sorry that my heart is full of hate disclaimer, anyway. i can’t stand that edward booktuber and i can’t remember the specific video, but there’s this one where he says something to the effect of “i always make sure to pronounce an authors name correctly <3” and then a minute later he mispronounce both of fariha roisin’s names. ik my annoyance is misplaced and it’s a total bitch eating crackers moment and i don’t even care for their (roisin’s) poetry that much….. but like. die.

The worst thing about [previous post] is that you know that even if the professors and experts tried to teach these kids what proper critique looks like, only a small percentage would be persuaded and the rest would simply scoff and call the experts "pedantic". It's come to the point that people have no concept of enjoying something, flaws and all, bc they truly believe that liking something means espousing every single opinion and concept represented without question. Like "oh you like Jane Eyre? what about the racist and misogynistic connotations of Bertha's storyline?" and no matter how much you explain you are aware of them and critical, you can still enjoy Jane Eyre, they don't get it. It's all or nothing and it's bleak.

Hello, Jamie! I’m here once again to annoy you about bookt*k readers and such! I’m part of a gc for fic writers and the other day they were talking about how people are reading less according to an article (they posted the link to the article too) then someone said it’s unfair they don’t count fanfic as “reading”, and then the others started showing what they’ve been reading and saying they’re pretty much ‘published fics’’, full of tropes and no variety it’s like… it’s the same stories over and over again, I don’t get it ??? Idk they sounded proud of only reading those books and I feel BAD and don’t say anything when they talk books there because the books I read aren’t at all these types of books ? I feel like they would think I’m showing off or that I’m being pretentious and that’s so stupid, honestly. I know amazing people who write wonderful fics as a hobby, fics that aren’t tropey, either, and they don’t go on saying they should count that type of story as “books read this year” but unfortunately most people are going this way where it’s easier and more comfortable to only read the same types of books and then write things only inspired on those BECAUSE THAT’S ALL THEY READ!!!!! I just wish I could tell them they’d gain so much by expanding their horizons, it upsets me a lot and I have no idea what I should do about it… :(
anon i'm soooo sorry :(( i think my tags on this old post really sum up how i still feel about the whole booktok/bookfluencing thing
Tumblr media
like reading should be fun. i love reading! it's a great time. and i don't wanna get into all the discourse of like what ~counts~ as reading or about ~bad books~ or whatever. i just want people to think. i want people to try new things, i want people to learn stuff, i want them to make themselves uncomfortable sometimes, i want people to broaden their horizons!
and i love fanfic, i love reading it, i love writing it, i've read some of the most beautifully written fic in the world that outdoes loads of trad-published books. but. but. there is a distinct line between fic and published books. at least, there should be. there's a post somewhere around here that says it all more eloquently than i could but tropes are supposed to be bonuses, not the whole thing. books are supposed to have actual content, not just buzzwords and phrases that they genuinely aren't even using correctly (i'm taking "morally gray" out of the booktok lexicon forever, and nobody is allowed to use "bad boy" until tessa bailey personally apologizes to me for calling a golfer a "bad boy.") and i know it's a tricky thing to talk about without sounding pretentious and/or misogynistic. like i'm sorry but it's just bad. it's fast fashion for books, like that one person said. flimsy and forgettable. and it isn't just romance, either! i have read some frankly ridiculous booktok-y mysteries and thrillers. it's ridiculous.
ultimately all you can really do is recommend good books to people. try to get them talking & thinking about books with, you know, substance. unfortunately you can't make them actually read it, but maybe if you hype it up enough, they'll try it! at least, i'd like to think that would work. good luck, anon 🫶🏻

sometimes I wonder if there's something wrong with my taste because whenever I read books that get popular on bookt*k/bookt*be I often end up disliking them. but then I always conclude actually my taste is fantastic and it's the youth who are wrong

The s*m fandom is honestly a bit toxic. I’ve seen people get sent death & r/pe threats because they ship Azriel with a certain priestess, and have even said those two characters couldn’t be together because she’s a survivor of assault. It’s gross to think survivors can’t have consensual sex of their choosing. I get scared to voice that I ship Azriel with Gwyn because I don’t want to get bullied. There’s negativity on all sides. I miss how things used to be for fandoms, all fandoms, in general. People were excited about sharing their art, their edits, and creating headcanons, but now it seems people are always wanting to bring another person down.
Anyways, on a positive note, I love your Jason fics! Jason Todd has my whole heart and I love him.❤️
censoring the names because i don't want to accidentally end up on an ac0tar blog's fyp and get dragged lmao
yeah nonnie :((( i’m not part of the s*jm fandom but i do remember seeing stuff about that. i think there’s just always going to be a demographic within any group of fans who are just. actually batshit insane and not in a fun silly way. i 100% agree about g.wyn btw, i think it’s weird to dismiss a character’s agency in the name of reclaiming agency ?
there’s a lot of things wrong with most fandoms and this is a generalisation of course but i’ve noticed w a lot of the (bookt*k) ac0tar fans that they just don’t have much reading comprehension or critical thinking skills (ex. g.wyn/azr1el, claiming the bat.boys as poc etc.) and this isn’t to say that i didn’t enjoy reading that series because there’s parts of it i enjoyed! i love analysing the book series but also i think that fandom is guilty of giving the author way more credit than she's due (sort of like jkr if i'm being honest - esp with the representation aspect where actual canon is quite subpar and shallow)
trashy books are a guilty pleasure of mine like, i don't read them as much anymore but i do kind of have fun reading the silly amazon books with awful descriptions and even worse characters that make you want to scream because they're so unserious i have to laugh. i just don't like to interact with a lot of the takes within that space because they make me want to scream and not in a funny way !
also!!! thank you so so much hehehe i love jason and i'm glad u enjoy my fics, it means so much to me!! i'm sending u love <333

Do you think bookTyrion could fall in love with Dany like he did on the show? Thus creating GRRM’s bloody triangle with her and Jon? I’ve been trying to imagine it, and I just don’t see it. BookT is such a vindictive spirit, just killed his “love” and his father, focused only on revenge. I have a hard time imagining him loving anyone new - though he might well have some possessive feelings about Sansa and think she owes him something (like antis think she does). But why did the show go that way
Dear nonny,
I don't think Tyrion (that is Book Tyrion) ever loved anyone but his brother Jaime. And he is fond of Tommen and Myrcella but not enough to not use them for politics.
His relationship to Tysha might have developed into love of his father had not robbed him of that.
I would say that Show Tyrion loved Shae but still was too ambitious to leave KL for her sake. And Book Tyrion did not love Shae. He wanted to be loved /worshipped by her and deluded himself into thinking he could have a relationship with someone he payed for sex.
I would argue that Tywin really messed up Tyrion and that Tyrion's obsession with the Lannister legacy and coming out on top is a desperate attempt first to get his father's approval and then to show him posthumously that he, Tyrion, is just the best at the game of Thrones. Revenge is not Tyrion's only motive I think. I think by the end of ADWD he wants to prove himself to the world. He will get the Rock and thwart his father's plans... All the while really embracing Tywin's legacy of using each and everyone for his purpose.
I do think that this is what will define Tyrion's relationship with Dany in the books. Dany is easily manipulated if you push the right buttons (e.g. The Shavepate convincing her to torture the wineseller's daughter). And Dany as a conqueror from outside is Tyrion's only chance to get what he wants. Only if she wins Tyrion's patricide can be pardoned and he can get the Rock.
Now, that does not exclude that Tyrion would find Dany attractive and maybe even want a) to sleep with her and b) for her to accept and love him. But that wouldn't be the main driving force behind their relationship. Dany is Tyrion's key to the Rock. For the same reason Tyrion is not likely to just give up his claim on Sansa.
You could even argue that it is doubtful whether he loved her on the show. In their scenes together he was always the advisor, never made any advances. The strongest argument would be his look of jealousy (?) after he saw Jon enter Dany's cabin and the Jon/Tyrion convo when he is imprisoned.
If you suspect Tyrion's motives you could argue that he wants to save his own skin. If Jon kills Dany that is the only way that he can hope to survive. And for this purpose it might make Jon more inclined to act if Tyrion shows himself as someone with morals who believed in Dany (insinuating that he himself would do it if he had the chance). Or if you want to believe Tyrion's remorse you could argue that it is a mixture of both.
I could actually see GRRM doing this: Tyrion gets his revenge and realises that he went too far and lost. It would be in tune with 'Be careful what you wish for. You might get it' which happens quite a lot in ASOIAF. And Tyrion has a track record of talking himself out of a trap. I still don't think Tyrion should survive since he is a kinslayer and Hand Tyrion and King Bran just don't fit together, but we'll have to see what GRRM does.
As I said for Book Tyrion Dany is a tool to get what he wants. His only option. As for a man like that falling for Dany we already have this in Jorah Mormont, we don't need another. And I must admit I find Show Tyrion in love with Dany hard to believe. She has been of two minds about him : praising him for his cleverness and ignoring his advice. It was never a smooth counsellor situation. And Tyrion doesn't like if people don't listen to him, even Show Tyrion. It doesn't make sense for him to love her, to yearn for bring loved? Maybe, but that is not the same. It is just another case of the lack of careful character building and consistency. It all comes down to the fact that you might come up with a plausible explanation for any given scene in season 8, but never with one that covers all the character scenes (not to mention that this explanation might them not fit to other characters).
Anyway that is my take, thanks for the ask!

Just message me your Facebook or something, if anyone is going to be at Oslo pride and wanna meet up! Also, just make sure you get the right date, I’m not sure if the date has been set yet but it would suck if you arrived after the parade took place. I know it was 26th last year, tried finding out when it would be this year but couldn’t find much info :/
