In the three years that Janus of Onryx had been a companion to the king, not once, not twice, but almost fourteen times that the man had gone missing.  Most of the time, he had been found hiding somewhere on the grounds, so not exactly missing, but it did add some spice, so he dealt with it.

So don’t judge him if he was rather indifferent to the guard that had burst into his personal study.

“The king is missing.”

“Don’t bother me, I’m busy.”  Janus flipped a document over, pulling out a candle so he could wax seal the back.

“He’s not in the palace.”

“Do I care?”

“Janus, please, he was here last.”  the guard shifted nervously as Janus lit the candle, still indifferent.

“Let me finish this up and I’ll do your job for you.”

The king, meanwhile, was being insulted by a rather cheeky young man.  Roman had said good morning to Janus and then had snuck out of his own palace to head to the surrounding town.

Roman loved his job, he loved the people, but he hated how it made it difficult to just go out and observe.

Anyway, he had made it to the edge of the town, where the poorer people lived when the voice assaulted him.

“Looks like a little royal got lost, eh?”

Roman paused.  There wasn’t anyone in the area and so he slowly turned in a circle, one hand flinching to his sword.  “Where are you?”

“Does it matter?  Well, I guess it does, you do look higher ranking than me by any chance.  I’m on the roof to your right.”

Roman turned and looked up to see the owner of the voice, who was lounging on the thatch roof of a small shack, smirking.

“Hello Princey.”  Roof guy said, waving.  “Here to tax me again?  Honestly, at this point, might as well take the skin from my neck before I commit high treason.”

Roman sputtered.  “I... I was just taking a walk... Thatcher in the Rye.”

“Very creative for a royal.  I’m not a thatcher.  This isn’t even my roof.”

“It’s not?”

“No, it belongs to the rich fucker who is gonna force me off it.”

Roman really wished that his father had taught him how to talk to people like this.  He honestly had no idea.

“can I get a name?”

“Nah.”

“Well, Nah, how can I help you?”  Roman swept into a bow, feeling a bit silly to be bowing to a dirt covered person on a roof, but they laughed.

“A royal, bowing to me of all people! Must be my unlucky day.  You can’t help me.  When I said that I didn’t own this roof, I meant it.  It’s eviction day, I’m just waiting to be dragged off in chains.”

The nonchalant way that he seemed to accept it was jarring to Roman.  Yet, behind the dirt and the wary gaze, he could see very real panic in the other’s eyes.

To say that Virgil was having a good day was a lie.  First he’d had woken up to the reminder that this was his last day of freedom and when he decided to make a last, bold but stupid stand, the freaking king had shown up.

He was playing dumb in hopes that King Roman would laugh it off and hopefully leave before the count could show up.

God, it’d be embarrassing to be dragged off kicking and screaming if his royalness was watching.

Unfortunately, the king was still talking and Virgil could see a cloud of dust from about a mile off, which could only be caused by horses.

“Do you know who I am?”  The king’s voice pulled his eyes back down.  Virgil shrugged.

“You’re dressed like a common folk, but your clothes are too clean and you wield a sword. Most likely a royal boy running from his mommy and daddy for a day out.”  Virgil looked back up to see that the dust was closer, probably arriving within the next five minutes.

“How dare!  I am an adult.”

“Cool, I don’t care.  Run off royal, before the wolves come.”  Virgil waved his hand dismissively and the king looked taken aback as he swiveled around to see the approaching count with his entourage. 

“Virgil! Get down from there.”

Virgil rolled onto his back, taking in the sky.  “Can I take a week to think about it?”

The count sighed, hell it was loud, Virgil could hear it from here, almost fifteen feet away.

“Do you want to be forcefully removed?”

“I mean, I would have gotten off the roof if I wasn’t expecting a fight.”  Virgil flipped over again, glaring at the count, the king lost in the small crowd of people that had started to gather outside of their nearby homes to watch.

It happened pretty fast.  One of the entourage walked his horse forward, reached up and yanked Virgil down by the hair.

Virgil fell, landed on the dirt with a thud and then scrambled to his feet, attempting to book it before the man from before grabbed his hair again.

“Sorry.”

“It’s whatever I guess.  You were hired for this right?  Can’t hold it against you.”  Virgil said as roof puller got off his horse.

“I have to tie you up.”

“Fair enough.”

The ropes were the worst, and it was only now that Virgil’s bravado left him as he was thrown on the back of a horse, completely at the mercy of the count and company.

He looked up as the horse started to walk, catching a glimpse at the crowd.

“Bye!  Wish me luck as I rot!”  One last jab, fake snark as a hope to the others that he wasn’t about to be broken.

Virgil then closed his eyes, and quietly began to cry.

...

Janus had finally finished what he needed done when another guard ran in, further annoying him.

 “We found him.”

“Thank goodness, I was so worried.”

“He wants to speak with you.”

Janus stood and pushed his chair back, following the man to where Roman’s study was.

His partner was pacing the study, dressed in what looked like a poor disguise, hands running nervously through his hair.

“Ro, what’s wrong?”

Roman looked at him.  “Just something I saw today.  Do we really tax people so much?”

Janus let out a quiet sigh.  “Honey, you might want to sit down.”

“No, I want to know the answer.  I just watched someone get tied up and taken because they couldn’t pay!  How is that fair!”  Roman whirled around, tears pricking in the corners of his eyes.

“We try to do it percentage based.  The person you was taken probably owed private tax.”

Roman turned again and Janus walked over, stretching out a hand.  “Did you get a name?  We can look into it.”

“Virgil.  I don’t think he had a surname.  But Janus, they ripped him off his roof and just.. took him, it was horrible.”  Roman took Janus’ hand, still shaking a bit as his partner folded him into a hug.

“We’ll look at it, promise.”

...

Roman waited a week before looking back with the records finder to see if there was any clue where Virgil was.

Logan was annoying, but at least he did his job better than anyone.  He handed Roman a stack of transcripts, and when he looked through it, it was all trade receipts between Virgil and the Count Burgess, and the prices slowly got higher with no explanation to why or what was being traded.

At least he had a location now.  Roman took Janus and a few guards on the journey to the Count’s estate.

Needless to say, the Count was surprised to see the king knocking on his door.

“Your Majesty.  To what do I owe the pleasure, and with so little warning?”

Roman stepped forward as the Count bowed.  “Just looking for someone.  Virgil was his name.  There’s no record of him after you settled your debts with him.”

“But of course.  Come in?”

The group entered and Roman shivered.  Everything was perfectly clean, but even then, it all just felt shifted to the left.

“I don’t have many that come to me for financial aid, but when they do, it’s always delightful to help them out.  Of course, the poor boy couldn’t pay me back...”  the Count turned and opened a door.  “He’s down there, two at a time.”

Roman gave Janus’ hand a squeeze before nodding to the Count.  “I’d prefer to go first.”

“But of course.”

The pair went down the stairs, it being eerily silent.

“Now, before we enter the backrooms, I’d prefer you don’t have me killed,  I’m only collecting my debts.”

Roman narrowed his eyes.  “You say that as if you are doing something that would warrant death.”

The Count shrugged.  “You seem to be the overly emotional type you Majesty.  I learned my method of debt collecting from your father, so forgive me if I do offend you.”

Then he opened the door.

Virgil woke up, feeling like death itself had sucker punched him.  He didn’t bother opening his eyes, it was dark, of course it would be, he was in the dungeons after all.

Something felt off though.

“Is he okay?” “MMMMmmm, no, the infection is pretty bad.  I’m sorry Ro.  He’ll probably be in and out of consciousness over the  next few days.” “Thank you.”

Virgil tried to open his eyes, yelped in pain from the natural sunlight and then tried to roll away, pain flaring absolutely everywhere.

“Hey, you’re okay now.  Promise.”

Virgil didn’t respond and he felt a hand rest on his forehead.  

“I’m so sorry etoile.  Just rest okay?”

Virgil nodded.

Something warm covered him and he drifted off again.

...

Janus was surprised that Roman had let the Count live.  After everything had gone down, they’d returned to the palace with one less Count and one patient in need of severe healing from the injures and undernourishment from just one week.

They were laying in bed when Roman first asked him.

“Am I bad because of what my father did?”

Janus rolled to his side to look at his love.  “You saved Virgil, right?”

“yes, but~”

“No buts Ro, you did better than any king I know.  You’re a hero.”

“Hmm.”  Roman muttered before scooting closer to Janus.  “I’m worried.  Patton said that he’d get better, but I still worry.”

“How about you let the funny magic man do his healing, and I’ll make sure that you don’t go stir crazy waiting for your crush to wake up.”

“Not a crush.”  Roman protested.

“Virgil is very pretty though, you told me that.  And you seemed to put a lot of effort in for one person who owed debts to a person.”

“Okay, fine, you win Jan, but you’ll see once he’s coherent.  He’s wonderfully snarky.”

Janus laughed quietly.  “Fair enough.”

...

Roman wasn’t in the country when Virgil first awoke and was actually functioning past a fever dream and a few mumbled sentences.

Janus was there however, and Roman was right.

Virgil was incredibly snarky, and also very antsy, further proven when he tried to clamber out of the bed, almost falling before Janus caught him.

“Let the fuck go of me.”

“I’m sorry, I’d rather not have staff clean blood from your face off the ground when you collapse.”

Virgil hissed and Janus begrudgingly let him go, hands still hovering just in case.

“Roman’s going to be disappointed that he didn’t get to meet you.”

“We’ve met.”

“Ah yes, the roof incident, I’m well aware.”

“Fuck you.”

...

It took a long time for the scars to heal.  It took even longer for Roman to work up the courage to ask if Virgil would court him.

And it was Janus who asked in the end anyways.

oc creation thoughts, mostly about names, inspirations and general development info. not sure if anyone wants to read this, but im in an oc mood right now.

František Kafka (The Magpie)

-His first concept art was made in 2019! That version kinda sucked but it did have the base ideas of current František (bird theme, black and white color scheme, two-tone gloves)!

-He’s Czech because uhhh I wanted to learn how to spell Czechia so I didn’t need to look it up every time.

-Did you know that his name is actually pronounced ‘fran-ki-shek’? I sure didn’t when I picked it! Anyway his first name doesn’t have any special meaning, it just looked cool. I had A Lot of last name candidates, most of them bird-related, but Kafka stood out because: 1. it’s cool, 2. it means ‘jackdaw’ and jackdaws are like magpies except not.

-I had many ideas for his codename, but decided to go with a simple animal name. I chose Magpie because they like shiny things and they’re pretty. (also I want to think he kind of sounds like a magpie when he laughs)

-I made his whole being in like, 2 nights and I’m proud I haven’t changed him much.

Gustav Schlösser (The Taxman)

-His biggest inspirations were the dudes in this music video (also the song shouldn’t fit him but it does). Also like, general shady asshole energy was a big inspiration.

-I wanted a character who was either Swiss, Bavarian or Maltese so I just made his dad Swiss and mom Maltese lol.

-His name doesn’t have much meaning it just sounds like the name of someone who’s a shady asshole and also Swiss. (also I threw in 2 Maltese names in the middle to balance it out, those have no meaning either)

-Ngl I don’t love his codename but it’s the best I could come up with and he feels like the type of guy to name himself something ‘cool’ instead of something that makes sense.

-At some point I decided that he needs some wild boar motifs, he still doesn’t have any. I gotta sort that out. 

Jyrki Laukkanen (Iron Fist)

-I had an idea for a rockstar type of guy who used brass knuckles and sang karaoke in his spare time, decided to make him Finnish.

-At first he was gonna be more Frederik (super popular finnish singer) inspired but I couldn’t get him to “feel” right and then I remembered that Tapani Kansa (another popular singer) existed, and was kinda hot when he was younger. His whole deal is basically based on these two images, and his face is heavily inspired by Tapani.

-Okay so Jyrki is a pretty generic manly name and Laukkanen is a pretty generic surname. I wanted to name him Taisto (battle) but it didn’t fit. Also wanted to name him Varma Kosto (certain revenge) but that didn’t feel right either.

-Choosing a codename for him was hell. My first thought was Verikarhu (blood-bear, play on the word verokarhu, tax collector), but that didn’t fit him at all and was too close to Gustavs codename. My second thought was something akin to Volvo Markkanen, but Jyrki is no gentleman criminal, so that didn’t work out.

Then I realized that in Finnish brass knuckles are called fist irons so Iron Fist came pretty naturally from that.

(-Additional note: he speaks Finnish in a heavy south-western dialect because that’s the only I know how to write and also everyone thinks it’s the ugliest dialect. And it kind of is.)

Plastic Heart - Part 16

Namjoon x Reader Author: Mo Summary: When you get the highly-anticipated BTS dolls for Christmas, your life takes a turn in a way you never could have expected. Note: Luna is a real one omg we stan. Warnings: None? Koya cuteness? Word Count: 1.5k

Luna responded to your SOS text pretty fast. You’d told her it was urgent and you needed her help and she asked how you wanted to hide the body, so it went unsaid that she would be your ride or die no matter what. You told the guys to stay in your room while you talked to her and kind of...warmed her up to the topic. It wouldn’t be easy to introduce someone else to this crazy world you’d found yourself in, but you knew she’d be able to handle it. Or at least, you hoped so.

When she finally got to your place, you opened the door for her. Namjoon was sitting on the couch, wearing a stray mask you found over the bottom half of his face. Baby steps. You had to introduce her to this in baby steps.

“Okay, spill. What’s your deal?” She asked as soon as she’d stepped over the threshold. Luna set her laptop bag on your couch and motioned to Namjoon. “I saw you all over Twitter. Who’s the guy?”

“I don’t want to dump this all on you at once.” You prefaced, sitting down next to him and welcoming her to sit down too. “It’s...a lot, I’m not going to lie.”

“Did you kill someone?”

“No.”

“Are you fleeing the country for tax evasion?”

“No.”

“Okay. So what is it, then?”

“I need a fake ID and a birth certificate.” He told her. “And some other things.”

“Why, are you a drug dealer or something?” Her eyebrows furrowed. For some reason, this guy’s voice was...familiar...

“No! God, no, I just…” Namjoon sighed. He looked at you.

“Promise you won’t scream, okay?” You took Namjoon’s hand and nodded. He reached up with his free hand and pulled down his mask.

Luna raised an eyebrow, studying your boyfriend’s features. “Namjoon?”

“Namjoon, yes. RM, no.”

“That doesn’t make any sense.”

“No, it really doesn’t, does it?” Namjoon thought over how to explain this carefully. “My name is Namjoon and I...look exactly like him and sound exactly like him, but I’m not RM and I’m not in BTS and I’m not a rapper.”

“I don’t get it. How is that even possible?” Luna opened her laptop, opening up her forgery software anyway.

“Well, it’s kind of a long story.” You bit your lip, playing with Namjoon’s large fingers anxiously.

“I’ve got nothing but time.”

“Okay, so um, this is going to be really hard to believe, but...until yesterday…” Namjoon took a breath. Saying it made it real, and for some reason, admitting this to someone other than you made him feel...bad. He didn’t like thinking about his plastic past. “Until yesterday, I was...Koya?”

You sat up straight at the mention of the koala, who was tottling into the room, two of his babysitters, Yoongi and Jimin, namely, running after him. Your would-be son looked very upset. He had the little blankie you’d given him in one little chubby arm, the other down at his side.

Luna watched wide-eyed in silence as the little guy waddled over to Namjoon, who scooped him up in his arms and cooed gently. “Aww, Koya, did you have a nightmare?”

He nodded, curling into Namjoon’s chest. Luna looked from the koala to Namjoon and then to Yoongi and Jimin, who were standing there frozen and looking at the blue-haired girl. They didn’t realize she was here yet. This was not good.

“Um…” Luna stared for a long couple of moments, looking to you for some kind of explanation for the chaos your life had steadily become. “So...They’re just…”

“Toys are alive.” Yoongi explained. The cat was already out of the bag. “Please don’t scream.”

“Like...all toys?”

“Yeah.”

“Ah...alright…” She thought for a long time, quiet. “Okay. That...you know, that kind of makes sense...a little.”

“You’re taking this a lot better than (Y/N) did.” Jimin watched Luna for another development, but she was pretty calm so far. “She screamed and cried and dropped Taehyung.”

“Listen, it was quite the shock.” You defended while Namjoon chuckled. That day felt so far-off now, even though it had been the beginning of all of this. “Jimin, go get the others. That might be the easiest way to explain...this…”

“Smart.” Yoongi nodded while Jimin walked back to the bedroom to summon the rest of his brothers, who followed him out to the living room a minute later. Luna scanned the line of them, counting. That wasn’t right, there were only six. So, she did a quick roll call in her head.

Jin, Yoongi, Hoseok, Jimin, Taehyung, Jungkook, and…

Holy shit.

She looked at Namjoon, who smiled sheepishly. He rubbed the back of his neck with the hand that wasn’t cradling Koya. “Yeah, so uh, I used to be about a foot tall and made of plastic…”

“Well that explains just about everything, doesn’t it…” Luna thought through all of it. “Let’s do it, then. Let’s make you like, legally a person.”

“Thank you so much.”

“Yeah, yeah, thank me later. Right now, I’m gonna need you to bullshit a bunch of stuff so I can put it on your ID.”

And so, bullshit you did. Some of it was a matter of looking at him and writing things down: his eye color, his height. She was able to fudge some numbers, and with some hacking, she could get him into the system and give him a (resolved) parking ticket on his record. Ironic that the once-plastic Namjoon would be getting his driver’s license before the original one.

“Date of birth?” Luna asked. Namjoon’s face went blank. He thought about it for a second.

“Well, technically, it’s like August 7, 2019, but I have a feeling that’s not gonna fly…”

“Right, definitely not.”

“Holy shit, I’m a cradle robber. You’re like five months old.”

“I didn’t even think about that until now.” Namjoon admitted. He’d gotten pretty lucky to turn human when he did. There were probably toys that had been around since the 1980’s, and here he was, human after a handful of months. Unfair? Maybe. Was he glad not to be plastic anymore, though? Hell yeah. “Is that okay?”

“Yeah, let’s just not think about it.” You laughed.

“We can keep August 7th if you want, but if we make your birthday 1994, you’ll be older than RM.”

“1995 or 1996 would be fine.” Namjoon reasoned. “I really don’t want to be older than him. That makes me feel weird.”

“Well which do you want?”

“1996.” He answered.

“We’re going to need to make up names for your parents.” Luna read from her template. “Also, do you want to keep Kim as a surname? It’s pretty common, so you probably wouldn’t be questioned.”

“Yeah, we can keep Kim.” He nodded. “I’ll look up some Korean names for my parents.”

The three of you sat there for a while longer, researching and plugging in facts about someone who didn’t exist in the eyes of the law, and by the time you finished...he did. He held his ID, looking it over. He held it up next to yours and it looked...real. Like, really real. Luna was good.

“Thank you so much, Luna.” You hugged her for a long time once she had her stuff all packed up. “Really, you don’t know how much you just helped us.”

“Anytime. We’re still studying together on Wednesday, right?”

“Of course.”

And just like that, she was gone, her eyes opened to the world around her. You walked back over to Namjoon, who was holding Koya and sitting on the couch, his new documents spread out on the coffee table. You’d need to get him a wallet to keep his ID and his fake student ID in, but that could wait a few more days.

“I’m legally a person now…” He said quietly, staring at all of it. This was a lot to swallow all at once.

“And how do you feel about that?”

“Good. Really good.” His dimple came out of hiding as he slowly smiled. You sat down next to him and curled into his side, a tentative hand turning his face towards yours. “I’m just overwhelmed is all. I feel like everything’s happening so fast…”

“We’re gonna take it slow this week, alright? I’m sure this has all been a lot to deal with.”

“Yeah, a little. Can we just...put in a movie and cuddle?”

“We can do anything you want.” You kissed his nose. Namjoon leaned into your warmth, an arm wrapping around you and pulling you closer. Taking advantage of your new proximity, you tilted your head and kissed him deeply, passionately, in a way that made him elicit a little moan from the back of his throat. “I love you, Namjoon. I know it’s a big scary world out there, but I’m gonna help you get through it. I promise.”

“If you keep kissing me like that, I might not make it through the movie…” He whispered, his voice deep and husky.

You grinned, pecking his plush lips playfully. “Then maybe once we put Koya to bed, I’ll keep kissing you like that…”

Namjoon grinned devilishly. You’d be the death of him, but...he decided maybe that wasn’t such a bad thing...

Hiya! If you're still interested in taking requests, I'd love to see more Ran-centric pieces in the world. She seems to get pushed to the sidelines in a lot of cases, so it'd be lovely to read something from her perspective.

I actually have the first chapter to a ShinRan fic. It’s a university-au, and it’s from Ran’s POV, so I hope this counts? If it doesn’t, lemme know. xD

Summary: Despite herself, Ran finds herself curious about the criminology student she always notices running across campus. ShinRan. University AU. 

“Youhaving fun, Ran?”

Abovethe noise, old music from the 2000s blasting through far too big speakers,Sonoko’s voice reaches Ran’s ears. She offers a smile, lifts her cup of dietcoke and offers a small nod.

It’s nother most enjoyable task, going to parties and clubbing, but she doesn’t hateit. Maybe she’d enjoy it more if everyone else were sober, not making a messout of themselves, but then it would lose all university charm.

Orrather, that’s what Sonoko says.

“Yeah,”Ran says in response, “It’s not half bad.”

Sonoko’sforehead wrinkles into a frown as she asks, “You mean it’s only half good?”

“Ohhush,” Ran says, sipping from her plastic cup. It would make her feel more likeshe’s stepped out of an American movie if the cup were red, if there were morethan dancing and drinking games immersed into the room. But there isn’t, andRan’s only a little disappointed. “You know what I mean.”

“Sure,sure,” Sonoko says, and she continues to dance. Sonoko isn’t a bad dancer, per say, but she’s had alittle drink and her usual grace is squandered by alcohol. “Dance with me Ran.”

Ranisn’t much of a dancer, but Sonoko grabs her hands and suddenly her cup issomething to be balanced as they sway together, swinging their hands left andright in time with the music.

It’s notdancing as much as it’s the jerking of their limbs, but it makes Ran smile andyeah, this party isn’t half bad.

Theyhead back to their dorm at around one a.m., not too late by Ran’s standards,but not too early for Sonoko’s. Sonoko mutters something under her breath butRan barely hears her.

The walkisn’t far. They only need to walk from one end of campus to the other end, butsomehow, with the cold biting at their heels, the walk takes longer than itusually does.

It’sprobably not helping that Ran is helping Sonoko stay up – not that her best friendis that drunk. But a tipsy Sonoko, isa clingy Sonoko, a hug-loving Sonoko.

“Let’swalk faster,” Sonoko says, and she shivers, realises just how cold it is. Thegrip on Ran’s arm tightens, as if this will help. “I’m freezing, Ran.”

“So amI,” Ran says.

And somust everyone else outside of the dorms, because seconds pass and then Ran canhear heavy footsteps beside her, running. Out of the corner of her eye, shespots a man, coat fluttering around him, one glove on, the other off, racingacross the universities’ crossroads in front of her.

“Ithought we were over this,” he hisses to himself, as he races, “but now I’m bothcold, and an idiot.”

Ranalmost wants to talk to him, but there’s something in his expression that sayshe’ll only be more stressed by the conversation. Plus, he looks pale enough tobe freezing.

“Someonelooks unhappy,” Sonoko croons. She readjusts her headband and offers Ran asmile. “Whenever I see bits of peoples lives like this, I always want to knowwhat’s happened.”

Ofcourse, she does. Sonoko is an amazing best friend, but even Ran needs to admitthat she’s extremely nosey. To the point where sometimes, Ran thinks it’s morea hindrance than a good thing.

“Iknow,” Ran says. After a small pause, “I hope he’s alright.”

Sonokoshrugs as if to say, ‘we’ll never know’.

“Let’sget back,” Ran says, “before we freeze.”

Shedoesn’t expect to see him again, the man who’d been running so late at night,frustrated, but it’s almost as if now that she’s seen him, he’s popping upeverywhere. Ran concludes that he’d always been there, running around campusbut that she’d never been looking, has simply never noticed.

Sheisn’t sure.

All sheknows for certain is that this guy worries her. Running around as much as hedoes, stressing under his breath makes her concerned that he’s simply toostressed. After the first few times, Ran makes it a task during her day to seeif she can spot him.

And mostdays, she does. In the corner of her eye, he’ll pop up and she’ll turn,spotting him, feeling both worried for all the stress he carries on hisshoulders, and nervous that someone is going to point out that she’s searchingfor him like he’s the main character of the ‘where’s wally’ books.

Shecarries her concern with her, and it lingers, growing every time she sees himrush past with pursed lips or with brows knitted together in a frown. Ran justwants to grab him by the shoulders, tell him to slow down and simply ask ifhe’s okay.

Everytime she feels like she can simply… conjure up some confidence to ask if he’sokay however, he’s always in the middle of some sort of disappearing act. Hernervousness to ask if he’s alright is nothing against his haste.

So, Randoesn’t ask.

(Even ifshe does start daydreaming about what it would be like to just tell him to slow down.)

Sometimes,Ran thinks maybe she cares a little too much.

This isa stranger, after all. Someone who’s life she has no permission to ask after.It doesn’t change the fact that she cares though, whether she should or not.Ran’s always been weird in that respect – has always left herself open, wallsdown, more vulnerable and capable of feeling an overwhelming amount at onetime.

Still,it doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have any feelings about the situation, aboutwanting to leave a random stranger less stressed.

Maybeit’s because she has high empathy, or maybe she’s just a weirdo like so many of her classmates back in high school hadclaimed but it doesn’t matter. Because there’s nothing she can change about thesituation.

It is,what it is.

“Excuseme,” She says, finally, when she spots him in the student union shop. She takesadvantage of the fact that they’re both in the same queue, hiding temporarilyfrom the rain. It’s the first time she’s seen him stand in one place for ashort time.

He turnsever so slightly at the sound of her voice, and she doesn’t want to invade hispersonal space, so she says, “I’m sorry, excuse me?” to get his attention, allthe while feeling like her own awkwardness is a pit in her stomach, ready to makeher squirm and question every word she says.

It’s thefirst time she’s really seen his face, and wow – he makes eye contact with her,and his eyes are a vibrant blue, brighter than any he’s seen before. It’senough to temporarily make her lose focus, but then, Ran steels herself,continues before he decides to turn back around.

“I’msorry,” she says, “It’s just – well, I’ve seen you rushing around campus abunch of times now and you always seem… taxed, like the stress is getting toyou – I mean– uh–”

Shereceives a raised eyebrow. It’s all Ran needs to realise that she’s rambling,that she needs to get to the point before she runs out of words to say.

“Iguess, I’ve just been wanting to ask if – well – you’re okay?”

Hisexpression shifts. For a moment, he’d been staring almost absently at her, asshe’d spoken, but as Ran comes to a finish, his lips tug upwards, quirking intoa small smile. Soft, gentle and almost, dare Ran say, appreciative.

“Hah,”he starts, and his voice is deeper that she’d expected, as if he’s recoveringfrom a cough. It’s almost… rough. “I didn’t realise that people noticed all myrunning around.”

A pause,and then he continues:

“Butyeah,” his lips quirk more, a wider smile, lighting up his face, “I’m okay.Probably a little overworked, but who here studying isn’t?”

Ran letsherself grin. It’s relief that moulds her muscles into place. The worry that’sbeen building in her chest with every spotting of him quickly eases, thepressure alleviating to a point where she feels like she can breathe properlyagain.

It’sdefinitely weird that she cares this much, Ran just knows it is.

“Ah,”she says, nodding her head. “That’s good, I’m glad that you’re good.”

And sheis – she shouldn’t be because, once again, she reminds herself that this is astranger, but she is.

There’sa light in his eyes, a sort of glimmer that reflects against his pupils, andRan is temporarily blinded by it. She’s certain there’s mischievousness hidingbehind that light, hidden and only ever brought out on those who he’s closestto.

Ranwonders what mischief he gets up to. Whether he even has the time to, if he’s overworked.

“What’syour name?” He asks, and Ran offers her name up, not thinking twice about it.She lives on a university campus, after all, she’s used to meeting new peopleconstantly, sharing names and conversation simply because they can.

Randomconversations on a university campus aren’t so scary, not to Ran. She’s not themost social person, but she’s not overly shy, she doesn’t think.

“I’mShinichi,” he says. He doesn’t offer a surname, which means that until Ran canfind out his surname, she’s going to be stuck calling him by a less formalhonorific. Perhaps that’s a plan he constantly has in action.

Eitherway, she doesn’t have the time to ask after his family name, because he turns,glances at the cashier and offers a small grin.

“That’sme, it seems,” Shinichi says, “I guess I’ll see you around on campus.Hopefully.”

“Yeah,”Ran says, and offers a small snort. It’s unladylike, not dignified in theslightest, but Ran doesn’t care. “With the amount you run around the campus,there’s no doubt that I’ll see you somewhere.”

Hesmirks, and then, once again, seems to disappear as if he’s in some sort ofrush.

“Oh, Mouri-san, hey!”

Ranblinks as she registers the words, tears her gaze away from the street, whereshe’s been stood for minutes, waiting, watching out for the shuttle bus thatwill take her from the university’s smaller campus back to the main campus.

For amoment, she barely registers the voice – she has, after all, only heard it onone occasion – but then her mind fills in the blank, and she realises that itis Shinichi, jogging up from the university buildings to the bus stop.

He liftshis hand up in a small wave.

Ranwaves back, glad to see that his shoulders seem less tense this time. It’s thefirst time she’s seeing him moderately stress-free. “Shinichi-san, hey! Youstudy on this campus?”

He dipshis head into a half-nod, stopping beside her. “Both actually. I’m a doublemajor, one subject brings me here. It’s uh – pretty inconvenient some days,actually.”

Thatmakes sense, Ran supposes. University time tables aren’t always the best atsetting classes up. She’s heard complaints of the physics students in the past,saying that they’d had one lecture at the campus’ planetarium, twenty minutesaway, booked in immediate succession to their astrophysics lecture.

It makessense that this could be a reason for stress, Ran can’t imagine that it’s veryeasy to rush between two various campus’. She’s almost glad that she remainsjust on the one.

“Howabout you?” Shinichi asks, pushing his hands into his pockets. “You study onthis campus too?”

Ranlifts up the novel she’s holding – Mishima Yukio’s ‘The Temple of the Golden Pavilon’ – and offers a small shrug.“Yeah, I’m a Japanese literature major. Minor in English. We can’t all jumpbetween two campus’.”

She’sexcluding, of course, the fact that all of the student dormitories are centredon the main campus, just a ten-minute walk from the main lecture halls. Shinichinods his head, and is silent for a second, as if taking the information,memorising it.

Then, inperfect English, “Now I’ve got someone I can have secret conversations with.”

Ranflushes. Sonoko had said that in the past, when they’d decided to take Englishtogether – except, Sonoko is more experienced, has grown up multilingual, dueto her parent’s business, and had found herself in the advanced classes.

“I’m notthat good,” Ran responds back, although it does feel nice to practice withsomeone outside of her classes. She falls back into regular Japanese, asks,“you take the class too?”

Shinichishakes his head. There’s a faint grin on his face, lips lifting up in a show ofamusement, as if he’s waiting for her to come up with some sort of theory. Ranraises an eyebrow, decides she’ll do no such thing and simply asks, “then how?”

If he’sdisappointed by the lack of deducing prowess, he doesn’t let it show. He simpleshrugs a shoulder and says, “my parents moved us abroad to the U.S. at thestart of middle school. It was necessary to get by, I guess.”

Rancan’t even imagine moving houses. She can’t imagine leaving behind her the homethat doubles as her father’s detective agency, can’t imagine what it would belike to leave Beika. Sure, she’s moved into the university dorms, halfwayacross Tokyo, but that’s different, she can always go home.

Movingto another town sounds like it’d bring too much anxiety. Moving to anothercountry? Another continent?

“Wow,”Ran mutters, “that’s terrifying.”

Hecontinues, mentioning about how he’d moved back to Japan in his final year ofhigh school, finishing his classes and trying to reintegrate himself with theJapanese culture. Maybe another time, she’ll ask him about the differences,culturally, but now doesn’t seem appropriate.

Hefinishes off his short explanation with a small huff. Ran isn’t sure whetherhe’s finally acknowledging her commentary, or whether he’s irritated himself bybringing it up, but either way, he’s smile tightens as if he doesn’t want tokeep talking about it.

SinceRan prides herself on being a good person, she decides that it’s for the bestthat she moves the conversation along, choosing a new subject. And speaking of subjects–

“So,”she starts, “if you don’t study English, then what do you study?”

He sendsher a grateful smile. “Criminology and forensic science. It’s all veryinteresting when the lecturers aren’t sending you on a wild chase from one campusto another.”

Rantakes a moment to empathise with having to chase around lectures, and then,lets out a very dignified huff of frustration. Criminology. It’s not something she’s ever enjoyed, and sincemaking her way to university, the dislike has only grown.

Orrather, maybe she has a bigger issue with criminologists.

Thedislike had bloomed last year, during her first semester in the university whenshe’d found herself thrown rather inexplicitly into a fling with a third-yearcriminologist. She’d been thrown more statistics on murder than she hadcompliments of the romantic kind, and she’d hardly been wooed, only likened to the various statistics he’d memorised.

Andthen, when he’d learned that her father ran his own detective… well, that hadopened a whole different can of worms that Ran doesn’t want to start on.

Shinichi’slips twist up at the sound of her disappointment. Ran blinks away confusion –past experiences have always bred some sort of irritation when she’d showncontempt at the subject.

“Not afan?”

Ran canquite honestly admit that no, she is not a fan.

Part ofher is relieved when Shinichi simply nods, doesn’t take her refusal to offense.

“That’llbe my task then,” he says finally, making her take the entire thought back. Shefeels a sigh rise in her throat but doesn’t breathe it out. Out of the cornerof her eyes, she can see the shuttle bus turning the corner, approaching thestop. There’s a shuffling around them, disgruntled students ready to board thebus. “I’ll make you reconsider.”

“I’m notparticularly interested in crime rates and statistics,” she says, the wordsbland. Then, because she doesn’t want to throw him off too much, make him thinkshe’s entirely horrible, she adds, “What would I even get out of this?”

Shinichipauses. He lifts his fingers up to his chin, holds them in a position thatseems almost like a pose but isn’t, somehow,as he thinks. His eyes are bright when he focuses on her. “I’ll get back to youon that.”

Ohgreat.

Studentsbustle around them – some heading off the bus, bumping into Ran and forcing herto not get caught up in the crowd, others heading onto it – and Ran doesn’teven have time to offer him a suave response, because he’s gone, hiddensomewhere on the bus.

Ranboards too, but even as she cranes her neck around, searching for his face, shecan’t see him. They’ve been effectively split apart by the other students, andRan’s too squished against others to see much at all.

Which isa shame, because she almost wishes she had taunted Shinichi a little bit, withhis task.

‘Have fun trying,’ she thinks.

The Punisher Season 2 Easter Eggs And References

Yes, I know. You don’t have to tell me that the second season of The Punisher dropped on Netflix a month ago. Surprisingly, this last month has been extremely busy for me. Birthdays, family stuff, changes in management at my day job, changes in editors (thrice!) at my freelance job, plus prepping my tax stuff has left me with very little free time. I finally managed to finish the second season this weekend (and I started Umbrella Academy, which is really interesting, but something I’m not familiar with, so no Easter Eggs on that one, sorry!) and finish writing up Easter eggs as well.

As usual, there are spoilers, but I went episode by episode with the Easter eggs. Anybody worried about spoilers has probably already watched the show at this point. I feel like I was probably the last one out there who hadn’t watched. Despite it taking me forever and a day to watch the show, there’s still a chance I didn’t catch everything, especially since the Punisher doesn’t seem like a show with a lot of in-universe Easter eggs.

S2E01 “Roadhouse Blues”

The Van

Oh, look. Pete AKA Frank is using a van full time. In the comics, the van houses a wide variety of weapons and surveillance equipment, but Frank isn’t quite that high tech without the help of someone like Micro around. He also calls it the Battle Van.

Lola’s Roadhouse

It’s probably just a coincidence, because Lola is just one of those names that pop culture junkies seem to love, but… who else thinks it might be a nod to Coulson’s favorite car in Agents of SHIELD?

Fiona

Some people will try to find the Marvel character that is “Fiona,” but again, I think this one is a coincidence. Why? Fiona is a weirdly popular name in comics. There’s a Fiona who is an Inhuman who can fly. There’s a Fiona who founds the sisterhood and hates men. There are also Fionas who are artists/writers/pencilers/etc in real life. I think this is just a case of them picking a pretty name.

Michigan

It’s the last place anyone would look, you say? Kind of like how it’s the last place anyone seems to care about because Flint still doesn’t have clean water? Yep.

S2E02 “Fight Or Flight”

Pete and Rachel

I like that Frank is still using the name Pete, but can we all laugh for a second about how these two are Pete and Rachel? It makes me laugh because these are two characters in friends. Pete only asks Monica out because he overhears Monica and Rachel talking about their love lives (or lack of them). Pete, funnily enough is like a Tony Stark character here: wealthy, throwing money around to get what he wants, buying women buildings, etc. He’s also played by Jon Favreau AKA Happy Hogan in the Iron Man movies. It’s one of those things that’s not meant to be a connection, but proves you can find “Easter eggs” in anything.

Rachel AKA Amy

Amy is based on a comic book character, but she’s been completely changed for the show. In the comics, she was a little girl who saw Frank escape a crime scene and promised him she wouldn’t tell anyone. He helped her out a few times as well. But, like I said, completely different. (Of course, the use of the name Rachel, and some of her later story gives a nod to another comic book character as well. We’ll talk about that later.)

Larkville, Ohio

Clearly based on Clarkville, Ohio. They thought leaving off one letter would make it less obvious? Anyway, here are some fun facts about Ohio in the MCU. It’s where there was a secret wing of a prison for powered people (thanks, Agents of SHIELD). It’s also where Coulson and company went to get information about CENTIPEDE (again, thanks Agents of SHIELD). Lincoln Campbell tried to escape Inhuman life as a doctor there (again, Agents of SHIELD). It’s also where Bucky sarcastically remarked Steve Rogers was from for one of his many fake ID’s to get in the army (Captain America: The First Avenger). And, it’s also where Helmut Zemo tracked down a super soldier in hiding (Captain America: Civil War). So, what I’m saying is, if you’re interested in lying low in the MCU, you don’t go to Ohio. Someone will find you.

Billy’s Memory

Billy Russo’s memory being jumbled, or having gaps, provides a nice storytelling device, but it’s also a nice nod to the comics. His memory was manipulated, or he was brainwashed, a few times. The only thing that restored his memory those times? Fighting the Punisher, of course.

A Jigsaw Puzzle

Lots of puzzle references to Billy, and with good reason. In the comics, he’s Jigsaw. The guy gets thrown through a plate glass window and his face is put back together like a jigsaw by a surgeon. He takes on the name and vows revenge.

Billy’s Mask

His mask is more than just to build suspense by covering up his face. You’ll see there are red and blue colors on the sides? It’s meant to be a nod to an art therapy practice that’s become helpful in treating soldiers with PTSD as a result of their work. Soldiers are instructed to create a mask to show people what they’re feeling on the inside, even if they can’t say it. National Geographic did a whole piece on how the work has been helping people. I wrote about it in my Jigsaw list, briefly.

S2E03 “Trouble The Water”

129

The door number that is clearly visible when Billy breaks out of the hospital with his therapist’s help is 129. To be fair, most house numbers, door numbers, and phone numbers are completely random. This one might be a coincidence. But… Amazing Spider-Man issue 129 was the very first appearance of the Punisher. Jigsaw AKA Billy Russo appeared over 30 issues later in the same series. It seems purposeful.

Mahoney

Look at Mahoney, making the rounds still. He started as a character on Daredevil and has worked his way through the Netflix shows.

The Pilgrim

That’s the name given in press releases to the religious villain who has some, uh, questionable tattoos removed once upon a time. He’s not a specific comic book character, but a lot of people have compared him to the Mennonite from the old Punisher comics.

S2E04 “Scar Tissue”

WHiH

The world news station of choice in the MCU, this one gets more attention in the movies. It’s covering news from every corner of the globe. Recently, it’s made its way into the Netflix shows, Agents of SHIELD, and Runaways as well.

WJBP TV

Another station in the MCU, this one is local. It’s typically only seen in the Netflix corner of the universe, so it’s usually covering New York news.

The Kitten Hanging On The Branch

I’m sorry, but did anyone not see one of these posters if they grew up in the United States? Nice nod to the inspirational poster schtick the public school system has. I think I saw it in guidance counselor offices at every school I went to.

New York Bulletin

Yes, the Bulletin is still going strong despite losing a lot of its staff in the second season of Daredevil.

Amy AKA Rachel

Okay, so despite looking like a nod to the little kid who keeps Frank’s secret in the comics, this character also appears to be a nod to Rachel Cole. She ended up in the middle of a gang war and became a vigilante, falling in with Frank.

Baseball

So, Billy had a thing for baseball? You know who else had a thing for baseball? Dex AKA Bullseye in Daredevil season two. Nice job keeping your sociopaths on theme, Netflix MCU.

S2E05 “One-Eyed Jacks”

Three Card Monte

I have a hard time believing that Frank Castle, marine, killer, and all around street savvy dude, doesn’t understand how Three Card Monte works. Then again, maybe no one has tried to swindle him with cards because they value their life. Who knows? Anyway, I found this version interesting because most people who hustle with it want you to “find the lady” as the queen of hearts. Here, it’s the queen of diamonds. I’m not sure what that says, but it’s interesting. (Also, I feel like Amy AKA Rachel and Skye AKA Daisy would get along. It reminded me of the sugar packets and Mike’s ID in the Agents of SHIELD pilot).

Turk Barrett

At this point, if you don’t know who Turk is, I’m just going to assume you haven’t seen any of the Netflix shows before. In which case, why are you reading these Easter eggs? Go start watching from the beginning, and then come back.

Oh, sh1t!

I think it’s cute that for all her life as a hustler, she doesn’t use actual curse words, but instead, speaks the way teens might curse via text.

S2E06 “Nakazal”

“You could always burn the place down.”

I feel like this is a nod to how arson tends to be a last resort for Frank in the comics. He prefers to go in, guns blazing, and just take people out. There are a few stories where he’s torched whole buildings, but they usually are just a minor thing in a major story arc.

Anderson And Eliza Schultz

Not comic book characters, but they do share their surname with Herman Schultz AKA the Shocker. I think that’s probably not a big connection. Instead, it’s more likely that the writers liked the name, and as a bonus, it gives them a nod to comic creators Charles Schultz (Peanuts) and Mark Schultz (art for DC, but also really big in indie comics).

I’m not going to list all of the political commentary in this episode, but whew. They really went for it.

S2E07 “One Bad Day”

The Title

“All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man to lunacy.” Or at least, that’s what the Joker believes in Batman’s The Killing Joke. It’s one of the biggest Batman stories ever, so I’m thinking the title is no coincidence. I also think a few staff members are Batman fans since the kid in the first episode also had a Batman backpack.

Fragmentation Grenade

An interesting choice for a weapon since in the comics, Jigsaw gets healed a few times, only to have his face ruined again by the Punisher. One of those times is the result of a fragmentation grenade.

S2E08 “My Brother’s Keeper”

The Fatal Shore By Robert Hughes

The book Amy reads when she’s bored in the trailer is actually about the founding of Australia. History teaches us it was a penal colony - the place where criminals were shipped to start over - but there were already Aboriginals there, which made for quite the conflict. Someone like Amy probably would have found the crime, the hustle of the whole thing, interesting, but she doesn’t strike me as someone who would be into history, so it’s no wonder she put it down.

“He did everything he could to you to make sure you suffered for the rest of your life.”

Yes. This is exactly why Frank leaves Billy alive in the comics. He kills everyone who had a hand in the deaths of his family - all but Billy, even though they weren’t as close as brothers in the comics. He leaves Billy alive so that the guy can suffer, but also to serve as a warning to anyone who comes after him. Billy spends a lot of his story arcs either trying to get revenge, or trying to get his “pretty boy” looks back.

S2E09 “Flustercluck”

Valhalla

Do we say this is a nod to the Thor franchise, or do we just accept that the world at large has the idea of Valhalla as paradise? Your call.

“I’m not the one that dies…”

I’ll confess Punisher is not my comic book cup of tea, but I feel like he said this line in a comic once. I could be wrong.

S2E10 “The Dark Hearts Of Men”

The Title

Pretty sure this is a nod to a Bible verse about humanity. But I’m not up on my Bible knowledge and a google search just gives me a bunch of reviews of this episode, so I’m sorry this isn’t more specific?

“Drunkards Prayer”

This is the song that plays when the Pilgrim is both fighting and recovering from his fight. It’s a song about wanting to be pious, but knowing you’re an addict. And it fits with his character pretty well. AJ McLean (of the Backstreet Boys) covered it once, if you’re interested. I think you could also apply it to just about any character in Castle’s world - people wanting to be better, but unable to leave the bad things in their life behind. And no, I won’t dissect every song choice for the season, but this one stuck with me.

Making Castle Believe The Worst

Making the Punisher believe he killed innocent people is straight out of the comics. It’s one trick a villain uses to bring him down, though ultimately, he figures out he wasn’t the one responsible. That looks like the same thing here with Castle believing he killed the women and the therapist’s “I know how to break Castle” thing.

S2E11 “The Abyss”

Queens

I find it interesting that the Punisher is frequenting Queens a lot in this season. (The warehouse where he gets arrested, as noted in the radio broadcast, is in Queens.) Why? Because he was introduced in a Spider-Man comic and frequently crossed paths with the web crawler. Where is Peter Parker from? Queens.

Karen Page

Karen’s appearance as Frank’s “lawyer” here muddles the timeline a bit. We’ve all been thinking this occurs after season three of Daredevil. That season ended with Matt and Foggy reforming Nelson and Murdock, but with making Karen a partner as well. Never mind that she doesn’t have a law degree or anything like that. But, Karen introduces herself as representing Nelson and Murdock. Maybe her name isn’t in the business because she’s not a lawyer? Or maybe this is actually set before that? Who knows? It’s all very ambiguous.

Sacred Saints Hospital

While this hospital didn’t appear in another episode, the Sacred Saints Cemetery did, and I wonder if they’re connected to one another? Sacred Saints is where Elektra was supposedly buried, which gives us a lot of Daredevil connections in this episode, huh?

Matt Murdock

Frank mentions the man himself while talking with Karen. I feel like this is more of a reminder that Frank knows Matt is Daredevil than it is a legit comment on the state of Matt and Karen’s relationship.

Karen’s Shoes

Not an Easter egg, but I like that the payment to the morgue tech/assistant medical examiner was her very expensive shoes, not something tropey like drinks with him. Thank you, writers. This was cute. Also, it gave Karen the means to run around the hotel easier and not be held back by her heels.

S2E12 “Collision Course”

Mr. Blue

The only thing I noticed in this episode was the nickname given to Billy by the florist. It’s actually the alias Betty Ross used in the comments when Bruce Banner was a fugitive and she tried to stay in contact with him. Probably not intentional, but you never know.

S2E13 “The Whirlwind”

“...pull your spine out of your throat…”

In the “Space” stories for the Punisher, he does something like this to Ultron, funnily enough. He reaches into Ultron’s mouth and pulls his core out, not his spine, through his throat.

Dive School In Florida

Okay, I couldn’t find any characters associated with the Punisher who spend a lot of time in Florida, but I can tell you Florida made its first appearance for Marve in Marvel Comics #1, that Man-Thing is from there, and that Captain Marvel spent time there working for NASA. Florida has also popped up in a few episodes of Agents of SHIELD. It’s where Joey (former SHIELD ally and Inhuman teammate) lives, where Elena has friends, and where May and Coulson pretended to be married to steal a painting.

That final image of Castle in his Punisher vest opening fire has been in several comics. It’s clear it’s intentional.

Stan Lee

The final episode closes with an “in loving memory.” Not really an Easter egg, but worth a mention. While Stan Lee did not create the Punisher, he had a hand in his name. Originally, Frank Castle was going to be called the Assassin. Lee thought they should go for something a little less on the nose, and coined the Punisher.

A few notes for the season:

Castle never purposely uses lethal force against law enforcement. I guess that’s supposed to make us believe that his killing of all the bad guys is acceptable.

The support group that Curtis leads? One of my favorite things is that there are a lot of flyers on the bulletin boards behind them for things like free puppies. A lot of these guys would do better (not suddenly be whole again, but maybe do a little bit better) with an emotional support animal. It’s proven that having an animal to come home to can actually help you live longer. It’s one of the reasons there are groups that take animals into children’s hospitals and retirement homes for people to play with.

The season finale actually feels very final to me. I think this might have been the only one of the MCU Netflix shows where the writers thought they might not come back? Because it seems like they closed everything up nicely instead of teasing something else down the line.

That’s all I’ve got this time around. The next Easter egg list on the horizon for me is, I believe, Captain Marvel, which should be up the same weekend it releases since I’m seeing that one opening night.

One of the more amusing family stories I sometimes tell is about a relative of mine, a few generations back, who moved in with another man after his wife died. Ooh, everybody goes. Salacious family gossip! Except the little town they moved to was actually Lily Dale Assembly, in upstate New York, which so far as I know is still one of the oldest continually running Spiritualist communes in the United States. Harry and Edward moved up there so that Edward, ex-model and former elder in the Presbyterian church, could start on what I think was his third career as a spirit medium. He channeled the spirit of an Edwardian actress named Lillie Langtry, also known as "the Jersey Rose". At this point, the whole 'shacked up with his boyfriend' thing has become the least interesting part of the story, and people begin to look at me funny. My parents fucked things up in many respects, several of them so egregious that I haven't spoken to them in years, but I want to give credit where credit is due. They never sat us down to have a talk about how some boys like boys and some girls like girls, and they were all people just like anyone else. It was stupidly obvious. My mother talked about "Harry and Edward" in the same tone she used for "Aunt Helen and Uncle Bob". Except friendlier, as Uncle Bob was known to be a lecher who eyeballed the teenage cousins, and we mysteriously saw a lot less of him after I was about twelve. I was probably in college -- so, old enough for my own friends to start coming out -- before I thought about it long enough to realize how unusual this was. There are a lot of families where I never would have heard about Harry, because they would have disavowed any knowledge of his existence as soon as they found out about his "friend". Tracing LGBT+ relatives can be tricky. They tend to lack a lot of paperwork that straight couples would have. Not just legit marriage certificates -- which don't always exist -- but a lot of other records that are predicated on the assumption that there is a marriage certificate, somewhere. Fifty years ago, John Doe and Roberta Roe could move halfway across the country together and apply for an apartment as "Mr. and Mrs. John Doe", and nobody would ever check. The only way to get that information, pre-internet, was to find out where the marriage would have been officiated, write to the appropriate county clerk (with a processing fee enclosed), and wait 4-6 weeks to see if you got an illegible photocopy or a 'no such file exists' form letter back. No landlord was going to do that. They'd look at you, make a snap judgement on whether you were likely to grow forty tons of weed in their rental property, and ask if you had first, last, and deposit. After you have a lease as "John and Roberta Doe", you can start getting utility bills, phone lines, library cards, checking accounts, even state IDs, depending on where (and when) you were. My own parents are a good example of how this works. My mother used her maiden name right up until she was lying in a hospital bed with a newborn (me), and the nuns filing the paperwork were confused by the concept of putting a different surname down for mother and child. My mother, who was understandably short on patience, finally relented and told them to use Dad's name for everybody. (In her words, "I was afraid they were gonna lose you.") They weren't legally married until I was three, and they only did it because we had moved from Little Canada to a state that even today spits in the face of social progress, and Dad's new health insurance wouldn't otherwise have covered anybody else. Mind you, my college FAFSA papers said they'd been filing taxes as married since 1978. My mother was never one to let a little thing like federal tax law prevent her from doing as she damn well pleased. In Harry and Edward's case, we do have some documentation: Harry wrote memoirs. My mother had a copy, and I've read it. They're mostly about the spirit medium stuff, but there's a fair bit about life as well, and they were hilariously domestic. You would have to engage in mental gymnastics of a phenomenal order to read the two of them as anything but a couple. I seem to recall Harry's daughter either writing to or visiting them in Lily Dale; according to the family, she was mainly just happy her father had settled down with someone who could cook, so he'd stop living on scrambled eggs and spaghetti. I've had no luck so far finding a copy of my own. Partly because it was privately published by someone who evidently went out of business 30+ years ago, but mostly because I didn't have any full names for anybody. The family has only ever referred to Harry as "Uncle Doc Harry". He wasn't a doctor of anything, but he did have an MSW, and for that time and that branch of the family, that was a pretty high-falutin' education. I'm still not sure if he was my great-uncle or my great-great-uncle. My grandfather was from a gigantic Irish Catholic farm family, where there were so many kids with such a range of ages that the eldest grandkids used to babysit their youngest aunts and uncles. It was without a great deal of hope that I prodded the Lily Dale Assembly at about 2 am one night, via their Facebook page. Yes, they have a Facebook page. Of course they have a Facebook page. Another thing you have to consider when nosing around after your queer kin is how to frame it. Somewhere conservative, I probably would have inquired after Harry, mentioning at some point that he used to share a house with someone named Edward. The Assembly, though? The Spiritualists are justifiably proud of their history of being early adopters of things like women's suffrage, feminism, and universal civil rights. They attract a lot of weirdos because they treat the weirdos like valid human beings. I was asking after people who would still be in the living memory of older residents, and a town like Lily Dale would have remembered them as the boring middle-aged married couple. So I just asked about my relatives, plural, Harry and Edward, and mentioned the ghost actress, figuring it would have been pretty unique even for a place like that. I expected to get a teenage intern, who had no idea what I was talking about, but could at least give me some way to get in contact with the town registrar or whatever a Spiritualist commune has. No. Oh, no. Whoever was answering their messages knew exactly who I was talking about, because they used to live across the street. Not only told me where the two of them went, but described the house they bought when they moved out of town in the early '90s. What the actual fuck. Thus armed with useful things like surnames, I went off to Google some more. I still haven't had any luck finding the book; when I first read it, online shopping was already a thing, and I found it eerie as hell to be physically holding a book that had no listing on Amazon. It has an AISN now, as someone evidently sold a signed copy on Amazon once, but no ISBN, and therefore no WorldCat entry. If it exists in any library I can get to, I'm not sure I have any way to ask for it. I can't find their obituaries, either -- my guess is they ran in the newspaper of the small town they lived in after Lily Dale, but the online archives have a big gap between 1989, when their microfiche scans end, and the 2000s, when someone bothered building them a website. If they have headstones, nobody's taken pictures of them for FindAGrave.com. I threw their names at Spokeo and WhitePages and the like, to see if whoever survived longest had moved elsewhere to be with other family, and made an interesting discovery. Directories like that scrape data from other places. Mailing lists, public records, that sort of thing. Most people have at least one "AKA" listing, where they did or didn't use their middle initial for something, or went by Kathy instead of Katherine. Harry seems to have really been Harry, never Harold, which fits with the family naming habits. I did dig up a middle name, and it does tally with the one on the picture of the book cover on Amazon out-of-stock listing, so at least I know I'm tracking the right guy. So far as I can tell from his AKAs, Edward never went by Ed or Eddie -- but he did, at some point in his life, go by Harry's surname. It's exactly the sort of middle finger to convention I would expect from any relative of mine, really. Fuck you, mainstream society, we're married. One of the places it's noted is on a profile for one of the ancestry services that says it was created and maintained by his brother, so at least some of his family seems to have treated them the same way Harry's did. It actually makes me wonder if they had some sort of commitment ceremony at some point. (Beyond signing a joint mortgage on at least one house, I mean. Those are way harder to get out of than a marriage.) Outlander Epi 3.07 Recap

Crème de Menthe mixed with lemonade is dreadful.

This week's episode saw an unfamiliar writers name on the title cards, for fans.  Karen Campbell is credited and by the surname, sounds like she comes from good Scottish stock!  We like her already.  It was another difficult part of the books to cover which drew mixed reviews but I actually enjoyed this episode. 

We start in the middle of the previous episode’s cliff hanger which had our fresh-from-the-clouds lass Dr Claire, in da house or kittle hoosey to be exact.  She was scarily caffeine deficient and fighting that accountant thug for her life!  To distract him she asked what Pi times 3,562 was and while he couldn’t resist such a juicy random calculation, she grabbed the nearest knife.  Go Claire!

No caffeine makes Claire very nasty so he had to dodge her viper-like advances which sent him tripping, smashing into the fireplace’s stone hearth like a pumpkin falling from a great height.  The resulting thunk meant Mr H&R Block was not going to be lodging any returns anytime soon. 

The cavalry arrive too late as usual.  Jamie, Fergus and Madame Jean/Jan burst into the room after hearing the kerfuffle. Claire was sipping her cup of Joe by then calmly declaring "He’s dead, chillax!"

Suddendly Mr H&R Block aka Blockhead stirs on the hearth and Claire rejoices that he hasn’t died.  She's like a cat playing with a half-dead mousey.  

Now fully caffeinated and firmly under the Hipocratic Oath, examines him and diagnoses a severe swelling on the brain.  Hitting stone from a height will do that to a head, Claire.  Much to Jamie's chagrin, she's determined to give him a second chance and knows it will kill him if she doesn’t do something fast.

Jamie can’t hang about and watch though as the excisemen who hired Mr Blockhead, will be looking for him soon.  He organizes the last of their smuggled casks & barrels hidden in the basement to be moved.  He then sends Fergus and Young Ian to negotiate their sale on his behalf so that he can pretend nothing is going on if/when they are raided.

Claire races to the local apocothary for brain surgery supplies and pushes in like a two year old waiting to get on the jumpy castle.  Another customer, a Mr Archie Campbell takes opposition to her impatience and she offers to pacify him by visiting his sick sister (as an experienced healer or killer in the next few minutes, if you don’t move). He accepts this offer and Claire leaves with her supplies, keen to dig her scalpel into Mr Blockhead’s smashed-in noggin. Party on!

Ian (all of 16, making him a master negotiator) talks their customer into buying all the barrels for a good price and throws in 3 Crème de Menthe barrels to sweeten the deal. As you do.  Nothing dodgy about Crème de Menthe sold by a 16 year old. Nope.

Back in the Brothel, Claire is prepping for building a shed.  Errh sorry, saw a drill and jumped to conclusions.  No.... she’s drilling a massive hole in her assailants head. Mayhap so he can get better Wifi or you know...live.  Same same. 

Downstairs Madame Jean is pulling out her hair and all her charm school knowledge as the shifty Sir Percival arrives with his henchman, the freaky Mad Eye Moody doppleganger. Creepy much?

Claire is like a ghoulish kid in the candy store and is soon drilling a hole in Mr Blockhead’s block head.  Yi Tien Cho is her surgical assistant/cheer squad through the process. Eventually and after some classic grinding/sucking sounds, blood gushes out and we assume Mr Blockhead will live to ride the excise wagon again. *Cheer!

In the basement, Sir Percival is unhappy to find the floor is bare apart from some spilled water.  At least we hope it was water.  I'm not touching it.

With the coast clear, Jamie heads back to check on Claire.  Unfortunately, Mr Blockhead will not be lodging his tax next year and has died.  That bed needs to be burned now surely?

Claire is unhappy to lose her patient because her God complex is firmly ingrained after saving people for 14 years.  Jamie is his usual supportive self and says she can save someone else another time.  Moving on. Whisky anyone?

To celebrate their successful barrel clearance sale, Fergus and Ian chug a few coldies down at the pub.  Soon it’s clear that Young Ian has goo-goo eyes for the barmaid Brighid.  Fergus calls her over and leaves Ian with her to get cosy. Fergilicious is the best wingman ever! 

Ian is a virgin and inexperienced with women but followed Fergus' advice even though he was nervous af.  Bridhid is taken with his cuteness so agrees to have a drink with him.  In the background Mad Eye Moody quietly watches on giving Ian serious side-eye.  Not the good sort either.  Ominous music alert.

Claire is still sulking about the dead guy in her bed.  Building a bridge, she decides to go find another patient that needs her and is not likely to pop their clogs before sunset. She goes to visit Archie Campbell and his ailing sister Margaret. 

Like my husband in his cave on a Wednesday night, Margaret isn’t in the mood for company.  Archie introduces Claire to Margaret and Margaret unexpectedly springs to life, ranting wildly about blood and Abandawe. I love her, she's fun. 

Archie explains she is known as a Seer and people pay well to hear her visions.  Seems Scotland had a lot of cray crays errhh, I mean Seers in this era.

Claire provides the recipe for some wicked herbal teas before suggesting another visit tomorrow.  Archie declines her self-invite explaining they are catching the red-eye to the West Indies on the ‘morrow, to see a rich client.  Oooh la lah!

Young Ian has turned the Printshop into his private Love Shack and is wooing his new GF with songs and kisses.  Stop!  You are killing us with cute. 

Claire returns to the Brothel to find Jamie at the table.  The king was in his counting house, counting out his money.... along came a frustrated Claire and said it’s time to move.  Burning the bed wouldn’t be enough for me either, Claire. 

As always, they are interrupted by a knock at the door announcing Ian Murray Senior is down stairs.  Stuff a duck, it's peg leg!  I've missed him so much.

Ian is very happy to see Claire but he’s frantically looking for Young Ian. He’d run away from home again, the wee pest.  Jamie lies to him and Claire is trying to think of England so Ian can't see she knows something. Ian is really distraught and it tugs at all our heartstrings.  Jamie promises to bring him to Lallybroch if he turns up.

On the way out Ian asks Jamie if Claire knows the big SECRET.  She doesn’t.  OMG to the max.  Ian runs/hobbles all the way home to share the gossip with Jenny McHappypants.

Over in the Love Shack, Ian’s cherry has been carefully popped, stuffed and mounted on the mantelpiece for prosperity.  They have company though and hear someone breaking into the shop. 

Ian sends Brighid scarpering and goes to confront the intruder - Mad Eye Moody.  MEM is looking for the smuggled barrels and is searching high and low.  Ian tells him there is nothing to find and to leave but as happens, a fight breaks out.  After a bit of shovey-lovey, MEM bumps a secret door and out pops some hot-off-the-press seditious pamphlets.  Bugger.

Ian struggles to grab the pamphlets off him.  MEM pushes Ian off, pulls out his pistol and shoots at Ian, missing him but accidentally starting a fire.  Things soon escalate into a scene from a Burning Man festival in Carfax Close.  Oh Lordy there's a fire!  *pass the marshmallows  Young Ian finding himself trapped, waits for help.

After Ian has left, Claire confronts Jamie about lying to his family. She's upset that Jamie thinks he knows what’s best for Ian Jnr instead of letting his parents know he's ok.  Claire tries to reason with the stubborn gingernut but he thinks she should be used to lying, having lied their way around Paris.  Typical bloke logic to bring up something that happened 20 years ago.  Ugh.

Claire throws the “you aren’t his parent” line at him and he returns a volley of bitterness for having missed Bree’s upbringing.  Turns out Jamie is jealous of Frank too. Duh, Frank was a sexy spy! 

Before they can throw ashtrays and start slamming doors, Jamie is alerted to the fire and races to the Printshop with Claire close behind.  

On arrival at the Printshop and finding it ablaze, Jamie realises Ian is still inside and goes to his rescue.  We all love the nod to Batman as Jamie jumps from the top level down to young Ian with full super hero drop slow mo. Rounds of applause please.

Checking Ian is breathing and looking for a way out, Jamie finds the miniature of Willie and stuffs it in his pocket.  Sentimental fool, there's a fire!  Get out now!  Throwing Ian over his shoulder like a Santa sack, he climbs a press, squeezes through a window, down the front stairs to safety.  Just in time to see the Edinburgh fire department squirt a tiny water pistol at the inferno.  Good job fellas.

Knowing his life in Edinburgh is now cooked.  *pun intended  Jamie instructs Yi Tien Cho to go pay Leslie and Hayes for their work.  Fergus is sent to try and intercept Mad Eye Moody before he can give the pamphlets to Sir Percival and make Alex Malcolm a very wanted man.  After that, he instructed Fergus to then round up Ned Gowan (Solicitor from Season 1) and get him to Lallybroch.  Jamie wants him to help sort out the fact he has another wife there.  Confucius say WHAT!!!!  That is a pretty yucky Secret Mr Fraser.

Alternative chapter 1

When we look back at our past, we believe the small things don’t matter. The results would have been the same either way. But it is the small choices we make in the heat of the moment that can set a chain of reaction of events that haunt us till this day.   On a certain Saturday night, a night that has become so unimportant in the history books of most people, even for those who were there that night played a key part in their lives, they can’t recall the exact date. But that doesn’t count for all people.   Naruto recalled that night, like it happened yesterday. How the police car appeared down the street, how one adolescent ran, warning the others down the street that the cops had arrived. How they all ran away. The blond could recall his every step that night, to the point an officer grabbed him from behind and pushed him against a wall. How he felt the panic rise and impulsively pushed his elbow in the old man’s ribs and turned around punching him right in the face. That punch has hurt his hand badly, but at that point the adrenaline was rushing through his veins and the only clear response coming from his brain was to run, and he did. He heard footsteps behind him. He ran inside an ally, but it was a dead end. The wall was tall and he already knew he couldn’t climb it. He turned his head around, the footsteps were getting closer and out of desperation, the blond just hid behind the dumpster. Everyone with a good set of eyes could have see him. He was done for...he knew. Not only was he a minor  in possession of drugs, he also punched an officer. His mind could already imagine his parents hearing the news. How disappointed they would be...his mother would cry and she had every right to. Naruto had supportive and kind parents and yet...he made all the bad choices. There was not even a reason the blond could hide behind, it was his fault, his stupidity...it would wind him in some youth prison. “Was it worth it?” Naruto kept wondering himself this question a lot of times, but that night, he had come to an answer. It wasn’t. He heard the officer enter the alley, he had a gun. He was aiming it right at the trashcan Naruto was hiding behind. The blond looked at him, right in his eyes. The officer was young...too young. He didn’t look much older than Naruto was. But there was a world of difference between them. The raven lowered his gun and then put it back in the holster. “Uchiha, did you find the suspect? Over” The sound came from the walkie talkie. The officer grabbed it, his eyes narrowed while they were still looking right in Naruto’s. “I lost him”  He responded, “Heading back, now, over” Naruto remembered seeing the officer walk out of the ally, hearing the walkie talkie say something about “Sasuke, losing your edge suddenly?” And some small laugher. He knew a few things about that man. One, his name is Sasuke. Two, his surname was Uchiha.  Three, he had given Naruto a chance. It was like he held a mirror in front of him. Of what he has become...of the mistakes he had made and...what he wasn’t. He woke Naruto up. The blond got up from behind the trashcan and stared at the spot the Uchiha stood ten minutes ago. He reached in his pocket and looked at the bag of weed. The blond shook his head and threw it in the trashcan. That night he came home to his distressed mother that had stayed up all night, worried about her son. She just looked up at the door while Naruto had his eyes fixated on the ground. He kicked his shoes off and looked up for a mere second. “Mommy-” His voice broke as he embraced her in a hug, bursting in tears. “I am so...so...sorry...Mommy…” He repeated that sentence several time. Naruto had came to remember the night he left his old troublesome self behind and promised to become a person worthy to face Uchiha Sasuke one day and thank him for what he had done that night. That day had come sooner than Naruto had anticipated. A year had passed and the Uzumaki was in highschool now. A couple of days had passed, the exact amount of time the blond couldn’t recall. But he remembered opening a door and it hit somebody that was passing by in the face. The guy fell and the back of his head hit the fire alarm. The siren was echoing loud through the halls. Naruto immediately checked on the man that was on the ground and the moment his eyes fell on said individual, his heart skipped a beat. “I am fine, I am fine!” The raven rubbed the back of his head with his hand and looked up, his eyes widened slightly and Naruto thought he might have recognised him, but...that wasn’t quite it. Suddenly, the sprinkles turned on and Naruto could hear the raven curse under his breath.The blond extended his hand to the guy. “I am so sorry…” He couldn’t find the words to say at that moment. How do you thank somebody for practically saving you? “Sasuke...Uchiha Sasuke”  It seemed the raven had believed the blond was waiting for him to fill the gap. “Naruto, Uzumaki Naruto, dattebayo!” Naruto scratched the back of his head. In between the time that had passed, the raven looked exactly the same as Naruto had remembered him...and yet...so...different. That Saturday night, the night that had changed Naruto, it was a night Sasuke had mostly forgotten. He only remembered making his way back to the car, but he heard a cry in the park. It sounded like somebody was getting beat up and being the good person he was. He headed towards it, witnessing three people beating a middle-aged man. Sasuke headed towards the scene, without back-up, he knocked two out and cuffed the third. He had helped the man up. He had grabbed the walkie-talkie asking for assistance. He kneeled in front of the injured man and remembered talking to him. However, he couldn’t recall the exact words. Some officers appeared in the park, one of them called out for Sasuke. Saying his full name, speaking of his father that was chief of police. All the information that same man the raven had saved, used it to stalk his saviour to the extend he was desperate enough to get his hands on his hero by murdering his father in cold blood in an attempt to grab Sasuke and have some happy ever after in his sick mind. That attack that had caused his mother to lose her mind and commit suicide. The night that lead his life to fall apart. All of that was the result of one blond, troubled, kid that had impulsively punched an officer  and ran away, instead of holding back and accepting the arrest. A lot of things would have had a different outcome if one small alteration happened. If Naruto hadn’t punched Fugaku almost four years ago... Oxoxoxxox Blue eyes looked outside of the window. The threes were moving at such a speed, the only thing Naruto could see was the green colour. He leaned his chin on his knee, reflecting on what happened and what was exactly going on. His mind seemed to miss the point every time he thought about it. He was on a bus, filled with all kinds of minors that had gotten caught for the...pff...Naruto had lost times of the nights he had spent in jail and was dragged to court. To be a 100% honest, he wasn’t sure what he had exactly done this time. He had shoplifted more often, he couldn’t remember a day he didn’t have drugs with him, alcohol or gotten himself in any other kind of trouble. He hadn’t changed a bit after that night, four years ago. When he we caught for possession of drugs, but lucky for him.At least he wasn’t charged with assaulting an officer even though the blond was very close to punching the officer and running for it. His eyes widened slightly seeing a police car pass the bus. Right, combine a stolen car and a credit card that clearly wasn’t his. Maybe there were more things that Naruto couldn’t recall, but he knew one thing. Besides the fine he had the pay, the community service he was required to do. They also send him to a ‘rehabilitation camp’  so he could ‘reflect’ upon the ‘path’ he was taken. When those words were spoken Naruto thought he was just going to visit some stupid prison where the inmates try to scare him...well, he had been there twice now and both times had been proven to be useless. However, this wasn’t some stupid youth program or visitation. He was send to this ‘military camp’, it had something to do with discipline, but the only thing Naruto thought was that it was a waste of tax money. Poor suckers. He looked around him, there were about 25 people. Some looked not a day over 15, others looked about 21. “Uzumaki, what is up with that look?” Naruto didn’t look at the guy in front right away. “Nothing, dattebayo”  He sighed as he leaned back and closed his eyes. “Man, you scared or something?” The guy chuckled, but shut right up when Naruto opened his eyes and looked at him with a look the guy got to know as the look you don’t want to get from the blond. It was a long walk towards the camp and everybody was already sweaty when they arrived. The high temperature and the burning sun was the worse enemy right now. The Utakata guy was standing there, holding a list with the bunk assignments. He whispered something to Fugaku before both nodded. “Listen up!” The guy shouted, followed by some bullshit talk about rules and bunk assignments. Naruto turned his head, seeing an army vehicle approach. He narrowed his eyes. He noticed that the man had stopped talking and everybody’s eyes were now on the vehicle. The driver hit the breaks and a young man stepped out. “Thanks, Kiro” He said to the driver, before slamming his hand on the bumper, “I didn’t know you guys even managed to get lightweight tactical all terrain vehicle here” “Chief has his ways” The driver answered. The young man turned around and this was the first time Naruto managed to get a good look at him. He was slim, but well trained. His abdomen was trained well. His skin was very pale and Naruto could see some strains from what appears to be sunscreen.   The young man took off his sunglasses. If the blond wasn’t sold by the black booty shorts and the dark green crop top, he was now by those almond shaped eyes with thick eyelashes. “Da-amn” The guy next to Naruto whispered. “Yeah...a two syllable damn indeed” Naruto examined the stranger, from the back boots to the milky legs, to those thighs- that the blond could only assumed had the potential to break his neck- all the way to his neck where a choker was wrapped around. He couldn’t blame the guy, he would have done the same. “Are these the Konoha trouble makers?” Sasuke skimmed the group before his eyes got caught in Naruto’s. “This ought to be fun” He said, “And who are you?” One of the younger members asked. “It doesn’t matter who I am, to you, I am the devil-”  Sasuke stopped talking hearing Naruto chuckle. “Something on your mind, blondie?” “Owh...I just thought that...well...somebody who calls himself the devil wouldn’t have to apply sunscreen, it is ironic because...hell is a pit of fire and it seems, you can’t take the heat...and get burned, dattebayo” Sasuke opened his mouth to say something, but his eyes turned confused which then started looking moody. He shared a look with Utakata who remained quiet before looking back at Naruto. “You want my comeback?” It didn’t sound like a question. Sasuke walked towards Naruto and with one simple move threw his body in the grass. Naruto hissed, not realising what had happened. He felt a pain in his back followed by a pressure on his chest. He looked up seeing Sasuke’s foot on the spot. He was putting some weight on it, but not a lot. The raven looked down at the blond. “What's funny is how you’re about to get ROASTED!” He pushed his foot on his chest before hitting his stomach and then resting it on his crotch.  “You piece of scum, you are already on naughty list”    Naruto scoffed. “I don’t want to jinx stuff between us, but...I am enjoying the naughty list this far” Sasuke shook his head and it seemed he just couldn’t believe the blond. “I was gonna call you blondie, but I figure dumbass fits you better, you are idiotic to believe I would ever sink that low” “I see it now” Naruto had a cocky look on his face, while Sasuke seemed confused, “The family resemblance” “You...dumbass” Sasuke rolled his eyes and removed his foot from Naruto’s crotch. “Hey, I never caught your name” “Because I didn’t throw it at you” Sasuke said. “Puns? Tugging on your pencil skirt and tripping a little on your heels as you walked into the studio, the guards raised their eyebrows. They were used to you in leggings and a t-shirt coming into the building to bother Yoongi, but now you looked like an office worker, your professional attire was the opposite of your usual roll-out-of-bed look. Sighing and rolling your eyes, you walked up to the front security desk.

Can I have the assistant badge for Min Yoongi? You asked politely and the main guard, Hyun Wook, smiled at you. Hyun Wook was your age, he had been working at BigHit for a couple years now and was nothing but nice to you. His casual playfulness was always something that brightened up your day and you would usually talk to him on days when Yoongi was incredibly busy with work.

Of course, miss. What’s the name? He asked, playing up the shtick and you laughed.

Hyun Wook, you know me. You told him, but he shook his head.

‘You know me’ isn’t a name on the list. He murmured and you threw your hands in the air.

Ah! Then I must not be needed! You played into the joke and he laughed.

What’s so funny here? Yoongi called out behind Hyun Wook and you chuckled at the guard, who sighed.

Ah, I guess the fun is over. He whispered to you, as he handed over the badge. You patted him on the shoulder and slung the piece of plastic around your neck. Yoongi walked up, his nonchalant manner was still in-tact, but it didn’t match the suit he was wearing. His eyes widened as he saw you walk towards him.

What? Didn’t think I would wear the skirt? You asked and Yoongi’s cheeks blushed a little. Clearing his throat and looking around you, he tried to recover from his embarrassing reaction.

Yah! You’re late! It’s --- He looked down at his watch to see it was actually 9:55am. Early. He mumbled and rubbed the back of his neck, looking down at the ground.

Uh-huh. Well I wouldn’t want to make a bad first impression at my new job. You spoke confidently, while Yoongi nodded.

That’s good, pabo. He responded and you crossed your arms.

Now, Yoongi oppa, calling your assistant ‘pabo’ is not very nice OR professional. You jeered and Yoongi’s cheeks tinted pink once more, but this time it was in frustration.

Aigoooo, stop telling me what to do, and start acting normal, you’re freaking me out! He shoved your shoulder and you tripped a little on your heels. Hyun Wook stood up and with lightening reflexes caught you so you wouldn’t fall. Smiling at him, you glared at Yoongi.

Stop acting like a little kid! You shoved Yoongi’s shoulder in response and he hit the wall next to him in surprise.

AH! Don’t hit your boss! He exclaimed back, rubbing his shoulder. Hyun Wook started to chuckle and both of you looked at him.

Woah, I just thought it was funny how you two bicker like siblings. Don’t get so mad. He held up his hands in defense and Yoongi looked at the ground.

I wouldn’t say we act like SIBLINGS. He emphasized the word and Hyun Wook shrugged.

The shoving, the name calling, the fact I have to jump in and break it up, sounds like me and my sister, if you ask me. Hyun Wook responded and Yoongi squinted his eyes in annoyance.

We have an interview to get to, Y/N, follow me to your office. He turned on his heels and you scurried after him. As you walked down the hall, you saw album covers and pictures of the guys throughout the years.

Yoongi oppa! Was this you when you auditioned? You stopped to look at a picture of a young Yoongi, standing with his contract in hand, a small smile on his face.

Yah. He responded and kept walking. Come on, I have to clue you in before we head out. He continued and you followed behind him.

You and Yoongi had a strange relationship, what had started as a hatred for one another quickly turned into a friendship. You were in one of Yoongi’s online college courses and had been put into a group project with him. The two of you would bicker over the phone for the entirety of the project, both bitching at the other to shut up, when finally you found out that you both hated the third member of your group. It was that mutual hatred that formed a friendship. The two of you would talk throughout the rest of the class and then he started texting you after the class ended.

You knew something was different about him, when he would only say his name was Yoongi, no surname, and he wouldn’t tell you what he did. One day, you were grabbing a bubble tea on the way to your job as a waitress, when your phone rang. Yoongi wanted to visit you at work. Your hands became clammy as you thought about meeting the mysterious man that you had been talking to for more than a year. Telling him the location, you walked into work as a flurry of panic. Looking around and finally getting one of your coworkers to talk, she told you that BTS was coming to eat and they rented the entire place out. You nodded and walked passed all of the girls who were fighting to serve them when they came in.

Y/N is going to do it. Your manager said and you did a double take. I guess they had requested you, and you were too confused to put two and two together. Finally, when the guys came in, it all made sense. As you brought their drinks, Yoongi smiled at you and made a joke. You rolled your eyes at him and laughed. To Yoongi it was nice to have someone who really didn’t treat him like an idol, you got mad at him for renting out the restaurant and rolled your eyes when all of the other girls working would swoon at him.

The two of you would hang out all the time after that day. Sometimes he would come into the restaurant unannounced, wearing glasses, a beanie, and a mask to try and cover his identity, or you would wander your way into the studio late at night, bringing with you a variety of snacks. The guys would make fun at how inseparable the two of you were, but you would just shrug it off. Yoongi was someone who just understood you.

Snapping back into the present, Yoongi opened the door to your office. You smiled at the little things scattered on the desk. Yoongi had gotten your favorite snacks, you had a mini fridge full of drinks, and he even had a simple black planner with your name embroidered on it. Picking it up, you showed it to him.

How long did you know I was going to be your assistant? You asked as your hands touched the smooth leather. He shrugged and shoved his hands in his pockets.

I may have mentioned your name to the bosses for a couple weeks. He muttered and your jaw dropped.

But you had an assistant a couple weeks ago! You exclaimed and he smiled.

I told you she was an asshole. He retorted and you chuckled. Watching you look around the office in awe, Yoongi smiled. He had been feeling guilty ever since you had to leave your waitressing job. You never said it outright, but he knew it was his fault. You would come to the dorm or studio after a shift and sigh heavily, complaining about how the girls at the job would constantly pick on you.

It never used to be this way. You would tell him on the verge of tears. He knew what you meant to say was, it never used to be this way, but then you came along, which just made him feel that much worse. It got to a boiling point when he went to your apartment to see you trying to clean Yoongi’s slut and BTS whore written all over your notebooks and belongings. You tried to explain that this was the first time it had happened, but Yoongi could tell you were lying. When you finally left, it was a win-lose situation. You were finally free from the mean girls at your job, but you would have never had to leave if it wasn’t for Yoongi being a part of your life.

Now he watched as you bounced around the office, finding little things that would seem simple, but made you extremely happy. Opening the planner, you saw it was full of meetings and interviews.

Wow, we have a busy day. You said more to yourself as you flipped from page to page. What’s this? You asked and pointed to an allotted amount of time that was unmarked. Yoongi smiled.

That’s our time. He said and you looked at him with confusion in your eyes. It’s just a time for us to talk as friends. This job is going to be a bit taxing, so I wanted to make sure that we would have time where we could be friends. He shrugged and you smiled down at the planner.

Wow, the tough rapper Suga has a soft spot! You jeered at him and Yoongi rolled his eyes, trying to cover up his blushing cheeks.

Come on, little miss assistant, we have an interview to get to. He pushed you out the door as you shoved your planner and a pen in your purse. The two of you walked out of the building and made your way into the car. Once you buckled yourself in, you realized you were amidst all of BTS, and were caught up in the instant chaos of idol life.

After a week or so i thought to myself that if i get in a accident god forbid and it was my fault i have to may myself for damages and you know for such a car would be very expensive so i asked my broker if i can changed it to full coverage and so they did. on the day i did the change the girl that worked for my broker and assisting me asked me Klodian you are aware your license is suspended. I said yes and i explained the reason y. So she found this insurance company for a low price and she emailed me the contract to sign and fax it to her. now under the questions which i saw of course latter after i was denied claim i saw they were marked all NO and that was done on computer not hand writing. which of course in this case was done by the girl that helped me. Hi everyone, I would appreciate your ideas regarding the following situation: My son had a car accident last week in a nearby WalMart parking lot (Dallas, Paulding County, GA). He was driving down a parking lane and hit a car which came out of nowhere cutting across the aisle. Both vehicles had extensive damage (front of the vehicle on our car, and driver side on the other car). There was a gentleman who saw everything and called 911. The sheriff's deputy arrived at the scene promptly. He explained there would be an accident report, but since this happened in a private parking lot, he was not in a position to state who was at fault. I got the report the other day and it states the facts about the accident and gives the contact information for the witness. I have spoken with the other driver's insurance company three times and I just found out that their claims rep has determined that my son was at fault, so they have denied my claim. The claim with them was actually originally filed by the other driver. I politely asked to speak with a supervisor and was advised that I should expect to receive a call from a supervisor soon. I did not get a chance to talk to my insurance rep after I found out the other insurance denied the claim, but I am not sure if there is anything my insurance can do for us, especially given the fact that we only have liablity coverage on this vehicle (no collision coverage either). I think it is really outrageous how they could claim my son was at fault, if all evidence points to the fact that their insured was driving across the parking lanes and obviously did not see our car. I cannot find anything online (like traffic regulations) that explicitly says that the driver cutting across the parking lanes is at fault if there is a collision, but I think it is common sense that this should be the responsible party! If anyone has had a similar experience, or has any suggestions, your help will be very much appreciated!""

Lots of info, sorry! My car was parked on the street and hit during the night. I drove the car to the repair place the following morning and the airbag deployed on the way there. (Stupid, I know, I wasn't thinking). My insurance company, GEICO is insisting that the damage is not consistent with a hit and run accident. They have taken recorded statements from me and my boyfriend. They have contracted an independent accident reconstructionist to read the airbag deployment. The reconstructionist originally told me that he was unable to retrieve the data, but the insurance company is now telling me that he was able to get a partial reading. And that it shows that the airbag deployed as a result of impact. The airbag did not actually fully deploy. There is no powder or injury to me to justify a complete deployment. Does anybody know if they have the right to deny my claim based on suspicion? They keep trying to make me say that my boyfriend was driving the car, which he wasn't. We were in the house together all night. Also: car was in previous fire; severe damage to front of car, all repaired. accident happened in CA, full coverage policy written in GA I know its a lot of info. Passing by the other gangs’ turfs without much concern, the trio finally found themselves in front of the quaint cottage home of Roseanne, also known as Momma Dweit. Dweit wasn’t her surname or her maiden name, however. It was more a term of endearment from her only son.

One time at dinner, Roseanne commented to Ace and Tendorel about how Dweit had a phase as a child where he named everything he wanted as “Dweit’s”. Dweit’s baseball, Dweit’s dinner, Dweit’s aggrevated-assault claim that gave him lots and lots of Dweit’s cash. So growing up, he simply started calling anything important to him as “Dweit” or “Dweit’s”.

If that’s the case, Ace thought, then Dweit may have introduced Holly as “Wife Dweit” or “Dweit’s Wife”.

That probably didn’t help their vitriol with each other.

Dweit sighed, getting a bit annoyed about the conversation going on as they walked to the front. “The pandaren girl was a rookie, Tender. As we said again and again, we weren’t going to let anyone hurt you.”

“But it did hurt my feelings to be manipulated so.” Tendorel placed his hand to his chest, wincing. “If she wasn’t a rookie, she could have locked me into a chair for the rest of my life!”

Ace frowned. “I wouldn’t have done that if I thought you were going to be in danger, Tendorel. You know me better than that.”

Tendorel sighed. “But you didn’t know her that well!”

“Alright, ya big baby. Look, you can talk to Momma Dweit about this. She’ll tell you the exact same thing as I did. When you know Gadgetzan as well as a goblin, you know when you’re screwed and when you got a rookie mugger.”

Tendorel sighed. “Fine. I’m sure she’ll vouch for me.”

“I...doubt that, Tender.” Ace smiled apologetically.

Grinning once more, Dweit walked to the door. If what the pandaren said is true, then they had the hit set on them from mail. That means that Holly and Denarye weren’t in the city yet. If he knows Holly, then she’s as much of a cheapskate as he is and wouldn’t have used the portals either.

He knocked on the door. After a few seconds, he noted there was no reply.

“Hm. She’s usually not out.” Dweit knocked on the door once more. Still no response.

“I wonder where-” Dweit stopped speaking, moving his hand to his chin as he contemplated something.

“....postage costs about 25 silver to send fast.”

“What was that, Dweit?” Tendorel walked over to Dweit, who was standing at the door for a few more seconds than usual.

“......that’s too expensive.....” Dweit moved his hand to the door handle and jiggled it. Sure enough, the door was unlocked. His eyes widened as he burst the door open and ran in, immediately turning to the living room.

What he saw was enough to make Dweit’s expression turn to pure despair. There, laying on the ground, was the body of a headless goblin woman, blood splattered all across the room. When Ace walked in, she moved her hand over her mouth. Tendorel peered in and almost vomited.

“M-...Mom.....MAMA DWEIT...NO!” Dweit fell to the ground before the bloody, headless corpse, tears streaming down his gaunt face.

Ace winced. “I...light’s grace, she’s serious. She’s serious. She’s serious...”

Dweit looked over at Ace with his eyes watered. “FIX HER, ACE. FIX HER, DAMMIT.”

Ace stammered. “I...D-Dweit, I can’t...if I resurrect her now, she would still be dead. Her head is gone. I can’t do...anything-”

“WHAT DO I HAVE YOU HERE FO-” Dweit moved his hands to his head, screaming out in anguish. “I’LL KILL HER. I’LL KILL HER FOR THIS!”

At this, the room began to quake slightly. The two of them saw what was going on and knew it shouldn’t continue. Tendorel elected to move forward, placing his hand on the goblin’s back. “Dweit...calm down. We will find out what to do.”

“I....I....” Dweit was stammering. For the first time, he was at a loss for words. He sat up slowly and the quaking stopped. He moved his hand to the goblin’s back, sniffing. He then reached over for the purse.

“Oh, Dweit, come on.” Ace winced.

“This is what she would want.....” Dweit sighed, taking out her personal effects. Everything from her expired license to her hairbrush. Money was noticeably absent, however. He looked at the ID, sniffing. “Everything to her s......so-.....soooooooooooooon of a BITCH!”

“C-calm down, Dweit, don’t quake the house. This is...”

“THIS AIN’T MY MOTHER!” He spat out, tossing the card over to them. “It’s just some broad.”

Ace grabbed the card and took a look. Sure enough, the name was “Roxanne”.

“W...what? Why would she...?”

“It’s because she didn’t want to kill Momma Dweit. She wanted to use her as bait.”

“And this is...”

“Just another sick part of the game.” Dweit gripped the purse. “The poor girl probably tried to rob them. She was young by the looks of the ID. She bit off more than she could chew.”

“So Denarye...?”

“Hell no.” Dweit replied to Tendorel. “This wound is absolutely her doing. I know a Holly swing when I see it.”

“Hm...” Tendorel couldn’t help but still be sickened by the room. What sort of monster did Dweit marry...? How on earth did he even survive up to this point?

“Ah!”

The two looked over at Ace, who had gasped out as she moved her hand over her mouth. She was looking towards a mirror in the room. The two of them looked over and Dweit visibly grimaced. “Ah...dammit...”

The mirror was smeared with blood. Though the handwriting was noticeably atrocious, it was clear what the message said.

“See you next Time.”

Ace grimaced. “She’ll see us next time...why did she leave a message like that? It...doesn’t seem cryptic.”

Tendorel frowned. “To have a note written in a victim’s blood...it’s a bit...theatrical.”

“Dammit...” Dweit sighed. “She knows where the treasure is.”

“Eh?” Ace frowned. “What do you mean?”

“The message....’See you next Time’.” Dweit looked over at the duo, a frown prominent on his face. “I’ll tell you two....the greatest secret of Dweit’s Treasure. I left it in another time entirely.”

The two elves raised their brows, looking genuinely surprised. “You put your treasure in the Caverns of Time?!”

“Kinda.” Dweit sighed. “We do need to go there, though.” He looked over at the body. “I’ll call the nearby cleaner to deal with this. Old Chad knows how to deal with things discreetly. Then we can get movin’...”

“I....worry about the life we lead sometimes.” Tendorel moved his hand to his mouth, wiping away some excess vomit.

“Zo...zhe great Dveit, vhimpperin like a baby at zhe zight of zhe lost mommy?”

Dweit watched the figure in the shadows, grinning. “What can I say? I have a bleedin’ heart. You don’t seem to believe it.”

“Quite frankly, it iz of no conzern to me vhether or not I vant to believe it. It z’ill coinzides with zhe factz.” The shadowy figure moved his hand out to show a photo. Dweit was momentarily impressed by the quality of the thing. It had the trio exiting Gadgetzan after the disaster in his momma’s house. “How did you..?”

“Ah, Mr. Dveit.” The figure grinned. ‘Ve have been vatchin’ zhe tree of you for a vhile. Ve knew of zhe treazure you have locked avay somevhere. To zhink it vas already under our nozez.”

“That’s how it goes, I suppose.” Dweit smirked. “Now can I continue the story, or are you going to keep interrupting me?”

“Ah, by all meanz, Mr. Dveit. It iz not like anyvon zhall bother uz here.”

“After all, mine demize zhall not come for some thouzand yearz from now. And mine rezurrection not fer a couple yearz later.”
