Heaven’s Jewel ~ Diavolo
Tumblr media
(( Honestly, this gif was cute, but it’s completely unrelated to the story x As well as that, to get some more relevancy to the story, I will use the name “Seraphine” for the reader, because she is going to be a Seraph, and describing her appearance would make much more sense with some particularities ^^ ))
---
Seraphine, otherwise known as the Heaven’s Jewel, God’s most favourite Seraph, as she was his most devout, his most beloved, his most beautiful angel, always by his side...Was forced to leave Heaven.
It’s not that she was against it, it was more like, she never had a choice of her own regarding her life, hence why she found refuge in praying and worshipping God during all days and nights, without rest.
Ever since she was a low-ranking angel, at her very beginnings, she showed immense potential, so Laila and Abbadon, two regular angels that were tasked with finding the perfect she-angel, forcefully recruited her, to make her become the perfect angel, and as well as that, the perfect lawful and obedient traditional wife.
Her role was now to become the perfect wife for her future husband, the future Prince of Devildom, Diavolo, as his father started pressuring him to find someone to marry and properly rule the Underworld - The only catch was that she wasn’t the only candidate, nor was she the sole race, and she was nervous.
Seraphine never knew what life was, only doing what she was taught and commanded, in fear of disappointing everyone in the Celestial Realm, especially God, so she tried her best, despite how bad it made her feel.
The fated day appeared, and Seraphine was garbed in the most pure angel robes, her long, pale pink hair cascading down her shoulders in graceful and effortless waves, as Laila brushed it.
“You know what you have to do, Seraphine. Just like we taught you. Hide your face and feet and only talk to us or the Prince, and that, only whispering in our ears. We don’t want anyone else to hear your voice, alright? They are not worthy of hearing a Seraph’s voice.” Laila spoke strictly, as she put a blue bow in her hair, and helped her get up. “Now get in your Angel form and let’s go. We don’t want the Prince to wait. You MUST succeed, no matter what. This is the connection that God wants, you mustn’t disappoint Him.” she warned, looking at her with cold eyes.
The girl only nodded, standing and turning into her Angelic form, her pink hair turning iridescent, 3 pairs of long, majestic wings that resembled matching iridescent feathers and light emanating from them, as she used the top pair to cover her face, and the bottom one to cover her feet, as the rule said, using the middle one to fly together with her two companions to the Castle, where they were greeted and guided by the steward into the large ball room where the auburn haired Demon Prince was awaiting with a huge welcoming grin on his face.
She knew she should peak through the feathers, but she couldn’t help but look with one eye at the man in front of her, but only that, as she didn’t want to attract attention, and she knew she’d be too intimidated by the other candidates.
His voice was so warm and inviting, she didn’t understand how he could be a Demon, as Laila and Abbadon would only preach how gruesome and malefic these Underworld being can be...But how can someone so cheerful be malevolent?
Succubi, demons, lower angels, vampires, fairies, werewolves, even humans and many more other races came to get a chance for wealth and power from this kind man in front of them, but no matter how much they tried to fake it, Diavolo could easily discern truth from lie.
And even so, his amber eyes were fixated on the highest ranking angel in the room, as she quite literally emanated light, kindness, warmth, safety and love, solely with her presence, and so, he was attracted to her like moths to the light.
Of course, as soon as Seraphine realised he was smiling at her, her eyes widened, so she quickly covered her face again, putting even her hands on her face to cover the blush of embarrassment as she was already screwing up.
This cute gesture seemed to warm up the Prince’s heart, however, as he chuckled mirthfully, commenting on her beauty.
“My, and I thought Lucifer was beautiful. You are, by far, ethereal, for lack of better words existing in any vocabulary. You must be Seraphine, am I correct?” Diavolo spoke, but as soon as she heard the familiar name being spoken, she gasped quietly, and scattered her feathers slightly, looking at him with her doe-like aquamarine eyes, almost as if they were trying to scream ‘Do you know Lucifer?’.
She quickly looked at her companions to earn the approval to talk, and as soon as they nodded, she slowly stepped to the Prince’s side, lifting her upper wings only by a little, to allow her to put a hand to his ear and whisper.
“Yes, my name is Seraphine, it’s great to finally meet you, Your Highness. You mentioned Lucifer...Do you perhaps know him?” the girl’s voice was soft and crystal-like, almost sending shivers down the Demon’s spine, and that alone was enough of a sign to convince him that she as the one.
Hell, he didn’t even care if he was going to marry her or not, but he wanted to have her by his side, to talk to her, to see her, to get to know her. He was sure he would eventually, or rather said, very soon, fall in love with her...But could such a pure and innocent being be able to grow feelings for a being so immoral and evil as he was?
In the end, Diavolo obviously chose Seraphine, and now, a long period of getting to know each other was going to follow, where she was going to stay by his side at all times, and act like the traditional wife she was supposed to be.
That night, in the grand bedroom of the Prince, Diavolo was dressed in his sleepingwear, while the girl was standing there, quite awkwardly, next to the door, her wings still hiding her, as she wasn’t sure what she was supposed to do, and quite frankly, the idea of a ‘Bedding Ceremony’, as Abbadon called it, frightened her greatly.
Seeing her distress, Diavolo the quick to ease her worries, as he stood in front of her, speaking to her with an almost uncharacteristic sweet tone.
“Seraphine, dear, you don’t have to worry. I saw how they were treating you, but here, things are different. Nobody will tell you what to do. In fact, you can do whatever you want. If it will make you feel more comfortable, you can sleep in my room, and I will go to another one, I don’t mind. Oh, and you don’t have to keep this form if you don’t want to, most demons here, including me, prefer to keep a more casual form.” he told her as a way to ease her worries, which seemed to have an effect on her, despite still being reluctant.
Covering her face with her hands, she let the halo and wings disappear, as she stepped to the side, going on her tippy-toes to whisper in his ear, only to have him gently grab her wrists, putting them away from her face, gazing tenderly at her glowing, innocent face.
“Let me hear your beautiful voice, Seraphine. You don’t have to whisper any longer. Actually, I believe hearing your voice will be quite a blessing for everyone here.” he reassured her once again, as she nodded slightly, looking down, not able to look him in the eyes, due to the shyness. “A-Are you sure it is alright for me to speak so freely to other demons?” she asked in a quiet voice, but she was making progress. “Of course! You see, I believe in the equality of races, and above anything else, I wish to bring the Human World, the Celestial Realm and the Devildom together, to live in harmony. In fact, that is why I created an exchange-student program, and we even have 2 angels and 2 humans here.” he guided her to the sofa, where he lounged casually, while she stood stiff and upright, until the man chuckled and eased her into a more comfortable position. “I don’t understand...You seem light such a lovely person...You go out of your way to make sure I’m alright...And yet, I only heard terrible things of your kin. I-It’s not fair...” she hugged her knees to herself, before noticing the subtle frown on his face. “I-I-I’m sorry, forgive me for speaking out of place! I-I didn’t mean to offend you! I’m not used to...Speaking too much.” she hid her face with her hands once again, earning a soft chuckle. “Don’t worry, you didn’t offend me. I know there are countless prejudices, especially from lower-ranking demons...Even Lucifer refused to look at me, since I was not worthy, even a long time after he became one of the fallen.” Diavolo grinned playfully as he noticed the girl perk up as soon as she heard that name. “Lucifer...Is here as well...?” she looked at him with wide, hopeful eyes. “Of course. He has been here since the Celestial War. He was one of the Seraphim, along with you, wasn’t he?” Diavolo asked, already knowing the answer. “Yes...He was God’s most favourite angel, while I was Heaven’s Jewel. But he wasn’t alone. I always envied him for being allowed to stay with his brothers...I used to look up to him for his courage. And then, he rebelled, and they followed. The place became empty and dull...Almost like it lost its colour.” she explained the situation with obvious sorrow in her eyes. “Hmm...I have an idea! How would you like to become one of the exchange students? Surely, that would prove to be fun for you, and Lucifer and his brothers will be great guides for you. This place is always lively with them around.” Diavolo suggested, making the girl look at him with an expression that was starting to have life. “I-Is that really okay? I don’t want to be a bother to anyone! I don’t know how to behave around other people...And if they find out about...Us...They might treat me with more privilege and respect than I deserve, and I wouldn’t want that.” Seraphine pointed out, biting her lip softly. “Hahaha, don’t worry about that! The only people who are going to know are Barbatos, my steward, and maybe the angels who came here. If you don’t want, I won’t even tell Lucifer or his brothers. That’s going to make for even more fun.” he laughed mirthfully imagining that. “With so many different and unique individuals, there’s no way you’re going to be able to stay hidden in your little timid shell. I can see you are a curious little fawn, you just needed to be released from your cage. Now it’s your chance to see the world. You’re not going to cause anyone trouble, I promise. In fact, I’m positive your presence is going to be very welcomed by everyone.” Diavolo extended his hand towards her, to help her up, before planting a soft kiss on her forehead, making her look at him with great confusion. “What was that?” she asked in a voice barely above a whisper. “That, my dear, was a sign of affection. It was a kiss.” he answered, looking fondly at her blushing cheeks. “Affection...? What is that?” she asked once again, not sure of herself. “It’s a way to show that you care for someone dear to you.” he explained once again, with never ending patience. “That...Means that you care for me? Someone you just met a few hours ago? Is that possible?” she blinked in utter surprise at him. “Of course. Some people are just that special. And besides, by the look on your face, I’m quite sure you feel the same way about me, you just don’t realise that yet. It’s getting late, you should go sleep now. Barbatos is going to come by tomorrow morning and prepare you for school. Sweet dreams, Seraphine.” he smiled gently at her as he exited the room, leaving her all alone, confused and with a myriad of mixed emotions.
Quite frankly, she has never experienced so much turmoil...Or rather said, hasn’t felt since the descending of Lucifer and his brothers, where she only watched with jealousy, as she wanted to do the same, but couldn’t, out of fear and restrained.
Diavolo was right, she was nothing more than a caged bird, an animal shackled and raised only for the purpose of forming an allegiance with the future Demon King...But Diavolo...He seemed to not care at all about these trivial things.  He seemed to genuinely care for her well-being and how she fares in this new place that she was brought against her will - He even let her sleep in his own bedroom, just to make sure she was comfortable.
She wasn’t used to such kindness, but she wasn’t going to turn it down.  She was going to make the best out of this situation and learn how to be herself, her curious little self, the one that has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and wants to see the world, every inch of it.
---
The next day, Barbatos came to serve her breakfast in bed, while informing her that she would be staying 5 days a week in the House of Lamentation as a guest, so she’ll have to adapt to living with Lucifer and his brothers, and how the elder brother is going to be her guide around their Dorms and RAD...Royal Academy of Diavolo.
With such a name, there’s sure to be lots of fun around.
As soon as she saw the brunet man, he looked at her with wide eyes, incredibly shocked at seeing the girl in front of him, dressed in her usual day to day angelic outfit, and even more, hearing she’ll be studying there for the rest of the year.
“My, I wouldn’t have expected the most beloved Jewel to somehow end up in a place like this, especially with those low-lives constantly around her. Tell me, how did you manage?” Lucifer smirked, seeing the girl pout. “We finally get to properly talk, after seeing each other for so many centuries, and the first thing you decide to do is jab at me. How cruel.” she shook her head, a playful smile on her face, before stopping stiff and looking at him with a worried expression, covering her mouth with her hands, as per the habit imbued in her. “I wasn’t mean, was I? I’m so sorry if I was, Lucifer, I didn’t mean to, I-I just-” she fussed over her words, only to have him genuinely chuckle at her attempt to apologise. “You worry over nothing. We are demons, you’re not going to offend anyone by being a shy little rabbit. In fact, I believe my brothers are going to fuss over you quite a lot. And if that wasn’t enough, Simeon and Luke are sure to steal you away from us.” he put his arm around the girl’s shoulder, as he felt himself at peace, much lighter and content, as he showed her around the place, until they had to go to class and Lucifer introduced the girl to everyone, earning a lot of gasps.
Of course, the girl couldn’t concentrate too much on the boring lecture, as she already knew everything that was being explained...After all, she was one of the Seraphim, she wouldn’t be worthy of one, and especially not one fated to marry the future King of Devildom, if she didn’t know such basic knowledge, so she indulged into doodling some flowers, waiting eagerly for the class to end, so she could talk to everyone, realising that the nervousness she felt was being overshadowed by curiosity and eagerness.
When the class ended, there were only the brothers and the angels left, while the girl could only blush softly from all the attention and wave as a greeting.
“It’s great seeing you again, Seraphine. I wasn’t quite expecting you to be brought here as an exchange student, but I’m more than happy to see more familiar faces.” Simeon’s gentle voice spoke up the first. “But! But! Why would you accept?! You’re a Seraph, this place is tainted! You shouldn’t have to taint yourself, you could have refused!” Luke whined in confusion and opposition. “Oh great, the Chihuahua is yappin’ again.” Mammon chuckled in amusement. “Chihuahua...? Y-You mean Luke? You nicknamed him Chihuahua?!” she had to cover her mouth to stop herself from laughing, but in her eyes, a sparkle of amusement was obvious. “How dare you call me that! I may be a low-ranking angel, but I’ll have you know, I report directly to the Archangel Michael!” Luke started trashing around in anger, making the girl unable to stop her giggles, making everyone around her quiet, as her voice was nothing less than a loving lullaby to their ears. “I-I guess I can see the resemblance now.” she joked around, making the others chuckle as well. “H-How c-can you say that?!” Luke almost looked like he could cry, which made the girl pat his head gently. “We’re just teasing, don’t worry, we mean you no harm. Liven up a bit.” she smiled softly, which seemed to brighten up the whole classroom. “Hey, Seraphine, wanna play video games with me?” Levi practically bounced on his place, with a huge grin. “Sure, that would be fun, but you’ll have to teach me first. Please go easy on me!” she nodded eagerly. “Ehh? No, Raphie’s going to come shopping with me! Oh, I can even go to Diavolo and propose to let me design her uniform!” Asmo hugged the girl tightly, rubbing his face to hers, like a kitten. “O-Oi, Asmo, get the hell away from her! And besides, Seraphine’s comin’ gamblin’ with me! I’m sure she’d like to see different things from up there, right?” Mammon suggested, proud of himself. “Then, would you like to go to a restaurant with me, Seraphine? Taste the Devildom cuisine for the first time?” Beel smiled softly. “And then I can show you the best places to take a nap.” Belphie’s smile mimicked that of his twin’s. “And we can go to various book shops and cat cafes and discuss book and movie theories, if you’d like.” Satan suggested as well. “Do I really get no time with her? How selfish you all are.” Lucifer scoffed in annoyance. “Don’t worry, we have a whole year to spend together. I will allow all the free time I have for all of you!”  she flashed them a dazzling smile, and everyone seemed to calm down.
Of course, every day, she’d get caught up in one of the brothers’ endless shenanigans, and each night, she’d text and call Diavolo to ramble about her day and the new things she discovered, only to go full-hype when weekend came and she was able to go see him and spend the whole day with him.
From drinking tea together and gossiping, to having strolls around either Devildom or the Human world, seeing the sunrise and sunset together, going ice-skating, or watching a movie together, they didn’t even realise how much their feelings for each other started to grow.
She told him how her and Mammon had to hide from Lucifer as he got mad for going and wasting money on gambling, so she wrapped her wings around him to hide them from his elder brother.
She twirled around in her new uniform that had the colours of the Celestial Realm, but the pattern from RAD, so she learnt not to be embarrassed with showing skin, since it wasn’t improper, as she was told, and even better, that her and Asmo were designing the perfect dress for him, and they were looking around for materials.
She told him about all the wonderful books she read as per Satan’s recommendation, and even showed him the magic spells, just like in Harrison Porter’s book series.
She told him how she missed class one day because her and Levi were caught binge-playing video games all night long and weren’t able to wake up, and thus, she did the “this book is too high for me, can you help me?” trick on him, that she learnt from one of his dating sims, which amused Diavolo a lot, despite Lucifer being confused as hell.
She told him how Beel paid to show her all the best food around Devildom, so she could get a bite from all of them, and after that, Belphie guided them to the roof, where the breeze was just perfect, like the sight of the City, and they took a nap on his cow-patterned pillow.
And of course, last but not least, she told him how she tried to help Lucifer ease up, since he’s not a robot without feelings, and he should learn how to communicate and understand his family better, otherwise all his benevolent intentions will become misinterpreted.
That night, she stood on his lap, in his bed, as they gossiped carelessly, not caring that he was THE Prince and she was THE Jewel.  No, they were just Diavolo and Seraphine, two beings from different races, who understood each other and got along so well, despite all odds being against them.
“Hey, Hey, Dia. Can you show me your Demon form again? I didn’t quite get to see you then.” she grinned happily at him, as he could only chuckle and transform right under her in his true self. “Are you happy now?” he teased her lightly. “Ohhh, I knew it! You have gold ornaments on your horns! Ahhh, so pretty!” she exclaimed, running her fingers softly on his horns. “What is it like? To have horns? Does it hurt whenever you get back in your true form? Do you ever bump into things because of them?” she asked, not caring for even a second about the inhibitions she had in the past. “Hahaha, no, they don’t hurt, but I quite like when you touch them like that. And no, I never bumped into anything...No, actually, I did, when I was hurrying and opened a door, only for it to hit my horns and slam shut.” he laughed mirthfully, as he put his arms around her waist. “No waaaaay, poor dear! That must have been funny to watch!” she giggled, turning her head around to look at his bat-like wings, reaching out to touch them, only to stop immediately in her tracks, looking at him with an apologetic smile.. “Why did you stop?” Diavolo tilted his head in confusion like a lost puppy. “I forgot to ask for permission, I’m sorry. They are so beautiful, I forgot myself...Nobody ever touched my wings, so I would feel uncomfortable too if I were you.” she scratched the back of her head with a guilty smile. “If it’s you, I don’t mind. You are welcomed to touch them whenever you feel like it. Your touch does lots of things to me.” Diavolo chuckled lowly, but the girl paid no mind, as she started stroking them. “If it relaxes you, I’m happy. They are so soft too, woaw! This is amazing!” she grinned, as he used his wing to caress her cheek, making her giggle even more. “Will you show me yours now? It’s only fair, isn’t it?” he smirked playfully, as the girl looked at him with wide eyes, as she started blushing furiously. “Is that how you demons do things? Someone asks you something, and then you ask for something in return?” she jabbed back with no shame at all. “Forgive me, it’s in my nature to be a little jerk like that.” he chuckled lightly, as he got busted. “Well...Since it’s you...I guess it can’t hurt.” she muttered, looking away as she transformed in her Seraph form, and instinctively, she hid her form with her wings. “Your beauty never ceases to amaze me, Seraphine.” Diavolo’s voice became much softer, as he gently pulled away the wings to see her radiating face, as the whole room was engulfed with a divine light that seemed to ease his heart. “Don’t flatter me, Diavolo, you’re making me feel weird...” she muttered, looking down timidly. “I’m just telling the truth! You truly are the most ethereal being I have ever laid my eyes upon.” he confessed, caressing her face softly, looking at her with such a tender look that it made her heart skip a few beats. “Now I understand how Lucifer feels whenever you throw a bunch of random compliments at him.” she only blushed further, closing her eyes, feeling the warm touch of his hands. “That is true, but nothing compares to your cute face. But that’s only for me to see.” he chuckled, as he started stroking some of her feathers with one hand, while the other was snaked around her waist, pulling her flush against his bare chest, to stop her from jerking away in shyness. “You’re merciless.” she bit her lip, burying her face in the crook of his neck as her hands found refuge on his tanned chest. “Won’t you touch me more? Your touch is making me feel...What is the correct term...Heavenly.” he let himself hit the pillow and he guided her delicate hands down his chest, as the girl could only look at him with confusion. “I don’t really understand...How can my touch make you feel as good as you say?” she spoke with such innocence and naivite that it took every ounce of self-control the Demon Prince possessed not to hurry and taint her...He needed all the patience he has, and it will be worth it, for both of them. “If you’re that confused, tell me what you feel now.” he put his hand on the back of her head, slowly leaning her down to kiss her gently, her wings spreading completely as she melted into the kiss. “By your reaction, I can see that you liked it.” “...Heavenly.” she giggled softly, making the man laugh at her choice of words, as he pulled her gently beneath her, brushing away the hair from her face, and putting his forehead to hers.  “I love you, Seraphine. My days are always brighter when you’re by my side.” he confessed softly, kissing her once again, with more fire this time. “I love you, Diavolo. Thank you for choosing me...And for having so much patience with me.” she looked at him with so much love, a few tears glistening in her azure eyes, like diamonds in the mirror sheen of the ocean.
There was only one heartbeat, one soul, one body, and one love, as feelings were overflowing from both of them, and it seemed like the room’s temperature went up by 30 degrees at least.
---
Almost a year passed since Seraphine was sent to Devildom, and the exchange student program was almost at the end, which was rather sad, but even so, with how successful this was, Diavolo was sure something like this would happen again pretty soon, so more fun will happen.
However, that day, as Seraphine and Lucifer were walking down the RAD’s corridors, chatting casually, as all of a sudden, two beads of light appeared in front of them, only to reveal Laila and Abbadon.
“Uh...Hello? Long time no see?” the girl looked at them with a weird look on her face. “What is this behaviour?! Walking and talking out loud so casually with a Fallen? In such a skimpy outfit? And you’re not even hiding, like a true Seraphim would?! This is not how we raised you!” Laila yelled at her, making both Seraphine and Lucifer look at them with wide eyes. “...I don’t see what’s the problem. I’m not under your control anymore, so why are you talking like that to me? As long as Diavolo has no problem with what I’m doing, I don’t see why you should.” she shrugged nonchalantly, as Abbadon got in front of her, towering over her small form, his eyes holding strictness and harshness, as he grabbed her shoulders. “You are not fit to be the Wife of the future Demon Lord! You have become a disgrace...You stink of demon...You are tainted! We are taking you straight home for a purifying ritual. What a disappointment you turned out to be!” his rough voice growled at her, but for the first time, none of their threats had any effect on her. “You are in Devildom, you have no authority here. Lord Diavolo is the only one who is allowed any say in any matter in this place, so I suggest you watch you tongue, you are out of place here, angels.” Lucifer defended the girl, as he glared at them. “How DARE you speak to me with that vermin tongue of yours, you, Fallen?” Abbadon’s grip tightened on her shoulder. “Back off, or I will be forced to take action. You are on the property and under the rule of my soon to be husband, so I suggest you go away without a fight.” she slapped away his hand with ease. “You?! What can YOU do?! You are nothing more than an obedient little puppet for everyone to do as they please with you!” Laila chimed in, making the girl shake her head, hearing the other brothers rush to see what was going on. “I’m not sure you realised, but almost a year passed since you left me here. you think I am the same timid rabbit that used to hide? The one that you made me? Goodness, no, this time, I am myself. And I will have to remind you that yes, I AM Diavolo’s future wife, but that doesn’t mean that I am not also Heaven’s Jewel, also known as the most powerful angel in the Celestial Realm. And what are you? Some low-ranking angels? Are you even on Luke’s level? I mean, he DOES report to Michael, doesn’t he? While all you do is waste time. So please, leave now before you anger me. I am an angel, I wouldn’t want to give in to petty sins.” she flipped her long hair, looking at them with a bored, yet defying look in her eyes. “Diavolo’s wife?! What?!” were the collective gasps she heard from around her, making her groan in annoyance. “Great, look what you’ve done. This was supposed to be a secret until later on. Now you ruined it.” she shook her head in disdain. “It’s clear that Diavolo is unfit to become the future ruler of this hell hole! He can’t even control a stupid little angel, and what’s more, he picked up all the Fallen strays from the street, like he’s some garbage collector-” Abbadon started barking, but the girl, with a simple swish of her hand, was sent flying into the wall, breaking it. “Don’t you know it’s rude to talk trash about someone’s husband like that? Especially some low-lives like you who aren’t even the scum in the trash, compared to him. And if you continue to talk...You shall receive Divine Punishment...” her voice became lower, threatening, which seemed to send shivers down everyone’s spines. “You have dishonored the whole Celestial Realm, Seraphine! You don’t deserve to be one of the Seraphim! I will report to God and we shall have you removed! You will linger with these tainted Fallens for all eternity!” Laila threatened, as she helped Abbadon stand up, and they transformed in their angel forms, as Diavolo came by, putting his hands on Seraphine’s shoulders from behind. “I can feel the anger seething through you, darling. What is it that you want to do? I allow you to Punish them. This is my kingdom, and they came here, uninvited, out of their own accord, and insulted both rulers of this place. They are free kill, if it will make you feel better.” Diavolo spoke poison, just like a snake, in her ear. “What, the Prince is not even strong enough, so he needs his guard bitch to do the dirty work?!” Abbadon growled in pain. “With pleasure!” she grinned widely, as she stepped towards them menacingly, transforming into her angel form, and creating a large sword out of thin air. “Now you shall learn why nobody should oppose Heaven’s Jewel, dears.” she giggled darkly, as she summoned thorny vines to shackle them, as she impaled both of them.
Of course, that wouldn’t kill them, but it will serve for just the perfect amount of torturous agony for a long time.
“My Queen is absolutely breathtaking, don’t you think, Lucifer?” Diavolo hugged Seraphine from behind, rubbing his face to hers like a kitten would, only to bump the top of her head slightly with his horns. “Remember when you said you only hit the door with your horns? Add my head to the list...Because ouch, that hurt.” she shook her head, only to chuckle lightly, all the negative emotions flying away in an instant. “Why have you never told me you and Seraphine were going to get married?” Lucifer looked at Diavolo with a betrayed look. “Only Barbatos knew. We thought that if you, or anyone, for the matter, were to know, she’d be treated differently, and that wouldn’t have been fun. We wanted her to have fun and find herself and who she truly is, and hanging around with all of you helped a lot.” Diavolo chuckled as Lucifer’s frown turned into a smile, as he nodded. “Yes, you are correct, as usual. I’m happy for you two.” Lucifer congratulated, followed by the rest of the brothers. “Can I design your wedding dress?!” Asmo cheered in glee. “Can I be the Ring-Bearer?” Satan asked. “Lucifer’s definitely going to be the Best Man, so can I be the Maid of Honour?!” Levi chuckled enthusiastically. “Then can I come with the music?!” Mammon chimed in. “I’m in charge of the food.” Beel smiled softly. “I’d like to help with the decorations, then.” Belphie leaned on his twin brother, with a sleepy smile. “I say yes to all of them!” Seraphine grinned, putting her arms around Diavolo’s neck, resting on her tippy toes to reach him, as she looked at him with a tender look. “It’s going to be one hell of a Wedding, hmm~?” Diavolo chuckled, snaking his arms around her waist, pulling her closer to him. “Hella~!” she grinned, leaning in to kiss with passionately, as her wings unconsciously wrapped around him. “That’s the gorgeous smile that I love to see.” his own wings wrapped protectively around her as well.
As soon as their kiss ended, she put her palms together and made a snow-white pure Lily flower, putting it in his hair, smiling softly at him. Grinning back, he created a flower crown of dark blue hydrangeas, putting it on her head.
“There you go. Now you are officially my Queen. You even have the crown to match!” Diavolo joked playfully, making everyone chuckle at the future Devil King’s antics.

Here are some Philindaisy Alternate Universe plot ideas I’m giving up for adoption. If any of you want to write them, please just credit me for the idea. These are free to do with them as you wish. No strings attached. Here you go:
Zombie Apocalypse AU:      Zombie Apocalypses are supposed to be something only in Hollywood, until Fitzsimmons’ lab is attacked and Hydra releases an Alien Virus collected from the Kree. People on base go insane, First muttering about their “calling” before going on a rampage for uninfected human flesh. Coulson and May are on a time crunch to help Fitzsimmons create a cure, while Daisy discovers that all inhumans are immune. Desperate to Get Daisy back safely, Coulson and May head out to bring her back, fighting through those who were former colleagues.      When the virus takes hold of Phil, suddenly everything gets worse as Melinda has to wrangle him back to safety, along with an unconscious Daisy…
Pirate AU:    While on a raid, Pirate Captain Melinda May stumbles across Tavern Cook Phil Coulson. She spares him, (mostly because he was shirtless and easy on the eyes), and forces him along to work in the galley of her ship. Very quickly, Melinda falls for him. They spar at one point, Phil proves himself with both sword and firearm, and Melinda raises his status in rank. Eventually, he saves her life and she makes him first mate, much to the horror and jealousy of former first mate Grant Ward.    Melinda makes Grant Ward walk the plank eventually when he betrays her and tries to kill Melinda in her sleep. Luckily, Phil had been there, doing a fine job at keeping May far from sleep (wink, wink). Little does she know that he is soon picked up by a trading ship. While Melinda makes herself Pirate Queen of the High Seas, she becomes closer and closer to Phil Coulson. During a raid on a small port, Melinda pucks up a child, a seven-year-old orphan girl named Daisy, and brings her aboard with the excuse that she could wash dishes, when really Melinda begins training her in combat. Phil helps as well, and other crew members challenge Melinda, saying she is getting soft. Phil discourages the potential mutiny, and teaches Crew member!Lance Hunter, a thing or two about respecting the ladies.     Eventually Grant Ward returns with a fleet of ships he has conquered, hellbent on getting his revenge and seizing Melinda’s hefty cargo of Pirate Treasure…
Medieval AU:      New King Phillip of House Coulson is set to pick a bride. His mother, Queen dowager Julie, has set before him the best choices for alliances, the lovely Lady Audrey, and Duchess Rosalind. But one night at the ball, Phillip is enchanted with the quiet woman who dances with incredible grace and style. She’s exotic in beauty and Phil is smitten when, alone with her on a balcony, the woman stops an attempted assassination. Phillip had found his bride, Lady Melinda of house May. But his mother may not be so happy, insisting that Phil choose from her selection. When the wedding day comes, Phillip lies to Lady Audrey, and sets Melinda in a duplicate dress, her face covered by a thick veil. By the time their vows are said, and the veil removed, Julie has nothing to say except to welcome Melinda into the family with the most forced smile Phillip has ever seen. Phil finally gets to kiss his bride.     It takes only several moons before Julie is told an Heir is on it’s way. A proud future grandmother, Queen Dowager Julie orders a magical reading of the unborn child. The magician has nothing to say, only leaves screaming like a madman. Afraid for what that means, Melinda is hidden from the public until the royal couple’s long awaited son -erm- daughter is born, a healthy baby girl whom they name Daisy. But soon it becomes apparent that the child is much more powerful then she seems, and Julie is blaming Melinda for bewitching the child....
Shapeshifter AU:      Melinda May-Coulson never shape-shifts. It’s simply easier to hide her gift then to flaunt it and be despised. Most people can shift into a small animal. Dogs, cats, bears, owls, and snakes are common. Horses and Lions are considered lucky. Some are even more amazing, holding within themselves more mythical forms. Every now and then, Griffins and Pegasi are made celebrities. But Melinda? Melinda is the only dragon she has ever heard of. So she is ashamed, hides her form until it becomes unbearable and she shifts alone in her home, filling the entire living room with shining dark blue and glittering silver scales, always leaving behind a scent of burnt tea and Lavender when she stretches her tight coil.       Phil is a more common form, simply a golden retriever that Melinda finds adorable. Sometimes he shifts to make her happy, running around her legs in circles, looking up at her with those big, round, soft blue eyes. He doesn’t ask for her to shift, has never seen her completely. He doesn’t judge her secrecy, understands it even, saying he knew someone who was a rat. (Melinda insists she is much more regal than a rat, of all things)       Life goes on until Phil’s friend, Maria, gives them a call about a girl that desperately needs a home. So the Coulson’s take her in, a little girl right out of the Hunan province in China, a new American name, Daisy, foreign to her ears, speaking rapidly in broken Mandarin that only Melinda understands.       One day, Daisy comes home early with Phil, and they walk outside into the backyard to find Melinda in her dragon form, and to Phil’s shock, Daisy screams with surprise and with a spark of light, becomes a dragon herself, finding her way to Melinda. Blue and silver scales shine with White and gold while a golden retriever yaps happily between them.
Hunger Games AU:    Hunger Games Victor Melinda May is living her quiet life with her husband Phil Coulson and single daughter, Daisy, in the Victor’s Village of district seven. But as the year’s days come closer and closer to the  reaping, Melinda suffers her annual PTSD from the horrors of her time in the arena, twelve years ago. Waking up in cold sweats or to the sound of her own scream is nothing new to  Melinda, her dreams haunted with the faces of the other tributes she’d watched die.    As her daughter nears fifteen, Melinda fears more and more until the inevitable happens; and Daisy is drawn as this year’s female tribute of District seven, alongside of Lincoln Campbell. Mournfully, Melinda is forced to accompany her own daughter on the train to The Capital, and give her five days of training and support before Daisy is thrust into the nightmare of the Hunger Games. Under strict orders from President Snow, Melinda has to force herself not to be biased while helping out both Daisy and Lincoln. While Phil watches at home, Melinda breaks while her daughter marches into a certain death sentence…
Star Wars AU:     Phil is the perfect Jedi. Bound to the code, completing all his missions successfully and with ease. Melinda? Melinda is a more radical Jedi. She breaks the code left and right, follows the force instead of the rules. She is unable to stay in one place for long, always moving with her fifth year Palawan, Daisy Johnson.      While on a mission, the two are paired up, living undercover as royals to another planet, Daisy poses as their princess daughter, meaning to try to swoon the prince, Robbie Reyes in order to get information while Jedi Masters May and Coulson search the palaces and crime families. But old fires are reignited, and Phil has to bury the feelings for Melinda while they advise Daisy to do the same, with the predicament at hand; Phil is hopelessly in love with Melinda, and Daisy might be in love with her perfect prince fit for a Jedi knight…
Matrix AU:     Living on the Zephyr, proud sister ship to the  Nebuchadnezzar, Captain Melinda May trains her new recruits, a handful of young adults fresh out of the Matrix. Her co-captain, Phil Coulson helps her as they navigate their confusing, underground world. But with a ship full of uncontrollable youngsters, the kids take it upon themselves to get the two captains together.
Demon AU:     When Audrey is killed in a car accident, Phil, under the guilt that it was his fault, takes it upon himself to revive his girlfriend. One night alone at a bar, he finds what he’s looking for. A woman who shimmers with an unearthly aura of sinful villainy. So Phil makes a deal, and Audrey is brought back, but Phil must stay with his new mistress: a demon under the name Melinda, better known as the Cavalry. He becomes her sex toy, like a human pet she keeps.  Phil soon discovers that the longer he stays with Melinda, the more hellish he becomes. Soon he has to make a choice; stay human, or accept his fate and find that there is more to Melinda then what meets his reddening eyes.      By the time Phil is no longer visible to the human eye unless he wills it, Phil has said goodbye to Audrey, and returned to Melinda’s side, ready to watch her belly grow. Somehow, someway, what was left of his human flesh has sparked a life inside his mistress, and Melinda is unsure what this means. As Phil falls for Melinda, the weight of his deal with her lessens, and therefor he pledges himself to her, for the rest of eternity.      When the child is born, Melinda misses her free days, and gives Phil their daughter, breaking off their deal. But Phil no longer wants Audrey. He wants to have Melinda back. So he sets off to reclaim her, all the while working through the surprises raising a half-demon child holds.
Writer/Editor  AU:     Phil is an esteemed author, having written the hits of the teen and young adult section. Melinda is an editor, desperate to get a job, and quick. She finds Phil in need of an Editor, and she snatches up the opportunity. As they spend more time together working though, Melinda starts to fall for him.      Daisy is Melinda’s adopted daughter. After school, she has found herself taking the bus to Phil’s house instead of her own. Her Mom is acting weird, more cheerful than usual and always talking about how wonderful her client’s book is going to be. Daisy just wants her mom back to herself again, without distracting men taking up her time. But on the flip side, Phil Coulson is a bright man who respects her, and always gives full attention to a conversation (Something Daisy craves). He’s kind and generous, even helps out when May sues her neighbor, Grant Ward, for sexual harassment. Daisy can’t help but not like Phil.     As Melinda edits Phil’s work, she finds herself more and more invested in him. Daisy is happier now, and Melinda has found someone she is truly comfortable talking to. When the book is finally finished, and Phil leaves for the press tour, Melinda misses him. Phil reveals that the main characters of his books are based off people he loves, and Melinda gets his memo immediately. There must be someone else.     Phil returns to May excited from the public’s reaction to his book, but disappointed when Melinda no longer sticks around. Eventually he puts the pieces together, explaining that the heroine of his book is based off Melinda herself.

Voltron Rant regarding Prince Lotor, his plans  and everything that follows...
Right now it’s late, and I’m tired, but there’s something that has been going on in my head for a while now since season 6 has come out. Recently I started to work on a long post about comments made by the staff and Lotor’s actor, regarding his behavior and I’ve seen a lot of reactions from fans in regard to anyone feeling that Lotor’s actions were justifiable, or that one should feel sorry for him for his past.
Tumblr media
Now on the one hand, it’s perfectly fine to have a sympathetic villain. A lot of shows have that and they are stronger for it. On the other hand, if you’re having someone do villainous acts, please have the character own those acts rather than, saying that they just need help and hugs. Or that it’s a nature vs. nurture thing, because in a lot of cases one could use characters that fall into the same tragic area as Lotor and point out the folly of this statement.
Now while I have nothing but mad respect for the Voltron creative team and the cast, I do think that they’re making a bit of a bad choice in how they’re wording things in regard to Lotor. Because they are painting him in a very “Draco in leather pants” way, which will not go down looking good should the character not get redeemed, and even if he does, it still doesn’t look good.
Again I really love him as a character, I just wish that people would at least realize that he’s not some innocent person that has done no wrong, and, in this case, that defending his actions by putting the blame on Voltron or Romelle, or his parents, is just adding to the issue that he hasn’t fully come to accept. That he could be accepted by others, even welcomed in, if he would let go of his damn desires to go across the rift and accept that he’s both Galra and Altean.
Tumblr media
I mean, hell he had an open chance to just live the life he was talking about, but he either didn’t think about it, or didn’t see what he had right before him.
Let me try to explain, again, if this comes off as bitter or salty it’s not meant to be but it’s late and my brain is working on over drive here.
Let’s start with Lotor’s plans for the Alteans. Given what Romelle tells us Lotor has these people completely under his sway and control. They trust them with their lives, love him and worship him. This means that they would give their lives for him if he but asked. And yet, rather than just explaining his plans to these people, the ones that owe him their lives, he lies to get them to be used for his plans.
My issue with this is that it’s a cold and calculated move. Not some misguided action, it’s a deliberate choice that he had to consider before making it. Meaning that he didn’t trust his people, or that he didn’t fully understand the level of devotion that he had. Lotor could have easily talked about his plans to the Alteans there. There was no reason not to, as they trusted him. He could have explained, in detail, what he was trying to do and why it was going to benefit all of them and allow them to come out of hiding. Again given the feeling of devotion these people have, I would be damn surprised if he didn’t get a whole host of volunteers to be tested for this project and to willingly do this for the betterment of the people.
This plan that he set up was a whole folly because of the fact that there had to be better ways of doing this or getting the energy for the Quintessence. Not only that but one could argue that he had the perfect set up there for his own peaceful existence or a way there to grow his own army. The Altean’s would have happily learned to fight, or work with tech, to help build him up an army to fight his father. He’s a long living person, so why not play the long game?
Also regarding the situation with Romelle, As per JDS, I should note that he points out that Lotor could have put up his hands and let himself be arrested. He could have easily owned what he did at that moment and said “Yes, I did what she said, it was for the greater good, and I’m not ashamed of it. I’m willing to be put back in the cell while you all cool off and so we can talk. Like we have in the past.” That’s all he had to do, and yet he dumbly put himself in a weird position and later blames everyone else for his choices. Choices he made on his own. No one had a weapon at him saying you have to do any of this.
Tumblr media
Not to mention that there was a number of opportunities when he was alone with Allura where he could have mentioned the Alteans and explained everything before Keith and Romelle came in. This way not only does he look heroic, as he can put his own spin on it, but also Romelle’s impact on Allura could have been lessened some what, or at least the whole revelation could have had a different outcome.
Then there’s the fact that there’s a number of characters out there that both counter the idea that one has to end up with a “the ends justify the means” mentality from the tragic life he’s had growing up, and the idea that how you’re raised and the people around you, are what create you.
Also one could note that it’s not the fact that he didn’t have anyone around him loving him that made him make bad choices, it could just be the fact that he’s already predisposed for it due to being in the Quintessence and it makes it easier for him to naturally think the way he does.
Just to name a few: (Warning Spoilers  below the cut)
Tumblr media
Ardyn Izuna from the recent Final FantasyXV for example grew up in, as he puts it and we only have his word on this, a perfectly happy sort of household as a prince. He eventually went on to be chosen to stop the Star scourge and was to become the rightful king. However his actions during this event caused a tragic outcome that lead him to become petty and angry and want not only to destroy Noctis family, but also to remake the world for the greater good.
Like Lotor there’s a sense of entitlement to him. He’s long lived and is willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants done for his view of peace. Even if that means killing innocent people along the way to do it.
Tumblr media
I can also point out at the same time to Char Aznable of Gundam. Not only does he lose his parents to a straight up murder by a friend of the family, he later loses a friend because the guy looks like him. Char’s goal is the destruction of the Zabi family and he’s a very complex character who chooses to kill his friend and the most innocent person in the Zabi family, Gharma Zabi, even though they’re best friends, just because he was born into the wrong family. Gharma had nothing to do with the death of Char’s parents, and yet, for what he feels is the greater good for the Space Colonies, he needs to wipe them all off the face of the earth.
Both of these guys have the same issue that Lotor does, that the ends justify the means, and that by taking the actions that they do they think in the end they will make the world a better place in some way. There is also the selfish aspect too in them, where even if their choices are purely based on real feelings, under that there’s still a sense of “I want something.” Which is still a selfish thing, and again, they still are villains as they take villainous actions that they don’t need to to achieve what they want.
Tumblr media
And what of a character like Folken de Fanel, who chose to go to the side of evil because he felt it would bring about the greater good, and protect his brother. He didn’t realize how bad his actions had become until he killed two of the people he had saved as children. Prior to that time he had told Van, his younger brother and hero of Escaflowne, that he was willing to keep doing bad things if it meant innocent people like Van could live in a world where they didn’t have to fear war or pain, or sadness. After the death of the two cat girls that he raised, he actually owned what he had done and was willing to face trial and his own death that he had made happen on himself. He even turned sides at that point.
Tumblr media
On the other end of this, you have someone like Voldemort who actually got help and yet still became evil.
Then you have the other side of the coin, where the characters also had bad lives, didn’t have good influences but became heroic characters.
Tumblr media
Levi from Attack on Titan, for example, grew up in the slums. Lost his mother at a young age, became a thief and pretty much grew up with a lot of rough people. Yet he wound up meeting Erwin at an older age (late teens or early 20s) and was already a good person who wanted to do right.
Tumblr media
Then you have Sha Gojyo from the Saiyuki manga series. Gojyo grew up with an abusive mother who had sex with his elder brother who had to pretend to be his own father so she wouldn’t beat Gojyo. Not only that, but him being a half demon, half human made him a target for beatings and harm. His own step mother tried at one point to murder him and he nearly just let her do that to make her happy, and his brother had to kill her to stop her. He was abandoned at the age of ten and left to fend for himself. Yet he’s one of the kindest and most honest of the Sayuki crew, willing to go out of his way, even as he complains, to help those in need as the story moves along.
The idea that Lotor’s upbringing is one of the points for him making his choices is fine, but it’s good to remember that just because you grow up in a bad situations doesn’t mean you’re going to make bad choices and do villainous things.
One last character really fast, which I think highlights some of the issues regarding Lotor’s actions for me.
Tumblr media
Recently Black Butler revealed that the main character Ciel phantomhive has a twin brother. Because of this we’ve also recently learned he’s more than a little obsessive over his twin brother, and may have been behind his own parents murders as a means of keeping his brother to him self. On top of that you have Ciel himself, who, after suffering not only illness, but also sever physical, mental and sexual abuse, is a bit on the cold side (an understatement) and willing to make choices that a normal 13 year old really shouldn’t have to make. However, for all his gruff actions, he’s actually a loving person who does things to make others happy, even while drowning in his own despare. Keep in mind that both boys had the same pair of loving and attention giving parents.
(Manga Coloring (129 chapter) by VermeilleRose.Original art (manga page) by Yana Toboso.)
As I said above, I don’t hate Lotor. He’s a great character and a wonderful antagonist. But I do see him as a villain, and he needs to own up to his actions. What I mean by this isn’t just saying, “Yes I did this but let me explain...” he needs to own what he did. Tell them that he either feels that he’s right about the choice he made and thus feels that he was in the right, that he disagrees with them as he feels that he made the right choice, and if they can’t be allies because of it, so be it and that he has no regrets for doing it. Or that he thought he was right, and now feels that he’s wrong and wants to fix what he screwed up and accept the consequences.
No blaming the Alteans, no blaming Allura or her father, no blaming his father or mother, and no blaming Voltron for what he did. Again, no one told him to do what he did. No one, as far as we know, put the idea into his head. This was his idea and his alone, as far as we know, and if he’s not regretting doing this, than own up to it, accept the consequences, and move forward. Be that as an ally or not. Just own it and fans need to stop making excuses for him.
Being from a broken home may have contributed, but that doesn’t mean it has to make him into the person he is. As I pointed out, there are others that are in just as bad situations, who still manage to become good people and heroic in their lives. And at the same time there are bad guys that have had nothing but a loving family, and still become monsters in the end.
But actions need to have consequences, and while one can understand the actions of a character, that doesn’t mean that their actions can’t be seen by others as villainous or bad. And being misunderstood doesn’t alter the choices the person made.

I’m compiling my “reading campbell as an utena fan” reblogs into one post cuz that was getting ridiculous.
Literally no one asked for this but i took Campbell’s hero with a thousand faces out of the library and I’m going to note anything that reminds me of revolutionary girl utena. Here we go
Literally the first thing in the book, a picture of medusa’s head. I’m suddenly reminded of how much emphasis there is on anthy’s coiling locks of hair as well as her eyes. I read in a liveblog that it’s significant kanae was struck by seeing anthys eyes when she removed her glasses - the glasses serve as a protective measure meant to conceal anthy’s emotion, but also her power. Reminds me of how modern reimaginings of medusa always wear dark glasses to not turn people to stone.
Page 7, on unsolved childhood issues: “we remain fixated to the unexercised images of our infancy, and hence disinclined to the necessary passages of our adulthood” It’s not very revolutionary to suggest that this is one of the main themes of the show; akip remains in his adolescent state of having left behind his childishly idealistic self (or rather been forced to leave it by anthy) but refusing to progress to true adulthood, choosing rather to fruitlessly chase that childhood state. Other characters are guilty of this too, of course, but it’s less striking because they’re actual adolescents - this is a somewhat expected (though Campbell wpuld argue, not natural) stage in their development, whereas akio is clearly past his due date and dragging everyone down with him.
Page 30, on myths and fairy tales - “typically, the hero of the fairy tale achieves a domestic, microcosmic triumph, and the hero of myth a world-historical, macrocosmic triumph” Not super relevant to rgu itself, but I’d often wonder about the relationship between myth an fairy tale, seeing as rgu relates heavily to both. Utena’s revolution, in the end, is microcosmic - she helped a friend, and achieved a higher degree of self awareness than before.
Page 32, on the world navel: “the torrent pours from an invisible source, the point of entry being the center of the symbolic circle of the universe, the Immovable Spot of the Buddha Legend, around which the world may be said to revolve. (…) the tree of life, i.e., the universe itself, grows from this point. It is rooted in the supporting darkness; the golden sun bird perches on its peak; a spring, the inexhaustible well, bubbles at its foot. Or the figure may be that of a cosmic mountain, with the city of the gods, like a lotus of flight, upon its summit, and in its hollow the cities of the demons, illuminated by precious stones.” WHEW. Where to even begin. In the context of ohtori this would obviously be the gate in the forbidden forest, and the arena itself. There is a spring of sorts at its bottom (even a wall of water), and a bird figure features at the gate. The arena with its staircase resembles a rose, which is close enough to a tree. You could even see the black rose’s basement as the demon hollows.Of course, we eventually find out that it’s all fake, a stage set by akio with anthy’s help, which in this context positions akio as a sort of false god.
Page 35, again on the world navel: “wherever a hero has been born, has wrought, or has passed back into the void, the place is marked and sanctified. (…) someone at this point discovered eternity. (…) the one who enters the temple compound and proceeds to the sanctuary is imitating the deed of the original hero. His aim is to rehearse the universal pattern as a means of evoking within himself the recollection of the life-centering, life-renewing form.” This one mostly caught my attention because of the word eternity, but then i thought of dios’s grave… Since his grave, the arena and akio’s planetarium are really one and the same, it could easily follow that anyone who enters it is seeking to emulate dios, or the prince archetype in abstract. This certainly applies to utena and akio, and perhaps other duelists as well to some extent.
OH WE GETTING TO THE TASTY PART NOW…… ANTHY TIME BITCHHH ITS THE MEETING WITH THE GODDESS CHAPTEROk immediately I’m struck by the phrase “the queen goddess”. I know akio says he thought of anthy as a goddess once, I’m trying to remember if anyone ever refers to her as a queen… she’s mostly seen in context of the princess-witch dichotomy but once you really get down to it it’s more complicated, like is the rose bride basically the epitome of the princess archetype? It does include hyperfemininity, victimhood, obedience, passivity and power that can be obtained by marrying her but which she cannot wield herself… but the rose bride role is also explicitly tied to the witch, since it’s anthy’s punishment for imprisoning dios… It’s also interesting how despised she is - the princess role is supposed to be respectable (especially if we connect the princess witch dichotomy to the Madonna whore complex) but anthy is constantly mistreated and degraded - which, yes, makes her more of a princess in Utena’s (and the viewer’s) eyes, but is also a direct result of her role as the rose bride. If the rose bride position is basically the dragon that the prince has to save the princess from then can the rose bride be synonymous with the princess?Wait I was originally going to talk about something else I think. Well anyway I guess the Ockham’s razor is that the narrative had to make sense somehow and couldn’t JUST be metaphors but. Idk man food for thought. Maybe the rose bride as a role is supposed to be a blend of the princess and witch traits, or maybe it’s meant to showcase how the two are just different sides of the same coin. Anyway I’m one sentence into this chapter and my bedtime is in 7 minutes
Campbell describes the two types of goddesses as representing the good mother - forever youthful, beautiful and kind - and the bad mother - split here into four types but generally cold and distant. I’m tempted to connect the two to the princess and the witch (or the Madonna and the whore) but Campbell explicitly connects the bad mother to Diana and emphasises her chastity, when sexuality is such a big part of both the witch and the whore… hmm
K it’s late so I’ll continue sometime else but I wanted to mention that this whole thing was a result of reading this fantastic essay on anthy and specifically the part about Campbell’s goddess
Page 97, still on the goddess: “woman, in the picture language of mythology, represents the totality of what can be known. The hero is the one who comes to know. As he progresses in the slow initiation which is life, the form of the goddess undergoes for him a series of transfigurations: she can never be greater than himself, though she can always promise more than he is yet capable of comprehending. She lures, she guides, she bids him burst his fetters. And if he can match her import, the two, the knower and the known, will be released for every limitation. Woman is the guide to the sublime acme of sensuous adventure. ” This is the passage quoted in the essay that inspired me… The part about transfigurations is painfully reminiscent of anthy for sure, but the “she can never be greater than himself” sounds more like utena to me, makes me think of that digibro quote about how romantic interests in self insert power fantasy shounen anime (either Sao or asterisk war in this case) are often supposed to be the second best warrior right after the number one hero because they’re a sort of status symbol but of course can’t undermine the hero’s ego. Similarly akio wants utena at her strongest and only wants her because she is the strongest but still wants her beneath him. Also the phrasing of “the knower and the known” is so telling…. Even if a woman is meant to signify great knowledge it’s still in a way that makes her something passive, an object for the hero to consume. This reminds me of the born sexy yesterday video where he remarks on how even if the female character is supposed to be impossibly wise it just means the male hero is the one who gets to “discover” her
Page 99, still on the meeting with the goddess: “and when the adventurer, in this context, is not a youth but a maid, she is the one who, by her qualities, her beauty, or her yearning, is fit to become the consort of an immortal. Then the heavenly husband descends to her and conducts her to his bed-whether she will or no. And if she has shunned him, the scales fall from her eyes; if she has sought him, her desire finds its peace” God, what a creepy and accurate way to portray utena and akios relationship. He sees her as worthy of becoming his bride, he rapes her, he almost has her serve herself to him on a golden platter until she decides to pick up the sword and fight him. He sees himself as her god.
desktop is really fucking this up depending on what device i rb on but alas. lets continue. surprisingly enough i don’t have much to say about the woman as temptress chapter in relation to anthy because now that i think about it, the men of ohtori don’t really see her as one? nanami does, and maybe kozue too, but anthy generally isn’t very proactive when it comes to romance or sex… I guess Miki would be the closest example, since she seems to consciously try and get his attention by playing the piano, but Miki is pretty oblivious to it, so.Trying to think of other characters who might fit that trope… Kozue does act pretty provocative both towards the random dude she flirted with and Miki, but their relationship is one I don’t have much of a grip on tbh. Really the tempting spotlight is pretty firmly on Touga and Akio in this show haha
reading the “atonement with the father” chapter and, like, it’s kind of annoying how much the male hero is the default in this book, with the female hero only an occasional mention, but it does remind me of anthy’s incredibly fucking disturbing line about how akio is “more like her father” since their parents are nowhere to be seen. i don’t really have anything profound to say, but it is pretty interesting that parents are such a non-entity in rgu, given how prominent the mother and father figures are in psychoanalysis and archetype theory. should akio be read as anthy’s father, acting as one in the absence of the real thing, the same way he acts as the chairman? i’m not super familiar with the electra complex theory, but if the resolution to the oedipus complex is letting go of the unhealthy attachment to to mother and reconciliation with the father, i guess the analogous resolution to the electra complex would be letting go of the father? which anthy, in this reading, does do… but then again in rgu it’s akio who rapes anthy and we see him rather than her initiating sex so i doubt the writers had uncritically reproducing freud’s theory in mind
nothing too insightful but in the chapter the magic flight campbell talks about a welsh myth about Caridwen and she seems like a perfect witch character
page 209, on freedom to live - campbell quotes the end of the grimm brothers’ little briar rose, but precedes it with “When the Prince of Eternity kissed the Princess of the World, her resistance was allayed”. the phrasing of course caught my eye, but i’d never really seen anyone go in depth about the similarity between sleeping beauty and utena’s childhood story… the shadow-faced version that sometimes appears at the start of an episode omits utena sleeping in her coffin, but includes the prince kissing her tears away - something that did happen in the ep34 flashback, but was not what made baby utena get up. i suppose i don’t have anything terribly profound to say about the relationship between rgu and sleeping beauty, aside from some similar elements - the sleeping princess kissed awake by her prince, the princess in the grimms’ version being called briar rose, and the unspecified thorny bushes possibly being roses as well… and the witch, of course
page 259, matrix of destiny. “The universal goddess makes her appearance to men under a multitude of guises; for the effects of creation are multitudinous, complex and of mutually contradictory kind when experienced from the viewpoint of the created world. the mother of life is at the same time the mother of death; she is masked in the ugly demonesses of famine and disease. The Sumero-Babylonian astral mythology identified the aspects of the cosmic female with the phases of the planet Venus. As morning star she was the virgin, as evening star the harlot, as lady of the night sky the consort of the moon; and when extinguished under the blaze of the sun she was the hag of hell” campbell continues to insist on tying every female character back to the mother, which doesn’t really seem to be very relevant with anthy, but i’m digging the various aspects of the woman. seems interesting to me how this is at least the second time he’s characterised the woman in myths as someone constantly changing roles and aspects (first time was on page 97) whereas i don’t really see this tendency in male characters. women seem to need to constantly adapt, shift their identity to suit the male character, who is allowed to remain stably himself. also fascinating are the particular archetypes campbell brings up - the virgin (princess), the harlot (rose bride? the position does seem to be given respect on some level, but in practice she doesn’t get much... add to that the design elements tying her to the “scarlet woman”, and possibly even the playboy bunnies, and her duties do seem to include sleeping with every Engaged if the movie is anything to go by), consort of the moon (we all know what akio and anthy’s connection to the moon...) and the hag of hell (witch)
this has very little to do with rgu but reading the Mwuetsi/Massassi myth kinda makes me sick lol!!! not only does it include the first man being given a woman but he symbolically impregnates her with some oil from a horn (subtle, also done without her knowledge since she was asleep) and she gives birth to all the plants on earth. ew
UH OK HE THEN GOES ON TO SLEEP WITH HIS DAUGHTERS.... AND THEN TO RAPE HIS NEXT WIFE.......... MR CAMPBELL CAN I GO like i know it’s old myths so it’s all symbolic or whatever but that doesn’t make it any easier to read lol
page 296, an offhand comment of “The characteristic adventure of the first [type of hero] is the winning of the bride - the bride is life” and my brain automatically supplied “life... eternity... that which shines... the power of miracles... the power to revolutionise the world” LMAO
