the crook of his neck, I panted against his skin as I trembled on top of him. His hands wandered over my back in soothing patterns, helping me find my way back to reality. He placed a gentle kiss on the side of my face and whispered, “You’re amazing,” into my hair.
Before I could get embarrassed about what had just happened, I felt his hardness twitch against my core while he groaned, “God, I want you so bad.”
Leaning back, I smirked at him and snickered, “Then take me.”
It took him a second to understand the meaning of my words but once he did, he motioned for me to get off his lap and show him my bedroom. I expected him to be more hurried after what just went down between us, but he took his time to peel me out of every layer of my clothes. It was as if he wanted to imprint the sight of each patch of revealed skin into his mind, taking in the sight of me until I stood bare in front of him.
His fingertips ghosted over my skin, making me break out in chills wherever he dared to touch me. Leaning into a gentle kiss, he mumbled against my lips, “You’re incredibly beautiful.”
My fingers found the buttons of his shirt, undoing them in the same unhurried way he had undressed me. He moved with me, helping me rid him of his clothes and giving me time to admire him. I was curious to explore every patch of skin that was revealed and kissed along his chest, shoulders and arms as I pushed the fabric of his shirt aside.
Whenever we locked eyes, he softly smiled at me, clearly enjoying the attention I was giving to him. When his shirt joined the pile of my clothes on the floor, my hands started unbuckling his belt before making quick work of the buttons of his pants.
"Getting impatient now?" Spencer chuckled.
And the truth was that I was getting impatient, so I just nodded and giggled as I pushed his pants down. His lips were on mine once the both of us were nude, ungracefully falling onto the mattress together to continue what we started on the couch. Curious hands wandered over exposed body parts, caressing one another while our lips and tongues moved in perfect synchronicity.
When his palm glided down my stomach, I parted my legs to make room for him. He didn't waste any time letting his fingers glide through slick folds, exploring me until he was certain where his touch was needed the most. Carefully he dipped one of his digits into my waiting heat, working it against my tightness until my sighs and whimpers interrupted our kiss.
He added a second finger and I could only guess what it would feel like to be filled with all he had to offer. One of my hands found his erection, eager to make him feel good as well. His skin felt hot and velvety against my fingertips and when I let my thumb glide over his leaking tip Spencer groaned and threw his head back. Wrapping my fingers around him, I moved my hand slowly up and down until his whole body started quivering.
"If you want to… there are condoms in my nightstand," I whispered.
When he grasped what I was suggesting, his hand left my core and he reached for the drawer beside my bed. With the small foil in his hand, he kneeled between my legs and let his eyes roam over my body. The sight of him like that was almost too much for me to handle and I knew that I would certainly lose my mind if I wouldn't feel him soon.
"Please, Spencer. I need you."
I thought that he might tease me for being impatient again, but he didn't. He suddenly seemed just as needy as I was, quickly putting on the condom before leaning over me. I reached between our bodies to guide him to my entrance, tilting my hips to help him glide into me. Spencer groaned at the sensation of stretching me open and I joined him with my own sounds of pleasure.
With a scrunched up face and eyes filled with lust he breathed, "Fuck, you feel so good!"
With a steady rhythm he started to push into me while his lips refused to leave mine, only separating for split seconds to gasp for air. My arms around his neck brought him closer to me, making it impossible for me to tell apart where my body ended and his began. Our bodies merged and were keen on guiding one another into the sensation of pure bliss.
I really tried to prolong this feeling of being one with him but with everything that had happened before this moment, it was impossible not to lose myself way too quickly. I could tell that he felt the same way, relief clearly visible in his look when he noticed that I was just as close as he was. When I started to pulsate around him, I felt him twitching inside me as well.
With a few erratic thrusts he helped the both of us to ride out our highs before collapsing into my arms. After evening out his breathing, he disappeared in the bathroom for a moment before joining me in bed once more. There was no need to speak words, we just enjoyed each other's nearness with entangled limbs and lips still hungry for more kisses.
When Spencer started to drift off to sleep, I needed to get up to get a glass of water. I noticed that we never turned off the TV and smiled to myself when I reached for the remote. Maybe next time we would make it to the end of the movie but I sure wouldn't mind if we didn't.

Studying Language
Sorry I've been rather inactive, I'm slowly trying to get back into the swing of things!
This is something I’m actually qualified to talk about! I speak three languages fluently, albeit in need of a little practise, and I’m learning one more currently, with one on pause due to time constraints. Nevertheless, I feel pretty confident in my information lol. I’m also a qualified TEFL teacher and have worked abroad teaching English!
Full immersion is the best option. The best thing you can do is spend your time in a country that speaks your target language and force yourself to learn, once you have the “Hello,” “Goodbye,” “Where is the bathroom?” all mastered. In Ireland, there are places called Gaeltachtanna where you go for different lengths of time depending on the course and live in a town speaking exclusively Irish, usually staying with an Irish-speaking family, and going to classes for the language and for games and dances. Of course, that’s not an accesible option for everyone, so you could try going to places like your nearest Asian market, Eastern European market etc, and any areas in your city with a lot of immigrants that might speak your target language. If you have friends who speak that language, natively or just to a better level than you, ask to meet them for coffee and chat as much as you can in your language.
Immersion Part Two: Culture. The people who speak your target language natively do so not just becaus that’s the place in which they exist, but because that’s the place that they live- they get their groceries there, they go to school there, and their language developed because of the day-to-day, as well as unique aspects of their culture such as dances, music, and especially food. Learn about the culture of the country or countries that speak your target language. Eg, fold a paper crane or eat sushi if your language of choice is Japanese, watch an telenovela or go to a salsa class if your goal is to learn Spanish.
Watch TV shows in your Target Language. If you can’t access the locations, and even if you can, watching TV or movies is great because it’ll help you understand the cadences of natural speech that you can’t get from a textbook or formal class situation. Start with movies you might be familiar with like Disney movies (I will die on the hill of “Mother knows Best” from Tangled is better in Spanish). You can also combine your subtitles and audio, using subtitles in your own language at first, and challenge yourself to changing the subtitle.
Similar to the above points, use YouTube or Twitch to your advantage too. That’s probably a lot easier if your target language is English, but there are creators that speak in their non-English native language too. My friend watches a Mexican Minecraft YouTuber called Quackity who has a Minecraft server modded to feature a live translator between Spanish and English, which is very cool.
Read books in your Target Language. We don’t love The Chronicles of the Boy Wizard in this house, but the books are available in 85 languages. The Hobbit also has a tonne including Cornish, Thai, and Ukranian, and Twilight has about 37 translations, just to list a few well-known examples. Learn especially about books written originally in your target language.
Consume Media Originally from the Country or Countries that Speak that Language. Read the Witcher, watch Física o Química, join the dubbed vs subbed anime bloodbath. It can be so beneficial to your understanding of a language to see how those who speak it write it themselves, not just for localisation purposes. It can especially be useful for slang and dialects.
Duolingo and other apps. I’m swiftly approaching my 365 day duolingo streak,* and I fully intend to celebrate with pierogis and a green cake. But there are other options out there, and all of them are great for beginners. I can only speak about Duolingo as its the one I use, but I’m having a lot of fun with the layout of it. However, I do need real practice if I’m going to become actually fluent.
That’s it! I hope this has been helpful!
*I've surpassed it since writing this!! I'm at 400+!!

Welcome to the 2024 Sailor Moon Rewatch!
Every week, we collectively watch four episodes of the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (1992) anime. Participants then discuss, celebrate, and create around those four episodes and tag their posts with #SailorMoonRewatch2024. By the end of 2024, we will have rewatched all 200 episodes!
What do I do?
You can engage as much or as little as you'd like. After watching (up to & including) the current week's episodes, you can reply to the discussion posts made on this blog, or make your own posts! Tagged posts have a chance of being reblogged here.
Did you take the perfect screencaps? Did you think a particular scene was funny, moving, intriguing, or fell flat? Has an episode changed or strengthened your perception of a character? Did something in the episode inspire you to draw, write, cook, edit, sew, sculpt, or otherwise make something? Did you realise you can perfectly closet-cosplay an outfit from one of the newest episodes? Have you themed your TV snacks around an upcoming plot? That's exactly the kind of stuff we want to see in the tag!
But, if you'd prefer, you're also welcome to simply sit back and scroll through the blog/tag, liking posts as you watch the series alongside everyone.
Where can I watch Sailor Moon?
Legally, you can purchase Viz's new official DVDs or Blu-rays, or you can stream the series on Hulu, Tubi, or Pluto TV.
Which version of Sailor Moon is this rewatch for?
This rewatch is about the first anime series, "Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon" (1992) aka "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon" (1992), not Sailor Moon Crystal (2014) - though if this rewatch is successful, there may be a group Crystal rewatch in the future!
Do I have to watch a specific dub?
Not at all! This sub uses the official Viz translations of episode titles, but you are free to watch in any release of any language dub. You can watch subtitled in Japanese, you can watch the old Dic/Cloverway dubs, or you can watch in any dubbed language you like.
If the rewatch covers an episode that was cut from the dub you're watching, you can elect to simply skip that episode or temporarily swap to a different dub/sub.
What if I get ahead of the rewatch?
That's fine! We just ask that you keep your tagged posts to the current episodes. Part of the goal of this event is to introduce new viewers to the series, and keeping to the schedule helps these first-time Moonies avoid spoilers. If you want to watch ahead, save up your notes/art/etc and then post them here when the relevant week comes 'round. That's what makes it a group event!
What if I'm late or get behind?
That's also fine! You can jump in any time and catch up on missed episodes at your leisure, or choose to simply start at whatever episode the rewatch is up to and fill in the gaps for yourself.
Similarly, you can choose to skip any episodes at any time for any reason. Episodes will be flagged with relevant content warnings in the week's introduction post.
The first four episodes will be covered over the first two weeks of 2024 in order to give people more time to join. After this, each single week will typically cover four episodes. You can see the full schedule here!

okay i am going feral over this. it's 2023 and no one was going to point out to me that the title doesn't translate to Revolutionary Girl Utena wtf
Tumblr media
like. i legitimately never noticed. idk how obvious it is if you're a native Japanese speaker, or if it's actually acceptable grammar to put the adjective after the noun and this is just an alternate way to say Revolutionary Girl, but... growing up with so many "Magical Girl X" shows, "Revolutionary Girl Utena" sounded so normal to me that I never looked at the Japanese.
and like, the French subtitle that they throw in there is la fillette révolutionnaire, which does translate to Revolutionary Girl
but, thinking about it, if it really is that, shouldn't it be "Kakumei Shoujo", not "Shoujo Kakumei"...??
so the reason this has me feral: if it's true, it's yet one more bait-and-switch they threw in there, right up front, and it was in plain sight all this time. caution: heavy spoilers for the plot of the show follow.
so like. it's my opinion that the OP, both song and video, of Utena are an extremely clever bait-and-switch. in that they make one kind of sense going into episode 1, and they make a completely different kind of sense once you've finished the show.
like. when you first watched Utena, and you saw the intro, wasn't it basically exactly what you thought the show was going to be like? two girls having a meet cute, there's duelling, fairy tale elements, Utena is badass, and oh no she's going to have to struggle to hold onto Anthy metaphorically because of the Rose Bride thing, which could tear them apart at any time!
it's delicious, it's dramatic, and it's... not what the show ends up being.
but then you watch episode 39 and you realise. the intro is a complete description of the entirety of the show. two girls meet, they have some cute romantic moments early on, there are duels. Utena fights everyone. the castle collapses. they storm the heavens, Utena on her princely white horse of innocence and ignorance, Anthy on her dark horse of... being the dark horse of the plot, lol. Utena cannot be the one to save Anthy, she both metaphorically and physically cannot lift her out of her burdens, and Utena is left alone, curled up on the ground beneath the self-imposed weight of her defeat.
meanwhile, the song. the song!! going into the show cold, "rinbu revolution" seems like a pretty standard song for someone like Utena. but it's not Utena's song at all. it's Anthy's.
Even if I dream, even if I cry, even if I get hurt... ...reality keeps on coming recklessly. I wanna find out where I am, the value of being me. Gonna take who I've been up till now and find the strength to throw it all away. Strip down to nothing at all. Become like a rose petal blowing free! Even if the two of us are ever torn apart l swear that I will change the world.
who, in the plot, finally accepts the reality of her situation? who starts out lacking self-worth and struggles to eventually carve out, with her own hands, the place where she belongs? who heroically finds the strength to throw it all away, stripping herself of her prior role?
not Utena, who up until the very last clings to her "princely" ideals, into which she has placed all her worth and sense of self. in the last episode it's made clear that she hasn't changed the world one bit, nor brought revolution, as the world quite literally forgets her and goes on without her exactly as it was.
except for Anthy. Anthy remembers Utena, the only one who does, even though they are torn apart. she frees herself, changes her own reality by escaping the cycle of abuse to which she had become conditioned. Utena undoubtedly gave her strength and inspiration, but she could not lift Anthy out of her suffering, and believing she could (and had to) was her downfall.
let go of me, Anthy says, as their hands part, to an Utena who firmly believes that she can only make a difference by playing the hero. i'll go my way. the revolution is hers, not Utena's.
which is why, if the title is purposely misleading, it's so damn brilliant. we start out thinking, "of course! Utena is a revolutionary girl! She wears the boy's uniform* and duels, and she'll surely bring the revolution and save Anthy!" but what occurs is simply a "girl revolution", a Shoujo Kakumei, that is completed by Anthy herself.
*(no she doesn't, it's actually a unique uniform design. neither this nor that but a third thing.)
but maybe we can go deeper.
we know that Utena means calyx, while Anthy means flower. a calyx is the tough, protective outer layer of a flower bud, matching Utena's role in relation to Anthy. once a flower blooms fully, the calyx is no longer needed to protect it, and retracts or withers. i'm not a native Japanese speaker, but from what I have studied, it would seem that "Shoujo Kakumei Utena" could be read as "girl-revolution protector". not the one who brings the revolution, but the one who protects/shields the revolution-bringer, who nurtures Anthy while she is vulnerable. then Utena, the calyx, crumples, and Anthy blossoms in her own time.
and i think that's beautiful.

Why Kawi Felt Inentionally Ace Coded
This is the second post I am making about this show for this week, the first was about what I think went down around time travel in this ep and I will directly reference those theories.
Also I just think the way this episode was playing with flash forwards and backs (with both Piseang’s conversation with his mum AND Max’s convo with Kawi – ALSO A FLASHBACK FYI) is VERY INTENTIONAL. (for the purpose of keeping us both in and out of the loop)
Okay so, for the record I really didn’t plan to actively engage in BMF this week, I am mid spiral on an entirely different TV show and this show did not have my full focus while I watched it this morning.
HOWEVER
This moment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Kawi saying "Do you think it's possible for two people dating to have no sexual activity at all]
Took my attention and kept it, I was yelling and I made 2 quick reaction posts about the fact that I was yelling (1, 2)
I will add here that @dropthedemiurge posted about Kawi being definitely ace coded LAST WEEK (I couldn't find it sorry but I remember reading it) as well as this week 2 and @heretherebedork had two different posts about this this week.
Also there is legit evidence for this being about touch starvation and intimacy issues (@shouldiusemyname) and if they do this well I wont be mad but…
It Felt VERY ACE CODED To me
And it felt a bit smack in your face ace coded in a way that to me was throwing up giant WE ARE GOING THERE flags. These flags, to me, were primarily in the LANGUAGE that was used more than Kawi’s physical body langue (which was more ambiguous between the two theories), and this is even trickier because of the layers of translation involved.
So lets talk about those flags
(Also I’m demisexual and demiromantic so my own lens is definitely colouring my view)
Max’s convo with Kawi
I actually loved this convo FOR Max’s response, not because he responded well (if Kawi is ace) but because he DIDN’T respond well. This show is doing a really good job of allowing it’s characters to be flawed and I reckon both Max and Piseang got to be flawed in this episode.
Max has been our gay Yoda
Max has been on point with all his advice
Kawi and Piseang are together in part due to Max’s advice,
But do you know what else Max is?
A 20 YEAR OLD
Max isn’t the person Kawi needs to talk to in this moment, because Kawi’s experiences are no longer aligning with his, and all of his advice thus far has been based on HIS OWN EXPERIENCE (which he literally says by the way):
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Max speaking while the subtitles translate the start of his sentence as "Personally,"]
Kawi’s language in this convo was REAL SUS
On top of the first line pictured above, their conversation includes
Max: You’ve already crossed the line, what are you afraid of?
Kawi responds
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Kawi saying "I'm not afraid. I just don't think it's that significant."]
Then we get Maxs scoff (SCOFF!!): "Right, The word from someone who’s never had sex"
And his positive take on how important sex is for a relationship and an Individual
And the implication that doing it with someone you love is even better
Then
Max: Are you going to sleep next to each other holding hands forever?
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Kawi saying "That's good." with an acesexual black, grey, white and purple flag added to the image]
@sparklyeyedhimbo I like the flag one so I borrowed it.
Then Max points out that it will only work out if Piseang feels the same way.
my thoughts:
Max is very dismissive of Kawi in this convo, there is a real disconnect with Kawi’s tentative questions and Max’s certain responses. Again I THINK THIS IS INTENTIONAL as per above. (For anyone who wants to check again its part 3/4 from around the 2 minute mark)
Kawi doesn’t seem afraid, he seems genuinely confused about not wanting sex. And personally, I’ve BEEN THERE.
Back in the bedroom
Now here we get some fear as Kawi finds condoms, panics and pretends to sleep.
Something I find interesting about this is he doesn’t pretend to sleep facing away from where Piseang would lie or curled up, he is still placed fairly centrally on the bed. His body language isn’t overly defensive (in my uninformed opinion). Now this could just be that he trusts Piseang regardless but I wanted to point it out.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Piseang standing at the foot of the bed look at Kawi apparently asleep in bed]
Then Piseang Time Travels (Full clown, I’m committed)
(I just watched the scene again and Kawi opens his eyes and we don’t see Piseang while the music plays, this scene is legit from Kawi’s point of view and we’ve already seen that the travel isn’t visible to the person not holding the magic globe so I AM EVEN MORE CERTAIN)
Anyway back to this post
Piseang goes to bed and looks at kawi like this
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Piseang staring at Kawi]
(I’m just putting this here and choosing to interpret it as weighted with future knowledge lol)
Which post is this again?
Ah yes Ace!Kawi
So we get bed in the morning and Kawi pretending to sleep and then Piseang goes
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Piseang rolls to lie on top of Kawi]
And Kawi informs him that he’s heavy.
There’s no recoil
There’s no fear
Until
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Piseang says "Would you like to get on top instead then?"]
Even then he’s startled more than scared in my humble opinion
Until Piseang tries to kiss him
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Kawi making a very surprised/scared face]
Then Kawi pushes him off and leaves
Piseang continues to try and encourage intimacy
HOLD ON I HAVE A SECOND CLOWN THEORY ABOUT THE FUTURE
(I’m less convinced about my projections for what happens in the future, Piseang looks so content, maybe he just get’s a glimpse of domestic bliss…It needs to be next week already. FOR THE RECORD I’m sticking with clown theory 1 if I have to choose).
We get this moment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Two images of Kawi as Piseang wipes something off the corner of his mouth and Kawi's expression goes from anger to something softer]
And Kawi’s change of experession here is so tender, I feel like this could be coded either way intimacy issues or strong romantic feelings, it’s not lust though that’s for sure. (I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be using coded for intamacy but *shrugs*)
(oooo I wonder if the language play came from his glimpse into the future)
I’m going to skip ahead to the theme park or this will go forever
The bits in between feel more ambiguous to me
THESE LINES FELT SUPER ACE CODED
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Piseang saying "If you just wanted to eat, why did you ask me to take you to a theme park? then Kawi saying "I just wanted to get the vibes. The thing that can make me the happiest is eating"]
Food over sex is a legit part of the ace community (the same way tucked in shirts and clear phone cases are part of the bi community from what I understand)
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Kawi still saying "The thing that can make me the happiest is eating" now holding up a corn cob]
(If Kawi had held up cake here I would be ALL IN)
Then we get the rollercoaster metaphor!
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Kawi and Piseang both looking at the rollercoarster, Piseang looks excited Kawi looks concerned/apprehensive/is making a woah face]
I’m just going to transcribe here it’s quicker and I’m running out of time before I go out tonight:
K: This is too much. Not this ride
P: Come on, Let’s try it first
K: No, I don’t like it.
P: You haven’t tried it yet. How do you know if you like It or not. You said you’d never been to a theme park.
P: If you don’t try it, it’s the same as if you’ve never been here
e.g. Coming to a theme park isn’t the same as enjoying the ride
Then P holds out his hand
P: If you’re scared, just hold onto my hand, Okay?
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Kawi looking at Piseang]
K looks at Piseangs hand, Looks at Piseang, Looks at the ride and says
K: No! I won’t get on it. You can go alone if you want to. I’ll just wait here
And walks off
Tumblr media
This again felt to me like a rejection of the fear as the primary motivation, he directly says he’s not afraid but he still doesn’t want to
I’m not sure about this scene in the car, it mostly just felt like Kawi was fed up at this point.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Kawi and Piseang in the car]
Possibly this scene highlights the different places there in and how Piseang is open to new experience and Kawi’s not? This feels more intimacy coded than ace.
Restaurant Scene
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Kawi and Piseang looking tired in the restaurant]
Both Kawi and Piseang look so worn out in this scene, they both spent the whole day not communicating their true wants and fears and it’s left them all worn down
But Piseang doesn’t give up
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Piseang saying "Whatever I did wrong today, you can tell me." and Kawi responding "Today was great."]
Kawi responds to this sincerity and reaches out to hold Piseang’s hand.
KAWI is the one WHO REACHES OUT, again this reads as specifically felt to me as a reason against touch starved.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Two images of Piseang and Kawi holding hands in the restaurant]
And then we’re in the bedroom (time skip anyone).
I’m actually not going to analyse this scene at all much. If Kawi is ace then he can still choose to have sex provided he and Piseang have communicated and if it’s intimacy issues then I also think it’s okay provided they’ve communicated first. ( idon't actually currently think Kawi is demi for the record)
(even when Piseang takes his shirt off, Kawi’s eyes stay on Piseangs face)
(although Piseangs do too actually…)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Two images of Kawi and Piseang after they have removed their shirts staring at each other. The first image contains the subtitle of Piseang saying "are you sure?"
(god his eyes are so big here compared to their often squintiness)
He doesn’t pull back but leans into the kiss. He’s clearly sure of his decision. I’m just not sure about his reasons.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Piseang and Kawi kissing]
Both Piseangs hands are on Kawi, but Kawi’s hands are straight down, I think this could go with either theory but personally on the few occasions I’ve made out with someone “what do I do with my hands?” loops in my head lol so I found this relatable.
Make of this what you will!!
Thoughts on Kawi and Kissing Piseang while he’s drunk
Honestly this doesn't feel weird to me, romantic attraction can involve kissing and drunk!kawi is just giving in to his confused thoughts and feelings, Aesthetic attraction can trick you too if you're not aware of your own identity (lol I had sex with someone before I experienced sexual attraction for the first time and felt very confused about why I didn't really feel like doing it again after even though it had been a positive experience, It was WILD), Kawi kisses Piseang because he likes him and is then confused about Why TF it doesn't feel like it's "supposed" to, *shrugs* make of that what you will.
Additional Thoughts
I’m reading into past future events now but I wonder about Pear and Kawi’s relationship.
Did they have sex?
There was clearly something fundamentally wrong with it, and the show talks about Kawi prioritising work, but it’s all a bit ambiguous and we never got any impression of intimacy. The fact that Pear is pregnant and Kawi doesn’t question if he’s the father, how long have they been broken up? Why did Pear seek out Not in the first place? Did Pear assume Kawi was gay because they didn't have sex??
ALSO
The scene where Kawi stares at Piseang while he was sleeping (Ep 9) I'm not going back to find it now or this won't get posted for like another 14 hours but it also felt ace-coded but I shrugged it off.
ALSO I HIT THE IMAGE LIMIT LOL
(@lurkingshan and @clairificusrex since you helped with my thoughts)

So I have seen this picture quite a few times today
Tumblr media
and it just rubbed me the wrong way. Because
/he would not fucking say that/ ™.
So, I specifically watched this hour-long interview to check what was going on xD And while the literal translation of a few phrases is correct, it doesn't really convey the meaning or Andrey's intentions.
A bit of context:
Andrey was talking about his work with a psychologist, about how personal problems might affect his mindset on court. Then, he was asked to compare the attitudes on court - his and Carlitos'.
Interviewer: Ok, so let me give you an example. I'm not comparing you two, you're different people, but still. Alcaraz. The dude just always smiles throughout the whole match, I mean he really fights, and his energy is, you know, just so positive, his relationship with his team and all that… Then I turn on your match, Rublev walks on court, and I can literally see this weight on you, this load of responsibility. And I just don't get it. Perhaps taking tennis lightly is wrong, in the long term, you just won't make it this way, but if we talk about the 'here and now', it's, well, such a disheartening sight…
Andrey: Well… Carlitos is still young, and for now outside the court everything is planned for him, everything is getting done. And he managed - because he is an unbelievably good player - he managed everything, to break through perfectly, he's already been #1, he won Slams. Obviously, he has essentially accomplished what tennis players want - winning Slams, becoming the number one - he's already done that. Of course, he now has to more, like… do more and more and more, to remain at the top, to win more Slams. And off the court, for now, everything is very carefully planned and organized for him, so I'd be quite curious to see, when he faces some… life situations, how he is going to handle them. Because it still requires time and it requires experience to figure things out somehow, and to understand these things. Doesn't matter what, even. Even hypothetically, a simple example - the agency, some problems with your agent. Like when you, for example, when you part ways, all these contracts and whatnot, where everything goes, who gets what, because they'll try to squeeze as much as they can out of you. And, at the very least, moments like these have an impact on you, you begin to think a bit beyond just tennis.
Link to the interview with the timestamp
*the subtitles are decent, but not perfect (the translators just threw out phrases like 'for now', 'still' etc, which is kinda important to the whole vibe)
p.s. meanwhile, 'the dude who just always smiles throughout the whole match' :D

My Universe Round-Up
This was a series of 2-part short stories, essentially each the length of a movie but they're more episodic which makes it an interesting format to get a wide variety of actors, directors, stories, and tones. And all of these vary widely. Most of the actors are very green, which means the performance quality falls all along the spectrum, but overall emotions often fall flat. There are a handful of different directors too (each directs a few of the stories), so these really feel different. The only two things that don't vary are the production quality (middling; sometimes some decent camera shots, but few sets and extras, sound is sometimes shirt-muffled or otherwise messed, the usual hilarity of royalty-free music choices) and awkward subtitles.
The subtitles deserve their own paragraph because I think they're potentially the worst kind, in that they look fine but then every once in awhile the translation is the opposite of what it should be. Having a bit of Thai knowledge and experience with Thai pulps really helps navigate these.
The other thing to say about the structure of this series is that there is a neat thing where each story sets up the next with either a character appearing in the next one or having been mentioned in the previous one. So they're all in the same universe but are otherwise unrelated. Sometimes you can guess whose story you'll get next (like a side character), sometimes it's a real stretch (like the waiter at the noodle place the characters ate at once).
As a really brief summary of what these are actually like in terms of narrative, they took as many tropes as they could think of and then treated them seriously. It could have been interesting, if they had something to say, but I'm really not sure they did. There are a lot of difficult circumstances covered, sometimes with hope, sometimes with nihilism, and it often feels like the story is about the characters around those who are dealing with difficult circumstances rather than those who are experiencing it themselves. Honestly this felt like a film school project about trying out difficult tropes, rather than folks with something to say about a specific topic.
Tropes [note, almost all of these are a dark/sad version of these tropes and end sadly or open]: bodyswap, mistaken identity, in-love-with-your-sibling's-friend, destined lovers, enemies-to-lovers, love triangle, coach/athlete, fake-date-turns-real, twincest, age gap, paid companionship, terminal illness.
Warnings for this series overall: murder, attempted sexual assault (in multiple miniseries), incest (only very lightly speculated about), ambiguous relationship with a minor, cheating, intimate personal violence, death of parents, death of a partner
If you're going to try any of them, I'd recommend episodes 5-6, which were the story Right Time, Right You as a starting point--it has some of the better acting, an open ending, but still some of the dark themes (treated not as dark as some of the other segments) so it's a good litmus for if you should try any of the other parts out.
The one I most enjoyed watching was episodes 7-8 You Are My So(ul) Mate which unsurprisingly had actors who have acted before, and was one of the rare happy endings. The last one, I Wish You Love episodes 23-24 was maybe the best done overall (least annoying flashbacks for sure, decent pacing in the romance, comparatively decent acting) but warnings for the ending.
Details of each 2-part miniseries with rating and specific warnings beneath the cut for anyone still curious about any of these stories! My goal here is to give you enough info to watch whichever ones might interest you so I do spoil twists below when I think it's important to help people decide whether to watch. Feel free to ask questions if you're still not sure or have specific things you want to avoid.
Ep 1-2: Casanova Begins
4/10: Not recommended unless you like bodyswap
This plot was doomed to never fly with me; a dead lover tries to seduce the man he left behind in the body of the man he thought his lover was going to cheat on him with. I love supernatural stuff but bodyswap is a hard hill to climb and 2 episodes just isn't enough time to do it well. That being said, the actors did surprisingly well in the scene where all is revealed and they're saying goodbye. There's a stinger, and it did NOT work for me--people are not interchangeable.
Ep 3-4: Marry Go Round
6/10: Decent pulp with a good underlying message, but you have to not mind slapstick
I like the way one side character from the previous series brings us into the next, it's a neat way to tie these otherwise unrelated stories together. For a slapstick comedy of errors, this worked surprisingly well. The misunderstandings are well set up and make sense, characters have motivation for continuing the shenanigans and the continual additional complications build to absurdity but it all holds together in a very slapstick comedy way. Mei being willing to marry her friend's boyfriend to help keep their secret is top tier allyship. I wish the fujoshi had been chewed out more; she was invested in exposing them as a couple for her own curiosity/excitement and that's gross, and I don't like that she got any credit for their happiness. The mom being a secret fujoshi herself [and, it's implied, very ok with their relationship as a result] was a little on the nose lol The performances in this one were a little weak on the comedy; slapstick like this isn't easy to do well and the comedy suffers from this not being these actors' strengths. All that being said, the underlying message that marriage equality is the right thing and having to stay in the closet causes so much strife for everyone is one I can get behind.
Ep 5-6: Right Time, Right You
7/10: Decent plot, acting, themes. A bit rushed, but good pulp. Warnings for references to intimate partner violence. Ambiguous ending.
I enjoyed this one; I love the in-love-with-your-sibling's-friend trope, I love smiling-to-hide-pain, and I love pining. I love the complicated feelings around not being ready to let go of the love you have for someone even if they hurt you. I love wanting to do something for your friend because you see them hurting, and not knowing what will help. I love your sibling and best friend always being able to read you and ferret out your secrets. The framing in this one was interesting, there were a lot of on the nose imagery with the fence, the rope, the cigarettes. I really liked the dynamic between these characters, Mhok really felt like a younger sibling; a little willful, pouting when he is ignored, or not taken seriously, stealing his sister's breakfast, tagging along. And the ending was sweet. It's clear that Phat feels something, though he's been explicit that he's not ready to open up to anyone. And we basically end with very tenuous possibility. Not for anyone who is not ok with ambiguous endings.
Ep 7-8: You Are My So(ul) Mate
6/10: Fun trope-y pulp. Again you have to be ok with slapstick comedy, and I docked this one for internal inconsistencies but the chemistry was on point.
Ahhh one of my favourite romance tropes, dreaming of your destined person before you meet, and then experiencing the dream in reality! I appreciated that Butr's mom really did have a gift, and that he didn't believe and wrestled with the ethics of that. I also really liked that they tried to engineer a coincidence and had one anyway; I'm a sucker for magic/fate is what you make it. The actor playing Butr looks like a Footloose-era Kevin Bacon when he smiles while ducking his head, and the other lead is from My Cuisine, so I was pre-disposed to find them extremely cute. I do love shy4shy. That being said, a lot of the melodrama was around coincidence, and it was clear the overeager senior was just scouring campus for the guy, so there was a double-standard with the "coincidence" that would work (at least in the eyes of the protagonist) so a lot of it doesn't really hold together if you think about it very hard.
Episode 9-10: Lucky Love
5/10: rough especially with the language gap, but the leads have an interesting dynamic
Content warning for an attempted asault in this one. Annoyed-strangers-to-lovers where one guy has just broken up and is drunk and belligerent about it, and the other is not taking his shit. I really like Jeng as this taciturn dude who shows caring through food. The ex is still around, Meen is still clearly not over him, and goes through the stages of learning to prioritize his own feelings and truly let Noll go. Jeng talks mostly in innuendo, which paired with the bad subs (bad enough that sometimes they say the opposite of what's meant) means that a lot of this one is lost in translation. Because of the short runtime and the amount of time Meen spends getting over his ex, they can't get far, but the show gives the sense that they'll just keep on as they've been going. All that being said, Meen wears dangly earrings and has a femme best friend who is fantastic, and I am a simple person who enjoys her simple pleasures, so I actually didn't mind watching this one.
11-12: The Camp Fire
4/10: really disliked the twists in this; the horror was ok. Warnings for blood, ghosts, references to drowning, on-screen death.
Content warning for blood, ghosts, death (more details follow). Horror BL starring Kaonah and Turbo. Two guys who have been chatting online agree to meet in person but it turns out they already know and dislike one another; now they're stuck toughing it out at the campsite rather than let the other chase them home. Turns out this is a classic BL love triangle wherein one of the boys thought they were competing for the same girl, but his "rival" loved him the whole time (this is not the twist, it's fairly obvious). And that was my first frustration; Talay was unwilling to admit any kind of feelings for Camp even though Camp tries to reach out, even though he's clearly been in love the whole time and now has the excuse of their anonymous conversation and meeting. But then we get into the real spoilers, with the double-twist that honestly ruined this for me. First, it's revealed that June the girl who Camp loved is dead, and she died after being rejected by Talay (implying she killed herself) after Talay pretended to be into June so that she would not take up Camp's offer to be together. This made me really not want to root for this couple at all, Talay's character is awful at this point. Then Camp hears this story and decides to admit he likes Talay anyway, which felt extremely rushed if not absurd, and then June haunts them in earnest and snaps Camp's neck on screen. And then in a second twist, we find out we've been watching a film within a film the whole time, and Talay and Camp just met for the first time for filming this and have just started dating in real life. But we spend so little time with the "real" Talay and Camp that I wasn't invested in them at all as a pair.
13-14 Friends Forever
4/10 friendship in this is great but upsetting on the romance front, and the actual execution was rough and full of unnecessary flashbacks; content warning for coach/athlete, unnegotiated kink (slapping during intimacy), dubious consent (for the slap not the intimacy), murder (not shown on screen), and ghosts
So spoiler based on the content warning, this is a story about a coach who seduces one of his athletes and then murders him so that the athlete won't expose their relationship and get him fired. The sexy scene is consensual but the coach introduces pain without any context or consent, and it's just kind of shrugged off. The coach is creepy from jump so I enjoyed none of the couple's scenes. Beyond that, my issues with this were the massive use of flashbacks in a 2-episode short. They basically re-showed ep1 in ep2. The acting is ok, and the friendship (which is the actual story) between the guy who is murdered and his team is extremely cute, it was heartening how much this team supported their teammate dating the coach and how much they missed him and cherished his memory after his death. But this could have been one episode, or they needed something more to do.
15-16 Fake Love
4/10 flat acting and more flashbacks than actual new shots (half of ep 15 is a flashback of the other half of ep 15, and then we get it AGAIN in ep 16).
In this story a university student is trying to show up his pushy ex by blackmailing a campus 'prince' to pretend to date him. He finds out that his fake boyfriend used to have sex with his ex, and gets upset. They make out and then avoid one another. Fake boyfriend gets beat up and they reunite and admit they both lie to protect their reputations. There's an implication that Pol was being judged for being slutty and Peem was being judged for being poor, which I would have liked as a theme if they then hadn't undermined this by framing Pol as being "good now" at the end. Open but tentatively happy ending.
17-18 Pisces of You
3/10 WHY IS THIS SO DARK DANG. TW attempted sexual assault, blackmail, speculation about incest (really mild),
Ok so this is about twins being jealous and confused about their feelings; Mild is here and he sexually assaulted one of them (idk how young these actors are but this was hard to watch though he doesn't get far). I don't mind what they're doing around twins pulling apart, falling for other people and putting them first, being confused about their feelings, throwing away their future for an unrequited love (this is actually super realistic), regretting their decisions. But goddamn that was painful AF and these baby actors really struggled to actually deliver on these difficult and complex emotions.
19-20 1626
6/10 decent short story but barely a romance. Warnings for age gap.
Follows one of the twins' love interests from Pisces of You; we find out why he wasn't interested in the twin, it's because he has his own love interest in his former tutor 8 years older than him (16 and 24). For what could have been a really cringe story, this was handled relatively well. They were careful that these two characters barely touched, and made the feelings between them very ambiguous and confused. The ties between them were very confused too; they both had family trauma and had helped one another to the point where desire and debt seemed to be inextricably mixed up. I appreciated the choices made in this one. Again, not what I would consider a "romance" story per se. And again, the ending is ambiguous.
21-22 Refund Love
2/10 incomprehensible, terrible acting, terrible plot, zero chemistry, infidelity, manipulation, and weird unclear moralizing around a thinly veiled allusion to sex work
This one, I don't even know what to say. It's trying to be clever with the way it parcels out information, but it ends up being just frustrating and, in the end, nonsensical. I won't even try to avoid spoilers or fake impartiality here, because I really think nobody should watch this one. This is all about jealousy of your significant other taking a job as a "companion" for other people. There's lying, manipulation, and attempted fake relationships for jealousy purposes. I'm sad because this also has a side GL couple, but they made no sense. This couple claimed to have orchestrated their boyfriends deciding to spy on them together (how?) in order to....see if they cared enough to fight for them, after one had already broken up with her man and the other was going to? What in the world was the endgame?! MAKE IT MAKE SENSE. Anyway they really shoehorned in a relationship in this one with two guys--one of whom just broke up, the other who is thinking about whether or not to break up, and who spent only one day together, most of which under false pretenses--and I didn't buy a second of it.
23-24 I Wish You Love
5/10 big themes, decently handled to a point, but the story was about how helping the terminally ill character helped the abled character find purpose, and that sat wrong with me. Warnings for discussions of terminal illness and character death (not shown onscreen), as well as loss of parents.
This episode was set up as a ghost in the mirror story, but the supernatural element disappears pretty quickly and is actually just an excuse to bring together the two main characters (who knew each other before but one thought the other was dead) back together. This story is trying to deal with the very serious issue of chronic illness and what it's like being young and unable to do the things other people do, and the suicidal ideation that can come from being isolated and having a limited time left anyway, as well as the regrets about missed opportunities. It was also dealing with the sometimes awkward feeling of sorting out the love of friendship and the love of romance, and transitioning from P'-Nong to Faen, especially with the additional fear of loving someone when one of you has limited time. The supernatural element comes back at the end to grant one wish, and to give the character who is sick a chance to undo one regret. It's implied Marwin died, but we don't really see him process having completed their bucket list, instead we get Pond reflecting on what he'll do next and how this experience has given him meaning. This episode had fewer egregious flashbacks than the other episodes, and better acting (one of the main characters is actually one of the series directors, and the other is Winner aka Wai from My Dear Gangsta Oppa, as well as War of Y and Nitiman), but did also use an instrumental auld lang syne in the background of a dramatic scene that was distracting, and some awkward we-don't-have-budget-for-an-actual-ambulance-or-emergency-personnel moments. Overall it was one of the better offerings from this series but I wasn't thrilled with how it made the terminally ill character's death a teachable moment for the one left behind, even though that was honestly flagged as the point throughout the two episodes, so is maybe my hang-up and a little unfair. At least this series framed that it was about Pond the whole time (we start and end with him).

A few weeks ago Lisa Ambjorn confirmed that Edvin Ryding would NOT be the voice actor for Wilhelm in the English dub of Young Royals S3, owing to a scheduling conflict. Now, part of why I love the English dub is Edvin’s voice acting, just like I love the English voice acting of Omar, Nikita, Frida, Malte, etc. the idea of watching S3 dubbed, with someone else’s voice saying Edvin’s lines did not sit well with me.
So I’m going to watch it in Swedish with English closed captions. Apparently there are two different translations into English. The translation they used for the English subtitles, and the translation they used for the English closed captions. Just about every Swede on Tumblr has said the CC translation has fewer errors. Not zero errors, but fewer.
Anyway, I’m rewatching S1 and S2 now, to refresh my memory before March 11. And I’m watching those seasons in Swedish with the English CC, to get used to it ahead of time. I actually think the Swedish with subtitles is better than the dub. Even WiTH Edvin.

Super, super late reply, but I was tagged by @variabels to list 5 anime/manga recs. Thanks for the tag! (I also love Durarara and Baccano ヾ(•ω•`)o)
I’m gonna list mainly Chinese media in this list, though, because that’s what I consume more. And ha! How brave, asking an ND person like me for recs. Prepare to be bombarded by my rambling!
Starting off with the media currently featured in my header (excluding Blue Lock coz most of my mutuals already know that)...
1. The Earth is Online (danmei* novel)
Tumblr media
* Danmei - Chinese boys love stories
The plot basically: Everyone on Earth is pulled into a death game.
A good intro to the unlimited flow* genre. Each instance is thrilling and complex. The boys love aspect is not much, as it focuses on plot, but it’s definitely not subtle. The characters are also quite diverse. Most UF novels just focus on the Chinese characters and revolve around what happens in China, but this one actually features those from other countries. I also like how the protagonist isn’t treated as the entire world’s savior. Other people around the world are also doing their part.
Where to read: An official English release is coming out in 2024. Translations will be done by luckkoi, the fan translator. As such, they've taken down their translations online. There's an alternate translation by @leonsrightlations , but only a few chapters are out right now. There are several completed translations online, but they're all edited mtl (machine translation). If you don't mind that, you can go google it. I recommend the one by Rainbow Mushroom. Their translations require a password, though, and you can find that on their Discord server.
* unlimited flow - Chinese genre of web novels where the protagonist is pulled into different instances to complete challenges which, if failed, would result in punishment or even death. It’s basically the death game genre, but instead of just one game, there are multiple.
2. Legend of Hei movie + Legend of Luo Xiaohei series sequel (donghua*)
(I downloaded this video from YouTube years ago. I can no longer find it there, so I’m reuploading it here…)
* Donghua – Chinese anime
A story about the young cat demon Xiao Hei and his quest to find a new home after humans destroyed his old one. Cute cat + cool powers + awesome fighting scenes + clean and crisp animation.
You can watch this on Netflix, but it’s not available in all countries. There’s an English and Japanese dub available, but I strongly recommend watching it in the original Chinese. (I can send you the full movie with English subtitles if you want). The series, which takes place after the movie, can be watched on YouTube. S1 of the series is more slice of life, but s2 is action-packed.
3. Low Tide in Twilight (BL manhwa)
Tumblr media
That BL trope where the bottom has a mountainload of debt, while the top gives him a way out… except, not really, coz the male lead Taeju is partly the creditor, and he’s forcing Euihyun into a relationship with him in exchange for money.
Typical BL story with an initially toxic couple, but better. Complex characters, and a manhwa that relies more on the art to tell the story instead of the words. Also, Taeju gives off that same annoying but hot vibe as Kaiser. What more do you want?
4. Link Click (donghua)
youtube
The title (时光代理人) would be literally translated as “Time Agents.” I have no idea why the official English title is Link Click.
The plot basically: Two guys with time-related powers run a photography shop, where they accept orders from clients to dive back in time through a photo.
Funimation did this donghua so dirty by not promoting it more back when it aired in 2021. The English subs were also terrible.
Did you know that it used to rank #20 in MAL, surpassing MP 100 S2, Jujutsu Kaisen, and many other mainstream anime? Now, it’s ranked #41 on MAL, lower than before, but still pretty high for a donghua on MAL. That’s just how good it is.
Here’s a link to the blu-ray version with fansubs. Just pick the normal English track option and not English (CR).
Edit: OKAAAY, it turns out that link has the episode order all mesed up. Just ask me if you need an HD copy with good fansubs.
5. White Cat Legend 2020 (donghua)
youtube
Title (大理寺日志) would be literally translated as The Journal of Dali Court.
Another cat boy donghua! Can you tell I just love cats?
The plot: Chen Shi travels from the countryside to the big city to search for his missing brother and inadvertently ends up working at Dali court under the cat guy Li Bing.
Slice of Life + Comedy + Drama + Supernatural + Mystery + Action
Baiting you with a hot guy gif~
It's a historical show btw, so expect some references to real-life events.
The animation is also really smooth in this one! You can watch it on YouTube. Here's a link to episode 1.
Tumblr media
Season 2 is also out! I'm yet to watch it, though. I should really do some time...
----
Tagging some mutuals to check these out, and also to list 5 recs (no pressure)~
@potato-longsocks @echarie @takeunknownroadnow @gachagon @bachirasbodyguard @blonde-batgirl @oo-mi-ru-oo @www98vikitoo @whiteapplesandblackblood
I recommend creating your own post instead of adding your recs in a reblog. My post is already pretty long. Turn this into a long thread, and we'll be a menace on the dashboard haha

Sudden guest post under my music tag.
My friend @erlenwein recently introduced her students to the different styles of Chinese opera. She also showed a video of these styles to me with some commentaries and I asked her to translate them into English (these commentaries very much expanded in the process).
youtube
Fragments of 2024 Lunar New Year Gala from CCTV-1 (main TV channel in Mainland China)
Here are @erlenwein 's commentaries:
1:33 Beijing opera 京剧 presented by two laodan 老旦,the role of older women. The play they're presenting is called ”杨门女将“ ("The female generals of the Yang family"), one of many plots based on the fictionalized story of the military Yang family (Song dynasty period). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Generals_of_the_Yang_Family
2:36 Yuju 豫剧 (Henan opera), Kunqu 昆剧 (around Shanghai, one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera), presented by wenchou 文丑 (comical role, in this case literati). The name of the piece ( “话梨园” ) can be translated as "Talking about the Pear garden" (Pear garden being the metaphorical name for the opera world), but I couldn't find any specifics, and I frankly couldn't be arsed to read the subtitles, sorry. Fun fact: the white patch on their faces is called 'a piece of tofu'.
3:15 Chuanju 川剧 (Sichuan) presented by a huadan 花旦. The play is ”别洞观景“ ("Looking from a different side of the cave"? Seems like it). The main character singing is 白鳝仙 (Immortal White Eel?) who came to the world of mortals. Check out her use of pheasant feathers! Usually the most known thing about Sichuan opera is their technique of 变脸, changing the masks really fast, but they decided to showcase a different role here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ayy7wcfeHU - Face-changing performance.
3:57 Chaozhou (Teochew) opera 潮剧 (Chaoshan region, southern Fujian and eastern Guangdong), presented by xiaosheng 小生 (young man, usually a romantic character) and huadan 花旦 (young woman in a romance plot). The play is “苏六娘” ("Su Liuniang").
4:34 Pingju 评剧 (Hebei opera), presented by huadan 花旦. The play is “花为媒” (“Matchmaking flowers").
5:07 Yueju 越剧 (Shaoxing opera, from Zhejiang), presented by xiaosheng 小生 and huadan 花旦. Both performers are women — it's typical for Yue opera, since the art form switched to primarily female troupes in 1930s. The play presented is “梁山伯与祝英台” ("Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai"), a very popular story often referred to as "Chinese Romeo and Juliet". You might've seen it also being called "Butterfly Lovers".
6:31 This part is just called 武戏, "military opera". It starts with a wuchou 武丑, comical military role, then wusheng 武生 (military male role) and wudan 武旦 (military female role) come out to present their fighting, juggling, and acrobatic skills. The flags behind their backs show their status as generals/officers. I can't imagine the skill needed to do this all so seemingly effortlessly. *I've seen mentions that the flags 靠旗 represent an army under the command of the character wearing them, but I can't find any info on it again to back up my claims. If you know something about it, please let me know! The piece is titled “杨威奋勇” (I'm not quite sure how to translate it, but it seems to refer to the Yang family again).
8:32 And back to 京剧 with laosheng 老生 (older men, also known as bearded sheng 须生). The play is “龙凤呈祥” ("Dragon and phoenix bringing prosperity").

Sigh, or The Last Twilight Sign Magic
Okay, I was afraid of this.
I've started watching several shows week by week so I can take part in the conversation, but it leaves me so scrambled, I can't seem to write much about any of them. I also don't want to get in the habit of pausing them to jot down notes - I'd like to save that habit for re-watches.
So much for my participation. I'm going to have to consider going back to binge watching on future series, or maybe picking one series at a time to watch episode by episode and save and binge the rest.
For the record, I'm watching (in order of how much I'm enjoying them):
Last Twilight
The Sign
Cherry Magic
Bake Me Please
Twins
Last Twilight (5 episodes viewed)
This is the one that I absolutely love. I tear up just at the this lakorn is fiction and not intended to anything card at the beginning. I think their relationship is developing at a good pace.
I did succumb to the note-taking syndrome in episode 5. But here are my notes for 4 and 5:
I was uncomfortable as to how long the smooth hands thing went on. It felt a little dubcon. Although I think it happened after "Take my watch off" which is something I would have expected Day to be able to do himself.
Odd that I've seen "sweet dreams" (right sense) as the subtitle in someone's post where YouTube has "good night" (tone deaf). Is there another version somewhere?
I liked that whatever pun they did in Thai made it into the English subs as "bread-fast" and would be curious if anyone who knows Thai wants to elaborate.
Day's editorializing on Mohk's level of detail regarding the badminton match reminds me of the quest to write good image descriptions.
We see a Thai cigarette package as Mohk decides whether to smoke. I'm guessing they show gross medical images of diseases one can get from smoking.
Getting mixed messages from August early vs. (literally) late appearances.
Did Day have a conversation with someone about whether Day was attracted to Mohk? Or am I mixing it up with the conversation from Bake Me Please between Peach and his grandmother? I seem to remember such a conversation in Twins. Is this a trope? In any case, it's confusing.
I eagerly await episode 6. If I were to pick only one series at a time to watch episode by episode, this is the one.
The Sign (3 episodes viewed)
Damn, this is a strange series. Mix of police drama and horror. I like it, but not on the level that I love Last Twilight. But I'm intrigued and am trying to figure out the rules of the world they are building.
The CGI is good.
I have trouble reliably recognizing Yai. This is complicated by him referring in the first two episodes to his wife and in the third episode to his girlfriend and not sure if he's cheating or they switched translators.
I also have trouble recognizing Tharn, and have to look for the stye.
But grandma looked familiar and she turns out to have been Dean's grandmother in Until We Meet Again.
I have a sense of anticipation for episode 4.
Cherry Magic (1 episode viewed)
I saw the Japanese version. Same number of episodes.
The Thai episodes are twice as long as the Japanese ones. I wonder how that's going to work.
How does Karan not notice Achi's look of horror?
Achi's not supposed to send mixed signals, but he keeps touching Karan to read Karan's thoughts.
The delivery guy is blond again. I wonder if he's shorter again as well.
Fortunately, I'm not having the recognition issues that I'm having with The Sign, likely because I saw all the Kiss episodes with TayNew (plus one each with one or the other) and at least three previous series with Sing. But damn, Sing looks different in this one.
I have mild anticipation on this one.
Bake Me Please (3 episodes viewed)
I'm lukewarm on this one. Shin's hard to like, but the business about buying cakes for the orphanage kids is redeeming. So I'm giving it a chance. I do plan to watch episode 4 on Monday (I see it's available, and someone has already posted about it - I stopped reading at that point, thank you for the spoiler warning - but I need to get ready for bed.)
Twins (6 episodes viewed)
This is the one I'm least warmed to. How do they not know this isn't Zee. At least Mr. Seme Tan got shut down by Sam. They may eventually wind up together but I'm confident it would be on Sam's terms.
I love the opening theme music but the visuals are an assault to the eyes, so I just close them and listen.
I might just stop watching this one now and complete it when it's done.
And feeling like I'm not able to do a good job writing about any of these.
