#having characters give sora a bit of push back of times is a lot more interesting than blindly following him

Do you ever think about the fact that Terra technically has a little bit of responsibility to take for what happened to Riku in KH1? Cause I do.
Like I’m not saying that Terra is terrible or that he’s completely to blame, because he’s not. I love Terra as a character. He’s great! However I am saying that one of the many mistakes Terra made in BBS was bequeathing his Keyblade to Riku the way he did.
And I think Aqua knew it too.
Maybe I’m stating the obvious here, but something that becomes pretty apparent to me from that scene is that Terra didn’t actually think about the logistics of giving his keyblade to a seven year old kid. Nor did he really think of the responsibility that placed on him, to teach Riku how to be a keyblade barer.
When Terra helps Riku make the oath, he doesn’t really explain the weight of it to Riku, and quite honestly even if he had, Riku was still only seven. Yes okay, he was a seven year old who thought protecting his best friend was the most important thing, but he’s still only seven. Terra could t really expect Riku to comprehend what taking on the role of a keyblade barer meant, especially since Riku didn’t even know what one was!
And then Terra leaves, and it’s not made clear whether or not he plans to come back and teach Riku. He leaves this kid to simply figure this stuff out by himself, when Riku doesn’t even know where to start.
By comparison Aqua makes a purposeful decision not to bequeath her keyblade to sora. And I think that was less to do with the fact that Terra had already given one of the boys a keyblade, and more to do with the fact that she recognised that unless she was sure she could come back, then giving the keyblade to sora would be a bad idea. Because she couldn’t come back to teach him the way Terra, Ven and herself were taught. She knew better then to place that pressure on a child, to simply do it themselves.
Personally I believe that part of Riku’s desperation to be the best. To be the strongest, the smartest, the fastest, the wisest; came from an expectation that Terra placed on him to “have the strength to protect what matters”.
Riku had no idea that what he needed was a teacher. He had no idea the amount of training and practice it took to become a keyblade master, because he didn’t have a teacher! Because Terra left, and he never came back.
And I know that’s not Terras fault. But part of the reason I think that it was such a bad idea to gift Riku the keyblade, was because -technically- Terra didn’t have the right. He wasn’t a master, he failed his exam and was made to go away and re-evaluate his relationship to the darkness.
To me thats the first sign that you shouldn’t be handing out keyblades to kids on beaches.
Riku had the same priorities as Terra, and that was both of their downfalls in the end. It’s becoming Sora’s weakness in real time as we play the games. The difference is, Riku became a master because -unlike Terra he stared long and hard at his relationship to the darkness and learned that it wasn’t about using it to protect his friends, it was about allowing it to consume him.
But Riku could only learn that because he was pushed to the brink of destruction, that was caused by his fear of failing to become a Keyblade barer.
And who placed that weight of expectation on him?
Terra.
I dunno man, I have a lot of thinking thoughts. Most of them incoherent.
Tell me what you think???

hello again wanted to do a follow up to the last request specifically for kanade what if s/o was targeted as the motive and the goal was to kill him because how how much of a threat he was 😜
Thank you for requesting!! I love your prompts ughh. Anyways this was fun to write, and I had recently gotten very ill. So if I haven’t been posting it’s because of that. And it sucks, because I still have to go to school (high school is the worst.)
i just started my rewatch of DRA, so now my characters at least for DRA will get better.
WARNING: SPOILERS, HINTED DEATH, ANGST, KANADE, FUCKING MIKADO
~ Mod Haruhiko ✈️
🎵 You, Sora, Kokoro and Kanade were an unstoppable force. The four of you would bounce off each other in the trials, and although it was mostly you, Kanade and Kokoro giving Sora advice and pushing her reasoning along. It still worked great.
🎵 Kanade was with you when it had happened, the ringing body discovery announcement that had become all to familiar despite only being played once before. The two of you rushed to Kokoro’s dorm in fear of what had just happened.
🎵 There was already a murder in there surrounding the freezer over lifeless body of Kokoro Mitsume. And you swore that you could hear Kanade whisper underneath her breath.
=
The room was crisp, frost was starting to coat the furniture, and everyone seemed to be standing frozen over Kokoro Mitsume’s now dead corpse.
The faint smell of metallic blood hovered in the air. Maybe it was because of the time to cope but now, seeing a corpse after almost ten days was terrifying.
“Ugh, and then there was three.” Kanade mumbled, and you swore that you heard something from her but she gave you her innocent look when she noticed your frightened gaze.
Breaking the silence of the ice cold room you spoke, a slight tremble in your voice; “What did you say, I’m sorry I didn’t hear you.”
Kanade wrapped her arms around herself, many eyes turning to stare at the two of you.
“Oh, I just asked for your jacket.” Kanade responded innocently.
=
🎵 Throughout the investigation, Kanade would stay with you. And she would investigate the body for you as Yoruko would flip out at any man who came near Kokoro’s body. Understandably so, but Kanade was plotting just a little bit of revenge on Yoruko for daring to yell at you.
🎵 Maybe.. Yoruko could be the person she frames for the double murder…
🎵 That’s besides the point at the moment though, as she had to physically restrain you from attacking Syobai.
=
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU KNOW WHO THE CULPRIT IS.” You screamed at Syobai, typically it took a lot to drive you far past your breaking point but in this high pressure situation and Syobai potentially putting all of your lives at risk withholding information.
“It means I know who the culprit is.” He shrugged, him acting all nonchalantly about all of your lives was starting to really  get on your nerves.
So obviously you did the most reasonable thing I person full of petty anger could, position yourself in a way that would definitely lead to a fight.
Kanade was talking with Hibiki, and Syobai looked slightly impressed? “Mr. S/O don’t you remember it’s against school rules for a student to lay a hand on another without murderous intent?”
Mikado’s annoying voice rang out into the room guarding Kanade’s attention who had just pulled you back and away from Syobai.
=
🎵 Despite that little hiccup the trial went fairly well. Kanade, you and Sora had solved the mystery with the help of Syobai. So maybe there was some hope left for you after all.
🎵 The sailing to the next island took a little while and in that time you liked to teach Kanade some more defense. As paranoia that you’d loose her was at an all time high. But when resting you liked to read to one another, with Hibiki sometimes tagging along.
🎵 But the night after arriving and exploring Satsuki Land, Mikado calls all of you down to a jade tiled room on the Monocruise.
=
“Monocrow, you may do the honors.” Mikado announced to the group with a tone of pride.
“Yes, Mr. Sannoji. So, we are pleased to announce a brand new motive for our killing school trip.” Monocrow announced in his typical handsome voice— or as handsome as a bird could get.
With his announcement you swore you could hear Yuki mumbled something about how why would we need a motive when the voids would kill anyways. But Sora quickly shut him down with a hand to his shoulder.
Kanade looked a little bit anxious herself as she hugged Hibiki who was the one who was really nervous in this situation. You wished that you could do something to help everyone.
“You can no longer kill just anyone, it now has to do our resident (martial artist) himself, Mr.S/O!” Monocrow announced, Mikado beside him looked full of energy. That bastard.
Looks from the others rang in a variety of different emotions. Mikado looked joyful, excited to get rid of you. Iroha looked at you in surprise, checking between both you and Mikado. Nikei looked at you with some sort of pity, same was true for Yuki, Sora and Yoruko. And Setsuka put her hand on your back telling it that it was going to be okay, Shinji saying similar things without the physical touch. Hibiki looked scared, you brought her sister so much peace, she was scared to see what would happen to loose you.
And Kanade? She was pissed.
=
🎵 Being fully aware of not being allowed to lay a hand on Mikado or Monocrow. She opted for lashing out. Kanade started screaming and demanding an answer of why from Mikado.
🎵 Soon she came to terms with the fact that she wouldn’t ever get what she wanted and turned to you and pulled you close. Shoving both Setsuka and Shinji, who were both trying to comfort you away. They couldn’t be trusted after all.
🎵 Kanade would immediately be with you every day, always staying by your side. Well at least for a day. She disappeared one morning before breakfast, before heading down to eat with you.
🎵 She was all over you that morning. Telling you how much she loved you. Like she finally came to terms with the fact that you were going to die, whether she tried to stop it or not. You had already accepted it too.
🎵 This time, she made sure to see Iroha drink the Americano. Then, Kanade would tell you about how Hibiki loved to swim, and she likes the feel of the water when she isn’t feeling well mentally. Kanade suggested that maybe it would help you too.
🎵 Then all she had to do was tell Hibiki to come down to the pool as well.

Magic Lantern - Epilogue 2
Location: Magic Lantern Stage Characters: Sora, Natsume & Tsumugi
Tumblr media
Sora: Sora won’t overdo it. Once Sora finishes what Sora wants to do, Sora will sit still and do what he’s told…
Please. Please let Sora do something a little reckless.
Natsume: HmM… As someone who normally doesn’t listen to what other people say and insists on my own way, I don’t think I can say no to that requeST.
But, really, don’t push yourseLF. Senpai and I will do our best to make things easier for yOU.
Tsumugi: Yes. I don’t know what you’re intending on doing, Sora-kun…
But we’ll distract the audience so that they don’t notice anything off about you.
I’m used to doing that for Eichi-kun.
Natsume: Stop bringing up that name every chance you gET – You’re a part of “Switch” right now, nOT “fine”.
Tsumugi: Yes. But you can’t completely erase your past, so I can’t pretend it never happened.
We stand on the highest layer of our past and live with the nutrition from all the things we’ve consumed to this day, after all.
Natsume: You’ll trip if you keep looking so far into the distanCE. Well, putting that asiDE – Sora, if you’re going to do something, then make it quiCK.
Do it before I give in to my worries and carry you to the doctor by forCE.
Tsumugi: Yes. Please do. No one has the right to stop you, Sora-kun.
Of course, if I decide that it’s something you shouldn’t do, then I’ll stop you though. Even if it’ll make you hate me, I’ll still stop you.
Sora: Okay. But don’t worry~ It’ll be quick.
“♪~♪~♪”
“All our fans here and all the people around the world! Good morning, hello and good evening! Sora Harukawa from ‘Switch’ is happy to meet all of you!”
Natsume: *Whispers* …Sora, you just wanted to say hello to everyoNE?
Sora: Yes. But that’s not all… Sora has something he has to do properly as a magician and as an idol.
Just like Master~ and Senpai.
“HaHa~♪ Sora is here today to show everyone what Sora cherishes and loves!”
“First, it’s a colourful light from this magic lantern! It’s beautiful, right~?”
“This magic lantern was originally something buried in the earth that someone threw away and wanted to forget about…”
“Sora, Master~ and Senpai fixed it and it’s working again! The magic lantern must be happy too~ It’s happy to see everyone!”
“When we look at a shining light, that light also looks straight back at us! We look at and illuminate each other while sharing our love!”
“Sora is also happy to see he’s become a part of that ‘happy cycle’!”
“Look, can you see? You don’t have to make sure you definitely see it, but when you do, you might feel like you’ve gained something.”
“Sora and ‘Switch’ are those sorts of idols!”
“The one who supported that ‘Switch’ is our experienced upperclassman – Tsumugi Aoba!”
“He took the initiative to do all the work no one else wanted to do and is the kindest person in the world!”
Tsumugi: Ohh…? I-It feels a bit embarrassing to hear Sora-kun call me by my full name.
Sora: “HiHi~♪ And the one who stands on top of the foundation that Senpai prepared is my master who guides us in the right direction… Natsume Sakasaki!”
“He’s ‘Switch’s’ leader and is always a star of hope for Sora and Senpai!”
Natsume: A star of hoPE? That would be yOU, Sora.
Sora: “Sora doesn’t know if that’s the right expression! Sora isn’t good at talking and isn’t used to it!”
“But! Master~ has always showed Sora an example! He holds Sora’s hand and guides Sora in the direction that’s full of light~♪”
“Sora is inexperienced and doesn’t know a lot of things, so Sora might end up tripping from time to time! But when that happens, Senpai will hold Sora up!”
“Sora wants to be a connection between them! Sora wants to walk forever and ever with our hands connected!”
Tumblr media
Sora: “We don’t have to walk quickly! We can enjoy the scenery more that way and we can pick up the things we dropped right away! Right, Master~? Senpai?”
“Senpai has picked up the ‘past’ that has piled up and takes care of it!”
“Master~ comes up with clever things and always searches for a brighter ‘future’!”
“Sora is smiling happily in the middle between them right now!”
“Sora will show off the ‘current Switch’ at this ‘Magic Lantern Fest’ concert! Sora will do so today, tomorrow and forever in the future!”
“Sora will hold hands with Master~ and Senpai and introduce the sparky things that Senpai finds at ES and Master~ finds at Yumenosaki!”
“Sora will show off the things he loves most a lot!”
“That’s what ‘Switch’ will do in the future!”
Natsume: Is this a campaign speeCH? Although, I suppose it is something a Yumenosaki idol would dO…
Tsumugi: It really feels like something straight out of a company meeting, doesn’t it? Well, that is necessary when you start working.
Sora: “HuHu~♪ Anyway, what Sora wants to say is you don’t have to worry!“
“It seems things have been feeling somewhat restless here and there ever since ES was established?”
“At the very least, Sora and ‘Switch’ will always perform and show you!”
“We’ll show you the sparkly things that were hard to see because of it and put on super fun idol performances for you!”
“We’ll pierce through the cloudy skies and shine a gentle and happy light onto you!”
“Rather than showing you the things you don't want to see, we’ll show you the things that aren’t visible to you!”
“There are still a lot of beautiful and precious things in the world that you haven’t noticed yet!”
“Let’s share those things and tell each other how nice they are!”
“That’s all Sora wanted to say! No – that’s what Sora wanted to say all this time…!”
“♪~♪~♪”

i have SO MANY trinity trio Feelings!!! (possibly because donald and goofy absolutely carried me through kh1 but i digress) honestly i'm SO glad kingdom hearts lets its main disney characters be... well, interesting? when i first got into the series i thought they'd be bland but they have flaws! they have character arcs! donald and goofy go from reluctant companions to sora's big brother figures, donald especially in kh1, and their appearances in the country of musketeers contrasting their present day personalities is such a nice touch. (shout out to minnie going from being helpless even without being restrained or imprisoned, to blasting pete in the face with magic the second he's distracted by lea)
i also like that they do end up hurting sora even after kh1, noticeable in kh3 especially. obviously they don't mean it, they're genuinely just teasing him, or trying to cheer him up... but sora's hurt by it anyways, although they don't notice, and he doesn't say anything... it's the miscommunication for me. idk "sometimes we hurt people we care about without meaning to" is an important message imo. id love for them to address this in the future considering they showed us sora's breakdown in kh3
dude you're so right though !! i'm super happy that the disney cast feels as important as the KH cast but not overly so- like while they're supporting roles, you can't look over their importance and they're just as enjoyable to watch as the rest of the characters

do you have more thoughts on keyblade fighting that you need to put somewhere, because i have two hands ready to catch Should The Need Arise
anon: hey I heard you mention you’d analysed the combat styles in KH and what you said in the tags was already alluding to really neat stuff, but I for one would love to hear more of what you came up with!! so if you ever wanted to share any of your analysis then the floor is yours
aHAH, MY EXCUSE!!
Okay, so first some words on “standardized wielding styles”. These are styles shared by Terra, Aqua, Vanitas, Riku, and Xehanort and every other scala and daybreak kid. I will make the argument that the red style is the fanciest standard style, while the purple is seen often to make it easier on the little chibi sprites. BUT, I cannot discredit Eraqus, who uses the purple variant in bbs, nor can I discredit half of the Foretellers (Gula and Ava, at least, use this. Invi and Aced use the first type). So, two standard styles. For simplicity, let’s say one for primary offense, one for primary defense. The standard offensive style really wasn’t popular before Scala-era society.
check this difference out, specifically between ava invi and gula:
Tumblr media
then between eraqus, hermod, and xehanort, and eraqus and terra.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two were likely popularized and standardized for education in Scala ad Caelum for their predominant lack of obvious weak spots.
After this, we have unique styles. Those include Sora Kairi and Xion’s (similar to standard defense, but more mobile at the expense of form — Kairi takes after Sora but less confident, she hasn’t been hit that heavily yet), Ven’s (backhand, heavy range and mobility), Roxas’ (modified for two keyblades, but takes after Sora), and Axel’s (taught himself, comfortable with chakrams).
So! Let’s go.
.
Standard (offensive)
All styles have sub-variations, of a sense. Different wielders can choose where their keyblade points, and how they hold it exactly, based on what makes them most comfortable. Terra and Aqua point theirs downward, while Vanitas and Riku hold theirs above their head. What is recognizeable to this style is a hand for the sword, and a hand for guarding/blocking/items/magic.
Tumblr media
It’s incredibly efficient. With only one hand on the weapon, you not only free up a hand for other things, but increase your range of movement with said weapon. Test it out yourself! The keyblade hand is always your dominant hand, held behind you for increased power when attacking (since you lose a significant amount of it by choosing not to grip with both hands). This style also decreases the speed of the defense you have, but with that increased mobility and swing power, along with a hand free to brace against the keyblade (defense strength up!), it makes up for it. Many people who use this also have strong barrier spells — both a testament to their preference for coverage and an acknowledgement that any directional block will take a little longer and be weaker if they try it with one hand.
The pointy end, though. What difference does it actually make, the height it’s at?
I think it’s half a matter of attack style preference and half intention. Riku, Vanitas, and Xehanort stab quite a bit. Aqua and Terra slice more. Not that they don’t do both, but it’s the first instinct. Aqua and Terra are also likely taught to hold their keyblade neutrally, in a safe position, until someone starts attacking. It’s polite! Eraqus also holds his one-handed, neutrally, until he gets into position. Riku and Vanitas learned to fight assuming everyone was out to fight them. Invi and Aced may like this style because of range (i hc she’s blind and strikes very very quickly, and he’s already very powerful with just the one arm and wants better motion).
and on character specifics: Terra often switches to two-handed, to copy his dad and add extra power to his hits without always sacrificing the empty hand. Vanitas likely was forced to relearn how to fight, as instead of solely being trained to be better at withstanding, he was constantly being made to better his own attacks. The moves Xehanort uses would best be replicated in the same style. Vanitas is wild for holding the massive spiky x-blade like that.
Now, what‘s good on this style does not correlate to what’s bad in the other. The two standard styles simply have different ways of dealing with each con they create or taking advantage of each pro.
(Here’s an interesting side note — Gula uses standard defensive, but in this instance, swaps. One hand… likely to display confidence! Wrong move, but hey. He got cocky. He’s also doing it wrong, and swaps back to two-handed to take Aced’s attack.)
Tumblr media
.
Standard (defensive)
Tumblr media
The main detriment of this style is the lack of ease of long range movement. Hold a wrapping paper tube out in front of you with both hands, then run. It goes to the side, or tucks in to your stomach, right? Dodge. Your legs will get in the way unless you know where to move that sword. It requires, interestingly, a little more discipline. You’d think Aqua would like that, but no, she wants movement and practicality, and she loves magic, and remember that you must take a hand off this style to grab a potion. You’d think young Eraqus wouldn’t, but remember that he’s a fancy royal lad.
The main draw, though, is tankiness, readiness, and power. You don’t need to move as much if nothing dares hit you! Ava and Gula might be attracted to this style because they’re not as physically strong, but want protection in close-quarters fighting. Using this style when your muscles aren’t as big but you still want to Hit Things Good, or when you want to be a boy you can’t knock over with a pail of water (horse stance rules), is probably solid advice.
Traditionally, this is a lot less like fencing, and a lot more like a samurai sword or kendo. Your blade is held in front of you, giving you very easy access to blocks and frontal attack/defense. In losing some twirly spinniness, you gain power and minimize your opponent’s ability to parry and block.
Tumblr media
you gotta dodge master Eraqus so mcuh
All styles will swap between one and two hands for different moves. Eraqus, notably, swaps to a stance very similar to Xehanort when channeling a metric ton of magic.
Both of these styles require a degree of upper body/core strength, as does all swordfighting. I would be interested to see someone whose keyblade style relies on leg strength.
.
Sora, Xion, and Kairi
please look at the difference between the foretellers’ or eraqus’ two-handed grip and Sora’s. Do this with your shoulders and a top-heavy object.
They’re both in a hard stance, but hon. What are you, a gremlin? Anyways, a traditionally taught master would have… better form, even if it’s harder to learn at first. It’s habitual. Sora nearly crouches, and holds his keyblade back-pointed with two hands, which makes it easier for him to dodge roll, push off his feet quickly, and pull off those spinning combos he loves. It‘s really gonna hurt his muscles, in the future, though, since he’s doing a squat for like…. hours. Pulling on those shoulderblades and neck. Xion, too. Replicas had better have correct muscle dynamics. Kairi is brand new, so… maybe Aqua can teach her how to hold a sword so it doesnt hurt you.
Okay, now look at the grip itself. Held in front versus held to the side-back. They’re really attempting to combine both standard styles subconsciously, giving themselves more attack power while really wanting to keep that hard defensive parry, wanting to prevent all attacks to the front while also wanting mobility. It’s working for them really well, they fight like an anime character, and manage to get the best of both, with a minor sacrifice of length range that they don’t care about. We’re flexible and full of magic, baby! Holding the blade like this makes it pretty easy to let go with one hand without sacrificing that crouched defense position.
Now, Sora, specifically, is very adaptive. He’s had two keyblades, claws, guns, yo-yos, and a giant shield, to name a couple. He retains a bit of that alert crouch no matter where he goes, but Sora knows how he wants to attack and how to balance that with the most effective way to use his current weapon. He’s a smart kid! Sora has the most ridiculous shotlocks, which are also probably due to not always wanting to go standard for it. He also prefers to keep his focus on the enemy, which is evident in his reprisals and lack of very many effective “escape” moves.
Xion is very similar to Sora, but she does have some moves that are all movement. She switches to one handed for strikes a lot — using two for defending, one for smacking. In her data battle I’d swear some of those heavy hits are claymore-like. But anyways, since we’re magic, Xion cares not for the laws of exhaustion, and will ping about as a ball of light everywhere. Short range? Up in your business. Mid-range? In your business with one hand. Long range? Throws a boomerang. Hit her? No you dont. Ball of light. She’s above you and wants to bash your head in. (Vanitas also does this! A lot. It’s an easy way to catch someone off-guard. I’ll argue that the soras are very tough and strong, but not tanky. they want to avoid being hit a lot)
Another interesting note about Kairi. I say “unconfident” not because she doesn’t hit hard, but because her stance is also often tilted back, ready to dodge. It’s two handed, but almost all her moves are one. She does love spinning and throwing the thing! It looks like she’s been taking notes from the wielders she knows. It would be easy to teach her a standard style, I think. See here, she lets go on the strike, and by trying to do both, actually ends up with an advantage (being confusing) and disadvantage (losing both the power of two handed and versatility of one handed).
Tumblr media
A counter to Sora and Xion is difficult to pin down. Time? Probably. Lack of heating pads. Something that takes all their attention is about the only way to get a sneak attack in, and then you have to hit hard. A counter to Kairi would be anyone who can knock her off balance. She needs a sturdier stance. .
Roxas
Roxas is interesting. He takes after Sora for the one blade. Wielding two, however, nets him a totally different way of fighting. Roxas’ clavicle muscles n… deltoids and stuff must be Ironclad. Also, two handed means you are very fast and sharp all the time. He has the advantage of standard defense (horse stance), and the advantage of offense (range of one sword, but twice).
Roxas generally attacks in two ways — simultaneous hits, and follow-up hits. Either he hits with both at once, or hits hard with the first one, and adds the second one as a bonus smack. He can attack by hitting in opposite directions with the two, like a drum, but that will be a little awkward and leave him prone to being tangled. That established, the follow-up hit method means he spins a bunch. As do we all.
Roxas gets a little complicated because we are not in the real world. We have magic and turning into light and physics that let you become a circular saw. So, typically, disadvantages would include: being unable to let go of a weapon to grab something or use an item, having just a very big silhouette to attack on, having difficulty with close-range attacks because Oathkeeper and Oblivion are kinda long, and convenience. Roxas gets to dodge #1 (keyblades can be unsummoned) and #4 (keyblades can be unsummoned). Speaking of dodging, he also gets to skirt the difficulty of dodging and rolling with two swords because he turns into a beam of light. But he can’t dodge how difficult it is to use two swords effectively — he needs to concentrate on fighting, and nothing else, or he risks messing up. He has to be very, very coordinated, and undistracted. Luckily he’s pretty good at making his opponents shut up, most of the time. Blocking is another thing — theoretically his blocks could be strong, but Roxas has no real brace: crossing your blades and taking a hefty stab might smack one of them back into your face. He mostly uses reversals and dodges, because of this.
The takeaway to this is Roxas is built for speed and power, and he is very strong. He’s a mid- to far- range fighter who if you’re not careful can snap you in half if you’re too close (be SO careful of that cross blade scissor).
A perfect counter to Roxas would be a tank that can grapple, and also be very distracting. If you can take hits, be talkative, and get close enough to stop his blades, you have a chance.
.
Ventus
This is a bizarre choice, my guy, but I get it.
Backhanded weapons are very impractical for a lot of... attacking, mainly in mid-range combat, and Ven likes to either fight very close or throw the keyblade like a boomerang (and hey, backhand gives it a good whip for throwing). His attacks aren’t meant to one hit KO, but they do come with a bit of power to them, especially on the backslash. Like holding a knife for gouging. It’s for very close defense — pretty good when Wayward Wind and Missing Ache have hooks.
Backhand also, while retaining that empty hand for potions and guarding, gives you an extreme coverage boost. By which I mean Ven’s sword hand now has a nearly 270 degree sweep of “I see you, don’t touch me”, very quickly, based on just flicking his wrist. It sacrifices a ton of strength/sturdiness, but you don’t need that if you’re dodging. You also don’t really need to block, which is slower, but relatively sturdy when Ven does it, as he blocks with mostly the chunky hilt between crossed arms. He sacrifices (again) a bit of strength for coverage — an attack would hurt his arms, not his chest, if he were hit head-on.
Tumblr media
His attacks often have him flip the blade around in his hand, too. Quick swaps between standard moves and backhand ones. Basically, Ventus is built for moving, protecting himself, and quick attacks that wear down the enemy, not outclass it. Likely because he’s good at fighting, but everyone he’s fought hits harder than he can! It doesn’t matter how he holds it, getting hit will hurt. So he just. Doesn’t. He’s not a buff little guy — but he is a persistent one. Ven very likely made this up on his own, in Daybreak, and it was too hard to fix his whole style, but it was enough to correct most of his form so he doesn’t hurt himself too much. He is going to have to really stretch that shoulder and wrist (maybe get a brace), though. At least his neck is ok. … not sure about his knees tho dang boy that crouch
A perfect counter to Ven would be someone big and fast, who hits hard mid-range. He’s already been sparring with Terra, though, so when in doubt, try scruffing him?
.
Axel
Theres not a ton to say about him — he‘s not a swordfighter. He uses his keyblade like it’s a frisbee. Because that’s what he’s used to! His neutral is behind his back on his shoulder, which is terrible for readiness, but okay for chucking the thing. It’s good it has a sort of… ripstik like… boomerang quality.
Axel’s fighting style is completely made up, like most of the self-taught wielders’. His strengths lie in some of the benefits of standard offensive style (one-handed), and some of the same coverage stuff as Ven, having a cocked wrist most of the time so no one can sneak up around him without risking getting whacked very quickly, and having an interesting range due to the pointy end being basically on a spinny swivel wherever his hand moves. He’s not going to be good at close-range and he knows it — his attacks are mostly distance. And the guy has ZERO defense, combined with zero coverage when idle, so it’s for the better.
Distance-wise, though, he rocks. Treating the blade like it’s a flaming throwing weapon means his idle is actually great for sudden flick-tossing and attention-guiding for sneakier attacks, and his stance itself (…nonexistent) serves a different purpose: bait. Basically a big "come hit me". Fun, when you have a lot of fire magic and two friends who are beasts and love to take advantage of a distracted enemy — distance on the blade, proximity on the burning.
A perfect counter to Axel would be someone pinging around very close <—> very far and circling him incessantly. Like, data Xion could wreck him, as he has to wait for the boomerang to come back -- he no longer has two spinny wheels. Also someone with water magic.
.
SO! In conclusion! Having a teacher who teaches you correct sword usage rather than instinct may detract from overspecific styles that benefit you most but leave weak spots, but your muscles and your oversights will thank you. Everyone is glad we have the power of the Mouse and anime on our side.
Keep in mind again that I have done cursory research, and have had minimal actual sword instruction, I am not an expert and this is all for fun anyways :]

Now that I’ve completely caught up on KH (and even played most of em), I think I can finally give my reviews on each game in the series! Then I’ll rank em at the end!
I only got into the series about a year ago and I love it to bits! So this will be from the perspective of someone who never rlly played it as a kid nor had heard of it until recently. ^^ however it should be known that knew the the entire KH plot line before playing them outright.
KH1 - The only KH game I’d played before I truly knew what it was. I remember seeing it and playing a bit of it in elementary school cuz some friends had it, but I never knew what was going on so I never finished any of the worlds ^^’.
It’s definitely the hardest game out of the bunch. Not because of anything it does but simply it’s just so barebones in terms of battling compared to future games in the series. That’s not to say it’s not fun tho: probs my favorite time grinding for synthesis items. I’d say this game is my fav grinding experience. Plus Cure not taking up ur entire health bar helps KSNDKSNSKS
As for story: A great way to start off the series. You get introduced to your main guy, your little meow wow: Sora. And then there’s his jealous gay best friend, Riku. And probably my fav version of so far and pretty snarky girl best friend, Kairi. This game is pretty good on its own in terms of story but it really shines in how it influences all the other games in the series. I’d say playing through all the other games made me appreciate it so much more as well as create a baseline of “innocence” for the Destiny Trio to fall back on and acknowledge. And DI is just a beautiful place in general, rlly want to explore it freely someday.
My only real gripe is that Ansem SOD, tho mentioned throughout the game, is not overly built upon as a final antagonist. Maleficent, I feel, is much more satisfying to finally fight and defeat because she’s been messing with Riku’s head and planting Heartless everywhere with her other bad guy friends. Ansem SOD’s final fight is on Destiny Islands tho so he gets some bonus points.
KH Re:CoM - Truthfully, I haven’t finished it but I’m at Marluxia’s final fight, and I feel like I can talk about the gameplay in general.
The card system is a huge obstacle to get around at first, but once you get the hang of it it’s actually quite enjoyable! Finding out new ways to defeat ur enemies almost instantaneously plus needing to solve ur way out of bosses is so much fun! I could probably spend my days just grinding in that game
Story wise, the push off for this wild story as a whole. It’s this eye opening “oh shit this was going on the background of KH1 the whole time???” Kind of feel. Naminé and Repliku are great. You get introduced to Axel, Larxene, Marluxia, Vexen, Zexion, and Lexaeus… only for all except for Axel to parish, and Sora to forget he ever did that in the first place skdbdjdbs
Riku’s character arc also starts here, and his and Mickey’s friendship is rlly sweet. And it rlly shows that Sora’s opinion of Riku is rlly important to Riku. It’s just all rlly insightful to what exactly started KH1 and everything else.
I probably sound like everyone else when I say that the only thing holding this game back is the vastly different gameplay. I think I’d love to see someone recreate CoM but as a normal KH game
KH2 - The longest one. Only because like, you have to go through each and every world twice (sometimes 3 times) over, and it has the largest amount of any worlds in any KH game. Grinded to level 99 and have barely attempted the super bosses ;0; Also, Lingering Will’s Portal never showed up so I have to beat the game again >:/
Gameplay’s pretty fun! It’s your normal KH almost button-mash style. The gummiship is a lot of fun too, but still more tedious than anything. The infamous Drive forms make their appearance, and they’re pretty swell. My fav probs ended up being Limit and Anti form, but Anti form is random so ;-;. He hang by him foot I don’t know how you couldn’t not love him. Easiest time getting ultima weapon here.
A great villain cast. All of them have such interesting personalities (especially once I got to Days) and designs. They make you wonder who and what they are. Why they’re doing all of this. Honestly, I can’t pick a favorite. This game does a surprisingly good job at letting you kinda get to know each Org person ur fighting before you defeat them. It’s wild.
Holy shit Roxas. Nomura just hands you this wonderful lad before he kills him 2 hours later. It’s same with Axel (if you hadn’t experienced CoM before this). Dude is just trying to get his adopted son back, but he eventually realizes there’s no point and sacrifices himself to save Sora. It’s pretty touching (especially, again, after Days). The game is rlly the one that gets you feeling. Riku’s being a dumb-dumb through out this game, but he’s still a wise ass and it’s pretty great. Kairi, uh, Kairi’s pretty cool in the manga. I feel like neither explain when and how Naminè merged back with Kairi before they shake hands at the end of the game.
My gripes. I was told by a lot of people that this was the best KH game, but I’ll have to disagree. The way I would explain this game is just, tedious. There’s practically nothing happening inbetween Sora waking up and major plot point areas. You’re forced to got through almost every world twice. Leveling up drive forms gets specific and almost annoying (unless you know a glitch to get around the form level part. Which I had to look up). Even with this story, I’m just supposed to accept that Roxas and Naminè can never be their own people again? Like, I get that it’s supposed to be bittersweet but it’s played so oddly. I dunno, I can’t rlly explain it.
I know some peeps have said that the games stopped being good after KH2/Days and should have stopped, but I’ll have to wholeheartedly disagree. Though it has its satisfying moments, I don’t think I would have enjoyed the series as much as I did if it just, stopped there. This is probably my least favorite entry.
348/2 Days - I didn’t play it but I watched someone play it AND I watched the cutscenes.
The Tetris system seems fun! I do have a DS so I hope to play it some day. I will say, when Nomura and friends have to make the gameplay different to work on a different console, they rlly make it work. I’ll be more in-depth on this when we get to BBS. Also I love that each character has joke weapons. Amazing.
The story alone makes me wonder why CoM was remade but not Days. I would have KILLED to see Lexaeus back hand Roxas or the “Roxas, that’s a stick” line fully animated. It’s a playable tragedy where no-one wins in the end. Xion is forgotten. Roxas loses his memories of the past year. And Axel loses both of the kids he cared about sm. The lights of his life while in the Org. It rlly makes Axel’s actions all that more heartbreaking in KH2. But, I do not recommend doing Days before KH2 as Days spoils some plot points in KH2.
Again, I would love to actually play it someday. So I don’t have much gripes. Maybe I’ll update this more when I finally do.
KH: BBS - My favorite. Also the first one I actually saw someone play. You play as 3 different characters with 3 different play styles and it forces you to compensate. And it has the melding system. I will get to the melding system.
Story is one of my favs and introduces a whole new trio: Some parents and their adopted son LMAO. Plus you have old man Xehanort and Eraqus and the Unversed (I want a flood plush so BAD), and a new addition to the Heart Hotel: Vanitas. He’s such a little gremlin but also a blast to fight. Especially as Aqua. His attitude kinda reminds me of Larxene, and he’s a breath of fresh air in terms of personality. He bounces off the optimism of the protags rlly well. Love him <3
This is probably my fav trio? They are, the best. We have girlboss Aqua and her himbo husband Terra. And the saddest boy to ever live, Ventus. I’d kill for all of them. And like, it has baby Destiny Trio and young Saixel like, how much more could u want???
The gameplay is the best out of the bunch. I love the melding system. I love having the command deck. Shotlocks??? Stupendous. I played this one on Critical first, so I’m not sure how much I can talk about in terms of difficulty, but it was challenging enough to let me rlly enjoy the gameplay itself. And with playing through it practically 3 times over: it rlly helps u nail down the specifics.
My gripes are few but common amongst other peeps. I do wish we could have seen more of the trio’s friendship. Like Ventus and Aqua being friends more often would have been cool. Honestly just, more Aqua hanging out with them. And there’s no, recipe for melding stuff so you have to either guess or look up online how to get the best commands.
Other than that: ( Shakes this game in front of ur face like a pack of saltines) play ittttt
KH:ReCoded - Same as Days: watched the cutscenes and someone play it. It’s about this little dude who doesn’t know what the FUCK is going on but he’s there to help I guess?
Again, I can’t say much of the gameplay but it looks fun! Similar to Days but it’s more circuit board-esque. Love to play it someday for real!
Story: tbh it’s kinda lack luster but it REALLY gets you used to the concept of data worlds and how they work. Plus it introduces the Book of Prophecies and what the hell Maleficent is doin.
Data Soriku my beloveds <3 They are like, if Riku realized he was gay rlly early on and everything didnt get swallowed up by darkness. Wonderful. I hope to see them again :( Also what was up with Sora’s heartless evolving into a Darkside. Is that foreshadowing??? Should I be scared for my son o-o’’
Don’t skip it! Plz it’s actually quite good and both Data Sora and Data Riku are wonderful characters.
DDD - The gay one. Holy shit. Riku you poetic gay I’m going to put you back into the closet myself
Story: A really great way to focus on two different characters in different way — Sora’s being about his Heart Hotel and Riku’s being about his internal struggles. The concept of dream worlds are introduced here and while I’m still very 🤔 about it, theyre very interesting. This game rlly shines in how it writes Riku and is more focused on him as a whole. He’s pretty much the main protag of this game and his goal to find himself and Sora.
Gameplay: they got rid of the melding system :( but the Dream Eaters are super cool! It plays very similar to BBS but no shotlocks but it also has ✨Flowmotion✨. I love just launching myself into space with it. I also love naming my dream eaters and hanging out with them.
Gripes: Commantis. That’s it. That’s my gripe. It makes me wanna never play the game again. It’s such an insanely hard boss and for no reason!
0.2 - Short but does a brief character study on Aqua while she’s stuck in the realm of Darkness. Also the official KH dress up game.
Story: More a character study and a demo for KH3 than a whole game. Aqua’s thoughts and feelings on what she’s done, and she’s clearly got depression or something. I need her to be hugged and loved STAT. Also I’ll beat Yen Sid and Rickey Rat with my bare hands ☺️
Gameplay: You can complete it in a couple hours depending on how slow u are or if you wanna get all the outfits. Rlly wish they could have kept even a little of the dress up options going into KH3 but oh well. It’s weirdly laggy at points but I do LOVE the mirror puzzles. Again, more things I wish were in KH3.
Gripes: I don’t rlly, have any? It’s a good warm up going into KH3 with situation commands and everything. Some of the outfit challenges are fuckin WILD tho. Like you gotta defeat a certain boss with a finisher or not take damage during boss fights. Fuckin WILD
Great warm up game! Wish it was longer tho :(
KH3 - the big boye. The largest lad. The first game I ever actually paid attention to and actually caught my interest.
Story: It has KH2's problem i feel with everything at the start and end being important and then dying down in the middle. But I feel it does WAY better than Kh2. Nothing feels overly tedious and all the worlds and characters are a delight. One of my fav versions of Sora where he's still the happy-go-lucky son boy but theres some underlying sadness to him that accumulates until he breaks towards the end. It's great characterization for Sora, and I can't wait to see what Nomura has in store for him.
Also we get to save everyone and every time we watch Terra burst into tears I start crying. And the the Sea Salt Trio hugging ;0; Honestly? The end of this phase of KH is such a breath of fresh air. I’ve seen some peeps say that Roxas and Xion coming back demeans their sacrifices, and while I get that, I feel like the story of KH pushed so hard that Sora wanted them to be real again that them not coming back would have felt empty. Also KH as a whole puts this “everyone deserves a chance at life” thing out there and it makes me cry.
Gameplay: there is,,, so much. And all of it rocks. But keyblade transformations have to be my fav. Oh and Rage form; my little scrunkly <3. The game makes each keyblade viable and fun and it’s just so good. And they even made the Gummiship fun!! Say what you want about the story but holy shit this game is just a delight to play. I have yet to test Critical mode but I’m so ready. I’m gonna get Oblivion so badddd.
As for the Superbosses: fun. I can’t just keep saying that word over and over again but there’s rlly no other word to describe it! I’ve only done 3 so far (funniest defeat being Vanitas who got crushed by Meow Wow ass) and can’t wait to do the rest (I fear Yozora tho >_>’)
But I’m the best at cooking! That egg breaking mini game is my fav <3
Gripes: The DLC paywall probs. Kinda annoying but not the worst thing in the world. And like I said before, pacing’s rlly odd. But def a solid 9/10.
Melody of Memory: the rhythm game
Another one of those “if you don’t like the gameplay it’s rlly not worth buying” but I’m a HUGE fan of rhythm games. So I love it.
Rlly recommend getting headphones to play it. Also if ur having trouble hitting the notes you can adjust the timing in config!
Love that we got a 7 sec update this year for it and it was just Ienzo, Even, and Ansem freaking out over static KSJDKSNSK
Gripes: none rlly. Everything is enjoyably challenging. Not a whole lot of plot stuff tho. Very bare bones in terms of lore
Final ranking (from least to most fav)
KH2 -> CoM -> Days = Re:Coded -> 0.2 = DDD -> KH1 -> MoM -> KH3 = KH: BBS

“There is no one right way to live”
Tumblr media
Adventure and 02 really make up an unusual series in many ways, and I think one of them is how kind it is to the human condition. One of its most consistent commitments is to portraying its kids as “real children” -- as in, messy kids with some very deep nuances to their behavior, in ways that don’t reflect what you’d usually expect from media tropes. In some ways, it ended up backfiring (tropes are not inherently a bad thing, and it’s led to miscommunication that persists to this day because the audience has to fight a tendency to read the characters through the kinds of tropes we’re all expecting to find), but it also had the effect that these kids could be intimately relatable to the audience in ways that “textbook” portrayals of kids often wouldn’t be.
Adventure had eight main characters in its human cast, which was extended to twelve in 02 -- a massive balancing act -- and yet took the stance that none of these twelve characters’ very different ways of thinking or living life are fundamentally wrong. Rather, it celebrates the differences between them, and encourages them to embrace them about themselves. But it also does not shy away from the struggles those with each line of thinking might have in terms of communicating and interacting with the world. It’s easy to say words like “be yourself”, but what does “be yourself” really mean?
“Each character’s way of thinking”
Most people tend to define “character development” by “how much the character changed over the course of the narrative”, but if you look carefully, not all of the characters change that much. In fact, Koushirou and Miyako’s character arcs are about how they shouldn’t have to change much about themselves!
What we do get to see, however, is everyone’s intimate thought processes. We’re given so much information about each kid’s background and how it shapes their ways of thinking, and how they react to given situations, that you can get six fanfiction writers who have studied the series well and give them a completely hypothetical situation with some of the characters, and most if not all of them will roughly agree, because each kid’s thought pattern is so well detailed that you can easily imagine how they’d behave even when the scenario is hypothetical.
This, despite the fact that Adventure and 02 rarely use internal monologue (this is something specific to its Japanese version; while Japanese anime generally has less of this compared to Western shows, Adventure and 02 are unusually low on this even compared to later Digimon series, and it’s a possible byproduct of the narrative being eventually revealed to be from Takeru’s perspective and not someone truly omniscient). This is something that also somewhat backfired in that characters who are difficult to read or unaware of their own feelings become very difficult for the audience to read, so you have to read their behavior patterns and put two and two together (such as Takeru outright lying about his feelings regarding his childhood in Adventure episode 12, or Sora’s testimony about her confrontation with her mother not quite tracking with what’s actually depicted in Adventure episode 26). It does, however, have a very powerful weapon that it uses to help the audience understand each character’s mentalities and what they’re thinking at a given moment...
Tumblr media
Digimon partners! In a sense, “talking with a Digimon partner” is a replacement for internal monologue, because the kids spill their internal feelings to their partners as if they’re talking to themselves. (Protip for all of you fanfic writers out there who struggle to figure out how to integrate the Digimon smoothly into the narrative: “cutting out most of your internal monologue and replacing it with a conversation with a Digimon partner” is one of your most reliable fallbacks.) This is helpful for characters like Koushirou, who initially starts off Adventure as very isolated from the others but immediately takes well to Tentomon, and Ken, who spends a good part of 02′s third quarter still very emotionally distant from the others and not entirely willing to open up to them, but very conversely willing to open up to his own partner. Iori converses about his conflicted feelings regarding the situation with Upamon during the process of forming his Jogress relationship with Takeru, and, back in Adventure, Takeru himself was willing to show his more “less well-behaved” side in front of Patamon that he normally wouldn’t when he was constantly in the presence of elders.
On top of that, Digimon partners being reflective of the kids’ own personalities in some sense means that they are very good at asking just the right questions at the right time, or saying perfectly well-timed things that the kids needed to hear the most, to get them to reconsider their position or realize that they might be going in the wrong direction...
Tumblr media
Moreover, we get a lot of help in 02 simply by virtue of the fact it’s about relationships -- I’ve said this a few times before, but 02 is not a series about platitudes or toxic positivity, and has a strong emphasis on “you must understand the other person’s feelings if you want to truly reach out to them.” Showering happy platitudes about friendship on them means nothing if you’re still technically dismissing their feelings and making zero attempt to figure out why they feel this way! Therefore, everyone only accepts Ken when they each come to understand his feelings on the situation, and the Jogress arcs involve the relevant parties making active attempts to “understand the other person’s feelings” and what exactly makes them behave the way they do, before addressing their problems using what they need most at that moment. Being able to push people forward in a positive direction requires having a proper understanding of all of the negativity that came with it, accepting them in spite of that, and choosing to address what they need.
Tumblr media
And in 02 episode 49, Daisuke says something that embodies a lot of Adventure and 02′s attitude towards these things: it’s not a sin to have feelings. Your reaction or way of seeing things, based on your backgrounds and experiences that have shaped you, is not something you can be blamed for having, whether that means being worried, sad, frustrated, angry, resentful, what have you. The only question is what you do in response to your feelings.
It’s easy to say “be yourself”, but that’s obviously a problem if you “be yourself” by rampantly ignoring what other people think and trampling on other people’s feelings, and it’s also a problem if “being yourself” is causing problems for others, and it’s especially a problem if “being yourself” is also hurting yourself while you’re at it -- so what does it mean to be true to yourself?
It’s not about your inherent personality traits, it’s about what you choose to do with them
As I said earlier, Adventure and 02 all arguably celebrate the fact that everyone is so different, and has their own skills to contribute to the group. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, and everyone makes up for each other’s weaknesses when they work together. And some of these characters do change in order to become “better people”. But what does being a “better person” mean? How does that tie into still “being true to yourself”, and yet changing at the same time?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
02 episode 18 has Miyako in possibly one of her worst bouts of loss of control -- she has an effective panic attack and starts yelling at everyone in all directions, resulting in Hawkmon getting hurt. However, everyone here understands that Miyako meant well and was trying her best given the situation, and nobody scorns her for it, with Hikari even arranging for Miyako and Hawkmon to have proper space to emotionally air things out. Again: it was not a sin for Miyako to have feelings of anxiety, but it was a problem once those feelings led to causing trouble for others -- as in, trampling on their feelings, not having enough regard for their welfare, and such. Well-intentioned or not, Miyako just caused problems, and for that, Miyako labels herself as a “bad” person (tying into her ongoing character arc that involved negatively comparing herself to more mature and put-together people). However, Hawkmon assures her that he likes her the way she is.
But Miyako can’t keep going on like this -- it would obviously be very bad for her to keep being inconsiderate and trample on others’ feelings! But what does happen is that Miyako simply learns to channel these traits in the correct direction -- it’s established that, on the flip side, her being over-the-top brings joy to other people by making them laugh (02 episodes 31, 36, 38), and her aggressive personality is able to reach out to those like Hikari who are too closed in and on another unhealthy extreme! And as it turns out, she is capable of channeling all of those “aggressive” qualities into “aggressively”...reaching out to others and proactively supporting them; all she needed was a bit better sense of regulation so that her energy would go to the places she wanted them to be, rather than rampantly all over the place to the point of causing trouble. She didn’t have to fundamentally change herself into someone like Mimi or Hikari; it was just about adjusting her way of going about things just enough so that she could become more considerate.
Tumblr media
Even all the way back in Adventure episode 10, all of the “problems” caused in this episode specifically have to do with Koushirou ending up (accidentally) being inconsiderate to Mimi and Palmon and not taking their feelings enough into account. Again, Koushirou is not treated as if his feelings are wrong or malicious -- he even states that he thinks that the research he’s doing will help everyone in the long run -- but his way of handling this situation is awful, and, regardless of his intent, Mimi and Palmon are feeling abandoned and tossed aside.
For the rest of the series, Koushirou learns to hone his existing skills in analysis -- even his fixation tendencies are treated as a potentially valuable trait -- and, once we learn the details about how he started keeping distance from everyone due to the shock of learning he was adopted and his social anxiety tendencies in Adventure episode 38, Koushirou momentarily tries to force himself to use casual language, and his parents assure him that he doesn’t have to force himself to change. In the end, it’s not an inherent sin for Koushirou to have social anxiety, nor that he needs more time to adjust to becoming more casual with others -- according to Adventure episode 54, he does want to get closer to others eventually, but even Tentomon says he shouldn’t force himself. Koushirou “working past” his social issues doesn’t mean he suddenly has to turn himself into a socialite overnight, but rather, he simply needs to do enough to be able to communicate with others without (accidentally or otherwise) ignoring others’ important feelings. Thus, in 02, he’s still working on becoming less distant from everyone, but he’s managed to become someone who can communicate with and organize people, and is well-respected for it.
A recurring theme in Adventure and 02 is that there’s a good and a bad side to everything, and so if we look at the twelve kids over Adventure and 02, we can see that a lot of the “good things” and “bad things” about them really stem from the same thing:
Taichi: Being an ambitious person who can oversee people in disparate places and bring them together (good) also means that he’s not always good at checking the nuances or other potentially negative contingencies, and can be rather insensitive (bad)
Yamato: Being emotionally sensitive to others means he can be passionate and open about everything, and compassionate to others (good), but also means he can get explosively angry and lose control of himself (bad)
Sora: Being caring towards others and supportive (good) means that she can also end up developing self-destructive tendencies due to her perceived obligations to others (bad)
Koushirou: Being constantly curious and fixated on learning more means he can get to the bottom of things and answer questions that others can’t (good) but also means he can get too absorbed in it and not be able to take others into account (bad)
Mimi: Being extremely sensitive and empathetic means that she’s open-minded, compassionate, and all-loving (good) but also that she takes any kind of discomfort or emotionally draining thing extra hard, and may all too often be unable to take a stand even when she really should (bad)
Jou: Being constantly invested in everyone’s welfare and compelled to help them means he’s very honest and dutiful and otherwise reliable (good) but also means he can make very reckless decisions because he’s so stressed about everyone and everything (bad)
Takeru: Being good at maintaining an atmosphere of moderation and generally being able to handle very tough things means that he has a very strong grip on himself and doesn’t cause trouble for others easily (good) but also means he’s prone to sudden and irrational emotional outbursts because he’s suppressing so badly that he gets no catharsis and isn’t being honest about his own feelings (bad)
Hikari: Being compassionate and all-loving means that she can put her foot down easily for the sake of others and advocate for kindness (good) but also means that her desire to not be a burden on others makes her compulsively unable to vocalize any of her own personal problems to the point of self-destruction and passiveness (bad)
Daisuke: Being so deferential to others and pure-hearted means that he can focus practically on what needs to be done and be a supportive person to others (good) but also means that he’s prone to insecurity, defensiveness, and lack of assertiveness in the face of others (bad)
Miyako: Being over-the-top and full of bright energy means that she can bring joy to others and can reach out to those who have troubles (good) but also means that she has difficulty having restraint from losing control of herself (bad)
Iori: Being humble and a principled person means that he’s good at approaching things directly and driven by a constant desire to do good (good) but also can be so fixated on those principles that he clings onto them even far beyond practicality, and is constantly restraining himself more than should be necessary (bad)
Ken: Being assertive and able to have firm will means that he can get what he wants done for others and show kindness when he needs to (good) but also means that the same assertiveness can be used for uncontrolled sadism and inflicting pain on others (bad)
So, again: all of these characters are encouraged to embrace all of the good things about themselves, and to channel them in ways that are productive or healthy or help them live happily alongside others; all of those “bad” traits also being there doesn’t necessarily mean they have to blot out those personality aspects that have good sides to them as well! It’s just that those “bad” things need to be kept in check so that they don’t cause trouble, and you can read all of these character arcs in ways that involve everyone changing just enough to make sure those “bad” things don’t go rampant and cause problems everywhere -- and everyone’s an imperfect human being, so it’s unlikely that they’ve completely gotten rid of those entirely even into adulthood -- but they have better awareness of what they need to do, and how to better adjust themselves into better people.
Look at the difference between Ken and Daisuke -- Ken had to go through some massive changes because, as the Kaiser, his “bad” traits were going over the top and causing all sorts of harm to everyone, and there was a huge journey he had to go through to get that all in check, whereas Daisuke was always clearly a very pure-hearted person from the get-go and didn’t have to adjust himself as much. Yet you could say the same thing about both of them -- by Ken learning that his efforts and assertiveness were misplaced, and by Daisuke getting around his constant insecurity and need for validation in order to better lead everyone forward, they basically did the same thing, just in different ways, and they’re both better people for it.
Tumblr media
And it’s also the philosophy Jou endorses in Adventure episode 50 -- Mimi and Jou aren’t people who are necessarily best at fighting, and this isn’t inherently a sin. It’s just that they need to find ways to productively play to their own strengths in ways that are true to themselves. If Mimi can’t bring herself to engage in direct violence, she can at least use her skills to bring together everyone else who wants to protect the Digital World and prevent more casualties, and if Jou is, by his own admission, “not strong”, he can consider a path ahead of him that involves becoming a healer who can help those who are wounded, and prevent casualties that way.
There is no one right way to live.
What it is you want to do
Tumblr media
Here’s an interesting question about the 02 epilogue, and, while we’re at it, 02 episode 50 as a whole: Why are “careers” brought up so much? Timeskip epilogues are hardly new to 02 (and of course have popped up in media for years thereafter), but not all of them involve careers, and even fewer of them have that much focus on shoving “careers” into your face as the main centerpoint, especially since usually this kind of thing would be about family lives or romance or something (and we can say a lot about how the 02 epilogue cared so much about the career thing that it was blatantly prioritizing it over the hot-topic romance issue of Yamato and Sora).
Because, in the end, a career -- or, perhaps, a “future aspiration”, because various details about how the epilogue is presented indicate that “the career that defines your income and adult life” may not actually be the correct term here -- is the ultimate manifestation of “what it is you want to do with your life”. The point driven home by 02 episode 50 is that such a thing should be “what you want to do”, and, given that this was originally supposed to be the Adventure ending before 02 was conceived, it also ties into Adventure’s own theme of “finding your own path”. All of those “careers” listed in the 02 epilogue feel a lot more nonsensical when you think about it in terms of the material hobbies they had during the series, but make significantly more sense when you frame it in terms of what kind of personality each person had and what they would prioritize. Materially, if you think about what Taichi had as a “hobby” during Adventure and 02, it would be soccer, but when you think about him being “an ambitious, wide-reaching leader who brings people from different places together”, his career of “diplomat to bring two worlds together” makes much more sense. It wasn’t about what they’re doing to pay the bills; it’s about “what’s most important in each of their lives”.
And, as far as the series is concerned, none of these decisions are the “wrong” ones; if there’s a “wrong” decision, it’s the one 02 (and later Kizuna) warned you about, in terms of blotting your own self out and making yourself unhappy because you did it for the sake of society’s expectations instead of for yourself. There’s even a difference between the Adventure group and 02 group in their own priorities, in that the former is more individualistic and far-reaching in terms of personal ambition, and the latter prioritizes mutual support and living simpler lives as long as it makes them happy, and as far as Adventure and 02 are concerned, that’s all fine, because those are choices that suit their own dispositions and fit things that they want to do first and foremost.
Everyone is different, everyone has different priorities, and everyone has different ways to live. Everyone has different perspectives and feelings, and once the arguments are ironed out, those should be cherished and celebrated.

Hello! Do you have any headcanons for Kairi, Xion, and Aqua with a shy S/O? Thank you :)
Having a Shy S/O
FANDOM: Kingdom Hearts
Character(s): Aqua, Kairi, Xion
Type of Request: Headcanons
Word Count: 508
Note(s): Ooh I love these sweet babes~
Tumblr media
Aqua
Finds your shyness really cute. Honestly thinks it goes pretty well with her trio with how Ven and Terra are kind of loners.
Does enjoy taking nice, quiet walks with you away from everything. Honestly just enjoying the nature with just you two is so relaxing.
Aqua does want to push you a bit out of your comfort zone. She won’t make you talk to lots of people, but she will try and get you to speak up a bit more if someone you’re not too familiar with tries to talk.
She is quick to jump to your rescue though if she notices you getting too uncomfortable, giving you a pat on the head and telling you that you did good with what you did deal with.
She enjoys giving you pats on the head and holding your hand but besides that, she’ll let you decide how much affection you want.
Kairi
Kairi finds your shyness cute and promises that she’ll protect you from others due to you being shy.
Like if people suddenly approach, wanting to talk about something then she’ll immediately step in front of you and come up with an excuse.
She will want to introduce you to Sora and Riku, promising to let them know in advance because they can be a bit much at times (Sora moreso).
Kairi is happy to be the extrovert to your introvert too. Like if you want to stay home then she’ll gladly go someplace for you instead, bringing back souvenirs or plates of food for you to enjoy as well.
She figures that big displays of affection would be too much so she loves to hold your hand, giving you little squeezes now and then. Kairi would love to give you a lot more affection than that, but lets you move on your own time.
Xion
Xion is a bit shy herself. She’s more open because she trusts you and she is also open with her few close friends, but other than that she’s a recluse so your personalities are perfect together.
Also likes the fact that you’re shy because it gives her an excuse to not be around so many people, not that she’s usually around a lot of people but it gives her an excuse to cancel plans which is always therapeutic to her.
She does enjoy being with you when it’s just you two. Gives her the perfect excuse to just enjoy your company without anyone else around.
Of course she does introduce you to Axel and Roxas. She doesn’t expect you to open up immediately, she definitely didn’t, but she trusts them both and knows you’ll like them and they’ll like you.
If you’re shy affection wise as well then worry not because so is Xion. She’s just so unsure and doesn’t know the right things to do when it comes to her emotions, especially with the relationship so she hesitates a lot to give affection. She will ask if you’re okay with things (like if she wants to hold your hand but is unsure).

Something I think about every now and then is Sora & Kairi's character development in relation to whether or not Kairi can fight. In KH1 Kairi wants to help find Riku and Mickey, but Sora insists she shouldn't. What's interesting is how she complies with what he tells her. Later throughout the series she tries to get involved in the fighting, particular in KH2, but is often barred from doing so or made to wait. In ReMind she finally gets to fight and Sora encourages and fights alongside her.
I bring this up because it's not something a lot of KH fans seem to talk about. How Sora basically discourages her at first and she does what he says, but a little over a year later she gets to do what she wants to do and he supports her.
Yeah, there's an interesting contrast to the moment in KH1 and to that of them working together in KH3. Though, it's a little too Sora vs. Kairi in what you're saying, no? In the perspective of her being involved, I mean, which I know that’s not what you really mean, but it’s a good chance to talk about it for those who do.
I wouldn't really paint the specifics as Sora spending any opportunity he can to discourage her from being involved until KH3. in KH1, Kairi not going with SDG back to Hollow Bastion just makes sense—from the perspective of likely everyone else who was even there to have a say, too. While the other Princesses of Heart were still there, throwing her back in the fire, as she is, would be a bit counterproductive as to why they were there and even left. It isn't just Sora telling her what to do, it just makes sense. But after KH1? It doesn't really happen at any other significant moment of her being told by Sora to not fight.
In KH2, I don't believe anyone particularly tries to get her to leave TWTNW, especially given Riku is the one to give her Destiny's Embrace in order to fight. She didn't really have other opportunities to join in the boss battles beyond that anyway, and if the narrative was trying to push that Kairi shouldn't have been involved at all, they would've written in for Sora to try and convince her to go back to Twilight Town or any other safe place BEFORE the final door is opened to go after Xemnas the first time. All that we get is a text-dialogue that you can speak to Kairi before going through the door, and she just mentions to not be told to wait anymore and that they'll follow each other. No one tried to exactly stop her or anything in KH2. And DDD, she wasn't the one who was called to take the Mastery test, so that didn't really happen there either.
MoM, yeah Riku tells her she isn't ready and she agrees, but unlike the moment in KH1, this actually has a purpose for her as a character.
Talking about Kairi's development, I don't particularly look at as her overcoming other people's safety nets. It's really just about her growing in her own capabilities and being able to showcase that. I often think about her story in relation to Gohan from DBZ—someone who had the build up of their true potential span over three different sagas in the story (and really into the Buu Saga as well, but I consider SSJ2 to be what really climaxes his growth story). Just like him, Kairi has so much latent potential and a powerful light, and the KH writers are really stretching out the build up of her reaching a point to where she's fully capable, if not to be an eventual Keyblade Master herself. I know everyone hates this in regards to Sora and Riku's development as fighters, but when I do think about it like Gohan's story, it makes me believe that the purposeful build up of Kairi's potential is for a significant reason. Otherwise, she'd just be another fighter like everyone else whose just ready to throw down constantly. Her being in this position of needing to train, at least to my hope, seems to be more than just getting her up to speed, which is what KH3 did on its own. I think this is for something greater given the writing.
Of course, I'm not sure if we'll get a moment of Kairi soloing a final boss or anything like Gohan (as no one really has, not even Sora), but the impression of her true potential being fulfilled is something I want to see, and training with Aqua will give us Kairi fans something, I hope.

I'd like to request the usual "(characters) reaction to their s/o being killed" with the sdra2 characters if ye dont mind
Ah a classic angst-fueled request! I’ll just do some of the characters.
.........
Yuri
“...моя любовь?" (”..my love?”)
His whole world came crashing down at the sight of your body--ruined by the killer’s trap/weapon(s).
He’s not much help in the investigation, though he says he’ll try looking around your room for clues (when in reality he just curls up on your bed and cries until Monocrow summons everyone to the trial)
The only time he speaks in the trial is when he’s shouting at the males--suspecting all of them for doing something so horrible to you.
If a male did kill you....that only fuels his hatred.
If a female killed you...he feels hurt and devastated.
Why did it have to be you? He tried offering himself up as a victim, even though you convinced him not to do that.
Yet instead they took away someone so precious to him--the one he loved more than all the stars in the sky.
Yuki
Not seeing you around when the body discovery announcement played made him assume the worst.
But he prayed his luck would help him somehow as he ran to the location-
Only to stop as those who noticed him enter suddenly gather around the body, including Sora and Shinji, as though trying to prevent him from seeing who it was..
“What are you doing?!! Where’s [y/n]?!! I NEED TO SEE THEM!!!”
"B-Bro...I’m..I’m so sorry.” The firefighter can only mumble in sorrow as he finally moves aside, revealing your corpse.
Yuki just drops to his knees, screaming and crying and begging for this not to be real.
He remains inconsolable the entire time everyone’s investigating, shutting down even when asked about his alibi during the trial.
“Does it matter what I say...? At this point, I-I’d rather die..s/o was all the hope I had left.."
Only Sora snaps him out of it, insisting you wouldn’t want him giving up now.
Teruya
‘Oh no....nonononononono-’
It’s a sight he’s gotten used to over and over again..but it’s not any less painful knowing it was you who became that grisly sight.
In fact it’s even more painful for him.
He thought he kept a close eye on you. He promised you wouldn’t die on his watch.
So why did he fail again? What went wrong?
Why does everyone he loved keep dying?
It’s hard to keep pushing forward, but he knows it’s what you’d want him to do.
Given his habit of collecting stuff, he’ll probably wear a necklace/bracelet/some article of clothing that belonged to you as a reminder of the love you’ve shown him.
He hardly blames the culprit, only himself for his failure and that damned wizard for putting everyone into this terrible situation.
Mikado
He hears the announcement and thinks to himself ‘ah, it’s about time! I wonder if Iroha finally got her act together-’
But when he sees your body...he feels his heart crack into pieces.
His classmates had only shown sympathy towards him when you two were dating--as you were able to see good behind the mastermind’s sinister masks.
With you gone, though..they aren’t sure what to say to him..
Nobody wanted to risk being burnt to a crisp.
Despite everything, Mikado manages to force a smile, reassuring himself that your death would go on to serve a greater purpose in his plan.
As long as Void's goal was completed in the end, it’s okay....right?
After it’s revealed Iroha did kill you (albeit accidentally) and was executed, the wizard returned to his room.
Only then did he drop the act, tears streaming down his real face as he cried in anger and his magic spiraled out of control
Monocrow had to replace a lot of the burnt furniture soon after.
Nikei
‘Another dead body announcement? Great..’
And he was almost finished with his recent scoop on how brave you were throughout this whole killing game.
You’ve always joked about how he found every bit of your personality “newsworthy”. But it was true.
Just thinking of your flustered reaction to the paper he was gonna give you made him happy.
But...the sight of your motionless body stripped that happiness from him instantly. He nearly broke his pen in half.
He’s more cooperative in this investigation than before, writing down every detail/clue he can find. He wanted, needed to understand how and why you died.
When the truth comes out, though, Nikei only feels emptiness--blankly staring at your murderer’s execution.
Now he stays up all night writing articles about grief, loss, sorrow, and the like--tears staining every page.
Hibiki & Kanade
They’re in absolute hysteria. Or at least Hibiki is.
She has to be restrained by her sister and Setsuka so she doesn’t tamper with the crime scene. But she can only wail and shout at you to wake up.
Though when the reality sets in she’s unable to handle the investigation, so Kanade does most of the work.
Don’t get her wrong, she’s heartbroken, too. She loved you just as much as her sister, feeling disappointed in herself for not keeping a closer eye on you.
"I know it hurts, big sis, but crying isn’t going to bring s/o back to life. So we need to get through this trial for their sake, okay?”
It’s unbelievably hard, as Hibiki struggles to say your name without bursting into tears, but she tries her best to calm herself during the trial.
At every breakfast since then, it’s been odd having that chair between her and Kanade be completely empty.
Setsuka
She is one distraught mother hen.
You were just smiling and laughing with her this morning, contemplating life as you two walked around the new island.
And now..you’re gone? Just like that?
How could she let this happen...?
She’s struggling to keep herself from falling apart as she investigates everything, promising you justice.
Though she can barely rally everyone’s spirits in your trial, despite her forceful smiles.
It just hurts too much every time she sees your gray portrait beside her.
Once it’s all over she cries into Hibiki’s arms, and the vocalist consoles her without question--knowing the taller woman always did the same for her.

Arc-V 7th Anniversary
Alright fellas here it is! It’s been 7 years since Yugioh Arc-V first graced our lives, and I thought I’d celebrate this by going over my personal Top 5 Duels in the series! This list is just my opinion, and you don’t have to agree/disagree or whatever, it’s just for fun. Let’s get to it!
#5: Yuya vs Barret, Synchro Arc
Tumblr media
This duel is probably the one that no one expected to be on this list, but it’s actually a critical moment to Yuya’s growth as a character (I know some might have expected the 227 duel here but that one serves more towards narrative parallels and foreshadowing rather than actual character growth). This duel is here for one important reason: It’s the moment where Yuya truly let go of Yusho’s ideals. The Dimensional War had only began to get more chaotic as time passed, with Academia sending no shortage of goons after them, but this is the duel where Yuya is forced to choose: Yuzu’s (and his friends) life, or Smile World (the representation of his father’s ideals). Ultimately, Yuya does choose Yuzu, but this duel is also one of the most agonized we see Yuya after because Yuzu was still kidnapped anyways. To him, he threw away both of them by being forced to choose. However, it’s also what does encourage him to finally take that first step he needed, the buildup to the entire Synchro arc of finding his own words, and challenges Jack for their last rematch
#4: Tsukikage and Sora vs Obelisk Force, Synchro Arc
Tumblr media
Ok THIS ONE is the one that no one actually expected, but I really do like it since it’s a good bit of character building for both Sora and Tsukikage (also I didn’t want this list to just be Yuya duels). Tsukikage was a surprising dark horse in Arc V because of how much he actually was developed. His design wasn’t anything special and he was legitimately just hired help by Reiji. However, in this duel we see a ton of incredible character defining moments for him: His grudge against Sora and Academia for what happened to his brother, his commitment not just to Reiji but to the Lancers, his trust in Reira but also his concern, and the tag team with Sora where he makes clear that he never intends to forgive Sora for his involvement with Academia, but he thanks him regardless. This is also the duel that firmly cements Sora as a good guy after about 50+ episodes of him being a villain from his initial heel face turn, where he finally decides that the friends he made in Standard Dimension are too important for him to turn his back on despite Academia being a literal child military. Speaking of…
#3: Shun vs Sora, Maiami Championship
Tumblr media
The granddaddy of all tone setting duels in this series, this duel has a lot going for it, but it is phenomenal for one reason alone: how absolutely brutal it is. Yugioh has always gone out of its way to forgive all the cartoon violence in duels as just monsters looking cool, but this duel kicks it up a notch by showcasing just how brutal the Dimensional War between the Fusion and XYZ dimensions was. And mind you, at this point in the series, it was only slightly hinted, and we later see it in more brutal detail in Shun vs Dennis (Friendship Cup) and the duels in the XYZ Dimension, but this duel has another point to its favor: Sora’s heel face turn. At this point, all we knew was that Shun was going around attacking random duelists for no reason. However, it’s when Sora breaks out his own Evil Face™ that we really see the dynamic at play here: Sora is the spy sent to lower everyone’s guards, while Shun is the compassionate avenger that’s trying to prevent another dimension from falling the way his did. No other duel Shun has ever had as much impact as this one with the exception of his duel with Dennis in Synchro, but when put side by side, this is the duel that stands out because it’s when the series truly begins to take its darker turn.
#2: Yuya vs Jack, End of Synchro Arc
Tumblr media
This one I feel is a little controversial, but I absolutely cannot understate just how important this duel is for Yuya’s character. The Synchro arc as a whole was considered a drag by many, and while there certainly are parts that it feels as such, it is undeniable that it provides very critical development for Yuya. This entire time, Yuya has thought that he could simply parrot his father’s ideals as a way to cope with his own insecurities (shirou emiya much? Lmao). However, Jack sees right through his game and completely humiliates him in their first encounter, telling Yuya that he isn’t worthy to stand against him unless Yuya can find his own words instead of the words he borrowed. After this encounter, Yuya tries to force his ideals again, but realizes that he needs to find another way to convey the message and ideals of Duels with Smiles that he wants. His duel with Shinji, Duel Chaser 227 and Crow all had Yuya learn different ways of expressing himself and further evolving his duel, up until this final confrontation. Deciding that instead of letting Academia and The Tops having their way, Yuya squares up and challenges Jack on his own terms for a final rematch. Throughout the duel, we see Yuya apply everything he’s learned so far, but Jack still tells him that he’s holding back and using borrowed words instead of his own, until Yuya finally hits his breakthrough: Pendulum was something he didn’t borrow from anyone, and it’s HIS OWN WORDS to convey his message. With that breakthrough, Jack has finally found an opponent worthy to test himself against once more, because he’s grown so strong that no one in Synchro Dimension was able to challenge him and his drive for self-improvement. Jack in general was such a clutch character to bring back because he’s the exact type of impetus that Yuya needed: A mentor who wasn’t afraid to tell him that he’s simply hiding behind what was given to him, and rather pushed him to achieve greater heights than Yuya himself thought he was capable of.
Alright before the #1 duel, let me list some honorable mentions bc while these didn’t make my top 5, I do still believe they are important and are all fantastic duels in their own right.
Honorable Mentions:
- Yuya vs Kachidoki, Maiami Cup - Yuya vs Gongenzaka, First Match - Shun vs Dennis, Friendship Cup  - Yuya vs Yuri, Academia Arc - Yuya vs Battle Beast, Academia Arc - Yuya vs Duel Chaser 227, Friendship Cup - Yugo vs Serena, Friendship Cup - Yuzu vs Masumi, Maiami Cup - Yuya vs Shingo, Yosenju deck Maiami Cup - Shun vs LDS Trio, Start of Series - Yuto-Yuya vs Kaito, Academia Arc - Yuto-Yuya vs Edo, Academia Arc - Yuya vs Reiji, Round 1
And now...
#1: Zarc vs Lancers, Academia Arc
Tumblr media
By and far what I consider to be the pinnacle of all duels across the ENTIRE Yugioh series (even beating out Yusei vs Z-ONE), this is less of a duel and more of an all-out war, the culmination of 130+ episodes of masterful foreshadowing and incredible build-up that results in what I consider the best final boss reveal in the series. Arc V is a master of foreshadowing across the series, and kept giving us hints that something BIG was coming, that The Professor and Academia weren’t actually the endgame villains of the series, and after the cast barely manages to eek out a victory against Yuri, it’s ultimately a failure as all the pieces are in place for Yuya to finish his IMA KOSO HITOTSU NI fusion with all his dimensional counterparts. Every single character, good guys, bad guys, and everyone in-between watch as reality falls apart, and births the monster made by their own hands, that is Zarc. I need to reiterate here that the greatest strength of Arc-V is foreshadowing because throughout this duel, we see the application of the ideals that Yuya had developed on his own, as “his own words” are what reaches to the extended cast. It was Yuya’s duty to raise them up as the Pioneer of Pendulum, now it was their job to drag Yuya back from what he has been reduced to. And all throughout, we see how Zarc was made, how he was so similar to Yuya in almost every regard, and we are reminded of all the times Yuya failed but had his friends to help him up, and how Zarc was just a Yuya who had no one to help him when he failed. Zarc who hurt people because it was demanded of him, and ultimately embraced his role as a violent villain as his ultimate act of revenge, because his audience asked for it. And yet, we also see Zarc have his absolute ass dragged by SAWATARI of all characters, and we see just how much of a coward Zarc really was. The entire duel just has so much going for it: Jack-Gongenzaka tag team, Ray and Reiji calling out to Zarc and Yuya, Zarc’s continued insistence that he’s just a monster, It’s So Damn Good. I tell people to watch Yugioh anyways because Yugioh is a great series, but this duel is so good that I would unironically tell people to watch Arc V just so they can watch this duel (outside of the many reasons I recommend arc v). It’s so good, Zarc is such a fun villain, it’s the climax of Yuya’s entire character arc, and I hold it in high regard as the best duel in Arc-V.
Thanks for taking the time to look through this little retrospective on one of my all-time favorite series, here’s to Arc-V’s 7th anniversary!

Ep 38 is another good one! We are on a roll. I have some thoughts on why and whether I could still end up whining in future episodes again... but for now let’s just enjoy the moment.
We are finally catching up with Yamato (and Jou) who has the sort of episode you’d expect from the brooding lone wolf of the group. I wish they’d pushed it just a liiiittle further than they did and I’ll tell you why below. Still, the point is we learned some things we needed to about Yamato, and with some higher than usual stakes (for a side plot) than usual.
Pic of the day, though, is all about his highness, our lord and savior, JOOOOOOOOO.
Tumblr media
You will bow before him, peasant!
More below.
Like I said, the stakes are a bit high this week:
Tumblr media
Right off the bat, Gabumon’s been beaten, captured, and tied to a cross...
Tumblr media
... where Mephismon (this guy) is apparently planning to kill him in ritual sacrifice.
In other words, this episode is: Yamato and Gabumon Go To Digimon Hell
:P
I mean... Mephismon even looks scary. Very Satanic. Gives me chill, lol. Probably not as scary for kids who didn’t grow up being hit over the head with a Bible every day by evangelicals, though. Sometimes I look back on my childhood and just think “wtf?”
That being said, Mephismon is the sort of lackey you’d expect Millenniumon to have, much more in the vein of Devimon or DarkKnightmon. Aka, pretty darn scary. I was so frustrated for so long by all the small fry Digimon Taichi “struggled” with by himself for no apparent reason - they felt like filler episodes, tbh - filler for a show that has no reason to have filler!
And I STILL do NOT understand why we got WarGreymon’s evolution over a totally forgettable nobody Digimon, but these recent episodes with Koushirou, Mimi, and Yamato have all been serious crises where the characters put everything on the line, and yet nobody evolves. It’s not that I think they HAD to evolve here - I can see they’re leading up to it and since that guarantees more focus on them in the future, I’m totally down for that. What I don’t understand is why Taichi DIDN’T get that. Why play WarGreymon so early? The episode itself did involve Taichi challenging himself, but it all felt so setup. And so unmemorable that it’s just hard to care.
Anyway... I’m ranting about things that didn’t happen in this episode. Rant over xD Back to Yamato.
Tumblr media
His desperate play to rescue Gabumon by himself goes as well as you’d expect.
Yamato: I’m too cool for this shit
Tumblr media
He is chased by those gas mask-wearing Digimon whose name I forget. But they are conveniently blown back by the gush of a timely geyser. Geyser, you say? That means hot springs must be nearby. If hot springs are nearby...
Tumblr media
Jou: Now I know what it feels like to be Team Rocket!
Jou falls out of the sky and right into Yamato’s path. Dressed in nothig but a towel, he looks to Yamato like a scrawny, nerdy, guardian angel.
Tumblr media
Yamato: You’ve gotta help me, Clarence. Fly me to the top of the mountain.
Jou: I can’t, I haven’t got my wings.
Yamato: Yeah, you’re about what I’d expect my guardian angel to be like...
So, Jou immediately starts to chatter at Yamato, and it looked to me like Yamato might be getting annoyed. If this were 99 Adventure, he’d had snapped and said something like, “Can’t you see Gabumon’s gone? Aren’t you even going to ask about that or do you only think about yourself?”
But this is 2020 Yamato, and 2020 Digimon Adventure, where the kids are all Very Nice and don’t have much in the way of flaws. That’s my number one complaint about this show so far. So Yamato just waits for the moment where Jou needs to take a breath to break and ask for his help rescuing Gabumon.
(Gomamon reminds Jou to get dressed first, thankfully.)
Tumblr media
Up on the mountain peak, Mephismon sacrifices the Data of poor blue!Elecmon to the fragment of Millenniumon he is guarding.
Tumblr media
At first I was like, why do Yamato and Jou know about these crystals?? But then they’re like, we heard from Taichi over the digivice. Ah, of course. I kind of miss the old digivices that pre-date smartphones :P
Tumblr media
Yamato explains how they ended up in this situation, and I REALLY like this. They came across Mephismon sacrificing innocent Digimon on their journey to reunite with the rest of the team, and it was Gabumon who insisted they had to stay and save them. Gabumon!
So this is not the first time we’ve seen the Digimon partners take initiative this season. The lack of personal flaws and personality clashes are my least favorite part of the reboot, but the increased agency of the Digimon themselves is probably my favorite. When DanDevimon swallowed Taichi, it was Agumon’s pain that caused his warp evolution. Not saying Taichi had nothing to do with it, but the focus was certainly way more on how losing his partner sent Agumon over the edge. Now we’ve got Yamato actually arguing with Yamato because he feels so passionate about rescuing the captured Digimon.
Yamato’s not heartless, of course - he just prioritizes the people closest to him first. And I have no idea if we’ll see much more of this sort of willpower from Gabumon - it’s partly there for convenience, since no one else is around. (Last time, it was Sora who wanted to help others at their own risk and Yamato clashed with her over the same thing.) The other reason is, this is the episode where we find out how Yamato and Gabumon became friends - which is especially important for the guy who gets the Crest of Friendship - so they needed something a bit more meaty than “the proof of our friendship is I follow you wherever you go and do whatever you want.”
But I love it because it really makes them feel like partners.
Tumblr media
Of course, Yamato can’t say no in the end, so he and Gabumon go to save the Digimon. But they’re overwhelmed.
Tumblr media
The vision of his partner’s bony ass shrinking into the distance as bullets fly overhead will haunt his dreams always ;^;
Tumblr media
Yamato: Once a psychic read my palm and said I have an unusually short life line. I guess she was right. But she also said I’d marry Emma Stone and have eight children.
Jou: are you sure she wasn’t just playing a game of MASH?
Tumblr media
While Yamato and Jou plan their strategy, we switch back to the rest of the team, where the girls are having tea time.
I know I complain about this every time but WHO DA HECK decided Sora and Mimi should wear the same color scheme look what you did now they both blend into the couch
Tumblr media
The boys talk a bit of shop, then Takeru reveals that he and Yamato don’t live together because their parents fight and don’t get to see each other because they both work so much. He doesn’t really come out and say “they’re divorced” but he says he and his brother are separated. Even though Yamato calls Takeru to talk a lot, Takeru still feels sad that there are things he misses since they live so far apart.
Tumblr media
Taichi assures Takeru that Yamato will be fine, pointing out that Yamato had already been adventuring in the digital world for an unknown amount of time before Taichi’s group ever got there. Wow, haven’t referenced that in literally ages. I’m glad these things are finally relevant again. Also like how it seems to confirm Taichi still kinda holds special admiration for Yamato. That seemed like the route they were going way back when Yamato joined the group in episode 8, but then it wasn’t touched on till now.
Tumblr media
Then we get the long-awaited Yamato & Gabumon origin story! Yamato appears to have arrived in the digital world in a similar way that Taichi did. He looks the same, so probably it wasn’t a huge time difference (in human world time anyway).
Tumblr media
At first, Yamato’s like, “leave me alone. I don’t have any interest in the digital world. Where’s the exit?” And Tsunomon says, “Fine, then I will just protect you whether you want me to or not.”
Tumblr media
Yamato: Reeeeeally wishing Ikkakumon could fly, lol
Tumblr media
Yamato recalls how, despite his chilly behavior, Tsunomon still jumped to his rescue.
Tumblr media
(The rescue involved Ikkakumon shooting torpedoes up the mountainside so Yamato can grab them and climb to the top. What I don’t get is why this didn’t draw Mephismon’s attention :P I guess he figured his gas mask lackeys would handle it but uh.)
Tumblr media
Past!Yamato rescues Tsunomon, who is so touched that he is able to evolve. Yamato makes an attempt to remain aloof...
Tumblr media
... but in the end he turns into Taichi :P
So that’s the origin story! It’s more or less what I figured. Kind of surprised we didn’t get any scenes of them in the digital world proper, since I got the impression Yamato was familiar with that world as well as this plane that seems to be a sort of interface between worlds. But maybe not, who knows.
What they try to do here is set up that Yamato is an aloof type who tries to avoid relationships. But he snaps out of it and warms up to people so fast that it’s hard to really appreciate it. Plus he doesn’t really do much to push them away other than say “leave me alone.” Eh.
Tumblr media
Lol it’s funny because he’s strapped to the cross but because his leg fur hangs like that, from behind it looks like he’s just standing there....
Tumblr media
Mephismon starts to sacrifice Gabumon!
Tumblr media
A power blast of dark energy starts to pulse from the mountain, sending everyone to their knees. Jou thinks fast and hides inside his bag. Nylon is good at blocking out satanic chanting after all.
Tumblr media
His eyes fall on... his textbooks! Social studies, chemistry, the periodic table, Japanese history memorization textbook... these useless books! Could they actually be useful?!?!?!
no.
no they couldn’t
Tumblr media
Yamato: Ahh! That’s it, I have got to start lifting more.
Tumblr media
But wait - Jou gets an idea. There’s something that calms him when he’s stressed and that’s... chanting passages from his rote memorization technique books x’D So he sits down and... it’s basically a throw back to the Bakemon episode in 99. I believe he’s chanting things from the Japanese history book, but as I’ve never been a Japanese kid, I’d have to do more research than I want to to figure out for sure.
Tumblr media
He then switches to chanting the numerals of pi! He has pi memorized! x’D I don’t know why that should surprise me. He soon begins to glow with the Zen energy of a cram school trance.
Tumblr media
Jou: 3.14159265359... 3.14159265359...
Tumblr media
Gas mask Digimon: 3.14159265359.... 3.14159265359...
These bright ripples emanate from Jou, counteracting the evil ripples coming from Mephismon’s mountain. It soon pulls the gas mask Digimon into the trance as well.
Tumblr media
Ikkakumon: ... I have no effing idea what is going in this episode on anymore
Tumblr media
Jou comes out of the trance to discover the gas mask Digimon ARE NOW HIS OBEDIENT SUBJECTS. WHAT.
(see I told you you’d bow)
seriously what just happened! XD is this Jou’s mutant power
or is this something all Japanese children who survive juku can do as a result of spending so much time memorizing shit
Tumblr media
Ikkakumon then is able to shoot a bunch better pathway of torpedoes for Yamato to climb and MEPHISMON STILL DOESN’T NOTICE
Tumblr media
Yamato finally makes it to the peak!
Tumblr media
Mephismon’s like, “nice try, but what were you planning to do now? You left your friend at the bottom of the mountain and I’ve got your partner. And I doubt you’ve memorized all the numerals of pi.”
Tumblr media
He kindly creates an evil burning vortex to increased the hellishness of the landscape. He understands that a Yamato episode needs the proper ambience.
Tumblr media
Gabumon’s about to be sacrificed to Digi-Satan lmao
Tumblr media
Yamato steps into the pentagram and get shocked. But he presses on despite the difficulty (and the hellfire), thinking about how much his partner means to him.
Tumblr media
He drops to his knees while Gabumon begs him to save himself.
Yamato: “You’re my... friend!”
Tumblr media
The power of friendship destroys the pentragram and also frees Gabumon from the cross.
Tumblr media
The Crest of Friendship glows...
Tumblr media
Gabumon is strengthened and becomes... WereGarurumon.
:P
Yeah... seemed like a good time for MetalGarurumon but whatever.
Tumblr media
After a cool but brief fight, Mephismon is defeated.
Tumblr media
He appears frozen? Can Gabumon freeze stuff? Whatev. Anyway he’s frozen and then disintegrates.
Tumblr media
Gabumon is tired but happy. Their bond is now even stronger.
Tumblr media
Cute Takeru on Pegasusmon flies down to his brother at last.
Tumblr media
And the others wave up to them from Komondomon. Aw. So finally the team is back together! ;__; Please let it last this time, please please please....
Kay so, overall... I liked this episode. The whole “You’re my friend!” bit would have been stronger if we’d seen more of Yamato resisting that though. I don’t really know why but the reboot seems to pull its punches a lot. I really wish they’d let the kids be mean to each other like 99 Adventure did sometimes. Being mean doesn’t mean you’re a bad person and a terrible influence on children watching your show. It just means you are human and your viewers can learn from watching your mistakes and seeing your growth. Try to understand that, showrunners :P
A missed opportunity in this episode: Yamato and Jou. I was excited that they were gonna be together because they often clashed in 99. And in the reboot as well, it was established that Yamato is annoyed by Jou, although he’s much more polite and hadn’t said anything about it till now (just stayed away from wherever Jou was until he fell asleep lol). So I thought, in this ep, we’d see them butt heads and learn to work together, something like that. But aside from the very first moment where Yamato might look a teensy bit annoyed, they just get alone fine. Idk. Not interesting.
In the end, though, the ep was clearly meant to be Yamato only and Jou was just there as a matter of convenience so the whole group would be together at the end. Since the team is finally reunited, I hope we do start to see all of them interacting in different ways that show their personalities more. Might not be the same as 99 (or, I should say definitely won’t be, at this point), but just something more than “look how well we all get along.”
Next week...
Tumblr media
Looks to be a light and funny episode. The Burgermon were one of my fav bits of Frontier. But I’m a little nervous about this being a Jou epiosde. It’s his turn, I know, but everyone else got something meaningful. Even Mimi - though there was lots of humor in her episode, she was also major league cool the entire time. Maybe that will be the case with Jou here, but I’m not sure because 2020 Jou is a little different - more scatterbrained, more open, more talkative, less serious, less likely to act sullen... he’s quite different, now that I think about it. So I’m actually having difficulty imagining what his personal test will be in this episode. Guess we’ll have to wait and find out. Maybe it won’t even be that kind of episode anyway.
Also, just a guess, but next week is ep 39. So ep 40 maybe will be the start of something big again. It would be good timing: the team’s together and everyone’s had a chance recently for an episode to themselves...
See y’all next week! As usual didn’t check for typos :P

Magic Lantern - Monument: Chapter 5
Location: Magic Lantern Stage Characters: Sora, Natsume & Tsumugi
< One week after. The start of “Magic Lantern Fest”. >
Tumblr media
Sora: “♪~♪~♪”
Tsumugi: “Everyone! Thank you for coming despite the bad weather! We welcome you all~♪”
Natsume: “We’ll show you the best kind of magic that’ll make you forget the melancholic weathER!”
Sora: “Welcome! To ‘Switch’s’ concert! Thank you for coming to see Sora and the others!”

Tsumugi: ……!? Did Sora-kun just chant a “spell” like Natsume-kun?
Natsume: YeAH. I’m honoured to see that you’ve become a master in “imitating” mE. I don’t think Sora did that intentionally, thouGH…
As a magiciAN, he’s my “disciple” who has always watched me and followed my teachings, after aLL.
If anything, it would be even stranger if he didn’t use the same magic as mE.
Tsumugi: He must have felt a bit hesitant around you~ Thinking that it’s impossible for the disciple to surpass the master. He’s a kind child but he does take a step back from everything else around him.
Natsume: YeAH, he’s too much of a good bOY – it kinda irks mE.
By the way, I don’t think you’ve noticed, but Sora has been copying you tOO, Senpai.
I tend to act lazy and cool, but I actually have a bad habit of putting on a front to fool whoever I’m talking to in order to cover up what I laCK.
“Switch’s” unique production also started as something as a deceptive trick in the beginniNG.
But that was the result of me pushing myself to the limit, in order for me to catch up to my brothers in the “Five Oddballs” as quickly as I couLD.
But you’ve been studying at an idol-training school ever since you were a child and you’ve steadily learnt everything properly starting from the basiCS, Senpai.
That’s why, despite your pathetic image, your singing and dancing are actually quite “stroNG”.
Tsumugi: Oh, this is pretty rare to see you give me a compliment, Natsume-kun.
Natsume: If I kept hitting you all the time, you won’t be sturdy anymore and would end up breakiNG. I’ve got to give you a piece of candy every once in a whiLE.
Anyway, Sora observes that “good part” of you and imitates iT. He looks at when you need to stEP, what sort of expression you should have on your faCE, the angle of your fingertiPS…
How to sing in the right tone for the song, adjusting the tone of our voice to match up with the audienCE – and a lot of other aspects tOO. He perfectly copies it like it’s the most natural thing in the world and then arranges it in his own wAY.
This word has been overused way too much and it’s lost most of its valUE, but if I had to describe Sora in one word, it would be a geniUS.
Tsumugi: What are you saying at this point in time? Sora-kun has always been an outstanding child.
Natsume: You’re rigHT. We’ve had such a special and brilliant treasure in our hands, but we’ve just let it go to waste all this tiME.
The rest of the world probably sees Sora as the youngest child in the weird three-people unit callED “Switch”.
While that is true, he’s more than thAT.
He’s an extraordinary and wonderful child who is by no means inferior, even if he’s being compared to geniuses from ES or Yumenosaki that are like glittering staRS.
The rest of the world doesn’t see him that wAY. That’s our responsibility as the people who were in charge of“Switch” up until todAY.
Tsumugi: Yes. But today will be different. We have the power I gained from ES and the power you gained from Yumenosaki, Natsume-kun.
Let’s turn that into fuel and raise him to the top of the world – we’ll make him shine even brighter than the sun.
Me and you– no, we’ll put all three of our powers together.
Natsume: It’s only a matter of faCT. That’s why we’re holding thIS “Magic Lantern Fest”.
We’ll shine a light on something that was buried in misfortune and show that it’s precious and valuabLE – That’s what this ceremony is fOR.
Tsumugi: Yes. It’s our first performance under Sora-kun’s leadership – we really hope it’ll be a success. We want to make his wish a reality and we want to grant his innocent wish.
In order to achieve that, I’ve actually immaturely abused a bit of my power, you know!
For example, I asked “Knights” to help promote the concert as an apology since they made a mess during “Next Door”!
Natsume: Isn’t that something they should have taken the initiative to do insteAD? That would only be reasonable, rigHT? How arrogant of “Knights” – just because they’re populAR…
Tsumugi: We let them do whatever they want since they’re earning a lot for us, so it’s “even”.
“Double Face” is difficult to use, after all~ We have to make sure “Knights” continues being our top earner.
No. We’ll set things up so that everyone can profit by making the idols in our agency work comfortably…
That’s my job as the vice president.
I don’t have the ability to be shrewd and I can't vigorously cut my way into my surroundings to make a profit like Saegusa-kun, who’s in the same position at CosPro, though.
What I have right now is perfect for me.
I enjoy my life every day. It’s quite fulfilling.
Everyone worries about me and says, “It must be a lot of work”, but this is what I’ve always been wanting to do.
Rather than kicking the enemies away as a hero, I’ll plough away at the fields so that everyone has something to eat every day.
Even if I can’t change the world, I wanted to use the life I’ve desperately protected all this time…
To prevent people from dying from starvation.

Drink Me
Pairing: Terra/Aqua Rating: T Word Count: 6,601
Summary: Aqua drinks a truth potion... Now they're going to have to talk about things.
Read on AO3
A/N: HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!! This is part of an art/fic trade that I'm doing with Moe (@terraswill on Twitter)!! I was so excited to work on this but it was also just... so hard?? We agreed on the trade back in June I think, and it took me this long. xD The timing was perfect though, and when they post their art, I'll edit this to include a link! Moe asked for was something domestic and fluffy (and I'm totally the wrong person to ask but I never back from a challenge dkfjkfjgf), and maybe give Aqua a reason to play a prank. We support a Let Aqua Have Fun 2021 agenda in this house. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. To my angst readers, I hope you find something here you like anyway lmao
~*~*~*~*~
She says she’s annoyed with me because I won’t let her dust the tapestry. Or rather, I won’t let her have her
way
and take on this ugly monstrosity (which I think is supposed to depict an ancient Keyblade Master who died four-hundred years ago; at this point, the threads are too faded to give him a defined face).
The truth has more layers than that, something I don’t like to talk about. But it’s a clear day, the sun beaming through our windows and igniting the castle in golden hues. I won’t find the time to mope when Aqua is beckoning me to give her the feather duster.
Aqua is a lot shorter than me. I pretend to give it to her, only to swerve it around her face and hang it up high above her head. I’ve got a smirk to last me hours, and there’s a sly one pulling on her lips.
“Maybe if you jump,” I say, wiggling it.
She doesn’t move. “Terra.”
I pull it up higher. “Come get it.”
“Or you could stop trying to overcompensate and let me help you.”
“Who says that’s what I’m doing?” That’s exactly what I’m doing. Any chance I get, I’ll do it all to make up for lost years. If she says she’ll tidy the garden tomorrow, I’ll rip the weeds by dawn. If she wants to prepare a feast, I’ll organize the ingredients, the recipes, the appliances. I call it helping out. She calls it ridiculous.
“You’re ridiculous,” she says. Yep.
“It’s not like you could reach the top anyway,” I say, knowing this is precisely what would set her off.
Aqua likes to present herself as proper: head tall, ankles together. But when I push her buttons, that’s the first mask to melt off. She lunges at me, chest to chest, aiming for the duster that’s balancing on the tips of my fingers, my elbow locked and shoulder riding as high as it can, as if I’m trying to clean the ceiling. We’re giggling, we’re tight, we’re children all over again.
“Give it,” she says, her eyebrows and lips twisted in feverish concentration. She’d never let anyone else see her behave this way.
“What are you doing?” She steps onto my shoes to gain height and I have to wrap my free arm around her waist to keep our balance (not that I’d complain if she ends up landing on top of me). My heart is pounding stupid rhythms at the smell of her shampoo. I don’t like sweet, but I like it on her.
“Master’s orders. Give it to me.”
“Try harder.”
She inhales sharply, giving me that Aqua look. Fine. She turns her head towards the tapestry and puckers her lips together, blowing air as if blowing out a candle. The layer of dust that sits at the very top bursts, sprinkling the console table beneath it.
In my shock, she snatches the feather duster, the quietest Hmm of satisfaction coming out loud enough to demand my audience. She taps the tapestry with a flat laundry bat, all while waving her hand over the surface of the table, the dust collecting itself as if swirled by a magnetic tornado.
No use for the duster at all.
“You think you’re clever,” I say, getting close behind her.
“I think you agree.”
I think she’s pretending. Her smile looks the same but it’s manufactured, tied to a puppeteer’s strings. There’s a flicker in her eyes that tells me she doesn’t agree at all. I’m prepared to tell her that she’s assured and confident, but she already knows. This happens: I’ll catch a sudden recognition dawning on her face, like she’s reminding herself of something, and I’m left to guess what it could be.
We’re interrupted by a loud sneeze that drifts from the other side of the hall, followed by a hack and a cough, finishing with a sniffle.
She’s panicked. It sounds like a case of the common cold, and nothing to be worried about, but that’s Aqua. I follow her lead, which takes us to no one else but Ven, who is wiping his face. A faint trace of dust rides on the strands of his hair. Actually, there’s dust everywhere except on the tapestry he’s responsible for.
“Ven!” Aqua gapes. “What happened here?”
He takes a look around the chaos and gives a mere shrug, rubbing the back of his hand on his pants. “I was dusting.”
“You were using magic,” she says like she’s scolding him, despite doing the same minutes ago.
“What did you expect me to do?” He gestures towards the tapestry—the Master’s favorite, of a round cat lounging on a throne and announcing a toast with his goblet—like it’s a mountain to climb. “Get a ladder?”
“What a mess,” Aqua mutters with a flitter of her fingers, shepherding the dust together so it’s easier to collect.
“I’m not finished.”
“Master’s orders,” I say and Aqua doesn’t spare me a glare. Yes, I find that funny.
Ven ushers her aside. “Come on, let me help.”
“I got it,” she says, fixated on the job. Always the one to do and still can’t learn to accept a helping hand.
“Aqua.”
“Ven?”
I know better than to get in the middle of this.
Ven generates gusts of air with a wave of both of his arms—a terrible idea when Aqua’s conducting from the other side—and the dust grows darker into a thick cloud of smoke. He stares at his handiwork with a dropped jaw. I’m shocked too. Where did all of that come from?
Aqua grunts as she tries to calm the storm, Ven mimicking her movements.
“Let it go,” I say, placing my hand on her shoulder.
“It will all fall to the floor.”
“There’s too much pressure building up from the bottom.”
“It’s under control.”
“It’s going to explode.”
She pouts (stars, it’s cute) but of course, only half-listens to me. Moving her palms parallel to the floor, she makes a gesture as if to compress. With Ven slacking, it billows low to the floor and then sweeps up.
The tapestry flaps upward, revealing a door.
Ven’s the first to cough. “What’s that?”
Aqua and I stare at each other. We’ve hidden behind every single one of these tapestries when we played as kids. There shouldn’t be a door.
“Do you think it’s magic leftover from—” I start to ask.
She shakes her head. “It can’t be. I returned everything to its rightful place.”
“Then what is this supposed to mean?”
Discouraged by our hushed tones, Ven stops himself from turning the knob, waiting for our approval.
“It could have been hidden by a spell,” Aqua suggests.
“Oh.”
We’re quiet. Spells last for as long as the spellcaster is alive.
“The Master would have called it an inheritance,” I say. “Don’t you think?”
One by one, we peek into the secret room. Ven is eager to open the door but only pushes it a sliver. It creaks with determination to wake everyone inside. Aqua is second, looking over him. I’m last, searching the corners for signs of movement.
It’s empty except for a rack of white robes, stacks of books on a desk, a chess board, and a forest-colored couch. On the opposite wall sits a huge wardrobe next to a reading stand, displaying an open tome on what may have been the last page the Master read. An old-fashioned wall clock with visible parts and spinning characters counts the time, looking peculiarly like the Land of Departure. The sun shines through a window—though this would be an extra. All the windows on both sides of the castle are accounted for. You wouldn’t be able to see this room from the outside.
“Terra,” Aqua gasps, “look at these books.”
Most of them are titled in an ancient language. “They’re from Scala.”
“We could probably find Sora with these,” she says, flipping through one.
Some of the robes are sewn with patches of snake skin, others stained with faded off-yellow, each a varying size for a growing teenager. I take the largest—it smells like dust—and slip it on. Almost a perfect fit, though I would’ve preferred it longer.
“It looks good on you,” Aqua says, coming to my side.
I smile at the floor, imagining what the Master would have said, how large his smile would have been under that bushy mustache, like the day he gave me his belt buckle and told me it would be a nice touch. Aqua inspects a fraying seam on the shoulder.
“I can fix that,” she whispers. I let her pull it off me, and she dotingly folds it over the book she decides to take with her.
“Whoa.”
We drop our thoughts and turn to Ven, who’s helped himself to the wardrobe, stupefied at shelves of potions in glass flasks. Ugly colors, weirdly shaped, totally bizarre.
“These aren’t any potions I recognize,” Aqua says, placing her stack on the couch and investigating the shelf with her arms crossed.
None of them are labeled. “Maybe they’re lost knowledge,” I say, still thinking about her compliment. How often does she think I look good? “Can you imagine what kind of magic they’re packed with?”
Ven glances at the open book on the reading stand. “Let’s see.”
I join him, watching him flip through crudely drawn illustrations of odd shapes. We both snigger.
“Look through walls,” he reads before turning to the next page. “Neverending sweat. Turn a face blue. Glue lips together… This one says you can unglue them by washing your mouth with soap.”
“Lost knowledge.” Aqua scoffs.
“But who made them?” I ask. “The Master?”
Aqua rolls her eyes. “Please.”
“This is his secret room.”
“It looks like his handwriting,” Ven says, trying to keep his smile tiny. Trying. “Kind of.”
The O’s and the T’s certainly have their curls, just the way Eraqus would have done them. The Y’s are similar too, if a bit exaggerated and large. As Ven turns more pages, all of which are yellowed and chipped at the edges, I realize the drawings match the shapes of different vials, equipped with descriptions of colors.
“I think Ven’s right.”
Aqua throws a look (Forget it) and rolls her eyes again. It’s her favorite thing to do. “We’re talking about the Master here. He wouldn’t waste his time on something like this.”
“I got an idea!” Ven beams, nudging me on the elbow. “Why don’t we try some? Guess what they are before we look in the book?”
The only person who stiffens is Aqua.
“Look at her face.” Ven points. “She thinks we’re savages.”
Aqua doesn’t say anything, but it’s possible.
I cock my head. “If the Master were here, he would have gotten a kick out of this.”
“Terra—”
“Regardless of who made them.”
She drums her fingers on her forearm. “If it makes you happy,” she mumbles. It was subtle, but it was there.
“I’ll go first!” Ven leaps over the reading stand. There’s a rainbow of the most unsavory colors. The neon, the dull, the too realistic. “This one looks perfect.” He grabs a thin vial of liquid that I could mistake for vomit: a faded, rotten lime green, and drinks it all in one swish.
Following the last gulp, he withers to the floor, flailing and begging for it to stop.
I’m searching through the book for an answer.
Aqua throws herself to her knees. “What’s wrong?”
Ven giggles, cradling his stomach then scratching his back. “Don’t touch me.” He gasps in between painful howls of laughter. “It makes it worse.”
She carries his head to her lap anyway. She wouldn’t be Aqua if she isn’t indulging in some deep-seated instinct to assume we’re not healthy before assuring herself that we are.
I tap my finger onto a page. “Tickling potion. ‘Give this to your favorite person,’ it says.”
“I’m going”—Ven inhales—“to bring the Master”—inhales again—“back to life just to… kill him again.” He deteriorates into another round of wheezing, hugging himself tight and turning over into a fetal position.
“It’s too juvenile for the Master,” Aqua reminds me.
This page is written with the same suspicious calligraphy but I hold my tongue. To ease the look of worry on Aqua’s face, I step forward. “My turn.”
“You can’t be serious,” Aqua says.
“Relax. There’s no such thing as death by tickling.”
Aqua jerks to say something but stops herself. I’m guessing, Let me have at it and you’d think otherwise. Nothing that she’d say with Ven in the room.
Ven rubs his eyes and sighs—it’s shaky and long, but it’s an improvement. “Can I try another one?”
The first potion to catch my attention is this wide, stubby one filled with what looks like dark mud.
“Terra.”
Her warning makes me think of the slight possibility of developing diarrhea from this. I stare into her eyes as I swallow a gulp of it anyway, much to her horror and much to my enjoyment. Her expressions are a never-ending list of entertainment.
The potion is too smooth to be mud. It tastes spicy, a kick without any flavor. At first, I don’t feel anything, until a zap of electricity rides up my spine. Gooseflesh covers the backs of my calves up to my neck.
By the time I realize that I’m shivering, Aqua has my face in her hands. Her fingertips are warm when she brushes my hair.
“I’m fine.” A white cloud puffs out of my lips.
Ven is cackling. Not from the tickling, that may have stopped as soon as he got distracted, but he’s pointing his finger at me.
“As fine as a monkey walking naked into the snow,” she quips, wrapping the robe around my shoulders and rubbing my biceps.
“You can’t say, I told you so,” I say, my voice reverberating. “You didn’t know this was going to happen.”
“I know you don’t regret it.”
“You’re right. I don’t.”
She scoffs, smirking. Her eyes drop to some faraway conversation with herself.
“What are you thinking?” My teeth clatter.
She raises her eyebrows, playing coy.
“Whoever made this freezing potion,” Ven interrupts, having dragged himself to the book and is now leaning on it with both hands to stay stable, “wanted to test it. See if it could preserve vital organs.” He slowly nods (as if anything in this book makes sense).
“I guess we’ll find out if it worked when I die.” The tremors hurt, rupturing in blows down my torso. Aqua mutters a spell and a fiery glow halos her hands, hovering near my skin. My own personal hearth. I can’t help but imagine doing the same for her one day.
“Anyone else want to take a crack at it or should I drink another one?” Ven says.
Aqua glances over her shoulder and is actually considering it .
“No way,” I say.
She ignores me, reading each bottle as though they’d spill their secrets.
I lean towards her ear, though she’s already swatting me away. “Do you need help choosing one?”
She grabs a curvy vial that looks like it has hips and is filled to the brim with pure white. Defiantly turning to stick her nose up at me, she proudly drinks (a sip), grimacing through the taste. But she keeps tall. As long as the nose stays up.
“Oh shit,” Ven mutters.
“Language,” I say.
We wait for the effect. Nothing happens.
“What do you feel?” I ask.
“Nothing. I feel normal.”
“You’re a liar,” Ven says, throwing pages and scanning pictures, then rustling back to see if he skipped any.
“I am not. Maybe it’s expired.” As soon as she says it, her eyes go wide.
“That doesn’t make any sense. We had immediate effects. Maybe you should drink some more?”
“Don’t be silly.” Aqua shuts the bottle with its topper and gently places it back in its spot. “This was a foolish game, anyway.”
I have to scoff—that’s harsh, even coming from Aqua. “Then why go for it?”
“Because I admire you so much, Terra, when you’re brave enough to go after something I wouldn’t come near. Because I have to match you, maybe outmatch you sometimes, if you get on my nerves. Because sometimes I get scared that I’ve missed out on so much, and I can’t help but wonder if our childhood may be missing something. After everything we’ve lost, I don’t want to be scared of being silly anymore. But… What if I’m a boring slog? I don’t want to be a bore. I want to be daring and fun like you and Ven,” she says in rapid tossed word salad, her hands getting animated the more she talks, pressed to answer questions we didn’t ask.
Ven and I have nothing to say.
“I…” Aqua fusses with her sleeves. “I don’t know why I unloaded all of that.”
“Dramatic, much?” Ven says.
She fists her hips. “Dramatic is when you whine about your dreams so you can avoid chores thinking I wouldn’t call your bluff.”
Ven gapes. “Aqua, you’re mean.”
“I don’t know what’s happening.” She hides her face behind her hands, taking them to her heart and bowing. “Ven, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean it that way.”
“Something weird is going on.” I take the helm at searching the book, shuffling pages in chunks until I find one with stark white paint, in the shape of curves and waves. “Ven,” I whisper when I read the description. When he looks at me, his impish smile stretches with lists of ideas. I’m right there with him.
A stuffy silence fills the room when we recite it: Truth potion. The person who drinks it cannot help but to answer questions honestly.
Aqua steps back.
She bolts out of the room, knocking some of the books over.
“Get her!” Ven yells.
My muscles protest when I take off, stiff and sluggish as though I’ve experienced a whole winter outside. Aqua dashes through an open doorway and thrusts her arm out. The doors slam together, refusing to let me through. Ven’s going to have to find another way around. This won’t stop me and she knows it. I slip through a growing portal of darkness—the swirls that lick me would have been cold, but I’m numb—and I come out the other side. There’s certain tricks that come from being the poster boy for Darkness; it’s helpful in fights.
This part of the castle leads to the common areas. I know where she’ll be.
Aqua is splitting her attention between mixing batter in a large wooden bowl and running a soapy dishwash in the kitchen sink. When I approach her, she makes a point to put her finger on her lips.
Stars, it’s so hard not to laugh. “You’re not going to—”
She grunts, shaking her head furiously at me. No questions.
With my elbows propped on the countertop, I watch her scrub a dish. More than she normally does, actually, a little therapy session to take her mind off the fact that I’m relishing this moment. It’s satisfying how she suddenly remembers that she’s heating the oven, throwing herself across the kitchen to check the temperature.
She points to the spice cupboard next to me, and gets more enthusiastic when I open it. Apparently, she wants the cinnamon.
“I think vinegar would help better with what you’re doing.” I nod my head to the sink.
With the flick of her hand, water pouring out of the faucet changes direction and splashes me in the face.
“Am I annoying?” I snigger. I had to.
A tick in her shoulders—her body has no choice but to react. “That’s a stupid question.” Every word is pulled out of her teeth. Normally, she’d say, No, how could you even imagine that!
I dip my finger into the suds and plant one large print on her forehead in between the eyes, where she’s glaring so hard, they are crossed.
“How about now?”
“The worst,” she groans, slamming her hands into the bath. She takes a washcloth to dry them and wipes her forehead. Afterwards, she hands it to me.
“Think of it as an opportunity to get to know the real you.” I dry my face.
“You know me already.”
“Do I know everything, though?”
“No.” This potion doesn’t miss a beat.
Ven is panting by the time he enters, climbing a stool behind the counter and peering over the edge like a small child. He’s doing that on purpose, goading her into playing along. He asks me, “Can we?”
She groans.
I’m back on my elbows so I can look up at her and give her the same puppy dog eyes. Between glancing at the two of us, she can’t stand it. She wants to make us happy, she’s always been like that. Then again, she probably also wants to bash our heads together and leave us with headaches. One of the two would amuse her better.
“How about we ask her three questions only? We shouldn’t drive her crazy.”
She chuckles, that little smile of hers growing and reassuring and there. That’s my girl. Turning off the sink, she folds the washcloth and brings her hands together as though we’re in class. “Three questions each. Is that okay?”
Wow. “More than I asked for.”
“I already have one,” Ven says, sitting on his knees. “Do you hate Lea?”
“A little. But I’m working on it.”
Ven snorts and drops his face onto the counter. How many times have we asked her that and got the, Don’t be ridiculous. Like I said, he’s formidable. “I knew it.”
“He does his missions with the least amount of effort possible. Takes the easiest route to build his technique. Efficiency, he calls it,” she says, letting out the hot pressure she’s been keeping to herself with relief. “He also calls me, Teach. Who does that?”
Of all the times I’ve expected Aqua to snap at someone, she holds herself back when it comes to Lea, giving him tight smiles to zip it all up. “Ouch,” I say. “He’s been working so hard on a gift to thank you for working with Isa.”
She grimaces. “At least he has good taste in men? Isa does have a respectable work ethic.”
I pat her hand. Aqua’s usually the one to blow the kettle first, but there’s ways to connect people who may not see eye to eye the first time. Maybe I can be a buffer. “Next time you meet, I could go with you.”
“I’d appreciate that,” she whispers.
“Lea would find it hilarious, honestly.” Ven waves his hand as if it’s no big deal. “I bet he’d give you a note with your gift. It would say, Thanks for everything. I hate you, too, Teach .”
“Okay, my turn,” I say, resting my chin on my palm. She studies me, too, though I’d like to believe I could keep a poker face. “Do you sometimes steal my cologne?”
“Yes.”
Her bluntness throws me back. “To wear ?”
“Yes,” she says as though it’s obvious and crosses her arms. Duh.
“Hey, that’s two questions,” Ven says.
“Sorry.” I take one more glance to see if I could gleam any more clues from her facial expressions, but she keeps her nose high. As long as the nose stays up.
“I have to think of a really good one.” Ven holds his chin, looking more serious than he’s been since the Keyblade War. “Ever farted then blamed Terra for it?”
“Ugh.” Aqua quivers, her knuckles bleaching. She throws her face over her shoulder and stares scars into the wall. “Yes of course, didn’t we all?”
“Come on, I could’ve answered that,” I say (though after all these years, it’s validating to know it’s not a blame game anymore). I nudge her with my shoulder. “Justice does feel pretty good.”
“Ask me something better,” she says after smacking my bicep. Her face is as ripe as sunburn.
Questions that give her more control. I could do that. “Is there anything you’ve been needing to say but haven’t had the chance to yet?”
The tension in her face drops. It leaves something pale and disappointed in its place, a faraway look. I shouldn’t have asked; whatever this fear is, it’s meant for me. “Yes,” she whispers.
I stand pin-straight, the air in the room thinning, as though the Darkness has opened a hole and is sucking all the sun away. Ven does the same. The other Keybearers will stare at their cuticles, or fumble and cut themselves out of the group when they’re upset or hurt or sorry. Eraqus forged a protocol out of us. When we witness or cause harm, we recite what we’ve done and its effects. We bow when we apologize.
So far, we’ve been home for one hundred and seventy five days. Never expected it to take this long. I open my mouth to speak.
“Don’t,” she says softly. “I know what you’re going to ask.”
I would have pleaded with her to let me apologize, and I would have met her dismissal anyway: No, Terra, it’s not necessary. We’ve been through it all. We should enjoy what we have. She means well; the relaxation and the mundane tasks are good for all of us. Even when we were younger, Aqua was generous at her expense, sparing nuts from her brownie to bake them into a tarte, knowing I hate brownies. She’d look at the brighter side of things (More fudge for me!), and stick her tongue out. She’s been my smile, but she gives too much, and we still need this conversation.
“So what is the answer?”
She lowers her eyes to the counter, then wills them back up at me. “I blame myself.”
Aqua.
Ven sighs. “I should give you guys some space.” He treads away, keeping his footsteps minimal, meticulously turning the handle so it’d make the least noise possible. Out of the corner of my eye, though, I see him press his ear against the door before it shuts. If he’s going to listen in, that’s fine with me. Whatever she and I have to say to each other would affect all three of us.
“You blame—”
“I would be… lying.” She simpers, shaking her head. “If I said I never blamed you. There were moments I did. How and why. But I had enough endless nights where those reasons circled back to me. What I could have done to make it better. To save you,” she croaks, wiping her eyes. “To be a best friend. You needed that. Ven needed one, too. And I wasn’t.”
Aqua scrubs the already-clean counter with that dry washcloth, creating a rhythm that fills the silence. The oven is now heated, and I take the cinnamon and pour two spoonfuls of it into a beaker, our backs to each other. Add cups of sugar for her, some cocoa, a pinch of vanilla while she drills the grouts in between the tiles.
“I wasn’t much of a best friend myself, either.”
“You were hurt and defeated.”
“I was stupid.”
“You are not.”
I scoff, reaching over and pausing her. My smile is meant to be gentle, but it feels so plastic. “Aqua, do you think I’m stupid?”
“I don’t.”
I’ve expected her to half-smirk, where she tells me, Sometimes. “Really?”
“You overthink,” she simply puts. “But you assume the best. You know, that makes you a better person than me.”
Ha. No. “No. I’m not better than you. Not by a long shot.”
She hums. “I’m just correct more often.”
“But I left you.”
“And I kicked your trust in me in the shins. Are we going to keep count of all the unfriendly things we’ve done? How different would it have been if I didn’t accuse you of things that weren’t true?”
“How different would it be if I had just stayed with you?” I realize I shouldn’t have asked the moment I finish.
In a trance, Aqua inspects the beaker with the spices and sugars I’ve concocted, deciding what I’d done is good enough and dumping them into her unmixed dough, stirring, giving her hands something to do, while I wait for the onslaught. “Probably avoided the last twelve years.” I wince. “Or it could have made no difference. We could have ended up the same, or worse, or better.”
I say, “You don’t believe that,” before stopping myself.
“I was taught to respect Xehanort, too.”
“We were taught to recognize the Darkness.”
“Which I also failed at.”
“Clearly.”
“I did. I looked for it inside you where I should have placed my faith instead. I regret every moment I did.” She puts the bowl down, a slap of wood against marble. “We don’t help ourselves by obsessing about it a million times.”
“But you’d help me if you let me apologize. To you especially.”
She whips around with nothing to retort, fresh tears short of falling. “To me especially?”
“Ven deserves something of his own. Please.”
She drops her hands together. Swallows. Nods.
I bow, watching droplets land near my shoes. “I should have been there for you. I should have been stronger. I should have realized what was happening sooner, and I thought I did. I thought I did what I could, and I was there with you in the Graveyard, but it wasn’t enough, and for all the years I didn’t know, I should have found a way to learn and pay you back for what you’ve sacrificed for me. I should have eased your pain, I should have brought you back to the Light. I was focused on myself when I should have lifted you up, and I disappeared when you needed me most. I should have done more, and I’m sorry I didn’t.”
Silence passes the time and I look up to see what she thinks. She’s wetting the washcloth, dabbing my eyes. “Do you feel better?” she asks.
“Kind of.” I’m beat up after taking all those shots, but I’m lighter, free to breathe without the nagging suspicion that I don’t deserve to.
“One of the things I wished for when I was in the Realm of Darkness was to smell sugar again. I wanted to hear you give me a list of reasons why it’s bad for my body, and I wanted to tell you why it’s good for the heart.” I let her dab my cheeks, the dampness frigid against my skin. “Now that I’m back home, I don’t need any other wish granted.” She sniffs, about to pour the batter into its mold, but then flicks the oven off exasperatedly. “I forgot. I have to wait for the dough to rise.” For some reason that finally breaks her. It tears me apart as well, and I have to hold her shoulder so we don’t rip down the middle.
“Please don’t cry,” I say, offering the washcloth. “I care too much about you to sit here and watch you cry.”
She stops. “What is that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing.” I let go and stare at her blended mix, smooth as cream.
“That’s not fair,” she says, throwing the washcloth onto the counter. “I have no choice with what I say. You could at least answer me honestly.”
“I don’t want to be the reason you cry anymore.” Nor do I want to tell her the truth. Instead I hide it on the back of my neck, where I rub into it so it doesn’t spill over. And yet, that makes me feel more guilty now than I have in weeks.
“I should make you swallow a truth potion.”
“I wanted us to be equals.” She saves her usual response and waits for me to continue. I close my eyes. “Go through all the same experiences with you. We were supposed to stick together, do everything together. Failing the Mark of Mastery took all of that away from me. Or at least it felt that way at the time. And I wanted more. I wanted…” My hand finds nothing as it waves in the air searching for the words to spell it out. “I don’t know what to say. Everything I’ve done and didn’t do pale in comparison to you.”
“We’re not doing this. We’re not comparing ourselves.”
“No, I mean…” What the stars am I supposed to say? “You’re more important to me than you understand.”
“And you’re just as important to me.”
“No… it’s different with me.” And I’ve said too much, Aqua holding her elbows and expecting me to continue. There’s no other trail to go down than the one I’ve started. “I meant what I said at the preliminary feast.”
“Excuse me?”
The feast where the Master celebrated our achievements, announcing that we’re at last ready for the final test. Where Ven and I squeezed ourselves into suits and he complained the entire night about being itchy. Where I spent it staring at her dress. When I said she looked pretty and then avoided her for the rest of the party.
I don’t say anything about that night and she hears something anyway.
“That’s why…” She glosses over me with wide eyes as the realization makes me look like a stranger. “You should have said something to me.”
“You can’t be serious.” I wave her away.
“But all these years, I didn’t know.”
Good, if we’re talking about the same thing. “I couldn’t have told you anything.”
“Then how was I supposed to figure that out?”
What are we talking about now? “What exactly did you expect me to do?”
“You should have kissed me.” She covers her mouth, wincing at what slipped out. She keeps her chin high anyway, casually crossing her arms and pretending that her face hasn’t reddened the deep shade staining her cheeks. As long as it stays up.
We pass an unspoken conversation between each other, frozen and unwilling to move.
Did you just—?
I did.
I manage to exhale. “You’re right.”
There’s a moment of shock on her face before I hold her and lean forward. It happens so quick that I don’t register what she tastes like before I realize that I’m clamping my hands on her biceps, two bent rods leaning on each other.
“That was awful,” I say.
“No, it’s—” she laughs.
“Bad.”
“Yeah.”
“I always thought it’d go different.”
“Always?”
Well, I’ve run out of words. “I guess.” When I let her go, she reaches for my chest and lifts onto her toes, kissing me back but with care and intention this time, filling my lips with hers. They taste like Aqua, smell like her shampoo. They’re softer than her hands and face, sweet enough for me to want more. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with my hands until I settle them in the sway of her back. I let her take the lead, take another kiss, tug at my neck. She trembles from the frozen touch of my skin and from the hold of my hands on her body. My muscles are getting warm, too warm but I like it and I think she knows. Earlier this morning, I held her this close, but this is closer. It’s easy and difficult at the same time.
Then I remember and pull away. “Ven is listening to us.”
There’s a bump on the door as it’s pushed when he kicks himself off, heavy footsteps running down the hall.
Aqua looks like she’s touched feces. “Ven!”
I follow her, wondering if she’s going to summon her Keyblade but that’s because of how fast she’s walking, like she has a mission, no Heartless left standing. We turn a corner, down a hall of antique vases and ancient cupboards carved from our first masters. Wood creaks nearby.
She holds her palm up like she’s holding a chalice, and flames lick the cupboard closest to us until it rattles and spits Ven out. He scrambles onto his feet and brandishes his finger, testing our distance as if he’d poke us in a duel.
“I still have my last question and it’s in your best interest not to threaten me.”
“Oh really? Tell me again how you’re going to protect yourself when you sleep,” she says.
He grounds himself before giving his performance of, “Do you want to see Terra naked?”
Aqua trembles from her head to her knees, her cheeks blotting a strong shot of red. She throttles forward and cups both of her hands onto her mouth like she’s going to sneeze. What sounds like a loud goose honk blows out as the answer.
“That was awesome.” Ven slaps his thigh, turning on his heel and leaving a trail of giggles.
I’m scared to say anything, in case she honks at me. So I wait. There’s just no way to make myself seem small, or leave without disturbing her. Maybe if I hold my breath, she’d feel like she has privacy. She’s panting, giving me side glances but never looking directly at me, that nose of hers wilting towards the floor.
I open my mouth to say something—
She growls and I clutch my lips together. Aqua pulls her Gummiphone out of her pocket, jabbing a message.
Mine rings.
 Aqua
Let’s find a potion that dyes his hair pink
She clears her throat, before flipping it over and typing again.
 Aqua
Don’t tell him it was my idea
“Okay,” I say, testing the word. Even though I soften it, it still bangs like a gong. I don’t know what else to do except smile at her. She grimaces back, no doubt the last several words spoken still ringing in her ears, just as they do in mine. I even hesitate when I hold her elbow—would it ever be the same, or will every touch mean something different? I don’t voice those questions.
She moves by reflex: first to flinch, then to hold me by my elbow, mirroring me, which isn’t the most comfortable position. She follows my forearm to my hand, knitting our fingers together, and we stand there, adjusting how they fit. Mine are long and thick, dwarfing and burying hers, an oversized pouch for a gem. They fit perfectly, I think.
“We can find something better,” I say, looking for anything to distract her. “There’s also those books to read, and the robe to fix. The brownies you’re making—”
“It’s supposed to be cinnamon bread,” she mumbles.
Yech. “Nothing I’d eat anyway.”
Her chuckle is partial, contorted and pressed.
“I can make some beef jerky for everyone. Spice it up,” I say. She hides an amused whimper behind her hand and massages her cheek. “We don’t have to talk about anything you don’t want to.”
She nods, offering me a relieved but crooked smile.
I don’t know if we should walk the castle hand in hand, so I splay it between her shoulder blades and lead the way. We walk in silence, and I’m okay with that if it helps her. No questions, her head up high like everything is back to normal. We steal glances and do a terrible job at hiding our giggles behind small talk, which is botched and jittery anyway, but there’s not much to say without asking, So… how old were you when you realized?
One of these nights, I’ll tell her I’d like to see her naked, too, when the time is right and the truth comes easier.

Monday 31/5/21 - Identifying with your Videogame Proxy Character
Videogames offer a unique experience over other story-telling media forms because the player is in charge of the character, and influences how they interact with the world. But controlling the character is not the same as becoming the character. Different gamers may have a different experience across different videogames, in regards to how they view themselves participating in the world of the game.
Tumblr media
Pictured: A Gamer
So today, I asked myself, some close friends, and polled twitter:
Is the videogame protagonist an extension of yourself?
The first question I asked the class was how you identify with a character that already has a name and backstory. Sure, when you're reading a book or watching a movie, you may see some of yourself in the main character, but ultimately, you are rooting for them on the side-lines.
Many videogame characters, say for example, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, have pre-established goals, motivations and often full personalities, BUT we direct their moment to moment actions. So do people see themselves as the character, or is it still watching as a bystander? I queried my friends on this with the following Poll:
Is it me, or Mario?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Super Mario Galaxy 2, 2010
Overwhelmingly, everyone voted that they are controlling Mario. Sure the experience they are having in the world is theirs, but Mario is not this world's version of them, he is simply a puppet, a vessel in which they drive their actions through. The main character is not me, its Mario. When we discussed this part further, my friends also added that in games where the main character is an established character, but nameable, such as many Final Fantasy or Legend of Zelda games, this did not change their perspective of their place in the world. Yes I may call Link "Mitchell", but I am simply along for the ride of Mitchell the Hylian's story; we may share a name, but they're still a different entity.
Who is your character?
Next, I asked my friends if the answer changes if the character is a blank-slate and also customisable. In World Simulation games such as Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley, or Free-Roam Adventure games such as Skyrim or Cyberpunk, your character, how they look, behave, grow and specialise, is all up to the player.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Animal Crossing New Horizons, 2020
The response was a bit complicated on this one.
One friend used Pokémon as example on how self-insert characters work for them. The trainer that they control and run around with is not them. It is a character separate to them who they are in charge of. BUT, the Pokémon they use are their Pokémon, it is just the proxy trainer they control who commands them. Another friend used farm sims such as Stardew Valley to express a similar opinion. The character they play as is not them; but the farm, the crops, livestock belong to the player, not the character.
Tumblr media
Pokémon Sword/Shield, 2019
So to summarise, Mitchell is just a Pokémon Trainer who shares my name, but the Pokémon Mitchell uses are mine. That is my Mudkip, not Mitchell the Pokémon Trainer's Mudkip, he just uses them.
I would say that in very few games, I do consider myself to be the main character, but Animal Crossing is the only example I'd personally use. Echoing that statement my friend said earlier, the island, the landscaping, and taste in décor, they are all of my design. But even if I can't say the Villager I control is a 1-1 Animal Crossing me, they are as close as I'll get to myself in the game.
How do you make your character?
Tumblr media
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, 2011
The last query I asked my friends about is when you do have varied character customisation in front of you, do you try to make yourself in the game, or do you create something else entirely? I didn't use a poll for this one, since the range of responses was sure to vary.
In most cases, the responses seemed to push towards using character creation to just design a character that looks cool. One of my friends said that if there are options to make a character look like himself, he will only do so if the game specifies in-game that this is "you, the player", but he will still consider this character separate to himself. Just a look-alike he controls. But most often, given the tools, he would choose to "just make characters think look cool or dumb as hell."
Tumblr media
Bloodborne, 2015
As an artist, I use the term OC, or Original Character, a lot. And even if it is a bit out of context here, I have likened my friend's use of character creators as a way to make OCs. Games like Darksouls and Skyrim have the tools to make the player character a total rad-looking badass or maybe the ugliest MF on the planet. Why obey reality when fantasy has so many more options?
Since a lot of the time spent in Action-Adventure games is spent looking at a character's back, why wouldn't I give my character a look/outfit that accentuates their butt? Another friend said that she's never interested in making a character into herself, "I make someone super pretty with the big boobs". I myself hand-picked my Monster Hunter character's physical attributes and fashion outfit to look as cool and cute as i could. And then I treat her like I would any other Art OC.

My drawing of my Hunter (Left)
In Conclusion
If the character has a name and backstory, players see themselves in control of them, but do not put themselves in their boots at all.
If the character is name-able and customisable, then in general, players will still say that character is not them, they just control them. But the actions and possessions of that custom character are owned more by the player.
When players have the choice to make a character look however they want, rarely will people make themselves, rather they'll make an original character who's as cool or ugly or sexy as their imagination and the tools given allow.
Thankyou for taking the time to read my little case-study on Proxy Characters and Self-Recognition of their Players.

The Realization of Importance
Part (3/3)
Let’s end it.
A/N:  This is to say that all the characters and the main story line belong to Voltage Inc. Only the fictional story is a work of mine, as well the fictional characters, Hana, Touma and Akari. Also this story is based on dream event, because I had this as a dream many days ago. It might be a little different from the usual genre, a little more angsty, so this little girl wants to know your honest opinions about the work. Be honest and do let me know what you think. But, if it feels a little bit dreamy or weird, you can discontinue reading from here.
Part 1 II Part 2
                                                      Part 3/3
Tumblr media
Hana: ?!
Standing behind me was none other the man I loved the most, Kasumi. But, why is he here? His face is looking as cool as a cucumber. And, is he smiling? I hurriedly get up from my seat.
Hana: Kas- Err, I mean Chief Kasumi! What are you doing here?
Kasumi: Listening to your conversation.
Hana: ...I- Well, I am not MC.
Turning my head where I put the hairpin to his side, I show him my ‘recognition symbol’ or whatever.
Hana: I am Hana, the new resident.
Kasumi: I know that.
Hana: ?
Why? Just as I am trying to focus on my work, why does he drop such lines? What work has he with me? I rack my brains for a possibility.
Hana: Oh, are you here to talk with Touma?
Tucking on my white coat and holding me like a scared child, Touma slowly ducks his head to the side. I knew that Kasumi loved children, like he played pictionary with Sora that time. So I decide to give it a try.
Hana: Touma, he is the head of EICU, Dr. Kasumi. You can talk to him. He really is good person. Oh yeah, we might play pictionary together!
Kasumi: ...
Probably not expecting the response, Kasumi’s eyes go wide. Did I say something wrong? Wait, don’t say me... This event has already happened here already. If that’s the case, I might be in knee deep water right now.
Hana: I thought that Touma might like to draw, since he is good at gardening and sightseeing, so I asked. That’s it.
Kasumi: Touma, I know you can do it. And as she said, we can play pictionary anytime you want. But, I have a request to make.
Touma: What is it?
Kasumi: Can I accompany you to the visit to your garden?
Hana: What?!
Okay. I seriously need to check my mental health now. Am I really in my senses? What in the world did I hear just now?
Hana: But, we shouldn’t trouble you. After all, your schedules might be packed. And what about Dr. MC?
Kasumi: She has a lot of study to do. Besides, I want to see how this resident handles the case.
So it was just as a mentor... I see. Although I would have felt pangs in my heart at this time, I feel relieved, although I don’t know why.
Touma: I would be happy to!
After finishing our drinks, I drop Touma to his bed, and go towards the CSD (Cardiovascular Surgery Department). But, Dr. Kasumi is following me. I was sure that was not the case at first, as both CSD and EICU were in the same direction. But, instead of turning to the opposite side in the fork, he turns in my direction. WHAT IS GOING ON?! Oh god, stop, my heart...
Hana: Dr. Kasumi, I need to ask something. Do you have any work at the CSD? I can help you out with the menial tasks, if you ask.
Kasumi: ...
The silent intimidation! His dark prince cape never slides from him!
Kasumi: I need you to meet me in the outside in the evening. I have something to discuss with you.
...aand, there he goes, not listening to me. And, why the heck is he calling me to join him in the evening? The more I try to clear out my mind, the more it becomes tangled with his words. Guess I have no choice left. Maybe it’s something related to Touma?
Hana: ...Alright.
[Evening: Seimei Medical University Porch]
Tumblr media
As I am sitting on the bench after completing the post OP rounds of some patients, a chilled can of coffee hits my cheek.
Kasumi: Here.
Holding two cans of coffee in his hands, he gives me one, and takes a seat beside me. Surprisingly, it’s my favorite flavor, mocha.
Hana: So, what is it that you wanted to talk about?
Kasumi: ...
Gazing at the children playing at a distance, he remains silent.
Hana: Dr. Kasumi, I am not a psychic that I can read your mind by telepathy. You have got to say something.
This time also, the response is nothing. Giving up, I look up at the sky, which is painted with a hue of orange and yellow. Gradually, the Sun sets, leaving a pinkish violet band spread in the horizon.
Hana: Look, Dr. Kasumi, the Belt of Venus! Now, you have to say the reas-
What leaves my mouth leaves me surprised. Clasping my mouth with my hand in order to shut it, I slowly move my fingers around the coffee can.
Kasumi: MC.
Hana: Dr. MC? What happened to her? Is she busy today?
Kasumi: You are MC, right? And that name ‘Hana’ is just a false one. Am I wrong?
Hana: You are getting it all wrong, Dr. Kasumi. Look at this hairpin, I am the new resident, not MC...
Kasumi: And what if I say that the hairpin you are wearing is the one you bought when you went to the zoo with me?
I can’t even dare to say a word. What exactly am I supposed to say? That “I am MC, I don’t know what’s going on here” ? I try to push another excuse.
Hana: This hairpin is common here! I think that Dr. MC may also have one at her home. Look, Dr. Kasumi, you might need some rest as you may be overexerting yourself. I will go and inform Dr. Kyogoku, okay?
As I get up from the bench, a sudden grab of my arm makes me stop.
Hana: ?
Kasumi: At least let me justify why I think of you as the MC.
Why those pure eyes? Was his pull not enough? Those eyes are my weakness, and I can’t resist his words.
Hana: Ok, I will listen to you.
Kasumi: Until yesterday, I was unsure myself that which one of you was my MC. The way you said that you are a new resident, all of us had no choice but to believe it as the truth. But when I saw you talking with Touma, that made me clear of your identity. Because my MC is a little childish, likes to get acquainted with patients, and...
Hana: and?
Kasumi: No wonder where you are, I can always recognize you.
His fingers intertwine with mine, and as I am about to reply, Kyogoku comes from the building.
Kyogoku: Kasumi, we have got hold of her true identity.
Without any delay and without loosening his hand, he drags me with him, and we all leave for the EICU. My mind which had turned to mess after all the things he said, was not working at all, so I stay silent to know the truth.
[Evening: Seimei University EICU]
Tumblr media
There was she, Dr. MC. All the other doctors were also there. But, why were people from Metro Police Department standing there? And that to, handcuffing her? What the heck was going on while I was outside? Just as I was thinking, a police speaks up.
Police 1: Finally, this miscreant got caught.
Police 2: We are sorry for all the trouble she caused. We will make sure she gets the ‘reward’ for what she had done.
Police 3: Thank you for the help doctors! No wonder you all are jewels! Now, give us the permission to leave.
What the WHAT?! No one was in shock as me. She, A MISCREANT? So, inso and dreaming were not the reason?
Hosho: I am glad to see our MC back!
Takado: Oh, and how foolish of us to think that the silent impostor was this idiot. Never in life.
Ekuni: She didn’t even falter when we threw jokes on her.
Matsunaga: And here I thought, we are going to get two talented doctors... Although I am happy that you are the only precious girl of the EICU.
Kyogoku: Butthead, now you know who you are right?
{A/N: Now, Hana is the actual MC, so no need to use the fake name, otherwise who knows what will Kasumi think of me... ^^;)
MC: God, can anyone please explain what is going on... I might just pass out from the overdose of information.
Kyogoku: Apparently, she was a die-hard fan of Kasumi, or whatever it may be, and was super jealous of you. So she arranged all of this. Went through a plastic surgery to look exactly like you, changed your documents by adding a false name, just to take your place.
MC: Then, how you all figured it out?
Hosho: It was Kasumi who first told us that something was weird.
Takado: That how the office, which is a place of damn banters, was as silent as the sea. Although it was peaceful, it felt wrong.
Ekuni: She didn’t know her own schedule of scrub ins, and didn’t lash us out.
Matsunaga: And most importantly, I was not satisfied her response when I asked her to join me during breaks.
Kasumi: We all are aware of your behavior and your nature, so it was not long till we figured it out.
Kasumi: MC?
Ha... haha, my life. I will not hesitate to say that it is more intense than what happens in mangas. One can do this much only for jealousy?
MC: Thank god, thank god you all remember me. Here I thought I was in a parallel world and no one recognised me.
The doctors could sometimes lead me to release smoke from my ears out of fury, but nonetheless, they cared for me, and that’s what of value to me the most.
[Some days later: Touma’s garden]
Tumblr media
{A/N: Again, a random picture}
Touma’s surgery is a success. On the day of the surgery, Kasumi volunteered to accompany me in it, as his schedule was open for the morning. The good thing is that he can still walk and talk, although now in wheelchair for some days of recovery. Me and Kasumi, to fulfill our promise to Touma, were leaded to Touma’s garden on the day we paid a home visit to him.
Can I say that the place is paradise? Tulips, lilies, hydrangeas, pansies, daffodils and all the varieties are lined in rows. Adjoining to it is the fruit garden, and beside it is the vegetable one. Huh, did I even know how to plant a sapling when I was of his age? Answer: no.
As I was appreciating the beauty sitting on the cool grass, a small flower is tucked into my hair. It is a Syringa Vulgaris. In other words, a small lilac.
Touma: This looks pretty on you.
MC: Oh, thank you Touma.
But, just after that, a flower crown is placed on my head.
Kasumi: And I think this looks even prettier.
MC: ...
My cheeks flare up crimson. Aww, just how cute are these two, adoring me like that! I can just float in the sky out of happiness,
MC: Thank you.
MC: Oh, but I wanted to ask something.
Kasumi: Sure.
MC: If you realized that I was the original piece, then why didn’t you recognize me in the office?
Kasumi: That’s because the other you submitted your reports just before you came. Did you notice that when you were about to submit the papers in your hand, it was not the original but only blank papers?
MC: ...No! Now that I think about it, I was so heartbroken at that time, that I didn’t even glance at it. And probably, she might have done it when I was in post OP rounds, and my documents were all laying on the table. Ah, the headache I felt there might be due to her making me unconscious using chloroform, because I found myself in the closet. God! And here I was thinking that I fainted due to overwork!! That chick, grrr...
Kasumi: Pfft, as expected.
MC: Don’t laugh at me! Well, how did you find the clue then? Even I was confused of my own identity. Didn’t your thoughts waver?
Kasumi: I got the first hint by the hairpin you had. I was pretty sure that it was the same one that you bought when we went to the zoo, and that you always kept it in your bag. But when I asked the other you about this, she just made excuses that she had left it at home. Further, you mentioned about Sora and also exclaimed when the Belt of Venus appeared, so my confirmation was strengthened.
MC: A prodigy you are, aren’t you?
Kasumi: No.
MC: Huh?
Kasumi: No matter which different identity you own, or wherever you may be, I can always recognize you, because you are the most important person to me in my life.
Seeing my blank face, he chuckles and a soft touch lands on my lips, like a feather fluttering on my skin.
MC: The same goes for me too. I can always recognize you anywhere, because you are the one I love the most.
As I see the dandelions dancing in the wind, the flowers, fruits and vegetables bathed with sunlight, and the smile of Kasumi, which I yearn the most, I realize something. That I am important to him and so is Kasumi to me. No matter whatever may come, I will always stay by his side, and support him with all my heart.
~
END.
{Author’s trivia: I actually woke up just after the scene where Kasumi realizes that she is his MC. So, I just added the after plot, to complete it.}
That’s it! I am telling you, I was myself feeling butterflies when writing the end part. So I am sure, the story will appeal you just like it appealed to me. Pure nature of Kasumi, dipped in honey felt words. But gahh, it felt so dramatic, the police and all... Let me know what you think. If any requests, feel free to drop it in the suggestion bowl. Have a good day ahead, and give your best everyday, just like our dark prince!
