I’ve never had my DnD character’s backstory come for me and at last night’s session it DID.

The party, spending the night in an abandoned farmhouse after a fight, in the dark with a thunderstorm outside.

My character, keeping watch by the light of the burning barn their sorcerer set ablaze during the fight.

Seeing three figures on horses. Realizing they were wearing knight’s armor like hers, thinking for a moment they were allies, then realizing she had seen them before. Literal ghosts from her past.

Hearing the hoofbeats. seeing the figures, closer with every flash of lightning.

Waking the party, panicked, not sure what to tell them, not sure what to do because they cannot fight these things.

Telling the party to go for the horses.

Standing in the dark in the pouring rain, watching the black for any sign.

Hearing the hoofbeats thunder closer.

Running to the party, riding away together.

Another party member, the paladin, rolling a natural 20 on perception to look for danger.

Sees nothing. Hears nothing.

My character finds a hoofprint in the mud, concludes that the undead horsemen rode ahead, it’s safe to go back to the farmhouse.

The rest of the party can see the hoofprint, but it’s just a hoofprint.

No one else heard or saw anything else.

Telling the party a jumbled story of undead and possession.

Trying to sleep, soaked and shaking and staring at the lone candle my character will not allow to be snuffed.

And the session ended.

#fortunately the sorcerer casted ‘detect evil and good’ and picked up faint traces of undead #he hasn’t told the rest of the party yet but i’m relieved because i REALLY was starting to think it was a hallucination #wow it was scary though #the dm just had the sound of a thunderstorm playing #and some really evocative horror narration #i was literally shaking #storytime #dnd #pawthorn irl #dragonlance: shadow of the dragon queen #oc #badge kallas

shout out to myself for buying edgar the frog at the con i went to even though i was incredibly nervous

#i was literally shaking #i could barely talk #i just walked up to vendor and looked at the crochet plushes that they had set up #took out the cash #picked up edgar #said “could i…?”#moved the bill closer to the vendor #they took it #asked if i needed a bag #i said “no #nodded #and then walked away #it was very nerve wracking for me #but edgar helped out a lot #he was very comforting #going to the con was part of my initiative to do things that i’m slightly uncomfortable with #but that in the long run will make me happy #such as going to cafes and ice cream shops and libraries on my own #this is the biggest thing that i’m going to do for a while #so i’m praising myself for it #i think it was a bit too much at this point in time #but i also know that it would have been way worse before i started doing these things #i did a great job with the skills that i currently have available to me #and i deserve some praise
