okok, imma go from least favorites, to favorites. And then I’ll talk ab their deaths.

Cho Sang-woo: at the beginning of the series, he liked sang-woo and rooted for him. He excused some of his behavior with him “just being calculated.” He grew to dislike him when he traded his humanity for money and abused of other people’s kindness.

Oh Il-nam: Eren kinda thought he was a bit fishy at the start, but that’s just bc of all the phycological thrillers he watches. He knew he would be important but completely forgot about it when he ‘died’. He was kinda shocked to see him alive, but not too much. Like, he didn’t gasp or anything.

In-ho: thinks he has a superiority complex and doesn’t like it. “Oh just because your mask is different you think you all that, huh?” He guessed it was the stepdad of Gi-hun’s daughter under that mask at first. Made a whole theory ab it too. He’s so dumb😖😖

Jang Deok-su: doesn’t like him one bit. The second he saw how he treated sae-byeok, he disliked him. He knows the game is about survival, but he still doesn’t like the way he abused of his power and strength.

The Salesman: thinks he’s hot LMAOO. Definitely quirked an eyebrow when he said, “you can use your body to pay up.” Doesn’t really think anything of him. Yeah, he’s shitty for luring people in, but that’s all he knows about his character.

Han Mi-nyeo: finds her annoying, he had to double check that bathroom scene when she went to smoke bc “ain’t no mf way.” Constantly asked if she truly had an unnamed child, or if it was just her being…her. Although he cringes a lot when she’s on screen, he can’t help but laugh too, she’s funny, he’ll giver her that.

Ji-yeong: liked how chill her character was, in comparison with everyone else.

Hwang Jun-ho: if someone made Eren’s anxiety skyrocket in this show, it was this mf💀 when he first followed the van that took the mc to the game, he kept yelling at the tv “call for backup, don’t go alone. Tell them where you are.” His legs would tremor every time he’d take that damn mask off. But he overall, liked that he decided to listen to the ‘crazy man’ (mc) and go out of his way, to not only help him, but gather as much evidence as possible, even if he put his life at risk.

Seong Gi-hun: didn’t like him at first, actually, he fucking hated his guts. Doesn’t like where his priorities are—considering he missed his daughter’s birth; and didn’t like that he, at his old age, leached off his mom and dared to have any kind of attitude towards her. He slowly warmed up to his character after seeing how kind and helpful to others he was, for example, II-nam, sae-byeok, Ali, etc. He liked his development, and that he truly felt the heaviness and cost of having all that money under his possession. Got pissed when he prioritized other people rather than his family, again.

Kang Sae-byeok: oh boy. He has a lil crush on her, but don’t we all? Her character kinda, KINDA, if you squint a little, reminds him of Mikasa—just some parts of it. Everything she did for her family, how she always kept her guard up, and how tough she was, reminds him of her. Especially how protective she was. He loved it when she reminded the mc to not stoop down to sang-woo’s level. Cried again bc her kindness was taken advantage of by the man she let live.

Abdul Ali: he likes him the most because he has a few qualities that remind him of Armin. The way he’s respectful and kind, but gets fucked over for it, is something he watched happen way too many times with his best friend. It had him sobbing how he almost won, but his kindness made him blindly trust sang-woo. He was so close and he had a family, who he cared so much about, waiting for him at home. basically, sacrificed himself for them but ended up dying without ever getting to explain anything… sound familiar? sorry :(

Who Eren thinks had the saddest deaths:

Sang-woo: Eren took sang-woo’s suicide at the end as a “way of running away because he knew he’d leave empty-handed.” do I need to say more? he sees him as a traitor.

Il-nam: eh, it was obvious, look at him. He didn’t really care but, he liked how he was proven wrong (ab the whole homeless man, people’s kindness, thing, blah, blah, blah.) as he died.

Jun-ho: “HE’S NOT DEAD!!” Is what Eren screams every time you bring him up💀 he has this whole theory on how in-ho (conceited mask man) purposely shot him in the shoulder so that he wouldn’t die, just like how jun-ho shot in-ho in the shoulder too, and he’s fine!! He’s fully convinced that after he fell in the water, he just swam back to shore🤩🤩 he thinks he’s gonna make an appearance in season two, and help the mc.

Deok-su: He said, “fucking finally.” Was tired of, not only seeing mi-nyeo get humiliated by him but of seeing ppl having to sleep with one eye open😖

Mi-nyeo: liked how she died with style and how she took deok-su with her LMAOO. Didn’t really care, he was too focused on the game.

Ji-yeong: he knew she was gonna die eventually, but he didn’t know it was gonna be so soon and that he’d cry from it. Her sacrifice was what got to him. He understands. *wink* *wink*

Ali: didn’t cry bc of how shocked he was. Didn’t think Sang-woo was capable of doing that. Every time he thinks about him, he just thinks of him going where he agreed to meet up with sang-woo and looking around for him😖😖 he’s so innocent.

Sang-byeok: this one made him bawl. Probably because of the build-up. He knew it was gonna happen soon. The fact that it was sang-woo didn’t make it any better. When she was trying to get Gi-hun to promise to care for her brother, he could barely see the tv anymore due to his blurry vision.

2020 favs: (short) fic recs

I am stealing this idea from @macgyver-sheriff, who has no clue who I am, but whose post I saw go across my dash. Thank you! 👋

Would you like some recs for the holiday season? - I too would like to share love for my favorite things I read that were written this year! <3

I’m going to do this in two parts - the short fics (10k or less, generally one-shot), and another post for the long or series fics I loved this year (it’s 2020, I figure we can use too much of a good thing?)

"Congratulations, Get Rich" (9,238 words) by Attila (The Untamed - modern AU)

Tomorrow is Chinese New Year, which means Wei Wuxian has to get all of his bad decisions out of the way tonight.

Lan Wangji, Lan Xichen, Jiang Cheng, Mianmian are all so screamingly perfect as modern versions of themselves in this, and it is KNOCK DOWN HILLARIOUS. Wei Wuxian is just a screaming queer disaster (affectionate) - as he should be.

Excerpt:

After a long beat, Lan Xichen sinks gracelessly into the chair Lan Wangji had been sitting in earlier. “I just want to be absolutely clear,” he says delicately, “that you are currently under the impression that my brother has no romantic feelings for you. That is what you’re saying to me right now, yes?”

“Yes?” Wei Wuxian says, feeling desperately confused. “Obviously? Why?”

“Because at least one of you is very stupid, and I’m trying to figure out who,” Lan Xichen tells him, sounding distracted. It’s the rudest thing Wei Wuxian has ever heard him say, and his mouth drops open slightly.

“caved to the careless” (6,708 words) by ilgaksu (The Untamed/MDZS - Song Lan/Xiao Xingchen)

Love is a choice you make - like this, and this, and this.

Have you ever read a writer whose work is so distinctly itself that you can feel yourself slipping in time even as you keep going? That’s not very articulate, but it’s the best way I can describe everything of ilgaksu’s I’ve read. Their fics are the same emotional register as having the breath knocked out of you after a fall. This was the first one I read, and I think it ends well-- with what Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen find along the path-- but it’s still heavy. Discussions of canon-compliant character death and grief/mourning here.

Excerpt:

He pauses. Until this very moment, he was unsure who to ask for. He has heard the rumours of the Yiling Patriarch’s ongoing residence here, about Zewu-jun’s seclusion: he’s dead, but even the dead are not free from gossip. But he remembers a courtyard, nearly two decades ago, and the weight of eyes some might have called angry in their intensity. He remembers those same eyes, and how for the wear of the intervening years, they had kept the same essence: longing, yearning, a kind of small unspoken grief.

Song Lan had a dream once. A dream of a sect, bound not by blood, but by a shared belief in the right path. So many things are only an inheritance: shame is one of them.

Love is a choice. Love is a choice, and you choose until you can’t.

“I am here,” he decides, carving the words into the dirt, every stroke of every character resolute, “To meet with Hanguang-jun. Please show this one the way to go.”

“Green River Running” (8,169 words) by @rain-hat (Love in the Moonlight - post-canon AU)

5+1: Kim Byeong-yeon returns to the land of the living.

I skimmed through Love in the Moonlight during my quarantine summer (distinguishable from my “quarantine spring” or “quarantine fall” only by fireworks), and immediately upon finishing, thought: “Psht, they killed off their best character.” And then, something happened that never happens -- I went on ao3 and found the exact thing I was looking for, written far better than I could have imagined. Kim Byeong-yeon is such a quiet yet powerfully subversive presence and the progression here is so masterfully done. This is true of all of rainhat’s work’s I’ve read, but this is a fine example-- I really treasure the warm humanism of them.

Excerpt:

People needed helping hands even more than they needed sympathetic ears, though. Over the last year, Hong Gyeong-rae and Byeong-yeon had built houses and planted crops side by side; negotiating with moneylenders here, helping small-folk secure their stores against bandits there. There was nothing courtly about Byeong-yeon’s capacity for labour, or his expectation of reward. Wherever he went, he worked from dawn to dusk, ate the food he was given, and slept under a roof if he was offered one.

It suited him, Hong Gyeong-rae thought, even though there was something outlandish about his gentle speech and palace manners in the midst of it all. But to behave in any other way would be untrue to his upbringing; nor was he the sort of man to whom it would occur to try. And after all, most people liked to be treated with courtesy; it did not come across as mockery from this solemn, severely dressed young man, who seemed to find no task too big or too small. Hong Gyeong-rae had seen him argue tax law with local councillors and stand up to highwaymen armed with nothing but a knife and staff. But he watched cooking pots for women who had to run to the fields to tide over the day’s labour, too; he wrote letters for them, and tolerated their fractious children and spoon-fed their bedridden elders, if that was what was called for.

“The Veritable Records of King Taejo: Year 2, Entry 208“ (9,857 words) by @sadviper (My Country: the New Age - Nam Seon-ho & Hwang Sung-rok slice-of-life)

Hwang Sung-rok eats his way to the bottom of a real estate scam, and Seon-ho and Yeon help (a little).

No one is out here doing it like SadViper. This is technically part of a series, but they can all be read separately. I did not realize I needed to see more of Nam Seon-ho in all his “type-A government official glory” until Viper started sketching him out for us, and as a bonus, we get to see Yeon, and Sung-rok as the world’s surliest caretaker (but don’t call him that). I have an authorial fallacy where I always think stories have to have some grand “plot” -- a “Maltese Falcon” to pull the reader along-- the genius of Viper’s work is she shows us exactly how interesting and important the day-by-day tiny choices and connections we make are, with an impeccable background of historical research to ground you in the setting.

Excerpt:

Nam Seon-ho was his master now. He was a strange one. He was a traitor, for helping the escaped Liaodong soldiers, but not, because he managed to wiggle his way back into Yi Seong-gye’s favor and was now a sixth-ranked inspector with the privilege of having personal audiences with the King. He was temperamental and belligerent from being the son of a slave mother and a lifetime subject of Lord Nam’s fantastic parenting philosophy. He was afflicted with perpetual guilt. And he was also one of the hardest working and most desperate people Sung-rok had ever known.

It was a terrible combination. He was not merely a disaster waiting to happen, but a disaster perambulating on two legs at the edge of a chasm. If Sung-rok intended to stay in service for long, he needed to find a way to cool down some of Seon-ho’s intensity, even though admittedly, it was what drew him to Seon-ho in the first place.

Thoughts like these plagued Sung-rok for a while. It was one thing to know a person; it was quite another thing to try to change them.

So! This rips my heart out, every time. All the times Dean imagines himself together with Cas...and then he imagines himself, if not happy, then thriving.

Jack: “What is the point...if everyone I care about is going to leave?”

Castiel: “The point is that they were here at all and you got to know them, you... When they're gone, it will hurt, but that hurt will remind you of how much you loved them.”

Excerpt:

The thing Dean tries to do is: listen.

Happiness isn’t in the having. It’s in just — being. It’s in just saying it, Cas tells him, and Dean’s whole heart is screaming, No, but he shuts his mouth. He listens. He listens like his life fucking depends on it, which it does, in more ways than one.

Or: The One in which Cas ghosted Dean.

Look. Look. If Cas(tiel) can yank Dean Winchester out of Hell, celestial-scream at him not once but twice, burn out a woman’s eyes like an utter clown before thinking “Huh, an Earthly vessel, guess that’s not just bullshit, then,” and when they finally work it out, Dean greets them with a knife to the chest and THEN they’ll spend twelve years misunderstanding each other and bickering, you had better believe these two are going to be disasters even in Heaven. Drivingsideways gives us all of that dynamic, with the found family of Jack and Mary as facilitators, and the happy resolution, which of course includes a true form “roughly the size of your Chrysler Building.” <3

The thing is, Castiel doesn’t want Dean to feel obligated.

Dean has a streak of self-sacrifice that's as wide as the Caspian Sea, and Castiel doesn't want to be any more of a chore or obligation than they have been to Dean for all the long years of their—brotherhood.

Castiel had shocked Dean, to the core of him, with their confession, and Castiel had seen the swirling confusion, the fear, the panic, the shit what do I say, what do I do—how do I stop him—

So, no, Castiel would not be paying a visit anytime soon.

Of course, if Dean evinced an interest in meeting them, then Castiel would not stay away.

Castiel isn't that cruel.

(They have, on occasion, been exactly that cruel, but they are trying to outgrow it.)

Dean is still their friend.

Dean knows how to reach them, if he wants to.

“The Rough” (3,267 words) by anactoria (Supernatural, finale -15x20- ‘fix-it’)

Heaven can absolutely fucking wait.

Rec’ed for the concept more than the style (this is dialogue-heavy, as a lot of 15x20 fix-its tend towards), but I *love* this course-correction: After kicking around Heaven, Dean and Cas return to Earth to take their place as urban legends among the hunter community. Just for a while.

Excerpt:

But it isn’t life. That’s the thing. It’s awesome, but it isn’t life; life’s a hard, painful, infuriating mess, and Dean only got halfway through his own, and he feels cheated. For all he held it together for Sammy at the end, for all he tried to take Cas’s big moment-of-happiness speech on board, he feels cheated.

There’s supposed to be peace at the end. When you’re done.

Dean wasn’t done.

Yuma just looks so tiny but I know he’s so powerful (he’s the japanese junior champion and earned bronze at japanese senior nationals this season)

December 13th, 2019

Candy put her earphones in as she left JYP for the day, getting ready to head back to the dorm for a shower before having another girl's night with Luna and Nancy. She was listening to Congratulations by Eric Nam when her ringtone for Sunwoo started playing. With a small smile, she decided to answer him.

"The queen is speaking," she said.

"A little birdy told me the truth about Jisung and Ryujin," Sunwoo hummed.

"The news came out yesterday, it wasn't a secret."

"Wasn't it? You knew last week!" Sunwoo exclaimed. "So? Did you two talk?"

"About what? Rehearsals? Lessons? Dinner? The weather?"

"Candy, you know what. Did you tell him how he made you feel? From beginning to end."

"Yeah, about that," Candy switched which arm her bag was over. "I didn't do that."

"Did you two talk at all?!"

"He asked if I actually forgave him for lying to him about Ryujin and Jisung."

"Lying? About what?"

"It was fake," Candy mumbled, making Sunwoo let out an exaggerated gasp. Her phone vibrated, showing Renjun was calling. "Can Renjun join the call?"

"Oh, but he knows nothing!"

"I know, that's why I'm adding him," Candy added Renjun.

"CANDY! YOU'RE BACK!"

"She's been back," Sunwoo scoffed.

"Yes, hello Renjun," Candy laughed. "Sorry I haven't reached out, I've been trying to catch up on what I missed. I'm free Sunday if you guys wanted to hang out?"

"Ooh, really? Jaemin and Chenle have been talking about you recently. Well, Stray Kids anyway."

"Stray Kids is always in the news," Candy laughed softly. "And for once, it isn't my fault!"

"Jisung and Ryujin were fake, did you know that?" Sunwoo gossiped.

"I could totally tell he wasn't into her," Renjun stated.

"Of course you did," Candy huffed. "I didn't."

"Renjun, she loooooooves Jisung," Sunwoo sang.

"Oooh," Renjun laughed. "I figured that out."

"What? When?" Candy paused outside the building. "How could you possibly know?"

"Well, your solo live. The way your face changes on stage when he performs. Nancy said Jisung was the one who brought you back, too."

"What a snitch," Candy mumbled, heading to her dorm.

"I gotta get to practice, I'll talk to you guys later," Sunwoo said, hanging up.

"You two are friends?" Candy asked, slipping her shoes off.

"I guess we bonded over missing you," Renjun admitted. "But don't get used to it, I still believe I'm your bestie."

"As my bestie, do you think I run away from my problems?" Candy put him on speaker so she could grab things for a shower.

"Depends on the problem," Renjun said after a pause. "If you struggle with a dance move, you work on it day and night, hitting it head on. If someone is mad at you, you hesitate and usually it leads to a bigger conflict. If you do something to someone, you never talk about it or do anything."

"Am I really that bad?" Candy looked at herself in her mirror. "I mean, if I did something to them, isn't not being around them a good thing?"

"That's not what you do, though," Renjun sighed. "There's time to gather your thoughts, and then there's a time to apologize and talk through it. You skip the talking through it part."

"I'm going to shower and think about it, okay?"

"We're hanging out this weekend!"

"Of course. Bye Jun."

"Bye Candy!!"

"Any new gossip?" Nancy raised an eyebrow. Luna looked over at her from her position on the couch, even though all the blood was rushing to her head from it.

"You mean specifically from Candy, or me too?" Luna asked.

"My life has been boring this week, thank you very much," Candy put her phone down.

"Yeah?" Nancy asked, quickly grabbing Candy's phone. "Who are you texting?"

"Hey!" Candy tried to take it back, but Nancy quickly stood up.

"Ooooh," Luna rolled into a sitting up position, blinking slightly. "Who is it?"

"It's Felix," Nancy hummed. "He just said, 'I don't know how to say this. . .' so I guess we wait and see."

"What are you talking to Felix about?" Luna looked at Candy.

"HE REPLIED!" Nancy yelled out.

"Ugh," Candy stood up. "We're talking about me."

"Felix said, 'You do kinda avoid topics a lot.' I'm disappointed there is no tea," Nancy whined.

"He's right, isn't he?" Candy took her phone back.

"I mean, you did leave the country," Luna sat back down. Candy rolled her eyes.

"You haven't told Jisung you looooooooove him yet, have you?" Nancy guessed.

"I want to do it at the right time."

"I'm sure Jisung thought he did it at the right time when he told you," Luna mumbled, making Candy push her.

"Enough about Candy. Luna, you seemed interested in Felix??" Nancy sat beside her, with Candy on the ground.

"HAHAHAHAHAHA SO THAT NEW DRAMA HUH?!?"
