September 20, 2023 - Housing activists and anti-capitalists in Barcelona disrupted "The District", a convention / party for international real estate speculators and other vulture capitalists. The protesters covered many of the attending millionaire scumbag landlords in colourful powder, forcing them to seek safety behind the lines of riot police. [video]/[video]/[video]

I can’t live in over 99% of housing.
This is not an exaggeration.
“Less than 1 percent of all units are equipped with features that would allow a wheelchair user to live independently.” (HUD.gov)
My experiences of homelessness are inherently tied to this.
[ ID: Red capitalized text on a cream colored background reads: “I can’t live in 99% of housing” the “99%” is much larger than the other text. Below that in pink small font reads: “Less than 1 percent of all units are equipped with features that would allow a wheelchair user to live independently. HUD.gov” End ID. ]

The level of violence and aggression students in protest encampments are facing right now is the same violence people in homeless encampments face on the regular except when their things are thrown away by cops it’s all their important documents, money, medication, memories, everything to their name

Help build yurts for the unhoused people of Camp Nenookaasi in preparation for the oncoming Minnesota winter!
From the campaign description:
We are a group of neighbors in South Minneapolis raising funds to build warm winter structures for unhoused relatives at Nenookaasi Healing Camp. Yurts make winter in Minnesota survivable. With a wood stove and used blankets as insulation, yurts can make a life or death difference in sub-zero temperatures. Below is a breakdown of what each yurt costs:
Slats for walls and roof: $135
Plyboard center circle: $30
5 2 x 4 x 8's for center supports and door: $20
Rope: $50
Hardware: $10
Barrel stove and stovepipe: $35
Large tarp and blankets for insulation: $220
TOTAL cost per yurt: $500
Our goal is to raise $10,000, which would build 20 yurts to house 150-200 people at Nenookaasi Healing Camp this winter. Everyone deserves a warm place to take shelter, most especially Indigenous neighbors facing the cruelty of being unhoused on their own homelands. If you've been blessed with the safety and security of stable housing, please consider sharing those blessings.
As of Oct 14 2023 there’s only about $2k left out of a $10k goal and some of the yurts have already been built!
I know that the world is crazy, life is expensive, and there are plenty of fundraisers and worthy causes to support—this is simply one that’s nearby to me. I’m sharing this link to spread awareness of a really cool project in the hopes that maybe some folks farther away can help too.

“Philadelphia received praise in recent years for its Eviction Prevention Program, which mediates tenant-landlord disputes. Now, another effort to keep people in their homes has proven successful enough for the city to expand it to more neighborhoods: The Right to Counsel initiative gives free legal help to low-income renters facing eviction, on the premise that having an attorney can mean the difference between losing or keeping one’s home.
“Often when tenants are not represented, they’re less likely to show up to court either through a sense of hopelessness or just not understanding the significance of the proceedings. And when they show up to court, they often just enter into whatever agreement feels most expedient or feels like they are going to be able to keep their home,” an attorney told WHYY.
Right to Counsel’s free lawyers often help tenants work out a payment plan for back rent, or just get a little more time before having to move. During the trial phase, 38 percent of participants had representation in court, compared with a citywide rate of about 20 percent.”

Landslide destroys Los Angeles home and threatens at least 2 others
Mar. 13, 2024 - AP
A landslide reduced a Los Angeles house under renovation to a jumble of lumber, pulled the pool and deck away from a second home, and left the pool at a third residence on the edge of a huge fissure early Wednesday.
The slide occurred just before 3 a.m. in Sherman Oaks, a neighborhood of expensive homes about 12 miles (19 kilometers) northwest of downtown. An initial search found no victims, but several people were evacuated from one house, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the landslide, but numerous slides have happened in Southern California due to drenching winter storms that saturated the ground.
Since Jan. 1, downtown LA has had almost 16 inches (41 centimeters) of rain, which is nearly twice what it normally gets by this time of year. By early February, the city had reported nearly 600 mudslides, had re-tagged 16 buildings as unsafe to enter and had yellow-tagged more than 30 others, limiting access to them.

A Sydney woman who escaped brutal domestic violence is facing homelessness with her six-week-old baby after spending more than two years in a temporary private rental while on the priority list for social housing.
Sarah, who is using a pseudonym for safety reasons, is living in a two-bedroom flat in unsanitary and unsafe conditions but was recently asked to leave after she fought a 60 per cent rent increase and asked for repairs.
Sarah, who is in her 30s, has been on the social housing list since August 2021 and on the priority list since December that year, needing a home suitable for herself, two dogs, and now a baby. The pregnancy was a surprise and the baby’s father is not her perpetrator but is not involved much.
The most recent figures for NSW social housing had 51,013 people on the general waitlist and 6519 on the priority list.
Sarah received a one-off state government grant of $4350 for victims of family violence to help her with her bond and initial rent. She was paying $400 a fortnight, which was a reduced price based on putting up with some maintenance issues, such as boarded-up windows in the living room, thinking she would only need to stay for three to six months.
More recently, the ceiling in the kitchen collapsed, and broken plaster is directly overhanging the stove. The lack of proper windows also mean higher power bills now she needs to keep the flat warm enough for her baby.
Despite the problems, the landlord recently tried to increase the rent to $640 a fortnight, which would be 97 per cent of her income from Centrelink.
Rose Jackson, NSW Minister for Housing and Homelessness, said the government had “inherited a housing system that is broken after a decade of neglect”.
“This story is not only heartbreaking, but the harsh reality of our housing crisis in NSW,” Jackson said.
“We need to strengthen our housing system across the board to ensure people don’t fall through the cracks and find themselves unable to access shelter.”
The Greens have been lobbying to cap rent increases to be in line with inflation and end no-grounds eviction.

Did something a little different this year. Since I always do a jack o’ lantern about something I’ve been into that year, this year I did one of the logo for my ballot initiative campaign I’ve been running - No Eviction Without Representation. I also made us this dope float for our place in the local Halloween parade that we were sharing w/ 2 other grassroots campaigns. Obvs. the theme I went for was “RIP bastard landlords” lmao
Happy Halloween y’all <3

Callout for International Solidarity | Week of Action April 21-29 2023
/WHAT/ We are asking folks to autonomously organize solidarity actions in your own communities & let us know: encampmentsolidarity(AT)gmail.com.
We will be putting together a list of ALL solidarity actions in the coming days.
/OUR DEMANDS/ - No Displacement on Stolen Land - Stop the Sweeps / End Bylaw Raids - Homes Not Cops
Week of action begins Friday April 21, with a #StopTheSweeps action in so-called Victoria. More details via @mr.georgejim
/WHY/ #StopTheSweeps Coalition & supporters call for international solidarity in the struggle against colonial state-led displacement. We hope to see multiple cities across Turtle Island show up in care and solidarity with unhoused community members, while continuing to demand an end to inhumane practices of encampment evictions and sweeps.
Actions call on community members to take care of each other in the face of state abandonment. Actions call on all levels of govt to cease ongoing colonial dispossession, to end constant police surveillance and the enforcement of inhumane bylaws in encampments & to immediately respond to the urgent need for safe, autonomous, accessible public housing.
You can begin with material support and a willingness to learn and contribute to #MutualAid. We must show up for those that are criminalized and displaced by our cities.
/BACKGROUND/ Hastings Tent City in the #DTES of so-called Vancouver, has been a site of unhoused community and solidarity the past year in the face of ongoing state-led displacement.
On April 5 & 6, Hastings Tent City was raided by an occupying army of the #VPD & and city workers. Police-led decampment shut down multiple city blocks, restricted access to essential health services, and systematically stole homes and belongings.
The city has not offered dignified housing for those they are evicting, and admits that there is not even adequate shelter space. In the weeks since, the city and cops have continued to wage war on the poor and attempted to “reset behaviour” through daily intimidation & militarized sweeps.

The U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) announced preliminary results of the 2022 Point-in-Time Count showing an 11% decline in Veteran homelessness since early 2020, the last time a full count was conducted. This is the biggest drop in Veteran homelessness in more than five years.
The data show that on a single night in January 2022, there were 33,136 Veterans who were experiencing homelessness in the United States – down from 37,252 in 2020. Overall, this represents a 55.3% reduction in Veterans experiencing homelessness since 2010. via HUD, via futurecrun.ch/good-news
