Idk if anyone else in the fandom listens to fun., but I'm a big fan of pretty much the whole Some Nights album. I was listening to it last week (yes, even the Some Nights - Intro, which I don't vibe with) because it was speaking to me in terms of ATLA characters (certain songs reminded me of certain characters).

"But Turtle, Nate Reuss wasn't focused on ATLA when he was writing this album"

Ok, and? I'm gonna have some fun with this!

So here's each song and the character I think it fits (not all are exact fits & not every song is included, but most are)

1. Some Nights - Sokka

"This is it, boys, this is war/what are we waiting for?" feels very Sokka to me, especially since he considers himself a warrior and is the protector of Wolf Cove after Hakoda and the other men leave to fight the fire nation. Also "I still see your ghost" could reference Kya, but more likely Yue, since Sokka says that he sees Katara's face when he tries to remember his mother. The line about the martyr reminded me of Suki. Ok also the "miss my mom and dad for this" line?? Come on. Ok BUT "my heart is breaking for my sister and the con she called love/and then I look into my nephew's eyes" is just SCREAMING a Zutara or Kataang fic of some sort. Come on, right?? It's just begging to be written. Overall, this is very existential crisis-Sokka to me.

2. We Are Young - Katara

Ok so I wasn't fully sure what song to give Katara and it just didn't feel right to leave her out so I deadass just gave her this one like 5 minutes ago, but it still works. It would also be AU-based, but hear me out. I'm assuming y'all are most likely to know this song out of all of them. So Katara's at a bar after breaking up with her boyfriend (Aang) and the Gaang's all here. "My seat's been taken by some sunglasses askin' bout a scar" would be Zuko asking about the scars on Katara's hands that she couldn't fully heal after Aang's firebending accident. "But between the drinks and subtle things/the holes in my apologies/you know I'm trying hard to take it back" feels very Aang to me, especially since he's immature. Then right after, I feel like it switches to a more Zutara vibe for most of the song. Also "the moon is on my side/I have no reason to run" with Katara is such a sick combo omg.

3. Carry On - Zuko

The lyrics are very angsty. "You swore and said we are not/we are not shining stars/this I know, I never said we are" feels like a very Zuko & Iroh interaction to me. And also "though I've never been through hell like that/I've closed enough windows to know you can never look back" !!!! Like that feels very Season 3 Zuko to me. Also, no matter what, Zuko is forced to carry on, whether it's with Ozai, Azula, the Gaang... Although don't get me wrong, Zuko does take back his destiny, but I'm referring more to how he can't give up. Also Ursa tells Zuko and he later says how he struggles and fights, even though it's hard. "And we talked and talked about how our parents will die/all our neighbors and wives" Zuko is very familiar with the concept of mortality, he nearly died and he loses his mother at a young age. I'm sure he worries about when Iroh will die, as well as his friends. I feel like Zuko has a line about people leaving him, but I can't find it. Ok next point "and it's nice to know when I was left for dead/I was found and now I don't roam these streets/I am not the ghost you are to me" is very reminiscent of Zuko's relationship (or lack thereof) with Ozai. Also "may your past be the sound of your feet upon the ground" feels like a very Iroh line. Last point, "on our darkest day, when we're miles away/so we'll come and we'll find our way home" is very reminiscent of Zuko's redemption arc and how he returns home and retakes his place in the line of succession and becomes Fire Lord.

4. It Gets Better - Katara?

Honestly the "yes, I know it hurts at first/but it gets better" reminds me a lot of Katara. I also liked the line about fire in the sky and snow on the ground. Not too much else to say.

5. All Alone - Mai

I really encourage you guys to listen to this song, it was really interesting. The lyrics reminded me of Maiko, especially how Mai seems to not care about anything. The girl's voice reminded me a lot of Mai throughout the series, especially her interactions with Zuko. "I gave her to you/I don't need a toy/I thought you might appreciate it/I don't like the way it moves" reminds me of their interaction when Zuko tries to give Mai the shell on Ember Island. "How do you cry with inanimate eyes/you're never gonna smile/with the way that you're wired" also reminded me a lot of Mai's character throughout the series.

(I really like All Alright, but wasn't sure who it would fit well with)

6. One Foot - Toph

"I put one foot in front of the other" is very Toph, she is a fighter first and foremost. "I don't need a new love or a new life" also feels very her, Toph doesn't care as much about the more material things compared to the rest of the Gaang. I'm sure there's more that can be said about this connection, but I didn't really vibe with the song so much. Sorry Toph.

7. Out on the Town - Aang

Okay, Aang fans, I'm asking you to stick with me here. "Cause I know I'll never take the time/to unpack my missteps and call all of our friends" feels very much like season 3 Aang, where he doesn't face consequences for his actions and Bryke kinda places him on this pedestal of sorts. Also, this is a kataang breakup song to me. The chorus really feels like Aang to me, putting his feelings before those of other people, causing a scene, there being consequences (that he somehow gets out of, but that's not today's discussion). "But I'm waiting for the day you come back and say/'hey maybe I should change my mind'" reminds me of the first 2 times Aang kisses Katara and how he expects her to change her mind on how she feels about him. Also the repetition of "open up your heart".

Overall, I found the entire album to be very Zuko-coded.

Already posted this on twitter but tumblr tends to be a better place for this sort of thing. so. just basically gonna copy-paste the qt I did for this.

so, interesting thing that i feel is a prime example of why this "problem" is utterly made up bullshit capitalist propaganda.

back in the 90s, OKC was essentially dying. downtown was one of the worst in the nation. gang infested, falling apart, roads not only in severe disrepair but very poorly planned, and utterly reliant on offices nobody wanted to work in for good reason. it was BAD. (edit: also the 1980s recession hit here especially hard so it was suffering in general from the fallout of that, too.)

enter the MAPS program. a 66 month long temp raise on sales taxes to completely revitalize, restructure, and rebuild our downtown from the ground up. nothing like this had ever been done before in the nation, not on this scale. and keep in mind OK has notoriously been very red.

this was a bipartisan project (and continues to be still) and believe it or not got some of the most support during republican rule. i don't think there's ever been a project proposal before or since that received such outstanding support by voters either. everyone wanted it.

with MAPS our downtown got a convention center, music hall, trolley system, baseball stadium, library, arena, new streets, and like 3 miles of river dammed and moved to create a canal and set the foundation for future projects on the river itself.

by the 2000s, downtown was completely transformed. MAPS was so successful that another one was proposed and passed. And then 2 more.

since the original MAPS, theres been new parks added, river sports, cultural centers, hiking/walking trails, more street upgrades, a senior wellness center, state fair improvements, public transit upgrades, and too many infrastructure improvements to name.

OKC is now a contender to other major attractive downtowns in the nation. it is now a place you WANT to go. we got our own NBA team now that shaped some of the best in the league currently. it's one of the few walkable areas in the whole state too. its honestly beautiful.

point is, we got here by adding enrichment, art, entertainment, and public spaces. not more offices. not more soulless cooperations. not more industry. those were the problem, getting rid of them and replacing them with ways to improve happiness and community was the solution.

and we did it in one of the most socialist ways possible. in one of the reddest states in the nation. if your downtown is dying bc nobody wants to return to offices, then your downtown was dead already to begin with. work should not be the reason a downtown thrives.

so don't believe the capitalist propaganda for a single second. we have 30 years of evidence right here in OKC to prove that shit wrong at every turn. and any politician who spouts that rhetoric is 100% bought and paid for by some major corp.

anyway MAPS is really cool and everyone should read up on it https://okc.gov/government/maps-3/maps-history and advocate for similar projects like it in your own metro. if one of the poorest, most conservative and oft forgotten about places in the nation can do it, any city can.

and PS: all of this was happening at the same time as the Murrah bombing recovery - at the time the largest domestic terrorist attack in the nation. so like. there really is no excuse for a city to allow their downtown to die other than politicians licking the boots of big corps.

PPS: the newest MAPS was just passed a couple of years ago and is the largest one of them yet. we'll be getting more parks, a youth center, another senior center, a mental health and addiction facility, more public transit, more upgrades to streets, a new animal shelter, additions to the state fairgrounds, a civil rights center, lots of beautification, a multipurpose stadium, and three pretty fucking amazing projects that are worth going into more detail about. A family justice center - a temporary one exists but this one will be permanent. this is a really fucking cool place that helps victims of sexual assault, human trafficking, elder abuse, domestic violence, and children who've been through traumatic situations. a diversion center - this will essentially be a way to get people out of the prison system and back into society. it's for low-level, non-violent offenders that really shouldn't have landed in prison in the first place. our prisons are fucked around here, and so extremely overcrowded. I'm sure that could be said for most around the nation. this is more like rehabilitation and its really awesome to see. and lastly, a wholeass chunk dedicated to fighting homelessness - the first time this has really, truly been addressed with logical solutions. i gotta give big fuckin kudos to everyone involved on this one - its something they discussed openly with citizens, something they asked for suggestions about, something they've wanted to solve rather than just hide and needed the public's help to figure that out. the goal is to completely eradicate it by shifting focus to a housing-first program, create truly affordable housing (of which there is an extreme lack of in the heart of OKC), and offer services at every step of the way to make sure once a person is housed, they are able to also support themselves and stay housed. with $50mil from MAPS and $400mil from outside sources, this will be the largest of any of the projects to date and I am SO thrilled about it.

Marginalia #59: this reminds me of Olivier Messiaen. He was famous for using bird call as inspiration, even transcribing bird calls and writing them into his compositions.

Chant: I can kinda see how this is like a chant. It’s not got a defined meter or beat, and it centers around one predominant tone. Interesting!

Copenhagen One: super atmospheric - perfect for sleepy time. It reminds me of something in particular, but I can’t think of what. Could certainly be used as film score.

Why I Still consider myself a transcel/incel even if I have a bf.

The reason why I still consider myself a transcel, even more then before, is that this relationship is long distance, VERY long distance because I’m strictly t4t, and yeah. I feel for someone online. Now I know what your thinking.

With who? I can’t be t4t here, let alone if most people can’t find trans people irl, the trans ppl Ik are ether taken or NOT in the mental space to be in a relationship. (Or just trenders.)

LMAOOO. I’m not putting myself through that again. Dating a cis woman is the absolute worse, they manipulate and play mind games with you, so you can fit in their butch lesbian fantasy. I can’t have sex with cis guys, no matter how sexually satisfying that might be, because I’ll know he’ll see me as just a woman.

I feel t girls wouldn’t be as humiliating or traumatizing as the others I listed, but I’d say it’s pretty demasculizing for a chick top you. But I’d still take that chance, because if you couldn’t tell. I’m desperate. However, I only met two trans girls irl, and they’re both in long term relationships so we can rule out.

As you can see, this is why, even with a wonderful online boyfriend who lives in the middle of nowhere. I’m still, unfortunately, a transcel.

renaming characters: s1, s3 and s4

i just decided to compile all of them in one post since we all know these characters pretty well, and by that i mean i know SOME of the names from season 4.

season 2 / season 5 (i guessed/named them because i didn't play the season so... no stakes there!)

SEASON 1

allegra - she's very powerful, *clears throat* hot, and allegra as a name can be that...? i don't know, i feel like amber resumes this character so much, especially if you say it with her accent... amba... every amber in reality tv is a little too intense and we know she's the queen of cringey overreactions.

erikah - always thought laura would suit her better. i don't know why but i don't like erikah for her, but i think laura has a je ne sais quoi that she, the character, also has. she's very complicated and quite feeble at times, but her face tells me laura.

jen - she's clearly a fucking ashleigh. not for nothing, i know a lot of great ashleys', but the -eigh makes it so obnoxious and that's perfect for homegirl, because right off the bat she's claiming vanilla swirley hair romeo and ashleigh's tend to be like that... tell me you can't picture jen in a 2014 pinterest gear up in a pumpkin field wearing uggs and a fedora, i dare you to tell me she's not the type!

talia - is her full name natalia? jake - this is such a boring name for someone so full of flavor, i can't! he's not dabbed in caucasity nor adolescence, so why the fuck was he named jake???? mateo though... mateo is a fucking name, ok? it can be italian, spanish, portuguese, it doesn't matter. jake is such a 13-yo momma's boy name... ugh, no. if the guy has a collar popped like a fucking vampire and is walking around the villa with that hair, jake is not his name. PERIOD.

mason - i honestly like the name, just not for him. i always thought oliver would be a curveball because so is mason's lack of personality. let's face it they made a huge oopsie when interchanging levi's characteristics with his when coupled up with mc. mason is a drummer turned model, how the fuck did you manage to make him boring??? anyway, his face, to me, is giving oliver.

miles - he deserves a douche name because he has that chest piece, and any guy who displays such... awful tattoo deserves to be punished. fuck it, let's name him terry, short for terrible.

jasper - i mean, i HATE this name, and well, his face and hair is giving elité father tease, so i want to name santiago, because oh my god, every santiago i've met sucks ass and is a creep. the guy has a pet cobra, he HAS to be named santiago!

tim - this is the ONLY character who fits in the jake genre, because he looks 18 and clueless (affectionate). i feel like liam is somehow fitting for him, mostly because that's the go-to name in teen dramas... and usually the liam's are also clueless.

levi - why do his mates call him romeo is beyond me, homeboy has NO GAME. NONE. he's the personification (along with mason) of pretty privilege. if you stick a pin on his head it might deflate, because there's nothing going on behind those average eyes. fuck levi, his name is eric, basic and common.

rohan - since his name has multiple origins, and we don't know for sure his ethnicity (not that it matters, i know brazilian boys who are named tyler, so...) i'm naming him gael. he's a gael, argue with the wall.

cherry - have you ever seen a courtney??? because that's her! and she might be the type to say "although i have the same name as kourtney, khloe is my spirit animal" and you can't tell me she doesn't.

reese - tristan. fuck reese.

sammi - i would love to name her according to her ethnicity, because sammi apparently is hebrew. for instance, if she's korean: seong-min is perfect, because it's a genderless name and so it's sammi. also, i headcanon her as enby (she/them). if she's japanese, aya, because it can mean "brilliant fabric" and that's what she's fucking wearing. if chinese, yu ming, which means jade brightness, again... fitting! i like sammi, but i think it was a missed opportunity to name her in what could be her background culture, since lots of us don't know much, if anything about those countries. i for one didn't have any asian history classes in my school curriculum, which is weird because we had ajapanese immigration here, so like... MAKE IT MAKE SENSE. anyway, these are the names i would give her.

lucy - that's a rebecca that refuses being called becky, and will have a fit if you do. i don't have much to say about her, lucy can die in a hole.

elladine - she gives me "i have two L's in my name" but it's not elladine. it's something like danielle, which is really pretty and the first name that came to mind when i saw the teasers with her.

aj - this is a great name for her, i have to say! if anything i would've taken the same route and either use an acronym, like aj, or a "boy name" like robin. i honestly love that name for girls and enby's.

bill - honestly the caucasity is too much for me, and i have to say, the name has to fall into that category, so i'm naming him ryan! he's childish and you can tell nobody has told him to shut the fuck up ONCE in his life. his name is ryan and you can argue with the jar of mayo sitting next to him.

camilo - i don't like this for anybody, it's such an ugly name in my opinion. if they wanted to name him a latin name they could've gone with so many other prettier options, and to me he looks like a cauã (the last a is pronounced ahn). listen, cauã is indigenous from brazil, BUT it's so fitting for him, you'll have to trust me on this one! they're athletic and also very... um... let's say "active", and by that i mean they're all whores (affectionate). it's perfect for him.

harry - if zhong is his surname (and it's chinese), then i'm choosing my favorite boy name, which is jun hie. ((fun fact, zhong can also be a first name, and it can mean devotion, among other things that don't even slightly mean that, but i'm focusing on devotion)). harry looks like someone who deserves a cute name that has a deep meaning, and jun hie means outstanding.

nicky - what a bland ass name for someone so pretty! i like jamal for him, and i could stand here all day trying to come up with an excuse but truth be told, it's because of jamal sims (the coreographer), leave me alone he's hot ok!

seb - i actually think a cat name is perfect for him lol it's either seb or something stupid like axel or dash, which makes him INCREDIBLY EMBARRASSED ABOUT IT.

miki - i like it but i think something like sakura would be perfect. there's something about her that reminds me of the petals' colors... she's a pretty chill girl, and somewhat delicate, so i like sakura for her.

genevieve - i think it's perfect! it's dainty but has some strength to it. personally i think if i came up with a name for her it wouldn't be as good as genevieve. hate the nickname though, viv is really basic. call her vieve, man, what are you doing??

iona - i would never think of this name because i've never heard it before meeting her, but she gives me the vibe of a girl who has a big name but cool, short nickname, like andressa or andrea but the nick is andi. the choice is andi, you pick the original.

ciaran - this is a trent and you can argue with bill's mayo jar. he might be irish but his stance is the fucking white american who is a nice guy. i don't like his personality, or the lack of, and trent is a brainless guy, just like him.

tai - it's fucking perfect for him actually! when i saw him on the tease i thought of taika, tai or koa (joyful), but personally i think tai or koa are very fitting.

yasmin - whenever i see her i think of the exact color of iris, so that's the name. plus, she gives "hemp-skirt-wearing and having lesbian sex in an orange tent after lolapalooza" tease and that's why iris fits.

rafi - i don't like the name rafi for him, so... husani. it's pretty accurate, since it means 'handsome'. i also like how it sounds and i think it fits with his personality since that's... the only personality he has. "ah, but vena he talks about his brother-" i'm gonna stop you right there, because he does, but um... how many times did we get to see his depth? exactly.

lily (liliana) - she looks like a bruna to me. it is italian but we do have a lot of bruna's here, and honestly? THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME, and they look like that.

angie - she gives me strong vibes of alexandra, in a way that she hates her name and prefers a gender bent nickname, like alex. i don't like angie for her.

lexi - this absolute excuse of a person is a jessica to me, but the bad type. you know what i'm talking about, the type you have to call her out in the middle of a discussion because once again she's giving "THAT'S MY OPINION!!" tease. i hate this character so much, she's 46% of the reason why i stopped playing the season.

najuma - i love it but i would never think of this name since i've never heard it before. if someone suggested it, i would probably go with it, but if i had to pick one, it would be amani. i think najuma is better though.

thabi - honestly? pretty cool name for her, such a cute and short name, i would probably choose something like that. i'll keep it.

hazeem - not gonna lie i did NOT think he would have a muslim/arabic/urdu name when i saw him for the first time. and because i don't know NEARLY ENOUGH about the culture, i'm keeping it. he does look like a hazeem somehow.

james - it's such a common, bland, accessible name... then again, so is he. meh, james is fine. although he gives me benjamin... lol idk why, don't ask

kobi - this guy is such a... dynamic young man. there's a guy named calvin, from season 3 of the circle, and is the perfect summoning of what i think kobi is like. the type of guy that joins his fingers and gestures it to explain something, particularly to someone who hasn't asked anything. yeah, kobi's name is calvin.

will - ok, it would be EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN before will, especially knowing it's short for willem? LIKE, I FEEL SO BETRAYED- anyway, since he's japanese, and i wouldn't give him an engligh name, it's an opportunity to expand the character's culture a bit, so his name would be shigeru (lush), 'cause let's face it, the boy is pure lush... he has a fucking robe, it's perfect.

bruno - rafael vibes, and that's because here in brazil that usually goes to very annoying boys... (pronounced ha-fah-el). he just strikes me as a guy who doesn't know when to be quiet and well... he's a comedian, so you know that's fucking true.

youcef - if you told me he was french i would say pierre, because to be honest his face gives... absolutely nothing, so probably blanche? or blanc...? i don't know, he's just such a weird choice, all i think of is the "go back to party city where you belong" because of his hair. i'm definitely naming his blanche.

valentina - that's the most gabriela i've ever seen!! like... she's so fucking hot, i barely can think when i see her, and valentina is a beautiful name, just doesn't fit her vibe.

juliet - fuck this girl, i hate her design so much. and you know what, i also hate the name adrianna, so that's what i would name her. she has the vibe of someone who cuts you off to talk about herself and adrianna's love doing that shit.

cora - close but not quite, i would name her nova, because reasons. she just gives me nova vibes, maybe it's her style? maybe it's just how fresh she looks, idk, i just love the name nova for her.

tom - i'm not fucking with you, the first name that came to mind when i saw him was jerry, before knowing what he was called lol istg it's just jerry for me, the oldest most generic name for a guy that wears a goddamn suit on a summer trip.

kelly - i don't like the name kelly, it's really common in some regions here, i'm tired! plus, she breathes, walks and talks like a chloe, i can't imagine another name for her.

tiffany - hate this name, oh my god... if i had to moan tiffany at any given time, i would jump into an elevator shaft first. since they go by all pronouns, why not a gender neutral name? he gives me solid riley energy. i like it because of the girl in inside out and how there's male and female emotions in her head, so... riley.

dylan - he could be named rat for all i care. BUT i'm giving marcel, because that's what marcel's do, understimate women and are slightly misogynistic, and by slightly i mean a fuck ton. FUCK THIS GUY, FUCK HIS FACE, FUCK HIS BODY, FUCK HIS PERSONALITY. FUCK - THIS - CHARACTER.

oliver - at this point i don't even know, because he gives oliver, but he also gives mason, and also jason, basically names for guys that are ripped lol i think i would give him luke. don't ask, it's a luke thing!

1. are you named after anyone?

My first name is the name of a specific figure from UK history! someone a lot of uk people have heard of, but it's unusual to actually have this as a name. I get some incredulity and some people who politely ask where i'm from. I have to say i'm not 100% sure what answer they're expecting.

My tumblr url is a B-52s song which seemed somehow relevant back in uhhh 2013 or whenever it was.

2. when was the last time you cried?

I thinkkkk possibly when i was doing my taxes back in january. These days I tend to cry from stress and anger and frustration but it's really bad for me because once I start I find it VERY hard to stop, it makes my emotions spiral, I get more and more upset, so I really have to squash it down. For me crying is not cathartic, it just ruins the day.

3. do you have kids?

No - BUT - I have a lot of much younger cousins - and I babysit them & help with childcare fairly often so I am quite used to kids. Fortunately my cousins think i'm super fun

4. what sports do you play/have you played?

I am extremely noncompetitive! I was terrible at team sports at school and also had terrible hand-eye coordination. I have been at times an OK swimmer and I played a lot of table tennis in my last couple of years of school with the other four or five people who'd been deemed too useless for netball etc. As an adult I do youtube yoga, I periodically do app-based running stuff like Zombies Run or Nike Run Club. Ideally I'd like to go every day on like a 5 mile walk in an interesting location with a reasonable amount of ascent and descent but in a city it's hard to orchestrate that. Also I put my little cousins on my shoulders and get them to direct me where to go so they can learn the difference between left and right

5. do you use sarcasm?

I think I actually don't! Maybe a little bit sometimes. I tend to me more uhhh. pedantic and literal. tend to deconstruct .

6. what’s the first thing you notice about people?

uhhhhh probably skin texture . or haircut . or I look at their clothes. i don't know . sounds creepy. sorry.

7. what’s your eye color??

I think if you average it out it's brownish / greenish . think filippo berio bottle . maybe a bit browner / greyer than that. I tried to take a picture but it only confused me. Also when you look close enough at someone's eyes you might get flecks of like eight different colours.

8. scary movies or happy endings?

I do watch and enjoy scary movies and I have learned that I have a higher tolerance for them than some people BUT if I must pick between the two - I am team happy ending.

9. any talents ?

Little bit doublejointed! Can play a little bit of ukulele. Good memory. Good cook. Can make cocktails .

11. what are your hobbies?

cooking, language learning, walking. Tumblr . opening new browser tabs . I'm getting some wine qualifications which is partly work related partly hobby.

no but my sister & her partner just got a dog and I do feel I am now an auntie

Sonic the Hedgehog CD Part 2: The Workbench ain't the only thing that's wacky

Ok so last time I talked about the best parts of Sonic CD

Now it’s time for the worst parts. And boy can Sonic CD be so very obnoxious

You know it: the level design is a goddamn mess. The levels are bigger sure, but they often have little rhyme or reason on how they’re built, either having you bounce around all over the place like a maniac, having you deal with some obnoxious gimmick (hi Wacky Workbench) or they are much more vertically developed than they are horizontally, meaning that if you keep going right you can literally skip most of the level, which is the case for Quartz Quadrant and some other levels.

Sonic 2′s level design was still a bit simplistic and had some issues with enemy placement, but it at least usually felt like it had focus. Sonic 1 was often basic and counterintuitive to what Sonic wanted to be but it was pretty tightly designed overall

Sonic CD feels like it was designed with MS Paint, just putting obstacles and enemies all over the place. The final result is that the levels will either be lacking or frustrating. Lacking because if you try to play them by simply going for the end goal you’ll usually find yourself just heading to the right while skipping over about 70% of the actual stage (save for exceptions like Collision Chaos and Tidal Tempest, and even then it’s debetable). Frustrating because...

Ok let’s talk about the time travel! So this is a nice example of a neat idea that wasn’t implemented very well

The idea of having to reach top speed and maintain it without stopping for a few seconds is not bad, as it requires the player to master the levels in a way, encouraging them to find the best spots to make time jumps, playing into Sonic’s core idea of gaining and maintaining speed. Unfortunately for this to work it would need for the level design to be good and, as I have altready mentioned, it’s not. Oh sure sometimes it’s as easy as finding two springs one in front of the other and bam. But generally the game pretty much asks you to explore the levels and look for ways to easily gain lots of speed through the level design itself, which requires you to explore these levels and therein lies the problem

These levels were clearily designed to be explored, given their huge sizes, but doing so is simply more tedious than fun due to their structure, which makes finding even the Badnik generators even more of a chore, hell sometimes it goes against all common sense in cases like Wacky Workbench which requires you to get crushed by fake crushers which you would never think to do because it goes against all basic game design rules, and when you factor in that there are only a few Past signs when compared to Future ones, meaning that you have only a few tries per level.

I’m gonna put this here: Sonic games are not meant to have exploration as their main focus. It’s certainly an element of Sonic game design, but to make it the main focus and force the player to comb through enormous stages that are much larger than your typical platformer’s can make the experience supremely grevious and completely shit on the pacing in a game that’s all about having a fast pace. And CD isn’t even the worst with this, not even by a mile, Advance 2 and 3 are right over, as are some of Heroes’ Chaotix missions and a lot of shit from Shadow’s game. Need I remind everyone of the Sun and Moon medals in Unleashed? Honestly the only game that has done a decent job with this approach I think is Colors, but that’s maybe for another time

But of course Sonic CD doesn’t really force you to do all of this right? That’s what the Time Stones are for! Well yeah, sure, and to be fair the Special Stages are not that bad I find, this puts us back to the first issue: we are now playing CD like a normal Sonic game, but this only highlights just how exploration-focused these levels are, as you’ll basically be ignoring most of the design through this approach. Honestly the simple fact that they included Special Stages as an alternative feels to me like they realised at one point that people would have hated the Time Travel and so they put these in at the last moment pretty much

And while the Time Travel is indeed the main source of this game’s great background storytelling...said storytelling is also not showcased quite as solidly as many say I think

Firstly there’s a small issue with how the time travel works here: you go to the Past to smash the robot generators which will, in turn, make every enemy in the level disappear both in the Past and Good Future timeframes...but not in the Present? That makes no sense

But the biggest issue I have is that the game quite simply doesn’t give you the time for the changes that you bring to fully sink in

Let me explain

Games that rely heavily on background storytelling that is generally player-initiated tend to follow what I’d call a “3-step-process”

1) You enter a level/area where things look/work a certain way

2) You perform a set of actions that cause changes

3) The game then makes sure to show you the effects that have been caused by your actions

Metroid Fusion is one of my favorite examples of this as it does this a lot: you get into an area, you run around for a bit getting accostumed to its vibe, then you either flip a switch or beat a boss and now maybe a completely new type of enemy have stormed the rea, or maybe the silhouette of a floating monster is speeding by in the background which serves to foreshadow how in a later part said monster will destroy the area. But Fusion always takes the time to have the player acclimate to the areas and their general feels both pre and post change

Sonic CD doesn’t really do this. What you are changing is effectively each Zone’s Future, yet the game gives you absolutely no reason to visit them. The only thing you shoudl ever do is go to the Past to destroy the generators, going to the Future is basically a waste of time and forces you to contend even more with the irritating Time Travel mechanic. What this mean is that the average player will not see the Bad Futures if not by accident, thus they won’t know what exactly it is that they have changed upon destroying a generator nor will you be rewarded by showing you the Good Futures. Sure the third act of ebery Zone is set in the Future and I’m sure that the developers had all this in mind, but the third acts are all stupidly short, they don’t give you enough time to truly soak in the atmosphere and they’re mostly focused on boss fights anyway. This also means that you’re likely to miss out on about half of the game’s OST. Tracks like Quartz Quadrant Good Future, Speed Highway Good Future and Metallic Madness Bad Future are among my absolute facorites...yet I barely hear them while playing because of this

I honestly think that the Present timeframes should have been scrapped as they serve no real purpose nor do they even make much sense, since Little Planet in the opening appears completely mechanised, implying it’s in its Bad Future state all throughout. I also think that the player should be instantly warped to the Good Future upon destroying a generator in order for them to fully enjoy the results of their hard work

I used to hate Sonic CD. Flat out. Yes the game looks gorgeous, it’s got great music and a nice way of telling a story, but what does any of it even matter when playing it is a chore due to some of the most off the wall level design in the series and some really irritating gimmicks? Yet this is the game that for years I’ve seen people praise to high Heavens as the best in the series, despite other games in the series getting shat on for similar or even less severe issues? I’m not trying to insult anyone who likes the game that much, more power to you, really, I’m just saying that, as far as I’m concerned, a game whose best qualities are all things that can be enjoyed without me actually playing it (I can listen to CD’s music seperately, look up screenshots of its spritework and watch the cutscenes online) then it has failed as an interactive piece of media for me, because it means that I don’t want to play it ergo I don’t want to interact with it

Now do I hate Sonic CD NOW? No not really. In fact I’d probably play this over Sonic 1 most of the time due to it being overall faster and closer to a “regular” Sonic game by comparison, and because I have gained a certain degree of weird satisfaction after years of learning the level design in order to discover the best spots to time travel (this does NOT invalidate all that I’ve said, it’s a process that took literal years for me and was not very fun, it’s just the end result that gives me satisfaction but I can’t say it was worth it overall). But it’s not because it grew up on me over time or because I gained a new appreciation for it, as was the case for me with the likes of SA2 and Colors, no it’s simply because I got used to the bad parts over years of replaying it for personal marathons. Because if you were to ask me my “objective opinion” (if there even is such a thing, I know) about Sonic CD? This is one of the weakest entries in the whole series, not bad like Sonic 06 and similar others, but below most other decent games. Pretty much a 6/10 game. I wouldn’t be able to give it much more in good conscience

Why I did not release TAOL Chapter 42

Hi all, you may be wondering where is Chapter 42 for The Anatomy of Love. Well, I got a funny story to tell y'all with both good news and bad news...

So, as some of you may know, I am a registered nurse with a Bachelors of Science. However, when I first started college, I bounced between Nursing and English because both were my passion. For practicality, I completed my nursing to make that bank 💸💸💸 But last year, on a whim and thanks to the encouragement of friends and family who recognized my passion in the art of literature, I applied to college again to finish my English degree as well.

Well, I honestly didn't think much would come out of it because these were ivy league level schools that I applied to more as just a joke to myself because I didn't think I had what it took to get in (I consider myself a pretty average student).

Turns out your girl got accepted to the number 1 English program in her country!! 🥳🎉🎉 Yep, I'm returning to college to finish my English degree this coming Fall! I'm super excited but super scared because the university is renowned for its world class academia, rigor, and competitiveness but also I'm so ecstatic to be able to pursue my passion like this!

Ok here's where the story really starts.

So I traveled to the university's city to scout the campus, tour around the classrooms and sit in lectures to get a feel of the whole vibe. I also was looking for apartments to rent for the school semester and, well, unfortunately the city is a high crime area so...

As I was in the middle of touring, I ended up facing a robber at gunpoint (that's 'Murica for you). Miraculously, my dumb ass managed to escape unharmed because the idiot had the safety on and I had pepper gel (sadly he was not caught).

BUT! A few days after that, while still touring the city, I ended up facing another robber but this time at knifepoint. This time I suffered some minor injuries and a minced purse 🥹 but thankfully nothing was stolen (except for my phone but I was able to recover it just fine).

So I went to the hospital for some stitches and went on my dandy way.

Then 2 weeks ago - yes, the same weekend I updated Chapter 41 - my friend asked me to go rock climbing with her on Sunday afternoon (literally right after I posted the chapter).

I weight lift regularly at the gym and run a few miles a week, so my dumb ass thought that despite my minor injuries, I would be just fine rock climbing.

Well, my dumb ass severely underestimated just how much rock climbing requires you to engage all the muscles of your body, from your ankles and toes all the way to your wrists and finger tips.

As you probably guessed by now, yes, my dumb ass tore my stitches and at the moment I am still in a world of pain.

Because it's painful to hunch over the computer for long periods of time, I've had to give myself another break. So I want to take the next weeks or so taking my proper rest and completing my rehab so that I'll be in tip top shape to start university (or finish Uni I guess?) when Fall semester starts.

So sorry for the inconvenience! I will do my best to get Chapter 42 out as soon as I feel better!

Orgasms cout, right? ;D Right now what comes to mind though is the only fix-it fic I've really written - (I only need) the working of my hands Where I give Hellcheer the happy, sexy ending they deserve (but make it Sapphic with a side of coming back wrong)

Not yet! Fingers crossed it remains that way! I usually try and stay miles away from any fandom drama tbh

I am determined to! Like sure I would call some of what I've already written smut but I feel like I'm not quite fully there yet. I haven't fully realised the lengths of perversion/intimacy hyperfixation that sits in my mind! Its an ongoing process hehe

Regarding what flavour of smut I write, its always queer, soft, and a little gothic in the undertones... Would love to do some more genderqueer stuff in the future as well

Not yet! I'm not against them, and I loove a good AU, but nothing has stuck so far. Maybe one day I'll write that Stranger Things Persona 4 AU. (look it would work so well!! Eddie as Kanji makes me feral ngl)

Harry potter haha, wrote some truly terrible angsty self-insert when i was 14 (luckily that is gone forever!!)

Honestly, I really love When I am done, its such a snap-shot kind of fic, and its got such a mood that I love. Keeping a one-shot simple and to the point is really difficult, and I think this one is my best attempt at it.

THIS WAS SO CUUUUTTTTTEEEEE!!! i liked the way the author portrayed the genuine hell that being stuck at 17 would be. please get me out of here i want a fully developed frontal lobe. AW and all of the characters were super likable. truly so adorable i was squealing the whole time.

im knocking a point off for the romance being a littttllllleeeee rushed and the character descriptions feeling off (it felt odd that both pov characters categorized every single person into a specific race? i think its good practice to make a characters race clear, but idk if that applies to a random teacher with no dialogue). to be so real though i loved this book enough that it didn't bother me too much.

How do you imagine skyfire's reaction if he found out about who destroyed the flight frame's cities? Like the city of Vos?

Regardless of what his relationship with starscream was like, he killed himself socially and will not be accepted back

Honestly? I don't think the autobots ever tell him. It's not exactly something they're proud of (well, most of them, anyway). Pushing an entire species to the brink of extinction over night is a pretty tasteless thing to brag about, after all, even for the brashest of bots. Skyfire is operating under the assumption that Vos and the other 2 flying cities still stand. They're not lying to yim, exactly, just... choosing to let him believe what he wants and not bothering to correct him

He doesn't find out until some sort of altercation with Starscream, and he tries to talk his old partner down. Telling him that it's ok, Skyfire forgives him! He doesn't have to follow Megatron anymore, he's sure the bots will accept him!

And Starscream just. Explodes. Nearly rips him apart in a fit of vicious rage, screeching at such decibels Skyfire's glass parts crack. How dare he?! How DARE HE?! How dare Skyfire suggest Starscream betray his own kind and walk into the arms of the ones responsible for Vos's genocide?! How dare he suggest the seekers roll over and try to petition for refuge from the very people they need refuge from?! How dare he suggest that they all spit on Vos's memory like that, desecrate the memories of the millions of seekers that died that day?! Those monsters took a neutral city and bombed it to smithereens, unprovoked, wiping out more than 95% of their population in less than a day. They tore Vos and Helex and Kalis all down from their rightful places in the sky, one after another! These are the people Skyfire--miserable, slimy traitor that he is--chose to side with. He happily sleeps with the enemy and thinks he can manipulate Starscream into joining them?

Frag. That.

That is how Skyfire finds out. In a burning rage from Starscream, who's definitely crying as he rants and recounts everything the autobots did, cursing his name for lending his strength to the very ones who destroyed their home.

And Skyfire... he's in shock. Even after Starscream leaves him, face down in the dirt and bleeding heavily. He can't feel any of the pain from his injuries, his audials are ringing, and his optics stare a thousand miles into the distance.

The autobots... destroyed Vos?

If you've been following me long enough you start to see trends. I've always liked Luigi so he's probably the most popular character on this blog. Ganondorf is quickly climbing the ranks somehow.

I've tried it in some summer months but all it does is leave the air cold and wet when I wake up, I'm not super into it. But the nighttime breeze is lovely

Roommate and I joined the 68,000* yesterday evening.

But I lived, bitch.

"What happened?" Roommate, who was delivering 120 water bottles downtown with me while he'd suffered a day-long treatment-resistant headache and weeks of inadequate sleep, blew a red light 2 blocks from the gathering of unhoused people to whom the water bottles were to be distributed, and someone (from Dallas, my god I'm so sorry this is a Major Houston Memory for her now) who was obeying traffic laws plowed into the front passenger side of the car we were in because she had too much momentum to stop.

AND GUESS WHO WAS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR, YEAAAHHHH BABYYYYY

Parties I consider at fault: -Houston, being a massively shitty 'built for cars and not people' nexus of hell that forces people in any and all conditions to pilot killing machines to get from point A to point B. -Houston again, and honestly all of US society, with its violently negligent attitude toward anyone even temporarily down on their luck and its refusal to house unhoused people, even though mountains of studies attest that not only is housing the unhoused the right fucking thing to do, it's cheaper. We would not have been schlepping downtown both nigh-lethally exhausted out of our minds to deliver water if the people in this city were properly cared for. -Yeah honestly my roommate, he's kind of always made me nervous behind the wheel bc his ADHD makes me look downright neurotypical by comparison, and I've chewed him out several times for dumbass shit he's done on the road while I was present. He's been in absolute hell since last night over screwing up so bad he lost his car and almost killed multiple people including a friend, though, and I'm not going to add to his anguish by being angry at him. I am honestly kind of angry, but I'm working through it. -not the person we hit, she did everything right but unfortunately lost her car to a combination of What Our Society Chooses To Be and my roommate driving while unfit to do so. "Are you ok?" By the grace of God, airbags, seatbelts, and the intercession of several saints, despite being the one who was hit, I got out with only some bruises and an uglier-than-it-feels spot of road rash taking up the lower half of my upper arm. I was well enough to decline an ambulance and walk a mile to the nearest ER (the one good thing about the stupid themepark for oil and gas pencil pushers that downtown Houston is: there is an ER on St. Joseph's Pkwy that is pretty easy to reach from most of downtown if you can walk.) I hurt, but by all accounts I should probably be in much more pain than I am... though I'm sure when/if the adrenaline finally wears off, I will cry.

I am probably going to need some help with being able to ride passenger-side again, and when roomie gets his replacement car (because this city is fucking garbage and his continued employment depends on him having a car to get to/from work) I am probably not going to be able to ride with him, because what trust I had there is honestly just fucking demolished. But God willing I will be okay nonetheless.I have other friends who can drive, and I know they'll be patient with me insisting on taking the middle back seat until my brain can recover.

TL;DR: Airbags are your friend, and wear your seatbelt always. Please. Do it for me, at least. Everyone I talked to last night (when not helpfully informing me that I was in shock) asked if I was wearing my seatbelt. I was, as I was happy to inform them. That and the airbag are why I'm able to dick around online from the comfort of my home this morning instead of being strung up in ICU or lying in a bag at the morgue.

*there are approximately 68,000 wrecks on Houston roads every year. We outrank several states in terms of volume of auto collisions. Even the very nice fireman who wrapped up my road rash told me when he moved here from Chicago, he totaled his car within two weeks bc he hadn't quite adapted to the concept of feeder roads yet and got bowled by someone in a hurry/not paying attention. This place fucking sucks, man, never come here. Stop moving here.
