#im posting this very late because i was sort of weary of how it came out and ended up messing w it until it was like 4am oops. #and i have plans tmrw so... oh well! i did my best and ill put it out while i can! #and i tried to make the scene match barnard's colors lol #finn's ocs #finn's art #i know i said id do more sillay stuff with the simpler screentone only style but i had a couple more of these in me #and this is the first piece im making thats like an actual part of the story too rather than just setting stuff for fun #i wanna write something to go with it too but for now ill just sort of briefly explain the context in the tags here: #barnard has a pretty bad case of OCD and his compulsions have made it difficult to make friends in the past #he was never outright bullied or anything but people just didnt really have the patience to deal with it #he has compulsions that include stuff like walking through doors until it feels right and needing things to be perfectly aligned #which in group settings has lead to people having to wait for him to finish his rituals and join them #they might find it tolerable at first but eventually they grow impatient and hes just... not invited to stuff anymore #but juno is a newer member of the guild who ends up frequenting the same library. hes also kinda a little weird #and they dont become fast friends or anything but just sort of naturally spend time in the same place #though they never plan meetups they eventually fall into a routine. around the same time theyd just both be at the library #and read next to each other. and maybe talk a bit. and eventually they end up walking back to the guildhall together #since theyre going to the same place after all. and juno always waits for barnard outside the door #eventually barnard asks if this bothers him. juno kinda just tells him 'of course it does' without any malice or anything. just a statement #barnard is surprised and apologizes and juno says not to. but the next day juno doesnt show up at the usual time. #barnard assumes hes committed somekinda more by bringing it up. he ends up staying there late reading to get his mind off it & not ruminate #but when he leaves juno is in fact still waiting for him down the hall (see pic) having collected a bunch of books literally abt ocd #he fell asleep bc barnard stayed later than expected. and hes an eepy guy generally. and also one very bad at expressing himself #but now barnard gets that juno's 'of course it [bothers me]' had the implication of 'but its worth it' which no friend has previously done. #and from the interaction juno was also able to understand that this isn't something barnard just does for the hell of it so. he studies. #and checks a bunch of stuff out because he thinks it could help his friend too (theres ocd workbooks and such- i remember working w them) #and thats the point where they became more ''friends'' than ''pleasant library acquaintances'' #from there on they also do get into juno's problems. whole other bag of worms. but this specific scene is more about bernard from his pov #sorry about when i said briefly explain. i lied </3 #but compared to the whole sequence im picturing its brief so shhh

Warning- this is a very petty post, but I think I'm entitled to at least one petty, pissed-off reaction every time I finish a classic novel that hit harder than I expected so take this as my quota for the year.

Also spoiler warning for a book that came out over a century ago but still, I didn't know the plot going in so don't want to ruin it for anyone else, if you haven't read it shut your eyes. (Also Local Tumblr User Going Wild Over Book Published a Hundred Years Ago That Everybody Else Already Read should probably be categorised as akey part of indigenous tumblr culture at this point).

Anyway I just finished the War of the Worlds and in between studying I've thinking about Themes and Motifs as you do, and idly looking for further analysis. I then accidentally ran into an article called 'A Quiet Place II Succeeds Where the War of the Worlds Failed' and:

Now I haven't seen any of the Quiet Place films, this is not a rant against them and of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But re: the ending of The War of the Worlds, I have to ask, did this guy somehow miss, uh, the entire point of the book or am I just utterly insane?

#You're right it's not very satisfying for humanity that the invaders are foiled by a bacteria and not human action! Maybe that's the point! #Maybe it's supposed to be FRIGHTENING and make you ask questions about what humans will do under extreme stress #Not be a morally uplifting tale about Humanity Heroically Defeating the Martians in a Glorious Hollywood Ending #Maybe it's MEANT to be unsatisfying because this is not a straightforward fairytale #I mean I've only read it once and don't know much about Wells' work so I might have misunderstood the point of the book too #But at places it is a very pessimistic view of the human condition and that's partly WHY IT'S SO POWERFUL #That doesn't mean there aren't moments of individual acts of heroism (the Thunderchild for example) #But the question is not just 'how will humanity beat the Martians and prove that we're still the masters of the universe' #Rather 'a) why is humanity so confident that it's ultimately in control of its own destiny #And b) here's lots of scenes of societal collapse and of people pushed to the brink and what would YOU do in those circumstances? #Would YOU feel remorse about silencing the curate even if it did lead to his death? #What if it rather than a foolish adult it had been a small child? #And even if they were weak did they DESERVE it? Yes it might have been necessary but should it be policy going forward? #Would you also be attracted briefly by the certainties that the artilleryman's (rather fascist) plan seems to offer so humanity survives? #But what sort of humanity would that be if it DID survive and is it worth it? The narrator feels he needs to justify the curate's death #The artilleryman would have probably never have thought it was anything OTHER than justifiable or indeed laudable #Under strain and stress would you start to turn against even your loved ones and become brutal? #Is that the only hope for human survival beyond complete surrender? And was the destruction of London maybe even 'cleansing' #In the eugenics sense or in the sense of a natural horror of dirt and germs? #And the vast exodus of six million people fleeing headlong in panic - we might not have seen that exact phenomenon #But didn't the twentieth century subsequently go on to show us unprecedented scale of slaughter and refugee movements and communal strife? #At the end of the day what really separates humanity from other animals? And what separates us from the Martians? #It's not an uncontroversial book- it was written over a hundred years ago for goodness sake and there are questions worth asking #about the way imperialism and arguments about eugenics and population control and all sorts of other dodgy areas operated on Wells' mind #But dear God I really don't think the problem with the book is that 'Humanity didn't save the day!' #Unsatisfying ending? Yes. A FAILURE? No not in my opinion- looks like it was exactly what Wells set out to do #Humanity didn't win the war of the worlds they had a narrow escape and though it might not be martians next time #Why wouldn't disaster return in the future? Sure we've studied their flying machines and even preserved a martian in a jar #But for all our science what have we ACTUALLY learned that will enable us to avert future human catastrophes? Ethically or socially? #Alright rant over- as usual my opinion is not universal nor necessarily well-informed this take just really got my goat

My final thoughts about the reporter:

I think it’s crazy to just pass judgment on that situation without looking at the context. I can understand why, but going so far as to read into what someone’s saying and suggesting that they believe their struggle (which, mind you, is also a genocide) is more important due to some inherent “Arab antiblackness”… Without any attempt to directly reach out for clarification. As they’re pointing out aid that should have gone to your country…

I’m going to trust the Sudanese woman who repeated the reporter’s words verbatim and explained exactly what he said. To me that’s a much better contextualization than “sksksk me and the girlies think what he said was super racist, he thinks his struggle is more important than ours, if you know you know!”

Especially given that he stands to materially gain… what, exactly, from the alleged antiblack sentiment? What does he stand to gain from demeaning the tragedy of another group of people in favor of his own? The answer is not hardly clear enough for me to levy that judgment against him, I’m sorry. Especially without at least trying to have a conversation about it first.

A lot of us are going to have to work harder to contextualize both what we see and what people are saying about what we see. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s necessary. We need to be able to think for ourselves. And we don’t have to agree on everything, nor will we. But being able to have these conversations (both among ourselves as to whether something really is antiblackness and with the people who we feel have hurt us) is necessary. If we can’t ask one another, “Do we really think this is the case? Is this indeed what’s going on?” then we’re just setting ourselves up for critical judgment errors in the future.

#at this point though: any request to bring up “discourse” is a red flag #to what material end are we having this discourse? #and if we’re talking about something someone has done that we don’t like… #why not just address them personally and see if those feelings can’t get sorted out? #we owe ourselves and our allies a chance at conversation #hopefully that makes sense #if you’ve seen the video and you feel like he says something egregious after considering his words… so be it! #at least you gave it thought #I think I’m just wary of “take my word for it” when you’re actively putting words in someone’s mouth #especially given the way AI images and videos are poised to skew any “reality” we see on here #especially since not everyone is who they say they are online #i feel like I needed to say something about this before moving on #because it’s important and it underlines how we should be thinking moving forward

#i'm thinking about this one time that jabel said that adam's reached the point where he'd just sort of sit back and let shit happen to him #and i've always sort of thought along the same lines in a way? that the way michael brought up lucifer being freed while adam sat in hell #specifically was like. a breaking point for him. and that's when that sort of bleak state of mind started to set in #and it isn't like adam is incapable of being hopeful anymore! he was hopeful for the future in the diner! #but there is just a bone-deep weariness about him at the end of the episode. which could be explained by the fact that they just got #the god bomb dropped on them. but also it was in response to him being called a good man and being told that he didn't deserve what #happened to him. so yes it's about the cage and yes it's about the silent sense of hopelessness he sits in #i think if something like that ever came up in conversation. maybe in the cage or something #if they're talking about control and how sam did it. or whatever. and adam's just like what does it matter. if you wanted control #i couldn't stop you anyway. and you just know michael would disagree with him about it and say that adam more than has the mental #capacity to suppress him if needed. but adam's not really listening because he's just so resigned to the idea of it happening #like there really is such a power imbalance between them and when building a relationship like theirs that's not something they can really. #ignore. and i think a lot of it at first would be adam resigning himself to the fact that if michael wanted the body he'd have the body #and he couldn't do anything about it. and it doesn't even matter anyway. and then michael's on the other side like #no it DOES matter. i DO respect you. i DON'T want to put you in that sort of position ever. i need you to believe me #like yes michael has issues the size of ten galaxies combined. but honestly so does adam #and even though adam has a tendency to brush talk of his feelings off like they're nothing in 15x08 #michael does reach out! more than once! so there's no reason to assume he wouldn't about this as well #kate rambles #we came to an agreement #michael #adam milligan #midam

once upon a time i liked a ship for what it was and then i saw how the fandom treated it and now i have visceral hatred towards it (harsh but not far off)

#this is about to be a very really truely deeply personal post #but ive been thinking about this for years and i need to get it out of my head so please bare with me #the number of times i have SERIOUSLY considered converting to Judaism is ridiculous #there are a lot of things pulling me towards it #like maybe i should finally just bite the bullet and go talk to a rabbi #BUT the main thing holding my back is i do not currently believe in any sort of God #but maybe that's just bc my main understanding of God is through a Christian lens and I genuinely hate the xtian concept of God #i would rather burn in hell than worship the xian god #so maybe i just have too much Christian angst? i dont know #literally have been having this debate with myself for YEARS #what do i do i dont know 😭😭😭 #aahhhhhh #I'm just ????? i dont know man #what if my desire to convert is born out of a rebellion towards christianity? that doesn't seem like a fair reason to convert #but it doesn't /feel/ like a rebellion but whenever ever I'm confronted with something Christian I'm just filled with a deep feeling of #resentment and anger #like i try to be cool and normal and keep my feeling to myself but even one of my closest friends knows to keep his Christian-ness #on lock when he's around me so I've clearly let some of the anger though on occasion #but but! the pull to convert isnt felt when I'm feeling angry at xtianity but when I'm reading about Judaism or listen to a jewish person #talk about being jewish #i dont know 😭😭😭 I'll probably just keep debating this with myself for the rest of my life and never actually act on it x_x #I'm frustrated with myself yaknkw #anyway oof personal post #ben gets personal #like super personal

There’s something weirdly nice about finding out you’re not the only person who dislikes someone. It’s such a relief to be able to be like “okay thank God I can bitch about this person now”

#was (gently) complaining to my grandparents about two of my neighbours (who happen to be best friends with my mom and my stepdad) #and my granddad said ‘to be honest i’m fairly neutral about j [the woman] but i’ve never liked r [her husband]’ #and i was like ‘oh thank GOD’ #and just started airing my grievances #to be honest it was a fairly safe bet though because my grandma likes approximately two people in the world and those are me and mabel #and my granddad has a world class bullshit detector. he’s kind of like me in that he’s mild-mannered and will be civil to people #he doesn’t like; but he will avoid having to be around them at all costs #so i kind of knew that he wouldn’t like these people #like R is genuinely awful. he’s one of the most obnoxious people i’ve ever had the displeasure of meeting. he’s in his late sixties #but behaves like a twelve year old boy. it’s absolutely horrendous. he’s rude to wait staff; tries to guilt me into hugging him #(i never have and never will); is constantly breaking his laptop and acting like an absolute baby when he has to request tech support #(i did tech support for him ONCE and thereafter i’ve been pretending to be illiterate); and he bullies people in his hobby #just generally not a good man. the One thing i somewhat like about him is he’s nice to animals #kim and freddie both loved him and he was surprisingly really gentle and patient with them. mabel also seems to like him #but she loves big men so that was sort of a given #meanwhile J is just… she’s also obnoxious but not to the same level. but she does annoy the hell out of me #we’re both knitters but we have a completely different approach to the hobby (which honestly isn’t surprising because like.. i challenge you #to find two knitters who do the same things lol) and she feels the need to belittle a lot of what i do #like my love of knitting in the round; my complete inability to get the hang of embroidery; how slow i knit; etc. #she knits exclusively on long straight needles; lightning fast; and she makes mostly stuffed animals and dolls for kids #which i think is fantastic! it’s really difficult imo. i made literally one chicken and getting all its features right took so much #out of me that i’ve never made an animal since. partly because i really dislike sewing and embroidery honestly #she sees these things as a personal failure on my part and she’s also kind of derisive of how slow i knit which….. it’s not a race?? #i don’t sell stuff on the craft booths like she does so i’m not bound to a deadline. 90% of what i make is a gift and the other 10% #is stuff for me that i thought would be cool. or i just wanted to learn a technique. and i’m primarily a process knitter anyway #i do it to help me focus on tv or podcasts because otherwise i just Cannot #… this became a rant i wasn’t intending to have. suffice to say; i don’t like my mom’s friends lol #it’s not anyone’s fault. they’re just loud and obnoxious and give me opinions i never asked for #personal
