i have a lot of bones to pick this chapter and i will get to that but i'm still really pressed by how rachel depicts kronos apparently grieving having to kill hera in her vision
Tumblr media
rachel does this really gross thing where at some point in the narrative, she'll have the male abuser depict some kind of sadness in regards to his female victim, but it is not remorse. it really reads like whitewashing the abuse itself because "can't you see how upset the abuser is that he has to do this :("
apollo got that really disgusting pov chapter talking about his perspective on persephone after raping her and that was bad enough, but then you also see kronos and his relationship with hera being sanitized or even shipped, when hera said verbatim that he abused her and she did not want to sleep with him, she had hoped she could just charm him. the narrative explicitly points out that kronos is a chronic abuser - he kills or severely injures rhea in a fit of rage after using all her powers, he frequently drives away any nymph or consort who approaches him, and he spends who knows how long mentally torturing hera.
there's another essay tucked into that but i just find it so fucking egregious that rachel wants to portray kronos as being upset he has to kill hera because of his own feelings for her, when the fact of the matter is he is choosing to kill her, just like he chose to kill rhea, and swallow his sons, and tear hera in half. depicting an abuser (a serial abuser, in this case) as being upset over an action he's choosing to do for his own benefit is ... a choice, and a disturbing one. why are we centering the abuser in a sympathetic light when he is still ultimately abusing someone???

Chapter 29: The Gods of the Dead
The high-vaulted halls of the House were quiet when Megaera returned from her shift. She cast a glance towards the throne, and, upon seeing it empty, sighed. Lord Hades had returned a few times since their last all-hands meeting, but rarely for long, and the paperwork on his desk had piled up into a small mountain. Nyx was not in her usual niche as well and, with its two pillars gone, the House had sunken into a languorous and subdued mood.  After tossing a doleful Cerberus a new bone, Megaera headed towards the entrance of the hall.

Yup, the match-making system of had definitely lost a lot of its marbles, hadn't it? Before the face of the third candidate could appear, I summoned up all my courage and shouted out. "No, hang on a minute! I don't have any thoughts of marriage yet!" The Judge lowered his head as if he wanted to apologise and backed off. [If the esteemed Prince isn't ready yet, then the introduction of the next candidate can be delayed until the next time…] [Hmm… I wonder who'll be able to tame this stubborn Prince of ours.]
*SCREAMING*
We all agree on who was about to show up as the third option, right? We all know who it was gonna be? Right?
Oh man, I just about fell out of my chair and rolled around on the floor when the Candidates started to appear. I know everyone in the entire Star Stream seems to love their shipping, Uriel and Persephone in particular, but I WAS NOT PREPARED.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Okay, I was maybe a little prepared for some teasing since Persephone loves to tease him about his (so far nonexistent) love life but this whole little matchmaking presentation from a Judge of the Underworld was more than I could have ever imagined. The Judge literally saying that maybe Sangah is out of Dokja's league adakjfldjfskfs.
And let's not forget, we're literally right in the middle of a massive battle that's about to go sideways due to the meddling of a certain archangel. But, you know, priorities.
I swear...what even is this novel? How am I ever gonna explain any of this to anyone?
Oh man, and then after teasing him all this time about Sangah and Joonghyuk (…and then Joonghyuk again…) Persephone just casually drops Bihyung into the conversation.
Bihyung.
Which… not a ship I’ve ever considered... even if they do have a baby together. (Wow, this story is weird isn’t it?)
But, you know what? You do you, Dokja! I support your strange but unique life choices!
(Dokja does not want this. Dokja does not want any of this.)

Where The Dead Forget — Chapter 7: Known
Tumblr media
Hades Gameverse Memory Loss AU | Achilles/Patroclus | E | Chapters: 7/22 | Words: 71,247 (Ch 7: 10,825 words)
Chapter 7 Summary: Achilles & Patroclus have a second meeting which goes somewhat better than the first. Patroclus is curious, and goes on a fact-finding trip where he sees some familiar faces.
Excerpt:
“A servant of Hades…. He comes all this way, only to return where he belongs after a brief chat… quite curious. Am I really worth the trouble? How is someone like him even given the privilege, I wonder, to simply walk back and forth between realms as he does… who even is he?”
The statue continues to appear thoughtful, pondering this carefully, and does not answer.
Patroclus sighs. “My friend, I must admit as good as you are at keeping secrets, I find it to be rather inadequate in a situation such as this. Dare I say I can find someone else around here with a tongue a bit looser than yours. After all, this realm is hardly lacking in rambling gossipmongers and blowhards… I should have no trouble at all.”
Making up his mind all at once, Patroclus rises. He has not moved from this spot since the last time he stood to watch Achilles’ previous departure. In this place where time is imperceptible, he is uncertain if it has been been thirty minutes, or thirty years, or indeed even thirty hundred years since then. He wonders if his folded legs might feel stiff and sore from disuse—miraculously however, they feel as light and springy as if no time has passed at all.
He takes the staircase down, crossing the bridge over the river, making his way to the gate opposite from the one Achilles passed through. It is a bit irrational perhaps, to worry that they might stumble upon one another again out there, in a realm that already seems alive, and enjoys playing tricks on its inhabitants, shifting its paths and holding familiar spots as well as destinations out of reach. It is this which makes Patroclus wonder with some trepidation if he will be able to find his way back again once leaving. Still, his curiosity has made the imperative of an errand like this too great to ignore, and he allows himself to have faith that he will be able to return.
He turns, and looks up to the statue once more as his hand grips the latch of the gate. It ignores him as it stands there, dignified and imposing—the largest presence in this space.
“Watch things over for me while I’m away, please,” Patroclus calls to it softly before passing through the gateway, the hem of his cloak whispering after him.
