Day 29: Defiance: of Gender, of Expectations

Heyya @desi-lgbt-fest! Kinda late again, but here is a prompt submission 😊

You know, being an Indian girl, you got to meet certain expectations, like being quiet, wearing only feminine clothing, not use curse words, don't be loud and rowdy, and the list of nonsensical restrictions goes on.

I did have a lot of questions about such things as a kid, and I stood out quite a lot because I loved stuff that boys tended to enjoy, such as motor cycles, having short hair, wearing shorts, a good brawl, etc. (Still do, though!)

As I got older, I expressed my personal preferences to my parents and rebelled against them, like getting a masculine haircut, swearing (only when necessary, of course), and taking up Judo.

Through the years, my parents got used to me being me, mostly because they understood. For instance, my mom knows I get a little cranky if I don't get my hair trimmed at the barbers, especially during summertime.

Recently, my mom joined me in my jacket collection! So far, it has mostly been denim since I take up after my dad, but I got myself a lovely leather jacket straight out of the men's section because why the heck not.

Other than being masculine, there are times I tend to be feminine, such as wearing kurtis and hoping to wear the saree I once wore during my farewell but with freshly trimmed hair, a rather bold move that I hope to achieve someday.

Nowadays, I get a lot of heads turning towards my direction because I embraced myself by defying gender and societal expectations. And boy, does it feel so good.

Weekend Update - 03/17/2024 (on 03/18/2024)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! ☘️ This format will be a bit abbreviated this week. It’s been rough for me the last few week with work especially and life somewhat.

I think in sharing a small portion of what some of my days have looked like the last few months (mainly violent patients, disrobing patients, family members bringing drugs and other contraband into the hospital, a man arguing with security in a diaper) and still being expected to finish your shift and be ready to come back in a day or two, any of these single events might be a lot for some.

One silver lining, mama Nerdie has life advice: “Watch some Pedro and forget about old man balls.” Words I never thought I would hear her say but also words to live by. 🤣🤣🤣

For me they’ve become weekly. 😑 When I read it all together I realized it was a lot but it was a lot. Do I see a lot every week? I think I’m desensitized 😵‍💫 I’m kinda concerned but also it helps me function so…

Anyway, due to the above, my fic rec section will be shorter, what I put out this week is definitely shorter and the week of 03/24 and 03/31, there won’t be a weekend update from me as I am taking a well earned I think, vacation. 😎 Yay!

I should have my March Prompts scheduled through 3/31 and my Ezra series should continue through the end of March as well. I plan to continue Ezra, my fluffy Din series and Wedding Dieter series in April. 😘 Likely mid to late April as a heads up.

It is directly comparable because people don't like the sight of a woman breastfeeding. She's just doing her job making sure her baby is fed and people feel the need to make aggressive remarks about it and separate those women.

earlier I was thinking about the Rebels Swap fic I wrote, so I'm gonna pick that one 😎 something I think is cool that I didn't get a chance to mention in it is that the swaps don't just reach the Ghost crew - it's also an AU where Anakin is Fulcrum and Ahsoka is Lady Tano, among many other things >:) (I know you know that but shhhh)

okay wait I finished reading the bone shard daughter and I’m so 😭😭 the first 200-ish pages were honestly a little slow and it wasn’t boring but I wasn’t dying to pick it up every day. After I hit the middle of the book I !!! It is so fast paced and exciting !!! Literally finished the rest of it in one go and went to bed at 3am.

I think my fave thing is how well the author sets the tone ! I feel like I could picture each scene perfectly and often the eerie weather/environment adds to the creepiness and tension of a scene. Also like, the slight body horror rlly just. Elevates quite a bit near the end 😭

Lin is literally my fave… my luv… I kind of predicted where the dead-mom plot was going and then I read the authors notes in the back where she talks abt how she likes writing mysteries where people can feel smart if they predict it like . 😭 truly. pandering 2 her audience. That audience is me. I did feel smart, for a second. Literally humbled.

Anyway also obsessed w worlds where homophobia doesn’t exist 😎 like yes talking abt queer struggles very important but also sometimes Like 😭 I live thru that every day already pls just let me have these wonderful pre-established queer couples. Reading abt colonization sucks but at least it’s not colonization AND homophobia u know 😺👍🏻

ALSO speaking of world building I think. The book handled topics like class struggle quite well. I’m really relieved that Ranami didn’t compromise any of her ideals and there was realistic tension btwn her and Phalue, as well as a clear progression from Phalue having a savior complex and thinking she understands oppression to her deconstructing how her privilege makes her both comfortable and blind sighted. 10/10. So lovely.

I wouldn’t say that like, abolition is a theme in this book book bc it’s very light but the goal of the rebel org in this world is to bring down the monarchy, and near the end of the novel Jovis mentions how simply switching out the people in power doesn’t fix the system as a whole. Which is like !! Then we have Lin, whose goal in the second book is literally trying her best to create a moral monarchy. V excited to see how this plot line goes 👁👁 I AM going to be like. A little upset if the monarchy remains at the end of the series specifically bc this book mentions how corruption of the system cannot be fixed by individuals and like ???? idk man 😭 very excited 2 read the second book <33
