Do you think if Owl House’s third season were longer instead of being crammed into 3 long episodes, it would’ve been better?

I actually did a blog about this literally the night before the S3 finale and the finale did not prove me wrong!

But I want to emphasize here that a lot of these problems... are due to S2 and S1. S3 is how it is BECAUSE of the writing choices the team made going into it. There were ALWAYS going to be problems with S3 because of how S2A was paced, because of the INSANE decisions made in the face of the shortening in S2B like the Collector. Just the insane amount of mismanaged time. But I like to provide evidence:

No usable villains: S1 had the most amount of threats that could be taken seriously and even they weren't treated the best. The EC were still mostly bumblers who could be taken out by Eda or Hooty with EASE, Lilith is used for comedy far more than threat in S1, even if her role as straight man works to keep some of her menace, Kikimora is barely there and Belos is introduced at the end of the season. All the one off villains are pathetic and usually defeated through brute force in their episodes proving that except by schemes, like Really Small Problems, they're all fucked going against Luz in S2 who now has actual power behind her. So by the end of S1, you have Hunter, Kikimora and Belos. S2A will then go on to make Hunter immediately not a villain, Kikimora a joke by the end of it and ignore Belos entirely until S2B while introducing no new real villains so now they only had BELOS and their time is running out. Also, their only human realm villain is a joke who got beat by Camila, let alone anyone with magic. Speaking of:

Edit: I straight up forgot to mention the coven heads but S2 does technically set them up... and then destroys the coven system, giving them no systemic power, and Luz literally saved all of theirs lives so they have no reason to fight her. Also because the Collector is straight up not a villain in S3, he would not be sending them out to kill people even if that were his style so they don't count as usable villains and neither does the Collector.

Power Scale Issues: In literally the sixth episode, Willow singlehandedly beats the shit out of an entire squad of trained MONSTER HUNTERS without even the element of surprise. She's just that strong. By S2's end, EVERYONE will be at her level. Luz at the START of S2, before glyph combos are introduced, takes down the Selkidamus effectively single handedly. She literally only needed physical strength of pulling the thing in and NO ONE acts like it's a question if she can slay it once she's given a sword. It's really fucking bad. And as they have magic in the human realm, all of these characters are still at that power level for what would have been the first half of the season. This means threats and villains are out of the question. How about character work?

Character Blandness: Willow has no character. She is wishy washy all the way through the series and this is true even in S1 where she is shy for half the episodes and also the most brazen person you know in the other half, sometimes in the same episode. Escaping Expulsion murdered about half of Amity's potential and Reaching Out made sure that there would literally never be a conflict about Lumity and made Amity only a bland love interest with daddy issues and her dad isn't in the human realm so you got nothing on her for the first half. Hunter had to have almost all of his shit dealt with by the end of S2 so he's a certified good guy at their side by the Day of Unity who at least half of the cast have accepted so all you have is backstory angst which they can only do so much of without it being repetitive or boring, especially if you want the BIG reveal to only happen shortly before his possession. Luz has her angst which can't be resolved until post Belos revealing it so you have half a season where NO ONE CAN DO ANYTHING. You theoretically have Camila fluff and Vee angst/fluff potentially but people got pissed at Hop Pop and Sprig getting episodes dedicated to them in the human realm instead of the plot. How would most have reacted to characters who have made barely an appearance stealing half a season from the entire Hexide Squad?

Human Realm is Bad: By the end of S1, the Isles has cellphones, it has televisions, it broadcast news, it will fight for a wrong unjustly done, etc. S2 only doubles down as it introduces robots, child endangerment laws and other things that are just part of the human realm. That's why ALL of the fish out of water jokes in Thanks to Them are utter shit and require characters acting like complete morons because the two worlds are the SAME. And they have almost always been that way. The only difference is that one has electricity, the other has magic. As such, going to the human realm is just not compelling. It doesn't even have thematic reasons to do so except I guess to FINALLY actually show Luz being bullied and they didn't even do that in the specials.

And sure, stuff with the resistance could have been neat in the second half. The first half could have included good fluff like Lumity dates and Gus freaking out about the human realm for an episode. But... It would still be needing to introduce elements. It would still be scrambling for ways to fill the time because S2 killed most of the potential for the characters and was so focused on that goal, even in S2A, that it didn't introduce compelling plot elements for drama or good villains to play into its adventure elements.

Could it have been better? Possibly. But a lot of people felt how much S3's specials were just padding. Just wasted time. Now TRIPLE the length of the season?

Yeah... The shortening was a blessing, not a curse.

Robin is a palisman that transfers around, Dick Grayson had it first, it being a palisman of one of his parents before they passed. When Jason started to hang around him and Bruce at the bathouse it eventually transfered over to him, and then transferred to Tim afterwards.

Dick Grayson did get a new palisman eventually though!! And it's reminiscent of Nightwing.

Jason does die and gets brought over to the Emperor and becomes the Crimson Knight and is stationed with Damian a lot. So missions Damian goes on, he is there as back up (As per request of Talia). He's a lot like the Young Justice Redhood at this point and my design is also reminiscent of that.

Tim's got the mid parents, may lean into the way Amity's parents are. He also doesn't have older siblings there to help out until Duke shows up and convinces him to go stay at bathouse permanently or something. (Dick and Babs do have a friendship with him though at school and try to get him to go to Dicks house more often but he doesn't)

Haven't thought about Stephs situation enough so if anyone has any ideas!!

As for covens, (I haven't thought about them enough RIP, will be added to as I get my act together)

So, after watching the Owl House finale at like midnight and then proceeding to freak out about it for the next few hours, I was too exhausted to really put together too many coherent thoughts. Anyways, here are some of my thoughts on the Owl House series finale:

MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW

*First off, I was not okay throughout the entirety of this episode, and I was constantly switching between smiling like an idiot and fucking sobbing, so it was a rollercoaster (in the best possible way)

*That nightmare sequence based off of Luz, Eda and King’s trauma built up throughout the show was a hell of a way to start off the episode

*Tbh though, I loved that the episode took the time to really address Luz’s fears and insecurities about being too much like Belos

*Luz figuring out it was all fake because Amity is a nerd and wouldn’t have misquoted Azura? That’s so funny and I love her for that

*The light spell really came back full circle huh, being the first spell she learned and the one that saved her multiple times in this episode

*The Luz, Eda, and King reunion?? Screaming, crying, throwing up, too many feelings to comprehend

*The Collector comparing death to broken toys that can be easily fixed really puts into perspective how little he really understands about humans, what a great moment

*Raine fighting back against Belos like the BAMF they are, I love to see it!

*I see you King, being the only one to use they/them pronouns for the Collectoe

*Collector Backstory Collector Backstory Collector Backstory!!

*Luz seeing the hurt and loneliness in the Collector and giving them a chance to understand what friendship actually is was honestly so important to me. Plus, reliving all of those great moments through the show was amazing!

*I was wondering if the Titan’s heart was ever going to come into play

*I’m always here for shows that understand that kindness and forgiveness are important, but that not everyone deserves it (looking at you Belos)

*While Belos was not someone the Collector should have shown kindness to, it really goes to show how he wanted to change for the better and take Luz’s words to heart

*When Luz straight up fucking died, I was basically in denial until I knew she was okay. It still sucked though. I mean, the balls of light floating throughout the Boiling Isles, Camila crying, everyone not knowing what the lights mean, but also knowing that deep down, they understand, it was beautiful and heartbreaking

*The Collector trying to “fix” Luz and it not working and then being so confused and scared?? Absolutely not, excuse me while I sob again

*While I hate Eda and King being devastated about Luz, I wanted nothing more than to see them wreck Belos’s shit

*So many thoughts about King’s father! The reveal, the mini Hooty, conformation of the Titan being bigender, I loved all of it!

*Also, can we just talk about how the Titan didn’t give the powers to Luz because she was the chosen one or anything like that, but because she made the choice to be there and to keep fighting and the Titan recognized that? Because I love it!

*”So the question is, will you choose yourself?” I will never get over this line!

*The Camila and Amity hug?!

*Camilla and the others using the glyphs Luz had taught them was so cool!

*I really appreciate how the writers made sure that even though the Collector redeemed himself, he also recognized how his actions, no matter how naive or misguided they were, still hurt and traumatized people, and he apologized for it and put in the work to make amends and do better

*TITAN LUZ!!!

*Eda and King helping Luz with the magic made me smile so much!

*Small moment, but Hunter specifically being the one to save Gus’s palisman? Guess I don’t need my heart then, thanks 😭

*Eda and Raine reunion! And me tearing up for the 50th time during this episode

* “For I am the Good Witch Luz, child of the Human Realm, student of the Demon Realm, and warrior of peace! Now eat this sucker!” OH MY GID SHE SAID IT ASFFHGDGHJJBV IT’S DO COOL

*I’ve seen arguments over Belos’s death and ngl, I’m glad it was anticlimactic. He didn’t deserve anything more than melting away and having his head stomped in

*Luz not saying a single word as Belos made one more attempt to manipulate her? Absolutely incredible. Luz understanding that she isn’t like Belos and not letting his words get to her and drag her down with him? Everything I needed to see

*All if the family reunions at the end had me crying, especially when Hunter thought he was all alone and then Darius appeared and Hunter immediately brightened up and was showing off his shirt and god, this episode has wrecked me

*I can’t even begin to point out everything I loved about the time jump epilogue, so I’ll just share some of my favorites!

*The new character designs! I loved every one of them! I freaked out every time a different character was shown

*Hunter learning how to carve palismen!

*Eda being the headmaster of the School of Wild Magic!

*The matching flapjack tattoos!

*Luz going to college in the Demon Realm!

*The Darius and Alador moment we got!

*The quinceañera?! Dana was so real for making sure we got to see that!

*Everyone saying the iconic Byeeee at the end, making me cry (again)

the complex and nuanced religious trauma that comes with being raised in a culture dedicated to unquestioningly worshipping a sole religious figure that claimed he could speak to your god. how the cycle of physical, emotional, and religious abuse is perpetuated from one generation to the next, to the point that it’s entrenched in the culture of the boiling isles. how because violence and competition has been normalized in the emperor’s coven, every coven head (yes even the ones you like) saw a LITERAL CHILD be horribly abused by the emperor to the point where hes covered in scars and sat back and did nothing, even going as far as to admonish him for being a “spoiled brat” (lilith) and making him “prove himself” to not be completely loyal to belos, something he’s been manipulated to be since birth, to be seen as worthy of help and affection (darius)

why perry porter was in eda’s flashback in king’s tide with the other important adult characters dana he was in like 3 episodes he has like 5 min of screen time total you can’t just drop the potential eda-perry friendship and not expand on it

What I think the Owl House Season 3 Would have Been

I’m trying to use what we got to reconstruct what could have been, as best I can. I have a few notes before we get into this in earnest.

First is that Thanks to Them is probably the most accurate to the Season 3 that could have been, while the other two were later in production so rewriting is easier. So 3x01 is a lot more re-editing, while 3x02 and 3x03 are more rewriting.

I also think that due to how 3x01 plays, it’s the majority of the season’s runtime.

Escape from the Human World (Eps 1-10)

So the timeskip between the immediate aftermath of King’s Tide to the actual plot of Thanks to Them is roughly the entire in-plot time of the first two Seasons combined. It has been 2-3 months since Luz and the others arrived. Which to me feels like this is where the majority of the episodes would go.

I also feel like the separate plot threads in Thanks to Them were re-organized to fit into one episode. Camilla and Luz’s scenes feel earlier than the Hunter/Luz Beloshunt. And then the Hexolio treasure hunt feels later on still.

Worrying about what to feed the Demon Realm kids would be easy scenes in Ep 1-2 of a season, with hints of Belos around foreshadowing the end of the ep block. Luz in class is a good mid-point moment, establishing where the plot is ending (Haunted Halloween) and how their failures weigh on her. Then Belos gets into Hunter, slowly growing more powerful until we get to the end. And the Hexolio Treasure hunt would be the final two eps of the block.

The opening montage covers more or less a good set of things that would be one of-episodes, and what isn’t there is in Willow’s scrapbook. We also have the Witch Hunter Wannabe Jacob to be an interim villain while Goo-Belos skulks around attacking bunnies. A slice of life with ominous angst hanging over it.

Back to School (Eps 11-14 or 11-15)

So this is a bit fuzzier, the best use of this space is three-fold.

Establish what happened in the Boiling Isles

Establish the weapons and tools going into handling the Collector

Spacing out the events from the first act from the third act.

I figure the Hooty backstory goes here, a better explanation for how Eda and Lilith were un-collected. And what the Collector is and what they need to do to stop him. On the side of the Eda team in this season.

This means a smaller role on Luz and team Hexside as they work through their baggage from the end of Act 1, hatch Luz’s palisman, check in on the surviving Hexside encampment, and whatever the real plan was with Boscha and the angry kitten. I do think Kiki is the boss fight at the end of this segment, but I feel like it’s a lot more of a ‘Luz and co get a break before the actual endgame’ space.

This feels like it should be the shortest portion, the only way it gets longer is if they put any backstory beats in here for lore junkies.

Nightmares Real and Imagined (Eps 15-19 or 16-20)

So I think the bridge point between the two sections happens as we saw. Collector nabs everyone, starts torturing our heroes cause Belos said it was a good idea. I don’t know if Belos starts in Raine or just ends up in them in a longer season run.

It would make sense to burn a few ‘characters that I guess exist but nobody likes’ such as Terra or the other Coven Leaders who aren’t people we like. No longer having them as concerns if they’re just- withered husks after Belos is done.

A lot happened in the 55 minute version of this section, but I can see each section (the nightmares, the Collector’s games, the travel across the island) being more or less their own episodes. While Belos does Belos nonsense in the background. Culminating in ‘breathing’ and the Collector realizing where Belos has gotten to.

The other advantage to a longer run is more Papa Titan trying to get Luz attention (probably also in the previous section as well, but more here). That someone is out there trying to help. He’d also be the right way to make Light Glyphs the anti-Collector spell. 

Luz ‘dying’ is the end of the first half of the finale. And the second episode opens on her in the space between. Then Titan Luz and fighting and NOW EAT THIS SUCKA! It feels like the right tempo when you look at say Season 2′s ending.

Now, here’s where I get greedy.

And they Lived Happily Ever After (Ep 20)

See, I can see the ending credits + postcredits scene as its own episode. Visiting with each of the characters a little bit to set-up that no, the story didn’t end there. It feels too long for a stinger on a 20 minute episode, but I don’t know how feasible it’d be as a standalone.

But I want it as a standalone, so we have more than just a glimpse of who everyone is, we get to actually enjoy some dialog. Del telling Hunter he’s doing a good job. Boscha being pissed she’s washed up while Willow went pro. Whatever weird pirate life Amity has going on. How Amity and Lilith became mentor and student again. What is Vee up to other than baseball.

This isn’t strictly needed, but it would be the right tonal end for the series as a whole. As, yes, sure, fighting genocidal colonizing bastard has been a staple of the show. A huge focus of the show is caring about these characters. So seeing them living their lives would matter more than watching one gooey bastard get stomped on.

No matter how deeply satisfying that was.

I made sure not to look at Twitter or through Tumblr before watching it on the Mouse channel...I’m glad I did.

HUNTER IS OKAY AND IS HIDING AT HEXSIDE. And Gus is so sweet feeding him a decent pack of lunch.

We don’t know yet what happened to the residents of the Owl House.

We get a backstory for Augustus Porter: poor kid has been beating himself up for being easily fooled by jerks. Oh honey, we’ve been there. And who better to commiserate with than with Hunter.

Look at this best friend meet-cute:

Props to Willow for being a super supportive pal at the beginning. And showing her new pal Gus how to calm down through a breathing exercise. Also props to Hunter for bungling the breathing exercise when he tried to give it back to Gus near the end, making him laugh and ending the super illusion.

Principal Bump allowing mixed tracks at Hexside is heartwarming to see...until some Coven Head and his mooks arrived. Seeing Edric and Emira in their mixed track uniforms = SWEET.

Unlike another magical school that some of us may be aware of, Hexside isn’t a 100% safe haven, but that doesn’t mean the staff and students won’t kick butt. As Principal Bump once told Eda in S1, “I’m not a stooge.” The man MEANT IT.

YEAH...

Adrian Graye is a TERRIBLE BOSS. And he’s been incapacitated by a STUDENT. He had it coming.

Willow and Amity’s friendship mending is still in development, with Amity thinking that Willow still needed her protection. She didn’t realize how powerful Willow Park really is with her Plant powers.

Speaking of Willow: Hunter knows that the real Willow wouldn't be afraid of him. He knows his Captain.

Get WRECK’D (Career ended by a prodigy.)

Hunter is now able to share what he knows about the Day of Unity to Hexside, which hopefully goes a long way to protect the students (at least) from the sigils. I mean, I had hoped that Hunter would be “adopted” by Darius, but Principal Bump would make a formidable protector for the poor kid. Hexside might not be the best place to hide (IMO) for Hunter, but Bump may know some other places.

A MacGuffin? HMMM...

The description for next week’s episode makes me hopeful that Eda and Lilith made it out of the house safely before the Emperor’s Coven arrived. Eda may have taken to heart what Hooty mentioned about hearing the marching in the woods from last week’s episode and prepared accordingly.

Amity better have that talk with her dad soon.

Wow. Okay. So that was Episode 15! That was a lot, and since my liveblogging was broken up so much by various sources of interference I’m probably going to need to rewatch the whole thing through at least once to properly process it. 

But oh man, did this episode ever give me everything I wanted. Info about Willow and Amity’s families! Willow and Amity friendship backstory! Tentative reconciliation! Willow letting loose with her emotions! A full understanding of Amity’s motivations! 

Speaking of that last one, I think I’m going to have to rewatch every episode Amity’s been in now as well, because wow did a lot of stuff get recontextualised by this episode. 

Alright. I’ll probably be a bit slower than usual in responding to messages, since it’s getting to that part of the week where I’m usually a bit busier, plus I kind of put off responding to people so I could finish up this episode first. But I’ll try to get to everyone!

And tonight on ”If The Lampman had just waited a few more seconds he would’ve gotten the answer to his questions,” we find out that there is indeed only one fire glyph in the water fountain spell and that there are two plant glyphs in the petrification spell and that all the glyphs are connected by straight lines.

And hey, don’t dismiss the water spell just because it’s weak. Access to clean, drinkable water is essential for survival and that spell could really come in handy if you ever find yourself stuck someplace without it.

With the help of the Echo Mouse Musse, Luz has been studying Philip’s diary to figure out new glyph combos… and suddenly both the petrification and hellish hand spells make a lot more sense.

Anyway, Luz is trying to find some spell that will help her complete the portal door. I suppose it makes sense to fine-comb the diary for whatever information she can, but I’m not sure Philip’s research into glyph magic is what’s going to help her complete the door. It seems to be more an issue of construction or power.

Hearing Philip mentioned this early in the episode gives me hope that we might learn more about him… and by extension, Belos. Because they are the same person.

YES, I agree Luz, backstory story please Eda. What’s it gonna be? How you met Raine? How you met Hooty? The origin of the Clawthorne clan?

Raine origins it is! We open with teen!Eda and teen!Lilith walking and talking. Eda is reading some questions for Lilith, in particular about the Titan’s humors. We all know what those are, so I won’t go into detail.

(Eda is kicking a grudgby ball because she and Lilith were both in the grudgby team)

As for the title… I’ve no idea what it’s supposed to mean, but I will probably come to find out in time.

The awesomeness that is seeing teen!Lilith is diminished greatly when I’m reminded that this is the same Lilith that will, within a few short months, curse her own sister, a decision that will haunt them both for many years to come. 

We also see here a demonstration of Eda’s talents. We knew that (before she lost her magic) she was more powerful than Lilith, magically speaking. But here we see that she was also academically superior to Lilith, having memorized complex details on particular potion ingredients and how they’re affected by the varying stages of the moon, something Lilith didn’t know.

It’s kinda interesting, because between the siblings, Lilith has always been the one to strike me as book smart, as the one who’d memorize the exact numbers. Her big exhibit in the museum was on balusters, what more do I need to say.

Present Eda (and past Eda too for that matter) doesn’t strike me as book smart in that same way… though I suppose that just lends credence to the old adage about judging the dog by its hairs. Maybe Eda is both talented and studious, as opposed to Lilith who is more studious than talented.

And to be fair to present Eda, it’s happened often that she brings up something she’s read in a book and she clearly knows a lot of different types of magic. It’s just less obvious that she is actually really well-read and educated because she is also a criminal outlaw who sells literal garbage.

(oh, and Eda casually summons a large plant, further showing how even though she wasn’t allowed to study multiple tracks like she wanted, she is still at least somewhat knowledgable in multiple forms of magic)

I think the fandom knows Amity is a very flawed person, and shows it, but they just wont SAY it. One of the biggest AU's in S1 was 'Amity joins the emporer and becomes awful in the event of Luz leaving.' because they know Amity's motivation for changing was simply- 'Luz kinda cute fr fr.' not as much 'bullying this innocent person is really terrible actually.'

They also dull down how nasty she could get, her first appearance wasnt just a passing remark, it was her being as vicious as possible and then essentially saying 'i'm doing this because you deserve it' with the line 'This is why people call you half a witch Willow'. You can not convince me Amity had ANY reason to be that cruel outside of personal enjoyment.

So I'm actually going to tackle these backwards because it flows from what made Amity's character good to what a major issue with her character is now.

So... You're right and I've actually talked a lot, especially in relation to Boscha, how Amity seems actually like the much crueler bully and it's a fundamental difference in how they see targets. See... Boscha would never have continued to bully Willow had they had the same backstory. This is because Boscha doesn't seem to hold much in the way of grudges. Instead her targets are opportunistic, for a laugh or because they threaten the control and stability of her life.

Amity CHOOSES targets. She holds grudges and pushes people down she wishes didn't exist. This is why you get comments like "Humans can bite it" instead of "Only real witches allowed." One is targeted specifically for Luz while the other can be just an in joke between them about how much better they are referencing seeing Half a Witch that day. Amity being as needlessly cruel about Willow's lack of ability is similar. She didn't need to be that cruel but she is because she would rather Willow just not exist.

And that stems from how early Amity was presented to deal with problems. If you made her unhappy, she was going to do everything in her power to be rid of you, including straight up murder. Even in Covention, you still have her holding this deep grudge against Luz for humiliating her, even if it's still more sympathetically portrayed in that episode. If we want to give the writers credit, this is also why she's so cruel to Willow. As a reminder of better times, Willow is something that hurts her constantly and reminds her of this failure and so she constantly wants Willow to just disappear and never be seen by her again. It's sad and it's painful but it is also far more ruthless and cruel than most other characters in the show.

But then we get to how you talk about Amity being a flawed character and, well... There's a difference between how she's flawed in S1, especially early S1, and S2. See, Amity and Hunter both pull a similar trick in their first appearance and second one that made me coin the phrase "It's a lot easier to make a character arc impressive if they start out of character."

For both characters you have a first appearance where they're cartoonishly evil, care nothing for human life and would gladly kill for their goals. Then in their second appearance, they are given a sympathetic motivation to how they act, never act as evil as they did in the first appearance, and by the end of the episode have shown their true, good guy colors, how they relate to Luz, how Luz can help them become better people, and given a sympathetic backstory as to why they believe the things they do so the audience can forgive them. And after that episode neither character is ever actually bad (Hooty's Moving Hassle being honestly weird after Covention for how aggro Amity is in context of things going forward and even just post Covention) after this and the show then starts retconning them EVER being bad people.

So in S1, you could at least pretend that some of that early Amity still existed. That she cared about power, success, had personal goals beyond Luz, had a character beyond Luz, etc. like that. However, then you have S2 where she's only depicted as studying human things, throwing away her family, throwing away the coven system *screams bloody murder*, and throwing away... Everything that isn't Luz. Anything that might connect her to those first two appearances.

Which creates functionally two different characters because motivations and connections and histories MATTER. If a character no longer acts motivated by any of those things, then there needs to be a good reason and the only reasons presented by the show are "Luz wouldn't like this," and "My parents are bad but not enough to actually influence my behavior with them or others." We even see this in personality where she goes from a serious character who is theoretically intelligent, who summons minions and does things with them in combat to allow for surprise resummons, close and far ranged combat and even multiple threats at the same time to... I punch things. With a fist. And I'm not happy, supportive, honest and seemingly have no baggage related to love despite the only love I've ever known being conditional. I am just the perfect girlfriend. And I am only a girlfriend.

So S1 Amity had the flaws of being too driven, having goals that could conflict with Luz's, being ruthless to those she saw as wrong and also overly worried about her position and how people saw her. Lots of good flaws connected also to her strengths that gave a lot of storytelling opportunities, including for how she could get with Luz (which are never really explored besides I guess "I do stupid things around you," which would feel more honest if she hadn't only been punished once for things she did with Luz).

For S2 Amity, the big flaw is... A lack of them. A lack of much of anything. She has such little motivation outside of Luz that it's hard to write angst, fluff, joy, ANYTHING about her that isn't connected explicitly to Luz. It's hard to come up with concepts for what she does with her free time because her passions are so minimal. She has no hobbies anymore or goals. And every choice she makes can be mostly blamed on Luz, such as her giving up the coven system only making sense when you think about the fact that being a coven witch would make her oppose Luz, who literally can only be a wild witch in the eyes of the law.

And in terms of the fandom, I personally see this playing out in the fact that when I first joined the fandom, I watched Lumity comic compilations. They had a wide variety of concepts and possibilities to them, some playing more into Luz, others into Amity. Nowadays... I see as much, if not more, Huntlow than I see of Lumity. Now yes, how much time Lumity has had doesn't help but also I never see anything leaning on Amity's strengths. They're almost all about Luz because how could they not be? One of the characters exists for the other. It's hard to write a character like that.

As a note, Raeda suffers from a similar problem because outside of Eda's Requiem, Raine is written to be entirely for Eda's character and to almost be a clone of her during Them's the Breaks Kid. And this inherently goes against the concept of "Opposites Attract" which isn't always true in real life but in fiction?

That friction in fiction is why so many of the most popular pairings out there are of opposites. There's actually a lot more, like them covering each other's weaknesses, them having a lot to learn from each other, etc. like that. When the two characters are the same, or one is entirely dedicated to the other... What's supposed to happen? Where's the chemistry? The friction? The joys or the pains?

I mean, outside of blushes and twirls of course. At least Amity got that much for ruining all of her character potential.

(Btw, as Rich Witch was largely inspired by ideas born between S1 and 2 of TOH and with the explicit choice of making the Amity inspired character the main character, guess how much I've had to think about this development for Amity over and over again, especially whenever I think about the explicit moment I have planned for Rich Witch where Azu decides following her heart at one point would make her a GENUINELY WORSE PERSON even if it meant getting a girlfriend? *siiiiigh* And I wonder why writing that story still is hard for me.)

2. Favorite episode of season 2?

Tbh S2 fucks so hard I'm not sure I can pick a favorite. I have to cheat by picking one for both the first half and second half of the season haha!

S2A might have to go to Knock Knock Knockin' on Hooty's Door, the amount of speed running plot development all thanks to Hooty my favorite weirdo, it was just insane. I remember when the episode first aired and how much it made my brain boil from what it revealed about Eda's backstory and the growth of accepting the beast resulting in her hot harpy form, the bits of world building with King's situation that continued on from what Echoes of the Past started, and obviously Lumity became canon. I genuinely expected it to take the entire show for them to start dating but no they got together about half way into the show, all thanks to Hooty meddling in everyone's business. Hooty was always one of my favs and the way he was treated in S1 always bummed me out, so this episode both addressing how excluded he felt while also having him (kinda accidentally) provide the much needed pushes for each of King, Eda, and Luz was just 🤌 the ending too omg the way everyone freaked out about him eating that letter then womp womp it ended up being a good thing he did haha

S2B I have to pick Any Sport In A Storm.

Listen. Listen. This episode is such a comfort, ok? It's got Hunter development where he finally gets to socialize (in a healthy way) with other kids, Willow gets her design update AND she's finally genuinely developing confidence in herself, "what was that?" "I SAID IT WAS COOL >:(", Skara and Viney join the group (which also allowed Skara to develop past just being a popular mean girl), "ice pack for Steve" "Steve is beginning to regret his choices", and of course, Darius. Darius my beloved, the small backstory reveal with the previous GG, "Little Prince (derogatory)" he really does canon use cute nicknames to be hostile, the abomination PJs & also the bubble bath storyboards, the DEPTH of what it meant for Darius to intervene in Hunter's kidnapping attempt so now all the responsibility falls onto him when HE DIDN'T NEED TO DO THAT HE DIDN'T EVEN LIKE HUNTER AND IT PUT HIM IN RISK INTERVENING, "I can wear this proudly now...right?" "Can you?", his extra abomination lounge chair while he gingerly kept messing with the EE, "You're gonna need to be a little more clever than that" *12 seconds later the ship crashed and is on fire all because he was too much of a difficult bitch to Tell These Actual Children he wasn't really kidnapping them*, "Do you have any idea what I'm capable of?!", "I'm impressed! I had you all wrong!", the first head pat, the scroll, " But you could still use a sewing lesson." Like. I still can't believe the pay off of that moment. I immediately fell in love with the dynamic between Hunter & Darius at the end of that episode and for the rest of the show they were never able to connect on screen again it was always a "just missed each other" thing, until FINALLY in the finale Darius ruffles Hunter's hair and then asks him about his dumb wolf shirt and 4yrs later he's Hunter's dad. I was fighting for my life for Dadrius since HM (I was more Uncle Darius after ASIAS until HM) and it PAID OFF LIKE!!!! 😭🤌

Anyway can't forget to praise the Huntlow there too, with the parallel to Willow's parents the gold rimmed glasses the "half a witch" parallels and of course, Hunter's first blush towards Willow on the bi flag colored sky. The Lumity subplot was also really funny, especially in hindsight considering Boscha's issues in FTF haha. A 10/10 episode overall

Ok so since this one explicitly excludes hexsquad, hagsquad, and palisman, I think I have to choose Hooty. Hooty was one of my favorite characters back in S2A, he's so hilarious and I love his relationship with Lilith so so much, they're so much like Darius & Eber to me haha!

BUT I also have to talk about the fight against Darius & Eber in Eda's Requiem because that scene of them back to back playing Their Song while Eda's curse mutated the magic around them and was going to KILL THEM rewrote my brain chemistry. LOOK AT THIS. LOOK AT THEM.

Just the palpable longing of them both looking over their shoulders at each other as they played. The animation, the music, the symbolism of it being Their Song, the shared history, the way they were willing to die together for the cause of fighting Belos and the subsequent hindsight reveal of how Fucking Stupid it would've been if they did --between King taking Eda's last name & officially becoming her son, Darius & Eber were also rebels trying to save Raine, ultimately all 3 of Raine Darius & Eber would've just been replaced in time for the DOU, like on every single level this plan was STUPID but the longing gay angst these two have for each other almost made them do it anyway.

Raine's voice cracking at the "You have kids?!" was as funny as it was heartbreaking, because it was just another reminder of how much of their lives they've been apart and how Eda finally let others in but Raine wasn't there for it nor was she ever able to do so for them before. Eda's sputtering about "Well they're not mine mine" like she WANTS THEM TO BE but she can't admit it and is still being closed off and Raine quoting Eda in reference to the scene they already quoted earlier in the episode, all cultivating in Raine letting go of Eda's hand -- like they let go of their relationship years ago -- all to save her ;___; idk pal this episode fucked me up so much when it aired and my partner still teases me when I rewatch it like "you're watching the gay episode again huh"

toh grishaverse au i found in my notebooks today

long ago backstory: functions as the darkling, but with a more Belos TM backstory. he’s the okats’ya younger brother of caleb, who was the first shadow-summoner. he and his brother had to travel a lot as kids because they were still orphans and outcasts

philip knows about caleb’s powers and blames them for having so often, even though caleb tries very hard to hide them.

at their newest village, caleb meets evelyn clawthorne, the daughter of The Miraculous Morozava Clawthorne, the greatest fabrikator in history. evelyn is another fabrikator and they both live openly in their ravkan village, helping openly with ailments more like zowa.

then the village is raided. after the wittebros flee with evelyn and her father, philip turns the rage toward evelyn and ends up killing both evelyn AND caleb.

papa morozova brings back evelyn but is either unwilling or unable to bring back caleb. in a rage, philip steals caleb’s body and escapes under the cover of darkness... CALEB’S darkness. it turns out that in killing caleb, philip inherited his powers. 

most of the other characters are in the 2nd army years and years in the future after belos has created a safe place for grisha... to eventually kill them

slightly less long ago backstory:

Lilith- is kerch, the sun-summoner, and the daughter of grisha who are NOT a fan of the 2nd army. but she comes to ravka anyway because she thinks that it will help things and has been a fan of ravka’s “pro-grisha” propaganda as opposed to the secrecy they have to live with in kerch. she also, uh, tried to give eda a potion to incapacitate her so that lilith could bring her with to ravka and that went VERY wrong. owl-beast kind of wrong.

as a response to the sun-summoner’s arrival, belos sends his current golden guard (darius’s mentor) out to seek morozova’s stag. the mentor tries to draft darius to help him with the job, but darius feels uneasy about the idea of how, exactly, belos wants to use the amplifier. his mentor is hurt but knows that he needs a competent fabrikator to help him, even if it isn’t darius. he asks alador instead.

alador does it despite numerous warnings from darius that it’s a bad idea, and thus he becomes important in the hierarchy and secures himself a marriage to the powerful and wealthy odalia blight.

belos uses his knowledge of what happened to eda as leverage against lilith and promises that if lilith can capture her wayward sister and bring her to ravka, he will “heal her”. (it’s mainly a way to study what happened to her and see if he can implement something similar as a pox against grisha specifically)

The Golden Guard- hunter- a creation of philip’s using caleb’s bones and merzost. he does not have grisha powers of his own, except for mal’s tracking instincts, due to his connection to caleb and evelyn.

blight family affiliations: odalia=heartrender, alador= durast, amity=durast, emira= healer that odalia tries to force into heartrending, edric= alkemi

Darius- all purpose fabrikator. he does it allll and is both feared and envied for that

Eberwolf- squaller

Willow’s dads- alkemi who want willow to be a fabrikator because fabrikators don’t see combat. one of them is a shu refugee and he’s willow’s bio dad

Willow- a grisha with very strange abilities (plant based? what?) trying very hard to to be a fabrikator, but with her lack of ability and shu heritage... it wasn’t going very well.

Gus- prodigy squaller obsessed with different cultures and languages. his dad is zemeni man who was captured by druskelle while traveling and fled to ravka when he managed an escape when he reached fjerdan shores. he’s a tidemaker.

Boscha- heartrender

Mattholomule- inferni, along with his big brother steve

Raine- a squaller with a very niche use of it through manipulating vibrations, especially through music.

Non-2nd Army

The Collector- immortal saint

King- strange offspring of an immortal saint with distinct powers, including being a live amplifier.

Hooty- the sea whip :3

Delll- farmer and keeper of a home for wayward grisha. he has complex powers

Gwen- healer obsessed with trying to “fix” eda

Eda- lives on the outskirts of ketterdam and spends her time trying to help indentures, especially grisha indentures, escape their bonds. she also hones her strange and complex grisha powers

Luz- raised in an insular community in rural kerch by a zemeni man and an transracial suli adoptee raised in kerch by kerch parents, luz is still herself. her school’s headmistress talks camilla into sending her to a boarding school in the north of ketterdam. luz decides to go exploring as she arrives in ketterdam and ends up almost indentured before eda finds her.
