learned the word "porfa" on spanishdict today and i read its just a shorter version of "por favor"

in your experience, do you see it used often?

and if so like, are there any more notable words that native spanish speakers say differently than ppl who are learning?

like sometimes i listen to ppl learning english, and they're good and also really formal and stuff but like, a native english speaker has less formal way of saying it?

Yes, porfa is used somewhat frequently as very informal "please" and it's especially used online as a kind of endearing "pretty please". It's not appropriate for anything formal, but in everyday Spanish porfa can be used if you're trying to be a bit cutesy or have fun

Also por is often shortened to po and para is often shortened to pa. So you might see pa ti "for you" instead of para ti. One joke is like pa él y paella "for him and for her" but with pa ella "for her" looking like the word paella

Other expressions I've seen that you can adopt:

holi / holis / holitas = hola = hi [slang] aló = hello [from "hello", kind of slang but sometimes German-ish] chao / chau = ciao / bye [informal and fairly common] bye / bai bai = bye [adapted from English, informal] Nos vemos. = See you later. [lit. "we will see each other"; standard Spanish] ¿Ontas? = ¿Dónde estás? [though ontas is sometimes used as like... idk a fuckboy kinda thing like "where you at" or "you up?" like someone messaging you for sex/attention might say that; definitely slang but makes sense when you hear it] ¿Qué tal? = How are you? / What's up? [standard Spanish] ¿Qué hay (de nuevo)? = What's new? [standard Spanish] ¿Qué onda? = What's up? [informal, I think understood in most places but to me I associate it with Mexico because of that song] ¿Cómo va? / ¿Cómo te va? = How's it going? / How's it going for you? [standard Spanish; but you can hear it in the song Oye cómo va] ¡Buenas! = Hey! / Hi! [this is because of the expressions buen día "good day", buenos días "good day/hello", buenas tardes "good evening", and buenas noches "good night" all using bueno/a... Essentially ¡buenas! is a just all around "hello"... one of the youtubers I follow frequently starts his videos with muy buenas a todos which is like "hey everyone"; I feel like it's informal and a bit slang, but also widely recognized and understood]

I personally if I'm being cutesy and saying "hello", I will say things like holanda instead of hola [please also note: holanda means "Holland" OR it can be "fine linen" or "doilies"]

I've also been known to say ola "wave", olla "pot", holá which is just hola with added whimsy etc etc

In texting you see even more slang, like xk meaning porque "because" or sometimes x k? / xk? as por qué "why?"

This is because por is also the word used for multiplication (x), so tres por tres is "three times three" or "three multiplied by three", shortened in math as 3 x 3

And if you want to be cutesy - like almost obnoxious - and say adiosito that's something like "toodle-oo"; it's just a little adiós

Some additional regional things I know: ¿Qué lo que? "What's up?" which is Dominican and I think is sometimes used in the Caribbean.

And also ¿Quiubo? for "What's up?" or "How's it going?" which is more Central American.

I would also add ajá for "uh-huh", na for "nah" or ni modo or qué va "no way", sip for "yup", lo que sea "whatever", ay which is just a general "oof" or "yikes" or "ow" or "oh wow" like a general negative surprise word, and eh being "hey" as both a greeting and interjection

And every so often my friend from Puerto Rico will use jamón instead of jamás to be "never ever", like "that's a definite no" or "never gonna happen" - it's sort of a bigger jamás but if you didn't know the context you'd think it was "ham"

You will also sometimes see pos used instead of pues so it could be "well/then"

In Chile po is used a lot, kind of like an affirmative but used so often it's kind of like staying "of course"

And I don't know if this is used widely but clarostá is sometimes used as "of course", but it can be understood to be a more rural or country bumpkin kind of way of speaking...

The more fluent you are, the more your words will blend together so you'll end up with clarostá or claro está, or tol día for todo el día "all day", pa na for para nada, and that's actually how you get ontas from dónde estás

There are definitely bound to be others so if anyone else has any fun common slang greetings/goodbyes please let me know!

I Just Watched: Society of the Snow (2023)

I don’t think I’ll ever be boarding on an aeroplane again after watching this!!! 😰

This was the most stressful and the most terrifying film I have ever seen. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through! I spent a good chunk of the runtime hugging my legs close to my body in absolute terror! I’m not joking! 😧

The film is based on the harrowing true story of when Flight 571, while flying from Uruguay to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes Mountains, and the people who survived the accident work together to survive while trying to navigate their way home.

I wasn’t familiar with the story going into it. My parents have heard of it though, so I had to rely on them most of the time to know if what we were watching was accurate or not. I was also a little apprehensive upon reading the film’s synopsis because it sounded like your typical Hollywood blockbuster where they’re likely to glorify certain events and miscast actors who portrayed the real people involved in these events.

While watching the film however, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it didn’t feel blockbuster-y to me at all! Everything felt incredibly intimate, as if you’re watching a documentary with the way it was shot and acted. It felt grounded in reality thanks to the stunning cinematography and wonderful acting from the cast. The casting was excellent and the acting phenomenal. So much so, that I grew to care about the characters they portrayed and the perils they faced. Everyone was fully committed to their roles and shone like stars in the sky. I was admittedly close to tears by the end. It was so beautiful, I loved it! 🥲

I found out after doing some research that a lot of what happened in the film was accurate to the source material, including the scenes that involved c******lism. Having that bit of information in the film made my jaw drop. That was a very bold move on the film’s part! It was very disturbing to witness, but I enjoyed it regardless. Maybe a couple of minor details here and there were a little inaccurate, but that didn’t bother me in the slightest.

I’ve just learned that J. A. Bayona directed this. It’s a name you might not be familiar with, but he was the one who directed one of my favourite disaster films The Impossible (2012), which starred Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, and a very young Tom Holland. Funnily enough, that film was also based on a horrifying true event. Instead of a plane in the Andes, it’s a tsunami in Thailand in 2004; an event my parents also remember reading and hearing about on the news. I can imagine Bayona researching the hell out of these events to make sure the stories he tells are as close to accurate as possible, and he delivers to an insane degree every single time.

On another note, Michael Giacchino composed the score for this film. It’s not quite as memorable as his other work for, say, Pixar for example, but it suited the tone of the film exceptionally well. So if you’re a fan of his music, I recommend giving it a listen.

Overall, an utterly compelling and terrifying film to sit through. It filled its 2 1/2 hr long runtime very well. I cannot recommend this film enough! Give it a watch if you have the time.

(Now I need to watch it again in the original Spanish language. We watched the English dub and it was actually pretty good. English dubbed versions of foreign languages are notoriously awful (at least, by Netflix’s standard), so I was surprised by that. I’ll need to see how it compares with the original Spanish version though.)

Sasha. I feel she would be from a country like Chile, maybe Brasil. Connie screams Puerto Rican or maybe Venezuelan. I've never put Porco and Marcel in this category but I can see them being from Argentina, maybe Chile or Central-South Brasil.

Non-latino Americans:

Canonically, Erwin is the personification of the US, but I also see him being Canadian. Levi would be Canadian but I think his parents are immigrants from the Poland-Germany area). Reiner would be from the US (I'm sorry, I love him but he screams man from Florida).

Europeans:

Armin and Eren could be German, although I see Armin being from Holland or Austria. Jean I'm stuck between Italian or French (more French, I believe) Colt, on the other hand could be very much a traditional Italian. Ymir could be classified as a Scandinavian because of her name, but I also see her being from Albania or Romania. Berthold and Historia give me Irish vibes.

In the comments section “easyasgoingtothedentist” asked the following question so I thought I would try and answer. My response is probably too long but I wanted to give it a go so here it is.

Question = “It’s hard to believe you have been on this journey for half a year now. With one month remaining, would you reflect on your favorite places and where you would return to? Any comments on the world atmosphere post-Covid which you have experienced? How about any interesting people you have met on the ship? Which ports did they embark? What nationality were they? It has been really fun to read of your escapades. Thank you. Oh- and could you please post a map of the rest of your ports-o-call?”

Thank you for your note. I appreciate that someone is actually looking at this. It is hard to answer your first question because there have been so many but let me give you a few statistics before I try.

On this trip we have visited 44 countries with 117 stops in different cities. I keep track of how far we go each day and the two screenshots below show my mileage markers. To date we have traveled 51,430 miles and have 7,195 miles to go for a total voyage of 58,625 miles. As far as the rest of the voyage we will be visiting Sitka, Ketchikan, Prince Rupert, Victoria, Astoria, San Francisco, Cabo San Lucas, Zihuatanejo, Puerto Quetzal, Puentarenas, Cartagena and Great Stirrup Bay in that order. We weren’t allowed to land in Peru or Myanmar because of political unrest and missed Kodiak Island and Hubbard’s Glacier because of weather. Because of CoVid we were the first cruise ship to return to many of the ports and there were extremely happy to see us. Bands, dancing and big welcome signs were common. Many of these places depend on the tourist business and there were many closed businesses and restaurants that didn’t survive.

The average age of people on the ship is 72, the oldest is 92 and the youngest is 23. Five people have died during the voyage, there was one helicopter evacuation because of a heart attack, there have been 8 people that have broken arms, legs and wrists because of falls and 2 couples have been kicked off the ship because of misbehavior. The ship doesn’t advertise these events so there may have been more but these are the ones I know about.

Three hundred and fifty of the Around The World passengers got on and will get off in San Francisco. Fifty seven got on and off in Miami and NewYork. Half the passengers are from the US, 25 % from Canada and the rest from other countries including Switzerland, Germany, UK, New Zealand, Australia, Holland, Israel, Mexico, Columbia, Turkey and two Ukrainians. The passengers are fairly affluent with representation from all races, colors and nationalities. Most are retired but some still working a little. The professions include medical Doctors, lawyers, engineers, book authors, a retired bus driver, a police detective, a tobacco factory owner, university professors, bed and breakfast owners, medical laboratory technicians, the owner of a Canadian lumber company, the chief architect for Home Depot, high school superintendents, a physiologist and many more that I don’t know.

The crew is even more diverse. The Captain is from Croatia and most of the officers from Eastern Europe. There are only about 8 of the crew that actually work for the cruise line the rest work through a contract company and are mostly Indian, Philippino and Indonesian. The chef and ship manager are French.

As far as places I would like to go back to there are many so let me just pick one or two from each continent. The highlight of the trip was Antartica. Amazing scenery, amazing animals and absolute desolation. In South America it would be Punta de Este, Uruguay followed by Puerto Monty, Chile and Recife, Brazil. In Africa it would be the Seychelles followed by Cape Town, South Africa and Walvus Bay, Namibia. In the Middle East it would be Muscat,Oman. Dubai, of course, is great but it is just a big international city. In South Asia it would be Columbo, Sri Lanka. In the Far East all of Japan was great but if I had to pick it would be Hakodate and Kobe, Japan followed by Ha Long Bay, Vietnam and Singapore.

Politically my biggest surprise was how strong the Chinese influence is in many of the countries especially West Africa. The situation in these countries is very sad. It is to much to discuss here but basically the vast majority of people live in extreme poverty with the few people in power selling off the resources of the country to China to enrich themselves. The Chinese then move their people in to gain land and resources at the expense of the local population.

Another surprise and disappointment was what I saw in San Diego and San Francisco. The downtown streets are lined with tents and cardboard boxes housing the homeless. There were many many more than I saw in even the poorest countries we visited. I am not going to get into the reasons I think this is happening but there is definitely something wrong in these cities and it needs to be fixed.

Nasi goreng is essentially Indonesia's take on fried rice. In addition to kecap manis, the country's ubiquitous sweet soy sauce, terasi (Indonesian shrimp paste) is what sets nasi goreng apart from other fried-rice variations you'll see in other countries.

Terasi is an umami bomb that pervades both your kitchen and your senses. If you can't find it easily, feel free to substitute another Southeast Asian shrimp paste, or omit it—you’ll be making what my mom calls nasi goreng cina, or Chinese fried rice, which is the version she made for us when I was growing up.

Ingredients

For the Spice Paste:

2 small shallots (2 ounces; 55g), roughly chopped

3 medium cloves garlic

1 large fresh green chile, such as Fresno or Holland, stemmed and seeded, or 1 teaspoon sambal oelek, such as Huy Fong (see note)

1/2 teaspoon terasi (Indonesian shrimp paste), optional (see note)

For the Nasi Goreng:

4 cups cold cooked jasmine rice (21 ounces; 600g) or other medium- to long-grain rice (see note)

2 tablespoons (30ml) neutral oil, such as canola or sunflower oil

2 tablespoons (30ml) kecap manis (see note), plus more for drizzling

2 teaspoons (10ml) soy sauce

Kosher salt

Ground white pepper

To Serve:

2 large fried eggs, cooked sunny-side up or over easy

Sliced cucumbers (optional)

Sliced tomatoes (optional)

Fried shallots (optional)

Directions

1. For the Spice Paste: Add half the shallots to a mortar and grind with pestle until a coarse purée forms. Add remaining shallots, followed by garlic, chile, and terasi (if using), grinding with pestle until each ingredient is mostly incorporated before adding the next. The final paste should resemble thick oatmeal in texture. Alternatively, combine all spice paste ingredients in a small food processor and process until they form a paste.

2. For the Nasi Goreng: If using day-old rice, transfer rice to a bowl and break rice up with your hands into individual grains.

3. Heat oil in a large wok or skillet over high heat until shimmering. Add spice paste and cook, stirring constantly and scraping bottom of wok or pan to prevent paste from burning, until a pungent smell permeates your kitchen and paste turns a few shades darker, 2 to 3 minutes. Reduce heat to medium at any time if paste appears to be browning too quickly.

4. Add rice to wok and stir to coat with spice paste. Add kecap manis and soy sauce. Stir and cook until rice is evenly colored and hot throughout. Season with salt and white pepper.

5. Divide rice between two plates and top each plate of rice with a fried egg. Garnish with cucumber and tomato slices and shower with fried shallots, if you like. Serve immediately with kecap manis alongside for drizzling.

Notes

Terasi is an Indonesian shrimp paste that can be found in well-stocked Asian markets or online. We recommend purchasing handy single-serving packets. If you can't find terasi, you may substitute belacan (Malaysian or Singaporean shrimp paste) or Thai shrimp paste, or simply omit it altogether.

Sambal oelek is an Indonesian chile paste, traditionally made with nothing more than hot red chiles and salt. You can find it at Asian markets or in the "international" aisle of some supermarkets.

Kecap manis is Indonesian sweet soy sauce, typically made by combining soy sauce with palm sugar. We recommend Cap Bango kecap manis, but you may also find ABC and Conimex brands available online or in Asian markets. For more information, read our kecap manis explainer.

For best results, use rice that has been refrigerated for at least 12 hours and up to 3 days. If using freshly cooked rice, spread rice on a tray and allow to cool for 5 minutes before using.
