I think I have a different perspective on what Theo's personality is like compared to fanon. Like, I see fics where he's aggressive and super assertive, but I just can't see him like that??? To me he is so calm and indifferent. Like, he's sarcastic and a little shit (/affectionate), but he's also the kind of person who has a very "yeah I don't fucking care for this, I'll will just stand here on my own" personality

Learning that fans hated Applejack and called her "boring" is crazyyy to me because I genuinely, unironically believe AJ's the most complex character in the main six.
Backstory-wise, she was born into a family of famers/blue collar workers who helped found the town she lives in. She grew up a habitual liar until she had the bad habit traumatized outta her. She lost both her parents and was orphaned at a young age, having to step up as her baby sister's mother figure. She's the only person in the main gang who's experienced this level of loss and grief (A Royal Problem reveals that AJ dreams about memories of being held by her parents as a baby). She moved to Manhattan to live with her wealthy family members, only to realize she'll never fit in or be accepted, even amongst her own family. The earlier seasons imply she and her family had money problems too (In The Ticket Master, AJ wants to go to the gala to earn money to buy new farm equipment and afford hip surgery for her grandma).
Personality-wise, she's a total people-pleaser/steamroller (with an occasional savior complex) who places her self worth on her independence and usefulness for other people, causing her to become a complete workaholic. In Applebuck Season, AJ stops taking care of herself because of her obsessive responsibilities for others and becomes completely dysfunctional. In Apple Family Reunion, AJ has a tearful breakdown because in she thinks she dishonored her family and tarnished her reputation as a potential leader –– an expectation and anxiety that's directly tied to her deceased parents, as shown in the episode's ending scene. In The Last Roundup, AJ abandons her family and friends out of shame because believes she failed them by not earning 1st place in a rodeo competition. She completely spirals emotionally when she isn't able to fulfill her duties toward others. Her need to be the best manifests in intense pride and competitiveness when others challenge her. And when her pride's broken, she cowers and physically hides herself.
Moreover, it's strongly implied that AJ has a deep-seated anger. The comics explore her ranting outbursts more. EQG also obviously has AJ yelling at and insulting Rarity in a jealous fit just to hurt her feelings (with a line that I could write a whole dissection on). And I'm certain I read in a post somewhere that in a Gameloft event, AJ's negative traits are listed as anger.
Subtextually, a lot of these flaws and anxieties can be (retroactively) linked to her parents' death, forcing her to grow up too quickly to become the adult/caregiver of the family (especially after her big brother becomes semiverbal). Notice how throughout the series, she's constantly acting as the "mom friend" of the group (despite everything, she manages to be the most emotionally mature of the bunch). Notice how AJ'll switch to a quieter, calmer tone when her friends are panicking and use soothing prompts and questions to talk them through their emotions/problems; something she'd definitely pick up while raising a child. Same with her stoicism and reluctance at crying or releasing emotions (something Pinkie explicitly points out). She also had a childhood relationship with Rara (which, if you were to give a queer reading, could easy be interpreted as her first 'aha' crush), who eventually left her life. (Interestingly enough, AJ also has an angry outburst with Rara for the same exact reasons as with EQG Rarity; jealous, upset that someone else is using and changing her). It's not hard to imagine an AJ with separation anxiety stemming from her mother and childhood friend/crush leaving. I'm also not above reading into AJ's relationship with her little sister (Y'all ever think about how AB never got to know her parents, even though she shares her father's colors and her mother's curly hair?).
AJ's stubbornness is a symptom of growing up too quickly as well. Who else to play with your baby sister when your brother goes nonverbal (not to discount Big Mac's role in raising AB)? Who else to wake up in the middle of the night to care for your crying baby sister when your grandma needs her rest? When you need to be 100% all the time for your family, you tend to become hard-stuck with a sense of moral superiority. You know what's best because you have to be your best because if you're aren't your best, then everything'll inevitably fall apart and it'll be your fault. And if you don't know what's best –– if you've been wrong the whole time –– that means you haven't been your best, which means you've failed the people who rely on you, which means you can't fulfill your role in the family/society, which makes you worthless . We've seen time and time again how this compulsive need to be right for the sake of others becomes self-destructive (Apple Family Reunion, Sound of Silence, all competitions against RD). We've seen in The Last Roundup how, when no longer at her best, AJ would rather remove herself from her community than confront them because she no longer feels of use to them.
But I guess it is kinda weird that AJ has "masculine" traits and isn't interested in men at all. It's totally justified that an aggressively straight, misogynistic male fandom would characterize her as a "boring background character." /s

thinking about how dean’s character gets simplified in fandom, or more specifically, the very black and white lens that gets applied to him. because integral to dean, from my point of view, is that he is both a victim of abuse and a perpetrator of it. that these two things do not cancel each other out or outweigh each other to the point that only one matters. he’s both, you cannot separate him from the fact that he’s both.
but very often, people do. dean is either a victim. or he’s an abuser. it’s like it’s hard for people to hold both those facts in their heads at once. dean went through incredible amount of trauma as a child and an adult, is routinely faced with violence, has resorted to alcohol abuse to cope with it. he’s also a violent person, someone who retreats into tactics of emotional abuse and control when he feels threatened, who hurts the people around him constantly and the people who are closest to him (ie Sam, Cas, later Jack) get the brunt of that abuse. these are just facts. they’re things that happened on the screen and cannot be denied.
and it’s. idk it’s weird to me (not unexpected, because he’s hardly the only character to ever get this treatment) that dean of all people is the one portrayed in such an either/or way when one of the defining moments of the show for him is that during his stint in Hell, he was tortured and then became a torturer to escape that, to feel like he had some control again, and he relished in it. it’s baked into who he is.

mostly self-indulgent roach hcs [because i too don't talk to people much and have survived near death experiences]:
• roach really doesn't like certain textures [hence why he wears so much gear to keep his body covered] and wears ear defenders [albeit connected to the rest of the team so he can hear orders] on missions because he's sensitive to sound and if he was to hear ALL of it, he'd be in pain and discomfort. all the gunshots and shouting n shit. however, he's proven time and time again to his superiors that he's well able to follow commands and keep himself safe even when he has them on, so he's allowed to wear them as much as he likes to be comfortable-- because often, we work better when we're comfortable in our environment, or at least stress slightly less.
• when he goes back to base after a mission he's EXHAUSTED. completely. he just flops down in his quarters and tries to sleep, curling into himself to be comfy with what little blankets they get in the army [it's the military after all, not a goddamn hotel]. but he's soso sleepy. he wants a nap. he wants bed.
• he isn't good at socialising. not really at all tbh. and being mute makes it so much worse. he doesn't know how to approach people, so he just sits in the sidelines watching them interact, but if he thinks they're looking back at him, he looks away, acting like he never even saw them and nothing's happening at all. the only one he's close to is ghost because they've been in so many missions together. plus, ghost is the more chilled out one. soap is a captain, all serious. he also struggles with eye contact and the team has just accepted that even if he's not directly looking into their eyes, he's still paying attention.
• he fidgets a lot. rubbing his fingers together or on nice textures or maybe making a little repetitive noise. he likes to do things with his hands and dislikes being completely unoccupied when awake.
• roach follows his orders obviously but wouldn't want to be around him as a "friend." not that he DISLIKES his captain, but he just feels like there's a large power imbalance between him, merely a sergeant, and a full-blown captain with a straight face and rough voice. he kinda feels small beside him.
• he likes fluffy animals. he's more gentle than the rest of the team off missions, and sometimes he'll just get all excited seeing a fox or a stray cat/dog or a rabbit or something passing by and want to pet it, even though he knows he shouldn't.
• he CANONICALLY has a journal, but im willing to bet sometimes he doodles in there too, so it isn't bland. like if he saw something interesting/important or maybe was simply bored, he'd just do a little doodle. he's a visual thinker, so pictures help him remember.
• he once had some small pet bugs, which he cared about quite a lot. however, after a long mission that lasted a good week or so, he came back to them dead. he cried over it with his head in his hands.
• he has autism and adhd. also a dissociative disorder of some sort, or something. his identity is very unstable and he never really feels fully "present." [<- projecting]
• he's pansexual but also graysexual/grayromantic. he doesn't experience much attraction, but when he does, the gender doesn't matter.

one of the things that gets me about fanon lens - especially when you entrench yourself so much in a fan version of a character - is how a character can just slowly be stripped of what they are and who they are because of the self referential nature of fanworks (which isn't inherently bad, don't misunderstand; neglected characters can have new life breathed into them)
which is a long way of getting to: where did people get the idea that estinien's not one to talk, or is bad at effectively talking? I don't mean selectively mute hcs, i mean just very curt. like he's not as flowery as many of the scions or even compared to aymeric, but he's still dramatic and talks a lot. he's precise when he needs to be and extremely blunt, but just because of that doesn't mean he won't ramble
like his whole tangent about where he is today because of the wol right before the Dead Ends in Ultima Thule. his chattiness seems to fluctuate with how comfortable he is with someone, so i'm not really sure where "estinien's bad with words" came from?
he's no politician, but he's good at saying what needs to be said and saying it in a way that matters. yes, there is the whole aymeric thing but avoiding a difficult conversation rooted in guilt isn't the same as being bad at talking. he clearly knows how to get to people - especially to antagonize them into action (see: tiamat, azdaja) - so where did this come from?

when i was younger (and i don’t mean like “a literal child” younger, i used to do this up until i was like 16) i used to go around barefoot all the time. literally. i would walk around my yard barefoot, i would walk my dog barefoot (i lived in private sector at that point so there weren’t as many people around on the street), i even walked barefoot in the center of my town a couple of times. when i went to summer camps i would just go around barefoot for a whole month straight (in the beginning the counselors tried to stop or reprimand me but at some point they just accepted it as i thing i did).
and i really think that eddie would be like that too. he would definitely walk around barefoot all the time when he was younger because shoes felt weird sometimes and he would like feeling the ground, the grass, the asphalt under his feet. and wayne would be really worried about it at first, but then it would become another “eddie thing” for him and he would just sigh and tell him to be careful and watch where he steps. and at some point, as he grew older, eddie would stop, but i can imagine him showing up to school with no shoes on at some point and just walking around the school barefoot the whole day for the chaos. and he would still sometimes do that around trailer park when he’s alone.

even tho i didn't care for his tag 2 ending much, i do think it showcases a good example of how jin feels and expresses emotion.
jin loses his mother for the second time (realizing he unwittingly destroyed her when she was unknown) but we don't really see much reaction from him. he just... stares, his face remains unchanged. jin expresses nothing from this. it wasn't until dj took over that dj starts screaming and throwing a fit.
this is how i feel jin experiences emotions. he doesn't experience them like many people do. he's not expressive with them at all. but he does feel them strongly, even if it's not apparent. that's why dj takes over, because jin was going through so much, that he couldn't keep control. and it's his emotions that are influencing dj.
i just think it's something that makes jin a very interesting character. which is why i don't care for when certain medias (like the netflix anime) does make jin openly emotional. because yes, jin is emotional... it's just hard to tell with how he handles those emotions.
