Ahhh ok I’m excited. Can I ask what your inspirations for Penelope and Leo were?
Ooh! They're some of my older ocs so this might get a little long but lemme see what I can put together.
Leo was one of the first characters I came up with in this whole extended world thing I've got going on. Funny enough this entire thing started as non-serious kinda jokey "I should come up with a dating sim concept and create all the different characters you could date." Leo predates my other characters even further by being a character in one of my earlier concept groups before I scrapped that, took him, and decided on a whole dating sim around the concept of dating demons in hell lol.
It's funny to think back on bc it rlly all did start as something not that serious. I was thinking about different dating sim archetypal character traits with the five characters I was creating, and when I got to Leo I pulled from various tropes.
He was the goofy jokey himbo type, kinda stupid but also more down to earth. But then it’d be a twist where, despite seeming straight forward, you'd get into his tragic sad backstory and a deeper side of his character would be revealed.
To be completely honest, while not the only inspiration or example, at the time mystic messenger was still mildly relevant in the dating sim world. So, while they couldn't be MORE different, 707 kind of was what made me want to go for creating a "Funny silly guy who's actually got some sad stuff going on." character sdfghj.
He was made to be a foppish Prince Charming that was cursed to become a demon. His backstory was supposed to be storybook fairytale stuff, resulting in a beauty and the beast sort of situation. It was tragic but not as fleshed out.
It stayed that way for a while but eventually when I started getting more serious and sharing this stuff with Thea, I began to go through and develop a lot of my different characters backstories. Lightly moving away from the dating sim elements to expand the broader world.
This is where Penelope would come in (and not long after Giselle and Caspian would follow hehe @dapper-comedy) I ended up really ironing out his story. I wanted to make Leo more sympathetic while still being at fault. Straying from prince charming to a more general, almost arthurian, hero prince type. Less arrogant, more well meaning, but still ultimately flawed in his desire to be an "ideal" prince.
Penelope on the other hand used to play a much smaller role in the story! Initially the story simply went that Leo was cursed by a witch as retribution for a wrong he committed, the curse stipulated that if his loved ones shunned his demonic form, then he’d stay a demon. And when he showed up as a demon, his fiancé rejected him.
But as I started going back, I thought it was a bit unfair to his fiancé that she existed more as a plot device for his initial story. So I went about giving her more complex motivations/wants and fears/etc and Penelope was born! She’s inspired by my wholly self indulgent desire to make female characters who are allowed to be awful and make horrible mistakes, while also being not entirely unjustified. (Penelope takes up so much brain real estate nowadays, it's almost surprising that I came up with Leo first sdfghj)
It feels pretentious to say but the groundwork being inspired by storybook fairy tales led the overall feeling to be inspired by classic tragedies. It all really came together when Caspian and Giselle came into the picture, leading to an overarching story of these four young friends not realizing the joy of their youth together until they slowly lose not just that youth, but each other.

if you love him let him go (if you love him let him know)
pre-buddie, bucktommy | T | 3k | angst, pining tommy needs to tell eddie something not on ao3 atm because i can't figure out if this is done or if i'm continuing it - please let me know your thoughts! now on ao3 because i hate not having all my fic in one place
“Can I get you another beer, man?”
Eddie checks his watch. It’s only a little after nine thirty. He’s kind of hoping to get home before Chris goes to sleep, but he’ll not be heading to bed any time soon, will likely stay up later than Eddie. Friday night means he disregards his supposed bedtime — not that he sticks to it that well on school nights, now he’s sixteen. “Sure, thanks.”
Tommy nods, disappears into the kitchen, returns a moment later with a can of IPA in one hand, a bottle of lager in the other. They’ve already finished the six-pack Eddie brought over, but trust Buck — well, Buck and Tommy — to have Eddie’s favorite beer in their fridge. Tommy hands over the can, already cracked open, and Eddie takes a sip as Tommy settles down at the opposite end of the couch. He doesn’t turn to face the TV, sits twisted towards Eddie instead, but he does pick up the remote and turn down the volume, the post-fight commentary rendered nearly unintelligible.
“I wanted to talk to you about something.”
Eddie twists towards Tommy himself, something not-quite-anxious-but-almost flaring in his chest. Over the years they have been friends, he and Tommy have spoken about lots of things, including those not so easy to discuss: their respective experiences in the army, Tommy’s tough childhood, Eddie’s difficult parents, the hard aspects of the job. But they’ve all been topics that have come up naturally, raised organically. Tommy has never led into anything with such a pointed opener before.
Eddie studies him. He has one knee pulled up on the couch cushion, foot poking out off the end, the other foot planted on the floor, nearly parallel to the base of the couch. One arm is up on the backrest, the other relaxed, beer bottle in that hand, resting on his thigh, dripping condensation painting a charcoal ring on his — probably Buck’s, in fact, given how tight the fabric is stretched over the muscle of his leg — grey sweats. He’s not tense, but he’s not smiling, and there’s something about his expression that Eddie can’t place. It’s not that he hasn’t seen this look before, because he’s pretty sure he has, witnessed it in flickers across numerous occasions over the years, there and then gone, present for but a heartbeat. But he’d never known what it meant any of those times and he certainly doesn’t now.
“'Course,” Eddie says, when Tommy doesn’t go on, seems to be waiting for some kind of sign. Then adds, feeling like it’s necessary given the gravity he can feel pulling this lightsome evening down to something more serious.  “Anything.”
Tommy sighs, bites his lip like he doesn’t want to speak, even though he’s the one who said he wanted to talk, then shakes his head and takes a pull of his beer.
“Is everything okay?” Eddie’s starting to feel worried now. He mentally scans back over the past few weeks, trying to remember if Tommy has mentioned anything about work that could be a problem. He saw him at basketball last week, and nothing had seemed off. Plus, Buck hasn’t said anything. Not that he’d necessarily tell Eddie about an issue Tommy was having, not if Tommy wanted it kept private, but Eddie can usually tell when Buck’s concerned about someone, and he hasn’t picked up on anything, not at all.
But maybe this isn’t about a problem Tommy is having. Maybe this is a Buck problem, something Buck has kept from Eddie. It would make sense why Tommy would bring it up with him; sometimes a concerted, multi-person effort is the only way to get through to Buck. And Tommy’s more likely to bring in Eddie first, and then expand the team to include Maddie, Chim, more, as needed.
“Is Buck okay?” Eddie asks, something like panic constricting his throat, making the words come out a little strangled.
Tommy actually laughs at that, a small, choked thing, an exhale of sound and air. He shakes his head again, but not a no. More like an extension of the laugh, a motion to accompany it, to better convey the disbelief — not humor — contained in it. “He’s fine.”
It’s a relief to hear. Buck had seemed physically okay, when Eddie had seen him briefly before he left the house, since he’d maybe purposefully waited to order his Uber until Buck pulled up in his jeep outside, despite Christopher’s insistence he didn’t need to wait for Buck to arrive, despite the fact that his kid is more than old enough to be left in the house alone for the twenty minutes it would have taken Buck to drive over, while Eddie was ferried the opposite way. But there could still have been something, Buck could have been fighting through pain, much better at hiding any hurt of his body than he is at masking his emotional distress.
“But,” Tommy says, and that one word is enough to have Eddie’s muscles tightening once more, “It is Evan I wanted to talk about.”
Again, Tommy doesn’t follow it up with anything. Eddie has found, in their time as friends, that Tommy is not often a man lost for words. Quite the opposite, in fact. He usually says what he means, means what he says, and is an expert at listening and delivering sage advice. This reticence– it doesn’t feel like it bodes well, has the hair on the back of Eddie’s neck prickling.
“Alright,” Eddie says, a feeble prompt. “So, Buck?”
Tommy nods, like he’s gearing himself up for something, to face a challenge, to take a punch. Eddie is expecting something bad, so the words he says catch him even more off guard than they would have. “I want to ask Evan to marry me.”
Maybe if Tommy had seemed eager, excited, when he turned to him, Eddie could have anticipated the blow, could have felt a creeping suspicion this is where Tommy was headed, could have been provided with enough of a heads-up to brace himself. As it is, he doesn’t see the hit coming, takes it full force to the chest, so hard it steals his breath, knocks the wind from him. His mouth goes slack, and he feels his fingers slide against the slippery sides of his beer can, almost spills it over Tommy and Buck’s lounge carpet before he gets a hold on it, on himself. He forces himself to smile. “That’s– that’s great,” he makes himself say, only faintly aware that Tommy isn’t smiling back, like this moment should call for. “Did you–” he swallows around the bile climbing his esophagus, “Do you want help planning the proposal?” He wishes he could take the words back the second they’re out. Because this — just hearing that Tommy wants to ask Buck — is torture enough. To be involved with it, to help enable it, Eddie will be lucky if it doesn’t kill him. Maybe not his body, but certainly his soul.
“No.” Tommy shakes his head. “No, I want to ask him to marry me. But I’m not going to. At least, not now.”
Eddie squints at him. The news that Tommy wants to marry Buck might hurt Eddie, but it’s not exactly surprising. Eddie’s seen how much Tommy cares for him in the years they’ve been together, has seen the way he looks at him, the way they look at each other. Has felt the way it burns him, the scorching heat of flame, the searing cold of ice. He doesn’t understand what Tommy is saying, doesn’t understand why this proclamation seems not to be a happy one. “Why not?” Eddie asks, almost grateful for the opportunity to present confusion, curiosity, rather than forced pleasure at the thought of one of his closest friends and his– best friend marrying each other. “You guys are serious. I mean, you live together.”
Tommy huffs another laugh, still more disbelief than humor, really the opposite of humor. “His lease was up.”
“Right. But he chose not to renew it. He chose to move in with you,” Eddie says, slow, struggling to understand, the pounding of his pulse not helping him think clearly, see through the puzzle that is everything Tommy has said so far and the way he has said it.
“He was never going to renew it,” Tommy tells him.
And that’s– that’s something Eddie didn’t know. He hates it when he learns information about Buck from Tommy, always has, even though he fights with everything in him not to feel like that. Tommy is Buck’s boyfriend, of course he’s going to know things about him that Eddie doesn’t, know him in a way that Eddie doesn’t.
“We hadn’t spoken about living together,” Tommy says, eyes on Eddie. “But he’d said he thought the loft was too expensive and he was spending nearly every night at mine by that point. When he wasn’t on shift. Or at yours.” Eddie pulls his eyes away, takes a sip from his beer for something to do, even though the bitter taste is turning his stomach. “He said he wasn’t going to renew it, that he’d look for somewhere new, cheaper. But this was too close to the end of his lease to find a place before he had to move out. I asked where he was going to stay in the meantime.”
“And he said with you,” Eddie guesses, more a statement than a question.
But Tommy shakes his head. A smile curls his lips but his eyes– his eyes don’t match. “He said he’d crash on your couch, actually.”
Eddie takes another mouthful of beer, holds it there, on the back of his tongue. He didn’t know any of this. Buck would, of course, have been more than welcome. Likely why he hadn’t asked in advance, why he planned for it without seeking permission.
“I said he could stay with me, instead. That he’d be able to sleep in a bed here.” Eddie swallows, the beer somehow thick and cloying in a way that it shouldn’t be. “And then when he started making noises about looking for a new place, I told him he should stay.”
While it’s not how Eddie had, unwillingly, pictured it in his head — Tommy and Buck mutually agreeing that Buck shouldn’t renew his lease, deciding they wanted to live together — it still doesn’t explain what Tommy has said. “And he did stay,” Eddie says. “So, why aren’t– Does Buck not want to get married?” But that can’t be it, that can’t be right. Eddie is certain Buck does want to be married, only he’d tried hard not to think of Buck wanting that with Tommy, with anyone. Anyone else.
“No, he does,” Tommy confirms it. He leans over and deposits his beer on the coffee table. Then sits back, still turned to Eddie, but arms crossed over his chest, like a protection of himself. “We’ve spoken about it, discussed it. And he’s told me he’s always wanted that, to get married, to be part of a family.” Tommy pops one hand out of the fold of his arms to hold it up, out, quelling, like Eddie has protested. He hasn’t, but his heart is doing something approximating a riot at the idea of Tommy being Buck’s family. “And I know he has a family. He knows he does. In you and Chris, in Maddie and Jee, in the 118. But–” Tommy breaks off, tips his head to the side, gaze boring into Eddie’s face so strong that Eddie wishes he could turn away, duck and run. “You know how much he’s always wanted to belong somewhere.”
He does, Eddie thinks, the thought almost violent in its intensity. He belongs with me. Except, he doesn’t. Not really, not how Eddie wants, not the way he does with Tommy.
“And I want that for him,” Tommy goes on, tucking his hand back in, squeezing his arms tighter about himself. Eddie’s never seen him like this, hunched in on himself, curled small. Tommy is usually so open, larger than life. “I want to be the one to give that to him.”
Eddie wants to be the one to give that to him. Desires it desperately, a secret need he’s tucked as far inside himself as he can. He can feel it now, raging to be let out, to be set free. But he can’t, he won’t. Buck is with Tommy, he’s happy with Tommy. Tommy who is so warm and kind and good, Tommy who is better than Eddie in every conceivable way, who brings so much to Buck’s life, who gives all of himself to Buck. Who wants to give him even more. Wants to, but apparently won’t.
Eddie doesn’t understand. “Then, if you want to, why won’t you ask him?” he questions, trying to.
“If I ask him now, he’ll say no.” Tommy states it like indisputable fact, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world that Buck would refuse him.
Eddie shakes his head, understanding even less. “But he loves you.”
Tommy smiles again, then, larger than he had before, but as devoid of happiness, as empty of cheer. This smile hurts to see, reflects the way Eddie felt inside when Tommy had said I want to ask Evan to marry me. “I know he does.” Tommy’s tone is sure, but wistful. “But he loves you more.”
It’s like– It’s like nothing Eddie has ever felt. Or maybe it’s like everything he’s ever felt. The shock of a residual lightning bolt, the joy of being a part of the 118, the pain of a bullet ripping through his shoulder, the awe of holding his son for the first time. Eddie wants Tommy’s words to be true maybe more than he’s ever wanted anything. But he also cannot believe them, has no trust that they are true. Because they can’t be. Buck loves Tommy. Not Eddie.
“We’re friends. Best friends,” Eddie points out. “Of course, he– he loves me. But not more. Not like he loves you. He’s in love with you.”
Tommy sighs, arms uncrossing, palms coming to rest on his thighs, body taking on a posture Eddie is familiar with, the one he falls into when he’s talking someone through something, the one he adopted when Eddie came out to him some six months ago. “Eddie, he’s in love with you.”
Eddie shakes his head. It’s everything he’s ever wanted to hear, but coming from the wrong lips. Spoken by not by Buck himself but by Buck’s boyfriend, oh god. “He isn’t. Tommy, he can’t be.”
But Tommy is nodding, nodding like what he’s said is true, like he wants Eddie to believe it.
“He’s not,” Eddie says, hears the denial, the disbelief spill from him. Buck doesn’t love him. He doesn’t. But Eddie– Eddie loves– “I’m sorry,” Eddie says, almost a gasp. “Tommy, I’m sorry, I–”
“It’s not your fault,” Tommy cuts him off. “I knew what I was getting into. When I started seeing Evan, I knew there were going to be three people in this relationship. I just–” Tommy sighs again, scrubs his palms along his thighs. “I didn’t expect it to get this far. I thought we’d just be a fun, easy thing. Something to ease Evan into his sexuality, that new part of himself. I didn’t expect it to go like this. I didn’t expect to feel like this.” Tommy closes his eyes, lashes falling to his cheeks. He breaths in and out, while Eddie’s own breath is caught in his chest. When Tommy opens his eyes, he says, “But I don’t have to tell you how easy it is to love him.”
Fuck. Tommy knows. Because Eddie does. He loves Buck, loves him so endlessly he doesn’t know where the feeling starts and where it ends. Doesn’t know when it started; doesn’t think it will ever end. “I’m sorry,” Eddie whispers, needing to say the words again, needing Tommy — his friend — to hear them.
Tommy lifts one palm from his thigh, his wrist pressing into the muscle as he cuts his fingers to the side in a dismissal. “Don’t apologize for it. I’m certainly not going to. I’m never going to be sorry for loving him.” He drops his hand back down, pats his leg, emphasis of the point. “But it is a problem.” He smiles, rueful. “I thought I’d be able to break up with him, if he didn’t break up with me. I should have, ages ago. I certainly should have when you came out.”
Eddie, selfishly, had hoped Buck would break up with Tommy then. But it had seemed like a farfetched fantasy. He had told Buck he was queer after Buck had already moved in with Tommy. He’d admitted it to himself, to Frank, before that, but hadn’t told anyone else for weeks. In hindsight, sometimes he figures he’d left it too late, but most of the time he didn’t think it would have made a difference at all. But now, with what Tommy has told him, maybe it would have. It’s a knife sliding between Eddie’s ribs to think maybe. Maybe.
“But I didn’t.” Tommy looks resigned, shoulders drooping.
“Why are you telling me this?” Eddie needs to know. It seems like Tommy has known for years that Eddie has loved Buck. Loves Buck. I knew there were going to be three people in this relationship. So why is he only bringing it up now?
“Because I didn’t. Because I can’t. I can’t break up with him. But I want to move forward. And I want to do so with him, for us to further our life together. But if I ask him to marry me when he doesn’t know for sure that you’re not an option, he’ll say no.”
Fear freezes Eddie’s insides. “So, what– what are you asking me to do?” Because Tommy is asking something of Eddie, wants something. Something Eddie fears he will have to make himself give.
Tommy straightens up, shoulders rolling back. He’s serious, solemn but not demanding or pleading when he says it. A devastating request. “I’m asking you, as my friend, to let him go.”
Eddie could be sick, he thinks, could vomit up the three and a quarter beers and the half a dozen chicken wings he’s consumed since he got to Tommy and Buck’s place. Could spill the mess of his insides up all over himself, all over Tommy, all over their lives. Tommy is his friend, was his friend before he was ever Buck’s boyfriend. Eddie should do this thing for him. Should give Buck his blessing to marry Tommy, give Buck up, give him over, completely, to this man who has loved him so well for the past three years. Eddie should; in his gut he knows it would be the right thing to do. But his heart– his heart is in revolt. It’s Buck. He loves him. How can he ever let him go?
Tommy leans forward, places a hand on Eddie’s leg, squeezes his fingers around the ball of his kneecap, until Eddie lifts his gaze and meets his eyes. “Or,” he says, somehow even more serious, “I am telling you, as your friend, to go and get him.”

I love reading through them.
You knew Bradley never wanted to be a father, which was just fine with you because you knew you couldn't have kids. You had known about your fertility problems for a long time and had long ago come to peace with it.
Y'all had several conversations about children when you first started dating. Once you both felt like your feelings on the matter were hashed out, you had never really felt like revisiting the topic. Your life wasn't less or empty without kids. You were perfectly content with the life you and Rooster had made together.
That's why you have no idea what to do with the situation you are in right now. You were at your gynecologist for your annual check-up. Taking a pregnancy test was standard procedure, something you didn't even bat your eyes about or worry over. What you weren't prepared for was the positive results back.
"I'm sorry?" You choked out in disbelief. "That can't be possible."
"I know this is probably surprising, but," your doctor starts to say before you cut them off.
"No. No, I have known since I was 17 that I can't get pregnant."
"Well, you are and can. Sometimes miracles like this can happen," your doctor responded kindly.
She went on to ramble more and talk about some next steps and options. You felt shocked, not entirely sure how to process the information she was throwing your way. You left the office a bit later, promising to set up a follow-up appointment.
Your first thought was to get an abortion. It was the obvious solution. Bradley didn't want kids, and you hadn't wanted them either. Right? You tried to think if it was true. Was it that you didn't want kids or just that you couldn't have kids?
For the next week, you tried to run the pros and cons and sort out your feelings on what was happening. You tried to act as normal as possible with Bradley. You didn't want to bring anything up until you knew how you felt.
Part of you kept coming back to when you were a little girl to how growing up before you knew that you couldn't have kids, the promise you would whisper to yourself. The promise of how you would do better than your own parents did.
You thought of the fantasies you used to have: the baby shoes, baking in the kitchen guiding a tiny pair of hands, sports practices, matching sweaters for family holiday cards, first recitals, proms and homecomings, dropping them off for their first day of college, and parent's weekends where you buy cheap booze, family trips, the possibilities of grandkids.
Now suddenly, all those fantasies were a possibility again. A reality that could come true in less than a year. Thinking about them brought an ache to your chest. An ache that manifested as want, a desire so strong all the cons you could come up with didn't really matter, well, all of them but one.
The biggest problem of the puzzle was Bradley, the love of your life. You had absolutely no doubt that he would do the right thing and stay by your side. However, you didn't want him to be a dad because he had to do it. The thought of him being forced to do something he didn't want to, just because it's the right thing, made your stomach roll. The idea of part of him resenting you, and eventually your child too, because of something you chose. That was something you couldn't live with.
So even though you felt a heavy hurt in your chest, you knew you had to leave Bradley. You weighed that heartbreak compared to the want for this child that had bloomed in your chest, and one outweighed the other. So now, on top of thinking about the baby, you started to think through quiet plans of how it would hurt your husband least to leave him.
You almost broke down one night and told him the two of you had been lying on the couch together. Bradley was casually spooning you from behind, one of his hands playing with a lock of hair while the movie he picked played on the TV. Of course, it was the Princess Bride, one of his all-time favorites.
You were half watching the movie, half dozing. Bradley was too good at soothing you, and you had started noticing a significant change in your energy levels as of late. You mentally made a note to bring it up at the follow-up doctor's appointment you had scheduled.
"I would do that," Bradley suddenly says, bringing you back to alertness.
"Oh really?" you hum, unsure what he was talking about.
"Yes, I would wait five years and chase after kidnappers, fight the prince, build a tolerance to poison, all for you, baby."
Bradley's honest love for you warmed your chest like it always did. However, the current circumstances turned that warmth into a bitter aftertaste in the back of your throat. What you were doing haunted you. His hand drops your hair and traces down your arm until he threads your fingers together. His large hand in yours helped further break down your resolve.
"What if I asked you to do something you didn't want to?" You ask him hesitantly.
"If you wanted me to, then I would," Brad tells you plainly. As if that were a given, you should just expect that his desires would line up with yours. It doesn't put you at ease like you were hoping it would.
"What if it was something you really didn't want to. Something bigger than sword fights and rodents of unusual size?"
His hand flexes squeezing yours a little tighter. Bradley doesn't say anything for a moment, and you wait with bated breath. Finally, he nuzzles your neck with his nose before asking, "Do you have something specific in mind?"
That was the moment, the moment that you could come clean to him. You could be honest and lay it all out on the table, but you don't. You can't. You aren't ready to let him go yet; it's too soon, you tell yourself.
So you lie to him, finally pushing the words out your throat, "No, nothing specific. Just asking."
Bradley's fingers that are laced with yours squeeze yours again, and you have the sneaking suspicion that he doesn't believe your lie. "Well, even if it was big. We would do what we always do. We'll talk about it and figure it out. Then I'll agree with what you want, just like I always do."
"You shouldn't do things you don't want to do just for me, Brad," you chastise him lightly. The heavy pit in your chest constricts even more.
He kisses your head, pulling you a little tighter against him in his embrace. "Sure, whatever you say, babe."
The whole thing sits with you for another week, and the doctor's appointment you made starts to creep closer. You are reading an article in incognito mode on your phone about nutrition during pregnancy and the importance of vitamins. Occasionally, you glance up to see Bradley sitting on the other side of the couch.
He has a thick World War Two biography book wide open, nearing the end. His reading glasses are perched on the edge of his nose. Even though you had teased Brad relentlessly when he first got them, the glasses were actually really hot. The sight of them on him now makes heat start to bud in the bottom of your abdomen.
You lock your phone and set it aside, looking more thoroughly at Bradley now. He was so so very handsome. You found it unlikely there would ever be another man you would allow into your bed after him. The edges of panic that seep into you every time you consider the inevitable end with Bradley makes a reappearance. You push it to the side as much as possible, but it creates a sudden desperation for him in you.
"Bradley."
"Yes, my love?" He asks, not looking up from the page in front of him.
"I need something."
"What do you need?" He turns the page of his book and pushes those damn glasses higher up the bridge of his nose.
"I need you," you tell him, biting your lip.
His eyes snap up from the page to look at you, and his eyebrows raise, processing your words. "What was that?"
"I need you to make love to me, Brad. I'm on fire."
He dog ears the page he is on his book and sets it on the coffee table, turning to give you his full attention. His hands casually trace up your leg, massaging the tense muscles of your claves.
You let out a soft sigh at the feeling. A few moments later, Bradley crawls up your body, pressing soft kisses to your neck and then melding his lips to yours. You sigh into his mouth, enjoying the taste of him, trying to savor it. You pull off his reading glasses so they aren't in the way, haphazardly tossing them away.
When he starts to pull away, you wrap your arms around him, drawing him closer, not wanting any space between you. You trace one of your hands down his neck and under the collar of his shirt, tracing his shoulders, kissing him harder, slipping your tongue into his mouth.
"What has got you so needy, sweet girl?" He asks you, confused, pressing a few soft sweet kisses to your throat.
"Just you, handsome man," you tell him, trying to draw Bradley back to your lips. Bradley smiles, hearing your words but then shifts off you and the couch.
Before you can protest at his absence, he goes to pick you up. Like every time Bradley picks you up, you are hit with the worry that it will be the time he can't do it, or he will drop you, make heaving grunting sounds, or some other terrible mishap will come to pass. It doesn't, though; he secures you in his arms and starts to carry you through the house to your room.
You start pressing kisses to the readily presented column of his neck then. When he reaches your bed and goes to put you down, you sink your teeth into the space where his neck starts to curve into his shoulder. Although he lets out a hiss, you hadn't held back with the bite. You made it intending to mark him.
When he does set you down, you scramble hurriedly to start undressing him, desperate to see and feel the expanses of his golden skin. Unfortunately, you only get Brad out of his teeshirt before he stops you. His large hands close around your wrists, holding them tight, preventing them from moving further down, lower than the top of his abdomen.
"Slow down, pretty girl. We got all the time in the world," he says. You know, he said it to be soothing, but he didn't know how wrong he was. He didn't understand the finite amount of time you had left together.
So when he lets go of your wrist, you instead start to pull off your own clothes and settle yourself on the bed. You stare at him expectantly and let out the smallest huff.
"Slow down." He tells you again, "And, don't move your hands off the headboard," When he is satisfied with how you are holding it, he starts to kiss down your body.
"Why are you so worried?" he breaths out against your inner thigh, pressing feather-light kisses to the skin there. "You know I'm going to take care of you, my love. I always do. There's no reason to be so worried."
Bradley's words manage to hit the exact spot of comfort you are actually needing. Even though you are planning on leaving him. You still want him to take care of you; you want to do this with him. But, you also know that can't happen. So, regardless you feel more at ease; the desperation in you is not quite so hot, not making you jittery with need.
Bradley rewards the way your body relaxes by licking stripe over you. You resist the urge to let go of the headboard and bury your hands in Bradley's thick hair. The way he sucks your clit into his mouth to roll his tongue over makes you arch, needing more. Bradley lays his arm across your hips, applying pressure to keep you still under him.
The more you work to struggle against his arm, feeling your high edge closer and closer, a thought suddenly pops into your head. Is it still okay for Bradley to hold you down like this? Are you going to hurt your baby? It's an irrational thought, you know that, but your body instantly reacts to it. Of course, so early into your pregnancy, there is no reason this would be a problem, but you still drop your hips down onto the bed, no longer trying to move them against him. Your distraction pulled you far back from the edge.
You try to focus on the feel of Bradley's tongue and how warm he feels with his shoulders caged between your thighs. But only a few breaths later, Bradley is lifting his head to look at you.
He has a crease between his eyebrows, and his tongue that was just around you darts out to lick to own lips. "What just stopped you from coming?" he asks, concerned. His voice is thick and low. His hold over your waist disappears as he draws soothing circles on your hip. Bradley's concern draws you back to him and into the want you have for him.
You let go of the headboard and stretch out your arms. Then, burying your hands in his hair, you tilt Brad's face to fully meet your eyes.
"Make love to me, Bradley," you beg him. He stares at you for a very long minute, and you stare back at him, waiting. Finally, he pulls his eyes away from yours and stares at your center in front of him.
"As you wish," he mutters the words. Rooster pulls himself off the bed and pulls his sweats off. You drag your eyes over his naked body, taking him all in. You lick your lips at the sight.
"You are breathtaking, Brad," you tell him. That smile that melts your heart shows up on his face, and he glows under your praise.
You crawl to the edge of the bed and trace your hands up his muscular thighs. You guide your hand upwards. You brush over his cock, not really giving it any attention, before outlining his side, watching his stomach and abs contract under your fingers. You go slowly, trying to memorize the feel of his skin under you. You kiss along his chest too.
He leans down and captures your lips. You kiss Rooster back, glad that the fervor has left your body, but you are no less desperate for him. The desire to memorize him doesn't go.
You urge him onto the bed, pushing him on his back. You straddle Bradley, settling over him, with his cock nestled in between your lower lips. You give a small rock, his head bumping into your clit. You moan a little and repeat the motion.
Leaning forward, you rest your hands on his chest to give you more leverage. Rooster moves his hips with you increasing the friction. The pace is slow and almost teasing for both of you.
Shifting your weight, you lean and kiss him again. Bradley's tongue slips into your mouth, running against yours. One of his hands comes up and rests on your hip, urging you, pulling you further down to rub against him harder. His other hand cups one of your breasts, his thumb running over your nipple in swirling strokes.
You break his embrace just to reach your hand and guide him inside. Bradley lets out a heavy sigh as he slips into you. You resist the urge to slide all the way down his length, keeping it slow.
"Fuck, you feel so good," he tells you, biting his lips.
"Love how you fill me, Brad," you sigh once he is fully hilted. Both of you are breathing more elevated. When you start to move your hips again, Bradley closes his eyes and presses his head back into the bed.
You immediately stop moving, glaring down at him. "No," you say, and his eyes open instantly, looking at you again. You reach up a hand to grip his chin affectionately, holding his face in place. "I need to see you."
"You are so beautiful," he tells you. Bradley does as you want and doesn't break eye contact again.
The room is filled with both of your moanings as you work together at a slow, steady pace. The way his hands run along your skin and back is almost reverent. The heat in you starts to build again. You grind down hard onto Bradley so that your clit gets more stimulation.
Rooster's right hand comes around and settles on your lower stomach, applying pressure and letting his thumb dip down to brush your clit in light strokes. You gasp, a moan breaking from your throat. You freeze on top of Bradley's cock, enjoying the zing his thumb just sent up your spine.
"That's right. So good." Bradley moans out, pressing his thumb harder into you. Even though he is filling you so deliciously, you don't feel close enough to him. You feel like you want to crawl into his skin. That would be the only thing that would satisfy your need for him.
You grab his hand that isn't on your clit and thread your fingers together. His hand grips yours back. Bradley doesn't make any movement to shift either of your hips, content to play with your clit and stare into your eyes.
"Fuck, I love you." Bradley groans out, biting his lower lip. You start to rock your hips into his again, but for the most part, keeping him fully hilted inside you. You almost feel like you are drowning in his eyes with how he looks up at you. His heavy-lidded gaze makes you clench around him.
Your moans and quiet pants mix with his. The tension in you grows as you swirl your hips into his.
"Need this, need you." Bradley swirls his thumb a little harder and does break eye contact to nip your neck, sitting more up on the bed to get a better angle. Having more of your skin pressed together helps ease more of the ache in you.
You grip his hair again, pulling him up, shifting, so you are chest to chest. Bradley's free hand clutches you close to him. You trace the scars on his cheek with your lips before kissing him again.
"I love you," you sigh against his mouth. He groans and rocks his hips into yours, creating a bit more friction. Rooster understands just what you need, not pulling out of you.
The two of you build a rhythm together; finally, you can't hold back anymore. The bubble in you bursts, and you clench hard around Bradey's cock. Bradley takes a few more gasping breaths and then cums in you with a low moan. Bradley starts to move like he is going to pull out of you, so you whine and hold him closer.
"No, no. I need you closer," you tell him. You are still desperate to have him near. You press your nose into Rooster's neck, breathing in his natural musky scent. Trying to absorb the smell entirely, memorizing it before biting the skin and tasting it.
"Woah. Woah," Bradley says breathily. You let out a low hum in response, trying to savor his sounds as well. You wiggle your hips against him again, where he is still half hard. You consciously clench around his dick, reminding yourself how full Bradley makes you.
"Baby, stop," he says. Rooster's voice is wrecked, and his large hands hold your hips still. At first, you don't even hear his request until he repeats it more forcefully. Then he rolls you over onto your back and pulls out of you quickly. You gasp at the sudden loss of him. You have to lay there for a moment, trying to reorient yourself. Bradley is sitting on the edge of the bed, panting hard, his hands on his knees.
"Bradley?" You croak out, reaching a hand hesitantly towards him. He looks back at you, and his face is a mix of panicked and furious.
"What the fuck was that?" He asks you in a low growl.
"What was what?"
"Don't bullshit me."
"I have no idea what you are talking about," you tell him, drawing your eyebrows close together.
"That was was goodbye sex," he says slowly. Your mouth drops open, and you try to reach around your rattling brain to come up with an answer, an excuse. However, you find it completely empty.
"That was the exact kind of sex we have before I leave and deploy. You had the same look." Bradley was almost shaking, and you had no idea what to say that wouldn't be a lie.
"What's going on? Something has been wrong for weeks. I keep waiting for you to talk to me, and you fucking haven't."
"I —" you start to say, but Bradley's eyes are so captivating, so genuine, you can't lie to him. So before you even know what you are saying, the words fall out of your mouth, "I'm leaving."
Rooster physically recoils at your words. The line of his back is taut, and his eyebrows draw together. His mouth presses into a tight line. His jaw flexing, and you can tell he is clenching his teeth. "What did I do wrong?"
"No, sweetie," you say quickly. "It's not you. It's me." You tell him gently. It was you, well, you and this baby, but Brad didn't need to know that. Your words only seemed to make him more upset.
"Are you kidding me? You didn't just say that." He mutters it under his breath, pulling at his short curls in frustration and glaring at you. He is so tense the veins in his bicep and neck start to pop.
"I'm sorry," you offer him quietly.
"I don't want to hear sorry. I want to hear a reason. Were you going to tell me? Or just planning to disappear?"
"Of course, I was going to tell you."
"When?"
"Soon."
"Why? "
"I can't..."
"No. I think I deserve to know why the love of my life is leaving me," Bradley says, frustrated. He stands up from bed, goes to his drawers, and pulls on some boxers to throw on. He also grabs one of his old Sigma Pi shirts out of his drawer and throws it for you to shrug on.
You felt shame and frustration building in you. You didn't want to deal with this situation right now. You didn't want to have to tell Bradley why. Then to your absolute horror, and probably the hormones coursing through you, you burst into tears.
Bradley's pacing halts for a moment at the sight of your tears, but then he resumes momentarily as he balls his fist tight. His knuckles turning a paler shade.
"We want different things." You gasp out between the sobs racking your body.
"We want different things," he repeats slowly, like he is trying to piece out some hidden meaning in the words.
"Yes," you hiccup nodding your head.
"How could that be possible?" He questions you sharply. "If that were the case, we wouldn't have gotten married. And you didn't mention anything when we had our last relationship check-in."
Bradley was big on communication. He insisted y'all have seasonal relationship check-ins with each other to talk about anything that had happened and how you were feeling about your relationship. This conversation should have probably been reserved for the next one, but you couldn't wait a few more weeks before leaving, or Bradley would know.
You were going to start showing at some point; while all the articles you read were inconsistent about when that might happen, it would happen eventually. You knew it would probably be impossible to leave Rooster if he knew that you were pregnant. Every moment with him weakened your resolve to do the right thing.
"Things change, people change." You weakly tell him. Not able to conceive a better excuse.
"I don't understand why you are jumping into leaving me. Baby, why won't you talk to me?" Bradley suddenly dropped hard to his knees on the wood floor at the side of the bed. You winced at the sound it made. He pulls one of your hands into both of his. "Please talk to me," he begs you, holding your hand delicately in his. The puppy dog look Bradley has mastered coming out in full force.
"I can't…"
"You can," he reassures you, swiping a thumb across your pulse point. You felt your stomach roll, the emotions in you going haywire.
"I'm…" you trail off and then shake your head at him in denial of this situation. As soon as you tell Bradley, it will be over.
"It's okay, baby. Anything. You can tell me anything. Talk to me. I won't be mad," he adds on for your benefit. Your plans all crumbled at that moment because how can you deny Bradley Bradshaw anything when he begs for it.
"I'm pregnant," you finally whisper in a barely audible voice. With how Bradley reacted to your words, you might as well have screamed them. First, he flinches like a whole body flinch. Every muscle you can see tensing. He shutters and his grip on your hand tightens to where it is almost painful.
Bradley freezes like that for a moment, blinking at you owlishly, before he drops his head down, hiding his face from your view. Finally, he presses his face down into the bed.
You wait with bated breath. Rooster's grip on your hand didn't lessen in the slightest. You feel panic settle in the back of your throat when his shoulders start to tremble, and he still hasn't said anything.
"Bradley?" You flex your hand, resisting his tight grip, and he releases you. His hands fall limply on the bed. He still hasn't looked at you, though.
Tears start to streak down your face faster, and a small sob hitches in your throat. "I am sorry," you tell him sincerely.
"Are you really?" His low voice asks muffled.
"Sorry, or pregnant?" You ask pulling up the collar of his shirt you are wearing to wipe away some of your tears. "Because it's both."
His hands come to clasp themselves together, and you briefly wonder if he is praying. The shaking of his shoulders and the inability to see his face make it increasingly impossible to understand his reaction.
Finally, he looks at you, and those hazel eyes bleed back at you, tears still falling down his face staining his cheeks a bright red even through the healthy tan he has right now. Bradley's eyes trace over your face looking like he is searching for any trace of a lie. Then he examines your body under his shirt like he might already see a difference.
As if there was a difference, he would be able to notice now that he didn't notice before when you were naked, and he was inside of you. You wrap your arms around your chest, hugging yourself under his scrutiny.
"I'm going to keep it." You finally tell him now that Bradley's shining eyes are available for scrutiny again. His tongue darts out to wet his lips, and his face falls into a frown. "I'm sorry," you say again.
You try to think of the right words to explain yourself to him. "When I found out, I realized I wanted this. I know we always said we didn't. But I really want this baby, Bradley. I am sorry I kept it from you. I just didn't know how to tell you. And then I saw these baby shoes in the store. They were so cute." Your fingers knot into the edge of the worn frat shirt you are wearing. His hazel eyes aren't giving you much to go off of. They are still darting around your face like he is trying to figure out what you are telling him.
Brad abruptly stands up in the middle of your rambling. So, you halt your words. Watching him as he walks out of the room. You strain your ears, trying to listen to where he went. You hear the hallway door open and beeps coming from the safe. After hearing it click open and seal again, Bradley's feet can be heard on the hallway floor again.
Your mind runs, trying to think of what he could have grabbed from the safe. Your important documents? You silently make a note that was something that you need to be sure to pack. You wouldn't want to come back to Bradley to get your passport or something after leaving. Could it be money? Was he going to give you money to leave with and give you some of the cash you two had been saving to move?
The thoughts make breathing extra hard, and you start to suck air in and out rapidly. The panic floods your veins, making the walls of the room shrink inward towards you. Sharp tingles prick at your fingertips and toes.
Before you can run through any other possible scenario, he gets back.
You can't focus on Bradley enough to see him through the black that starts to edge in at the corner of your vision. You desperately try to pull a gasping breath in your chest. The action of breathing is suddenly too overwhelming.
The panic of what you had just done finally cutting into you. That Bradley now knew the secrets you had been harboring so close to your chest. There is wringing in your ears, the shuddering wracking your body. You curl into yourself to try and shield yourself from the hurt and panic ringing through your body.
Then, you are engulfed. There isn't enough weight on the outside of you to combat the storm of panic that was trying to burst out from the inside of your veins. Numbness fills your body, and you know you are close to passing out. The storm brewed inside you, desperate to escape your body, desperate to take you out at the same time.
Heaving in breaths gets harder and more difficult. You dig your nails hard into the skin of your thighs, trying to scramble for anything to steady yourself. Fighting each desperate moment when there is s shift.
At first, you don't know what has changed. However, your breaths get a gasp longer, allowing slightly more oxygen, and the black in your vision starts to recede. You slam your eyes shut at the nausea you feel. The more air you can finally take in, the more you are allowed to start making sense of anything besides your own haywire body.
You are wrapped in your weighted blanket, and the extra pressure is aided by Bradley. He is holding you tight within his arms and legs, and he has you pulled close to his chest.
His legs are wrapped around your hips and crossed in front of you. Giving the front of your body room. Your legs are trapped between you two. One of his arms is crossed over your chest, and the other is petting your head soothingly, playing with your hair occasionally.
Bradley is humming to you. You try and focus on the tune. It's like a lifeline; you cling to the sound, letting it help your thoughts trail away from your panic. You keep trying to breathe bigger, longer breaths consciously now.
It's a tune you have heard before. Finally, Bradley breaks from the humming, whispering one of the lyrics into your ear, and you can immediately place the song.
"Love of my life," he mutters lowly into your ear, and then he returns to his humming. You are flashed back to a different time he sang this song to you.
He had been perched on the bench of a piano. Fingers gliding over the keys in time, his sweet voice dipping between octaves. It was Love Of My Life, by Queen. It is the song Bradley sings to you before every single deployment.
The song feels like a confirmation that you two will not be making it. A confirmation he is letting you go. This is the song that always fills the space between you when parting ways. The small semblance of recovery you had made is gone. Your breaths start to quicken again as you are dragged back into the panic.
Bradley's arms flex hard, and there is slightly more pressure around you. The beads of the weighted blanket shifting under his hands. He continues humming the song, but this time he peppers in a few more of the lyrics.
"Love of my life, don't leave me," he croons softly into your ear.
You don't know how long Bradley holds you waiting for you to calm down. You don't ever feel at ease, but the slow breaths and Bradley's soothing voice help bring you down from the high and worst of the panic attack.
You manage to let out a little whimper, and Bradley's arms start to loosen around you in slow intervals. You turn your face to the side, slotting your eyes up to catch a glimpse of him. Bradley has his eyes closed, and his face is splotchy and red from crying still. You fill in some of the lyrics to his humming in a cracked, barely there voice. Those beautiful eyes flash open, hearing your voice join his humming.
He won't stop humming, though. Rooster's hazel eyes are so intense, a medusas snare, that even as hard as you try to close your eyes, you aren't successful. They have captivated you entirely. Bradley finishes humming the song and lets his arms slip from around you. His legs uncross, and they fall flat on the bed on either side of you.
You push the weighted blanket off your top, so it is pilled around your legs as you ease out of your curled position.
"BradBrad," you whisper for him. You are still trembling at the very tips of your fingers. The buzz and tingles at the front of your nose are still persistent, but feeling has returned to the rest of your body. The needles fade out of your hands and legs.
"Love of my life," he hums sweetly again. His eyes have a tiny bit of worry, but for the most part, they are full of love and adoration for you. His body is borderline hot to the touch and feverish behind you. His heart is thumping loudly under your ear.
Brad's now loose hands find new purchase, gliding over your hips, tracing slow, steady circles. Then his left hand starts creeping forward further. Bradley's large hand is suddenly under his shirt and splaying out flat against your lower belly. That is where it finds its perch.
You gasp at the feeling of his hand, at the placement of it. Brad's fingers make the tiniest indents pressing into your skin. Your breath hitches at his squeeze. The metal of his wedding ring is warm against your skin, a nice contrast to the rest of his hand.
Hearing the way your breath hitches, Bradley immediately lays his hand fully flat. Bradley now retreating to a feather-light touch. His fingers swirl in an unknown pattern on your skin. His hands like to trace the shapes of flight paths he has memorized.
It was something Bradley had confessed to you one night during pillow talk. The two of you sprawled together. You were laying half on his chest. His fingertips were tracing the length of your spine, in feather-light trials, moving from the base of your spine to the small of your back, then following the path again. His fingers would sometimes brush into your hair and give small scratches before tracing your flesh again.
"How do you do that?" You finally had asked him.
"Do what?" He responded, but something about the glint in his eye told you he knew exactly what you were referring to. Rooster just wanted you to admit it out loud.
"You are so consistent, but you keep me on my toes." Bradley's hand stills where it had been gliding on your back. Then he started to trace once more, but this time his fingers making small movements and taking on a new drag like pattern dancing across your back.
"Is that right?" He asked you, but there was a full-blown boyish smirk donning his face.
You nodded your head, licking your lips. The tingles that his hands were sending through your body started to warm you up even after just having finished with him. "Yes, it rocks my world. So, why don't you let me on the secret?"
"I'm just that good, baby," he told you cheekily.
"Bradley Bradshaw." You warned lowly.
"It's flight paths."
"What?"
"I use the flight paths I have memorized," his fingers danced in a looping motion doubling back and then tracing forward again.
"They make it easy to loop, but it's long enough that there is different pacing, or I use the piano," He told you, letting his fingers tap and shift along your back as if it was a set of ivories suddenly. It had made you giggle.
"That might have been one of the sexiest things you have ever told me, Bradley." You had told him before you kissed him silly. And letting him showcase those skills with his tongue for the second time that night.
Now, Brad's hand that is lying against your stomach also starts to follow a pattern. You open your mouth, but Bradley quickly cuts you off.
"Please, don't say sorry."
"But I am."
"That was a bad attack."
It was true that you hadn't had one that severe in a while. "I'm—"
"Do not say sorry," he repeats. You sigh heavily and move to stop leaning against Bradley. However, he doesn't let you. The hand on your hip and lower abdomen fighting you and drawing you flush against him. He settles you, so you are comfortably leaning against his chest again.
"I am sorry," Brad finally says, almost a whisper in your ear.
"You are sorry?"
"Yes."
"Why?" You question him. Not sure you understand what he is apologizing for.
"Why are you going to leave me?" Brad asks instead of answering your question.
You sigh and close your eyes. You lean your head back, so it's settled on Bradley's shoulder. Then take a deep calming breath before responding. "I know you don't want kids. You have always been very honest about that, and it's not your fault I'm pregnant.
"Well, I don't think you went and got pregnant by yourself. It's kind of a process that takes two contributing parties. Unless you are going to tell me that it's someone else's." Bradley says the words so incredulously that you know he has no doubt the baby is his.
"I know you don't want this, but I realized I do."
"What if I do want this?"
"I'm not going to let you do this just because you feel obligated, Bradley," you tell him tiredly.
"No. I want this."
"How could that be?" You ask.
You feel him shift behind you, and you open your eyes to see what he is doing. Bradley is reaching to the bedside table where you see a huge binder sitting.
It is a binder that you know well. Bradley is a meticulous and organized person. He likes to refer to this binder as your Life Plan Binder. It was full of timelines, dates, references, and lists. Everything Bradley feels is necessary for y'all's life.
You realize that this one is different from the one that lives on his desk. It is slimmer, and the front doesn't have a picture of the two of you slotted in the cover that the other did.
"The LPB?" You ask him, confused.
His left hand makes itself at home again on your lower abdomen, while his right hand puts the binder on your lap. Finally, you read the cover where it says alternative plans in bold lettering.
"I'm sorry I left earlier, but I needed to get this." He mutters into your ear. Brad's tone is deeply apologetic. He flips the binder open, and there are labeled tabs. You fully realize this is a binder you have never seen before. You scan the tabs and freeze up in Bradley's hold when you see the one he is thumbing to.
It is towards the back, behind the different tabs, including restations, health, new cars, vacations, and retirement, is a tab that has a simple label. It's blue and just says, baby. Bradley flips to the tab, and you see the cover page of the section with the table of contents. In bold at the top of the page, you read Baby Bradshaw.
A sob that ends up coming out as a broken laugh ripping from your chest. The section contents was filled out with thoroughly thought out plans on you having children, from a section with important timelines, appointments to schedule, college savings plans, and a section with boys' and girls' names that he likes.
You bring one of your hands up to stifle the sobs that are bubbling in your chest. You hold your hand close over your mouth to try to hold back the sound. His fingers traced over the page and the table of contents for the section.
"What is this?" You finally ask him.
"It's my alternate life plan binder. For you know, if other things come up."
"Why do you have a Baby Bradshaw section?" You hesitantly ask. His hand is still warm against your stomach, and he flexes his fingers.
"Well, a while ago, I started thinking about kids," he trails off, and you start looking through the table of contents again. You see that the most robust and largest section is actually related to adoption. You feel your heart melt in your chest. A new bright feeling of hope blossoms looking at the care, time, and thought he has put into this. As he continues, "and well… You know how I am. I wanted to be prepared for that possibility."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"I've been ruminating, and I don't know. Maybe I would have mentioned it at our next check-in. But I knew you don't…" Bradley doesn't finish his sentence, and you lose your mind a little bit.
You pull the large binger up into your hands and shift. You struggle and move until you turn in his grip. Your legs wrapped around Brad's waist. You want to see his face, which is easier in this position. The hand that had been placed on your stomach curls around your back and waist, steadying you against him.
"You changed your mind?" You ask him. You let your hands trace over his chest, settling on cupping his face. Then, staring into his eyes, you look for any trace of anger or deceit.
"You seem to also have changed your mind, baby," he takes the binder from where it was awkwardly pressed in between you two. It allows you to settle closer to him. Bradley sets the binder to the side, momentarily breaking eye contact to make sure none of the pages are creased. Your chests were almost flush together. You wrap your arms around his neck, and then he is the one to hold your face. His eyes reconnect with yours, and you once again feel like you are caught in them.
The intensity and openness in his gaze make your lips move faster than your brain to lay out the whole truth for him. "I don't think that I ever wanted to not have kids. I had just accepted it because I knew that I couldn't." You explain, not breaking eye contact. Bradley's thumb traces a slow circle against your cheek.
"I would never let you do this by yourself."
"I can't just throw a wrench like this in your life, Brad."
He immediately starts shaking his head in protest. "It's our life. I'm not going to lie to you and say that you didn't hurt my feelings. If you left me," Bradly heaves a heavy shaky breath. You briefly wonder if he is going to cry again. Then he continues to explain, "I would be broken… shattered. I feel even worse that you didn't want to talk to me or tell me."
You can tell how deeply you hurt him. Even though you knew what you were going to do was wrong, now that you and Bradley are talking about it. You know you need to try and explain your rationale no matter how messed up it was.
"At first, I wasn't sure how I felt. I wanted to talk to you, but I couldn't do that before I knew how I felt. But then I kept thinking about all the times we talked about you not wanting kids. How you had so many good, valid reasons for feeling that way. I know you, Bradley. I knew that you would do the right thing as soon as I told you. But you don't need obligation ruling anymore of your life that it already does."
"So what if I was obligated? I agreed to be obligated to you for the rest of our lives when we got married. I want to be bound to you. I want to shoulder your burdens, just like you shoulder mine," Bradley says.
"A child is a lifelong burden for you to shoulder," you say. You need to know, need to be fully sure Brad understands.
"Do you think so low of me? Do you think I wouldn't love something that was a mix of you and me?"
"There are plenty of people in the world who don't love their children." You tell him, swallowing hard.
He lets out a long sigh, his breath fanning a bit over your face. "I want this baby. I want this baby with you. I want to be at every doctor's appointment. I want to know everything I've missed. I want family vacations where I can buy a Hawaiian shirt in three different sizes for all of us. I want little league games. I want a baby to sing to sleep. I want someone to put on top of the piano and sing to like my dad did. I want us to paint a nursery. I want Disney trips. I want to fight about curfew. I want to make breakfast on Saturdays and spend Sundays in the shop with football, restoring a beat-up first car. I want to make dad jokes. Fuck, I need to buy a pair of new balances."
Warmth fills you at his words. You let out a small laugh picturing Bradley as a stereotypical dad. How he wants all of that with you. That you won't do this alone like you have mentally been preparing yourself for since finding out. You run your fingers up and down his neck trailing it down his shoulder as far as you can reach before tracing back to his neck. A content sigh falls from his lips, and his eyes close, enjoying your gentle caresses.
"What are some of the names?" You break the silence after his confessions.
"I like Westley," he says with a small boyish smile. You bite back a grin at the name, playfully rolling your eyes.
"Oh, and is Buttercup on your list for girl names?" You ask him teasingly.
"Maybe," he says. You lean forward and peck his lips.
"You're not going to leave me," Bradley whispers with conviction. You know he is still coming down from the emotional roller coaster you just went through together. You also know Brad is going to need time to fully process this conversation and the change about to happen in your lives. However, you also know, without a doubt, that Bradley will be holding your hand at your next doctor's appointment.
"No, I'm not." You confirm and brush your lips over his softly.
"Stay with me forever," Bradley begs you in a voice a little too small for you to handle.
You hold the hazel gaze for a very, very long moment. You let him examine you, see the truth, and honestly bleeding in your gaze before you respond. What you want to say at first is: I love you. However, those words weren't quite right; they didn't seem to fully capture your intention and the emotion in your chest you felt for this man. So instead, you settle on the words you think will most closely allow him to understand. You brush your lips against him again, whispering your answer into them.
 "As you wish, Bradley."

Heyyyyy I just came up with this but headcanons with the boys if their so is in college and has a bunch of missing work how and how they would deal with it (not like this is related to me rn totally DONT have have 20+ missing assignments that r do Thursday😮‍💨) if not that’s fine I just needing something to do so I felt like I was being productive cuz I don’t feel like doing work in my week off. Thought I’d submit ideas for writers so I’d be doing smt!
AEW STARS React to: Their S/O In College (and Taking Finals)
Pairings: Nick Wayne x Reader, Darius Martin x Reader, Hook x Reader, Dante Martin x Reader, Christian Cage x Reader, MJF x Reader, Eddie Kingston x Reader, Wheeler Yuta x Reader
Word Count: 1.2K

Taglist: @hooks-martin @sheinthatfandom @triscillal @cassie0sstuff @eddie-kingstons-wifey @hookerforhook @batzy-watzy @wwenhlimagines
i totally forgot to add my beautiful besties my bad
Nick Wayne
Hahaha He is the last person you should be going to for help
If anything, Nick believes that you should just leave it alone and just be in candy land with him
But he knows how hard it is for you and how important it is
So he’ll try his best to help you actually do the assignments
Like you two split up how much work you have and he does half the assignment
I think he would find it fun; pulling all nighters in the library and doing work with their S/O until like 4 am
Every night would be a new adventure
Would let you review the work before you submit it
But anything science-related
Don’t ask him shit
I see him as more of a math person
Darius Martin
I see Darius definitely as a liberal arts or literature person
Like he can edit your papers (he’s your personal chat gpt)
I think Darius would help you by creating a schedule
Like when you need to get stuff done by
BUT
He takes it a step further by allocating time limits for each assignment
Like you can only work on assignment 1 for an hour and 30 minutes each day
Something tells me he is particular with schedules
Darius will keep you on track as if he’s getting paid for it
“Y/N, your break ended 3 minutes ago. LETS GO”
Will definitely help you with researching topics cause that takes a while
Don’t ask him shit about math
Dante Martin
Doesn’t particularly understand what you are going through
But nonetheless he hates that he doesn’t see you as much anymore
I can see him just giving you gifts and words of encouragement
Will tutor you if you need help…but realize that this is not high school science
“You mean there is more than Chemistry I? CHEMISTRY VI? ORGANIC-“
He soon gives up
Stays up with you and drags you away from work if needed
IMAGINE DANTE SAYING “COME TO BED BABY” OMG MY HEART
Will help you with assignments like Nick
Will reward you for all your hard work (wink wink)
Tries to distract you and give you moments for fun/relaxation
After the dust is settled, he’s just happy that you are out of the shackles of academia and you two can hang out stress-free
Hook
MANS IS NOT BOTHERED WITH YOUR BULLSHIT
Has the constant “I told you to start on these assignments earlier” look on his face
If anything he will just supply you with food, energy drinks, and emotional support
But if you thing this man will give you any type of physical help
YOU ARE LYIN TO YOURSELF SWEETHEART
Will secretly complain about your lack of self care or wishing he could actually help in Italian
Fancanon: Hook can speak Italian
If he thinks you have been working too much
He will save your work and shut your laptop down
Will make sure you did everything on your checklist before turning the assignments in
If you need him to print stuff off, just ask, he’ll do it
Unless it’s 1 am…then he’s telling you to take your ass to sleep
Wheeler Yuta
Okay, this man can actually help you
WITH HIS CUTE ASS GLASSES
He truly understands what you are going through as he used to be in your shoes
Mans will tutor you until you are smarter than him
Loves helping you with history and shit
“No the War of 1812 didn’t happen in 1937”
Gives you helpful study and test-taking tips
Tries to make you drink healthy caffeinated drinks not Monsters or Red Bulls
Believes they are the devil and will slap them out of your hands
“What did I say? Red Bull gives you horns, not wings…no not horns for being horny”
Will give you little trinkets or treat you out to dinner when you complete your assignments/exams
He just wants you to remain healthy during this stressful time
Christian Cage
I feel like if anything Christian is a professor…with the way he be schooling those-
He’s probably very knowledge in various subjects
He just does them the old-fashioned way
“What the hell is this?…Whatcha mean this is the new way?”
But if anything he’ll adapt to it, just trying to help you
I HAVE A THEORY that he’ll stay up reading the next chapter or the directions for your next assignment and tries to figure out ways to make the process easier
So the next day you walk out to the table and you see the parts of your project laid out and labeled
“I know it’s a lot but we break it up like this, you should be able to complete by tomorrow”
Christian takes pictures of you two so he can look back and bring up times like the Vietnam war
Makes you take breaks, in which he’ll work in your place
When you get your grade back, it’s yalls grade
not yours
MJF
Straight up pays for a tutor/homework helper
But stays in the room and yells at them cause you are still confused and behind
I mean this in the nicest way
Max is no damn help
He is laughing at you while he’s putting on his scarf
“Imagine doing homework to get a little paper for a job! That’s what you get for not being born rich”
Will post you on instagram and claim that homework and exams are to test idiots
But will quickly change his tune when you place a physics worksheet in front of him
“WHY IS THE GREEK ALPHABET HERE?”
Issues you a public apology and vows to never make fun of you again
If anything MJF supplies you with emotional support, letting you know that your feelings are valid
Will buy you new shoes or something massive for surviving and passing everything
Eddie Kingston
Now when I say don’t ask him anything
DON’T ASK HIM ANYTHING! HE’LL JUST SAY
“Doll, imma be real, I have a GED. I dunno shit”
He can only laugh from afar and say “glad I don’t have to do that shit”
But if you ask him anything about English or Shakespeare, he got you
Will recite random Shakespeare quotes to provide entertainment
I think he proofreads your papers to ensure they make sense
I do think he can help with researching and giving you credible websites
Other than that, his designated role is paper weight or waterboy
He believes your every word when you groan about school
That’s all he can do but you don’t complain about it
After he loves you and you love him

The Bear: Carmen 'Carmy' Berzatto x Fem!Reader: The Date
Part two to Crush & I do not own the Bear characters!!!
Y/N = Your Name
Tumblr media
Your POV
You feel warm and as you notice that Carmy's arms are tightly wrapped around your chest. Someone got awfully comfortable last night not that you mind. Carmy stretches next to you and says, "Morning." You say, "Morning. How was your rest?" He answers, "I feel great and it might be the best I've felt in a while after sleeping. I feel rested for once in my life." You reply, "You should make this a thing. You should take off once a week. You work so hard. You deserve it." He replies, "Maybe so. It could also be our thing." You kiss him on the cheek and reply, "It should. That's cute." He smiles and asks, "What do you have for breakfast?" You answer, "Several options... I mainly have stuff for breakfast burritos or pancakes." He asks, "What do you want? I want to make you food." You reply, "We can have breakfast burritos. I'll show you where stuff is."
You show him stuff in the kitchen then you notice your phone buzzing, so you talk with your mom. She's surprised that a boy is at your place and that he's technically your boss. She also is happy for you because she loves and supports you.
When you get off the phone with your mom, you go to see how Carmy is doing and he has everything organized. It’s like he’s a Chef for a living or something. You lean against the counter and ask, "How's it going?" He answers, "Good. I like how many kitchen gadgets you have." You laugh and say, "Yeah I like fun little things that make cooking easier for me." He says, "I understand that. Who were you talking to?" You answer, "My mom. We talk at least once a week to just catch up about how our week went." He replies, "I heard my name mentioned. I hope you said good things about me." You smile and say, "Of course, I did. My mom was just surprised a guy was staying over at my place and that it was technically my boss. She told me to be safe and to have fun. She supports me." He replies, "I think we'll have fun and be safe. You can tell her I will always keep you safe. Changing topics, but breakfast is ready, but I don't know if you want something to drink or what you have." You reply, "I'll make some coffee."
After enjoying breakfast as you watch TV, Carmy asks, "Can I tell you something?" You answer, "Sure." He replies, "I think you're just really amazing and beautiful and perfect. I am so lucky I get to take you on a date today and I want you to know I'm really happy. Usually, dates make me really anxious, but being around you makes me feel comfortable. You also always make me feel supported and understood whenever I'm around you. Every day, you make me feel loved and we weren’t even dating until now. I appreciate that." You reply, "That's so sweet. Thank you so much. Speaking of our date, what are we going to do today?" He answers, "I don't really know. I was hoping we could talk through some ideas. I honestly didn’t think you would even like me back.” You ask, “Why not? You’re a great guy. Any girl would be honored to be with you.” He answers, “I … I’ve always thought that I wasn’t worth all the time and effort people put into relationships. I thought I was more of a low-commitment guy with only friends with benefits who show up once a month when I take a day off. I never thought I would be someone to like this amazing girl and them like me back." You smile and say, "This amazing girl really likes you." He smiles and asks, "Is it okay if we kiss?" You answer, "It's more than okay." He cups your face gently and presses his lips gently to yours.
You both get dressed and get into your car. Carmy drives you to pick up food for a picnic at a park. You get all your favorite snacks and drinks. It'll be so fun.
The picnic at the park goes really well. You both spend it getting to know each other more and just enjoying your day off. The sky gets dark and you make it to your car just before it starts to pour.
You both then go to the movie theater and you go see some new comedy that is out. You get snacks and drinks there too.
After the movies, Carmy asks, "I know this is a long shot, but uh is there any way I could stay with you again tonight? I just had a really good night's sleep and I want to be ready for Monday." You answer, "Of course. You might need a change of clothes though. Do you want to borrow my car tomorrow? I work from home tomorrow and I trust you." He asks, "Are you sure?" You answer, "I'm very sure. Drop me off at my place on the way back so I can get started on dinner for us then go pick up your clothes. Just make sure to park my car in spot 120 in the parking garage on your way back." He replies, "Ok. I'll hurry. I don't want you doing all the cooking for our dinner." You reply, "It's okay. I like cooking." He replies, "That's something we have in common." You smile.
Carmy drops you off and you start dinner. You decide to make homemade pizza, salad, and cookies. Luckily you have cookie batter from 2 days ago that you needed to bake, so that part is easy. You have homemade pizza dough that you were going to cook tonight anyway, so this works out. You just need to cut some toppings for the pizzas. You don't know Carmy's favorite pizza yet.
Someone knocks and Carmy walks in with a bag. He tosses it down and you both go to the kitchen. He exclaims, "It already smells good in here. What are you making?" You answer, "I had planned to have homemade pizzas tonight, so I'm chopping toppings for that. I also baked some leftover cookie dough that I had. I want to make a salad too. I don't know what you like on your pizza though. What else do you think we need?" He looks around and answers, "Honestly, I think we're good. I'd eat all this on a pizza. What do you like on your pizza?" You answer, "Cheese or pepperoni are classic staples. But, pulled pork and pear on pizza with mozzarella is to die for." He replies, "God, that sounds delicious. I like Margherita pizza with some sausage and extra cheese." You reply, "That sounds good too. I think we have everything for that, but sausage." He replies, "I'm willing to try it with the pulled pork." You reply, "Cool, we can each make our favorite pizza so we can both try it." He nods.
After cooking the pizzas, you both set the table with all of the delicious food. This looks like heaven.
Carmy LOVES your pizza and you enjoy the one he created. You won't tell him, but you still prefer your own.
You watch another movie that night before going to bed. You both take separate showers then you cuddle in bed.

Can you do a fic where the reader's been dating Sodapop for a year and she was a really bad father? She opens up to him about the trauma and he comforts her about it.

Tumblr media
You and Sodapop Curtis have been dating for a year now, pushing through bumpy and love-stricken moments. You were considerably in love with the man, absolutely head over heels for everything about him. Sodapop cared: that was shown throughout the time you met him. He would treat everyone with respect, hoping they'd give it back, such as customers and even his brothers. You knew him as your life, the man who held you when times got hard.
You hadn't told him about part of your life, your childhood. If the topic was mentioned, you would switch it with a kiss on the lips or a hug that squeezed his organs around. He was curious about how you covered such an important part from everyone.
Sodapop looks at you, his hands enveloping yours. He can tell you're shaking, his hand going to lie on your upper neck; just below your jaw.
“It's okay. You don't have to tell me today.” Sodapop reassures but you shake your head, and take a shaky breath in. You grip his hand for dear life, holding you down to Earth when you begin talking about your experiences. You don't remember when you started crying, but all you feel is Soda’s calloused fingers rubbing away the tears that fall. You tell him about everything, as it all begins to fall out of you: covered up emotions and feelings.
“I’m sorry, I'm sorry.” You beg out in worry about him knowing things you wanted to keep covered from him in hopes he would stay. Sodapop’s eyebrow raises and he looks at you funny. “Why are you apologizing, honey?” He asks and you pull yourself into his arms, crying into his soft shoulder.
He smells like everything you loved about him. It relaxes you once you get comfortable. “I’m sorry— I just, I kept that part covered because I was told it was an unlikeable trait about me.” You admit and Sodapop gives you a soft kiss against your forehead.
“Don’t ever keep something like that away. I had no idea why you were struggling, I thought it was my fault. And, it is far beyond an unlikeable trait. It shows how strong and worthy you are.”
You smile at his comforting words, giving him a kiss against his right after he said it. Suddenly, that weight that sat on you is disappearing along with Sodapop’s serious expression he puts on. “Thank you, so much. That meant a lot to me.” You thank his gently, kissing him once more and Sodapop pulls you back into his arms while his fingers draw hearts on your back.
“Always and forever, honey.”

After having a long think...
Even though I keep saying I'm going to go rest and stop obsessing about this, I guess I can't. I just suck at sitting still and being chill. My thoughts are under the cut out of respect for folks in the tags who don't want to engage in any drama around Seven.
Here is a list of all the push for Seven that has been noticed in the first two days (the thread is currently 30-posts deep but please do take a look):
Tumblr media
Note: I haven't vetted any of those comments. I just scrolled through them and felt so overwhelmed. It just doesn't look good, but I bow to any industry experts who have real data and experience.
Update: Artie has a good post here about Jimin's debut numbers and playlists. Also here about how Seven being promoted to radio isn't necessarily proof that it was payola and they have the numbers from credible sources to back that possibility up:
I'm just going to come right out and say it: I find payola dishonorable. It's not just advertising; it's basically bribes. And ads should never replace real people's streams.
I deeply respected that BTS and ARMY found such success without that stuff. It used to be about passionate artists, making their own music, which resonated with real people, who worked hard to promote it. It was about mutual respect.
JK's numbers don't look completely organic to me, but I don't think he had a hand in that.
I have such serious misgivings if this the direction Hybe is going in for JJK1, and have no clue how the group survives if the company picks and chooses their favorites for that kind of push. If this is the strategy for all BTS projects now, I have no idea how they can afford it. I'd really appreciate if they could come to us and try to explain how it could ever be on the up-and-up because I don't think it can.
I confess I will not be working hard at all for anything that seems inorganic. This project just looks like Scooter weaponizing Jungkook to win a dick-measuring contest with Taylor and others. I hate it.
That said, I've always been very clear that Jimin is my guide.
Jimin adores Jungkook. Jimin is working with and hanging out with Jungkook even as I type this. Jimin is choosing for now to stay with Hybe. Jimin is flying all over the world on Hybe's time and dime to work on even more projects. Jimin has more music to share with us, that Hybe is investing in. Jimin seems happy for the most part.
I will support Jimin and never move against the people Jimin loves.
I trust Jimin and give the benefit of the doubt to the people Jimin trusts.
When planning his first album, I do not believe that Jimin was told about decisions to split tracks, or skip play-listings, or what would get restocked, or if they'd buy ads for smoother streams on YouTube and Spotify or not, or what kind of articles would be written about him.
I believe Jimin had plenty of input on the design, look, feel, sound, tracks, cast, choreo, performances--all the creative aspects of his album. I think he was able to say what he needed to say and get Letter hidden on his album for Jungkook. But I don't think he was roped into strategic plans and profit and loss statements and marketing roll-outs in any great detail. I arrive at this idea based on my own experience in the entertainment industry--I could be wrong.
And so I think the same for Jungkook. I think Jungkook had input on some of the creative aspects of this single (and likely had suspicions of what working under Hybe America and Scooter might entail). I have no idea the conversations and pressures he faced around this topic, or if he simply trusted Bang PD to handle it. I don't know what all he talked about with Jimin and the hyungs.
I do know there was a time this year when he came to us on lives deeply depressed and almost lost, despondent. I know there was a group dinner where many things were discussed. And then there were many times he came to us on lives, inspired by and enamored with Jimin, memorizing and hyping up his work with such pure adoration, even as their own company refused to even mention Jimin's successes.
So I ask myself: does Jeon Jungkook really have it in him to steal Jimin's ideas or push himself out ahead of his hyungs, embracing unequal treatment and unfair advantages, just so he can be the one to make it big in the West?
And in looking for that answer, I'm reminded of this clip:
No. I don't think that's who Jeon Jungkook is. At least, it isn't the Jeon Jungkook I knew.
I am sad to say I think that is exactly who Scooter Braun is and who Bang PD has become. That is what the company would do. But not our Jungkook. Not unless everyone in the group was on board with it, somehow.
Jimin is standing by Jungkook. So I am standing by Jungkook--as a person.
But I've bought Seven once and I've added it to my night playlist and that's all the moves I'm making on that project. I will not be setting alarms to vote or using extra accounts to buy or hash-tagging anything, nor getting any merch, nor requesting local spins, none of that. It's a catchy song but as the thread I linked to above shows, it is a guaranteed "success" even without me. So I'm using my energy to support Jimin and other BTS projects that resonate with me and need me.
My stance on this might offend you, and I respect your feelings. I do not identify as a solo or anti. I still think of myself as aJimin-biased Jikooker who loves the members. I am probably toeing the line of being a manti, as I feel this company has broken faith with me. Not the creative or administrative staff, but the executives. I feel like they've ended our ten-year legacy in shame.
If it gets much worse, I may just dip out of the fandom after Jimin goes into service. I don't know. Probably I will have to see how things work out for the other solo works and plans for the group for 2025. At the moment, I have far bigger things to worry about, like colitis.
I can't lie, what I've seen so far with this rollout really shocked me, gave me a bit of an identity crisis, as ARMY. I don't want to assume the worst; neither do I want to bury my head in the sand for the sake of my ship or my favorite songs.
I will always act in accordance with my own conscience, based on the limited information I have. If I get better information, I will of course update my viewpoints. If at any point that causes anyone who is friended with me distress, I will understand completely if we need to part ways. I never, EVER wish to cause anyone harm.
But I'm too sick to argue and debate too much, too long. Boraland was supposed to be a place to unwind and feel inspired, not get more stressed. These past few 1.5 years months as ARMY has been exhausting in every sense of the word. So I'm choosing to put my energy into the things that bring some joy in my life.
I'm choosing to trust and follow Jimin's lead, for now.

This is my (unasked for) review and critique of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. I’m not expecting much of a response, I just have so much to say and no one to talk about it with. I’m putting it here so it doesn’t fester in my brain and it’s my blog, I can talk about whatever I want.
I am going to divide it into two major sections, the first being a review of the show as a stand alone, the second being a comparison to the source material. Each section will have smaller headers so I can stay on topic and organized, I’m going to try really hard not to obnoxiously rant or flood my review with unsupported opinions. I have a lot to say, but I want to make sure I articulate myself well and don’t fall into venting without reason. If you see me doing that, please let me know.
I want it to be made clear now that these are my thoughts on the show, I’m not forcing anyone to think the same as I do or insulting anyone for having different views than me. I also want people to know that this is an extensive detailed review, I’m going to be covering a lot of very broad and very narrow topics. I’m not trying to nitpick inconsequential details, this review is supposed to focus on important and fundemental aspects of the show. I will be harsh, but I’m going to try not to be unreasonable.
This is going to be extremely long. If you’re not interested in reading it all, I completely understand and I’m going to include my initial rating and a summary of why I gave it that rating here.
My overall rating of the show: 4/10
Review Summary: While the visual effects and environments were for the most part really great, the quality of writing fell behind drastically in comparison. There were major issues with characterization, consistency, and plot development that will pose a challenge in future seasons. The dialogue was often dry and overly expository, it allowed no room for nuance, subtlety, or complexity because they’re constantly telling us what everyone is doing, thinking, and feeling. The acting was mostly subpar, but I think that was because the writing suffered so greatly rather than through major lack of talent or skill from the actors. The pacing was abysmal, 8 episodes was never going to be enough time to tell this story. For me, it has a very surface level amount of entertainment but as soon as you try to look a little closer, try to answer questions or search for any depth, the quality drops entirely.
Extensive in depth review below. Because I’m not watching the show as I’m writing this, please let me know if I’m misremembering any major details so that I can correct myself if/when needed.
Sorry in advance for how obnoxiously long this is, I tried to give clear headers so you can bounce around any specific topics that interest you.
NETFLIX ATLA as a Stand Alone Show
In this section, I will not be making any comparisons or references to previous Avatar content. I will do my best to strictly speak on what Netflix gave us and its quality in different categories.
Costumes/Makeup
Overall, I thought the design of the costumes and styling was really solid. They felt really unique and representative of the different cultures, which is always appreciated. There was an issue for me though that took me out of the show sometimes. Nothing looked lived in. There was no dirt, stains, wrinkles, or wear and tear of any kind and the colors were so bright. The actors sometimes looked like they were doing a theater play or dressing up for Halloween, not living in a struggling world at war. Overall, costuming and makeup was really good, just throw some dirt on there!
Yue’s wig was terrible, I think we can all agree.
I do have a gripe with Zuko’s design though. His scar looks like a bruise or an eye infection, not a gruesome burn scar. I know I’m not the first person to say this, and I’ll keep saying it until they listen. It needs texture, it needs to be larger, and for the love of god shave his eyebrow.
Environments and Locations
I thought the locations looked great, especially the artful cgi on the wide shots of places like the Southern Air Temple, the Fire Nation and their ships, and Omashu. Good cinematography and just really well done work as a whole. There’s a few times when the backgrounds during scenes looked more like stage sets than lived in cities or villages, but it was rarely anything so drastic it harmed the show for me. I really liked the amount of background clutter and knickknacks that helped with realism and there was always a lot of people that helped these places feel populated. Zuko’s room on his ship especially was so cool, it told so much of his story without ever needing explanation. Having a collection of avatar artifacts and plastering his walls with drawings, research, theories, maps, and plans was genius. I loved that they included animals, once again it helps with immersion and realism, and it would be really easy to just not include them for simplicity sake. Especially the funky animal hybrids, I hope to see more going forward! The use of ice, wood, furs, and bone for the Southern Water Tribe was so good. The massive rib cage for the community hut in the tribe was fantastic. I could go on for a long time. For me, the settings were probably the best part of the season.
Bending Graphics
The strongest elements of bending visually were air and fire. They really captured the movements of each, the fluidity and speed of air bending, and the aggression and passion of fire bending. Earth bending looked okay, the actors did a pretty good job of making it look heavy, but overall it felt like it was moving too slowly to me. I think the scene at the beginning of the first episode was the best example of earth bending. The fight with Bumi was very underwhelming for me.
Water bending looked terrible almost the whole time. The way the water physically looked was pretty good, but there was absolutely no weight behind it. Every time Katara hit someone with water, it splashed with the force of a Nerf water gun. The movements were slow, clunky, and so nonthreatening I probably wouldn’t have tried to dodge a single one of her attacks. Her battle with Pakku was one of the most boring battles I’ve ever seen. There was no haste or desperation in either participant. I’m hoping they’ll figure out how to do this better in the future. The ice was decent though.
As a whole, the fight choreography looked pretty good. Certainly moves I could never do. There were times when characters were completely cgi to account for difficult or impossible moves and it was really obvious. Aang in particular looked very wonky when he was fully cgi during his Avatar State moments or when he was flying around like his introduction scene. So passable but definitely room for improvement, I think the artists who work on these aspects of shows and films are very impressive.
Dialogue
The dialogue is 80% exposition, 19% repetitive conversations about responsibility and duty, and 1% misplaced poorly written humor. It’s unnatural, it’s dry, it doesn’t allow for any nuance, and there’s no room for character growth or connection when they have to waste all their words on making sure the plot is on track.
When the introduction of your main character is him looking directly into the camera and telling us the kind of person he is, there’s a dialogue problem. When so much happens off screen that you have to have characters talk to fill in plot holes because there’s just not enough time to tell the story, there’s a dialogue problem. When you put intentional pauses around bad jokes for people to laugh, there’s a dialogue problem. When characters have to say over and over that they’re family but they don’t feel like family in the slightest, there’s a dialogue and characterization problem. I’m not going to script the bad examples, I don’t have the time or patience for that, but I was very unimpressed. It felt like the first draft of a script to me.
And I dare anyone, of legal drinking age of course, to take a shot every time a character says the words responsibility or duty. I swear the floor and ceiling will switch before you reach episode 3. If characters have to keep shoving their responsibilities down our throats without actually doing anything to solve them, there’s a dialogue, characterization, and plot problem.
Also one of my biggest pet peeves with a series is when the first episode or movie ends with a line like “It’s only the beginning” and then plays crazily dramatic music. But that’s a personal preference, not an actual issue.
Acting
First and foremost, I have nothing against any of these actors. I’m sure they’re perfectly wonderful people and they deserve opportunities to prove themselves. My goal here is not to shame or insult or belittle any actor on this show. That being said, none of their performances were perfect and I do have critiques. This is not meant to be a personal attack on any of them or on anyone who enjoyed their performances.
I think the dialogue and overall writing really worked against the potential these actors had. I don’t know how involved the director was in the filming process or helping them with their performances, but there were definitely some failures here.
The strongest performances to me were Sokka, Iroh, Lieutenant Jee, and the Earth bender that threatened Iroh when he was captured (I couldn’t find his name, but he had an unprecedentedly good performance). By far the best was Jee, I felt his emotion more than any other character on the show and would love to see a lot more of him. Sokka balanced well enough with what he was given, but he also had the most character opportunity (which I’ll get into in the next section). Iroh I think filled the mentor roll pretty well, the writing for him leaned a little to close to fortune cookie, but he did feel wise and powerful when he needed to be, mostly. For a comedian though, his humor fell really flat to me, I wish they had given Paul Sun-Hyung Lee some freedom to improv, I think he would’ve done a good job if he could play with the character.
Katara and Azula were awful (so was Mai, but she didn’t get a lot of screen time so I’m not going to focus on her). Katara was so dull and emotionless for the majority of her role, her delivery felt so unnatural. Again, I think the writing was an obstacle, but I felt no connection from Katara at all. And certainly not between her and any of the other characters, which is a major problem for one of the main cast. Her and Sokka felt like strangers half the time, like they were getting to know each other as much as we were getting to know them. I swear Azula’s actress was reading off a teleprompter the entire time, she was somehow robotic and overacted at the same time (I’m sorry, I know that’s harsh, but she just isn’t a good actress, at least not in this).
Zuko had some really solid moments, his scenes with Iroh in particular were great, but overall I didn’t love him. A lot of people seem to be upset at his “tantrums” but honestly I think they fit the character well, though there was one or two too many. He’s an extremely troubled teenager estranged from his family and home, tantrums make sense. Again, I think the dialogue really got in the way of his potential and I don’t think he pushed his acting range enough. Almost every actor needed to show more emotion in one way or another.
Aang has some of the best moments and some of the worst. I have a lot of respect for young child actors, especially ones taking on the challenge of such a massive beloved character or franchise. It’s a lot of pressure for someone still growing up and learning how to be his own person. He handled the few childlike moments Aang was given so so well, he has the brightest little smile and playful attitude. The disconnect came with his more serious moments, he’d get these long monologues and, like Azula, sometimes seemed like he was reading off a teleprompter. I do think it’s a character he’ll grow into really nicely though as long as the writing lends itself to that.
It’s very important to remember that the director signs off on everything. Every performance, every scene, every script (that is also signed off by the lead writer). If something is off, it is not strictly the actors’ faults and should never be treated as such. Do the actors need more experience? Sure, but they more importantly need better direction, scripts, and support from the crew than what they’ve gotten. I’ve seen interviews with the main cast and they all seem wonderful with a lot of potential, particularly the actor for Aang, so clearly the director and lead writer are the ones that are slacking.
Characterization (of the main cast)
Aang
He goes through no change or character development from the beginning to the end of this season.
His water bending training hasn’t even started and he has no further control of the avatar state, so power wise he’s remained completely stagnant.
He constantly says how important Sokka and Katara are, because they’re his “friends”, but there’s been no bonding or development of their relationships. If they didn’t tell us so often, I wouldn’t even think they knew each other beyond first day of school ice breakers.
His most profound moment was his conversation with Gyatso in the spirit world, which I actually really liked. I think he really needed support from someone who knew him before. The home being deserted when Aang goes back to see him definitely hurt.
It feels like this show really really wants us to hate this 12 year old boy. Every adult or authority figure is constantly yelling or berating Aang for something he didn’t even do, it was an accident he didn’t come home and got frozen in ice. Especially from the avatar spirits who should know for a fact he didn’t purposefully run from his responsibilities. The tone is all off and I’m not sure the writers understand what they wrote.
Aang’s biggest mental hurdle will continue to be his guilt for disappearing, which he didn’t even do on purpose so the guilt is unjustified, at least the amount others are thrusting on him.
He looks confident at the end of the season, but I don’t buy it because he hasn’t earned it, there was nothing that he did or said that showed why he would feel so confident when he hasn’t learned anything and he hasn’t proven himself capable beyond getting possessed by the right spirits.
His reaction and aftermath to the death of his entire culture was very underwhelming. His grief sent him into the Avatar state and then he mutters a bland apology and the others are mad at him for falling apart when he’s literally lost everything and everyone he’s ever known. It’s something that needs to be handled far more delicately and it’s not.
As the titular character, it kinda sucks how sidelined his character development has been.
Sokka
If I had no knowledge of this series going into it, I might assume Sokka is the main character because he has the most developmental moments in the season and is easily the most well written character.
Physically handing over the protection of his tribe, while small, was a profound moment for him because he was not only going against his father’s orders, it was the first step to realizing he could be something more than a fishing boy from the south. Which is pretty much his whole emotional arc.
With Suki, he was able to prove himself as someone willing to learn and better himself as a warrior. He learned too fast considering it felt like they were only there for a day maybe, but they were on a time crunch with pacing.
In Omashu, Sokka found that his hobby for invention shows he has a talent for engineering and being a tactician. These are pretty important traits that make him a well rounded character.
By the end of the season, he’s gone through pretty profound loss and change to become the beginnings of a leader.
He was kind of supposed to be comic relief as well, but honestly to me it was done as a sloppy afterthought and almost none of the humor landed. Not just with him, but with most comedic moments.
Katara
I’m sorry, I’m about to rip this poor girl to shreds, the writing for her was awful.
She has absolutely no personality beyond the thousand yard stare she gets every time her mom comes up. Every emotion she has is weak and downplayed by exposition, she’s mostly passive and has almost no effect on the characters around her (besides Jet sort of? And I guess Pokku during the most boring fight of the show).
She adds almost nothing to the team besides being a water bender. It’s literally her only characteristic beyond dead mother.
Speaking of water bending, she did absolutely nothing to earn the title of master and no one can convince me otherwise.
She learned six moves from a scroll, trained off screen so we have to take her word for it, made one move that she copied from another bender, and never once had a single second of instruction from an actual master. Getting that title when she’s done nothing to earn it is crazy.
Teaching herself with no support or guidance is not empowering like the writers seem to think it is. It’s just lazy and so unrealistic it’s laughable. She doesn’t have any of the training necessary to be considered a master.
Also I just really dislike how every obstacle for her to be a better water bender is a mental one, first with Aang and then with Jet. Like yes, clearly emotional state matters, but it’s still a physical discipline that requires technique and training of which she’s had none of besides pictures in the scroll.
The fact she was so dismissive and disrespectful of healing bothers me too when it’s a very valuable practice. She didn’t stay for that training either, so how is she going to use the oasis water in the future? Oh wait, Katara’s “a natural” which is just so infuriating because she’s barely struggled to learn a thing the whole season. As soon as she’s in a good mood, her bending works just fine. That’s not how learning or mastering a discipline should work.
Sorry, I know I’m getting into ranting, I’m backing off. It’s just such poor character work for someone so important to the story.
Zuko
Episode 6, “Masks”, was by far the best episode and largely because of Zuko’s character work. Outside of that episode, he’s pretty consistently narrow minded and angry which doesn’t offer him a lot of depth. But it’s all packed into “Masks”.
I loved that the 41st division was his crew as it was physical proof of his sacrifice and compassion for life. Obviously his scar is also proof, but seeing the people he saved alive hits different. And the fact that he didn’t try to take any credit is very modest and honorable for him.
However, I wish he had chosen to make the 41st his crew rather than it being forced on him as an additional punishment to his banishment. I think if he had made that choice, it would have showed even stronger resolve.
His moment with Aang in the shed after rescuing him as the Blue Spirit was very well done and showed how hard it’s going to be for him to overcome his father’s influence.
Lu Ten’s funeral was a wonderful moment meant to build on Zuko’s relationship with Uncle Iroh, it was quite beautiful.
Unfortunately, outside of the moments I mentioned, there wasn’t much other opportunity for character growth because it had to be so exposition heavy.
Although he did choose to go after his Uncle instead of the Avatar in Omashu and that’s an important value in family that Zuko has.
I do appreciate that they cemented his ideals around honest and honorable glory, but it did get a little preachy and repetitive.
I think overall he has a lot of potential for growth in future seasons.
Pacing
Whoever thought 8 episodes was enough to tell this story is extremely delusional. Having more minutes does not equal having more time, 8 episodes offers no wiggle room for such an expansive story no matter how long they are. I’m so sick of production companies thinking it’s okay to so heavily compress storytelling, let your characters breathe and give them some time to develop. It’s one thing when it’s something like Queen’s Gambit (which is fantastic, if you haven’t watched it you should!) that only focuses on one person vs Avatar which is balancing four or five main characters, extensive world building, and complicated plots. It’s something that needs time, but is instead rushed so drastically there’s barely any time to comprehend one conflict or character before another one is expositing in your face. Netflix is one of the biggest offenders of this, but HBO does the same. The Last of Us could have used an extra episode or two for Joel and Ellie’s relationship to solidify more (I’m not going to get into TLOU though, so please don’t come for me for this opinion, it’s not the focus and if you want a more extensive review of that, let me know). It feels like writers think characterization and development just happens and they don’t have to take the time to actually write it in.
With 2-4 more episodes, they could have had the time to really explore the things they needed to without overloading on exposition. Ask yourself how much time did you feel like passed between episode one and eight? Did it feel like the few months it was supposed to be? To me it felt like maybe two-three weeks, and that’s not the fault of watching it so quickly. There’s never any indication of how much time passes, which is its own issue, but also ultimately confuses audiences if they have to guess.
Every interaction and conflict is rushed, why are these writers so scared to take their time? If Netflix isn’t offering more episodes, then you need to adjust your writing to compensate, not condense everything like a sardine can and then act surprised when it’s a structural problem. It’s a fundamental issue that affected the entire potential of the show.
Plot
Aang should have, at the very least, started mastering water bending. It’s stated several times in the season that he needs to in order to fully become the avatar and be powerful enough to end the war. That is the overarching plot that is integral to the story. And yet he doesn’t bend a single drop of water the entire show until he’s forced to after being possessed by the vengeful ocean spirit (and when Kyoshi also possesses him, but again that wasn’t him, that was the avatar state). Because of the time skips that’ll have to happen between seasons, he’ll probably do most, if not all, of his water bending training off screen. Which is, say it with me, bad writing!
They kept hinting at the comet but never outright said what it would do or when it would arrive. Not giving any kind of timeline for the biggest conflict of the show is really worrisome for their future plans. I understand they have to allow a certain amount of time flexibility to account for the younger actors aging, especially Aang, which I completely understand and respect. That’s why time skips will happen. But to not give any kind of timeline shows really poor planning.
Also, please tell me if I’m misremembering or if I somehow missed it during my watch through, but I’m pretty sure Team Avatar still doesn’t even know about the comet, what it means, or when it’s coming. That’s a pretty big thing to overlook when it’s the catalyst for the Fire Nation’s power.
The fact that the show kicked off with the genocide of the Airbenders, who are all conveniently in the same spot, and Aang just happened to escape it because he essentially went for a walk to clear his head and got caught in a storm that came out of no where is way too coincidental for believable circumstances. It’s, louder for those in the back, bad writing!
They had four years to plan this all out, I don’t understand why it all seems so unfinished and thrown together with pieces from different jigsaw puzzles!
Comparisons to Source Material
In this section, I will be comparing the Netflix adaptation of ATLA to the original animated series. This will be about things that stuck out most to me as consistencies, changes, and valuable moments in each rendition of the story.
Consistencies
Writing-wise, obviously they got a lot of the big plot points down, and I’m not going to list them all. If you’ve watched both, you know what they are. Pretty much the essentials…sort of. The great divide even got a shoutout which I thought was funny.
I mentioned above how “Masks” was by far the best episode of the Netflix season, well it’s not a coincidence that it also has the most parallels and consistencies with the episodes it was based on (“Storm” and “Blue Spirit” which are also arguably the best episodes of Book One). I was going to be so mad if they took away the Blue Spirit part of Zuko’s character, but clearly it’s a fan favorite and for the most part I think they did it justice.
I loved that they kept in a lot of the hybrid animals, at least in dialogue if we didn’t actually get to see them. It would have been a really easy thing to just get rid of for simplicity sake. I hope we get to see some more CGI versions of these animals because the ostrich horse looked really good. Momo and Appa for the most part looked good, sometimes a little wonky but nothing crazy, I just wish they had more screen time. They don’t feel like characters yet, just a pet and a vehicle (essentially).
I was really pleasantly surprised to see Hei Bai, I was honestly expecting them to scrap him. He looked really cool too. I do wish we could have seen him turn back into a panda when Aang helped him, but overall I’m just glad we got him at all.
I didn’t love what they used him for, but Kho was visually amazing and everything I hoped for. Absolutely terrifying, will haunt my nightmares again.
June was also a pleasant surprise, I hadn’t looked too deep into the cast list and wasn’t sure if she’d be included. I did think it was a little weird she was flirting with Iroh vs the other way around (like what was the point of that? just take out the flirting entirely if you’re going to be weird about it) but overall she’s pretty much one to one the same and I still liked her a lot. Nala should have been a little more anteater/mole-like instead of wolfish but overall not bad at all.
We got the Cabbage Man. They teased him a little a first, but we got him.
My Favorite Moments from the Netflix Version that Change or Expand on the Original
I sang its praises above, but again Lu Ten’s funeral scene was just so beautiful and really built on Iroh’s fatherly affection for Zuko. I know it’s mostly a replacement for the leaves from the vine scene in “Tales of Ba Sing Se” because they’re never going to be able to fit in that episode. So it’s nice that they deemed it a moment worth capturing in a different way.
I’m not going to reiterate exactly what I said above so go see Zuko’s characterization again if you need to, but making the 41st division his crew members was a constructive choice that I liked a lot.
I don’t know why but just the idea of Gyatso sticking around in the spirit world to be able to speak to Aang one last time hit me so hard. I absolutely loved it as an addition to building their relationship. Aang always deserved a goodbye, and even though this wasn’t exactly that, it was what Aang needed to cope with his immense loss and the pressure he was under.
When Iroh was arrested by the guards of Omashu and being taken to the pit, he had a really intense but moving interaction with one of the earth bending soldiers. I think it was such a good way to portray war and perspectives from both sides. The soldier rightfully and angrily blamed Iroh for his brother who died at the siege of Ba Sing Se, which Iroh was responsible for. He accused Iroh of being evil, of having never gone through loss, which we as viewers know isn’t true, but he doesn’t say anything. Doesn’t defend himself. Doesn’t reveal his own loss to get even. He takes the abuse and the blame and just utters that enough people have been hurt. Great performances all around, really solid writing. I wish more of the show had followed this example.
That lady hitting Zuko with a brush to stop him from attacking Aang, a child, in Omashu’s marketplace. That was one of the funniest scenes in the whole show. Bring her back!
“Everything I need is on this boat.” - ‘nuff said.
Major Character Differences (I’ll try to keep this concise)
Aang
He lost the majority of his lightheartedness which made him so lovable in the first place. He does a lot of monologues and speeches to intense music now. He’s still 12 guys, let him swim with giant elephant koi and dress up as Pippinpaddleopsicopolis the Third to get into Omashu!
I really don’t like that they changed him actively running from his title and responsibilities to just going for a jaunt with Appa to clear his head. That removes so much depth, guilt, and fear that he should have. In the original, it was his choice to run away with the intention of hiding and never coming back, in the Netflix version, it was an accident he never came home. That’s a massive character change.
People called him a coward, but he literally isn’t when it was a very coincidental accident that forced him into the ice in the first place rather than his choice to actively run from his destiny. He’s yelled at and screamed at and insulted constantly, even by people who are meant to help him, when he didn’t even do what they’re accusing him of. He didn’t deliberately run away, he accidentally got caught in a storm. And he just takes all of that guilt and blame and anger from everyone when he genuinely did nothing wrong.
Getting rid of his crush on Katara is a problem, but I’ll get into that more later.
I don’t care why they think they did it, but making Aang agree with Pakku in any respect about not letting Katara train or fight was so extremely disrespectful to both characters.
His reaction to losing his people was way underdeveloped, they gave him no time to grieve. And the fact that Katara doesn’t help him out of his initial Avatar State spiral is so damaging to the friendship they’re supposed to have. Their friendship always came first, let them interact and build that relationship!
Sokka
His small sexism arc that everyone is up in arms about. Do I think it should have been included? Yes. Is it the end all be all of his character? No, like I mentioned above, he got the most character moments in the show. But it was really important in its own way. I saw someone say, “Sokka may not be misogynistic, but Netflix’s ATLA adaptation certainly is.” And they’re right.
What I really didn’t like was what they did with his relationship with his father and ice dodging. Sokka had a great relationship with Hakoda built on trust, mutual admiration, similar tactical mindsets, and strength of character. He passed his ice dodging test with Bato with flying colors. There’s no reason to completely flip those dynamics, there’s already enough other conflicts to explore without giving Sokka daddy issues he didn’t have in the first place. Whoever made that choice was projecting hard.
Hakoda eventually trusts Sokka to lead the invasion in Book 3, but none of that exists here and it doesn’t feel like there’s a path yet to lead to that. (I have a lot to say about the invasion later)
They have Sokka take over a very paternal role with Katara instead of her being maternal, and he is constantly very overbearing, patronizing, and talking down to her as if she has no (or does not deserve a) mind or agency of her own. They (as in the writers) are acting like the age difference between them is 10 years instead of 1-2 years.
Also taking out the very important moment when Sokka was the one who saved an entire Fire Nation village from Jet was just wrong. Not only was it an important stepping stone towards leadership and diplomacy for Sokka, but it also showed that even on the “bad side” of the war, there are innocent people who deserve protecting.
Sokka wasn’t nearly as funny as he should have been.
Katara
Everything about her was wrong, scrap it and try again.
She had none of the passion she should have had. Katara gets mad, she yells and insults and waves her arms around to make her point. She gets jealous and petty. But she’s also so unbelievably kind and caring, she’s the only reason any of them take proper care of themselves. She’s lighthearted and fun when she can be, she plays and laughs and cares so incredibly deeply.
Katara inspires people in a way none of the other characters can, although Aang does learn a lot from her in that regard. She’s incredibly hardworking, loyal, and dedicated to those she loves. And yes, she feels immense pain and sadness for her mother, but that’s not all she is.
LA Katara felt like a hollow shell 90% of the time used for exposition, 5% mom trauma, and 5% sort of emotional. The writing just didn’t lend itself to complexity, flaws, or character depth.
She’s one of the first well written and well rounded female characters a lot of us encountered as kids and they stripped her of everything that made her who she is. Someone for young girls to look up to. It’s shameful.
For some reason they made her explicitly and directly responsible for her mother’s death, which is a very strange and damaging change to make that I don’t think they totally understand the difference of from the original.
They took away all of her maternal behavior, which just tells us what they think of maternal behavior, that it’s a weak trait for a leading character and not worth exploring in a person that had to take that role in her family and village as a whole at such a young age. It’s like the writers thought that Katara being motherly was problematic and sexist, which is a mindset that is itself problematic and sexist.
They’ve essentially turned bending into a magic that relies solely on emotional and mental stability instead of a martial arts form requiring discipline and training. I don’t even think the writers realize they’ve done this, which in and of itself is a massive issue.
Although I will say the water whip on the flaming arrow was a good use of water bending, it just didn’t feel earned to me.
For as much as they focused on her mom, they never once brought up Katara’s necklace?? They took out Pokku’s connection to Gran Gran and never mentioned anything about betrothal necklaces. There’s just so many changes they made, large and small, that feel pointless or contradictory to the source material for no reason.
Zuko
Frankly, so early into Zuko’s character arc, there isn’t a lot of difference here. Most of his development starts in Book 2. I do like the animated version a lot better, though. I am biased, but I also think that even though they hit on almost all the same points, the original just handled it with far more nuance, care, and time. With the Netflix version being so rushed, any payoffs we had just didn’t feel totally earned.
I do think it was a big shame that they had Iroh kill Zhao instead of allowing Zuko’s attempt to save him from the ocean spirit. It’s a pretty important character moment that shows how Zuko wants to help people, save people, if he can regardless of how they’ve treated him. They can make this point again if they do “Zuko Alone”, but I’m honestly really scared they’ll cut it.
Having Zuko fight back during the Agni Kai against his father in the flash back was way out of character and takes away from the severity of the punishment and the trauma of the abuse. He was a 13 year old child terrified of not just disappointing his father, but of suffering harm from the one person he should trust most. And Ozai convinces him he deserves it, so there’s no world where he would have fought back in that scene. And it changes the meaning from a father violently burning a child that has surrendered and begs for forgiveness to a soldier winning a one-on-one battle against another soldier and branding his victory, no matter how dishonorable it is.
Also, at this point, Zuko is an amateur fire bender with barely any experience or progress in his training. Him getting the high ground over Ozai for even a second is ridiculous and diminishes Ozai’s skill level. It could be argued Ozai did it on purpose to give Zuko an opportunity to prove himself as ruthless as Ozai wants him to be, but that completely goes against the precedent set by Ozai that he hates being questioned or otherwise made to look weak in front of anyone. I think I understand what they were going for, but honestly it came off as an opportunity to show off the actor’s fighting skills rather than holding the weight it should for the story.
I DO like that Zuko has a war journal (*diary*) about the avatar, history, and essentially a map of his journey. I DON’T like that Team Avatar uses it as an expository tool and excuse to not properly explore the world and learn things for themselves or through other people.
I don’t think Zuko said the word “honor” once, but please correct me if I’m wrong.
Iroh
Similar to Zuko, they hit a lot of the same surface level points with a few misses here and there.
They didn’t show us Iroh’s connection to the spirit world, they just told us right before the battle at the North Pole and we’re supposed to believe it, which we do because we’ve seen the original, but that was kind of lame. (Not including Roku’s dragon was also lame, but I digress).
They expanded on his past in a few different ways which I did like a lot and mentioned above.
The Netflix version comes off more preachy and gimmicky to me than wise, which is disappointing. I think the actor could have done amazingly with the right script.
They didn’t show him redirecting lightning, which is arguably one of the most valuable skills in the entire show and extremely important for the finale for both Aang and Zuko.
And just like Sokka, he was not nearly funny enough.
Bumi
His characterization was all backwards and wrong and I hated it.
Visually, his makeup and design was pretty good, but that’s the extent of any positives with the Netflix version.
Bumi would absolutely never ever ever have made a joke about the genocide that took Aang’s entire people. That was disgusting and disrespectful to Bumi and Aang.
He was never mad at Aang for disappearing, he was actually extremely understanding and only hoping to teach Aang further about his duties as the avatar. He quite literally welcomed him back with open arms.
The way he treated others, especially his servants, was appalling and borderline cruel.
He never stepped down from protecting his people or became complacent in a way that put them in danger, Omashu was thriving beautifully under his care. When he surrendered to the Fire Nation in Book 2, it was the best way to protect his people without bloodshed and he knew he’d eventually get their home back. He was literally waiting for the Solar Eclipse to do it (which I’ll touch more on later).
This also means that by having Bumi actively fight and lose, instead of surrendering with neutral jing, he won’t be able to realistically give Aang the advice that is supposed to lead him to Toph. Wait and Listen.
I did appreciate the lesson he was trying to convey to Aang about the difficult choices that wartime forces on us, especially leadership (like who gets what food or medicine), but they did it all wrong.
Shame on the writers for what they did to Bumi’s character, I could write an entire essay on everything they screwed up just with Bumi.
Suki
They made her into a lovesick day dreamer instead of the strong warrior and leader she was meant to be. She’s going to go off to war, don’t diminish her strength. Her being a fighter should be the forefront of her character, not a lonely girl pining for a boy and dreaming about the big world.
Her and Sokka’s relationship should have been built up over time, their kiss was so misplaced. When not much time passes before Sokka falls for Yue, it makes him seem like a player.
And that moment Suki’s staring at him shirtless is cringy and yucky, they’re teenagers. Don’t do that.
We’ll see how she is when she shows up again…I actually liked the actress quite a bit, but her writing wasn’t good. That seems to be a theme here though.
I do wish her hair was still auburn instead of black, that’s personal preference though.
Gyatso
They did him so dirty with his death, it was anticlimactic with none of the power or savagery that was implied in the original. His skeleton was literally surrounded by dead Fire Nation soldiers, I wanted to see that dangerous potential on screen and am very disappointed not to get it given how explicitly they wanted to show the genocide of the airbenders.
Jet
Jet’s vendetta is specifically against the Fire Nation. On some level I do believe he would resort to violence against a traitor giving the Fire Nation information, but I don’t think he ever would have put Tao or other innocent (non-Fire Nation) bystanders at such great risk. Maybe that’s splitting hairs though since in the original he was prepared to drown an entire village, of Fire Nation people specifically, as a whole he felt pretty consistent.
I just don’t like Netflix smashing so many plots and characters together, they deserve room to breathe in their own stories.
I hate that he was the catalyst for Katara’s bending training though, instead of her own hard work and practice or training with actual masters. Jet knows nothing about bending or how it works. It’s another instance of stripping Katara of her skill and work ethic.
Yue
As a personal preference, I hate that they made Yue a water bender. She has part of the spirit of the moon in her, so logically I understand where they’re coming from giving her those abilities. But she’s not a water bender! The spirit was working to keep her alive, not to give her powers she shouldn’t have had in the first place.
She’s a princess dedicated to her people and wanting to learn how to lead but also buckling under the pressure of expectations, particularly around her arranged marriage. I saw none of that in the Netflix adaptation, except that she likes to make desserts when she’s stressed, so there’s that I guess. It’s just still missing the depth, but again they don’t have time to really explore these topics.
They make a point with Pokku about the role of women in the Northern Water Tribe and yet somehow Yue is allowed to just call off her arranged marriage. That’s a pretty distinct cultural contradiction. It just shows me the writers don’t know how to portray misogyny as a narrative tool or how to do consistent world building.
Her wig looked awful.
They should have used what happened to Momo (which ouch, that wasn’t necessary) as an opportunity for Katara to prove that she knows how to heal, because she hasn’t done it yet and she’s supposed to bring Aang back from the dead in Book 2.
Azula
I appreciated her introduction scene where she exposes a coup against her father while undercover. It was a little cheesy with her reveal, but it does establish her character decently well early on. And the cover she chose, dead brother and mother, is really interesting narratively.
The writers for Netflix went off about how they didn’t want to portray sexism, through Sokka specifically, but then they stripped the main female leads of most of their agency (Katara, Suki, and Azula all fit this category, I’m worried what they’ll do to Toph).
Azula has almost none of the arrogance that she should have, certainly none of the calm calculated intensity that made her so fearsome and intimidating. Azula should be scary, and she’s definitely not here. She just came off as such a brat with a twitchy face and prone to tantrums.
Her fire isn’t blue, that bothers me a lot. Blue fire is hotter than red fire, it’s supposed to be an indication of not only her fire bending strength but also her temperament. Plus it’s supposed to help us differentiate between their powers when she’s fighting Zuko.
Lightning bending requires so much skill, precision, power, and focus. I don’t believe for a second Netflix’s Azula should actually be able to do it. She was only able to do it because she was mad, and that’s not how it’s supposed to work.
She definitely didn’t earn being able to overpower Bumi and takeover Omashu. Although granted it feels like they nerfed a lot of Bumi’s power, he certainly doesn’t feel like one of the most powerful earth benders in the world.
Ozai had originally sent her out to collect Zuko and Iroh, not to lead an army in a battle against one of the greatest (or what should be one of the greatest) strongholds in the Earth Kingdom. It’s unrealistic and silly. And it’s not like Bumi gave up like he did in the original, he literally said “We’ll be ready to fight” when he revealed that the Fire Nation was headed their way.
Ozai treating her like a nuisance is also way out of character. He’s supposed to feed into her ego and inflating all of her more dangerous traits because he sees them as powerful and necessary for the future leader he expects Azula to be. Zuko should be the disappointing son with no faith or support from Ozai, and Azula the gifted prodigy given every opportunity and surpassing Zuko in Ozai’s eyes. As Zuko said, “He used to say Azula was born lucky, I was lucky to be born.” Somehow that dynamic has almost completely switched and Azula suffered the most from it.
She’s very miscast, the actress was awful. I’m sorry, but not sorry enough not to say it.
Ozai
Ozai should despise Zuko, he’s far more terrifying that way. It’s way more compelling watching a son that’s been so manipulated by his traumas try to win the affections of his father that don’t even exist than the same daddy issues we see in almost every movie or show where the son is trying to live up to his father’s expectations unhappily. Ozai should have no expectations for Zuko, that’s the difference. He sent Zuko on a mission he wouldn’t come back from on purpose, to get rid of him.
That’s terrifying, how disconnected he can be from his son. Trying to make Ozai more human or sympathetic by making him care for Zuko takes away from the monster he’s supposed to be as a villain. They’re not making him more complex, they’re making him more generic.
I just kind of generally don’t like that they’ve revealed so much about him and Azula in Book 1 because part of the well written structure of avatar is that the “villains” escalate from season to season, going from Zuko to Azula to Ozai as the main antagonists. I’d rather they had kept that structure and given more time to better plot and character development.
Plus revealing him so early took away a lot of his intimidation factor for me. Mystery and intrigue is good you guys! You don’t always have to lay all your cards on the table right away.
And at the end when Ozai more or less says that the attack on the Northern Water Tribe was a distraction to take Omashu makes zero sense to me. Not only is it an arbitrary copy of what Sozin said in the beginning about attacking the Earth Kingdom as a distraction for killing all of the air benders (which is also stupid), but thematically and structurally it doesn’t make any sense. The timeline doesn’t add up at all, not that they gave us any indications of timeline. And at this point in the war, the different nations, tribes, and kingdoms are so segregated that the Water Tribe probably wouldn’t have gone to help Omashu in the first place, certainly not in time.
Also I refuse to ignore the blatant contradiction they put in Zuko’s scar story. Zuko is punished extremely severely for INDIRECTLY insulting Ozai, when he’d literally been asked what he thought of the war plans, but when Iroh DIRECTLY questioned Ozai in front of the entire court and spectators (interrupting the Agni Kai, a sacred type of battle in the Fire Nation), there’s no punishment at all. I really don’t understand what the writers are doing with the amount of contradictions.
Roku
Botched, I hated what they did to Roku.
Trying to make him funny? That, right away, ruined his character entirely. I won’t ever be able to take him seriously. He would never make jokes when Aang is desperately looking for guidance and understanding. He’s not a funny silly character, it’s like the writers forgot to add in some levity and chose literally the worst character to force humor onto.
Roku is one of the coolest and wisest characters in the series with some of the most badass scenes and they took away all of them. The future of his portrayal does not look bright.
Kyoshi
Now, I love Kyoshi as much as the next person, but she got way too much screen time.
Not only did they give Roku’s badass possession moment in the Fire Nation Temple to her for absolutely no reason on Kyoshi Island, but they made her the leading influence of Aang’s spiritual journey (he’s constantly trying to reconcile with the advice she gave him) which makes zero sense.
The hundred year war is the consequence of Roku’s legacy and mistakes, it has literally nothing to do with Kyoshi. Roku should be the one mentoring Aang spiritually and guiding him through the remnants of his choices as the Avatar.
Giving her weird future vision for the attack on the North Pole was really weird and made no sense to me, and completely shifted Aang’s motivations from learning water bending (which he never does even once) to warning the Northern Water Tribe, which they end up not even needing him to do because they’re already prepared to fight. Just a convoluted mess narratively.
She isn’t supposed to be that agro of a character, she’s pragmatic and diplomatic. They based her off the memes far more than her source material and it shows.
Making Kyoshi so much more prominent feels like such an insincere thing to do for the sake of “girl boss strong female characters hoorah” that ultimately hurts the writing.
Kuruk
I don’t really know why they decided to give Kuruk so much screen time when it should have been given to Roku or any other character for some development, but I would say it was a decent portrayal. Just an unnecessary one.
They actually used book material for him, which is surprising given the changes they made, but it was specifically for the “spirit killing knife” which was stupid and no one can convince me otherwise.
Having spiritual conversations with so many of the past Avatar’s this early on feels like they’re going to be removing, or at least drastically changing, the Lion Turtle scene in the finale which has me very concerned.
Egregious and Potentially Detrimental Changes from the Original
Removing Jeong Jeong and Aang’s First Experience with Fire Bending
Aang’s terror of fire after hurting Katara when he got too confident is vital for his development. It’s the main reason he eventually accepts Zuko as his fire bending teacher because they both struggle with having hurt people and wanting to fix their mistakes.
This was also supposed to be Katara’s first use of healing, which again I think is something really important for us to actually see she can do. Because all they’ve said is she’s “a natural” just like everything else and that’s such bad storytelling.
Jeong Jeong is a member of the White Lotus and a really important factor in Iroh’s endeavor to take back Ba Sing Se in the finale. Could they do it without him? I guess, but it’s really disrespectful to me to just not include him.
Taking him out will affect plots all the way in season 3.
Not only that, but Jeong Jeong is a valuable example of someone born on the wrong side of the war wanting to make a difference and change his ways. It’s realistic nuance for war!
What Seeing Wan Shi Tong in the Spirit World Means to Me, the Implications for the Library, and Consequences
Wan Shi Tong, similar to Tui and La (the moon and ocean spirits), came to the physical world with the express purpose of bettering humanity. He made the personal sacrifice of staying away from the spirit world so that the human race would have access to his vast and wonderful knowledge. He couldn’t go back and forth between the physical world and the spirit world because he had to be there to keep the Library standing in the physical world in the first place, it can’t stay there without him. The fact that he’s in the spirit world, to me, means that the library may not be in the physical world at all.
Other indications that his library isn’t in the physical world are that Zhao didn’t get his knowledge of Tui and La from the library, he got it from ancient Fire Nation scrolls and records instead (which doesn’t make a lot of sense), and the sun dial that Sokka would have used to discover the solar eclipse and begin the plan for the invasion is now located in the Fire Nation instead. How is Sokka going to learn about the Day of Black Sun now for the invasion? (There’s a lot of setup for the invasion that they’ve screwed up and I’ll talk about it more in a couple other sections).
So assuming we’re no longer going to have the library, there’s a lot of follow-up implications and consequences. This means that we won’t have Appa’s kidnapping which causes a few problems.
One, Appa’s kidnapping directly leads to Jet’s death, the only major on screen death (or injury that leads to death) in the entire show. I guess you could also count Combustion Man, but Jet’s was infinitely more emotional and important to the story.
Two, Appa’s kidnapping and subsequent rescue is vital for proving to the Earth King that Long Feng is a traitor and the Dai Lee has been compromised. This leads to the Earth King trusting Team Avatar’s word implicitly about the Kyoshi Warriors which allows Azula to infiltrate, learn about the invasion plans, capture Katara, and ultimately “kill” Aang at the end of Book 2. Can the writers work around this? Probably. Do I trust them to? No.
Three, protecting Appa is how the Kyoshi Warriors get overpowered by Azula in the first place and Azula is able to infiltrate the Earth Kingdom in disguise. It’s how Suki is captured and ends up at The Boiling Rock prison.
Four, Zuko being the one to let Appa go is a massive character moment as he struggles to let go of the burdens that Ozai pushed onto him to capture the avatar at all cost to others and himself. It leads to his “metamorphosis” as Iroh calls it, leads to him giving up the Blue Spirit identity, and is what makes his later betrayal so painful. Plus, Appa likes him now which is a stepping stone later for Aang to trust him when Zuko wants to switch sides.
And five, Appa’s brief stop with the guru as he’s trying to get back to Aang leads to how Aang gets any instruction on controlling the avatar state. Which also leads to his “death” at the end of Book 2 when he tries to reopen his chakras like he was taught during the fight with Azula. Again, do I think there’s a workaround here? Yeah, but I don’t think they’ll do it well.
Where’s Haru and What it Means for the Future
Removing the “Imprisoned” storyline takes away Katara’s first and one of her most important moments of being an inspirational leader, learning how to speak up for others, and how to make connections with people outside her culture. But they’ve already stripped Katara of so much of her depth, I’m not surprised they took it out.
The more important issue is that Haru, his father, and their people (all Earth Benders) that she helped rescue were very prominent foot soldiers for the invasion in Book 3. Where are they going to get alliances to build an army against the Fire Nation now? My bet is either they won’t, which is concerning for many reasons, or it’ll happen between seasons off screen which is a massive writing problem! Vital events and plot points happening off screen shows extremely poor planning.
Indications of Removing the Swamp and More Poor Planning for the Invasion (are they cutting it out?)
I’ve pretty much convinced myself that the writers are cutting the invasion out of the plot. I’ve listed many reasons above why I think that’s the direction they’re going, but the last straw was when Sokka and Katara were in the spirit world.
I’m almost 100% sure they’re getting rid of “the Swamp”.
When Sokka and Katara are in the spirit world, they are confronted by their worst memories and most difficult emotional obstacles the same way they had been in the original when they were in the swamp. It wouldn’t make any sense to do that again, so they’re probably getting rid of the swamp entirely.
Which means Team Avatar will never encounter the Swamp Water Benders, which then means they lose even more foot soldiers and allies for the invasion. That’s two major allies that just won’t be involved. Between the potential changes to the Library, the lack of allies, and the fact that Hakoda has no trust in Sokka as a warrior, I don’t see how they’re going to realistically be able to do the invasion. If they do, I’ll be shocked and skeptical of how they manage it.
And as another personal pet peeve, taking out the swamp also removes another facet of water bending, being able to control plants by the water in them (which additionally leads into blood bending).
Other Changes That Really Bothered Me
Exposing the Genocide of Aang’s People and the Comet in Episode One
While I did appreciate (to a degree) getting to see the attack on the air benders and how the fall of the Air Nomads happened, I really don’t like that it’s the first thing we see. Like I mentioned earlier, it’s okay and often more beneficial not to reveal everything right away! I much preferred getting bits and pieces as we went along to put together the whole puzzle and have the time to process each new facet of the war. Giving it to us all at once and as the first thing we see takes away so much intricate story telling.
I really didn’t like that all of the air nomads were in the same place for the attack, that’s so unrealistic that they had to create an arbitrary festival to make it happen.
Originally, the Fire Nation attacks all four Air Temples with the power of the comet to back them up for the initial attack. It shouldn’t take one night where they’re all conveniently in the same place (except Aang) and kill them all, it should take one night to deal them such a severe blow that finishing them off over the next few years is easy. Because of course some would get away and were hunted down, that’s how war realistically works.
Removing Aang’s Crush on Katara and What it Means
Oooooh this bothers me for so many reasons, but I’ll try not to be too crazy about it.
I don’t know why they got rid of it completely, unless they’re just waiting until Aang and the actor are a little older for it to be more appropriate. But with what they did with the “Cave of Two Lovers”, I think they’re scrapping the love between Aang and Katara entirely.
Which they haven’t done anything to help them bond at all as friends in the first place except like two moments of bending instructions from Aang and a lot of dialogue about how they’re family. Aang and Sokka have had way more bonding moments together, I can believe they’re friends at least.
One of the biggest issues will be, if they somehow manage to trick Netflix into letting them adapt Korra as well, Aang and Katara’s kids and grandkids are fundamental to the plot there. But that’s getting way ahead of ourselves, let’s just focus on ATLA.
Aang’s feelings for Katara are very important, particularly for being the sole reason he stops trying to master the avatar state, only to attempt it again later to protect her, and then he ends up “dead” for it. He admits to loving her out right in those episodes.
The thing about Avatar is almost every detail is valuable in some way and dominos into a larger plot point. Their love for each other isn’t a major focal point of the show but it does matter, I just really hope they’re not planning on changing love interests.
Moving Anything from Other Seasons into Season One
I’m not going to spend a lot of time on this, but bringing anything from other seasons into season one when you already have such limited time is really irritating because that time would have been better spent on actual character development or including more vital points from season one.
Changing Lore
Aang accidentally bringing both Sokka and Katara into the spirit world with him just because they were in close proximity is ridiculous. He shouldn’t be able to do that. It makes much more sense that they’d be stolen by Hei Bai than piggybacking off Aang when neither of them are spiritually inclined.
Making Avatar shrines the only way for Aang to access his previous avatar is so limiting and irritating, he gets better at it as he becomes more spiritually connected to the avatar state (like in the ocean during the first episode of Book 3 when Aang contacts Roku, or on the Lion Turtle when Aang contacts four past Avatars). Also they completely contradict this rule letter in the season when Aang sees Avatar Kuruk for a few seconds just outside in the Northern Water Tribe. Like they specifically said it, and then completely contradicts themselves, that’s a pretty big consistency error when it’s a change they made.
They removed any significances of the solstices. Once again, giving us no timeline or indication of time passing in the world.
The reason Roku is able to control Aang’s body and powers as much as he can in the Fire Nation Temple is because of the winter solstice when the veil between spirit and physical world is thinnest. But now any Avatar can do it as long as Aang connects with them at their shrine. Kyoshi should not have been to do that to him and it replaced Roku’s very profound moment at the temple.
I don’t like that they said Tui and La are only in physical form one night a year (I think that’s what Zhao said, or something about an ice moon, whatever), and then that night just happened to be near. I can’t think of a single reason why they would make that change. There’s just too many convenient coincidences happening in this version of the story. Tui and La specifically gave up their spiritual forms for vulnerable physical forms for a reason, learn the lore!
The special spirit killing knife was stupid. I don’t know if it’s in the novels and I missed it or if the writers (more likely) came up with it, but it’s seems like really convenient and silly lore that actively contradicts a lot of what was originally set up about the spirits. And added a lot of unnecessary exposition that didn’t even tell us how Zhao got it.
In another similar vein, the MacGuffin of the statue of the many faces goddess spirit that Aang took from Roku’s artifacts to save Katara and Sokka from Kho was just so weird to me. He just eats people now? What happened to him stealing faces if you show an emotion? That was what made him so terrifying, and it was just another moment they stole from Aang and showcasing his potential. It wasn’t his negotiation skills or his self control that saved his friends, but a very convenient object just sitting on a shelf waiting for him.
None of their lore changes made sense or had a purpose to me other than to arbitrarily be different from the source material.
Mature ≠ Graphic
The writers said repeatedly in interviews and articles that they wanted this live action adaptation to essentially be a more mature version. They even likened their vision to be something similar enough to appeal to Game of Thrones fans, which to me was a massive red flag going into the show. Please, do not mix up maturity and graphic violence.
The only thing more “mature” about the live action is that we actually see people being burned alive and killed throughout the season. The original has far more mature writing because of how delicately and intricately it handles very serious concepts. The Netflix writers either do not trust audiences to pick up on subtle and complex ideas, do not trust the actors to portray subtle and complex ideas, or they do not know how to write subtle and complex ideas. Or some combination of the three. Everything is exposition, which I’ve said so many times before, but I will keep saying it until they learn not shove plot right in our faces with no nuance.
The writers simply think they’ve created something more mature because it’s sometimes violent and not a cartoon, which isn’t how that works.
It’s not mature, it’s graphic. Know the difference and you’ll be a better writer for it!
Humor
Yes the humor in the original leans a little more childish, but you don’t solve that by stripping the humor entirely in the adaptation! Almost any attempt at humor, to me, felt like an after thought and was mostly misplaced in a scene (like with Roku, I’ll never get over that). Just overall lost a lot of the whimsy. I understand that animation lends itself to way more expressive, cartoonish, and childish humor, but there’s plenty of funny live-action films and shows. Why did it have to take such a back seat? Again, that’s not a sign of maturity, it’s a sign of a very surface level understanding of how writing works and of what the original ATLA had to offer.
What Was The Point and What Could They Have Done Instead (imo)?
Being brutally honest here, I really don’t think there was any point to making this live action adaptation, especially with the limitations they put on themselves. I think it was, overall, a waste of money and resources. In theory, it was really exciting to have the opportunity to see the world come to life. And in a lot of ways I think they accomplished that between the location designs, costumes, respectful and accurate casting, and environments. I just think that was their main focus, making it look right, that the writing took an unfortunate back seat that made the whole show suffer.
There are two directions I think they could have taken instead.
One, I think they should have planned for six seasons. Every book of the original has a roughly mid season event that could act as really solid season finales. They would be able to stretch out the story and not compress or rush their writing so much. It would be structured more like this:
Season 1 Finale - The Winter Solstice and Discovery of Sozin’s Comet
Season 2 Finale - The Siege of the North
Season 3 Finale - Getting to Ba Sing Se and The Drill
Season 4 Finale - Aang’s “Death”
Season 5 Finale - The Day of Black Sun Invasion
Season 6 Finale - Sozin’s Comet and Confronting the Fire Lord
I understand that doing this doubles the length, and subsequently the cost of the show, which is a big ask. But I also think if they don’t have the resources to do it right in the first place, then they shouldn’t have done it at all. Is it better than the 2010 version we got from Shyamalan? Of course, but please allow yourself to have higher standards than literally scraping by the bottom of the barrel of quality.
I don’t expect anyone to have as in depth opinions or critiques as me, and I don’t begrudge anyone for enjoying the show or even liking some of the changes! But I will say that we all, no matter how critical a viewer you are, deserve better than mediocre quality.
The second direction I think they could have taken, and I really think they should have, is to write something completely original within the world setting of Avatar. There are quite literally dozens of avatars that existed before Aang that have no story yet! They had an opportunity to write some original that actually fits into the 8 episode limit they had while also further expanding on the history and world we all love so much.
I just think the audience, that mostly consists of fans of the original, would have been far more accepting and open to an original story rather than a middling attempt at retelling a story that’s already so beloved.
If you made it this far, I am extremely impressed and also worried for your health! This was mostly me needing to get all of these thoughts and critiques out of my head without ranting to friends and family that have no idea what I’m talking about and would get annoyed.
Anyway, that is my very extensive review that nobody asked for! If you need clarification or further analysis on anything I said, or if there’s something I missed that’s a critique for you on the live action, or if there’s anything you disagree with that I’ve said, please let me know in the comments below! But be nice, I will block anyone being mean about people opinions or thoughts. This is an open friendly space, I won’t tolerate bullying.
Thank you for probably far too much of your time!

Learn from my mistakes
Entry Level Finance Associate Edition ✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This past year has taught me so much about myself. I bumped my head so many times. However, this has shaped the professional I am today. Here are some topics I had to learn the hard way.
Tumblr media
First and fore most write everything down
You will have a lot of information thrown at you and it’s nearly impossible to retain it if you don't write it down. It’s also proven that writing things down is beneficial.
It helps you to process and clarify your thoughts.
It frees up your mind to create more ideas.
Provides a foundation of knowledge that can be built upon.
Helps with forgetfulness, you can access the information when you need it and you don’t have to remember it.
Practice active communication
Give your manager an update before they ask you for one.
Keep up with your email - it’s not fun if people have to track you down. Everyone’s time is important.
Figure out a method to keep up with your emails. I personally practice inbox zero and I work out of my flagged emails folder. More information here.
Seek outside educational sources
Book knowledge will only get you so far.
Don’t be afraid to google things. I bet money your superiors still do it.
Take LinkedIn Learning courses in areas that you lack. - I took a few, how-to-take effective meeting notes, business communications foundation and how to think strategically.
Stay up to date with Finance trends and emerging regulations.
If your employer provides outside resources, take advantage of them! They are there for you for free!
Run your own race
Everyone brings something unique to the table. Try to find out what you bring.
I don’t shy away from responsibility. I'm an extremely hard worker and if you drop something on my desk, I will figure it out.
Remember you are enough and you contribute something valuable to your team.
Get organized!
Here’s my post on my organization system. Extra tips include:
Learn to wrap up your day - Meaning make a habit of shutting down your computer everyday. This forces you to wrap up items you are in progress of and helps you to keep track of them. It also feels good to be able to start your day fresh.
Get a planner - Physical or digital whatever your preference is. Get into the habit of using it every day to log important dates and tasks.
Keep you calendar updated - You don’t want to miss important meetings.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
They do not expect you to know everything. In fact they expect you to know the bare minimum.
Ask questions, but try not to ask the same question over and over.
Get Grammarly Premium!!!
This has saved my life and lifted so much stress off my shoulders. No more am I spending the entire day working on an email and second-guessing myself. I run everything through Grammarly before I send out anything and save so much time.
Closing
If no one has told you today, you are amazing, and you are capable of fantastic things! Once you get the basics down, you will be unstoppable. 😉
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. This year, I felt I had no one to go to because I was the only black girl on my team, and we were very scarce in the Finance department. We can all win together.🤞🏾

Tumblr media
Another day at Vought INC, you were sitting in your office writing up a storm in a document. You worked in the PR team for Vought superheroes.
Today was an especially hard day.
First, wake up late because of your alarm clock, then your phone is not even fucking charging.
Then if that wasn't good enough, being late to the train and then walking to work in heels that were 30 mins away. Then coming back to this hellhole for your boss to give you a horrible time at work.
As you were here fucking slaving away on your computer, your thought running around your head, it was hard to come with the concept for that experiment that you call heroes.
Not that you had any aggression with any of the superheroes except with The deep, translucent, and demon you call America's golden boy, Homelander. As you were typing on your computer in your small office, your boss walked up to you, clicking her heels annoying; not like you had an anger issue, but when you saw her, everything in your body rang anger.
"Y/N, your last idea was interesting, needless to say. I don't think that having Queen Maeve and Starlight helping out, survivors of Cyclone Idai, wouldn't be a good pitch. Think, Feminism, think two women showing the world that women can do anything." she slams the paper you worked hard on onto your desk, tapping down on the paper.
"What do you mean?" you responded to her interesting comments.
"What I said, a feminist is the topic" she exaggerate her hands and clasped her hand.
"Sure," your eyes twitched as you picked up the paper she placed on the desk.
As she walked out of your office, she yelled out, "-And make sure it is good this time!" the final comment made you crush the paper in your hand and throw it on the wall.
"What the hell does feminism do with superheroes" you mumbled yourself. Swiping a piece of your hair to the side of your ears, moving closer to the computer, and thinking about some ideas. Needless you say, you were fricking annoyed by the comments your boss said.
Bite at your lip, till it drew some blood. It was getting tiring, trying to live a normal life, was tiring, you thought of your choices when you were 12 between staying in the lab or escaping, but you glad that you are able to escape that hellhole than being monitored for 24 hrs, and ending to be doll being on display.
But ironic that you landed a job at the same brand you escaped. You wanted a breather from being locked up in your small office; besides that, your break was coming in, standing up and stretching your neck and your body. Walking out of your office, going to the elevator.
As you were walking down, getting pushed by two dickhead of Vought employees, they responded by saying to watch where you were walking.
The disrespect you were getting from this company was crazy. While you enter the elevator, pressing the 25th floor, where the company Starbucks was, you need some Caffeine to boost your mood and energy, even though Dunkin Donuts was better than the overpriced coffee store.
Standing the side of the elevator lending to the walls, as you scrolled on your phone while the elevator was going down. the elevator music chiming in.
Your eyes was still laid on your phone, you didn't notice the person that came into the elevator, not taking your eyes on off, until your eyes look at the familiar cape, it was red, white and blue.
Making quick eye contact with the person you dread meeting on top of that, Homelander.
But out of all the elevators in the building, why the heck would he take the elevator taken by lowly Vought employees? Getting off the wall, straightening yourself up.
He walked in with his hand behind his back.
The music chimed in and played through; your body was tense by his immediate presence, and the elevator door closed.
You wished that the elevator would go faster as you stared at the floor indicator with the lowering numbers of the floor going down. You should help it, but your heart was pumping out of your chest.
"So, I heard you got a promotion, Y/N." the comment he said caught you off guard, 'The Fuck' and you just stared at him.
Besides the point, he said that, your promotion was literally 6 months ago.
"Quiet, aren't we?" he looked you in the eye, and you soon pulled away.
"Thank you, Sir," you responded, not bothering to correct him. Now you were begging that time would go faster, biting down on your lip.
The elevator so coming down to the 25th floor, and he soon slapped his arm on the control panel breaking it and catching himself off caught.
Faster than you can even react, he grabbed your neck, pinning you to the elevator wall, leaving you shocked to even react.
An ominous chuckle erupted from him, "You honestly got everyone else fooled, but not me at all, Y/N."
You were scared for your life inside that elevator, there nobody here, and there was no one to hear you scream at all. "W-what, do you mean" you stared at him, your legs were trembling.
"Your not normal at all, you're more than having a lowly lifestyle. You are a god like me" he grabs your face and squishes it.
You help but stare at him; you have a hard time responding to him; even if you tried doing something, your chances of being slayed by him would be high.
"What?" the word slipped out of your mouth, you were wondering how he know, but I guess you can't hide anything from Homelander; if you were to lie, you would probably just die right there.
"Don't fuck with me, Y/N." he barked at you, his hand breaking inside the elevator wall. Your eyes felt wet, and tears were escaping you. Your lips were trembling.
"Don't fucking turn soft on me now." He yelled at you, "Just admit it, don't lie to me."
"O-okay, I am one" you mumbled, he released his grip on you and pressed the button on the elevator panel, as he stood away from you in his original spot.
You fell down on the floor, breathing heavily, as you put your face in your hand.
The elevator door opened, "Cut that crying crap up; it not working on me at all," he mumbled as he exited the elevator, with his hand behind his back in a military position.
The feeling of getting to Starbucks left your mind; the only thing you could hear in the elevator was music as the elevator closed; you just wanted to get out of this building.
Tumblr media
Walking out of the tall building, it was accordingly 8:45 pm when you exited the building. Unfornutaly for you, your day was only getting worse; it started raining on you, soon drenching your body in water.
'Just my day..' you mumbled out
A terrific day for you since it was just sunny outside, and you didn't bother to bring one of your jackets with you, but that's just New York weather. Grabbing your bag and using it as a protection shield for your head, you ran to the train station to catch it from its left.
Entering the station, your body was drenched in water head to toe; as the sound of your soaking wet clothes made a 'plop' sound, you moved to the scanner, swiping your MetroCard into it. The gate opening allows you to enter the waiting area of the train.
The screeching sound of the train came halting at the station. The door opened, allowing the people inside to get out; you grabbed your stuff and entered as you sat down, waiting for your stop.
30 MINUTES LATER
Lucky for you, the rain wasn't as bad when you exited work. You were walking to your apartment complex; your clothes were less drenched than before but still had some moister.
It got way darker than before; you were walking down the street. You live a little far away from the Vought building, and you usually take some shortcuts to make your journey less. As you looked in the alleyway, you dismissed the idea from your mind, the time for using a shortcut was way too risky.
"HEY, LADY!" a masculine voice yelled, ringing in your ears.
"Just my luck," you muttered as you turned to the voice. "Give me all your money," the mysterious man said, holding a pocket knife and wearing all black.
"No," you responded to him.
"Do you want to die right now? Just give me your fucking purse, or I'll stab you in the fucking neck," he yelled, walking towards you.
"Maybe, but do you know what is even better than money" you walked towards the mysterious figure, throwing your bag onto the floor.
"Your life," you made a gun sign with one of your men and pointed towards him "bang" soon, the man's chest, stomach, and abdomen area were blasted off and sprayed on the wall. His head had a confused expression, and as his head landed on the floor, his legs fell down as well. It was a pure, clean cut; his organ was destroyed by the blast, and the red liquid was everywhere on the street.
His blood was sprayed on some of your clothes as you grabbed your bag from the dirty floor and walked away from the massacre of the man's body.
You didn't know it, but someone was following you as he popped out from his invisible trick. Translucent face had a scared expression etched on it as he looked at the gory display on the floor. The mysterious man's blood trickled down the street to the road.
"What the hell" he covered his mouth at the killing. Pulling out his mouth, testing the head of the seven, a message saying, "It 's the real deal."

What do you think they (kyoraki, ukitake, byakuya and grimmjow) would do or say when they are feeling like they are losing you and they think you no longer love them as much, maybe because of their position as captains they work too much , they say the wrong things , they don't know how to express their feeling right, etc.
Hi🤗
It seems an interesting and also "realistic" request since being a captain involves a lot of effort and sometimes it can happen that they don't feel as connected to their s/o as they would like.
I brought some headcanons about the topic I hope you like it😊
____________________________________________
Tumblr media
Shunsui :
He had become the commanding captain since Yamamoto's death.
He had never even thought of being his successor but there was no choice.
You and him were already together even before he took over this place and you were always by his side especially now when he needed you so much.
He sometimes felt sad that he didn't pay enough attention to you and didn't have time to be with you and was afraid that this could affect your relationship.
He then decided to talk to you and apologize for not always being able to be there but that he would never turn his back on you no matter how far apart you two are.
He was probably going to ask you if your feelings for him were still the same after all and you looked at him smiling
"Of course my lovely Shunsui, I know you must be busy because the future of Gotei 13 and Seireitei is now in your hands and you are doing an excellent job, don't worry about me"
He felt very relieved after hearing words from him.
Tumblr media
Ukitake :
You and Ukitake were always very close to each other.
He admired you a lot but there were two things that often prevented him from being with you: his position as captain and his illness.
He sometimes felt that he wasn't enough because he couldn't be someone more present in your life or because he thought he couldn't be what you wanted him to be.
And when it wasn't the illness it was the frequent meetings between him and the other captains and he felt very distanced from you.
You used to take care of him when he was bad and when he was good you still took care of him because you promised that you would stay by his side through everything.
One of the times you were taking care of him, he said you deserved better because you are an amazing person who didn't deserve to go through this.
"Ukitake, I don't care. Your illness or your position is no reason for me to walk away from you. I'm here for the love I feel for you. I love you and I will never give up on you, so please don't give up on me or doubt my feelings please"
He felt so loved by your sweet words and thanked you for taking such good care of him.
Tumblr media
Byakuya :
This man is very serious when it comes to his work but we also know that he cares deeply for those he loves even though he tries to hide it.
He always treasured every moment with you because he always had a lot of things to do and that's why it was hard to be with you.
He was always very responsible and never let paperwork pile up.
He also felt bad about not being there for you and often said he needed some time alone to organize things well so he could also have some time to breathe and you always respected his decisions.
He knew walking away from you could be painful but he had to.
"Y/n I hope you understand why I ask you for some time alone I really need some peace although it pains me to ask you for this"
"I love you and I will always respect your decisions. You can always trust me, I will never let you down. Even though I am far from you, I will always fulfill my duties"
He knew he could count on you for everything and that's why he chose you.
Tumblr media
Grimmjow :
With grimmjow things are different because they involve different reasons.
With grimmjow it can be a bit more touchy since he has always lived a life alone and never had much time or anyone to relate to.
He never knew many things about love and it was difficult for him in the beginning to relate to you.
He liked you even though you had that strong, cocky personality. He only had doubts and fear of not being able to love you correctly.
He often asked you why you chose him when you could have found someone better.
"I could even get someone else who understands better about love but I wouldn't like her as much as I like you. I'm here to teach you everything. You don't need to love the same way as other people just love me as you know and I'll always be here don't worry" - you said
He looked at you for a moment but just dropped his head and looked away.
He loved you and you knew.

PART 4: THE RETURN
Tumblr media
Secondo x GN Reader
content: 1.5k words || criminal au, drama, feelings
!! things aren't described very graphically but the topics can be disturbing so 18+ is valid, i guess. !!
summary: ”I felt like I still have something to give to you. In more ways than one.”
We're getting closer to the end... This one and the last one were my fave parts to write. Lots of feelings, so... 😁 Hope you like this!
Tumblr media
You were gone for a month. You needed some time for yourself so you could think it all through and clear your head. Everything had gone so fast and while you had known that this kind of life had its dangers, nothing had prepared you for this. That you would end up hurt.
You could have died, you knew that. If Secondo had not been there… It was hard to even think that now you could be dead, lying in the morgue. The thought made your stomach turn unpleasantly and you just shook it out of your head.
On the first week you just stayed at home, did some work, the basic household chores and slept as much as you could. Everything that was normal. The wound in your shoulder was starting to heal, though it was still sore and you did your best at ignoring the pain.
You got the first message from Copia on the second week and it made your heart ache. You read the message over and over again but didn’t reply. It was too soon. You appreciated his concern but now you needed to keep a distance, so you just continued living, focusing on the things that you liked to do.
However, the messages didn’t stop – you got more and the ache in your heart only grew. A part of you started to feel bad that you had just left but it was the best thing you could do in that situation. You had to find out what you really wanted. And as you had read the messages from Copia, you noticed that a part of you wanted to return to the brothers. While you might not admit it out loud, you were kind of grown fond of them during the months you had been working for them.
It all got a confirmation during the fourth week. You finally replied Copia and told that you were fine. The feeling within you was now more clear, calmer, and you had pretty much made up your mind. You listened to your gut, maybe even heart, and eventually you found your way back to the base.
Tumblr media
”You should have seen him when we told that you had left,” Primo said to you as you were on his room, preparing some medical stuff. You were grateful that he had tended you after the shooting – the wound was now pretty much healed, though there surely would be a scar left of the incident.
”Oh?” you said, raising your brows, curious to hear more about the matter.
”I don’t remember when he was like that last time. It’s probably been years,” Primo told, organizing some medicine bottles to the small locker. ”He was… afraid.”
”Of what?”
”That you wouldn’t come back. Believe or not, he seems to have a soft spot for you,” Primo answered, a small smile on his lips.
”Secondo… Really?”
Secondo had apparently been acting dfferently after you had left and you kind of understood why – he had saved your life after all. But there seemed to be something else, too. You knew Primo, Terzo and Copia cared about you in their own, more open, way but when it came to Secondo, it had been different. He was still mostly a mystery to you, but he wasn’t a heartless man. He cared, he was just more guarded and you could guess that there was a good reason for that.
”Yes,” Primo said, his expression soft. ”It might not be obvious to outsiders but we know him and we know when someone has gotten under his skin. And for some reason, you have.”
You hummed, not sure what to say. However, you didn’t miss the way your heart jolted in your chest as you thought about Secondo and the moments you had shared with him. There weren’t that many but even those few had made you feel… like there was some sort of unvoiced understanding between you. And then there was the mysterious pull, curiosity and warmth that mixed within you when you shared a space with him.
”I’m not sure if I should feel special or be scared,” you stated, making Primo laugh a little.
”That’s something you need to find out yourself.”
Tumblr media
After you had finished helping Primo with his medical supplies, Copia had asked you if you could show him some programming tricks and you had agreed. It wasn’t the first time you had done so, and you gladly helped him. He mastered pretty basic skills and was keen to learn some more complex stuff. It was nice that you two could bond over the same interest and you laughed and joked as Copia messed up several times while trying to write the code.
You had no idea how much time had passed but when you heard the familiar voice from behind you, you stopped right in your tracks, your heart missing a beat.
”You came back.”
Slowly you turned the chair you were sitting on towards Secondo. Copia mumbled something beside you but your brain couldn’t register that as your gaze met Secondo’s.
There it was in his eyes – the surprise, disbelief, even… relief. You drew in a shaky breath, your heart beating against your sternum.
”Yeah,” you managed to breath out, slowly standing up. Secondo walked over to you, his eyes never leaving yours, and then he cupped your face, the gesture taking you aback. It was… intimate in a way, and you were completely frozen in place, staring at Secondo with wide eyes. Every emotion within you seemed to roll around but one thing was sure, no matter how crazy it might have sounded – you were happy to see him.
”I thought you wouldn’t come back,” Secondo spoke, voice undeniably soft this time, and you felt the tiniest of tug in your heartstrings.
A small smile rose to your lips.
”I’m here now.”
And then Secondo was smiling – like properly smiling – and you were stunned. That was the first time when you actually saw a genuine smile on the man’s lips and this all was getting kind of overwhelming.
”Uh, you look like you need a moment, so…” you heard Copia speaking and saw some movement in the corner of your eye. ”I leave you to it.”
There was a sound of door closing soon and then it was only you and Secondo left. Well, Primo was in his medical room, so technically it was only the two of you in there. Copia’s exit had broken a moment a bit and Secondo dropped his hands to his sides, still smiling, though. You immediately missed the touch but brushed that feeling off quickly. You shifted, your hand instinctively going onto the shoulder that was injured. Secondo noticed that, his smile fading.
”How is it?”
”Healed pretty much,” you replied.
Secondo gave you a small nod.
”Good.”
Silence fell between you for a moment – you didn’t know what to do or say. Memories of the last mission went through your head, just like they had done several times for the past month. You had tried to remember where it all went wrong but it all had happened so fast it was impossible to tell. Maybe it would have been avoided or maybe not – it didn’t really matter. You were still very much alive and the man that had saved you was standing there in front of you.
”Thank you,” you said quietly. ”For saving me.”
The look in Secondo’s eyes changed quickly from relief to… pain. Or something close to that, you couldn’t quite tell.
”Anyone would have done that in that situation,” Secondo said, clearly trying to downplay his actions.
”No, I don’t think so,” you stated, shaking your head a little. ”Someone would have let me take the bullet where it was originally going to go.”
Secondo let out a sigh, probably knowing he couldn’t argue with that.
”But it shouldn’t have happened in the first place. We had a plan and it was supposed to work,” he said, the tone of his voice getting sharper. So he felt responsible for that incident and was angry, disappointed at himself.
”It’s alright, I don’t blame you or your brothers,” you tried to ease Secondo’s inner conflict. ”And besides, you all have said that this kind of life is unpredictable sometimes. Missions go wrong, people get wounded and killed. Hell, you can even be run over by a car in your normal life.”
Secondo let out a noise that resembled a laugh and you flashed him a smile. You took a half a step closer to him, hesitantly placing your hand on Secondo’s chest, right where his heart was. Secondo breathed slowly in and out, his gaze scanning your face.
”Why did you come back?”
Sighing you tapped Secondo’s chest, his brows furrowing slightly at that. You could have told him about how much thinking you had done in the past month and so on but you decided to straighten a few curves.
”I felt like I still have something to give to you. In more ways than one.”
With that you stepped aside and walked past Secondo, intending to leave him think about your words. And just after opening the door, you made a short stop, voicing more of your feelings.
”It’s good to be back.”

[CN] MLQC Lucien's Through Thousands of Mirrors event translation (Day 1 -Thursday)
⚠️ SPOILER ALERT ⚠️
This post contains a HEAVY SPOILER for the event that has not been released in EN yet! Feel free to notify me if there are any mistakes in the translation~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through Thousands of Mirrors Event | Day 1 (You're here!) | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7 | HS/Uni SSR Story: Monochrome Scenery
Tumblr media
-
[Tidbits: I don't wanna break the flow so I'll put some information here first 😂. Dr. Lawson is Lucien's post-grad professor. Before, he also appears in UR MQ Distant Similarity. During his post-grad he has three seniors Colt, Elliot, and Caroline.]
-
[Math]
Tumblr media
Seeing the particularly puzzled expression on the classmate next to him, Lucien starts to consider whether he should offer some assistance within his capabilities.
For instance, he thinks about telling the classmate that the topic currently being discussed on the blackboard is not from the same chapter as the one in the textbook he's currently reading.
-
[MATH/BIOCHEMISTRY]
Tumblr media
After the vending machine devours Lucien's one dollar and twenty-five cents for the third time, and with only three minutes left to get to his next class, he begins to seriously contemplate whether he should try some mysterious repair method—like giving it a good smack or a swift kick.
-
[BIOCHEMISTRY]
Tumblr media
Lucien coincidentally runs into Colt by the sports field, just as Colt is about to attend a cricket practice session.
Upon realizing that his senior from the lab is not only managing coursework and a significant project workload but also juggling a 20-hour weekly part-time job and daily school cricket team training, Lucien begins to contemplate whether there is any room for further optimization in his own schedule.
-
[PREVIEW/COMPUTER SCIENCE]
Tumblr media
During the brief half-hour period, Lucien typically uses the time to prepare for the upcoming class or visit the library to research and gather information.
In any case, that time should not be spent on arguing and explaining to people, like the enthusiastic campus volunteer in front of him.
"No, thank you. I'm not a high school student attending a summer camp. This is my student ID, and I'm indeed a student here, a graduate student. Yes, I'm not lost, and I need to get to my class. Can you please let me go?"
-
[COMPUTER SCIENCE]
Lucien presses the enter key, intending to ask the teacher if he can leave early once his coursework is done. However, the error message on the screen deters him from that thought. So, he sits back down and begins to examine it again.
But that's okay, he does understand the commonality between computer science and experimental research: it's often hard to know right away if the thing at hand will work, why it's not working, or even why it's even working.
-
[LAB]
Come on, come on, come on. After moving this box, there's another.
And after moving that box, there are three more to go.
The prospects for the future and the shine in one's eyes are often taken away by the God of research in such necessary yet mechanical repetitive work.
-
[LAB]
Lucien goes out to get some water and returns to find a school burger on his desk.
Colt, with dark circles under his eyes, waves at Lucien and saying, "No need to thank me, newcomer. Have some food, we might be staying here today."
Lucien quietly eats the burger, hesitant to tell Colt that he has spent more time in the laboratory than in the dorm.
-
[LAB]
Tumblr media
When Dr. Lawson enters the laboratory, what he sees is a scene where his graduate and doctoral students are sleeping and sprawled all over the place.
On the laboratory whiteboard, several words were written in large letters: "Publish immediately! Guaranteed to be published in Nature!!"
Dr. Lawson retrieves small blankets from the cabinet, covering each of these research madmen.
He proceeds to organize the data and take over the finishing work on the project. Of course, when it comes to authorship in the paper, not a single one of these kids' names can be left out.

A sugared birthday.
Birthday special. pt. (2/2).
The special gift - nsfw (minors dni).
Lightly inspired by the story event “dancing queen” from his birthday event. This got longer than I thought it would.
Tumblr media
A few days have gone by since the meeting I had with the warlords from Kasugayama, ever since then we were all preparing for Shingen’s birthday in secret. Kenshin and Yukimura would be responsible for organizing the party, Sasuke was in charge of making sure Kenshin wouldn’t go overboard with ordering the sake. He also volunteered to enhance the security of the castle, although I doubt anyone would try harming Shingen, it was better to be sure rather than sorry.
Yoshimoto would be helping me practice for my personal gift to Shingen, since it was mostly his idea. And besides, he is very knowledgeable about art and beauty, specially about Shingen’s preferences. If I really was going to pretend to be a celestial maiden, I would need to know how to act and move, what expressions I should make while talking to him etc. to make everything more immersive.
But learning how to act like a celestial maiden would soon be proven to be a difficult task.
“Not like that, you will knock the cup down if you move your hand like that.” Yoshimoto’s voice carried a sigh, he was being patient as he taught me how to act gracefully. His hands held mine and gently fixed its position, as well as fixing the sleeve from the robe.
“I am sorry, but it’s hard moving gracefully with this. The wings get in the way of my movements.” The robe i would be using for the acting was almost done, missing just a few final touches that would make it look heavenly. But I still needed to learn how to move on it.
“Practice and time will help you, you must stay calm and pay attention to every movement you make. As long as you keep your mind focused, the sleeves and wings won’t get in your way. Besides, I predict you won’t be using the robe for long.” His comment made me blush, sometimes I forget how casually Yoshimoto’s words may sound.
“A-anyway, what else should I do?” Trying to change the topic, I turned to him with that question. I wasn’t confident that the acting would last for very long, eventually i would just fall back into being myself.
“Like I said, it would be good to pour sake for him, as well as feed him the sweets yourself. You won’t have to do much.” He moved away, letting me go back to practice pouring sake elegantly. I focused, like he said, on the position my fingers were around the bottle of sake, how my arms moved as a tilted it over the cup.
I suddenly felt his finger touch between my eyebrows, rubbing the area lightly “don’t frown while you concentrate. While it’s cute, a celestial maiden would keep a serene and calm expression.”
“Got it!” Despite agreeing with him, I believe it would take a lot of effort to control my face. If it is for shingen, I should do my best.
“I believe that’s enough for today, you should try practicing in front of a mirror to help you know what expression you should make. Go rest now, otherwise my cousin will be looking for you.” Yoshimoto patted my shoulder, gracefully getting up to leave the room, as a way to give me privacy to change my clothes. I put the bottle of sake down on the table, feeling my muscles relax.
“Thank you for helping me with this, it means a lot to be able to do this for his birthday.” I showed my gratitude to him before he could slide the door open. Yoshimoto stopped for a few seconds before turning to me with a smile.
“If it’s for my cousin, I will gladly help. We will meet again tomorrow.” With that, Yoshimoto left the room. Despite the fact that he told me to rest for now, I kept practicing in that room for another hour or so. While it’s true that I am pushing my limits, I didn’t want to do a sloppy job while acting on his birthday. After I was tired to the point where my muscles were sore from forcing elegant movements, I decided to take a rest, for real this time.
It might not look like at first, but making graceful movements took a lot of effort, my arms hurted a bit. I took off the robe carefully and put my regular kimono back on, leaving the room with the robes carefully wrapped on my arms.
The room in question was in an inn we rented to use as a practice room. Every day we would meet here so that I could train my acting and perfect it. Shingen noticed I am going out frequently, so I had to use the excuse that I was going out to shop for his birthday party. I hope he doesn’t get too suspicious, though I think he knows something is going on.
Sasuke once mentioned that I give things away too easily through my expressions, which was something I was clueless to. Huh, perhaps I should work on that.
—————
The moment I stepped inside the castle, I noticed an abundance of people walking through the halls in a hurry, carrying what i would assume to be the decorations for the party. Wow, Yukimura and Kenshin really went all out on organizing the banquet, though i can only imagine the conflict those two must have had preparing everything together.
It was already close to dusk, the sky was tinged by a mix of purple and yellow. I should be getting back to the bedroom shingen and I share, otherwise he might get find my lateness strange. But before that…
The robe.
The seamstresses aren’t done finishing the robe, they only allowed me to borrow it for the practice. I should return it to them before I go back, i hugged the wrapped robe against my chest, trying to make it less noticeable as I made my way to return it. Even though the others wouldn’t find it suspicious, I wanted to keep the costume as secret as possible.
Once I had returned it, I was finally able to go rest in my bedroom. I let out a sigh of relief as I reached the door, I really miss the covers of the futon right now. As I slide the door open, two strong arms pull me inside, sliding the door shut once I was pulled flush into a sturdy chest.
I felt embarrassed by the little ‘yep!’ I let out, my arms instantly wrapping around the torso of the person who pulled me, since I knew exactly who it was.
“My goddess finally returns to my arms, illuminating my night with her glow.” That honeyed voice was enough to make me melt, I snuggled up at him while looking up.
“You shouldn’t surprise me like this, one of these days I might hit you.” Which could very well happen, what if it was a kidnapper? Or perhaps an intruder? I doubt i would actually hurt him, but i would prefer to avoid such a scenario.
His laugh filled the room, there was a twinkle of mischief in his gray eyes. I could visibly see his shoulders shaking a little. “I suppose I will deserve that. This lowly mortal accepts his goddess’ wrath.”
“You are being awfully theatrical today, did something get you in a good mood?” While it’s true that he is a flirt, he isn’t usually this… honeyed.
“On to me, aren’t you? I have heard from a certain someone that I might get a very special gift.” Oh. Oh no! How could he know? Did one of his ninjas investigate us and figured out what we were planning?
Before I could panic, I felt his warm hand over my cheek, his thumb caressing my skin. “Don’t worry, I don’t know much. I asked Yuki if there was something going on for you to be going out every day to the market. He ended up telling me that you must be preparing something for me.”
Of course it was Yukimura… though, I can’t blame him completely, he probably had to say something to shingen so that he wouldn’t investigate us, which would end up ruining the surprise.
Still, I will kick his knees for this.
“Well… that’s all you will be able to know for now. This is a surprise, you know?” I placed my hands over my hips, shooting a scolding gaze at him.
“Alright, very well. I will content myself with this little knowledge to keep my wife happy.” I smile at that, at least I know he wouldn’t want to ruin his surprise. “But-“
“W-woah!” I wrapped my arms around his neck on impulse as I felt him lifting my up in his strong arms, carrying me towards our futon.
“To distract myself from trying to find out this secret you are keeping, I will be demanding something else.” His face was close to mine, a sweet yet dark smile on his face.
I gulped lightly, knowing I wouldn’t be getting any sleep tonight. Hopefully I will still be able to walk well tomorrow for practice.
—————
On the night of December 1st…
The day had started a bit hectic, everyone had to get up early to prepare the castle for the party. Shingen would be distracted with his work, he insisted that he shouldn’t neglect his duties just because it’s his birthday, specially not when the weather was getting terribly cold. He had his people to look after. Yukimura scolded him, saying he should get more rest during his birthday, but shingen gave him a simple answer.
‘I should prioritize the well-being of those under my protection, my birthday isn’t more important than the life of others’
While I did worry about shingen working to the point of exhaustion, I also understood that he couldn’t just take a break, even if it was for a day. Besides, I believe that both the banquet and my gift to him will be of great enjoyment. With shingen distracted with work, the others and I had time to set everything up for his birthday.
Currently, the others will drag shingen to the main hall so that he can enjoy the feast, talk with his old friends and drink. Meanwhile, I would be getting ready to act. Yoshimoto ordered two maids to help me into the finished costume, the table with sake and sweets was already prepared. All I had to do was wait for them to send shingen here for my part of the gift.
I just hope I can do everything perfectly.
Some time had passed, I was sitting perfectly straight with my hands over my legs. I knew it would take a while, but my knees are starting to ache from staying in this position. And I was getting hungry…
I wish I could have joined the banquet, but the idea was to keep me hidden until it was time for him to come. I heard my stomach grumbling at the thought of all the food that would be present at the party.
Maybe a little bite of the sweets wouldn’t hurt… I reached out to take a chestnut bun, biting a small piece of it. However, I was caught by surprise when the door suddenly opened as I was mid-biting into a sweet bun.
“Selena, i heard you were sick. Are you-!” When shingen fully opened the door and saw me, his eyes widened in surprise. I could feel his intense gaze all over me.
Oh no, I should have waited just a bit more! Is there any way to save this? I thought of something quickly and slowly pulled the bun away from my lips, smiling at shingen with a trained expression.
“My lord, you have finally arrived. I was eagerly waiting your arrival to wish you a happy birthday. I had to wait so much for you that I started to crave the buns.” I carefully set the bitten bun down, trying to keep my poise and posture. “I hope you will accept being served by me as a birthday gift.”
He stood there as I spoke, his gaze turning dark and intense with desire. Shingen made his way towards me, that charming smile finally appeared on his face. “A heavenly maiden comes to wish me a happy birthday? I must truly be blessed.”
He took a seat beside me, his arm wrapping around my waist to pull me closer to him. I had to hold back my desire to throw my arms around him, for the sake of the roleplay! Using the skills Yoshimoto taught me during our acting classes, I gracefully poured sake on a cup for him.
Every movement I made was carefully thought, I gently set the bottle down on the table. Looking up at him with a dazzling smile, I could see the corners of his ears turning red.
Shingen picked up the cup filled with sake and took a sip, letting out a satisfied hum as the sweet liquid ran through his tongue. “A drink poured to me by such a beautiful being tastes like heaven.” His gaze was glued to me, I could feel his hand on my waist slowly going down.
“Not so fast, my lord. You still didn’t let me serve you properly, I had so many sweets prepared for you.” I couldn’t let him rush this so soon, I gently pushed him away as a way to tease him a bit.
Those eyes were showing a hidden feral need, he was getting impatient with waiting. I knew that he wouldn’t be able to handle not touching me, but I had to play this role just a while longer.
“If this celestial maiden wants to serve me properly… allow me to finish eating the bun that you took a bite of.” I was surprised that he wanted that bun specifically, there were many others that were bigger and probably sweeter.
But I wouldn’t argue with his demand, I picked up the chestnut bun I had taken a bite of and offered to him. His lips opened wide to eat the sweet, his tongue sensually caressing my fingers in the process. Another deep hum of satisfaction could be heard. “This must be the sweetest bun I have ever had, perhaps because it was touched by your lips.” He pulled me close yet again, showing his impatience through his greedy touches. “It makes me wonder how sweet your lips must taste.”
At this point his lips were almost touching mine, a growing ache for his warmth couldn’t stay ignored any longer.
I need him.
“If my lord is so curious, you should try them.” That was all It took for us to fall on the floor together, our lips crashed against each other. My back was pressed against the floor while shingen hovered on top of me, his arms and knees keeping his body balanced. His tongue pushed past my lips, making me moan when I felt him exploring my mouth deeper.
My voice was muffled by his kisses, leaving me panting once our lips had to separate from each other. His face was still close, his cheeks flushed red from our kiss. “It feels sinful of me to want more, but I don’t think there is any coming back from this.”
The sweets and drink was soon forgotten, our passion taking place as far more important. His hands tugged at the collar of the costume, showing my collarbone. Those lips were back on my skin, I could feel his teeth gently biting my shoulder, leaving a love mark there. Shingen seemed satisfied with it, the color was very visible. He moved his kisses downwards, leaving a trail of marks until it reach the top of my chest. “It looks like your body is covered by petals.” His voice was sweet and low, enough to make me melt.
His hands open the robe more, revealing my breasts openly to the cold air of the room. “You are far too lovely, maiden. I must cover you in more petals of love.” He resumed his kisses, gently sucking on the skin of my breasts to leave more love bites. My voice, no longer muffled from his kisses, could be heard more clearly now. My fingers bury in his hair, pulling on it gently, I needed to have him closer to me.
His kisses suddenly stopped, making me look at him impatiently. His arms wrapped around my back, lifting me up gently. “I might be in need of your warmth, but I cannot take you on the floor. A goddess deserves only the best.” With his long strides, he moved us quickly to our bed. He carefully laid me down before going back to kissing me, his teeth gently tugging on my lower lip as he pulled back.
He fully took the robes I was wearing off, though his hands lingered on the wings of the costume. “We cannot have this here, otherwise you might fly away before I can properly love you.” He took the wings carefully, putting them away far from our bed. He took off his own clothes, letting them pool around him on the ground
His hands were all over my body, caressing me between my legs as he positioned himself on top of me. My arms pulled him closer so that I could kiss his neck, making him inhale sharply. He marked me so much around the neck and chest area, it’s only right I leave my own mark on him. And because I want him to enjoy himself too. “You are torturing me like this, Selena.” Oh, he was back to calling my name, I guess the acting didn’t last for long.
“You are doing- ahn! the same to me.” His fingers went deep inside me, making me throw my head back as I melted against him. With my neck exposed, he kissed my throat passionately, adding to the pleasure.
This was feeling so good yet it was so torturous to wait, but the torture didn’t last for too long. Perhaps he also became impatient, because he entered me fast. I gasped, feeling his hand stroking my breasts he filled me completely inside.
Our bodies were pressed together as one, his arms were holding me tightly as his hips moved. My lips crashed against his once again, giving myself completely to him. In the end I really just retuned to being myself, but it was fun roleplaying with him.
Shingen pulled away from the kiss, holding me so that our eyes met as we were getting close to melting into each other. “Even if you aren’t dressed as one, you will always be my goddess. Thank you for your gift to me, Selena.”
A smile rose on my lips, I held his face and gave him a deep kiss as we reached our high, our bodies relaxing after that intense activity. “Happy birthday, my love.”
That night didn’t end there, my gift to him lasted for quite a while. I am sure my gift to shingen made him very happy, I know I was happy as well at the end of it.
The end.

How the antiship community held me back from healing
I don't like necessarily labeling myself in this discourse now but I suppose I would technically be considered an ex-antishipper.
In the past I was antiship because proshippers abused me, or well I thought they did. Because obviously my abusers and predators when I was a kid would be proshippers right? Because they must have liked the content about the stuff that they did to me. Even the ones who never talked about the content. Because they were never proshippers they were just cartel members, organized crime, customers of such, or child predators. Being in antiship spaces lead to people trying to convince me of that. I don't think I ever fully lied... I am both histrionic and a sociopath and when I was pre-therapy (for trauma- I had therapy as a kid for suicidality and self harm but not the other issues until adulthood), I was incredibly delusional and easily influenced. I was being pushed to believe these things by others so hard that I didn't understand where my "filler" memories for my amnesiac periods of time and terror of the unknown started or ended. My perception of reality was easy to mold and change. And with that warped perception of "these were my abusers" and "these people are the same as my abusers" my own delusion was able to be weaponized against others.
Part of why it took so long to accept this as what happened is because I wanted to believe I had gotten better. Being raised in a cult originally also tends to mean reactionary and unreasonable beliefs stick and stay deep inside of you. But I was so certain I was different. We moved away when I was 9 and when I got internet access starting at 11 I slowly got into leftism. I couldn't possibly still be affected, I was better now, safer. I had to be or that meant I deserved to die obviously. (Something antishippers also sadly seem to be the types to push as well- reform only for those who do minors ills.) Those thought patterns and delusional fears of being a monster were just the continuation of ideas from the cult. Those problems with my thought patterns and ideas never got resolved merely the targets changed and people around me convinced me I was acting justly.
I hadn't healed as much as I thought I had and everyone around me was enabling my delusions. People were actively making it harder to heal and the fact I didn't have a proper therapist yet for what had actually happened and the actual extent of my disorders certainly didn't help. Cult brainwashing doesn't go away because you educate yourself on topics, it needs deep intensive help to fully remove. My current therapist cannot even fully help me in that regard. I need a deprogrammer. But antishippers often told me otherwise, and the community in general lead me and I know so many others to holding conflicting beliefs and allowing reactionary ideology to go unchallenged.
I want to be clear here that antishipping itself is not a cult nor cultlike and as a survivor of a cult I find it repulsive to compare the two. Antishippers do not have a child trafficking operation with connections to the cartel set up in their temple's basement. They don't have preschools that work as a front for further trafficking, and they don't murder their detractors and bribe the police to cover it up or ignore the mass graves. But what many antishippers do is take advantage of people who have experienced those things and similar.
I started having my doubts as I healed more and more and I became incredibly more and more jaded against antishippers in general as time went on and I heard more horror stories and saw more antiship people going after people who held the positions I did as not being "antiship enough" or "secretly being proship". See, the idea I had in my mind of a proshipper was someone who would send gore, death threats, threaten to assault you, purposefully trigger you, bait you into self harm, and throw a tantrum over media ever being analyzed by anyone ever. Because those were the kinds of people who would go out of their way to dig through my various tiny social media accounts to harass me for the one time every 7 months I would ever talk about shipping discourse.
Normal people (meaning most proshippers) would not take time responding to a child having a mental breakdown and thinking that all proshippers are literally the people who abused them (and yes I say literally because I did believe at one point in my life that every proshipper I had interacted with had been one of my past abusers on an alt account because again I was severely mentally ill and not properly treated and my OCD has psychotic elements) but the neo-nazis and the genuine child predators would.
I think that's part of what keeps people like me in the antiship sphere for so long. I was bound to be pushed out eventually given my love for media such as Berserk, Fear and Hunger, and games by Nitro+CHiRAL. I've always loved dark media, I've loved blood and gore and death, and even before I accepted I was a necrophiliac I found corpses incredibly intriguing in a way that was obviously not normal. I had opinions in line with what I've seen people say proship is- no harassment to others, like what you like, don't want the government to get involved with things. But because the only proshippers who would interact with actively unhinged and deranged posts and meltdowns I had were bound to be bad people and/or ill equipped to handle a child in active crisis- who mind you was getting trafficked the entire duration of the time and was having constant blackout episodes- I was lead to believe that the proship community and those within it were all a genuine danger to my safety. And I never once had the courage to question if the antiship community was harming me as well. Not until I started getting into recovery at least.
Because part of recovery was having repressed memories come up, part of recovery was having those memories be a constant thing I had to sit with. Part of recovery was me desperately wanting to write about what happened to me in fiction but being terrified if I did I would be ostracized for being a proshipper even when I was planning to handle the topic "correctly" in my writing. Part of recovery was being told that the reason I found certain things so attractive was because I may have died if my brain didn't change the horrors I experienced and the sense of helplessness into a new form of control through lust and desire. Part of recovery was realizing I had been lied to by everything and everyone since the day I was born and having to question everything I knew about myself and my ideas.
And those questions lead to answers.
The main core the main thing that people had gotten to me on in order to fully convince me of the antiship position above all else- was so insignificant and stupid.
I used to be into guro and very much liked it when I was 12/13 or so and part of that was as a way of coping with what I had repressed. Part of my issues and dissociation had been not noticing the scars that litter my own body. Scars I've had since I was under the age of 10. Scars that are inseparable from the real issue that caused me to act the way I did that got blamed on my consumption of darkfics and guro. I was violent and aggressive to others in middle school and early highschool and at some point antishippers convinced me it was because the media I read had normalized it and pushed me to act in these ways. But then I broke through more of my amnesia and realized I was getting trafficked weekly multiple times a week when I had these outbursts. It was never my fault and I never was tainted by the media I read. I was scared and I was having flashbacks and hurting people on accident and nobody understood what was happening.
I feel so fucking stupid for having hated myself for so long for having been able to be convinced that reading stuff caused that when maybe just maybe I could have realized things sooner maybe someone would have saved me. But of course that's also wishful thinking.
Media was my escape and it was torn from me and deemed the source of the symptoms of my abuse that I was trying to escape from.
I may not consider myself a proshipper. But I most certainly am not an anti. Not after realizing everything. Now I'm actually allowing myself to indulge in things I've been missing and to accept my paraphilia that my trauma left me with. Because one final part of this and that coming to accept that it's okay to be a necrophile is accepting I can write and make art about it and have a character centered around it who I very much do plan to post about. I can also stop feeling guilty for my kinks and fetishes and playing games that may sexualize bad situations and actions. Because fuck it I do find slavery hot and I'm allowed to as a survivor of it and I find weird tentacle rape hentai as hot as well. I may be grossed out or scared of other media as well but that doesn't mean it's actually dangerous to me. And people cannot convince me I'm in danger and scare me as easily as they could before.
══════════════✿══╡°˖✧✿✧˖°╞══✿══════════════
I am anti-contact for paraphilias that would break consent or cause egregious harm to a person even with consent. Disclaimer is here because I mention my paraphilia in this post and want to be clear I have no wishes to act on it IRL. I also know not everyone who like fictophilic para content is actually attracted to the real versions- I don't get that given my attractions to fiction are identical in reality but I'm also really autistic and weird so ya do what you will. Feel free to add anything if you wish!
