LGBTQ+ RIGHTS IN RUSSIA ARE BEING ERODED COMPLETELY
The ministry of justice in Russia has proposed to label "the global organization of LGBT" an extremist group. The court case is set to happen on the 30th of November. If passed, this measure will make LGBTQ+ activism near impossible. Activists could face up to 6 years in prison. Yes, 6 years for advocating for equal rights.
Despite the fact that lawmakers have no legal footing to judge "the global organization of LGBT" as an existing group, considering there is no hierarchy, no leader and no such name is used widely, this will probably be passed. And the lives of queer Russians will be in jeopardy.
I beg of you to spread this post. I know it's exhausting considering everything that's happening in the world. I know the genocide in Palestine is more pressing, I know the war in Ukraine is still happening, but please. We need to be heard. Someway. Somehow.
I'm Russian, I'm queer, I will not let this regime break me. no matter how hard it tries.

so, today we, russian queers, may become "extremists" by decision of russian supreme court and thus our existence will be silenced and erased. any queer activism will be impossible for us. I don't know what to do anymore. I was heartbroken when they passed the laws about "gay propaganda" and transgender people, now I'm just numb. I don't want to escape. I just want to live safely in my own country.
please hear us.

So, as you may already know, Russian Supreme court has banned 'international LGBT movement' as an 'extremist organisation'. I rarely post something, but let me share some news and tell you how the situation feels to me, a bisexual 22yo living in Russia.
Now, according to law, you will face up to 12 years of imprisonment if you somehow show that you're gay or support gay rights - even if you're wearing a 6-colour rainbow pin on your T-shirt. Even if you're holding hands.
Yesterday a TV channel in Saint's Petersburg was fined for showing a music video for a song by Sergey Lazarev (you may remember him as a Eurovision participant in 2016 and 2019) where two girls are showing affection. In the official statement, the vid was described as containing 'fragments showing interacting hands (caressing each other) belonging to two different people of the same sex, i.e. potentially perceived as a tactile, sensual interaction of individuals broadcasting their homosexual preferences'.
Here's the link to what is considered containing extremism in Russia btw.
youtube
I have a girlfriend, we've been together for 2 years now. We used to hold hands when outside sometimes - not in super public places, but you know, quiet spots in a park where you are unlikely to meet anyone. Physical touch is one of my main love languages, and having my gf touch my shoulder to reassure me or take my hand to show affection means so much to me. My heart actually skips a beat when she does that.
Yesterday, we were taking a stroll in a park. She took my hand, and after a few seconds with a corner of my eye I noticed a man passing by watching us with a weird look. And my heart skipped a beat for another reason.
'He's gonna report to the police!!!' - it screamed. 'We're fucked!!!' - it screamed even louder. I let go my girlfriend's hand. We looked at each other, having the same thought.
It was scary.
We decided never to hold hands when outside again.
We are planning to move in this January. And it is so scary that people might notice. That there might be a neighbour that would rat you out. That you might forget changing pronouns from 'her' to 'he' while mentioning your partner - and spend years in jail.
Yesterday, there were raids of special police units on LGBTQ+ night clubs (that are not saying openly what they actually are ofc) under the pretense of 'illegal drug sale'. People were not let out without taking a photo of their passports.
Two of my queer friends were supposed to go there and ended up not going only because one of them didn't feel well. He was so lucky not to feel well.
Some might say that we should know better than to hold hands in parks and go to undercover gay clubs knowing we're living in Russia - that we could live without this provocation. That is not entirely false.
But the thing is, even two years ago, when I started dating my girlfriend and before the war in Ukraine, no one seemed to really care. I can't speak for the entire LGBTQ+ community, but I'd say if we were living quietly our undercover gay life, we were more ignored than actually oppressed. Even when the 'LGBT propaganda law' was passed, at least you could get away with a fine for showing a rainbow. Now you don't. We won't hold hands or go to gay parties, you win.
And that's scary.
I would love to know how to fight, but I'm just so tired.

today, the supreme court of russia declared the non-existent "international lgbt movement" extremist. today, the supreme court of russia declared all russian queers to be extremists. they declared love and freedom illegal, extremist, and criminally punishable. some time before that, "gay propaganda" was banned in russia. this concept includes even the simplest manifestations of love. we cannot talk about ourselves, we cannot save ourselves, we cannot love, feel loved and protected in our country. if we fight for ourselves, we will go to jail. we were forbidden not only to love — they banned us. ordinary people who simply do not fit into their concept of "traditional" and "correct". so please
talk about us. hear us out. help us if you can.

-"Extremists"-
I cant even begin to express how devastaded I am about this. Luckily I dont live in Russia, but the thought of my home country wanting to kill people like me is heartbreaking. I hope that someday we'll be able to express who we are openly again. Until then, stay strong dear lgbt+ people who live in Russia right now.

So, the ban has passed
Be gay do crime is becoming disappointingly easy these days. The first part at this point is pretty much enough to have the second part covered.
I would advise fellow Russian queers to keep a cool head as panicking/giving in to despair isn't really going to help anything. Shit's still as vague as it can be, so we don't know yet what exact repercussions will follow the ban. A good extremist, after all, is a mentally stable, well informed and well rested extremist.
Заранее рекомендую глянуть стрим Кочеткова в 19:00 по Москве, он всегда даёт очень трезвую оценку ситуации, да и вообще разбирался в этом с самого начала:

Did y’all hear about this law Russia made few days ago?
LGBTQ+ in Russia now is an extremist move.
Now you can get 12 YEARS IN JAIL only bc you wear rainbow pin without one specific color.
Now you can get 12 YEARS IN JAIL only bc you love, meanwhile murderers get 6 years (to 15, but it depends; ANYWAY THE MIN ONE IS 6 YEARS, NOT 12.)
I dont live in Russia, but i speak russian and live in half-russian family. Biggest part of my family and close people lives in Russia, and part of them are queer. I dont want to believe im illegal in country with my close people only bc of who i am. In Russia me and my trans/queer brothers, sisters and siblings taken as someone like murderers. Is that ALRIGHT, RUSSIA?

Gay Icon Verka Serduchka
Verka Serduchka (aka Andriy Danylko) is the most famous drag persona in the Ukraine.
Danylko invented the character of Verka Serduchka in 1990. Verka is a flamboyant middle-aged woman from a rural family and makes a living as a railroad sleeping car attendant. Since then Verka has rocketed to stardom.
Tumblr media
Verka represented Ukraine in the 2007 Eurovision competition with the song “Dancing Lasha Tumbai”. The selection of Verka was controversial and heavily criticized in local media and by Ukrainian politicians, saying Verka was “grotesque and vulgar". But Verka got the last laugh - the song came in 2nd in a field of 24 countries.
Tumblr media
A writer for the British newspaper The Guardian even called "Dancing Lasha Tumbai" as the "best song never to win Eurovision".
Later Verka was a judge on the show that picks future Ukraine Eurovision representatives, and appeared in Melissa McCarthy’s film “Spy” (2015). Verka also judged on X-Factor on Ukrainian TV (2016-2019) and The Masked Singer (2021).
Although Andriy Danylko threatened to retire his Verka persona, he continue to perform in drag - especially as a voice against Russian’s invasion of Ukraine. Verka has performed in numerous fundraisers for Ukraine.
Verka sold Freddie Mercury’s 1974 Rolls Royce at auction in 2022, for £250,000. The auction house waved fees and the buyers premium. So that entire proceeds (£286,250 or $327,600) were donated to help fund a modern rehabilitation and prosthesis center in Ukraine for victims of the war.
Andrii Danylko was awarded the Order of Merit Third Class in 2022 by the President of the Ukraine.
Danylko has stated that he does not appear in drag outside of performing as Verka. It’s also been reported he occasionally dates women. But Verka is still an inspirational LGBT+ icon.

Hello! I don't know who i should connect to about this.
You may be familiar with the general situation of trans and generally queer people in russia. Since the start of war in Ukraine, the law, that was in force for about 10 years and banned "LGBT propaganda" for minors (in fact, it banned any information to teenagers and any materials that are in any way related to queer people and potentially accessible to minors) was changed to a complete ban on “LGBT propaganda”.
In October of this year, russia completely banned documentary and medical transition for transgender people and significantly restricted their other rights. More specifically here: https://www.thepinknews.com/2023/07/25/vladimir-putin-trans-healthcare-ban-russia/ On November 30, the russian Supreme Court classified the “international LGBT movement” as an “extremist organization.” What this means exactly is explained in detail here: https://meduza.io/en/cards/russia-has-banned-the-so-called-international-lgbt-movement
The activist team “Quarteera” has started a petition calling for easier access to refugee status for trans* people from Russia in Germany (e.g. the possibility of applying for refugee status for people already in Germany without having to travel to russia to submit documents).
🟣 The petition can be read and signed here until December 18th: https://epetitionen.bundestag.de/content/petitionen/_2023/_08/_22/Petition_156274.html
Residents of other countries can sign too. I would be very grateful if you would sign the petition and help spread the word.
The petition is in German, but anyone can sign!
According to Wikipedia, the group behind the petition is involved in numerous educational activities and demonstrations that aim to help LGBT+ Russian migrants and their families in Germany.
"Quarteera is a Russian-speaking non-profit volunteer LGBT registered association in Berlin, Germany. The association was officially registered in April 2011 and calls itself the "Russian-speaking group of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender people and their friends in Germany"."
Quarteera's website (in Russian)
An informational Reddit post about the situation.

Russian Supreme Court To Hear Justice Ministry Lawsuit Calling For LGBT Movement To Be Designated 'Extremist'
The Russian Supreme Court will hear a lawsuit filed by the Justice Ministry calling for the "international LGBT movement" to be designated "extremist" and its activities in Russia banned. The lawsuit will be heard on November 30, according to the Justice Ministry's website. The lawsuit, filed on November 17, alleges that "signs and manifestations of an extreme nature" had been identified in the "activities of the LGBT movement operating on the territory of the Russian Federation." The activities, the ministry added, included "the incitement of social and religious hatred" that it said violate Russia's Law on Countering Extremist Activity. The ministry did not define what it considered the "international LGBT movement" to be in its lawsuit. More >
