Phasing - Re: Leah, Billy, Jacob
[Why Leah didn't phase when the Cullens first returned, was Billy Black ever a wolf and why Jacob phased after the Cullens left]
In the Twilight universe, some members of the Quileute Tribe can 'phase' into werewolves under a few conditions:
They must be a direct descendant of Taha Aki, the first Quileute to phase (early 13th century). These descendants "are born with twenty-four chromosomal pairs rather than the twenty-three pairs of a normal human"
"This extra chromosome will not have any effect on the carrier if he or she is not in close proximity to vampires during all or part of the critical time between the onset of puberty and the age of twenty-five. If the potential werewolf is not exposed to vampires within this window of time, transformation will never occur. It is the scent of the vampires that triggers the reaction.."
When in close proximity to vampires, it is always the youngest in each family's lineage to phase, becoming a "protector" against the vampires
If the youngest member in a given family's lineage is not between the onset of puberty and 25, they will not phase and neither will their parents/elders
(It is "based on two factors: heritage and the proximity of vampires")
The other factors worth considering are:
"One factor affecting which members of the tribe transform is the number of vampire scents in the area"
"... the pack has usually consisted of three members. With most vampires traveling alone or in pairs, there was never a need for more..."
Members with the strongest blood ties phase first. As more vampires are present, tribe members with weaker blood ties start to phase
Until 2006, only male carriers of the gene had gained the ability to transform
The Cullens first moved to Hoquiam (aprx. 100 miles from La Push) in 1936. At this point, the confirmed "protectors" are Ephraim Black, Quil Ateara II and Levi Uley. Tracing their lineages it is probable that none of them had children that had reached transformation age yet. Billy Black was not born until the late 1950's so he obviously couldn't have phased here. However, the Cullens stayed in the area until 2003 when they moved to Forks (only ~16 miles from the Quileutes in La Push). Though Ephraim Black was likely deceased by this time, his grandson Billy was well past 25 (about 50) and Jacob Black was born but was only 13, meaning neither of them could transform (cond. 2).
Let's put a pin in that to quickly talk about Jacob. It makes sense that he didn't phase in 2003 when the Cullens arrived in Forks because he was only 13. But the Cullens left Forks in September of 2005 and Jacob didn't phase until February, 2006. There were only 2 vampires present in Forks when Jacob first phased, Laurent and Victoria. The Cullen family consists of 7 vampires, so why didn't he transform while they were around? Well, the transformation had actually already started before they left. The first sign of transformation in male gene carriers is a "noticeable growth spurt". When Jacob goes to see Bella at the prom in May, 2005 she comments on how much Jacob has grown.

(Twilight, Epilogue)
So this leaves me with one question unanswered. Going back to 2003, when the Cullens moved to Forks, the only Quileute who phased was Sam Uley, who was 17 at the time. But so was Leah Clearwater. So why didn't she also phase? At this point in time, there had never been a female werewolf, but Leah did eventually become the first around March of 2006, also after the Cullens had left. We can assume that the transformation had began before they left, just like Jacob. So the question is:
Why didn't Leah phase when Sam did in 2003?
There is no definitive answer to this that I can find. The real answer is "Smeyer didn't think that far" but, in universe, it seems like female werewolves were supposed to only be possible under exceptional circumstances. Perhaps, it was supposed to be the passing of her father that triggered her transformation, but we can rule that out because, when she first phased, "She was arguing with her mother about her mood swings, and her father joined the conversation in support of her mother. Leah was so angry that her whole body started shaking, and then she exploded into a werewolf...". So if Smeyer's intended reasoning is "exceptional circumstances", she either forgot or there just isn't a real reason, at least not one that I could find.

Random thought but I think the wildest part of Twilight is how Smeyer wrote out the dynamic b/w the tribe and the Cullens and at no point was like 'oh moving like right next to ur mortal enemies is a dick move'. Like, there are SO MANY ways to have roughly the same affect on the storyline that don't involve this. Literally just have the tribe be like, ultimately not really beefing with the Cullens but generally avoiding them because yknow. Bloodsucking predator. He'll even post twilight there are ways to make this less shitty or at least do MORE woth the whole Cullens were here decades ago stuff.

"this is a sane distance to have" askdjkdjfjsdkfjksjdflkjfjksd
also i'm pretty sure we've talked abt this before, but last time they were in hoquiam, which is SIGNIFICANTLY FARTHER AWAY! the cullens were really like "remember those people who hated us so much making a treaty to stay away was the only way to avoid bloodshed? the only large group of people who know our secret and could expose us? yeah, let's move closer to them." like??? dumb bitch hours, truly.
and i know it's like that bc smeyer wrote all of this into twilight without intending to do the shapeshifter plotline at all and then the series took a hard left in new moon and suddenly there were werewolves and not just humans who knew about vampires, but still. in-universe it's so wild

As ya'll know, I love me some time travel stories.
So I was thinking about what would happen if Jacob was sent back in time to be around Edward for like a year before he turned into a vampire.
He'd have the chance to stop Carlisle and let Edward die.
But Jacob grew close to Edward in that one year, learned to appreciate Edward after seeing him in a new light.
He's there when Edward's dying. He's there when Carlisle nurses him.
Carlisle doesn't know what Jacob is, just knows that hes different, kind of like him in a way.
He watches Edward's mother die, watches as she begs Carlisle to save her son before she does.
Carlisle doesn't do anything yet. He can't while Jacob is there, so he acts like he doesn't quite know what Elizabeth means.
It's now or never. Let Edward fall in love in his second life.
Or maybe prevent his pack from ever shifting and allowing his family to live a normal life. Without Edward being there to telepathically communicate with the Quileute wolves, maybe they would have killed Carlisle and his family before they got a chance to make the treaty. Maybe Carlisle would never have gone to Hoquiam in Washington at all.
Bella would live. Harry would live. Sam would still be with Leah. No newborn war. All those innocent people would live. Riley would live. James. Laurent. Victoria.
All of it was up to Jacob. Right here, right now.
Would Jacob do it? Would he let Edward die?

hello! i am here to ask you to go on for days and days about jacob's great-great aunt susannah black, because this sounds SUPER interesting
First, thank you for giving me reason to talk about Susannah, I've grown quite fond of her :) Second, sorry this took a minute! I realized that most of my thoughts and ideas were not organized and I had to fix that lol.
So, canonically, we only know that she exists and is one of Ephraim's sisters. She's in the Black family tree that exists on the wiki (one of the three that makes me want to gouge out my eyes with a rusty spoon they're awful and 1000% the reason I made my own), and we know that she and Deborah are twins. As the Cullens originally came to Hoquiam sometime in the mid-30s (the treaty was signed sometime in 1936), we can assume Susannah was alive at that point. For my purposes, she was born in 1915 and was 21 when the treaty was signed.
Therefore, when the Cullens returned in 2003, which is only 67 years later, it's not unreasonable to assume that people who were around during their first stay are still alive, though we're told canonically that all of the last pack has died by this point (also a BOLD choice for Carlisle to make- Mr. Cullen, MD should know a normal human lifespan by this point if he's been alive and practicing medicine for centuries). Therefore, Susannah, now in her late 80s and now a tribal elder, remembers exactly who the Cullens are and is not happy about the fact they returned.
She is also one of the remaining native speakers of the Quileute language and worked with the tribal school to develop the curriculum they teach, in addition to being a talented artisan and fantastic cook.
Having been there for Ephraim during his initial phase and adjusting to the role of alpha (while also likely dealing with the OIA agents and the creation of the tribal constitution), she is not a fan of the 'let's leave this group of teenagers to deal with this life-altering transformation alone' policy that seemingly exists canonically and becomes one of the pack's fiercest defenders and advocates.
She can be a bit reserved but will fight tooth and nail for those she loves, which she does quite often for the pack. But good luck getting back into her good graces if you break her trust.
Also! This gives me a reason to change Jacob's suspicions about the pack in New Moon pre-phase. The idea that most of La Push thought Sam was a cult leader is just silly (forming a gang, maybe, but cult activity? come on). Instead, Jacob is extremely confused and suspicious about why Sam, Jared, Paul, and later Embry are suddenly spending so much time with his Auntie Susannah
