one piece will have women characters with the most intricate and emotional backstories, most complicated psyches, most humanizing flaws, and most rich and dimensional personalities. these women will play large and not only important but often central roles in the story, have standalone identities and goals outside of the men characters, and be given as much thought and attention as any other character. these women will also however (somehow ?) have ridiculously sexist designs that are almost insulting to the depth of the characters underneath them. this remains to this day one of the most fascinating examples of misogyny in anime.
