#google docs alternative

okay so google drive is being a lil sketchy w AI stuff and it frankly makes me just uncomfy enough to look for an alternative.
the one that i have landed on (for now) is obsidian bc it works nicely for what i typically use google docs for (outside of academic stuff for college) and the reviews on the app store were MUCH better than evernote, which i also considered. so here are a list of what i consider pros and cons
pros
the organization! the style of organization works really well for me personally, with folders and the ability to link to other notes. this helps me keep character development and world building uncluttered during the process
tagging! you can set tags within each file, or vault, in order to better find notes or graphics. i haven't explored this a ton yet BUT it seems promising especially when files get bigger and more complicated
themes! you can customize the colors and themes inside the app (im using 80s neon rn) which isnt super critical for me but is helpful for people who benefit from being able to change that (i personally just enjoy it)
free use of like 99% of the app! the app itself is free and no app features are "off limits" without payment. vvv
cons
does NOT sync automatically. you CAN sync between devices but it is an $8 monthly subscription which i just cant afford on top of other monthly payments rn. maybe one day. (other payment plan is a $50/year fee for commercial use and priority support)
a little complicated. theres no real tutorial so anything beyond basics i've figured out by hitting buttons until they did something. if youre up for a little trial n error learning or asking other people about it, its fine

Do you guys (gender-neutral) know of a good alternative to Google Docs? I've been using it for years and I want to move my writing off of it. Because Google is planning to start this, and I don't want that to happen to my writing. Even if it's in a really rough state.
I should also explain my current writing system (as of August 2023). This is extremely simplified by the way, also there is some overlap between different programs/apps.
~My current writing system~
Google Docs: Online backup of drafts, random lore tidbits, practice drafts, chapter outlines, story arc outlines, character sheets, basic worldbuilding, etc. The bulk of my writing stuff happens here.
LibreOffice: Everything that Google Docs does but offline
Pluot: Lore, detailed worldbuilding, character sheets, story arc outlines, chapter outlines
Notion: Visualizing timelines, compiling everything into a "wiki"
Also, just to let you know, I'm on a pretty strict budget. So I can't afford the super-expensive programs or subscription services. I'd prefer to use something that's free, or super cheap.

A Google Docs alternative is LibreOffice (found here: www(.)libreoffice(.)org/ without all the parentheses) My computer guy actually introduced me to what I've recently learned is the previous version of that, OpenOffice! That one is really more like the store brand Microsoft Word; it's okay, it just kinda feels... off when using it. I haven't gotten the chance to use LibreOffice yet, but I hear nice things!
Ooo I totally forgot about OpenOffice. I used it a lot in like 2012ish. I'll have to check into LibreOffice. Thanks!

Help
Hey y'all, Currently trying to find a good, free Alternitve to Google Docs after learning about the whole "Google is stealing user data from drive users to train AI!" rumor. (I say Rumor because I do not know how true it is.)
I'd love recommendations, as long as they're free and can cross save across devices. (I'd also love a dark mode, but it's not required lol)
Thanks!!

Alternatives to google docs
For various reasons, this is now a hot topic. I'm putting my favorites here, please add more in your reblogs. I'm not pointing to Microsoft Word because I hate it.
Local on your computer:
1.
Tumblr media
LibreOffice (https://www.libreoffice.org/), Win, Linux, Mac.
Looks like early 2000 Word, works great, imports all formats. Saves in OpenDocumentFormat. Combine with something like Dropbox for Cloud Backup.
2.
Tumblr media
FocusWriter (https://gottcode.org/focuswriter/) Win, Linux.
Super customizable to make it look pretty, all toolbars hide to be as non-distracting as possible. Can make typewriter sounds as you type, and you can set daily wordcount goals. Saves in OpenDocumentFormat. Combine with something like Dropbox for Cloud Backup.
3.
Scrivener (https://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener/overview) Win, Mac, iOS
The lovechild of so many writers. Too many things to fiddle with for me, but I'm sure someone else can sing its praises. You can put the database folder into a Dropbox folder for cloud saving (but make sure to always close the program before shutting down).
Web-based:
4.
Tumblr media
Reedsy bookeditor (https://reedsy.com/write-a-book) Browser based, works on Firefox on Android. Be aware that they also have a TOS that forbids pornography on publicly shared documents.
My current writing program. Just enough features to be helpful, not so many that I start fiddling. Writing is chapter based, exports to docx, epub, pdf. You can share chapters (for beta reading) with other people registered at Reedsy.
5.
Novelpad (https://novelpad.co/) Browser based.
Looks very promising, there's a youtuber with really informative videos about it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHN8TnwjG1g). I wanted to love it, but the editor didn't work on Firefox on my phone. It might now, but I'm reluctant to switch again.
------
So, this is my list. Please add more suggestions in reblogs.

Finally got to paint something a little more proper for my project. Paleolithic kids see a dragon come down from the sky 🐉
a few more doodles of my OCs Tam Kujo below >>
drew this one in the span of three days during class time :p. A few lines here and there while I wait for the prof to set up the slides and start the class. Kept going until I felt like not adding anymore.

as the first polls are coming to an end I'd really like to make a list like 'books tumblr has read' somewhere, but i dont know which platform would be suitable
on goodreads everyone can add to lists (i think) which would be against the point and on storygraph you cant even create lists...
Does anyone have an idea?

Mulan Family Tree
Pictured below is the family tree for Fa Mulan a long while before 434 AD to 980 AD.
Tumblr media
495 AD
Fa Mulan is born to two loving parents. A mother named Fa Li and a father named Fa Zhou. The family (including Grandmother Fa) resides on a beautiful farm in a small village in The Empire of Cathay.
511 AD
Now 16, Fa Mulan goes to see the Matchmaker in hopes of being titled a "perfect bride". Unfortunately it goes horribly wrong and she is cast out by the Matchmaker. She swiftly returns home distraught where her father comforts her. Doubly unfortunately, the Emperor's Counselor has arrived to conscript one man from every household to fight a rising Rouran invasion. Unwilling to let her injured father go to war, Mulan takes his place.
On the way to the war camp Mulan is startled by her guardian Mushu. He is going to help her become a war hero (unbeknownst to her), and help keep her alive. At the war camp Mulan comes up with the masculine name, Fa Ping and immediately makes enemies of her fellow conscripts. General Li leaves with all the experienced soldiers to fight Shan Yu. It is now up to Captain Li Shang to train all the inexperienced soldiers for battle. Li Shang shoots an arrow on top of a pole and tells the soldiers that they will need discipline and strength (represented by two weights) to reach the arrow. Over the next couple of months Mulan and her fellow soldiers become friends and get quite proficient during training. All of this culminates when Mulan retrieves the arrow and the army is summoned to the front lines by "General Li".
512 AD
The army passes through many villages on the way to meet General Li. Their carefree attitude is dashed upon seeing the burnt village and the massacre where Li Shang's father is found dead. The army then heads for the Tung Shao Pass in hopes of meeting Shan Yu and his Rouran army before they reach the Imperial City. Unfortunately Mushu sets off a cannon exposing their position to Shan Yu and his army. In a move both brilliant and idiotic, Mulan buries the entire Rouran army under an avalanche by shooting a cannon at a nearby mountain. Unfortunately Mulan is injured and it is revealed that she is actually a woman pretending to be a male soldier. Instead of being executed for high treason, Li Shang spares her life and leaves her in the mountain pass.
Mulan decides to go home but spots a small group of Rouran (including Shan Yu) that survived the avalanche making their way to the Imperial City. She races to intercept Li Shang to warn him but is met with indifference and coldness. She is ultimately proven right when the surviving Rourans kidnap the Emperor and lock themselves in the Palace. Mulan quickly devises a plan and is joined by Li Shang and her three friends to rescue the Emperor. The group manage to knock out the Rouran guards and free the Emperor. Unfortunately Mulan is chased by Shan Yu onto the roof. Mulan uses her ingenuity to instead trap him on the roof and Mushu uses a firework to finally kill Shan Yu.
Mulan is offered a position on the Emperors Council but declines. So instead the Emperor gives Mulan his medallion so her family will know what she has done for him and Shan Yu's sword so the world will know what she has done for the Empire of Cathay. She returns home and is met by her father who immediately embraces her. Li Shang arrives not long after in hopes of starting a relationship with Mulan.
520 AD
After many years of seeing the Empire, discovering what makes her happy, and being employed as the Emperor's Councilmember, Mulan and Shang marry and start a family.
980 AD
Another prominent figure is born in the Li family, descended from Fa Mulan and Li Shang named Li Chen.
The Empire of Cathay (~2070 BC – 1911 AD) to China (1911 AD – Present)
Pictured below is the approximate geographical map for the Empire of Cathay in 511 AD.
Tumblr media
This Empire was founded in ~2070 BC and has gone through many different names and changes from that time. The most recent of which takes place in 1911 AD with the dissolution of the Empire and the formation of the country; China (pictured below; the red with yellow dots and the yellow with red dots).
Tumblr media
Additional Information
I have spent almost two years on this massive project now and I'm so glad I can finally share it! Mulan was quite difficult to add to the tree as she is Chinese and most Disney characters are white. I eventually found a loophole after adding non-Disney characters after running out of Disney characters to add and getting bored. Mulan was picked to go first via the poll that was done so I'll do the rest of the Princess's on the poll in their popularity order. I'm also new to Tumblr so let me know if the formatting is weird and needs improving. Thanks for reading!

if you don't have access to word, is there a way to write directly into ao3?
You can always write directly into ao3 where you go to post, and some people prefer this, but be aware that it doesn't automatically save and won't save if you close the tab. Ao3 encourage you to have a back-up copy of what you write there in the "work text". So it is possible to write directly on ao3, but I would recommend writing elsewhere to avoid loss of the text.

Looking for possible alternatives for Google Docs
Considering the state of the world currently and especially regarding AI, I wanted to get a hold on possible alternatives for Google Docs, but nothing I’ve seen so far has appealed to me
I’m looking for apps that might be used for writing with these features:
1. Mobile portability
I write primarily using my phone, but to post stuff on ao3 I need to use the computer because the interface is awful on mobile, so it has to be an app I could use both on my phone and on my computer.
2. Offline usage
I don’t always have internet and don’t want to lose all progress I might have done offline.
3. Free or cheap (preferably free)
I’m Brazilian. Everything that costs a dollar will cost FIVE TIMES the price to me, so I’m not doing the bullshit that Scrivener does that would force me to pay for TWO licenses, which would unironically cost HALF the money I make in a month. It’s either free or under 100 reais (about 20 dollars, but the number might go down if the dollar gets more expensive).
4. Simple and ORGANIZED interface
I’m a slow learner and frankly don’t care about fancy writing stuff that I’m never gonna use. Please, I don’t want those apps that have a shit ton of stuff splashed on the screen, they’ll just confuse me more than anything and I’ll never use any of that trash. Just give me a word counter and I’ll be happy.
— —
For now I’m sticking with Google docs, it’s the best option to me even if it starts lagging after about 40k words. It seems better than every other option I’ve come across.
But if anyone knows of a better app I could use, please let me know! 🙏🙏🙏

The trees know Adam by name, or something like it. There’s a word that means him, though it’s not a word you can actually say out loud. They know him in a similar way to how Adam knows himself, which is entirely and not at all.
I’m fine, I’m just pondering adam parrish’s identity crisis for fun

Alts to google docs
google data scraping docs and EVERYTHING is my 13th reason (they even got gmail too :((()
anyhoo. here’s alts to google docs bc ill be damned if richy rich people with ai take writers ideas and use it as their own
- OfficeSuite is pretty cool. Its what im currently using and you dont have to pay for anything unless you want some add-on. It’s basically microsoft word but you dont have to pay anything
- Word docs is... ok, in my experience. I used it in my ye olde days when I began writing fanfiction. However, you gotta pay to download and I’m too cheap to spend a dime to write two dudes kissing :/
- Scriviner: I never used this software, and it’s not free. However, I heard a bunch of positive reviews and their format looks nice so do with that information as you will
- Reedsy: accessible everywhere, free, and can export to paperback. I use it to quadruple and quintuple backup my works :)))
- LibreOffice: free and basically like microsoft word. Never used it before, but the reviews sound good
remember yall. eat the rich and add seasoning. good day <3
