since falling into my hotd brainrot ive been reminded of one of my gripes which is this misunderstanding that daenerys lived in "abject poverty" (to use the language from an ask you got not that long ago) before her introduction and this is just... not true?

That was when they lived in Braavos, in the big house with the red door. Dany had her own room there, with a lemon tree outside her window. After Ser Willem had died, the servants had stolen what little money they had left, and soon after they had been put out of the big house. Dany had cried when the red door closed behind them forever."

people living in abject poverty don't have access to servants or their own rooms. does this mean their time here would equal the upbringing viserys and daenerys would have had in the red keep? absolutely not. for one thing, daenerys wasn't tutored by a maester or septa which is pretty standard for most noble children of a similar standing, let alone a princess.

They had wandered since then, from Braavos to Myr, from Myr to Tyrosh, and on to Qohor and Volantis and Lys, never staying long in any one place. Her brother would not allow it. The Usurper's hired knives were close behind them, he insisted, though Dany had never seen one.

they would have needed coin for those ships.

At first the magisters and archons and merchant princes were pleased to welcome the last Targaryens to their homes and tables, but as the years passed and the Usurper continued to sit upon the Iron Throne, doors closed and their lives grew meaner. Years past they had been forced to sell their last few treasures, and now even the coin they had gotten from Mother's crown had gone.

what happened with ser willem was absolutely terrible but this idea that daenerys and viserys were living on the streets is inaccurate when their targaryen name is what allowed them to live with the likes of magisters and merchant princes. nor was this something that happened overnight, as indicated by the "years past". they also had "treasures" (meaning jewels) which again no person living in abject poverty would have. those treasures were a lifeline for them but it was a lifeline that a character like nettles never has.

Her brother Viserys had once feasted the captains of the Golden Company, in hopes they might take up his cause. They ate his food and heard his pleas and laughed at him. Dany had only been a little girl, but she remembered. "I have sellswords too."

people living in abject poverty don't feast captains.

it just irks me because when you compare it to the details of nettles' life, it feels wrong to me to believe that both these girls lived in abject poverty. that was nettles. that being said though, that doesn't mean daenerys had an easy time living in exile with viserys. he was a monster to her and she deserves sympathy for that. but while daenerys and nettles' upbringings were similarly tragic (orphaned etc), they were still worlds apart in their differing levels of privilege. it also irks me when they try to use this to compare daenerys to sansa (funny how its often just sansa and not the other starks)

yeah those are all definitely good points. as you say, I don't want to discount that Daenerys had an incredibly stressful childhood (to say the least), much more stressful than The Average Noble by far because she and viserys were actively thinking about and worrying over where their next meal will come from, how to keep a roof over their heads, and they aren't learning jack shit because they don't have a maester, a guardian, a parent, or a single person in all of Essos looking out for them. but it's also like. first of all, we have two canon characters that actually do experience real poverty, the first being davos though he doesn't experience it on page and the second being arya - she's actively avoiding capitalizing on the stark name so she's actually living the life someone who is born poor would live.

and one thing about dany's life - which i've touched on before re: noble girls getting sold in marriages in what a previous anon referred to as slavery - but her last name and the class she was born into if not the class she lived in cannot be disentangled from the life she lived. i pointed it out there that for example, if poor jeyne poole found some dragon eggs in the crypts, used ramsay's dead body to hatch them, and started burning shit down, she's just not amassing the sort of following dany would because she doesn't have the name. and you can see that directly with Nettles, as you point out - despite everyone seeing clearly that Nettles manages to claim Sheepstealer, has a strong bond with her dragon, because she's lowborn and Not White (and not even an acceptable Not White, like dornish, but some ~random brown girl~ from nowhere with no claim to any specific heritage in canon) she's still seen as a temptress, a whore, a witch, all because she claimed a dragon and had some old married dude following her around. dany and viserys regularly trade away their jewels, hype up their titles and heritage, in an attempt to gain basic necessities and this is certainly a marked difference from the way other nobles have lived and important but arya, gendry, hot pie, lommy - they don't get that. lommy just gets killed. and he's not even running his mouth the way viserys is in vaes dothrak. he's just a dumb kid whose leg is broken and asks to be carried and he's murdered for it. hot pie is a normal ass kid who has to learn how to defend himself because it's literally life or death while dany regularly has some sort of guard protecting her.

and again - it's not to say dany doesn't experience a lot of trauma and instability that other nobles will never face that gives her an understanding of violence and war that others don't have. but just like you can't say she was truly "sold" as a slave to drogo because her class is tied to the concept of these nobly born child brides, it's not exactly true that she lives in abject poverty either. it's something a lot more complex than that.

HOTD 01x02 first impressions

ohh I have so many things to say! otto i hate you with a passion. and corlys and rhaenys are not that better imo. also, the trailer made it look like rhaenyra and rhaenys were close, but that dialogue was frosty and if it's for the reason i think then FUCK YOU rhaenys. but having her be jealous of a 15-year-old girl does nothing to make me like her and believe me i want to like her.

also, the scene with laena made me so. uncomfortable. and i know that was the intent, so well done HOTD. on the other hand, i liked the scenes between alicent and viserys and i don't know how to feel about it. i also don't know how alicent feels about it - she's definitely there because of her father, but i don't know if she's just pretending to like viserys or if she actually does. if i look at their interactions alone i think they would be good together. then i remember she's 15 and it makes my skin crawl.

and speaking of 15-year-olds in dubious age gap relationships, my toxic trait is shipping daemon x rhaenyra. come @ me, i don't give a fuck. i can and *will* go down with this ship.

also, i can't stop thinking about what i know of criston cole and i want to bash his face in.

ALSO, I was NOT expecting the opening to have the GoT theme and I swear my heart was not ready. the love i have for ramin djawadi is absolute and all-encompassing. the man is a genius and one of the best composers ever, i swear he could shoot me and i'd be okay with it.

A Song of Ice and Fire (book series and Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon)

Well, it's still going strong! The ultimate bad bitch of a fandom that refuses to die. The fandom that keeps surviving against all odds when death might be kinder, that keeps resurrecting itself and coming back wrong. And I love it for that.

There is always amazing (at times gut wrenching) art in the tag!

So many passionate and WONDERFUL/ thought provoking writers!

Black Sails

It's a fandom that is capable of understanding and enjoying complicated characters and themes

The pure LOVE that the Black Sails fandom has for this story and these characters is absolutely palpable when you are reading the posts/metas/artworks/fics/gifs/shitposts etc.

Just thinking about this fandom makes me remember that I really should rewatch the entire series again and dive head first into this fandom and never look back.

Harlots

I had the BEST time of my fandom life in this fandom (I say had because it has kind of slowed down a lot since the ending of the show- but I still daydream about Harlots often- and I still have a few fics in mind for one day- I definitely need to do a giffing my way through a rewatch soon!)

Everyone was so supportive and because it was so small, people reblogged and commented/supported each other's work with maybe greater enthusiasm than I've found in other fandoms. People also supported ships and character fanworks that weren't their favorite which I thought was so lovely. In the spirit of this atmosphere I read a fanfic for a pair that I initially didn't like and ended up loving it!

This fandom LOVES femslash. No but like really really loves it.

I write fanfic. I've written for asoiaf, got, Harlots, fire and blood, and hotd. Not Black Sails yet! In the spirit of responding in a timely manner I'll just link to my AO3

16. A tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate

In the asoiaf book canon, I love- like LOVE LOVE- that Mance and Rowan are part of the plan to steal Jeyne Poole (thinking she's Arya) from the Bolton’s because they were both (well with Rowan this is not canon just a theory)- like Theon- stolen from their original cultures (Theon was taken from the Iron Islands as a hostage, Mance was taken from the Free Folk by the Night’s Watch, and the theory is that Rowan is an Umber, who was taken by the Free Folk.)

Also I guess I’m always writing dialogue in another language as it is not my first language (1 free fic for whoever can guess what my first language is omfg)

what would be the most fucked-up thing i could do to this show and viewers if hbo gave me the keys to the castle? yeah, i'd make aligon canon. i'd use some of the ideas i sketched out when designing my ideal aegon. and, i know i'm cheating here, but i remember a post circulating about how they should cast olivia cooke in a double role as alys rivers, so of course my brain started firing off. the implications of this insane choice would be TOWERING (heh). maybe have aemond call her 'alicent' once by mistake or, in another parallel scene in KL, have otto call his daughter by the nickname 'alice'. 💀

if hbo executives cruelly refuse my groundbreaking ideas, then i'd just push for aegond. some representation for the slash girlies! let them be what daemon & viserys couldn't!

Hi, I've recently discovered your fic and I absolutely love it! I'm currently reading chapter 8 and Aemond's list is such a great idea. He reminds me of Arya, but your version of him is even more interesting and likeable imho. Just one thing, I believe that the bastards born in KL/the Crownlands are called Waters, so the names of Aemond's nephews on the list would be Jacaerys and Lucerys Waters, not Rivers. This is not a criticism or anything, just a tiny detail a nerd like me noticed😅. Anyway, I'm in love with your writing and would like to know what is your opinion on Alicent in HotD. Her interactions and characterization in SWHHW is just what I imagined her to be as a mother, especially to Aemond after the eye loss. As for the show, I mostly liked her characterization until episode 8 and the whole "you'll make a fine queen" thing. After that I had mixed feelings about the route they decided to take with her.

Also, how did you get introduced to Rhaemond? Hints from the show, Tumblr...? It is an interesting ship with a lot of potential, but sadly not as popular as some others, at least not yet. Thanks in advance for your answer and for giving me something good to read:))

Criticism is fine! It's good! I mean, I would love 100% total praise, but I am honestly amazed that people love this. My ego is well pleased. 😅 Thank you (and everyone) for reading! Like, I would love to say that I write for the simple joy of it, but no. Readers make it worth doing.

I will confess that I didn't research this properly. I went with Harwin Strong > Riverlands > Rivers, but yeah. I've been out of the fandom for a minute and did not think it through. I have to edit this when I'm done so hopefully I remember to fix it. Will make a note.

My view on Alicent... Honestly, I'm almost at a point where I feel like any criticism of any non-Rhaenyra character is unfair because imo the writers aren't actually trying to create characters, they just contort everyone else to fit whichever role they need for Rhaenyra's plot, but okay, pros and cons? What I like versus dislike?

She's too apologetic, for one thing. I like the green dress scene, but it's so rare to see her show some teeth. I get it, that she really doesn't have all that much power, especially after Driftmark when she's watching her husband try to get their son to snitch on her so that he could have her tongue cut out, or have her tried for treason or killed or set aside or whatever Viserys was angling for in that scene, but I still wish she had a more proactive personality. More like Cersei, Catelyn, Margaery, Brienne, etc.

No way is Catelyn being gaslit into apologizing for being angry that Bran got pushed through a window, you know? Cersei might apologize but she'd also probably leave half the city blind by the time she's done getting her vengeance. I wanted some of that.

Half the fandom hates her for wanting Aegon on the throne instead of Rhaenyra and my problem is that she's not doing enough to make that happen. Everyone's living the grimdark life, playing the game of thrones, while she's a high fantasy damsel queen. They make her a sort of 'Trapped In the Wrong Genre'/'Not Built For This' character like Sansa and it's kinda hard to watch tbh.

I mean, she's more of a Good Wife™ than Alicia in the actual show named Good Wife. Rhaenyra wants to put Jace on the throne, and presumably Daemon, the family serial killer, would want to have his own son take the throne, either way, all Alicent's children and grandchildren will have to be killed to fully secure the throne since Westeros plays by Best Claim Wins but also Keep What You Kill rules. Why isn't she leading the charge to prevent that?

From her perspective she has witnessed the destruction of House Velaryon. Laenor, Laena and Vaemond dead, Baela and Rhaena, Daemon's own daughters disinherited and dismissed for Luke, the boy who cut her son's eye out without so much as a slap on the wrist. What does she think is waiting for her children and grandchildren under Queen Rhaenyra, King Daemon and then King Jace and Master of the Tides Luke?

It's not like she doesn't know how Rhaenyra feels about her children. When someone calls for your still bleeding child to be tortured - there's not a lot to misinterpret about that. Fans can be like "No, that happened a whole episode ago. Get over it! She meant to say gently questioned with cookies and tickles! Rhaenyra would never!" but Alicent isn't supposed to be a fan of Rhaenyra in the show.

Post time-skip, she's like “water under the bridge” when only minutes ago they were accusing her of poisoning the king. You cannot "water under the bridge" your enemies throwing you, your father and your children into highway traffic at every opportunity.

It's like they wrote her to be the show's butt-monkey. Daemon and Viserys literally laughing at her when she's just trying to be cordial, Rhaenys of all people gets to give her that "you have failed feminism" speech, Rhaenyra gets her “now they see you" moment...

Not even sure if butt-monkey is the right trope. She might be more of a Chew Toy? I don't understand why they're this determined to make her a permanent victim. With Sansa, there was the sense that she was being punished in a way for getting Ned killed, for being naive, childish, etc... Ned gets punished for his rigidity... People get "punished" in asoiaf world, but it's like Alicent's being punished for "seducing" grown ass Viserys? For not buying in wholesale to her Hightower inferiority and the natural order of Targaryen supremacy?

I don't understand the desire by the writers and the showrunners to keep kicking a character who is down and has never been up.

When you have one opponent being OP, the other one is usually powerful in some other equivalent way. Like superman has physical power but Lex gets social power and genius intellect.

Dr Manhattan is near omniscient/omnipotent but Ozy is smart enough to plan for that.

You would think it's supposed to be Aegon v Rhaenyra because they're both Viserys' Dragonrider children who stand to inherit, but S1 is entirely Alicent v Rhaenyra where Rhaenyra has

physical power in a dragon,

political power in being the named heir and Viserys' clear favorite with Corlys in her pocket,

childbirthing power (5 sons to Laena and Aemma's 0, and Alicent's 1, 2 or 3 depending on how you count it), and

social power with Daemon and Rhaenys killing for her without hesitation (or repercussion). Even Baela who barely knows her eagerly wants to go fight for her.

What does Alicent have to balance it out?

Instead of giving her the cunning tactician card, they make her dependent on Larys the Clubfoot with a Foot Fetish™

God, I'm ranting again.

I hate how Laena was written too, as a "Daemon's trying his best" Good Wife™ but it's hard to think about them as actual characters outside of simply being Rhaenyra's foils so of course I had to fix it up a little in swhhw.😅 It's mostly a fix-it fic for Rhaena, but if I were doing one for Laena or Alicent, I don't think Rhaena and Aemond would have even been born. I'm talking about serious murders from Day 1. 🤣 As soon as Aegon was born, we're going directly into a Queen Regent Single Mom Era and Vhagar is being fed on pedigree prince meat.

I hate HotD with the passion of a thousand sons, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the black characters and the ND/disabled/maimed characters.

Alicent already had my empathy from the beginning. I don't nail pick, but I hair-pull (BFRBs are a bitch) so, it's near impossible for me to be on the side of the Kool Kidz laughing at her, just personally speaking, regardless of how inconsistent/incoherent she's written.

I try to really avoid a lot of the discourse on hotd because of how ableist it is, but you still see so much of it. All the r-words thrown out for Aegon and Helaena, all the eye jokes on Aemond and the idea that Alicent has inferior/disabled children and grandchildren who should be killed... Like, in 2023, it's just sad that this is still a thing, but I'm always going to be team weirdos (endearing).

And being Team Rhaemond... I have a longer post where someone else asked me about it but it generally boils down to Tumblr and AO3. Basically:

The fanart on here... The Aemond fanart and headcanons are hilarious. Rhaena fanart is harder to come by but it exists.

The dinner staredown gifs. I completely misread that scene. I honestly thought Aemond was looking at Rhaena because I thought the kid was Joff. (I am moderately faceblind and I couldn't really tell them apart on first watch). I was also just kinda generally confused by how they were all sitting down to dinner to feast after Vaemond's murder earlier that day.

Rhaena's is painfully underwritten. I've never seen a character more in need of fanfiction than Rhaena.

This pic: (not mine, I just found it on Google but the original has Aegon in it. it's like a fanart "cover" of a real behind the scenes photo of Ewan and Phoebe and Bethany... )

The lack of Daemon-free Laena fics. I went to AO3 looking for Laena fics but I can't read Daemyra. I tried, but I can't and maybe 90% of Laena fics are actually Daemyra fics, so to avoid that I had to filter out daemon and Rhaenyra so I was left with nothing. And then I tried Baela, but they were only Jace x Cregan fics with more Daemyra. And then searching Rhaena led me to Rhaemond, and there were like 20 fics or so and I read them all, and then I came here for more fics but realized that between the Sirius Black tag and the Velaryon Strong!Reader tag and Visenya lives/Daemon's OC daughter that it would be near impossible to get an actual black reader, Velaryon reader, Rhaena, Baela or woc OC fic, and I was like "FFS, how did this fandom get worse? This is 2023!" and I decided on shipping rhaemond out of spite.

Hi, I don't know if using your ask inbox as a 'Lucemond Fandom Confessional' is appropriate but, I wanted to give my two cents if that was okay? As someone who has read and written in this fandom since season 1 wrapped up, I think a lot of people forget that the reason as to why Lucemonders were in their 'Golden Era' wasn't actually because the fanfictions were all that diverse or the great masterpieces that they remember. It was because we were all experiencing and reading them collectively/commenting and raving about the same popular ffs. It was the experience of true fandom mania that elevated those times. There were maybe 20 (at most) authors writing since the beginning who built the fandom and only a few of them, some of them I see you've listed on your other post, who have stuck with the fandom. And even then, they've been on the brink of leaving due to all the unwanted, pushy anons or readers who overstep. I think nostalgia really has influenced certain readers to keep the same attitude from those days and be resistant towards new authors by giving the same old 'Well everything is a/b/o and I don't like that.'. It's really not, and if that's the case, write something you want to see. I used to navigate the fandom fine when there was less than 1k works and didn't like that tag as well, so I'm pretty sure filtering out tags and utilizing ao3's system is really what prevents readers from finding anything new or discovering a trope/plot that isn't the usual Lucemonder's thing. Readers and writers alike have gotten so accustomed to flocking the most popular or recommended fan fiction at the moment (which is no problem, I do the same thing) that they forget to actually try and check out underrated work. Not commenting or supporting is what's really killing the energy of this fandom, not the a/b/o trope or the new wave of fic writers (who have been really good by the way, @Mooniepond and @nocturnal_pollinator being just two off the top of my head, which is why I genuinely believe these people aren't actually looking). Also, your takes and writing are divine, I hope this mouthful finds you well <3

Yeah, it's a bit strange given the tone, but I'm doing my best to approach with reason. I'm the one choosing to engage, so I don't mind, right now.

And yes, I agree with you. I just replied to the other anon about this take of fandom explosion that goes into it (also huge thanks to @jojodacrow again for helping me word things). There appears to be a certain nostalgia attached because of the growth in fandom and community.

Yes, a lot of people are still here! At least, I think so. I don't know who's a fandom oldie and who isn't, so I'll take your word on it.

And I completely agree with you in writing/creating/drawing the things you want to see. That's how I got started here.

There is a valid longing in wishing for "oh more of this trope please!" or "ah, I want more cis M/M!" That's understandable, and I feel that too. But to the folks saying this over and over as a complaint, I ask: is luc_m*nd the only ship you read for in HOTD? Is there another fandom? Or are the fics already there with the intricate filtering system, but you don't want to read it or like it for whatever reason? Something to consider, I suppose.

There is something to be said about underrated work and giving new things a chance (I'll post my thoughts on this later) But yes, I agree that less comments have equaled less engagement. There's an expectation for interaction, which is quite an interesting shift for me, in terms of fandom culture in general. I'll put that in a different post as well.

I agree about commenting culture somewhat. I can't speak for other writers, but I didn't have high expectations at all for my fic. I was blown away actually. I expected maybe 10 people max for a non-smut fic, but I had lovely comments on each chapter and was very happy.

The thing is, I think people should create for themselves first and foremost. If a writer is relying on heavy validation from readers, I don't think that's healthy either. It's okay to want comments, interactions, kudos, but very concerning when you're placing a ton of weight on obligating people to read your work. I feel like there's potential jealousy at play among some writers as well, but that's as an outsider looking in and noticing that behavior from before.

i think it’s the third entry of the tides series, ornery, scandalous & evil. ngl pretty much all i had in mind was that i wanted it to be angsty and cram together as much characters as possible. i think it worked lmao. it also helped to set background on said characters too — like helaena and her kids, daeron and daemon. and the arrival of the very expected lucemond baby which was kinda ruined by luke. oopsie

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

weirdly enough, i think the grace of a rotting corpse is the happiest one. of course circumstances aren’t looking good, but both luke and aemond are tucked away in their happy little moments (which are kind of gross), and as long as alicent doesn’t know, they’ll be fine.

Do you get hate on fics?

lol the first time i posted omega aemond i got flooded with weird comments that suggested i was somehow disrespecting omega luke (??? 💀) but after that, everything was fiiiiiine.

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

i do, the freaky kind— mostly because i like building up ‘intense’ scenes that end up in smut one way or another lol. the smut itself is just smut, but i enjoy the gymnastics around it.

oof. born from delicate violence maybe? listen, that fic was my baby. i loved it and i loved writing it last year, but as weeks went by i got into some bad thoughts and realized that this fic was written at an specific time of my life that i didn’t necessarily want to remember, and between the things to remember, was the inspiration for this fic. i still like it and i do think i still have the original doc for the finale, so perhaps i’ll post it one day, but i feel like posting an ending that’s not even properly edited just for closure will not make me feel right. i also don’t want to post anything that i consider lackluster, since i know a lot of people followed the story last year.

besides that, i had this lucemond thingy in the docs that was very angsty, during the dance era and all. i wrote an entire summary and started the first chapter. i finished and then i just didn’t like the idea anymore, so i left it there.

What are your writing strengths?

not sure about this one. i’d like to think dialogue, or maybe to set a scene. i’m very passionate about setting scenes lmao

What are your writing weaknesses?

definitely typos. also, i finish writing something, i read it a couple of times more to ‘edit’ then post it, so i feel like i don’t spend much time actually editing it ?? hopefully that makes sense. i don’t know how to write fluff without making myself cringe either, so it’s a constant battle

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

in fics that are not mine? i love it. for example, in hotd fics we see a lot of high valyrian stuff and i love when other authors use it as a creative resource. if translations are not available on the fic itself, sometimes i look up the word, sometimes just go with the context of the fic instead. the same with other languages; i don’t have a problem with it. now, writing it for my own fic is a whole different story. i don’t have the patience to add high valyrian in my fics, i prefer to dodge it or just refer to it instead lol. besides english i speak spanish, and if i feel a fic needs dialogue in another language, i’d choose spanish right away instead of trying to use a translator and butchering the poor language.

Favourite fic you've ever written?

so far, my absolute favorite is mean bad dog. i love aemond’s clinginess and instability. i love luke’s moral dilemmas and how he tries to fix it all in his head. yum

How do you feel about Aemond x Daemon? I personally love them as a ship and since Ewan's fave character is Daemon if I'm not mistaken my heart sings every time<3 (SPOILER TERRITORY!)

I think their duel will be absolutely heartbreaking and epic at the same time (that is if the writers don't butcher it..) both because I love these characters and because I love their actors! Ewan and Matt have some cute and wholesome bts interactions from what I've seen and it makes me so happy because I've been a Doctor Who fan ever since it came out and I'd watched World on Fire before HotD was even announced. I just. I never expected such an incredible cast to come together for HotD yknow? So I'm very excited but also kinda scared.. but mostly excited! Daemon x Aemond is my OTP you could say (it's been so long since I've used that term I feel old) but a close second is HelAemond (platonic, romantic, familial, all of the loves!!!) So I hope that in the show they make a point to show us that Helaena and Aemond died on the same day, regardless of whether they had romantic feelings for one another.

As for Alys, I'm mostly indifferent toward her but I hope that they treat her and her story well! I look nothing like her (I'd look like Laena or maybe Rhaena maybe if I had white locs lol) so I can't relate to the sentiment of us all being Alys lol but I'm glad you guys can! I'm also excited for Nettles! I like to think she's Daemon's bastard or someone he thinks of as his adopted child maybe (while fully ignoring the claims that they had illicit relations lol)

Is there another character or story arc you're excited about? And I'm sure you've answered sth similar before but I can't remember- would you prefer a more manipulative Alys? I think I would bc homegirl is probably too old to play wit her heart on her sleeve but I'd like to see her and Aemond actually develop genuine feelings for one another! Which actually reminds me of another point (so sorry for this massive ask btw 😭) being what will Borros Baratheon do? Will he allow one of his daughters to marry Aemond? If so, who and would Aemond really keep a mistress in Alys? How ironic that he may or may not have fathered a bastard with Alys when he detests his nephews (even before Luke took his eye) but anyway that's enough of my ramblings 🙅🏿‍♀️ I just got carried away cuz you seem like a really pleasant person and your stories are beautiful haha bye🏃🏿‍♀️

Personally, I can't view Aemond and Daemon together, as a ship. Nothing from season one (or the book) has given me reason to view them as one. Aemond is clearly intrigued by Daemon's relentlessness, and if there were anyone he would want to emulate, it may be Daemon? As Ewan said, they both stand to inherit nothing, and who have to carve their own way out in the world. But anything romantic? Nope. 1000% especially not after what Aemond caused. I love them as rivals, cause they're quite similar in fire that their fight would just be frickin amazing.

I'm on the same boat with you about Helaemond. There's just something so beautifully tragic and yet soft at the same time when it comes to those two. I know I'm reaching but if Alys does manipulate Aemond, and it turns out he was in love with Helaena all along? And they die on the same day?? (You're so right, they need to make a point of this in the show) *buckets of tears incoming*

They truly did an amazing job with the cast. I know they don't all look book-accurate but the performances are so good that it's really not a big deal. Plus, it's so nice that you can see yourself in characters like Laena or Rhaena. And about Nettles? (I'm still not in that part of the book, so I don't know about her and Daemon) But then again, if he does cheat on Rhaenyra with her, it's really just the word of an Archmaester or Mushroom or whoever, so it's all up for interpretation. It kinda frustrates me that the book is written that way, cause I just want to know what actually happened, y'know? I want to know the true motivations and thoughts of the characters - not the perspective of a bunch of men 😂 ughhhh

I still don't know what to feel about Aemond and Alys. One thing that does give me the ick is that he was taken advantage of by an older woman when he was a child (13 yrs old!), and this may have distorted his romantic/sexual perceptions. I believe there was something said about Aemond preferring older women, and I hope this did not stem from childhood trauma. If he is actually, purely, interested in Alys, then that's fine. But you're right, she is meant to be 40-ish, while he's 19/20, so that's another issue. (But then again - Daemyra 🙃) But at least, far as we know, Rhae was not taken advantage of by Daemon (she was 18, in ep 4, which is still painfully young) but she seemed to have engaged with him willingly (and Daemon was the one to pull back and stop) But then again, age gaps are treated very lightly in this series - ANYWAY - no matter what, I hope the whole Alys/Aemond thing is portrayed well.

I think that whole Baratheon betrothal is done for. Plus, the poor girl watched Aemond chase a child with a knife 😂 minus points hahaha

More thoughts from an Alicent fan: I feel like a lot of problems within the fan base of both GoT and HotD come from the need to pit women against each other. So many Sansa fans hate Dany and vice versa but I don’t think they really organically hate these characters, I think they just take it on as a part of loving one female character, that she has to have a hated female counterpart. I can’t think of a single major female character I truly hate from either series. I was never a big Ygritte or Mysaria fan but I don’t hate them. Dany is my all time favorite character and I relate to her so much and other fans have assumed I must hate Sansa when really the two of them have a lot of parallels in their narratives and the fact that the show didn’t explore that pisses me off. Likewise people will assume I don’t like Rhaenyra just because I like Alicent. It’s silly. Rhaenyra deserves the throne and I love her! I think some fans just like to have conflict and they like to be opposed to something so they’ll always find reasons to hate once they’ve “picked a side.”

Hello anon! I will answer your ask after ages, sorry.

So, I feel that my point of view is relevant in this discussion since I initially was a Sansa Stan, before even watching GoT, when it first aired. Yeah. So in short, everybody started watching GoT all of the sudden, I wasn't really into a lot of TV shows at the time, mainly books and cinema, and I was sick of all the buzz. Part of the buzz was all of my friends saying I HATE SANSA GOD I HATE HER SO MUUUUUUCH all the time all around. When I asked guys wtf did Sansa do and you hate her so fucking much, they were all like SHE'S WHINING AND SNIVELLING ALL THE TIME AND SHE DOESN'T DO ANYTHING USEFUL SHE'S ANNOYING AF AND ARYA IS SO COOOL BLABLABLABLA yeah noise in my ears basically. Then I realised that this girl actually didn't do anything that bad it's just that she was a spoiled little girl being annoying at her sister and that's literally it. This was a story about literal monsters and everybody was literally bitching about Sansa. Literally. So I became her stan purely out of reaction at how unfairly she was treated by the fandom initially. Of course later on I actually became invested in ASOIAF and GOT and my interest in Sansa diminished, I saw how stupidly the writers treated her and Arya's arc, it literally didn't make any sense, Arya was indeed almost destroyed just to make Sansa be more important than she needed to be. That's a fact.

So fact number one, people did in fact hate Sansa from the start. There was actual hate there since the beginning. I remember it in my circle of friends and I wasn't in any internet fandom at the time thank god.

Fact number two, the arc that the show adopted gave birth to deranged Sansa stans on the basis of a huge mischaracterisation of Sansa. She was given the arc of other characters, she was made the perfect victim of abuse, again and again, and then she was given a ruling arc, then the joke of a ship that is Jonsa appeared and the combination of all these things plus the internalised misogyny of all parts involved completely ruined the fandom I think. Sansa stans hated Dany because she got in the way of their ship and she was also pretty and hot plus powerful, which Sansa wasn't, Dany and Arya stans hated Sansa because they were sick of the mischaracterisation and stupid script, and it all went downhill.

It's the writing of the show that caused this, mainly, by creating a conflict that shouldn't exist and is downright stupid. There should be no conflict between Sansa and Dany, none, zero. The North shouldn't be represented by Sansa, it should be represented by Jon Bran or Arya, they should have had the conflict with Dany, not Sansa. It's Arya's storyline that strongly parallels Dany, not Sansa. Sure ok both were raped, but I vehemently REFUSE to see women characters as just victims of abuse. Just because two women were victims of abuse doesn't mean they have things in common. Being victims is not all there is to these characters. Arya had the same experience as Dany (fugitive, restless, passionate with justice, anti conformist, challenging males, seeking home plus their identity crisis) all these things make them similar that's why a conflict-alliance-any sort of contact between them could have been very interesting. Instead we got this stupidity that was season 7 and 8.

Frankly this never-ending war between Sansa stans and Dany stans is extremely exhausting to me. But I understand it because that's what being in a fandom does to you. Now that I am in HOTD fandom I am immerged in it and I get it. Of course I am not objective, I love Dany, I love Sansa, but I don't believe she should be Queen in the North. I don't have a problem with Sansa but her stans are in fact deranged. They are deranged because they can be, because the plot gave them enough ground to work on. Ironically, I would have loved Sansa much more if I never came in contact with her stans. Same with Alicent.

TL;DR: Conflicts between female characters are inevitable, and necessary, when their interests are diametrically opposed. Alicent and Rhaenyra are enemies and should be enemies. Yes you can sympathize with both, but that doesn't stop you from picking a side. You can pick the side of the Blacks and sympathise with Alicent. Sansa and Dany conflict shouldn't even exist, it's not like Alicent and Rhaenyra's case. The writers created that conflict and divided the fandom for nothing. In both cases, a great deal of the hate is actually a reaction to the deranged stans, not the characters themselves.

In any case anon, if you can avoid the fandom war, DO IT. It's better. Sympathise with any person you want, nobody can say that just because you love one character you can't love the other. That's stupid.
