now this is totally up to you if you have the time to spend on this, but this is my first year watching the races, and while I've been doing some background research to get up to speed, there is still a lot i don't know. i trust your judgment so what are some races and/or f1 adjacent things i should look into? i'm going through your McLaren list and have watched the last 4 seasons of dts and the brawn documentary. are there any other books/ documentaries/ races (especially seb's) / old youtube videos that are lost in the void that i should also check out?

i completely get how daunting it can be as a new fan in the sport. when i was getting back into f1 it also took me some time to get back up to speed with everything, especially all the techy stuff; i honestly learned the most through just watching the races (old and new), bc you get to see all the strategies play out, the pit-stops, the overtakes etc. and the terminology just becomes much easier to understand through sheer exposure. there are also some really cool f1 data analysis blogs you might want to follow on twt/x if you want some more detailed tech analysis and graphs if you’re into that sort of thing: (x)

as for seb, oh there’s a whole arsenal of recs i have!

monza 2008, rise of torro rosso wunderkind; i presume you already know the lore with that one but ig you can never get tired of it.

abu dhabi 2010, world championship no.1 “du bist weltmeister!”

interlagos 2012, the infamous one. this one’s a rollercoaster, chaos everywhere and the manifestation of murphy’s law: anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. amidst a title battle against nando, seb was fighting the weather, bruno senna’s front wing, a damaged side-pod, no radio, and somehow managed to claim p6 to win the championship

malaysia 2013, multi-21 (iconique), he was faster, deal with it. 💅

singapore 2013, domination masterclass from quali to the race. (also just all of his singapore wins...lion of singapore and all that)

india 2013, title no.3 secured, changed tyres on lap 2 and came out p17, was third by only lap 13 and then won the race by nearly 30 seconds. it was also his sixth win in a row. he went on to win three more. speaks for itself. also this:

malaysia 2015, first win with ferrari, can't forget that one, also features sewis’ gay knee-touching on the podium.

germany 2019, CHAOS, in which merc got bewitched by the special livery curse 😅, with crashes, spins, 50-second long pit stops, and also features one of seb’s best drives from p20 -> p2

i also highly recommend watching Floz's fan-made docus on youtube about 'the silver war' (there are also docus for the 2014 and 2015 seasons) as well as the merc v ferrari (lewis vs seb) 2017 fight and 'fight for five' in 2018, they're so much better than dts and actually give a full run-down of what happened during the season, with all the action on-track, with interviews and providing all the context! it's so well-edited as well (you literally feel like you're watching a movie about all of the seasons) and they are just incredibly fun to watch.

in general, i love rewatching races from 2017/18 (literally my comfort seasons), personal favs include spain 2017 (strategy galore and lewis v seb), baku 2017 (for obv reasons), austin 2017; and basically the 2018 season in its entirety...

as for books, there are many driver autobiographies e.g. jb (he’s even got two lmao), mark webbah etc. but i think the best f1 book out there is adrian newey’s memoir ‘how to build a car’ if you want lore + great insight into cars!

i’d also recommend watching some older races (i could do a separate post on which ones are my personal favs) but it’s all up to you in the end! go digging, look around on yt for some highlights and just keep exploring! 🫶💜

Okay I'm gonna say it:

I think family channels [channels in this case includes [but isn't limited to]: YouTube, Tiktok, twitch, instagram, etc] where the kids are under age should be illegal. [Or at the very least a lot more laws about it]

Like it's so dangerous. If it's an occasional "Haha, look at this cute video of us/cute pic" [personally even that is :// to me, but I know in those cases its normally just sharing] that's one thing, but accounts dedicated to your children ??

Like how do you not realize posting all your kids interests, when they were born, y'alls location, if they're homeschooled/go to public school, the park y'all go to, their full name, when/where y'all go on vacations, etc etc IS SO FUCKING UNSAFE ???? Like internet 101.

& maybe you're reading this & you're like "I don't share my exact location 🙄/the family channel I follow has never said their location" but w/ the right skills [or knowing the right people] you can easily find where somewhere is ? Like there's this dude [& no hate to him he seems cool**] who's literally known for seeing a sign or grass & getting almost near exact to where that place is w/o more info [& I assume he spent ages learning all that stuff, but my point is, it's possible] ? Also, on a darker note, a guy literally found someone he was stalking through the **reflection** on her glasses.

Plus that's not even to mention how the kid will feel when they're grown up.

Now this post may be fake [I'm not saying it is or isn't**], but I feel it greatly illustrates the very probable reality of being raised in this environment:

In the comments OP says her parents only stopped when one of her siblings tried to commit suicide, as well as saying she would give up all her money to feel safe, because she's constantly paranoid & feels like she's being watched. OP also said: "I truly believe no changes will be made until a child is killed as a result of their parents over sharing online. It shouldn’t have to get to that point" which... I agree. I think people online can yell as much as possible, but until a kid is actually kidnapped &/or killed due to this, I don't think platform's, let alone governments, will care.

I know being poor isn't fun [I am poor & grew up poor] but money isn't worth exploiting your child/kids, putting them in danger, & inflicting this sort of trauma on them.

Plus I've seen SO. MANY. Kid accounts that are like "[baby's name] @[mom] / @[dad]" & you click on one/both of the parents profiles &... The parents accounts are private... Like clearly you understand wanting privacy, but you can't extend that to a child who doesn't know what their foot is let alone the implications of having thousands->millions of followers ???

Sorry if this makes zero sense, it's 3AM, but I hate family accounts so much. It's easy to put up a front & I'm sure some of those kids genuinely love it & in 20 years time they're like "No it was great I loved that !!!! Theres nothing I want down tbh. & I'm psyched I basically got my own platform right away & didn't have to grind for it" But I feel like those kids will be in the minority, while MOST will be like the post above, or at the VERY least, they'll wish a lot wasn't filmed & posted for millions to see.... :/

ALSO TO BE CLEAR !!! THIS IS ABOUT FAMILY CHANNELS. Teens having their on socials is chill imo [but be safe ofc**] & occasionally sharing a family pic is fine. But centering an account around your family/kids is what my issues is***

Hey! I followed you because I think your art is super funky and awesome and cool and I've been mildly interested in Sonic for awhile now. Most of my content is very secondhand, like commentary videos and the Snapcube dubs.

To make a long story short, I want to get into Sonic. Like for realsies. There's so much content out there and I don't know anyone personally who enjoys it, so how do you suggest I approach this?

It really depends on what you're most interested in! Sonic is a franchise that spans different mediums and has been on-going for a long time, so there's a lot of content with very different vibes and varying levels of quality (though that's subjective of course).

I'd say that probably the best way overall to get familiar with the characters and world as a newcomer is to read the IDW comics! They're very well-written, have gorgeous art, and are easily accessible to new fans while still having lots of references to previous installments. They take place directly after Sonic Forces, but they summarize the events of that game so don't worry about needing that context. There's also a couple of mini-series to check out!

There's the games of course, which are the main canon that the IDW comics build off of/are technically a part of. I would personally recommend Sonic Adventure 2, it's my favorite game and though basically everyone calls it their favorite, like, it's for a reason. SA2 for me is the best game overall, as its story is great, the gameplay is fun and works perfectly alongside the story, and it's just full of charm. It's the most cohesive Sonic game imo, everything feels so interconnected and masterfully woven together, I love playing it. Don't be scared off by the "2" in the title btw, though there are some elements from Sonic Adventure that are referenced, you can still totally enjoy it without knowing anything about the first game as it's mainly standalone.

^ (also sidenote but sa2's story got a littleee muddled by the english localization, its not the worst but i'd recommend this video that goes over the story in detail with an emphasis on the original japanese script. there used to be an upload of the jp cutscenes with faithful eng subtitles but unfortunately last year the channel got nuked and there weren't any backups T_T im still not over it)

When it comes to recommending games it sort of depends on whether you plan on actually playing them yourself or just watching someone else play them, because there's a lot of Sonic games that have really good stories but subpar gameplay, or games that don't really have a story but good gameplay. Also everyone has their own preferences when it comes to types of games so there's that too.

Sonic is a franchise that both sort of has an overarching story (or at least they did back in the early 2000s when the games had a story that was built upon with each game, something that we might be finally returning to with Sonic Frontiers!) and also has many games and cartoons where they're kind of separate from all of that and function as standalone stories or just take place in their own universes entirely. There's many different canons across the different mediums, but the main one is the mainline games + IDW + now Sonic Prime on Netflix, which is apparently also canon to the main game canon!

Sorry if this is overwhelming >< it's a big franchise with a lot of different stuff and different canons and a wonky timeline so it's sort of hard to pinpoint the exact things a new fan """"should"""" check out. I'd say check out the IDW comics and then see if any of the games (or just their cutscenes in a compilation on YouTube lol) spark your interest!

And I say this every time I get these kinds of asks about a fandom I'm in, but PLEASE feel free to send me another ask or even shoot me a dm if you're comfortable if you want more specific advice or are confused about something, I literally love nothing more than talking about sonic the hedgehog at length. (Although I'd prefer if you sent them to my main @infizero as I use this account mainly just for art ^_^)

ohhhhh this one is a hard one because I definitely do, but it's so hard to figure out which things I'm never going to reread/rewatch because I really love rewatching/rereading stuff. hm, this is kind of a strange one, but everymanhybrid on youtube is a horror series that I really really loved but I don't think I'm ever gonna rewatch, at least not in its entirety. Not because it was too scary or anything, but because it's long as fuck and also extremely confusing. you have to keep up with so many different forms of media (the youtube videos are a part of it but you have to keep up with multiple twitter accounts to understand wtf is going on in the story), so it's just tiring to try and pull everything up and go back through all of it at once. I've definitely rewatched the nightmind explained videos on it since it does a good job summarizing everything, but I've only gone through the full gamut of it once and I don't think I'm ever gonna do that again

(highly recommend emh if you are interested in obscure youtube homemade horror. REALLY great acting and a super complicated storyline, but also it's confusing as hell to get into)

It’s been a very long time since I have been here. Life has been just a roller coaster for me. Yeah, cliche, I know. But I’m getting through life. Long story short, I moved, graduated college, now work in healthcare, came out to my mom and siblings. So that cat is out of the bag. Oh, and I have two pets. I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression and am now on meds to keep myself together. I feel so much better, but those insecurities are still there. Especially with the current climate that is out there.

The Trump years were not easy. I am already in a strained relationship with my father, and he is in the camp that Trump was ordained by god to be president. It was hard to hear him talk terrible things that were full of such hate. This is the man I looked up to as a kid. And now we just don’t talk. I don’t want to talk about the details leading up to it, but our relationship isn’t all that great. When I was still in Utah, I was having panic attacks (which I didn’t know where that), and it made it so much worse that I knew that I couldn’t ask my dad for help during those times. But I am focusing on positivity right now. Positive that everything will work out.

Today wasn’t so patriotic. Everything stressing me out about losing control of my body is taking its toll. My mom did buy us notorious RBG shirts, and so I wore mine today. Still wearing it. Funny how a piece of cotton can give you strength. At work I had a coworker who said that me and other women at work were over-reacting. My coworkers know that I am LDS and that I practice and go to work, but yet I am gay and I am pro-choice. I don’t like talking about religion, especially at work. I usually let that stuff go. Then my cousin (E) and his boyfriend (S) came over to watch Rocky Horror Picture Show. Before we watched it, S and I were talking about church videos we grew up with, and I mean the cheesy VHS tapes. E didn’t grow up in the church and later converted so he had never seen the cheese. S mentioned that he loved Saturday Warrior. My Turn on Earth has not aged well. Oof. Found it on youtube and it was so hard to not have the cringe face. I remembered one of the opening songs, I Have a Plan. Guy in the red cap takes the role of Lucifer (who has the much better verse than Jesus btw) and that’s when it hit me.

“I will force them to live righteously”.

I played the My Turn on Earth vhs tape so hard when I was a kid, it’s a miracle it still works (yes, I still have it). I was taught in my household that it is a divine right to make choices. God doesn’t force people to make certain choices. Jesus didn’t walk around forcing people. We have the ability to choose. In my head, forcing choices on people is sinful. It’s Satanic if you want to think about it in the terms of that line from a corny musical written by Carol Pearson and my man Lex de Azevedo. I could go on a tangent how that man sculpted my entire LDS childhood but that is a different story for another day.

Moral of the story tonight is choices are good.

I had written a much better blog post in my head while in the shower. Gonna try to get back in the swing of the things so that I can post here for me. If I am going to keep avoiding trying to date since I have no self confidence, least I can do is work on myself. Lol. Do the kids say that anymore? I got old fast.

Thurs 21 Jan ‘21

Welp. Today was a busy week, huh?

Let’s start with Zayn’s INZAYNLY AWESOME idea of writing a comic book based on his own album - take THAT reviews that said he had no concept behind it! The first panel of the story is a man in a white car speeding away from a man with purple eyes and white pupils (REALLY creepy btw), and it reads, “A madman has been chasing me for the past hour. When I go faster, he comes closer”. I am intrigued! I hope that this is some sort of enemies to lovers type thing, but knowing these guys, its strictly horror/suspense. This is being presented in video form, so the panels are moving figures and they are scored with songs from the album, which I assume is how the rest of the panels will also be presented. You can watch these two panels with the songs “Calamity” and “Better” over on YouTube for the full effect! Also, Zayn’s last listening party was today and he was the DJ! “DJ Malik”, he said in a sentimental throwback to his boyband days. He and his team had a great time throwing airhorns into the the listening party and then they did a “from Dusk Til Dawn '' encore, which I’m sure means Zayn wants us to be streaming NIL from Dusk Til Dawn!

To keep the party going, Paul Roberts, TPWK and longtime 1D choreographer, had a chat with the BBC about working with Harry and Phoebe (WB) on the music video. He knew right away, he said, that everyone from 1D could be a great dancer if they really wanted to be, and, ten years later, he finally got the chance to test the theory! Spoiler alert: he was RIGHT! Harry had seen Phoebe in Fleabag on the West End and got on with her from the word go, and so the idea came about. “It was about three weeks before the world started to burn”, he says about the filming of the video,“We didn’t know how lucky we were”.

Finally, let’s CHAT: it’s stunt timeeeeee!! Today is, of course, Freddie’s birthday, which meant the usual round of pictures stolen from social media from the Tomlinson sisters, silence from Louis, and birthday pics from the Clarks. Including a picture of a sonogram posted by Briana that was taken on August 3rd, 2015 (Louis confirmed the baby on the very next day on GMA). This sonogram is notable BECAUSE - drumroll pleasseeeee - it was taken at a FERTILITY CLINIC which specialized in surrogacy and IVF. So this is a clinic that only treats people who cannot have children naturally. To make matters more interesting, the clinic does not do non-client visits, and they did not do them in 2015. You simply could not go to this clinic if you had an accidental pregnancy because those are not the kinds of clients served by this clinic! I mean, if nothing else, this shows that Briana did not get accidentally pregnant by Louis, if she was pregnant at all. Likely, it was another fucked up photoshop job, where they switched Tammi’s name for hers and just forgot to change the name of the clinic. Sighhh. We knew this, of course, but WOW does this prove it concretely, huh? Anyways, I cannot BELIEVE that they are still fucking up THIS BADLY five years later, but uh. Yeah. Happy Birthday, Freddie, hope you got more than an apple this year!

But that’s not the ONLY stunt that’s becoming faker and faker: Fauxlivia is proving itself to be nothing but the cash, and the cars, and the glory...and the pretty clothes, apparently! Turns out, Olivia is a brand ambassador for La Ligne in much the same way that H works for Gucci. She’s been featured on their instagram many MANY times, and has, thus far, worn their clothes for no fewer than TWO of the Holivia pap walks. Strangely enough, though, when this whole stunt began to manifest in late October, HARRY began featuring on their Instagram page as well. Totally Organically, of course, considering that they’d never talked about him before! That AND: the pink beanie that H was wearing in their dumb af Parking Lot Pap Walk has ALSO been idenfied to be La Ligne, which I’m sure he Just Decided to begin wearing and it had NOTHING to do with Jeff being Right There and them having promoted Gucci together at Jeff’s wedding. Mhmmmmm they’ve convinced me they’re TOTALLY in love. Celebrities that promo together, stay together, after all! (Oh, is that not the saying?)

Meanwhile, Liam’s Final Act merch has been delayed, and he has asked people to “contact him when they get it” (Harry’s team could NEVER), and JC Stewart called Niall “one of the nicest guys in music”. I’m sure he agrees! And, Niall has his own little discourse today - so much for him not creating any drama, huh? There were some shirtless pics of him posted by an ~source~ where he seems to have been working out (Niall has ABS now??) and is arranging a stack of boxes that read “nude” (just like Niall, huh?). UAs battled it out whether or not these pics should have been posted because he did not know they were being taken and there’s ETHICS involved, but Niall hangs out shirtless so much ANYWAYS that I bet he doesn’t mind.

NOTHING RHYMES WITH CIRCUS TOUR (full show)

Since we don't have an official recording of the whole show, I edited together the fan footage that was available on youtube to come as close to replicating the whole thing as possible (full credits are in the description).

It was SO COOL to finally get a solid sense of what this tour was like! I know we’ve all seen these clips, but knowing where they fit into the full context of the show made everything 100x more fun.

I originally just made this for myself, but thought I’d share just in case anyone else was interested. more info:

please don't go into this expecting the professional quality of Live in Denver or Live in Chicago... it’s more like a combined fan experience?

I went through over 600 videos and ended up using 312

reviews said this show barely lasted an hour. my edit came to around 56 minutes & I cut at least 3 minutes from the intermission stuff so it’s close

one night Brendon tried to give Jon the “passionate kiss” and other nights he just stayed in the middle of the stage and was all dramatic on his own. I used the Ryan nights...

sometimes Brendon did the first guitar duel in Killer Queen with Jon instead of Ryan, but I used the Ryan parts again (so poor Jon played a bigger part than my edit makes it seem).

all of the audio & video I used are from this tour. I was tempted to sub in other audio at times, but I wanted it to be authentic.

I really did use the best footage I could find for each moment. most videos looked like they were filmed on potatoes by banshees during an earthquake (which is completely understandable btw). I’m so impressed & grateful for any footage people could film and were willing to share!!!!!

the quality will vary drastically – there were certain moments that fans were more likely to record & upload, so I had way less footage to work with for some parts. and every song had gaps where it was a huge challenge just to keep any decent video playing... so if it gets rough, just hang in there and know I tried to cut away to something better as soon as I could!

this was assembled from all of the shows throughout the tour so their makeup will change back and forth whoops

I also tried really hard to make sure Brendon didn’t teleport across the stage between shots buuuut it happened. (I guess I now have a solid sense of every move he made each night and ughh that guy did not make continuity easy ha)

there are two short moments where brendon and jon are absolutely not playing the part of the song you’re hearing... please pretend it works.

a lot of edits were done out of necessity (like the camera suddenly flipped upside down in the next frame) so, again, this is more like a record of a shared fan experience than some smooth intentional edit.

heads up for anyone with a mental illness – the dancers do some stuff that could potentially be offensive or triggering. idk how I feel about the Nails For Breakfast routine now that I’ve seen it in its entirety tbh. my main goal was just to present the show as accurately as possible.

idk whyyyy I waited until 13 years after this tour to start grabbing videos, but I did the best I could with what I found.

most fans focused their videos on Ryan & Brendon, so there aren’t as many shots of Jon. Spencer was just too far away to begin with. but they’re still wonderful.

ok hopefully that sufficiently lowers your expectations... but there are some really really great moments and it’s worth watching if you love P!ATD and are desperately curious enough about this show to endure the low quality!

Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Thanks to the awesome people who donated to Extra Life (you still can, btw!) y'all will now be treated to a retrospective on the 1993 classic movie, Super Mario Bros. When I took on this milestone, the first (and only) person I messaged for ideas on terrible (but wonderful) films based on video games was my friend Max, who has a history of viewing and talking about bad movies. He suggested this, and while I was aware of this magnificent piece of cinema history, I had not had the pleasure of viewing it myself. He hooked me up with a copy, and to say this film lived up to my expectations would be an understatement.

I couldn’t help but be charmed by this movie. It is filled with so many questionable creative choices that were fucking ridiculous. Mario and Luigi not being blood related? Sure. Cheesy Italian accents replaced with a New York ones? Yeah, why not? Having all the enemies in Super Mario Bros. be canonically dinosaurs? I mean... It's a choice informed by the great media dino wave of 1993, but whatever. Yoshi is a dinosaur, if we want to extend that to goombas and Koopa for whatever reason, I'm down. Having these dinosaurs live underneath New York City in a parallel dimension? It's based on a video game, why the fuck not? Everything is so goddamn bonkers.

The opening credits roll, and we’re told that 65 million years ago, a meteor created said underground parallel universe dinosaur land. We witness a human-looking woman, who is really a dinosaur, leaving an egg baby on a church doorstep. Don’t think about it too hard, the logistics of a human giving birth to an egg that size are just... it’s gross to think about.

We’re then introduced to the titular characters, Mario Mario and Luigi Mario. Yes, their last names are Mario. Making them the Mario brothers. Because this movie is interested in answering the important questions. Mario is the owner of a failing plumbing business, while Luigi is a conspiracy theorist who would have really enjoyed modern-day YouTube.

While they’re out trying to find work, they run into Miss Amy March herself, Daisy, who is an archeologist in charge of digging up dinosaur bones from a New York City construction site. She’s being forced off the property by the mob, who apparently are annoyed that a blonde lady in cargo shorts is coming between them and whatever the fuck they’re building.

They try and intimidate her, she storms off to use a payphone to call for security, and is almost picked up by two inconspicuous bozos in a cab who apparently are stealing Brooklyn women off the street for no reason. Their plan is quickly thwarted by a random moving pane of glass.

Instead, Daisy runs right into Luigi, who forgets how to human once he sees her pretty face. He asks her on a date, where she reveals even more exposition. She believes the meteor that destroyed the dinosaurs landed in New York City. Oh, and also, she’s the abandoned egg baby. Luigi is also an orphan, and this shared trauma apparently gets them both hot and bothered. They wander off to the dig site, because an underground pit attached to a sewer is so romantic, and it is also where Daisy feels the most comfortable.

What if we made out at the bone pit?

Their touching moment is cut short when the mob sabotages the plumbing in the sewer and water starts flooding the area. They run to get Mario, because he is a plumber, to fix the pipes, which is so fucking clutch, I love it so much.

While the Mario brothers are distracted, Daisy is captured by the weirdo twins and dragged into the alternate dinosaur universe. Mario and Luigi follow, and we’re treated to the most fucking amazing transition scene of Bob Hoskins spinning wildly through colorful rocks.

Turns out, parallel dinosaur world, or Dinohattan, is fucking lit as hell. I am convinced that Futurama based their sewer city on this movie.

King Koopa, who is a dinosaur with badly bleached hair gelled back in an effort to look like Michael Douglas in Wall Street, has taken over Dinohattan. He is the one who asked the goons to kidnap Daisy, because of the tacky crystal necklace she wears. Apparently, it is a piece of the meteorite that crashed into earth, and once he puts the piece back into the original space rock, the dinosaur world will merge with the mammal world after 65 million years of his people being sequestered underground, and Koopa will have endless resources at his disposal. Also, Daisy is a princess, and her dad is a giant fungus taking over the city, so that’s totally normal and not at all weird.

Problem is, the two idiots he sent to grab her didn’t think to check if she was wearing the necklace. Turns out, Luigi has the necklace, or had the necklace, as they are quickly mugged by a granny, who is then robbed by a lady with a bright red spiky latex coat and springy robot feet. The brothers are then arrested by the dinocops and are grilled by Koopa for the whereabouts of the rock. When they play dumb he uh... reacts in a proportionate way.

I am not even going to attempt to explain the devo process... It is a combination of insane and fucking disgusting. Whoever in the costuming department looked at the cute fucking mushroom Goombas in the video game and decided to translate them into this scaly, jagged-teethed nightmare fuel deserves to be committed.

Also, there’s only one lizard king, and that’s Jim Morrison, so back off, buddy.

What is hilarious to me is this is the story the screenwriters came up with. Super Mario, as a video game, doesn’t have much lore, right? You slide down pipes, you jump on mushrooms, and you save the princess from a spiky turtle. They took that game and created... This. A parallel underground dinosaur universe that has a sentient fungus as a king, taken over by a human-like t-rex that devolves other lizards into tiny-headed night paralysis demons.

The middle of this movie alternates between a slog of expositional scenes about Daisy being a princess, and pretty entertaining action scenes of the Mario brothers running from Goombas while trying to find and save Daisy. Mario and Luigi steal a cop car and drive it off a cliff Thelma and Louise-style; They cosplay as Ketchup and Mustard to steal the necklace back from Big Burtha while asking her to stomp on them; They jump off a bridge into a garbage truck; They break the pipes in Koopa’s building to freeze everything, and get past an elevator full of Goombas by making them dance.

Watching Daisy damsel-in-distress-it in Koopa’s high rise office building and fend off advances by a long-tongued dude who devolved her father into a mushroom was pretty boring and disturbing. Alternatively, witnessing Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo pretend to jump on giant sheets of fungus really sold this movie for me. It succeeds when it tries to be ridiculous and fun, and fall flat when it attempts to integrate any sort of drama that I’m assuming was added to make this story more appealing to adults.

Mario and Luigi eventually find Daisy, and she introduces them to her father - a giant dripping blob suspended from the ceiling. Luigi wants in her pants badly enough that he pretends this is a reasonable thing to do. Mario heads further into the building to free the other ladies kidnapped by tweedle dee and tweedle dum that they initially thought were Daisy, but weren’t. The newly assembled group are able to escape by sliding down the frozen pipes on a mattress before they are green-screen launched out of the pipe and back into the greater Dinohattan area.

The amount of times Mario and Luigi use their plumbing skills to overcome obstacles may be my favorite part of this movie. The plot goes out of its way to justify a really bizarre character trait for the original game.

Anyway, the end of this movie comes at you fast. First, the sentient fungus king gives Mario and Luigi a bomb, and they decide to wind it up and aim it at Koopa. This takes about 10 minutes of screen time to matter again.

Koopa’s second-in-command tries to merge Daisy’s stolen necklace with the meteor, and instead gets skeletoned to bits, prompting the best line delivery reaction from Daisy, a deadpan “Yikes”.

Because the necklace has now been returned to its resting place, the worlds start to merge Infinity War style.

“Mr. Koopa, I don’t feel so good.”

Koopa and Mario end up back in Manhattan, and Koopa just starts shooting his devo guns at human mobsters, turning them back into primates, and giving their wardrobe a whole new literal definition of monkey suit.

Luigi uses his super plumbing powers to drill the necklace back out of the meteor, separating the worlds again. The bomb finally goes off, they devo Koopa into slime, and the citizens celebrate by immediately painting over his ever-prevalent propaganda.

The king evolves back into a mushroom person or something, and Daisy stays in Dinohattan to get to know her father better. Mario and Luigi return to their lives in Brooklyn as plumbers, and their heroic acts make them conspiracy community famous, as they now refer to our heroes as the Super Mario Brothers. Roll Credits.

Except not, because Daisy returns to ask for the help of a couple of great plumbers, setting up a sequel that will never, ever happen because there is no god and we’re not allowed to feel joy.

Honestly, Super Mario Bros. is great. It owned every bold plot and visual choice it made, and I have to respect it. I could listen to John Leguizamo say Mario like 700 more times. Y’all are missing out if you think you’re too cool to watch this movie.

I’ll be back to musical reviews later this month. I have a few seasonally appropriate movies in my big red sack waiting to be placed under the tree... Yes, I meant to phrase it that way.

Better Half

(A/N: i seriously missed writing connor blurbs more than i can even explain!! oh and this is told from connor’s pov btw! anyways i hope you enjoy this lol)

Summary: You tried cooking Connor breakfast like he always does for you, even though you don’t cook whatsoever. Well it ends up turning into a big mess but he saves the day. I mean, you are each other’s better halves.

A groan left my throat as I waved my arm around the sheets, searching for something that apparently wasn't there.

I lifted my head up and cracked one eye open in the bright morning sun to see that she wasn't anywhere to be found.

My eyes found the bathroom that was open and empty as well. I pulled myself to the edge of the bed to see if she fell off while she was sleeping again and grunted when she wasn't there.

"Y/n?" I whispered.

No response. I fell back onto the bed and rubbed my eyes, blinking slowly as to adjust to the day before finally getting up. I looked down at my bare chest and sweatpants and decided that putting on a shirt wasn't worth the effort right now, got up and walked to the door of our room.

Once I opened the door and walked out a few feet, I heard some noises coming from our kitchen downstairs.

Maybe she's getting some cereal? I heard a few clanking sounds of pots or pans. Maybe it's a hungry burglar?

I listened a little closer as I walked down the stairs and could hear some angry mumbling that I definitely recognized as my Y/n's. Is she actually cooking for me? She never cooks.

My heart melted at the thought and I quickly, but quietly, made my way down the rest of the stairs so I could watch around the corner.

"Okay, now that its all mixed together I need to spray the pan and then I can cook it. Right?" She asked herself, looking at her phone that she had propped up against a stack of cooking books.

I laughed quietly to myself as I pictured her trying to use a cooking book before giving up and finding a video on YouTube.

"Okay so now I poor in the egg stuff," she trailed off as she carried a large mixing bowl to the stove.

I held my breath for a moment seeing as she had the flame as high as it would go and she was already struggling with the nearly full bowl of omelette mixings.

Please don't spill them. Please don't spill them. Please don't spill them.

I jumped down from the stairs when she lost grip of the bowl and all of the contents spilled over the counter, most luckily avoiding the stove.

Y/n quickly grabbed a dish towel from in front of the stove to try to clean up the mess that was continuing to spill onto the stove and screamed when the rag caught on fire.

"Baby, watch out," I spoke quickly taking the rag from her hand and tossing it into the sink that had been full of dishwater before turning off the stove.

I grabbed some paper towels and made a barrier between the stove and countertop to stop the mess from spreading too much before turning to look at Y/n.

I tried to look stern but I forgot almost immediately when I saw her standing there, tears in her eyes, and her left hand gripping her right wrist.

"I'm so sorry, Con. I just wanted to make you breakfast like you do for me and then I nearly caught the whole house on fucking fire and-"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, hey, stop." I stepped in front of her and put both of my hands on her cheeks, making her look at me.

"Don't beat yourself up, I think that you are an amazing cook and do you want to know why?" She didn't answer, just blinked and sniffled a little. "Because you keep trying," I pushed a strand of hair back from her face, tucking it behind her ear. "And about the whole setting the house on fire," I pulled her in towards me in a hug, tucking her head beneath my chin.

"Nothing bad will ever happen as long as you let me be there to help you. Just like how I need you there to help me so that I don't do something dumb like build a skate ramp in our backyard and some other stupid shit that i blame Brian for making me want to do." I felt her let out a small laugh, her breath warming my still bare chest.

I kissed the top of her head before leaning back and sliding my hands down her arms to take a hold of her hands. I quickly let go when she let out a hiss at me touching her wrists.

"What? What's wrong? What did I do?" I could hear the panic in my own voice but I was too nervous that I had hurt her to care.

"No, no. It wasn't you," she sighed, lifting her right arm to show me the red burn that covered her hand around her thumb. It wasn't too horrible a burn but it was definitely going to blister.

"I think it happened when the rag caught on fire." Her cheeks were bright red, thin shiny tracks running down them from some of her tears spilling over from her eyes.

"Come here," I whispered, pulling her towards the kitchen island that hadn't been spilled on and I lifted her to sit on the counter. I went to our bathroom to grab our first aide kit and stood in between her legs.

After a few minutes of her giving me instructions on dressing her wound, she was all wrapped up and nearly done sniffling. I looked up from her wrist, into her eyes.

"You okay?" I asked.

"Mhmm," she hummed in response, leaning back. "I'm just sad. I wanted so bad to make you a breakfast and I couldn't even do a simple omelette without starting a fire. What fiancé can't even do a simple omelette?"

"I mean, one day we might have kids and they're going to need food and all I can do is cereal! I'm going to be a useless mother and wife. God I'm already a useless fiancé." Tears were streaming down her face at this point and my heart felt like it could break.

"Don't say that." My voice came out deep and gruff, anger very clear in my tone. Her eyes widened in surprise before I continued.

"I will not allow a single person on this planet, including you, talk about the love of my life like that. You have so many great qualities that make you a fantastic fiancé and will make you an even more fantastic wife and mother."

She laughed, still not even remotely close to understanding how wonderful she is in my eyes.

"You are so patient and creative. Our kids won't have a second of boredom if you have anything to do about it. You are so caring and will be the best nurse whenever the fall and scrape their hand or knees. No matter what our kids go through you'll find a way to make them feel better. Do you even remember how we met?" A wobbly smile overtook her lips.

"You were riding your bike by my friend's and you crashed into a fence across the street from her house." she laughed at the memory.

"And then what happened?" I urged her on.

"And then I invited you to my house next door to her’s, helped you get all bandaged up." she rolled her eyes, her smile actually real now.

"That's right," I smiled, leaning in to give her a kiss. I sighed as her lips touched mine, that has always given me “butterflies” as she calls it, that I didn't know was possible before I met her.

"Thanks for breakfast by the way," I spoke.

"What are you talking about? I didn't even make anything edible! Plus, the whole kitchen is a mess!" Y/n laughed, letting me know that she wasn't upset anymore, just slightly annoyed with how things had turned out.

"Ah, but baby, it’s the thought that counts, is it not?" She laughed again and I quickly turned around to the fridge, pulling out a box of toaster strudels and handed them to her.

"I'll clean up if you cook?" I asked as she smiled.

"Deal," she said, hopping off the counter. We worked quickly, and soon Y/n and I had wiped off the counter and stove top and tossed everything else in the sink by the time that our breakfast was popping out of the toaster. We sat down at the island, our fingers interlocked as we took our first bites.

"Con," she said softly, making me turn to her. "Thank you for being my better half."

"And thank you for being mine." I kissed her temple and we finished our toaster strudels in comfortable silence.

This girl truly was my bestfriend. She has been ever since we were 13 and I crashed my bike into that fence and she doctored me up. She was and always will be the better half of me.

Thank You Critical Role - My D&D story

“The adventure begins, they were always beside you. Your nerdy best friends and the DM to guide you”. Critical role, what more can I say?

I started playing dungeons and dragons when I was around 4\5th grade, playing with a group as an afternoon group\class. 4E, and I don't remember much besides my halfling ranger and a lot of glances and readthrough of my still existing Player's Handbook. (Well the first half of the book, the miniatures section didn’t really speak to me) Finding out my father was a DM when he was younger, and I even went to some events. I can't at all recall why I stopped, but the happiness and creativity wonder I felt still lingered in my mind.

I had the love for fantasy, I had things like LOTR, “hey! it’s just like D&D”, and a lot of creativity and storytelling crafting.

After that, I kinda moved on I guess, felt lonely, and like geekness and role-playing was a bad and childish thing (though it made me feel so spectacular). The closest I got was some lively Avatar OC with some new friends.

Fast forward to 2015, The episode “Dungeons, Dungeons & More Dungeons” from gravity falls. All those feelings rose again and I remembered how much I loved playing.

(also enjoy role-playing and with LARP being mentioned there too, when I went to some Cons I had a blast with the foam swords there).

I took out the 4e Player's Handbook, made with my brother (who got in and out of d&d by that time) a carved foam platform and a cubes map - thus started a made-up game by the name of "D&F" (Dungeons & Fandoms), using his found old dices and it's a 1 on 1 encounter magic arena with no distinct roles. What started as "let's make Ability Scores to characters from shows" became a random "I cast a tree of pancakes on you! -no, I burned it with fire-bending you’re dead". A game that also slowly died as we grew up and apart (“I mean, they used to be best friends, but then they got all stupid. Can you promise me you won't get stupid?”)

(FOUND IT!!!) A mild discovery of the ingenious song “Never Split The Party”, an actual d&d song I discovered after watching Semblance of Sanity and figuring out that their ditty “don’t you know you never split the party” is an actual song their singing.

Then another tiny spark 3 years later when the Voltron episode “Monsters & Mana” came out (BTW, a great d&d parody episode). Which mostly came to an end after a glance in the book and dices and helping a friend with ideas to craft his own RPG game.

We arrive at the date when everything changed (well, almost), December 7th, 2018. The day I discovered the “Mighty Nein Animated Intro - Your Turn To Roll” and my life were never the same.

Stumbled upon it by complete accident. I was at a loss for words, I heard the name “Critical Role” thrown about many times on tumbler’s trending list and saw pictures and art of mostly Jester. I didn't even know what is it - a tv show? a game? well, it looks like D&D. The song was incredible and brought me back, I started writing a full-fleshed out character - a human ranger taught by an elf, but the idea was quickly shifted to another fantasy story by me (it’s heard sticking to it when you know it’s just backstory and character info and you will not play and you have no one). But I continue watching this video on repeat (haha not even knowing what it actually is), scouting tumbler for info and watching some random animatics, learning it's probably a podcast d&d\rpg or something. It could have been amazing as a tv show (XD)… and then another video got released, same incredible essence of d&d song but different animation, and different characters That was my first introduction to Vox Machina.

I had to check this out. Tried to get into the fandom but got lost, even though the interest was there. Stepping upon the awesome cosplay OP and even found out about a hamilton album parody - and my musical loving self was ecstatic.

Found the full podcast list of champion 1 and started this May. But it was hard following just by voice, and I wanted to see what was happening, every episode was 3-4 hours long, with me in my military base it was impossible. (also I thought to myself “it looks cool, but what so investing and amazing about watching some people play D&D - boy I was wrong).

Then my unexpected savior arrived, miss Corona the pandemic.

I suddenly had a lot of time on my hands and the Critical Role vids got suggested again on YouTube, yes indeed, I discovered there are actually filmed episodes. Towards the end of May, I started the journey and the flame reignited. I started talking to a good friend of mine about his interest in d&d and we started crafting characters - I resurrected my charter into a half-elven ranger with a full backstory. Down the road, I asked another two friends of mine about their interest in d&d (because maybe I can join together an actual party), one of them said, and I’m quoting “no I don’t have experience playing…but I swear I wanted to talk to you about D&D”. Unfortunately, the two friends groups didn’t mix but we made an improved first session with me as the fucking DM, simply magical. Later that week I started a 1on1 campaign with the other friend, with him as the DM and a marvelous start of an adventure (and helping him learn the rules as an ADM, with the past faded expirations I had).

All while fangirly, hyperfixation way continuing with the journey of Vox Machina, it’s amazing because as opposed to other shows I can also completely see the fandom growing along with the show and cast (i just hope I can catch up to the Mighty Nein before the inevitable 3rd campaign, 198 episodes to go - happy 100th ep!). It’s also difficult to get into the Critters fandom right now because most of the community is focused and recognized by Mighty Nein. Also burning up creativity slots and making more various characters then I could ever use - I’m enjoying myself so muchhh. Diving headfirst into this beautiful crazy of the mess that is D&D.

Nothing’s never too late and it’s ok if you have hiatus. It doesn’t make you any less worthy and I don’t need to feel bad about this journey of that a bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors sit around and play Dungeons & Dragons got me back to loving, playing and caring about the world of d&d, it’s part of the intent. As a fantasy lover (spells, costumes, items, structures, creatures, you name it), aspiring creative writer and an untalented lover of acting theatrical and role-playing, along with the incredible mechanism of RPG and the vast community, the amazing time with friends, its the game for me, it always had been. So thank you Critical Role for igniting that flame once again - even if I will lose it again I will always have you guys. “Can you answer the call? Dig in deep in your soul. As the legend unfolds, now it's your turn to roll!”

My top 10 favorite openings

Yeah I know nobody asked for it, but welcome to discover new music and hopefully new animes/mangas if they catch your eye. I won't include openings of romcoms or a few slice of life stories since I should make a different list for them. I'll add the name of the band if I find it. There's a couple of songs here from animes I didn't watch. If you think there's another amazing opening that should be listened to, share!

MOB PSYCHO 100 I [99 - Mob Choir]

I always thought this was some uninteresting anime, and well I was totally wrong. The animation is AWESOME, the story is really cool and explores some interesting perspectives about life that other shonen (or seinen?) ignore. It has a different style, it's kinda plain at times (and this might be good because it avoids unnecessary complexity) but in my opinion, much better than some popular animes of the moment. I feel it's very original, and stays as part of my top 10 manga/animes too.

FULL METAL ALCHEMIST BROTHERHOOD [Again - YUI]

This might be my favorite song. If I ever fall in a coma, try to wake me up with it, I'm sure it will work. I might be biased because this is the first anime I watched (when I didn't care about these kind of series) and I love it, and it's definitely my favorite (I was lucky to be gifted the first volume in japanese). The melody is calm and the lyrics are heart touching. FMA is a manga and anime you should add to your watch/read list without a doubt. Sharing short version of the song to find the channel of the artist.

BOKU NO HERO ACADEMIA [The day - Porno Grafitti]

I will never regret being on the bus playing this song on my phone (with headphones) being seen by people who would think something about the name of the band (like listening to anime openings almost every day wasn't already a weird thing). None of the other songs of BNHA surpassed the greatness of this song IMO.

About it, even though it gets criticism I think it's a good story, and I feel it can be incredibly creative at times - there's a reason why it's so popular after all. I should also remark that it pays attention to a lot of characters, secondary or villains have good development (something that I haven't seen in other shonen or they fail to do it, and remember BNHA has A LOT of characters).

This story is definitely going to be long, I think it's close to reach its first half, expect probably 70 volumes or so.

NARUTO [Kanashimi Wo Yasashisa Ni - Little by Little]

Wait? WHAT? Did you really pick this opening over Silhouette? I mean, no offense to Silhouette and the fantastic band KANA-BOON, but I've listened to it so many times (best memes lol), and I already didn't have it as my favorite. There are other openings that I love (Naruto Shippuden this time): 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, 14, 15 (Guren is the best one IMO), 16, 17, 20.

You didn't watch Naruto? Then what are you doing here? It's a must watch! It's a shonen with beautiful messages, inspiring characters, and this song probably embodies one positive vibe of the story - best part "the most important things are those without any shape".

PSYCHO PASS [Abnormalize - ling tosite sigure]

This anime is definitely in my favorite list, I feel it's the best seinen I've watched. Its manga is an adaptation, but the original story is the one that's animated. Some people say that season 2 and 3 aren't as good as the first and honestly it's hard to do something more brilliant than the incredible season 1, nonetheless you would miss the progress of the story and interesting characters if you only leave at the first one.

It reaches some philosophical thoughts that not all sci-fi can explore on the same way. Don't expect it to be an easy watch though - you better click pause to understand every dialogue.

SHINGEKI NO KYOJIN [Shinzou wo sasageyo - Linked Horizon]

Yeah, the first opening is AMAZING, but I might have a thing for 2nd openings. I must say that the synchronization of the scenes don't make justice for the melody of this song, though. Attack on Titan might reach the top 5 best shonen (is it shonen anyways?) anime/manga of all time.

I saw everyone talking about it and praising it, so I decided to watch the first episode and I couldn't get through it because of its disturbing art LMAO. My eye is accustomed to other kind of art, but I have to say I WAS TOTALLY WRONG. Good thing the second time I watched it I felt comfortable and discovered not only a mind-blowing story, but yeah, its animation is fantastic (take a peek at a few YT videos showing the process on the making of Levi's scenes). I only follow the manga to be updated, and I'm bad at recognizing characters, but you won't waste time or money by giving this one a chance.

THE PERFECT INSIDER [Talking - KANA BOON]

MOB PSYCHO 100 II [99.9 - Mob Choir]

Wasn't this anime already on the list? No, no it's not (?) I mean, HOW CAN'T I INCLUDE THIS ONE. Fantastic. I thought I wouldn't be able to fall in love with the new opening but after listening to it twice I couldn't get it off my mind. There's a reason, well deserved reason, why it got chosen for the Crunchyroll awards...

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION [Zankoku na Tenshi no Te-ze - Yoko Takahashi/Hidetoshi Sato]

Starts with an angelic voice to a disco-like rhythm, and it's without a doubt a fantastic song. This might be the most famous opening of anime. Pay attention or watch twice if you want to understand the story, though.

TOKYO GHOUL [Unravel - TK from ling tosite sigure]

If I'm in a coma and the song Again didn't work, then this one will wake me up FOR SURE. I love how it embodies the angst of the story, the tragedy, the bad luck of the protagonist. I recommend to read the manga instead of keeping too loyal to the anime - it's no surprise that SP messed up with the storytelling of another manga... Tmnt Makeup interest headcanons

Soo….I did some headcanons about Raph last year and it got so many great comments...by the way THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO REBLOGED AND COMMENTED I LOVED IT SO MUCH...heh...but anyway thanks to @midnightrebel669 she gave me the idea to do a headcanon on what type of makeup designs the guys like on girls...since I love makeup a lot ...I really hope yall like it!!!! (btw in this i don't give the reader a gender cause I know many boys and non binary people who love makeup and sexy turtles heh)

First off…

All of the boys think you are absolutely stunning without makeup...cause they can see your skin, your sparkling eyes, your puffy lips, and every small freckles or beauty mark decorated on your face (if you have any) ...no matter what you think is imperfect weather its a birthmark or redness they see it as what makes you unique! Also any makeup that enhances your natural beauty they go crazy for.

Any makeup that highlights your eyes! Blue glitter or even full blue smokey eye…. He loves to stare into your eyes already...loves to watch them sparkle with love and happiness. Leo would never admit it to his brothers but he's hurt that people wouldn't accept him as who he is..but you...you see him as one of the sexiest guys on earth…....He’s so happy that he gets to have a beautiful person like you…..

Honestly loves lipstick, lip gloss, or even lip art! Of course if there's red...He loves your lips any chance he gets his lips are latched onto yours…(Mikey called him a leech one time which ended up with both of them going to the hashi)...Your lips are so soft and kissable he sometimes cant handle himself. All you have to do is pucker your lips at him. Once you do that he's puddy in your hands. As Raph was growing up he didn't think that someone could love “a freak” like him. He would dream about kissing someone’s lips sometimes wake up to his lips on his pillow. But once he kissed you….he never stopped. Another reason he loves lipstick is cause he can walk around with a mark on him.

He loves the contours of your face...anything that compliments the hollows of your cheeks or your chin even..since he's so tall he would sometimes put his finger under your chin as he kisses you..he would be so intrigued at how makeup can transform a person’s face. Once he sees that you added something to appreciate the curvature of your face he won't stop staring at your face. He would probably start to watch YouTube videos to watch the process. Throughout aging Donnie always wanted to have a significant other. Someone to work on new gadgets with. He didn't think he was as good as his brothers...he was the tallest..not the most muscular..had glasses..also he was always called a nerd. The reason he really loved was the shape of a person's face the way how each was unique...all he wanted was someone as unique as him...and now that he has you all he can do is admire your one and only face.

Mikey loves your cheeks...he thinks they make you look so innocent and adorable so anything that will amplify them he will totally love! He would love when you wear blush, highlighter contour or even glitter. He loves to pinch your cheeks and kiss them sometimes even blow raspberries on them. No matter what he's doing he will drop it to kiss or touch your soft skin. When Mikey was a little tot he wanted his ‘true love’ someone who wouldn't see him as a monster and scream or run away. The moment he laid his eyes on you and you didn't scream and run he feel head over ...well...sneakers for you…..your his dream significant other and he couldn't ever ask for anyone better

I’m the anon that’s been watching Tucker Carlson since April 2020 & doesn’t know whether I should continue watching or not. Nice blog btw. I still don’t know whether I like him or not or should I like him or not. Tbh I watch CNN & MSNBC all day then I end up watching Tucker, Hannity, Ingraham Angle & the Five. I don’t know whether to like these people or not. I don’t know that about CNN & MSNBC either. I’m lost. I just started getting into politics when the coronavirus came. I don’t know. 😔

Oh thanks for the compliment and welcome to the world of politics, it sucks. Ok so I thought really hard about this question because I don’t want to just tell you “read all the media I like and become a mini me, all of your ideas should be mine” I think its important for people to be able to do research and make up their own mind. So rather than me telling you what media you should check out, I want to talk to you about how it is best to get your own news and what tips to bear in mind. So here is “EE guide to the news” but bear in mind most of these are suggestions not absolute rules. But i’m going to violate my own standards with rule number 1

1) DO NOT WATCH FOX. There is a whole range of different opinions on what is a good place to get your news, but almost all experts agree, if you want accurate news do not touch anything owned by Rubert Murdoch. The Right wing has its own little media bubble which makes it almost impossible to get accurate information, avoid all of that like the plague. Fox News (all of it), Brietbart, Daily Mail, New York Post, The Blaze, anything in the Conservative media bubble is going to be primarily misinformation and avoid it like the plague. Any time you see a news source or claim made by any of them, double check it with a source that isn’t literally propaganda. And Tucker Calrson is probably the worse of the lot. Literally not watching the news is better than watching Right Wing News.

2) Don’t have one news source. No news source is perfect and all of them have their own bias and lack of information. So its best not to pick a single news source to be your guide to knowledge, you want to have a few news sources that you bounce between. So if a single news article is like “this happened” you can check with other sources.

3) As a rule, avoid cable news. CNN, NBC, MSNBC and BBC are real life grow up news sources, but cable news has a lot of problems with presentation. They have to be extremely quick with their summaries and they often have less effective fact checkers. So your best guide is print media, CNN written articles tend to be a lot better than CNN’s video stuff.

4) Know what the news is for. A lot of news outlets do different things. So 538 is a great website for reporting on electoral politics, and Politico is great at getting at the view of Washington insiders. Your ideal media diet should draw from a variety of sources

5) There are also fact checking websites which if you ever see something get debated really heated in terms of what happened you can check those

So when it come what you should read, I think there two basic things to keep in mind

6) The political bias of the news. All news has a political bias and it is good to know what position people come from. Ideally you should get stuff that goes across a range of political world views that aren’t openly conservative because conservative news organizations just are misinformation personified.

7) Finally there is quality of reporting. No news site is perfect but some have better fact checkers, editors, resources and writers. So as a rule, if the New York Times reports something, especially a factual piece, its probably correct, you should double check but you are probably going to be fine with New York Times or Washington Post factual stuff. Opinions/editorals/Analysis is more nuance

So in terms of the most qualified Anglo-American news sources I would recommend the following

Politico (Far Left)

Foreign Affairs (Leftist Centrist)

BBC (Centrist)

Time Magazine (Moderate Left wing)

Vox (Far Left, better for opinion pieces)

Forbes (Business)

Fortune (Centrist)

Financial Times (Conservative Centrist)

PBS (Moderate Left)

Stuff which is still good quality but not as great but are real news

Christian Science Monitor (The weirdest newspaper on the planet)

CNN written articles (Centrist)

NBC Written (Centrist)

CBS (Centrist)

ABC (Centrist)

The New Republic (Radical left)

The Nation (Radical Left)

And stuff which tends to be shaky but you should always double check

Personally I think you should go in the moderate to radical left direction but go find your own stuff. Just avoid anything in the conservative media sphere because its not just stuff I disagree with, it is mostly misinformation. And super dooper avoid non journalist on Fox like Hannity or Carlson the latter who is basically a White Nationalist.

TLDR: no do not watch Tucker Carlson, avoid him entirely.

Why the cool kids (and brands who hope to be perceived as such) are on TikTok

Being what I like to describe as a “tail-end millennial,” I’ve grown up both with and in the digital age. I still remember turning in school assignments completed on a typewriter as well as playing Oregon Trail in computer class on those box-shaped, neon green Macintosh screens (I’m still heartbroken that my wife died of dysentery, btw). I remember pleading with my mom to hang up the phone so I could log onto AOL, and how much thought I’d put into curating the perfect AIM away message. I joined Facebook my senior year of college when it was still “the Facebook” and for college kids only, and remember how big a deal it was to rearrange my MySpace top eight (funny how we were full-on coding and didn’t even realize it). But now, as a mom of three tweens, I can admit that despite digital and social media being both my personal experience and my chosen career, there are media formats out there that I know nothing about, and that my kids’ knowledge far trumps my own. None of these formats feel more foreign to me, yet obviously influential and equally important to the next generation, than TikTok.

What is TikTok and (dancing humanoid dogs aside) who uses it? TikTok is, by and large, the newer, cooler and way more sophisticated version of Vine (RIP to a real one). On its own website, TikTok says its mission is to “inspire creativity and bring joy.” Produced and manufactured by Beijing-based video-sharing service ByteDance, TikTok reportedly boasts 800 million users worldwide, and as of 2019, has surpassed one billion installs (Yeh, 2019). It creates and curates an experience driven by its powerful algorithm, turning all of its users into a connected network of mini-influencers through the use of trending hashtags, leveraging of popular music, and push for engagement with other users through duets and viral dance challenges, making for a meaningful, organized, and dare I say it, super fun experience for users of the app (Herrman, 2019).

In exploring the app, what I found especially interesting was the way TikTok employs a vertical feed experience prompting the user to swipe up, which sets it apart from similar apps like Instagram Stories or Snapchat. This “endless scroll” approach seems, in my opinion, very conducive to creating an almost addictive experience which can lock you in for hours and hours. TikTok appears to cleverly take advantage of the way users normally engage with our vertical screens, filling up the entire real estate of our phones with engaging video content coupled with popular music that’s perhaps a little too easy to get sucked into.

Who is TikTok really for?

As not only a mom of tweens, but also having worked in communications within the education space in various capacities since 2016, TikTok’s popularity among young people comes as no surprise to me. TikTok is primarily used by youth between the ages of 16 and 24 (Brucker, 2020). It is used by about 69 percent of young people in the U.S., and these users spend at least 80 minutes per day on the app (Perez, 2020). This is the same group that, if you ask them, considers Facebook to be that “cringey” old people app that your grandpa thinks is cool, and Twitter to be that thing where journalists and politicians bicker with other journalists and politicians. It’s unsurprising to me that young people would be attracted to TikTok, a space that can feel exclusively like their own.

For me, it is that young people's exclusivity that keeps me away from TikTok. Despite being what many consider to be a subject-matter expert on social media, I am admittedly intimidated by an app I don’t completely understand or feel welcomed on. I feel more comfortable with the apps I’ve come of age with and whose functionality is more native to my own digital experience, most notably Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. I worry I may look like I’m “trying too hard” by exploring TikTok, or worse, that my presence there as a 38-year-old mom will render it an uncool place to be. My own kids reacted with horror when they noticed I had TikTok installed on my work phone, it didn’t matter that my job was to manage my then-employer’s institutional presence on social media. “Mom, please don’t make Wesleyan University a TikTok” they begged (too late guys, already secured the username for posterity). It was clear that they viewed TikTok as their safe space, and that my presence, as well as my employer’s presence despite it being an elite, well-known university, was not welcome.

Are any grownups or brands doing TikTok “right?” Interestingly, several marketers have managed to get past this “eww, adults and brands” factor to effectively market to TikTok’s growing audience through clever advertising and engagement campaigns. Capitalizing on the popularity of hashtag challenges on TikTok, Universal Pictures turned to TikTok as a way to promote their 2018 film, The House with a Clock in Its Walls, through a #FindYourMagic campaign which prompted users to film themselves doing their own magic tricks. Leveraging the power of influence, Universal got a group of popular TikTok influencers to post their own DIY magic videos, which naturally prompted others to do the same. As a result of the campaign, Universal received 1.3 million likes on the influencer videos, generated 19,000 pieces of user-generated content, and gained 11,000 new followers (Brucker, 2020). Whether it prompted people to actually go see the film, I’m not really sure.

(Source: TikTok for Business) In my work as a higher education social media manager, I often came across other universities (typically, with bigger teams and even bigger budgets) doing great work on TikTok. From a marketing perspective, it makes sense why a university would want to invest in building an exceptional presence on TikTok. Each year, so much of your energy and efforts are dedicated to marketing to prospective students and their families, convincing them that your school is the school to attend. Based on user demographics alone, TikTok offers a captive audience for the exact age range higher ed marketers are working so hard to reach. I’m proud to say that my undergraduate alma mater, the University of Florida, was one of the first to leverage TikTok and is considered one of the best in the game. With nearly 97,000 followers and more than 1 million likes, it’s clear they’ve figured out what resonates with their audience. Most of their TikTok videos feature the beloved school colors (anyone who went to UF will tell you we bleed orange and blue), Al the Alligator (we obviously weren’t terribly creative on the mascot name), fave spots on campus and the like.

Other major schools like Brigham Young University and Florida International University capitalize on TikTok’s penchant for dance trends and employ their mascots, Cosmo the Cougar and Roary the Panther respectively, to jump in on these trends.

Is TikTok here to stay?

As a perpetual student of digital and social media, I see TikTok as the wave of the future for digital and social communications and marketing. The question for me, however, is whether or not I’m going to ride that wave as a communications professional. While digital marketing is still somewhat new on TikTok, my constant fear is that the moment brands step in and try to inject themselves onto a platform, mimicking and profiting off of the way it is organically used, its core users become disinterested, abandon the platform, and look for the next big thing they can call their own. If I’m lucky, perhaps I’ll get the next big idea and launch that platform myself.

Funny but true story. As I was putting the finishing touches on this blog post, my 12-year-old daughter came up behind me chanting the following.

Her: Racism? Stop it. Bullying? Stop it. Homophobia? Stop it.

Me: Is that from a TikTok?

Her: Yeah.
