Advice on how to achieve aesthetically pleasing gameplay photos!

UPDATED: 4/22/2024

I made this post earlier today and people were interested in the comments! Which made me more excited to make this post~

this is just some advice from me! this isnt a tutorial or anything of that sort, but I will be linking some things that could be helpful for editing gameplay! :D

First things first, I want to say that I use a graphics overhaul, lighting mods check my resources page for what reshade i use if ur interested.

I just wanted to add these things in since we're talking screenshots + I wanted to share for the no reshade ppl <3

Now we can move on to the advice!

I love the simple style of gameplay editing so much, but for me I love creating an ambience with my posts and put the audience inside of my gameplay. I also enjoy storytelling with gameplay more than just the "usual" gameplay post (when it comes to me). I am currently playing the globetrotter challenge with my sim Daichi. I really went all out with the editing for that gameplay. For this one its very much a virtual collage of my sim doing things. Trying new things and getting inspired by others is always fun and cool! Remember when u do take inspo: link to the inspiration and @ the simmer that inspired u!!

In my other save (my cozy save) I also take creative liberties there.

its more of a cozy vibe & silent story-telling (storytelling w/o the dialogue). for my cozy save i take inspiration from @/stellarfalls. er gameplay really helped me find my niche thing in the way i play the game tbh!

Angles/Screenshots

When you're taking your screenshots, angles are important. Depending on the shot, you're putting emphasis on a specific thing. This post is very helpful and talks about different types of angles/shots and what they mean. Check it out especially if you want to play around with the way you take screenshots!

Reshade

If I want to create a moody or dreamy ambience I can use reshade. Looking for a reshade that will fit the overall vibe is a must or you can make your own~

i know not everyone is able to use reshade because they're not on windows. I highly recommend using photoshop actions to create that ambience you're looking for.

*These can be used in photopea, but it cant read topaz clean. If you want to achieve topaz clean in photopea, check this post out! just something i'd like to add in case people are new to all of this + dont use photoshop. Lastly, I want to say if you decide to edit photos on photopea, it does tend to crash if you upload a big number of photos and slows down. I usually upload like 6 or 8 and then save and repeat the process. Its kinda annoying, but ive been using photopea for a while now so im used to it. My mac users, use early-grapes butter action if you want things to look cleaner and less harsh!! + the other ps actions down below. I used these a lot when I was a mac user. Of course, that comes with extra steps, but I feel its worth it in the end.

I like these photoshop action packs bc theres tons of stuff in here that can help create a reshade like look:

Templates!

I loveeeeeee templates so much!! theres so many out there to use for gameplay. It really adds more to gameplay posts! This can be dust/dirt, film burn, that cute camera template etc etc. templates are really fun to use and play around with~

I usually go on deviantart to find templates to use! if you want to check out my deviantart account you can find it here! I favorite a lot of things I can use for gameplay screenies.

Gifs

making gifs is cool because it brings the gameplay "to life" ~

EZgif is a free website that converts videos to gifs. You'll need a recording program like OBS (which is also free).

i like making gifs when i want to capture a (cute) moment (kisses, hugs, cooking etc etc). Its also cool to capture the weather in game like when its snowing or raining.

Little details

Some people really go all out on editing gameplay posts like adding hair strands and adding more details to sims faces (catchlights, tears, blushing, etc). You dont really have to do this, but I want to mention it anyways! I want to try doing this at some point because I enjoy editing my gameplay posts/photos in general and adding tiny details is fun to me lol. It adds realism to posts, but it isnt necessary!

Procreate is a really good program that you can get if you have an ipad. its 10$ and thats, that. You dont have to make any payments. You can also animate on procreate too if you're down for that!

Find inspiration in other simmers!

the sims community on tumblr is filled with such talented people! Theres lots of gameplay simmers who dont do your typical gameplay posts that you can check out and learn from!!! Ive always struggled with getting the right angles when taking screenies. I looked at other simmers and how they take screenshots & it was really helpful for me since I noticed I would take too many over the shoulder photos on my sims lol.

and to clarify, i'm not the original creator of the theme — but rather, i followed a simple tutorial here! you can find full credits in the description of said video. the tutorial is a little over 20 minutes but trust me, the end result is always worth it (even tho neck pain might be the cost.... you can do it!). good luck on making yours!!! i always have fun adjusting the assets like images or colors to suit my tastes/interests, so i hope you can do that for your personal acc too. have a lovely day as well! ₍⑅ᐢ..ᐢ₎ ♡

3. that's a cycling link! in sugarcube, it looks like this:

where "text 1/2/3" is the text of the links that are cycled. if you'd rather the variable was set to something other than the text (for example, a number or true/false), you can just add it after the option. the sugarcube documentation lays it out pretty clearly :)

1. if you mean the 'resume game' button - that's basically an if statement that checks if there is an autosave and loads it if there is.

if you just mean the general load a save button, it's just a button which loads the save API, which can be done with the run macro:

<<button 'Load Game'>> <<run UI.saves()>> <</button>>

this is the same process for the settings button, which runs UI.settings() instead of UI.saves().

gonna put the explanation of the profile under the cut because it gets a little long!

there are a couple of ways I considered doing the HUD frame - originally (as per this post) it was a background image, with the border bits built into it. this isn't ideal, since it's a big image which takes a while to load, needs a light mode counterpart, and also can act a bit funny with scrolling and scaling - people with their screens set differently to mine (which sort of seems like it's Everyone sometimes) could potentially run into aesthetic jankiness where it's not the right size and the text overlaps the borders, or the scroll isn't seamless.

since i'm nothing if not a control freak, I don't like this. haunted by the idea that someone is perceiving my game in a way i don't want.

so instead of using the background image, I used the border-image setting. there's a couple of issues with this, too: you have to be quite careful with the scaling, as it's very easy to stretch out images; you have to leave space for a much thicker border around the div than you think you'll need; and, especially in this case, you can't set different images for different sides of the div.

i got around this by already having a fairly complicated setup for the way the hud is coded. there are 3 major divs here: the first is the overall #ui-dialog-body.hud div, which contains everything else; then, there's the different sections (directory, profile, achievements), which all have the .section class; then there's the #ui-menu div, with the buttons along the bottom. these divs each have a slightly different image set as their border on one side to create the look of a cohesive frame.

by doing it like this, i can guarantee that the scrolling and scaling will behave themselves, and it all looks neat and coherent :) the border-image css rule can take a bit of messing with to get it looking right, even if you're just using it on the one div, with the one image - i'd highly recommend playing around with the w3schools tutorial on it and see if you can get something simple working with it before you attempt something more like.. this bullshit.

hello! i'm someone who wants to read more poetry but i feel a little intimidated when it comes to choosing which collections to read. there's so many to choose from and i don't know any of the poets, so buying any of them feels like a big gamble. do you have any advice for how someone unfamiliar with poetry can get started finding collections to read?

Poetry Foundation & Poets.org are incredible websites that have a huge range of poets & poems to read for free! Both have a “poem of the day” tab that is a great way to be introduced to poets you’ve never read before! Tumblr is also a great platform for finding new poets and poems to read & I’ve found a few of my favorite poets through following blogs on here! If you see someone post a quote you like I recommend searching the poets name & seeing if they have a website. A lot of poets have links to their works published online on their websites and that can give you an idea about if you’d enjoy picking up their book! Also if you have access to a local library or a bookstore, pop in and read from different books with titles or covers that catch your eye!! You won’t love every collection you read, I certainly don’t!! But the more you read the easier it’ll be to pin down your taste & picking collections will be easier.

Hiya, a follower from youtube (love your work! <3) and am interested in getting into the BL genre (past passion coming back and swimming in choices) so hoping you could give me a rec?

I'm super craving a like QL grey's anatomy/scrubs esque show? I love your descriptions of The Warp Effect, but for some reason I had it in my head it was a medical drama with different excellent arcs between friends set in a hospital. I'm a little disappointed it wasn't what I thought but hope you might know something like what I was expecting

There aren't any one-to-one comparisons to either of those shows, but if you want a more serious drama vibe there's:

Dear Doctor I'm Coming For Soul (thai drama, a doctor and a Grim Reaper in a hospital)

Triage (thai drama, groundhog day style time loop set mostly in a hospital)

there's also My Ambulance which isn't a BL but has a subplot that is, and it's full season-3-grey's-anatomy-heartbreak, so, do with that information what you will. (thai drama, stars PP Krit and Bilkin in their first onscreen pairing)

and if you want more comedy vibes:

Ghost Doctor isn't explicitly a BL but it sure does have those vibes, I wanted Rain and Kim Beom to kiss the whole time (kdrama, a new resident who doesn't want to be a doctor because he can see ghosts is possessed by the ghost of the star surgeon of the hospital who is currently in a coma)

there are probably others, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head!!

Is AO3 safe? I'm wondering if anyone has ever had any troubling things or privacy issues or suspicious comments etc. Some people say “oh but people could find you” “or you might see things you don't want to see” but I think that could happen with literally anything? Do you think parents think differently about it than kids?

In my experience, A03 has been a very pleasant site to use, and I haven’t had any disturbing things happen or anything.

There’s actually a bunch of neat features to prevent things like that from happening!

-You can change the settings so only people who have A03 accounts can access your stories, rather than just anyone on the internet.

-You can monitor comments, which basically means that if someone comments on a story of yours, you have to approve it before it becomes public and actually shows up in the comments section. You can choose to decline it for whatever reason, and the comment will get deleted.

-You can also delete comments made on your stories at any point, regardless of whether you choose to monitor them or not.

-You can block users if you don’t want them interacting with you, and you can mute users if you don’t want to see their content. There’s a better explanation for that here!!

-In addition, A03 has a very effective tagging system. You can basically find anything on there, but you can also choose tags that you don’t want to see—NSFW content, a character you don’t like, triggering content… literally anything you’re uncomfortable with—and in that case, stories that contain those tags won’t show up.

I actually think that A03 is, in many ways, more safe than other sites—Wattpad, for example, doesn’t contain many of those helpful features I listed, and I accidentally ran into a ton of things I didn’t want to see on there. I haven’t really experienced that with A03.

Hi! I have a small question, is college in the UK the same as university? I'm not from there btw so I don't really know the difference ☺

hello my love!! so i actually have no idea, but let me explain college to you!! so in the uk, we finish high school at 16 — but we have to stay in education until we’re 18 — so we have an option of going to college or going into an apprenticeship (which is going into a job, getting paid and learning skills to get into the jobs). if we choose to go into college we can stay there until we’re 18 (or until we’ve gotten our degree).

after we get a degree (a high enough one), we can go into higher education, which is university!! but that is completely our choice!!

i feel like i associate my self worth based on my grades and academics because that’s the only thing i’m kinda good at or at least that i’ll allow myself to accept and idk how to fix it even though it’s so bad

i understand that, anon :( academics can be rlly hard on people, especially when they feel like it determines their self worth. i don't think there's anything wrong with wanting good grades, but i suggest finding ways to detach yourself from that mindset! it's hard to change overnight, but it'll be much better in the long run to start viewing academics as something that's a reward but not a necessity, if that makes sense?? like it's good to have academic goals, but not reaching those goals does not make you any less worthy. it'll be hard, but thinking that way will really change the way you feel about yourself and help you become happier in the future!! for me, i met good friends who helped me feel comfortable with myself and made me feel like i was important in their lives and not a burden. i suggest finding ppl like that! and just know that to me, i value u as a person and i think you're wonderful <3

this is a poster i made for my call to action assignment in humanities! it's a bunch of basic and easy stretches for people who sit and work at a desk all day (me)

the idea is that you'd put the poster up above ur desk and do the stretches every 30 minutes or so,, the whole routine won't take more than about 6 minutes to complete and when done regularly it can prevent wrist, shoulder, neck and back pain! :)

all these stretches can be done while sitting (although i HIGHLY recommend you stand up and move around while taking a break from working)

Ahmed Saad or @/90-ghost's brother in law is currently doing his best to organise the evacuation of his family from Gaza. This family suffers from a combination of ailments that all require medical attention. This is the description on their GFM page:

Hello, I hope you all are doing well!

My name is Mohamed Monir Ahmad Mahmoud, I’m a hemophilia patient from Gaza. I decided to start this campaign with all the hope that you could support me in evacuating Gaza to do surgery for me and my daughter and start a fresh life with my 5 kids out of the ongoing genocide in Gaza [...] I was supposed to go out at the end of 2023 to have surgery on my knees but since 7 October, I had no chance due to the procedures on Rafah crossing, the gate of Gazans to the world. Now, my knees and elbows are bleeding with no access to any type of care and if things stand as they are in Gaza, I won’t be able to walk or make any effort because of the bleeding (currently I am barely able to set up a small fire in front of the tent to prepare food for my kids).

What I ask is 60,000, for travel costs because each one would need to pay 5,000-8,000$ to be allowed to leave Gaza through Rafah crossing and we need around 3000$ more in Egypt for our stay and to obtain visas. We will be heading to Brazil where my brother Diaa lives and there is a huge chance to do the surgeries and access health care as the health care for Hemophilia patients in Brazil is one of the most advanced in the world.

When Senshi was young in the dungeon the majority of the adults he were with ostracized him. All except Gillin, who died to make sure Senshi had something to eat: unseasoned boiled meat that may or may not have been one of their comrades.

It really puts into perspective why he was so nurturing towards Chilchuck. When Chil reveals he’s 28 to the party, Senshi responds by telling him that he thought he was older. Senshi was in his 30s when he and his comrades got trapped in the dungeon, so it’s safe to assume that he thought Chil was at a similar age.

He met a young boy who was, from his perspective, forced to do dangerous work in the dungeon just like he was, and so, Senshi made an effort to look after Chilchuck in the same way Gillin looked after him.

Mind you, when Senshi was young in the dungeon he had to starve for weeks, eat the horse he loved, and finish it off spending the next i don’t know how many years wondering if he committed cannibalism.

Senshi understands first hand the value of nutrition and proper eating, so when he’s with the party he makes an effort to make sure they’re all eating a full and balanced diet. Not only that, but Senshi INVOLVES them in the process of getting food to eat, always preparing it in front of them and narrating every ingredient in the process so that there’s no doubt about what they’re eating.
