Congratulations on your author debut, I'm so excited for your book!! 😇💕
Would you consider talking about the whole process of becoming a book illustrator /children's book author?
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!! And I'd be happy to share the process!
It all started for me with my 3dTotal artbook. 3dTotal is a small publisher in the UK, and they mainly focus on collections of artists' work. They use Kickstarter to fund each book, and my agent (the amazing Seth Fishman at Gernert) discovered me through the Kickstarter for my artbook Windows to Worlds!
He asked if I had any interest in working on graphic novels or picture books, and I had already been thinking about picture books! He found me my first picture book project with Penguin Workshop, Mother of Sharks, written by the awesome Melissa Cristina Márquez, which came out last year!
While I was working on Mother of Sharks, I was also talking with him about developing The Bakery Dragon, based of course on this painting, which was (and is) one of my proudest artistic moments.
For a little background on the painting, I painted it right after a really challenging couple of months medically - I was dealing with medical complications from my chronic illness for about 6 months, and I wasn't able to finish a single painting the whole time, I was just too exhausted from hospital visits and being in pain. That painting was the first piece I was able to actually complete (both emotionally and literally) in about half a year. So it always held a really special place in my heart, and I really wanted to keep living in that little world. I think there's something in it that is very special to me, about being outside in the cold, seeing warmth and love through a glass barrier, and wanting desperately to reach it.
With Seth's guidance, over a couple months, I developed a pitch for it. The script developed slowly alongside the designs for characters, locations, etc.
Tumblr media
(Early version of Ember above! He has changed a bit!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought I had already read a lot of picture books, I've always loved them, but I read hundreds and hundreds during this process. There is something uniquely fun and challenging about telling a complete narrative in 48 pages (which is already a long picture book, many are 32!) My book also pulls some elements from comics, such as speech bubbles, which I found to be incredible assets for humor and character development.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My pitch included designs, some early example spreads, and a rough script with story beats and jokes! My agent took it out into the world, and the publisher we ended up going forward with was Knopf, an imprint of Penguin Random House! I absolutely love the Knopf team and the beautiful books they put out! My editor, Katherine Harrison, really understood what I wanted to accomplish and has been so incredibly helpful in her guidance!
And from there... through rewrites, dialog adjustments, and lots and lots of drawings, it became a book! I'm happy to answer questions about the process! I'll leave you guys with a little preview from the interior of the book! (And of course you can pre-order it here, gotta learn the author skill of always including that link haha!)

This is the first modernist home built in the UK and it is classy. The 1920s home in Amersham, UK has 6bds and offers over £3M/$3.809M are being accepted.
Tumblr media
Beautiful entrance hall. The home also has elements of Art Deco. It looks like the frosted glass doors slide shut to make walls. I love the art deco lights above the doorways.
Tumblr media
If you don't like the tree in the middle, use the fountain. You'll see that the ceiling goes up into the 2nd fl.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The home just gives off sleek, classy vibes. In this sitting room, the hearth is metal. I've never seen that before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The library/den/music room has rich wood cabinetry and I like the way the the fireplace looks. It also has a metal hearth and mirrored columns.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dining room is definitely art deco and has gold leaf-look walls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kitchen is ultra modern. It looks like they painted the kitchen bright white and it drowns the color in the photos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In these older photos, you can see the color better- the cabinets are light blue and the appliances are chef's quality.
Tumblr media
The home contains several reception rooms. This one is large and bright. It appears to have an art area in the corner. It would make an amazing art studio.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the 2nd floor, this is the opening you see in the entrance hall. Isn't this a unique architectural feature in a room? I would think that it would be out in the hall.
Tumblr media
There's a bedroom wing. This may or may not be the primary bedroom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is an empty bedroom suite with bath. Great built-ins.
Tumblr media
This smaller bedroom is a guest room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at the bas relief wall art behind the tub.
Tumblr media
And, here's another large reception room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Terraces and patios around the exterior of the home.
Tumblr media
Very large terraces on the home.
Tumblr media
Stairs down to a pond water feature. The grounds are park-like.

May Prompts (27) Jealousy
Tumblr media
The Luckiest Girl in the World (chapter27)
Summary: Rosie and Timothy travel the Greek islands. An intriguing experience on Santorini, puzzles and irks Rosie immensely. When Timothy doesn't react to her liking, there's only one option on how to move forward.
Twenty-Seven Years Old
To celebrate my birthday and my new fulltime job as a political risk analyst, Timothy and I went island-hopping in Greece. Liwia and her girlfriend had done it last year, and it appealed to us both. Having nothing but the flights planned, made me feel a bit reckless but it was quite freeing as well.
The only thing we’d decided on was to stick to the Cyclades and we started our journey by taking a ferry to the small island Antiparos. Several people who let out rooms stood waiting on the quay as we disembarked. An elderly and friendly looking man caught our attention, and the room he had to offer was more than sufficient.
Our first breakfast is one I’ll remember forever. The small restaurant was situated by the seafront where the fishing boats came in with their catch. Faded coloured fishing nets hung to dry in the sun, the scent of salt weaving its way to our nostrils.
Freshly pressed orange juice and the fluffiest omelette I’d ever come across, ensured the perfect start of our day.
We hired a moped to explore a little. The trip took us through a landscape of olive trees and flowers we didn’t have in the UK. Our destination was the famous cave with stalagmites and stalactites. The stalagmite at the entrance is apparently 45 million years old, the oldest in Europe.
We were warm and a bit sweaty after standing out in the sun, while we waited for our guide. The air inside was pleasantly chill and got even colder as we descended the 411 steps to the heart of the cave. It was a mesmerising sight, and knowing that this was the nature’s own doing, left me amazed and humble.
At a cosy taverna we ate the best Greek salad to date. The ripe tomatoes paired with the salty feta cheese, olives, onions, the rich olive oil and the homemade bread, almost made me religious for a moment.
The beach close to our quarters, was small, secluded and blessedly free of crowds. We had taken a boat to a famous beach the day before, but we’d barely found a free space to lay down our blankets, so this felt like paradise in comparison.
Another short boat ride away was the bigger island Paros. We took the bus to the other side of the island. I don’t remember anything else from that trip than the hours we spent in Naoussa. Several boats painted in bright colours lay bobbing in the water close to the restaurants that encircled the bay. It may sound simple, but it was the most beautiful view, and I couldn’t take my eyes off it. We sat there for hours, eating seafood and drinking Greek white wine.
***
So far, it had been a “normal” vacation, or tedious as Papa would’ve called it. That all ended when we sat foot on Santorini. Getting a room was easy enough, and relieved of our heavy rucksacks we went for a stroll in the main street of Fira. Every other shop was a jewellery shop, and the necklaces displayed bore the resemblance to what pharaohs and Cleopatra wore. Heavy, massive and ridiculously expensive. For each shop they seemed to grow bigger and uglier. We had quite a laugh at that.
The most peculiar thing happened at the restaurant we had lunch. It was a terrace with a breathtaking view over the Aegean Sea. We’d decided to stay for a while and ordered more iced tea, making ourselves comfortable under the big parasol. We had both brought a book, and for a while we read in silence. A repetitive sound of paper being ripped, caught my attention.
An elderly woman had taken up residence at the table next to ours. She had short frizzy hair, more grey than brown now, her glasses were round with a white frame. The summer dress she wore had big patterns in green, red, white, and orange. On her feet were white flip-flops.
“Stop staring,” Timothy whispered.
He startled me and I looked annoyed at him, but averted my eyes and took a sip of my drink. The moment the sound of ripped paper reached my ears again, my eyes were drawn to the spectacle at the other table.
The woman read a book too. A paperback. The curious thing I almost couldn’t fathom, was that whenever she finished a page, she ripped it out and placed it in a pile under her plate. Why would anyone want to do such a thing? What if you needed to go back some pages to look up something you’ve missed. It could never be read by another person, since she apparently left pages wherever she sat down to read. It bore no logic, and it irked me.
“Aren’t you curious about why she does it?” I whispered to Timothy.
“Not particularly. My book is far too interesting, and you won’t get an answer unless you ask her, and I guess you aren’t inclined to do that,” was his phlegmatic answer.
Timothy’s ability to turn off the world and disappear into his reading or writing, was admirable, but now it almost made me jealous of his book. I wanted to speculate with someone, solve this odd conundrum. There would be no more reading on my part after this, so I took out my phone instead.
Want to solve a mystery for me?
Pray tell! I’m bored to death and about to shoot the wall. P
Also available on AO3
Friendly warning: after 25 years the mystery is still unsolved. Don’t be shy about suggesting what the meaning of this appalling behaviour could be 🤭

Mastering the Art of Glass Painting: A Comprehensive Guide
Welcome to the world of glass painting, where creativity meets craftsmanship to transform ordinary glass surfaces into works of art. Whether you're a seasoned artist or a beginner exploring a new medium, mastering the art of glass painting opens up a realm of possibilities. From vibrant stained glass effects to subtle transparent hues, the versatility of glass paints allows for endless creative expression.
With a variety of glass paints and painting kits available, the journey to creating stunning glass art pieces is both exciting and rewarding. From quality paints that offer brilliant colors to waterproof and heat-resistant options that ensure longevity, the key to achieving professional results lies in understanding the unique properties of each type of glass paint. Whether you're looking to adorn windows, vases, or any other glass surface, this comprehensive guide will equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to elevate your glass painting projects to new heights.
Materials and Tools
In the world of glass painting, having the right materials and tools is essential to achieving beautiful and long-lasting results. When it comes to glass paint, quality is key. Look for paints specifically designed for use on glass surfaces to ensure vibrant colors and durability. A glass painting kit can be a convenient option, as it typically includes a variety of colors, brushes, and other essential tools to get you started.
Transparent glass paint is ideal for creating a stained glass effect, allowing light to pass through the painted surface for a stunning visual impact. For Types of drying equipment explained that require added protection, consider using waterproof glass paint. This type of paint forms a permanent and waterproof seal, ensuring your artwork remains intact even in humid or wet conditions.
In addition to the paint itself, other tools such as heat-resistant glass paint, brushes, palette knives, and stencils can help you achieve various techniques and effects in your glass painting projects. When working on intricate designs or fine details, colored glass paint and glass spray paint can offer precision and versatility. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced glass painter, having the right materials and tools at your disposal can make a significant difference in the outcome of your creations.
Techniques
In glass painting, technique is key to achieving stunning results. One popular technique is the tracing method, where a design is transferred onto the glass using a glass paint outline. This allows for precise detailing and control over the final outcome. Another technique is the sponging method, which creates a textured effect by dabbing paint onto the glass surface with a sponge. This technique is great for adding depth and dimension to your artwork.
For those looking to create a stained glass effect, the leading technique is essential. Leading involves outlining different sections of the design with strips of lead, creating divisions between colors. This technique adds a traditional touch to your glass painting and can be a rewarding way to bring your artwork to life. Experimenting with different techniques can help you discover your own unique style and enhance the overall visual impact of your glass paintings.
When it comes to painting on glass, understanding the firing technique is crucial. Firing refers to the process of heating the painted glass to make the colors permanent and durable. Proper firing ensures that your artwork remains vibrant and long-lasting, able to withstand the test of time. Whether using a kiln or an oven, mastering the firing technique is vital for achieving professional results in glass painting.
Applications
Glass painting offers a wide range of applications for both beginners and experienced artists. Whether you are looking to create colorful suncatchers, personalized glassware, or intricate stained glass windows, the versatility of glass paint allows for endless creative possibilities.
With the right glass painting kit and quality paint, you can easily transform plain glass surfaces into beautiful works of art. From vibrant colors to subtle shades, glass paints provide excellent coverage and transparency, making them suitable for various projects such as decorative ornaments, candle holders, and even picture frames.
The waterproof and heat-resistant properties of certain glass paints make them ideal for outdoor applications as well. Enhance your garden decor with weatherproof glass painted plant pots or add a touch of elegance to your patio with personalized glass lanterns. The permanent and durable nature of these paints ensures that your creations will stand the test of time, maintaining their beauty for years to come.

When Draco returns to the UK after two decades of building his career as an internationally-renowned artist to look after his ailing, estranged father, he crosses paths with his former flame, Harry Potter, in the most unexpected way.
Harry wanders in and out of view from an upstairs window, pushed open to let the fresh air in. He stops, obviously sensing a stranger in the vicinity of his wards, and Draco grips the handle of his rucksack hard, his head tilted back, his face flushed from the rain and the sun, his lungs tight. It’s as if Draco knew where, exactly, to look. It’s as if he knew, where, exactly, he’d find the still point of the turning world—Harry, who at thirty-nine is rose-golden and everything and too much and at this moment, too close and too far away, somehow. Harry leans out of the window. His hair is as wild and curly as ever, his beard dark. He’s filled out a little, but his glasses are the same, his scar is the same, and his stunned expression is the same expression Draco recognises from a lifetime ago, and when Harry opens his mouth to speak, nothing comes out. Draco feels the magic around him sizzle, then slip off, like a wave approaching the shore only to disappear again. “It’s you,” Draco breathes.

If I see one more stupid take on the stop oil van gogh protest im gonna lose it so in bullet points:
The painting is fine. It was behind glass. The person who threw the soup knew it was behind glass beforehand.
The UK is entering a cost of living crisis unlike any we've seen before (with the possible exception of Thatcher's Britain back in the 80s), and many people cannot afford to heat their homes. While oil and energy companies report record profits.
The point of this exercise was to demonstrate how much more people would care about even the thought of a painting being destroyed, compared to the reality of the lives that WILL be destroyed over the winter. When they can't yknow. Afford to eat or heat their homes.
No, they are not funded by Big Oil. Just Stop Oil DOES receive funding from the climate emergency fund which WAS started by Aileen Getty, yes. But she has zero active investments in the oil industry, and HAS spent a large amount of money sponsoring climate groups. Think of her as the Abigail Disney of oil.
The source of that conspiracy theory is a tiktok video and its mostly being reported in the telegraph which. Kinda says everything.
For people saying stuff like "but it had nothing to do with oil! Why don't you egg the houses of execs <3 Why don't you riot 😊 Why don't you kill oil execs uwu OK why don't you? I mean jesus be realistic. The rioting may come yet but this was a PUBLICITY STUNT. To raise awareness for their organisation.
If you are not from the UK/are from the UK and not familiar with the new protest laws, please refrain on commenting at all about method of protest.
The bill is as follows:
" [to] Widen the range of conditions that the police can impose on public assemblies to match existing police powers to impose conditions on public processions."
" [to] Broaden the range of circumstances in which police may impose conditions on a protest."
" [to] Amend the offence relating to the breaching of conditions"
" [to] Restate the common law offence of public nuisance in statute."
Meaning, any people doing ANYTHING the police don't like (up to and including holding BLANK SIGNS which happened after the queen died) can now result in arrest and forced dispersal (ie police violence). (There are more lines to the bill ive just chosen the ones relevant to this situation, but they're all on the gov website)
(Side note): I actually just read the page on gov.uk which I went on to copy the law and jesus christ they outright blame BLM protests for this. Like explicitly.
I BELIEVE i saw a story not that long ago about someone arrested under this bill being held without trial for like, months but I can't remember the details
In short people in the UK now have to get increasingly creative with how we protest, so as to avoid significant sentences. The two in this case were arrested for trespass instead of under this bill, which carries a significantly more minor penalty.
Shift your goddamn focus away from stupid conspiracies for a second and pay attention to what is happening in REALITY.
(If any of you make comments or send me stuff about this without at least attempting to fact check yourself beforehand im not responding, and deleting.)

god, i'm just yelling, this is SO QUEER, this fucking story
the way you see dream, imprisoned, reflected in hob's glass in 1989
the METAPHOR of that. hob in '89 pushing the envelope of social perception to talk openly about his relationship with dream to the bartender at this pub??? while dream is imprisoned in a physical prison, and kept imprisoned there by his own pridefulness and inability to ask for support??? fuck
paired with the quote from the comics of dream having revelations about his imprisonment -- "The problem, he realized, was that those who had power enough to help him, he had not furnished with motive. While those who might aid him willingly, he had not provided with means. It came to him that if he had merely trusted more freely, his captivity might have been short indeed. But then... whom to trust?"
something something metaphor for self-isolation and lack of community and internalized homophobia
AND just... the visual transitions in these scenes -
dream's prison taking the shape of hob's glass—this last glass of liquor hob thinks he might get to drink in this memory-steeped space that has been their meeting place for six centuries. this glass of liquor that the bartender offers him as a silent sign of solidarity—the glass, symbolic of freedom and connection, the two things that dream in that precise moment utterly lacks, cut off from the dreaming as he is, but both things he could find in hob when he is ready, because hob is determined to wait for him
the subtext with the bartender—hob in conversation with queer elders, the glen grant, "old enough to be [hob's] father," "i'm older than i look," "in a hundred years"—speaking to longevity, to living beyond adversity, to surviving in the AIDS crisis
the visual transition from dream in his prison to dream's face reflected in the barrier as he stands in front of the barricade and hob's spray painted sign. he's free, he's ready to accept the love hob is offering him. and the momentary heartbreak in his face when he thinks he might be too late, before he sees the spray-painted sign - god, just the absolute revolutionary queer energy and malicious compliance of hob using his queer buying power to secure the new inn and breaking the law by doing graffiti so that dream will find him
the fucking hopeful, heartfelt, tender music that plays as dream follows the sign to the new inn??? the way he walks so slowly, so deliberately as though he's bracing himself for hob not having waited. the way he moves through the grass almost wistfully, like he's walking toward a dream he's had for more than a century. the way he looks around the bar and zeroes in on hob.
history professor hob!!! radical queer elder hob gadling, who looks mid-30s but has seen and felt his community's pain and loss and can bridge the gap between queer past and queer present. hob unlearning his biases and learning and growing to understand and fight against the structural inequalities and systems of oppression he perpetrated in his own past! fostering future generations of loving, caring, compassionate humans. giving people a safe space
the new inn as a Queer Safe Space, the MEANINGFULNESS of that, when queer-specific spaces are dwindling in UK, US, and other worldwide cities—this article from july 2022 states, "Take London, for example. In 2017, a pivotal audit by the Urban Laboratory at University College London revealed that since 2006, the number of venues for LGBTQ Londoners had fallen from 124 to 47, a loss of nearly 60 per cent." as of january 2021, only 15 nightlife spaces for queer/gay women were left in the US and there are literal community projects in place to try to preserve queer safe spaces
the idea of this carving out of space, calling to mind the queer chosen family, the importance of community
the way dream and hob smile at each other at the end. open, so open, so full of genuine warmth. together again and not to be parted. in the place that was meant for them, this place that is a reinvention of an even older place they had made their own - in the new inn that exists simply because of their love for each other
DREAMLING IS A QUEER GIFT, THEIR STORY IS SO IMPORTANT
