In my post-Cherry Magic haze, I checked out the spring dorama, Hiru, to scope out Akaso Eiji’s dramatic acting -- and admittedly, to enjoy Sakaguchi Kentaro’s dramatic acting as well, meep meep.

It was good! I wouldn’t say it was REALLY OMG GOOD, but I think for the relatively short length of the series, it was worth watching. (Perfect show to work out to, if that makes sense -- if you can work out and read subtitles at the same time.)

The concept of the show was that it was split up into two mini “seasons” (kind of like Shinhannin Flag from earlier this year with Nishijima Hidetoshi) of six short episodes each, with the first season focusing on Akaso’s character as a drifting, sad sack character who has his identity stolen by a “leech” (aka a “hiru”), who takes over his apartment when he’s not living in it, and steals his identity.

Akaso’s character uncovers a world in which people across Tokyo live in unoccupied apartments for short periods of time, like work days or vacations, to shower and sleep, jumping from room to room. Turns out there’s a whole world of leeches, many of whom get tied into underground criminal activity.

Sakaguchi’s character is the focus of season two, as he plays a “leech hunter” who looks among the leech community for revenge for the killing of his mother figure.

Not to say that Akaso’s dramatic acting isn’t GREAT, but I’ve only now seen him in two works (CM and Hiru), and he does nail the sad sack characteristics well. But this show was dominated by a brooding Sakaguchi in season two -- he was fabulous as a totally dejected and revenge-driven man who happens to look out for people who looked out for him in the past.

The two main actresses of each season -- Yoshikawa Ai in season one and Iitoyo Marie in season two -- were phenomenal, playing complicated characters who had unwillingly falling into the lifestyles of the leeches. They did not overblow the drama as many actors might, with the kind of script they had (the police characters were a leetle too overdramatic, but they were more prominent in season two anyway, and Sakaguchi just ate that part of the series). I’d like to see Akaso and Yoshikawa in another series together -- they had excellent chemistry.

I wanted to try to watch Kyousou no Bannin this summer for more Sakaguchi, but watching a drama about a fair trade commission, ya know, just didn’t seem spicy enough for the time investment. But that being said, I know and love Sakaguchi from his turn as Suganami-sensei in Okaeri Mone, in which he was PERRRRFECT. (That show was SO SO GOOD Y’ALL, so very worth watching, despite the asadora time investment). So to see him just brooding, miserable, dramatic, and fabulous in Hiru was well worth the watch alone. If you need a quick dorama with drama, this is a good one!

Over the past month I've had a lot of fun just sketching up some cute romance between some of the canon couples in DIVE. I keep forgetting the height difference between Robina and Isontaro (They're on opposite ends of average height spectrum for the Demyra). Hiru is one of the tallest in the story, although Anna is average height wise she still looks small in comparison.

I really love how these turned out, I'll definitely be making more of some of the other characters.
