Okay I'm back with another Rosy rec. When I tell you this story literally captured me within the first paragraph and held me in a vice grip the entire time. I literally started the beginning and went "now this is how you start a story" and then couldn't put it down. This is a horror/slasher AU, but none of the major characters die! It's a love letter to a lot of horror films, so if you're in to that sort of thing, I'd totally recommend. Or if you're like me and don't really watch horror, I'd still recommend because it's that good. Also once again Will and Nico's dynamic is top tier in this fic, and I really love Will's POV.

This is Percabeth centric, with Solangelo as a side ship, but this story is so good. Granted, I'm only about 150k in, but the writing has captivated me, and the adventure our heroes go on is fascinating to me. Plus I just love the "other" versions of all the heroes. Will I ever be able to finish it? Maybe in 2 years, but hey! It's my go-to fall back on fic when I'm running out of things to read. (It's 1.2 million words!)

I just had to rec this story, as I am about to re-read it only a couple of weeks after finishing it the first time because it's just that good. This follows the rest of August after the end of BoO, and the way Will and Nico's relationship develops is just absolutely stunning. Also Nico and Will are autistic coded in this story and it just makes me beyond happy.

I love the way ghosttotheparty writes intimacy, just, warm, soft, fragile moments that have such a wonderful air to them. I'm not usually one for high school AU's, but I love their characterization of Will and Nico so much that I just had to try this story, and I'm so glad I did. There's a particular scene where Will helps Nico down from a panic attack, and it just made me want to cry it was so well done. Just a lovely story.

The way that both Will and Nico stumble around each other is so endearing in this story, and their kids are JUST the cutest!! I absolutely recommend this story.

Noodling on an "Oops! Back In Time!" story idea where the Straw Hats sail through a Grand Line anomaly or whatever and wake up as they were about thirteen years in the past.

Robin is seventeen, still on the run in West Blue. She'd wake up, run down the list of her nakama to decide who needs help first: Franky and Jimbe are grown men already, they're fine, they can handle themselves. The East Blue crew are all little kids. To the best of her knowledge the tragedies that shaped their lives haven't happened yet and won't for a while. They're safe for now.

Chopper is a baby reindeer, probably hasn't eaten his fruit yet. Brook is currently unreachable to her, without a ship or a crew, but Franky is right there in Water 7 with a fleet of battleships that he needs to get rid of before they can be used to frame Tom. Maybe she can assume he'll take care of it.

Sanji is still in Germa kingdom. He's not safe at all.

Robin, who only looks seventeen, pulls out her mad skills as a spy and top-tier pirate and member of the actual Revolutionary Army and hustles to North Blue in record time, snapping necks and serving cunt the whole way. She infiltrates the fuck out of Germa 66 and is on the palace flagship before you can say Security Clearance. Robin's not stupid enough to dangle the poneglyphs or the Ancient Weapons in front of Judge: that's a carrot he would never stop chasing. No, she claims to have details of Vegapunk and Caesar's work on artificial devil fruits, counting on spite to get her through. It does. Robin was at Punk Hazard and Dressrosa and Wano: she knows enough details to make it plausible, and she's a trained academic to boot. She can make it sound right, even if it's not her field, even if it's made-up nonsense that will hopefully have Judge chasing his own tail for years.

Meanwhile, every night she's sending eyes and ears all over the palace looking for the missing third prince. Officially, the kingdom is still in mourning for the double tragedy of losing their Queen and one of the princes in quick succession. Robin cannot find any trace of grief in Judge or his remaining children, even when she's invited to dine with the royal family (there are still two empty chairs at the table, and she's ushered into one of them as though it was nothing. Luckily, she's had decades of keeping calm in the face of casual brutality to perfectly hone her poker face).

It doesn't take her long to find the stairs going down, down into the dark. And there's a dungeon at the bottom, a barred cell containing an eight-year old child who looks so much smaller than his brothers. He's covered in bruises and there's a metal horror wrapped around his head and casual brutality be damned, there are two wolves inside Robin right now and one of them wants to sit down and weep and the other one wants to snap Judge's neck and then tear this castle down brick by brick. Except. Tiny Sanji is doing a one-handed handstand in the middle of his cell. It's a bit wobbly, and he tumbles off-balance when he sees her, but there's nothing wobbly about the smile on the little she can see of his face when he runs to her.

"Robin-chwan!" he chirps, hugging her through the bars. "I knew I couldn't be the only one who came back! I'm so lucky to be rescued by such a dashing lady!" He peers at her through the helmet, eyes huge and blue and earnest. "You got here so fast! Who else is with you? Are you OK?"

And it's just so Sanji, who knows as well as she does where the rest of the crew is-better, probably-to think that she'd go to anyone else before coming here. As though his problems could wait while everyone else is taken care of first.

"Now that I've found you I'm quite alright, Sanji. The crew is just you and me for now, but I'm sure we'll soon change that."

He does a little spin of delight at having her all to himself, and it's the simple glee of a small child spending time with a favourite person. Robin smiles, and retrieves the keys, and holds his tiny hand all of the way out of the castle as he chatters about how amazing she is and who they'll go to find next. They sail away, leaving the palace in flames behind them.

So, I guess this is as good a time as any to come out as a fake First stan because I haven’t actually watched his full filmography 🙈—mostly because I have a super low tolerance for het stuff. But I am always happy to chat about First, so here are my power rankings for the couples I have seen.

Khaotung

What can I say? I’m obsessed with these two. Although I think their physical chemistry could still use some work, no one is going to top them in emotional scenes. You don’t get the “You can be weak—at least with me” scene in The Eclipse if it’s not First and Khaotung. You don’t get that raw emotional connection. There are only three branded pairs working right now that I truly believe make each other better actors and FK is one of them. 

Mix

5 minutes. That’s how long we got to see these two happy and in love. 5 fucking minutes. I kind of alluded to this above, but one of the things I think FK are still learning is how to make their intimate scenes more realistic. Their touches are very…polite. Mix is not polite. He plays sultry really well and is a natural flirt. The fact that First and Mix were able to sell this relationship (and make us root for it) with only five minutes of screen time is truly impressive. I’m looking forward to seeing them work together again in Only Friends.

Gawin

I need slutty First back, you guys. I miss him so much. Him and Gawin both have a very wide range and I would love to see them work together again. A lot of Dan and Yok's interactions are awkward, but they’re supposed to be. For two young actors who had never worked together before, I think First and Gawin did a fantastic job. I mean, they had me shipping my fave with a cop, so they must have done something right.

Ohm

Listen, I will be a The Shipper apologist until the day I die and the PanKhet romance is simply top tier. I’m still amazed at what First was able to do here as a relatively young actor playing two different characters sharing one body and somehow still managing to keep his chemistry with each of the pairs consistent throughout (i.e. First as Kim’s chemistry with Ohm is different than First as Pan’s chemistry with Ohm.) I do have to deduct points, however, for the fact that all of this delicious romantic chemistry was taking place between brothers, but hey. You can’t win them all.

Fluke

Fluke should not be so low on this list and I think if him and First were to work together now it would be an entirely different story, but what makes his chemistry with First a bit more difficult to judge is that for most of their intimate scenes, First and Prigkhing are splitting the lines between them (since they are, you know, sharing a body and all). It’d be interesting to see them work together now, though. I think they would kill it.

Up

LISTEN. Go watch this commercial if you haven’t already. It’s fantastic. And honestly, if I had more material to judge them on, these two might jump all the way up to 4th. You wonder if they even remember filming this? They should make it into an actual BL.

That's everything I've seen, but feel free to let me know in the comments if I need to watch more of First's het stuff. I'll suffer through it for him. Maybe.

And, as a bonus, I would sell a kidney to see him in a BL with Tay Tawan. I know it'll never happen, but a girl can dream.

Mr. Badguy I have a question as a guilty gear lore baby. I have been told sol/ky is problematic and I do not know why I fear. Could you please explain

Oh boy. I'm probably not the best person to ask about what ships are and aren't problematic because I honestly... just don't have the energy to care about it that much, it's like infinitely easier to block/blacklist and then move on. I don't know how people have the free time to get as worked up about it as they do.

Anyway. So, Ky's age before Missing Link (the earliest in the timeline of the games' stories) is generally the biggest problem. He was 20 in ML and a teenager through the Crusades. I think he was probably at least 18 near the end of the Crusades right before Sol left but that's pushing it. Anything with Ky and Order Sol's bad weird. I won't argue that at all, Ky was a kid and Sol was very much an adult, on top of the physical and mental power imbalance between them. Not good. Luckily, I really only see HOS/Ky stuff from the really early fandom (<2006) and IIRC their ages were still pretty vague back then so I'm just gonna chalk it up to no one knowing, especially in the EN fandom where it was a lot harder to find/get official information.

Between Missing Link to like late GGX/early GGXX I don't see what the problem with shipping them then is; they were both adults at that point and there wasn't even the power dynamic between them that there was during their Holy Order days. This, I think, really just comes down to personal reasons for not liking it. Which is fair.

After GGXX it gets... complicated.... Ky marries Sol's daughter but it's vague on when exactly Sol pieced it together that he even had a kid and that it was Dizzy, of all people. Ky definitely did not know she was Sol's kid until at least like partway through Xrd, when they both kind of put the pieces together and had a crisis over it. So shipping them after this point, between the timelines of Overture through Strive, you've got the issue of Sol now being Ky's father-in-law.

But the canon never straight up says Dizzy is Sol's kid (it is VERY HEAVILY implied though) and Sol and Ky both end up being dads together for Sin...?? It's like ASW is playing gay chicken with whether or not Sol and Ky are still shippable from an ethical standpoint lol Whatever that saying is about having a cake and eating it too, etc.

I saw the email for this ask this morning and I presented the Sol/Ky situation to my mom as if they were real people (she doesn't know anything about GG) and she was like, "That's a hell of a love triangle but I guess if the guy (Ky) and the daughter (Dizzy) got divorced and the daughter is alright with it, and it's consensual between the men, then it's weird but it's not as bad as some other relationships I've seen."

That's kind of how I feel about it too...? It's messy as fuck lmfao But I guess if there's a way to like write it so that Dizzy doesn't end up needing lifetime therapy then like... go for it....? I guess....???

I don't ship Sol/Ky because I think their dynamic is WAAAYYYY more interesting keeping them as rivals-turned-friends, and I like Dizzy too much; there's too big a chance of her ending up getting completely devastated by it. But as far as "problematic" Guilty Gear ships go, Sol/Ky's in the like... "People are wasting time arguing about this?" tier, imo. It being Thee biggest GG ship throughout the series' entire history is something to be considered, too. It's unavoidable, even the official art contributes sometimes. I often wonder why they decided to make it weird by throwing Dizzy into the mix because I know that, from digging through old forum archives, that change made a lot of people furious hahah

song joon ki seems to have an attachment to bromances. han seo had the best character arc of the ENTIRE kdrama universe fight me. that court scene where vincenzo pats han seo's cheek was max bro cuteness. still not over his death. he deserved better.

#5 - vincenzo : vincenzo cassano and jang han seo

even though i didn't very much like the show's first couple, bromance delivered well. hospital scene peaked, complete true beauty sameness. it was pretty hard to understand who was the superior officer in this tbh initially, since their comraderie was so cool, shi jin was kid to soldier in a split second. loved how they chose not to unnecessarily exaggerate the love triangle initially bec i was only rooting for the second couple.

#4 - descendants of the sun : yoo shi jin and seo dae young

business proposal was the first kdrama i saw. i finished it in a three day trip, and i remember thinking more about the bromance than the romance. i was NOT used to the clumsiness of kdramas in general, like wattpad fics incarnated. the bromance delivered well, made me root for the second couple, and was the only initial indicator of kang tae moo being human instead of archaeopteryx. that word was a nightmare to spell.

#3 - business proposal : kang tae moo and cha sung hoon

the most wolfstar bromance if I ever saw one. and NO, i do not ship wolfstar just like i do not ship these two. they are totally adorable, and specially since their personalities seemed to switch from when they were children. yeong turned all serious face and lee gon got fun. love their years of friendship sm, their wordless communication and yeong in general. the acting was amazing.

told ya, if u follow me u already knew what the first one was gonna be. being the simp i am for the goblin and grim reaper, these two achieved the max points for their bromance. that slow dynamic of goblin calling reaper's hat tacky to fighting with knives to that iconic 'saranghae' to 'HOW DARE YOU' to goblin boiling eggs with his powers while reaper chills the beer. they know each other so well. love love love them and you should too 🔪

in my heart, the trio of our boys beats nothing (except for the gookdu-minhyuk relationship of the crown prince and uk). but instead of choosing the frenemy thing, i decided to love yul and uk more. yul was such a quiet character, with incredible potential in him for me to hate him, but then...(the guy is literally too sweet and beautiful and nice i can ramble for days). and uk, man, our power baby who loves every version of our beautiful but slow girl, needed so much emotional support. uk and yul were not afraid to show their affection for each other, a trait i admired in all the three boys (jang uk, seo yul and park dang gu).

I’m sorry but there’s something I might be missing: why do all these anons who swear Jimin and Jungkook aren’t a couple there’s no way they are they’re just bandmates yada yada, keep coming all the way up here time and time again? 1. They might simply be tkkrs who lurk in jkk spaces. I've never ever explored the taekook tag on tumblr because I've never felt the need to. I get all my TK content from army twt itself. It's an old habit of tkkrs and old habits die hard.

2. Maybe they are jkkers who once believed/supported jikook dating and were 100% sure and then their delusions were shattered due to some shipper drama. And now they are in post delulu phase, coping hard by trying to make others experience the same shattering. (That's why I don't choose to believe in any ship being real. It's just too intrusive to assume about their personal lives)

3. They are probably trying to debunk the the jikook mysteries that can't be refuted and still remain top tier- above any other duo dynamics. Gcf tokyo is still the most romantic thing anyone has ever done in 875. Companion enlistment was very much by choice and not due to limited choices. JM tattoo still stares at you in your face. And jikook dynamics still baffle koreans themselves because of how much jk babies jimin. Doesn't change the fact that jikook just prefer to share their free time together and jungkook dedicatedly promoted Face more than Hybe could. (In his own way). Doesn't change the fact that jikook are close enough to bite necks and suck ears.

These anons are just trying to be like the rest of the OT7 army who OT7ify all duos. They are trying to discredit the biggest events between jikook so they can move on maybe.

That's why there is no point getting too much into a ship and scrutinizing how they live their lives. Ships are seriously one of the most fun and cute things about a fandom-giving us so many great pieces of art. Shipping has in fact existed since the Star Wars era. And it doesn't need to have any real life consequences. 875 already show us a lot of themselves on camera and there's no need to expect more. And Jikook are very much a comfort ship. Even though they might not be a real couple, the way they treat each other are relationship goals for me. Yes, the standards are very high!! And they have taught me a lot about love and friendship.

And if people come with ridiculous asks, they are just asking to be trolled, and we shall give them what they desire. 👍

Given that I shared specifically controversial opinions last time, I’ll talk about my more positive views, now.

Anna, Mrs Hughes and Mrs Patmore are my favourite characters! Anna is particularly special to me, what with how unfailingly kind, sunny and hardworking she is, but never at the expense of her sensibility or assertiveness. There’s so much depth to her goodness considering its purity and its perseverance across a series that frequently disservices her, and a very tragic backstory that I deeply wish had been delved into more. I could write dissertations about her, she’s my princess, I adore her.

Mrs Hughes is obviously incredible. She’s the glue holding the household together and she’s never been wrong a day in her life, she’s so effortlessly graceful and generally superior. Mrs Patmore is absolutely hilarious, so witty and, again, right about everything, I’m just delighted every time she’s on screen. Never mind when the two of them - or, better yet, the three of them - are all together!

The romances are top tier. Mr Carson and Mrs Hughes are beautiful in ways that I’m not sure I’ve even fully comprehended - the slow burn, the wars they lived through together, the strength they drew in each other across literal decades as co-leaders of staff, as friends. The wrangling that was required of personalities, of significant differences in opinion, in order for them both to admit to their feelings. Anna and Mr Bates are one of my favourite fictional couples of all time. Here is this man who carries nothing but regret and unhappiness, whose life has been ruled by his mistakes, and he’s been granted another chance at peace and he wants to use it to be a better person. The last thing he’s expecting is to fall in love. But then he meets Anna, and she’s so kind to him, so gentle with him, from the very beginning, and it’s a friendship untouched by ulterior motives, untouched by darkness, because these things don’t exist in Anna’s world, and she’s inviting him to stay there. Their yearning stage is pure perfection, and it leads to such a payoff, once they’re married and Bates can be honest about just how obsessed with her he is, just how little he cares about anything else.

Mr Molesley and Miss Baxter are adorable too - both as individuals and as a couple.

As for upstairs - I’m not unique in that I love Sybil best of the daughters. I love Robert and his Labradors and I love Isobel and Violet. I also love Matthew and Tom Branson, and as far as I’m concerned they’re still brothers-in-law and the Crawleys were untouched by untimely deaths, beyond the Titanic and the war. Oh, and maybe Mr Gregson, because I love Bertie.

Soooo as I thought, v9 caught with me before I had a chance to finish my rewatch, but no reason to cut it when we have 7 days in between episodes lol so back for v5!

I gotta admit this was not my favorite volume, the pacing issues really show in this one and some things felt not well expressed/explained, but still the story and character moments are very great and it contains some of my favorite scenes in the whole show.

Also there's lots of Raven and Ilia how can I complain about that??

Anyways, lets get in!

I gotta say that Triumph is definitely my less favorite opening, I never liked it that much, but it's not saying a lot, because it's still a no-skip when I listen to the rwby playlist and it still fucks. Jeff and Casey don't miss. So basically, it's not bad, it's just that all of them are so good that it's hard to compete lol.

The scene where Blake and Sun talk about how Blake sees every person as a word it's one of those things that live rent-free in my mind <3 Blake's love for her friends is so loud in its quietness, it's beautiful <3

Also her saying that Adam is Spite<3 I love it because while watching reactors they almost always think 'Hate' or 'Violence' but as soon as they hear Spite is like...something just clicks into place. Of course he is spite, it's the only thing that make sense!

I gotta admit that much of why I'm happy about this volume is really just the fact that we got so much Raven lol. I seriously enjoy Raven so freaking much I can't believe it! I can't wait until we finally see her again! Please RT???

No but seriously, every scene with Raven is so enjoyable to me because I really feel there is so much hidden meaning behind all of her interactions. She's another of those characters I can see the bravery and love practically trying to claw their wait out from, but damn this woman is so stubborn and traumatized smh. I hope Tai is able to knock some sense into her sometime.

Also while on the topic of Raven... I still believe that Vernal and her were in some kind of relationship??? Like... There was something there! And Vernal has such a big lesbian energy to me

Anyways, leaving my list of rwby crushes aside... This volume was one of Blake's best<3 I still remember how proud I felt when I heard her speech after battling Ilia and the Albains. My girl was born to lead a revolution<3 also, that speech is just amazing, I think we should all remember it along with Ren's advice to 'take action every time'.

And then she goes and tells Adam to his face that he's not that important? That he's not the center of her life and She's not letting him act like it anymore? That moment was top tier! I can't wait for v6 it's my favorite <3

Yang and Weiss' reunion 🥹 and how tiny Weiss looked while they hugged 😭 I love these two so much!!!

And the moment when they meet with Ruby again and Ruby is panicking in guilt and Yang just hugs her and tells her she loves her because last time we saw them together in v3 Ruby told her she loved her and Yang didn't respond 😭😭😭😭

And then they just inmediatly call Weiss to join them because of course you silly touch-starved princess you're family too!!!

Seriously this volume is just full of character moments that make me all soft 🥹

Listen, I love Nevermore and Bmblb and Armed and ready and Wings and can you beelieve how many songs the ship has already?! as much as every bee shipper...but All that matters Is just my favorite Bee song <3 I love the angsty bees, and I love how undeniably romantic and devoted this song is even if it doesn't mention love a single time.

Cinder really be there insulting Raven's cleverness and inteligence while I'm still 100% sure she doesn't have a single braincell in her head because Neo took it hostage seroously woman, I love you but you're stupid as hell!

While I don't hate Ozpin as part of the FNDM does, that part where he looks at Yang and tells her he's not gonna lie of tell half-truths is one of those that annoy me after v6 lol I get why he is the way he Is .. but still, Yang being angry at him after that was deserved.

Also I've seen that conversation like fifty times already ando the thing that bugs me the most about The volume is that I don't really get why they treat Raven and Qrow turning into birds like it is some kind of abomination lol that's one of the moments I feel didn't translate so well. I get that the actual problem goes way deeper than that, but "why would you do something like that?" Still sounds a little overdramatic lol

Oscar and Ruby training hand to hand has to be one of the cutests scenes this volume lol both these kids are so pure and cute<3

"you can't lose to a girl that wears a skirt" "Ruby you wear a skirt" lol <3 I love the Ruby-Weiss moments<3 also combat skirts FTW!

Again with Yang and Weiss, I couldn't not talk about Alone together <3 again, I really love Weiss taking care of her team with the coffee first and then talking to Yang <3 Weiss reaaaaaally became the best teammate the girls could have.

Also Weiss and Sun being wingman/woman for the bees is my favorite thing<3 they could bond over it maybe lol

Yang crying over Blake 🥹 again, she is the living embodiment of 'I don't care, I say caringly, while I care a lot' and I love that <3

Also Ruby making me cry when she said 'combat ready' and immedialy thought of Penny and just... Lost her light... That was a low blow, still is

The Cinder vs Raven fight is probably my favorite one in the volume though Yang vs the Bandits is hot af and I loved Weiss vs the Lancers but honestly, I can't not laugh when they get out the giant swords lmao what was that? What was the use of that? Lol I love it

The fact that RT didn't make Pilot boy explicitly gay because they were gonna kill him off and then regretted it because the fandom just latched onto him lol that's still one of my favorite v5 funfacts

I gotta say I kinda love how this story is way bigger than any of the characters involved. I remember how many people were mad that they just ended the white fang plot with the quick capture of the Albains and the Faunus army, and then how many more got angry when Adam was finally killed next season, but it makes sense because the end goals are bigger than these villains... And sadly bigger than the heroes too, hence why Nobody is trully safe.

Yang proving again and again that she has gotten smarter while fighting is so sexy of her<3 She's learned to prioritize, to slow down and, as Taiyang told her, find out of there's a way around the fight, which is why her final confrontación with Raven is so rewarding to watch, and why it makes sense.

Again I really want to see Raven again <3 pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease!!!

I get they wanted to end the volume on a kind-off cliffhanger/hint of next path, but Oscar, my dear, you really didn't need to try so hard to deliver that message lol I'm sure they could've waited a couple hours for you to say it.

There's probably a lot I'm forgetting but like... I kind of really want to keep going because my favorite volume is next!! So I'm gonna leave here!

I rewatched Top Gun Maverick over the weekend and even though the point of The Hard Deck intro was to establish that they all knew each other carnally, I'm feeling very into Hangman/Phoenix at the moment because who doesn't love a pairing with two extremely attractive people being shitheads to each other while secretly wanting to bone?

I feel a flare up of "why didn't Grace and Daniel make out in Ready Or Not?" at least once a month so that's still a thing, I guess. Adam Brody deserves better than being a second tier character in those dumb Shazam movies.

I miss seeing Kyle Valenti's face every week for two minutes an episode on Roswell, New Mexico so I am still extremely bitter that my garbage CW show got cancelled (except that I genuinely believe the first season was stellar and not just because every music cue was from the 90s) and after four seasons of wanting someone to love Kyle Valenti back, we fiiiiiiiinally got Kyle and Isobel getting together in the last episode after a season of secret and not so secret pining only so they could have...one minute of screen time together in which they...didn't even kiss? THANKS FOR DEPRIVING ME OF ALL THE NICE THINGS. Am I ever going to stop being bitter over not getting to see them date or make out or do all the things that Lily Cowles probably put up on her vision board? NO, I WILL NOT. 1st ever ship: I can't think that far back! I'm sure there were many before this but off the top of my head, my first thought after "I'm too ancient to remember this" was that Tommy and Kimberly in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers ruled. Remember the proverbial water cooler discussions in elementary school when they introduced the green ranger? SPECTACULAR. Ah, back in the days when we thought some dude using a flute to summon a robot dragon was the height of being a bad ass. (Side note: the Power Rangers movie with Dacre Montgomery and Naomi Scott doesn't get enough credit for being a really good time. They teased a sequel that will never happen because not enough people recognize a good reboot!!!)

last song: Last week, I was inexplicably listening to A LOT of Dave Matthews Band live performances. I guess the inexplicable bit is that last week Spotify's Discover Weekly decided to randomly put a Stevie Nicks cover of "Crash Into Me" on my playlist, which sent me into a DMB spiral - I know this is deeply uncool because anyone who was alive in the 90s heard that song at least once a day for YEARS on the radio so we are all hardwired to roll our eyes at them, but this spiral led me to this (in which the late great LeRoi Moore's sax solo is the closest I will ever come to understanding Damien Chazelle's obsession with jazz) and, even more spectacularly, this, which is worth even listening to in the background. But actually none of that is what I've been listening to more recently. I was on call the other night and the only thing that got me through 48 hours on 4 hours of sleep was Tina Turner, particularly "Nutbush City Limits."

Chase/Zoey?

When I started shipping it if I did: Immediately, aka many years ago when I was about ten. I can't remember the first episode I watched but I remember watching Spring Break-Up followed by Surprise and I was completely sold.

My thoughts: As much as I like Season 3 and what it did for Chase's character, it would have been nice to have more of the dynamic that was in Season 2. They were arguably more coupley in that season, compared to Season 3 where they sometimes seem a bit separate except when there's a designated "hey, they still like each other!" scene.

What makes me happy about them: Friends to lovers is one of the greatest tropes of all time and when they were good, they were so good at fulfilling this trope. The friendly flirting, the pining, the fear, the trust. Top tier.

What makes me sad about them: The angst, the missed opportunities, all of Season 4, Jamie Lynn's acting ability.

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: When people write them as breaking and making up constantly. I assume it's based on the multiple conflict episodes they had, but on the whole they had a very steady, stable, important friendship which is why it mattered when they argued. Also hate anything where they get married immediately after high school and/or have nine million kids.

Things I look for in fanfic: Zoey being deeply in love with Chase but in a believable way. She's probably not going to scream it from the rooftops but it should be clear that she reciprocates Chase's feelings equally.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:  Chase/Lola, Zoey/someone nice and kinda boring.

My happily ever after for them: Till death do them part, and maybe a little bit more after that.

Who is the big spoon/little spoon: Both, equally.

What is their favorite non-sexual activity: Hanging out and running errands, because it's vaguely fun with each other.

As someone who has been putting Mine and Jo (well, specifically RGGJo, but the premises still apply) in Situations since 2020… It is exceptionally hard to get them in the same room but with the power of mental illness we can make it happen.

Mine started out by poaching more profitable families from under their umbrella organizations, right? The Arakawa Family has always been fairly well-off for a third-tier family (if Masato's allowance is any indication), particularly compared to the Nishikiyama Family who weren't bringing in any profit at all, and Mine has pretty good instincts in terms of sussing out potential.

So it would be worth dropping by the office (probably to get turned away with Yet Another Lecture about codes of honor, Arakawa's pretty old-school). But. You know. Jo Would Be There. I feel like Jo may have considered it a missed opportunity in terms of the family's prosperity (though it's not like he can speak over Arakawa), since Mine's terms are insanely good from a business point of view, although it ultimately proves to be for the best when the Nishikiyama Family and Hakuho Clan dissolve.

On the other hand, very fun to think about what Mine would be in for if he attempted to blackmail them into submission As Per Usual, or what he'd even be able to dig up if he pulled out all stops and looked into them.

Mine does have a tendency to make way more enemies than friends, too, so maybe someone puts a hit on him and the Arakawa Family (i.e. Jo) is assigned to it. The Only Thing That Can Kill Mine Is Himself (Allegedly) so it wouldn't work out, obviously, but it would be epic… Mine could take him…

Or say Mine recovers from Dying and wants to disappear. The whole homeless quarter thing's a "secret," but the Arakawa Family must have some kind of reputation if people specifically go to them to start their new lives. They could be the ones to ship him off to Yokohama. I've always said that plot point makes it so pretty much any dead character could be brought back if it's believable enough that they could know about the Arakawas.

Hell, Mine didn't HAVE to join the Nishikiyama Family, they were just the first "in" he could find and he stumbled upon them basically by accident. It could've been any family. And perhaps if he joined the Arakawa Family instead, his quest for bonds could've had a bit less heartbreak… one or two new dads who're soft on him because he reminds them of their son… Jo wouldn't have anything to complain about either, Mine'd be the top earner for sure…

Or they just happen to be the two guys at the Poppo who happen to be tall enough to look over the shelves and they spend the whole time avoiding eye contact and then never meet again.

Many such scenarios…

Letting her chin go, the engineer pulled away and walked off. Seemed the party was over for her. It was time to add some extra security measures to the treasure hold.

Ranking Series “Just Like Fairy Tail”

Fairy Tail has been compared to several series on MAL. Let's rank them. 

Of course, this is not a rank of the shows themselves. This is a rank to how much like these series are to Fairy Tail.

Also, remember that this is my opinion. This means these are the objective correct answers.

First things first.

One Piece tier

This is the last tier like this for the month, I swear.

One Piece

There are worse comparisons to make of Fairy Tail. But this is so overdone that it deserves its own tier. I've yet to see someone make a compelling comparison between the two.

Moving on.

Bottom Tier

This tier is best described with, "You've only watched these two shows." 

Fate series

I know I made this post, but still...

Sonic X

This is unfair since it's been a while since seeing this. Though I doubt rewatching this would change my mind.

Log Horizon

Fun fact: these two share a director and music composer. That's it.

Sailor Moon

Comparing one of the most seminal magical girl series to anything remotely like Fairy Tail is a sin.  

Re: Zero

I don't think the tone is as terribly different from Fairy Tail as some may believe. But I can't say this is not it.

Plunderer

Plunderer is almost Edolas with more fanservice. Spoilers happen, so the comparison fails.

Low Tier

These shows are bad comparisons, but they're not as bad as the tier under it.

Yamada-Kun and the Seven Witches

It's good that Mashima's assistants picked up romance skills from him. This isn't that great a comparison, though.

DanMachi (Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?)

There weren't dungeons in Fairy Tail until the sequel. 0/10 comparison.

Noragami

This would be higher if multiple different important details were different. Wait a minute...

My Hero Academia

Around the time Fairy Tail was ending, I said the fandoms were similar. MHA's fandom is more toxic.

Naruto

Mashima's able to write women. 0/10 comparison.

Bleach

I only wish Fairy Tail looked as good as Bleach does.

EDENS ZERO

I have a post talking about how bad this comparison is waiting.

Sword Art Online

I never saw this when I liked the series. Now that I don't like SAO, I definitely don't see it.

Fire Force

Natsu and Shinra both have fire powers and are called demons. They also came from the same magazine. That's about it.

FMA: Brotherhood

The plot in Brotherhood is a bit too one-directional for this to work. Also, these ships are a bit overrated. (Great, but not as good as everything else.)

Mid Tier

These comparisons are average. They make sense to see, but not if you know what to look for.

FMA (2003)

Believe it or not, the changes to the anime make this closer to Fairy Tail than the manga was. But not by enough to be much higher.

Fushigi Yugi

This would be a better comparison if Lucy didn't have magic. Among other things.

Rave Master

I was tempted to give this its own tier. Honestly, there are worse things to compare this show to. There are also better things.

Gurren Lagann

The only show in my top 5 that's compared to Fairy Tail. Not as strong of a comparison to warrant being higher.

Blue Exorcist

Forgive me for being an anime-only about this. This would be higher if the series treated Zeref as a more malicious threat throughout the series. And Natsu's dad?

High Tier

These are solid comparisons but are missing a bit to be top-tier.

Hunter X Hunter

If the story was about Natsu and ended at Tartarus, this would be a better comparison to the anime. Both mangas continue, so the comparison fails.

Monster Hunter Orage

Having read this recently, I'd be shocked that this isn't compared to Fairy Tail more. If it weren't four volumes long.

Dragon Ball

I know the joke is that every shonen series is like Dragon Ball. However, Fairy Tail really is like Dragon Ball's overall plot structure. 

Konosuba

The reason this is so high? The plot to defeat the Demon Lord is so low on the series' priorities that it feels like Fairy Tail.

Top Tier

When people make these comparisons, I have to agree with them.

Radiant

This feels like the weakest one in this tier. However, I couldn't help but think about Fairy Tail the whole time I watched both seasons of this anime.

Monster Soul

I've made this joke before, but this is the Mashima work closest to Fairy Tail. In many ways, it feels like Mashima was working out ideas he'd do in Fairy Tail.

Black Clover

I tried denying this was a thing, but I can't anymore. This is the Weekly Shonen Jump title closest to Fairy Tail. The Black Bulls knight squad feels the most like the Fairy Tail guild. 

Pokemon

No, you're not seeing things. As far as the anime goes, Pokemon feels very much in line with Fairy Tail thematically and structurally. How it goes about things is obviously different, but it's the closest thing to Fairy Tail, in my mind.

Durarara is an honorable mention. It’s also pretty similar to the structure of Fairy Tail. However, no one has made the connection on MAL.

I’m actually like- a HUGE multishipper lmao- so it’s hard to pick just one :0

I’d say top 5 tho is:

5.) Henderclair - Lucas/Dustin: this one used to not be as rare back in like s1. But honestly? Died down a bit which is sad— I used to LOVE this one. S3 kinda screwed a lot of ships and Henderclair was NOT spared 😭 pls I miss them.

4.) Joyren - Joyce/Karen: this ship is just *MWAH* top tier. It’s honestly so sweet every time they talk to each other because Joyce is usually anxious and Karen speaks in a calm tone... remind me of anyone? *AHEM* BYLER *AHEM*. Am I projecting my byler ship onto them a bit? YES, but I really like it even besides that— they even held hands in s1, I mean, c’mon. Tbh I ship Joyce with a few people (same as Will DJDJDJDJD omg).

3.) Bancy - Barb/Nancy: Barb had so much potential... WHYYYYYY. I just know there would be so many Bancy and Byler parallels if she was still alive. She was nothing but a good friend to Nancy, ugh. They had pictures together >w< and Nancy twirled her phone cord when talking to Barb. AGHHHH— I’m glad Nancy was shown upset about her death in s2 and it was kinda important that she died bc it drove some of the plot for s1 and s2.

2.) Ronance - Robin/Nancy: I almost didn’t include this one ONLY BECAUSE it’s been gaining a big following rececently. But yeah, immediately I was like NEW SHIP. I’ve seen so many s4 bts photos of them and I’m really rooting for them tbh in s4 :3.

1.) Byerson - Will/Dustin: I just think they’re really sweet anytime they interact. They never fight and they’re always so kind to each other. I like in s1 when Dustin hugs Will at the end 🥺 and in s3 when Will and Dustin are on the hill alone and he invites Dustin to hangout sometime like they used to— my heart. They also just sit back and watch Lucas and Mike mess everything up LOL. Just very pure overall.
