Bookbinding for Beginners by a Beginner part 4- Quarto Edition

SO QUARTOS! I've mentioned them a few times between 1 - 3 posts. So let me just jump into Quarto before I get into "Now I have this neat-o type faced document that I have split off... so what do I do now o' gremlin writing these posts???

I believe in being a tease sometimes, plus if I don't do it now while I'm remembering shit I won't do it.

ONWARD!

SO What is a quarto?

Well a Folio is 4 pages per one sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper.

A Quarto is 8 pages per one sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper.

And these things will BREAK you if you don't pay attention. Tiny, mighty and o-so-sweet looking.

Behold a text block I have finished up with end pages tacked on but this is 8.5 x 5x5 on the bottom... on the top? THAT is a quarto... about 5.5 x 4.5

SO what do you do? HOW do you get a quarto?

I will mention again- that this is for fics 50K or less. The sweet spot for me seems to be somewhere around 20-30k or less. But that's just me.

Well like previous go through your formatting as you usually would but for the text body itself the font size will need to be increased. Not unless you enjoy squinting or using Sherlock Holmes' magnifying glass to read. I think you might need serious help but do you boo-boo.

I set my font size for folio around 11 or 12 depending upon my mood. For Quarto? I set the font size to 26 and that's just so it's legible.

I will keep all of the fic info at a smaller font size but that would be 11 or 12 now instead of a font size of 8 or so depending upon how much I'm using from the tags.

But it will be a lot of "See the previous post" for formatting.

The trick is going back to Bookbinder JS if you want to format word to spit out Quarto size- be my guest. I cheat. I choose the path of least resistance and less math you have to deal with.

There will be more mathing involved.

But back to Bookbinder JS:

Paper size and Duplex remains the same.

Page Layout section? Hit "Quarto" and upload your pdf file.

Going down to the signature you can do perfect bound (again paperback) or signatures (for stitched books). I keep to stitched books because honestly it's nice to not rely only on glue to keep your book together. But once again follow your happiness. I'm merely stating opinion. Don't take anything as gospel all I want to do is help people break into bookbinding and fan binding cause once you get the basics down I find it very relaxing.

With that aside out of the way, fiddle with the signature size- the more the signatures the more you're going to have to sew. But if you keep everything together it won't lay nice and neat and look rather bulky. So strike a middle ground.

NOW after you do your print off... you're going to have to fold each page... one by one... twice. You're going to have to play "Line the numbers up with each individual page" for the entirety of that signature. I suggest having the pdf open while you're doing this so you can jigsaw puzzle your way into a text block.

But fold down first, then fold that in half.

By the way I hope you have some sort of cutting mat and ruler and cutting hobby knives by this point cause you're going to have to shave the tops off of the pages so you can open it up and read it like a normal book.

I would only do this if you're like me, and have a fondness for smaller fics that you'd like on your shelf and also have a special breed of self inflicted masochism.

I'm a multi-tool of reasons as to why I've done this. One- I got curious as to how to do this. Two- it's now a hyper fixation and weekender hobby. Three- The sea has called me home and having copies of my favourite stories just sounds like making a boat a home to me. Four- I was born with the "Fuck it how hard can it be?" Gene. Five- that gene is a double edged sword but I'm at least spreading what little I know around for anyone that may wish to teach themselves how to do this.

Once you have everything folded, and trimmed, it's time to put that tiny precious stack of paper into your book press, and you compress it down like it owes you money and think of it as you getting your own back for having to do so much fucking math and folding.

NOW I can start getting into how to make loose pages of folded paper into something resembling a book.

It would be sad if it wasn’t scary to see narcissists get away with grifting people about it all. I at least can comfort myself that I didn’t get taken in and that I’m actually watching and enjoying TW something I’m not sure they know how to do with any TV show frankly

They don't, because realistically it's about them and trying to force their perspective, whether it's the true perspective.

In this case, they're the Men of Letters. A bunch of mostly white people that hate pre-christian mythos and swear up and down that these Akrida things are the bad guys invading they have to stop, even if that just enforced Chuck's christianization, and The One and those that Act As One have always been the true thing.

They scream over it. That even though Lata called this shit out verbatim, the authors couldn't possibly know. They MUST, they are culturally privileged dickheads that *can not comprehend the universe doesn't work the way they imagine it*, or that *people are complex, multifaceted creatures, even writers*, because they're still really only looking at themselves and what they want to see.

I can't imagine them having good readings on any show, really. SPN let them get away with delusions the longest due to fuckery, but this kind of mindset is innate and the lesson gathered here is something everyone needs to take with them well outside of Supernatural/TW so they avoid repeating this in the future.

I'm mad about the grifting thing on their part, yeah, they've fucked a lot of people over money, for luxury rides, gold passes, then give pocket change back to charity and tell themselves they're great righteous saviors, while actively attacking truth and creatives. These things do not absolve each other. If anything, it just further shows a lack of honesty in the motivation behind the charity drive--it's for image of self, which is why it took me turning up the heat for half a year about their grifting before they ran one. It's not about the trevor project, it's still about them.

I'm glad TP got *something* but instead of like 4K if they got the like 50K burned on the signatures and gold passes and travel for those scripts, that would have been a lot nicer, huh.

Either way I'd like to hope the impending end will make it clear enough to the people who made the unfortunate choice to join them thinking they were helping charity, as to what people's motivations and truths are in time. Cuz again, it's coming, and they can only lie to their internal cult-groomed userbase so many times to ignore the truth before they keep asking why reality keeps punching them in the face (ie: "but script fake!!!")

There's personal accountability for the people falling for it too. They, too, are driven by agendas and biases, so they aren't acting or listening critically or looking at the cracks, flaws, motivations, etc. They're not even inspecting their OWN motivations, why would they inspect the weird grifter? 2po swears he's doing it For Charity, and they tell themselves this is For Charity too (and maybe that's true in some small part), so... clearly!! They don't have to change anything! This somehow morally absolves them and even guards them from reality touching them, in their heads. Except it doesn't.

So it's less me ~feeling bad. People are still making their choices for their reasons, while actively choosing not to listen to the show.

I don't feel bad.

I'm like Robbie.

I feel vengeful.

After that, it's up to experimental treatments and will power to overcome the symptoms that he'll have to deal with for the rest of his life. Every step of his recovery is a struggle, but it's nice to have a therapist devoted to his well being, even if it forces him to make some decisions against his code of ethics. At least, in the end, he has hope.

summary: the second and final part to hard as nails! my 50k special!!! warnings: VIOLENCE!, a gross teenager, angst and fluff, um spiciness and swearing 2.5k words

peter parker left school that day with a hunch. he thought of the note, the knowledge that you attended the same school, the flirting, your voice...

and especially those red nails.

the same nails that belonged to you. the same ones that would pin his wrists down in several different places during fights. the same ones that stroked his cheek. it had to be you i mean, he had chills along with his spider sense. he knew it was you. and it kinda sucked. he liked you in school. he thought you were so cute and smart and sweet. and in the hero vs villain world? he thought you were mysterious and funny and...maybe a little sexy. your villain name, violet, flowed off his tongue so nicely and your hair when it blew in the wind on rooftops and your eyes that glistened under the moonlight. your signature red nails that could kill (my gosh) and your fucking party city mask.

it was y/n. it was you.

he bolted down the busy sidewalks of queens and changed into his spidey suit. his main and only focus was to track you down and find out what the fuck is going on. the only criminal he would catch tonight was you, no matter what.

you usually showed up in peter's path at some point every night, sharing some banter and flirting and the occasional play fight. but today was different. he couldn't find you. and sure it was new york but still, you always showed up and he started to worry. he swung around and around the proximity of queens several times for fun and on the lookout for you for hours.

meanwhile, you were at home doing some homework. sitting on your bed in your empty apartment writing down some notes and studying for tests. point being, you were trying to keep your mind off of daria at all costs even though she would probably find you and kill you if you didn't bring her peter. but you wanted to have a relaxing evening off your feet. maybe you would go out, maybe, you doubt it.

but you got bored, figured you'd head out on the town, steal some cash, buy yourself some treats before you get brutally murdered by a frightening middle aged woman. your victim was a kid from your school, total idiot who lived in your neighborhood and still went to midtown. you walked behind him on the sidewalk for awhile before grabbing his backpack and pulling him back into your arms.

"hey kid."

"oh my god," the kid hyperventilated, "you're that- you're that girl."

"mhm yeah i am. now give me your wallet and we won't have any trouble sweetie."

"okay," he stuttered our before reaching into his bag to pull out a wallet and hand it to you.

you dumped the contents onto the sidewalk, one hand still holding him in your grip. you fished through the items. there was loose change, a few twenty dollar bills, school id and a condom.

you held it up in his face, "really? you're that guy? you disgust me."

"i'm sorry!" he yelled.

"okay move along and get a life buddy."

you pushed him out of your path and headed down the street to a corner store which sold the greasiest funnel cake on planet earth that seemed to always be opened. you got the biggest order topped with literally everything they had and tossed a twenty on the counter pocketing the rest of your, well that kid's, cash.

you held your foam take out box filled with an enormous funnel cake and happily climbed you way up the fire escape to the nearest building. you were a little shocked you hadn't seen peter yet tonight but hey, maybe you scared him off. you sat down and enjoyed your funnel cake and watched the sunset over queens. what a nice night to be murdered.

you could still give peter up and save your own life but, deep down you couldn't. you had so much fun with him over the time you've been here and he never turned you in. he never hurt you. and you made a promise to him. he knew who you really were, a damaged kid who got caught up in the wrong crowd. but you were a shit head and peter was a hero. you stole stuff and he stopped the people who stole stuff. you couldn't risk his life for your own actions. it wasn't fair, and you realized that. now, it was time to be the good guy.

"violet," peter said, grunting as he hit the rooftop.

you turned your head to face him, "oh hey babe, want some funnel cake? i stole it sorta."

"no, i don't want stolen funnel cake. i wanna talk."

"about what," you said with a full mouth.

"about you."

"hey dude, you do this every night! i'm a bad person about to get beat and i'm trying to have a wonderful last meal."

"i'm not gonna beat you up."

"not what i meant."

"why?"

"why what?"

"why are you doing this? why are you protecting me?"

you paused, chewing and some powdered sugar fell on your leather pants, "because i know you're a good person. and i'm a shit head. and i realize that now. i just- i don't know if i can stop but anyways it will all be over tonight."

"what are you talking about," peter asked ripping off his mask.

you still faced away from him, eating, "she's gonna kill me."

"who?"

"daria. my mentor as one might say. she's gonna kill me since i didn't turn you in."

"i'm sorry what?"

"daria—"

"no i heard you just what the hell y/n, do you—" peter realized his mistake and covered his mouth with his gloved hands.

you groaned and chucked the rest of your funnel cake off the roof, "damn it man! how the fuck do you know?"

peter pulled his hands away, "the red nail polish, you should really be more careful."

you smirked, impressed, "says you."

"i'm learning," he said walking closer to you, "now whats this about getting killed."

you wrapped your arms around his neck and leaned in close to his face, "it doesn't concern you babe."

"seems like it does," he began, resting his hands on your waist, "since it's either me or you."

"don't worry, i'm doing you a favor," you laughed.

"yeah, that's your life. i'm not asking you to do this."

you stroked his hair, "i know. but i'm gonna."

"stop. i'll help you."

"no no no. look. i'll be at that run down place of 75th street. in two hours come and pick up my body. daria will be gone by then."

"violet- i mean, y/n, stop. i'm gonna help you."

"i don't need you to save me, hero. people need you more than they need me."

you squeezed yourself out of his arms and headed to the edge. you were about to get down to head to daria's when peter shot you with a web and pulled you toward him.

"woah there spidey, tying me up already? who know you were so kinky."

peter blushed, "listen to me. y/n i need you. i need you so so bad. you keep me grounded, i'm serious. you're a real pain in the ass sometimes but i love it. you're funny. and really really sexy might i add."

"ooh look who's flirting now."

"shut up," he laughed, "but i really need you. i'm not gonna let some middle aged woman kill you. that's not how you should go. i wanna get to know you. i can tell you don't like being a 'shit head' as you called it and i'll help you. i'll show you how to use your powers for good. we can be partners."

you smiled, thinking for a second, "i appreciate the offer but, you should just let me go."

"well these webs take two hours to dissolve."

"damn can you even last that long?"

"stop," he blushed, "i'm serious. i'm gonna help you. if you'll let me?"

you looked into his brown eyes filled with hope and slowly nodded, "okay."

"okay."

you both stood there on the roof, "so now what?"

"um we wait till my webs dissolve off you?"

"so what are you gonna do with me for the next two hours?" you smirked.

peter laughed, still blushing, "see this is what i'm talking about, a pain in the ass."

"but you love it," you laughed.

he did.

two hours later you were able to pull the webs off with the aid of peter. during those two hours you talked about all sorts of things. and you really wanted to change. you wanted to be good. and you devised a plan to take out daria.

peter swung the two of you over to daria's place and of course being you, you made several cheeky remarks which made peter almost drop you one or six times.

when you arrived, your body was almost shaking. you were actually terrified. peter put a hand on your back to calm you down and it helped a little.

"okay y/n are you ready? you go in first then i go in then we both kick her ass."

you nodded slowly.

"spidey?"

"violet?"

you grabbed his cheeks in both your hands and pressed a quick kiss to his lips, "see you on the other side."

you ran off, entering daria's apartment, leaving a blushing peter behind.

"holy shit."

you quietly entered daria's kitchen and called out for her.

peter came up to stand just outside the door to listen and be ready. he didn't doubt you, he just wanted to protect you. and goddamn he wanted to kiss you again.

"daria?" you asked into the empty kitchen.

"you're late," she said, "where is he?"

you said nothing.

"that's what i thought. i knew you could never do it deep down you bitch. it's almost midnight and no spider-man. you know what i said. you're going to suffer."

"what's your deal with him anyways?" you asked, steering away from the plan, "you're too lazy and fucking stupid to do anything yourself so you make me do dirty work. and you want me to rid off an innocent hero. fuck you."

shit. peter thought. this was gonna get real fighty real fast. but he nodded, it was kinda hot hearing you curse.

"don't play with me sweetheart, i protect you."

"i can protect myself. i'm done with you."

daria walked forward to you and slapped you across the face and kneed you in the stomach. you grabbed the side of your face.

"jesus what is it with you and slapping me?"

once peter heard the smack and busted right in the door and kicked daria square in the stomach. he ran to you in the kitchen to help you up.

"you okay?"

"yeah i will be babe, thanks."

daria got back up and tried the punch peter behind him but you swept her legs out causing her to pummel to the ground. she was too easy to beat. peter webbed her feet to the ground. and her hands together.

"oh c'mon taser web this bitch."

"no!"

you scoffed and walked to her side, "you're too easy to beat."

"so what, you're the good guy now?" she spat.

you looked to peter then back to daria, "yeah maybe. maybe i am."

then you pulled back your own hand and slapped her in the face.

"that's what you get bitch! you're done!"

peter grabbed your waist to prevent you from doing anything else and carried you out to the parking lot. he also called the police to get rid of that horrid woman.

"so now what?" peter asked.

"go to a rooftop? we have lots to talk about."

"you got it violet," peter winked, grabbing you again and webbing around to find a nice desolate roof.

he gently placed you down and sat next to you, taking off his mask.

"so," peter began, "what's up?"

"i'm sorry i kissed you."

"don't be. i...i liked it."

"really?"

"yeah. really. i like you, and not just violet, i like y/n, i like all of you."

you smiled, "i like you peter spider-man parker."

"good," he smiled.

there was a small moment of silence, both of you smiling over each other. and then you leaned into his side and grabbed the back of his neck, pulling him in for a passionate, well deserved kiss. it was long lasting and felt so good until peter pushed back your shoulder.

"so if i'm gonna teach you how to be good," he said licking his lips, "you have to know that i'm in charge."

"oh are you now, pretty boy?"

"mhm. now take off that mask."

you obliged, taking off your party city mask and throwing it on the roof, "there, how do i look?"

"hot as hell, babe."

"that's my thing," you reprimanded.

"hmmm i don't know."

you quickly swung a leg over peter's hips, straddling him tightly, and pushed on his chest till his back hit the roof and once again pinned his wrists down.

"babe, i think we all know who's in charge here," you whispered. peter left out a soft breath with his eyes closed, feeling you on top of him.

peter quickly brought his legs up and out pulling you up and then turning you so now your back was on the roof and he was straddling your waist.

"do we?" he asked, "because wow..."

he leaned in so close to your face that his messy brown curls were toxic hung your forehead.

"...you look even prettier underneath me."

you smirked, biting your lip, "you know, you don't look so bad on top. but if you're gonna teach me to be good, i'm gonna teach you to be bad."

"what no! i'm a hero!"

"no," you laughed, "like...dirty stuff."

"oh," he blushed.

"i can teach you so many things."

"can you now?"

"oh i sure can. i can show you a whole lot you've never seen before," you said.

peter's breath started to quicken and he just wanted to get at you right there.

"and you know, we're both pretty flexible," you joked.

"oh man y/n. you're gonna be the death of me."

it was his turn to kiss you. his lips moved against yours in a fiery passion, whilst still having you pinned down. it was the kiss of your dreams. he would groan into your lips every so often causing you to melt and when you hit his lip and just about lost it, letting go of your wrists and you took over the kiss.

who knew, a hero and an ex villain making out would ever be a thing?

Letter to myself, from 24 year old Diana

Hi there. I’m 24 year old Diana. Tomorrow I turn 25. And as I go back and read all my old “letters to myself” - jokes I didn’t read any leading up to this blog, buuuuut the times when I have gone back and read them, I’m always like "welp, I’m old now.” As if something just ticks over and boom, I’m old. It also becomes more and more ridiculous to read every year I get older, cause current me who is reading the letter from past me is always like, “You were so young and naive. You weren’t old back then. You’re old now.” But every year it’s the same thing. I freak out- because all of a sudden “I’m old”. And I maybe cry. For what? I don’t know. And then I carry on. And rinse and repeat. I actually found this old blog a week or so ago and read like, 5 sentences and was like “eh, I’ll come back to it”. And didn’t. But as I’m on the brink of 25 and wishing I had started this a few hours earlier, I find myself typing this letter to myself as appose to writing it like I usually do. I may still write one out, cause I love looking back at my old handwriting. But it’s so interesting to read and listen to the voice of my younger self. I always actually find myself thinking- wow what a cool person. She’s so nice and supportive, and so hurt and maybe a little broken, but overall a nice person. She’s always wanting the best for her future self. Always looking back at the past with sad eyes. Looking to the future with hope. And seemingly unhappy in the present. Annnnyway. Okay- so. How do I do this? I forget. Damn I figured it would just flow out of me, but it’s not. I’m a little stuck. I don’t even know where my old letters are to go back and read- damn I hope I can find them later..

Okay look- the last year, the last 365 days ago starting Sep 6th has been a real rollercoaster. For the world, for my family, for myself. 1. I have to start with Trump has been elected president. What the hell. Why this. 2. I got a new job and got MY FIRST RAISE. I moved from my >35k a year job at Inkman making stamps (and hating my life) to being a Product Designer at Preno a tech start up developing a property management app. Fancy speak for “our software helps hotels do their thang- make bookings, take payments, charge extras, send invoices etc. I’m not going into detail. But yeah. I moved from 47k to 50k if I’m not mistaken. 3. I moved out and moved in with Mark for our 4 year anniversary. Wow If I had told 16 year old Diana that her parents would let her move in with her long term boyfriend at the age of 24, she would not have believed me. Although I kinda didn’t ask. It stemmed from a huge fight where papa pulled everything out of my room while I was at Mark’s for the weekend and apparently yelled at Mama and Fat. And they rang me. And like ruined my day. And CJ and Sarah came over and I was so upset and we had to leave to go back to see them I think and clear my stuff from the hallway. And then a few days later we found a house I think? I don’t know- the timeline is all a bit hazy. 4. Mark and I celebrated our 5 years and went for our first degustation at Kazyua. 5. Grandpa passed away. And Uncle Jeff and Grand Uncle Vincent passed away :( Grandpa passing away was the hardest thing I have ever gone through. I was numb for months and didn’t trust my feelings or thoughts to not be grief stricken. I wish I had taken to writing at that time. Because I swear some hauntingly and honest things would have come out of me. Damn, I wish I had. Fuck. I also low-key struggle to remember how bad it was. Although I guess I could go back and listen to old Whatsapp voice notes. I really struggled with that. 6. I got Grandpas signature, a circle for a story Grand Uncle Vincent told me, and a tooth tattooed.

7. I build Preno’s new marketing website and and I’m the process of refreshing it. 8. We redesigned Settings and Reporting. You know- actually. See I wanted to do a year in review and a goals and values uhm, setting? Reflection? But this letter to myself is turning into that. Okay, look I wanna make this more personal. I’m gonna tell you- a lot of bad things have happened this year. We’ve had a lot of deaths in our family. I watched grandpas casket burn. It’s etched into my memory. But I also celebrated a milestone with my work and boyfriend. I up-skilled in my job. I became really good friends with Amanda Teo. I’m leaning eyeshadow. I started a blog that has yet to launch. I moved out. I’m pretty happy. I’m trending upwards. And the bad stuff- well, I guess that’s got to happen. Right? Death is inevitable. I want to tell you, 24 was a happy year. It was an incredibly sad year but also a good year. You’ve grown so much, looking back to the incredibly dark and unhappy girl you once were. You did design and got a job in it. You followed your dream and worked hard. Continue to work hard! Oh! You’re going to the gym now! It’s great! You’ve never been so fit and strong. When people ask “do you even lift?” you can say “yes, yes I do”. Wonder Woman came out and never have you ever heard your name said that many time. You have a Naruto tattoo in mind. Uhm. Please look after Grandma. She’s you last one. And she’s old. You currently give her money when you can. And visit her every week. Please go with her to buy a sari. It may be your last chance. You asked mama and papa for jewellery for Christmas. I’m/you’re (wow I’m bad at this like 1st person, 3rd person thing, I’m gonna stick to I) I’m really excited. You’re happy. And you’re doing well. I’m so proud of you, of where you came from and where you are now. Our parents rarely said they were happy for us. But I am happy for us. Remember you cant fight every idiot that you come across, or you’d get nowhere. But don’t be afraid to express yourself. Talking to the opposite sex isn’t flirting. You don’t owe anyone a relationship status. If they read you wrong then that’s on them, you can’t assume everyone is “up for grabs you pig”. You’re a feminist and be proud of it. Don’t get mad at Mark, just explain things to him calmly. He will learn. Talk to him. He loves you. It’s okay not to know things, and it doesn’t show weakness to not know things, just go an find out. Take your vitamins. Looks after your body, it’s the only one you have. Think about in input versus the output. The investment versus the return. Is the energy you put into a certain action going to be worth the outcome? Sometimes it’s best to think of the desired outcome and find the best path to that. Life is like a big chess game. Too bad I’m shit at chess. Tell mama and papa you love them whenever you can. It’s hard to type but you don’t know how long you have the people you love. Treat Mark every now and then, he looks after you. And pays for shit for you. SAVE YOUR MONEY. Think about the long term happiness over the short term. Please. This year you have not been good with money, although you have a bunch of cool things. OMG you have your USA trip coming up - for CJ and Sarah’s wedding, how grown up is it to be travelling for a wedding. Ooh-la-la. What a grown up. Jokes I had chocolate for breakfast yesterday. I hope Aunty Yvonne buys me that Hello Kitty balloon. I don’t know what else to say. I’m rambling at this point. And always leave things too late. Things being to write this letter. I will review my year and goals etc. tomorrow. What’s another day. Hahah. Uhm, yeah. Look after yourself and the ones you love. Try not to worry and stress too much. Try do what’s best for you and those around you. Be selfless but selfish when you need to. You don’t owe anybody anything except those who are important to you. Love yourself. Be safe. I love you and I’m proud of you. Be good to yourself. Stay cool. Be lame. Continue to not care what people think (although we know you kinda still do). Lots of love
