As time went, Edo hairstyles became more and more intricated. Hairdos were set using plenty of styling products, like 梳き油 sukiabura (creamy pomade) or 付け油 tsukeabura (solid pomade). Many recipes existed, varying in bases (like 椿油 tsubakiabura/camellia oil, 菜種油nataneabura/canola oil, 木蝋 mokurô/sumac wax etc.) and fragrances used.

Once set, hairstyles did not fell apart easily, but the oils used meant hair easily caught dust or dander - hence why people used tenugui or other kinds of hoods to protect their hair (see those past notes 1 / 2):

In the past, washing one's hair was usually done once or twice per month (in the meantime, to relieve itchy scalp, people often used hairpins to scratch without unraveling hairdo!).

Dirt and wax were washed off using hot water and shampoo made from dried 布海苔 funori (a type of red algae) and うどん粉 udonko (wheat flour). You can see here an attempt at recreating the mix.

Then, hair was allowed to dry naturally (taking care of not catching a cold in freezing weather!).

I’m really really proud of where I got my hair after the PP hair loss shit show 🥲

Bald spots + a terribly too short cut at 6 months PP sent me on a mission. I will regrow this mane to its former glory, IDC how much it costs 😅

I did a rosemary mint oil + gua sha for months (Mielle @ Target) and it was honestly great 👍🏽

For almost a year though, I’ve had my eye on this oil by Ranavat.

It’s a Se Asian, woman owned company. The CEO shows you her hair transformation from PP after 2 pregnancies to now at 41 and it’s like 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

But even after a year of monitoring this product I’m just so annoyed by the price. I was ready to buy it as a Xmas gift to myself but figured I should look up the ingredients and see if I can replicate it. Turns out it’s only 3 ingredients! I would love to support this company if I had this kinda dough to spend on hair oil but I don’t. So! Going to make my own and give to my clients too 🫶🏽

For $30, I can probably make like 8 bottles worth of this $70 (per 1.7oz) hair serum 👌🏽✨

Oiling my hair is something I've really gotten into- it really nourishes your scalp and hair- preventing dryness and flaky-ness.

using a serum after each wash ensures easy de-tanglement and leaves your hair shiny and smooth!

using a mask once a week is really good for length retention - i use a bonding complex once a week which has really helped in decreasing split ends so i trim my hair lesser! normal masks help in keeping your hair healthy and nourished, try to avoid these on your scalp as they can cause oily-ness which can lead to dandruff.

which brings me to a good anti dandruff shampoo- one with ketoconazole as the main ingredient. this will treat your dandruff at the root- the yeast that builds up causing flakiness.
