I think we’re all on the same page about the full moon not just making mermaids act differently, but making them act on some kind of “true” or subconscious desire. but I wanted to look more closely at the full moon effect on all our girlies and what it means.

cleo’s larger journey is to self-assurance from where she starts as mostly an ingenue. under the full moon she is confident and has a clear ability that makes her stand out. cleo has spent most of her life as best friends of an absolute beast star athlete, and of a science whiz. in 1x20 she speaks about helping lewis like it’s the first favor she’s ever been able to offer him. her siren power is a special talent unique to her which sets her apart from her friends. she finally commands and basks in all this positive attention, instead of being embarrassed in the limelight like she was at the start of the ep.

moonstruck emma most obviously abandons all responsibility, unburdening herself for maybe the first time in her life. she is flirtatious with byron and with rikki (even drunk I’ve never called a platonic friend baby I’m just saying). she also has a big appetite, which I only recently was thinking about. emma is a lifelong athlete with an extremely strict diet. even at a slumber party she has prepared “sensible” snacks. under the moon’s influence she gives herself freedom to literally eat whatever she wants. and of course she very adamantly wants to stay a mermaid, flying in the face of her usual cautiousness, and is just enjoying that sweet mermaid life.

and rikki has much more awareness during the full moon, not just because she is controlling the effects better but because she is not usually suppressing her impulses. she generally speaks her mind and acts on what she wants anyway, so there isn’t as much for the moon to “reveal.” instead it prompts her to self-isolate, succumbing to her existing fear of not belonging or of being some kind of liability. she acts on her attraction to zane after admitting in 1x6 that she’s insecure about being liked. and she verbalizes her fears and insecurities to somebody besides her friend’s kid brother for the first time.

the full moon eps are such a fun silly way to be like, “let’s make everyone do something crazy and then immediately retcon it” but idk, even though none of these are hot takes I just like how it reveals a lot about our besties

Cleo Sertori from H2O Just Add Water

1. She doesn’t like change

Out of the trio Cleo was the one most reluctant to accepting that she was a mermaid, and who can blame her? That’s a lot of tail to get used to.

2. She has a special interest in marine life

She works at a marine life institute and has shown her love for marine life multiple times. Also this scene in particular, dressing up as specifically a “Portuguese Man O’War” and then having to explain that it’s a kind of jellyfish, autistic mood.

3. She is often blunt in conversation

She says it like it is, and I love her for it.

4. She has a strong sense of justice

Cleo has a strong sense of justice, even managing to get caught in a net because she was trying to save some turtles from getting caught.

anyways here’s my incomplete list of reasons why trans boy Lewis just makes sense to me:

when he swims he wears a full rash guard, and he never goes shirtless, despite the fact we see other boys on the show shirtless

the one time we see him shirtless, in 2x01 (so not exactly his choice) he has his arms crossed over his chest the entire time -

he is pretty blasé when Rikki and Emma claim to be naked, almost like he’s used to sharing locker rooms and such with girls/women and is thus not bothered

similarly, is often wanting to sleepover with the girls on the full moon to protect them, but again is doesn't seem bothered about the implications of a co-ed sleepover, almost like he’s used to sleeping over with girls

he has an inherent understanding of the importance of keeping the girls’ secret, unlike Zane who needs the consequences shoved in his face. Lewis gets it immediately. almost like has his own secret, his own difference.

everything about the way he dresses has mega transmasc energy. it just does. the short sleeve button up, baggy cargo shorts combo? Faded graphic tee + frayed jeans + off brand vans? some stupid fucking hat?

that one scene where Cleo’s dad is like “the male of the species is predatory” and Lewis just gives him a blank stare and asks if he wants a biscuit. that hypermasculinity bullshit flew right past him.

this one requires us to accept Rikki is bi/queer, but that doesn't strike me as controversial. same taste in music as Rikki, meaning he probably listens to alternative rock and punk music (knowing Rikki). Very queer genres.

we really don’t talk enough about how rikki coming off as mean/controlling in s3 is probably because she’s trying to overcompensate and fill the void of where emma used to be - encouraging her to do her schoolwork, helping to protect the secret, literally her thematic counterpart meant to balance out her hot headedness. without her there it’s like rikki has to play two roles and can barely balance either one.

i mean her life kinda crumbles without emma around. going into financial debt, breaking up with her boyfriend because he cheated on her, the moonpool being destroyed. at the same time she has to deal with a new girl coming into the group (and her jealousy surrounding that) as well as comforting cleo when lewis left, putting aside her own sadness at a close friend leaving in order to be there for cleo.

#upon further inspection im actually in my s3 rikki era #even when Emma isn’t there and isn’t being mentioned she is still incredibly present #i hope this makes sense it’s hard to put some things into words exactly how i would like #h2o just add water #rikki chadwick #emma gilbert #i like that the show didn’t make Bella have Emma’s exact personality but at the same time giving her no personality was not the move either #bc everything is not evenly distributed ya know
