When I started shipping them:

I realized I shipped Micchy/Kouta/Mai (with a lot of work) AND Gaim OT3 and also that I loved Kaito and Micchy’s dynamic

My thoughts:

Micchy has a lot to work on before he could have a relationship with anyone, but the other two already forgave him, and he’d work hard to earn it. I don’t think he’d ever make the first move, however

Kaito slowly learning to see the strength in Mai and Kouta is really wonderful and tragic and I love every minute of it

Kaito and Micchy’s complicated relationship is a lot of fun to work with, especially because in the finale we can see Micchy finally finding some real strength, and it would be interesting if, when Kaito is revived in my Canon, he can see that while maybe Micchy still can’t

What makes me happy about them:

I have this hilarious image of a no powers AU where it really is just a dance rivalry. Until it isn’t. It’s sexual tension.

What makes me sad about them:

Canon. Need I say more? They all suffer and in some ways they all die. Kaito literally, and the other three lost who they had originally been.

“Is there something unusual about that group across the room?” Takatora says to his lunch companion, frowning. “Oren keeps peering at them, and it’s starting to worry me.”

“I mean, I didn’t, like, sense anything.” Kouta is as incognito as he’s capable of being, which is to say that he’s wearing normal clothing and his coloration is for the moment mostly human apart from his eyes. He’s got a cup of coffee in front of him--he claims to enjoy the smell, even though he can’t drink it. “Maybe he’s just being--oh shit, I know that kid.”

“You do? Was he a Beat Rider?”

“No, no, I know him from, like. Just a couple of years ago. Granted, the memory’s kinda fuzzy, which it shouldn’t be, and that’s worrying since I can't actually forget things now, but I’m pretty sure that’s Zi-O.”

Takatora blinks. “I’m sorry, that’s Zi-O? The young man in the black jacket?”

“No, I think that guy's a Rider too, I'm pretty sure they all are, but I mean the one next to him, in the pink shirt."

"...the one with frosting on his nose?" Takatora frowns. "Are you sure they're Riders? They look like a group of college students on a double date."

Across the restaurant, Geiz swipes frosting off of the tip of Sougo's nose with his finger and says, "How did you even get that there? Oh, hey, this is really good, I didn't realize it was lemon-flavored."

Woz--not quite perks up, he’s not perky, but Geiz does immediately have his attention. "Did you say lemon?"

Geiz holds out his hand and then turns bright red when Woz eyes him for a moment and then leans forward and licks the frosting off the tip of his finger. “Mm. That is very good.”

Tsukuyomi makes an affronted noise, presumably at having been denied lemon frosting, and so Woz kisses her because there’s still a little bit of frosting stuck to his lip, and while Geiz is trying to figure out how his life got to this point Sougo says, “Hey, I think those two guys are watching us.”

“Yeah, probably a lot of people are going to be watching us if Tsukuyomi and Woz keep making out like that.”

“We weren’t making out, I just wanted lemon buttercream.” Tsukuyomi takes a delicate bite of eclair.

“I doubt it’s anything to be concerned about,” Woz says, pink-faced as he turns his attention back to his slice of pie, “it’s just Gaim and Zangetsu.” Then he goes very still. “Ah. Actually, if Gaim takes exception to our presence that may be a very bad thing, he doesn’t typically return to Earth unless there’s a major concern.”

Sougo shrugs. “It doesn’t look like a crisis, I think they’re just on a date.”

Takatora realizes with some embarrassment that he’s been staring when the boy in the pink shirt catches his eye and waves cheerfully. Hesitant, he waves back, and the boy, who he’s still having difficulty believing is the potentially-dreaded Zi-O, beams at him.

“They look so young,” he says to Kouta. “I think they may actually be younger than my brother.”

“Well, yeah, Micchi’s like...twenty-one now? Pretty sure they’re all nineteen or something. Well, that Woz guy might be older, I don’t know what’s going on with him.” Kouta takes a deep sniff of his coffee. “They’re older than Micchi was when our stuff all happened, at least.”

“I suppose you’re right. It’s strange, isn’t it, how it persists.”

“What does?”

“Whatever circumstances create a need for Riders. You’d think saving the world once would be enough.”

“Well, sure, that’d be nice, but at least we did save the world. If we hadn’t then there wouldn’t be anything left to be in danger again.”

“That’s...oddly reassuring, thank you, Kouta.”

Kouta grins at him. “Sure thing, babe. Anyway--oh, hey, are you blushing, that’s so cute, you can’t just go being cute at me, it’s not fair.”

“I am not blushing,” Takatora says, knowing full well that he is. “I hope we’re setting a good example, though.”

“For who? Zi-O and his buddies?” Kouta glances at them again, waving when the tremendously dignified young man sitting at Zi-O’s left meets his gaze for a moment and then looks away. “I kinda hope they don’t try to follow my example, this coffee smells really good and it’s killing me that I can’t drink it. You think we should go over and say hi?”

Takatora sneaks once last look across the room, where Zi-O and his friends have dissolved into a minor dispute over the last pastry on their little sampler platter. “No, you know, unless the world starts ending within the next ten minutes I think we should leave them to it.”

RyuSen: There was one time they did this at home and their kids gagged over how sappy they both were.

Zi-OT3: A common sight since Sougo teaches ballroom. His students are kinda sick of how lovesick they can be

Aruto/Isamu: On some very bad days it’s one of the few things that can comfort both of them. The closeness helps

faiz - anybody, really. yuka would be my #1 but i’m not sure if her actress is still active in the industry. but since the faiz eps are coming up soon and we’ve only seen takumi & kusaka… i guess that’s the extent of who we’re getting. ah well

hibiki - want 2 see todoroki & zanki-san together again… though just like with kuuga they’re honestly more likely than our main rider

kyofushi ot4 comfort characters. i’m so sorry mizuta for you being at the bottom of this barrel but you just are. ishiyan is tied for 2nd place with komari because i swing back and forth between who is more comforting, there’s something about the fact that ishiyan is so warm and gentle and accepting whereas komari is a literal ghoul but he’s a good boy who needed support and acceptance. midousuji the Most comfort character right now literally every time i see him my soul is soothed and laid to rest.

manami comfort character he’s a good sunshine angel boy who is also maybe a little crazy but in a good way. also he’s beyond cute. he really is a best boy.

yuuto Big comfort character i love him. he’s so unique and cool. he stands out so much from his brother it’s amazing. i can’t believe he turned out to be an actual demon rather than just a normal dude with a demon color scheme.

fuck like most of sohoku. megane is Discomfort hugely i’d push him off every mountain if i could. naruko discomfort, don’t like him, or imaizumi either. mixed feelings on 2 of the senpai, maki-chan comfort though... he’s pure and i love him, he’s stylish and cool and a little awkward. issa comfort, i love issa, he’s dumb as fuck but god is it endearing. teshima comfort, for being a good senpai and a good captain and always being there for everyone. aoyagi... hhhhh.

kiriyama family comfort characters obviously with mitsuru and kazuo riding in the lead and kazuo the Most comfort character, he’s my son to this very day and i love him, one of the most uniquely written characters in existence who is beyond smart but impossibly deadly as a result of him. mitsuru comfort as well, the most adoring bisexual dork with a crush on his gang leader (boyfriend).

w and accel comfort characters for being my first riders and the best riders by far, no one else touches the three of them, how well they worked as a unit, how much shotaro and philip mean to me, how their love and power together conquered everything but especially shitty abusive family dynamics.

ooo and birth... i can take or leave ooo but BIRTH. BIG comfort. date and goto are amazing riders and their dynamic was so good.

fourze comfort character, love him, love that space boy. meteor... discomfort character actually.

wizard BIG discomfort, don’t like haruto. beast comfort tho, i love kosuke, i love how he saw danger as a challenge and wasn’t happy without it.

gaim and baron should be discomfort because of how much that show sucked but they are instead riding second to w in terms of comfort because kouta and kaito were great, great boys.

drive and mach comfort, shin and gou are amazing as a team and i adore them so much, but gou the most for being a well-written victim of abuse who didn’t take everything lying down and was messy and true in his reactions and his healing and everything he took onto himself.

ghost... can take or leave also. specter big comfort character tho because makoto was the best ghost boy by far, no one can beat him. his growth, his love for his sister, his willingness to die for his friends, how he went so far for everyone. what a good boy.

ex-aid... hhhh. let’s just not actually.

decade and diend are big comfort characters as well especially decade more than most others riding up there with kouta and kaito because tsukasa was just an impossibly good man even with his questionable personality.

kiva comfort character. wataru is such a good sweet loyal gentle-hearted boy who just wanted everyone in his life to be happy and who was put in an impossible situation because of his parents’ choices. ixa... who cares about otoya or nago they’re losers. but megumi and yuri comfort, and yuri biggest comfort, she was perfect in all ways.

“Hey, Tsukasa,” Yuusuke says. “Is that really a… giant Orange?”

“I’d say it looks more like a mandarin,” Tsukasa replies, calmly, that way he gets when he’s feeling more than one emotion and hiding them. “You were the one who knocked down the background in the middle of the night.”

Yuusuke laughs, awkwardly. Tsukasa has him there. But he’d woken up for a nightmare he thankfully can’t remember, and he didn’t want to bother the others, so he’d slipped out of bed and come downstairs, tripping on his way to get some water in the dark.

Tsukasa had turned the light on after the glow of the new backdrop faded, which…

“What are you doing down here?” Yuusuke questions. Tsukasa makes a noncommittal noise that is his version of a shrug.

“Didn’t feel the need,” he says, calmly. “You know how it is.”

“Do you get the feeling that this going to end very badly for us?” Kouta asked the other Riders, as he looked over his shoulder towards the two women who were at a separate table, laughing as they talked animatedly with each other.

Micchy, Touma, Rintaro and Kento sighed forlornly as they stared at their appropriately-themed fruit parfaits. They nodded, looking quite resigned to their fates, and Kouta followed suit, slumping into his seat with a groan.

Meanwhile, with the girls...

“Oh, those boys are being overdramatic again,” sighed Mai, shaking her head. “Honestly, I don’t know what’s going on in those heads of theirs half the time...”

Mei chuckled. “I can see that,” she says, eyeing Kouta’s outfit. “...He does know that he looks like a discount Jesus like that, right?”

“Discount Fruit Jesus, actually, but yes, he’s aware... and he still hasn’t done anything about it,” Mai responded with a soft laugh. She, in turn, eyed the author’s drop-crotch, cropped pants. “And him, did he really think that...?”

“I’ve tried getting rid of it, believe me. Unlike Kento, he wouldn’t let me set his horrible clothes on fire.” Mai sighed. “And Rintaro... honestly, it’s a shame he hides himself under all those layers,” she said.

“Kento...” Mai breathed. “He was the one that...” she trailed off. Mai’s breath caught in her throat. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to change the subject so abruptly, it’s just I kept hearing about it from Kouta...”

“Y-Yeah. He wasn’t... with us for a while.” Mai said shakily. 

Mai sighed. “It was the same with us, for Micchy,” she said sadly. “He... did some pretty terrible things. It took him a long time to understand that we forgave him for it a long time ago.”

“Same for Kento...” Mei nodded quietly. “He’s so stubborn... insisting that things had to be done his way... what an idiot.” she sighed wistfully, torn between affection and annoyance. 

“And then there was that awful coat of his... why he decided it was a good idea to be seen wearing that...”

Mai winced. “Yeah... I heard about that too. Is it really as terrible as they all say it is?”

Mei nodded solemnly. “But at least he let me get rid of it,” she said with a grin.

Mai laughed. “Smart man,” she said, and Mei giggled.

Over in the next table, the boys groaned as they reached for the tissues, haveing sneezed over and over in succession for the last few minutes.

“They’re talking about us aren’t they,” Micchy said, miserably sniffling.

“Most definitely,” Touma agreed with a pout. “And I doubt they talked about anything good.”

Riders feel their partners shyly reaching for their hand to hold it

Tsukasa: Probably too tsundere to do it lol

ShouPhil: The halfboiled egg tantei does it all the time, and tries to be subtle about it. Keyword being tries. Philip is endlessly amused by it

EiAn: They have the whole thing with reaching out for each other’s hands (I think it’s even said explicitly in Time Judged All) so they’re not even hiding the fact that it’s a common thing they do

Gentaro/Kengo: Honestly Gen seems to be a physically affectionate type, so he’s probs has no qualms grabbing Kengo’s hand out of nowhere. Kengo though, rarely initiates that when he does Gen may burst into tears

Haruto: Forever alone and is better for it or so he says

Gaim OT3: Micchy is the most reluctant of the three but whenever he does it the other two melt

Shinnosuke/Kiriko: They’re very subtle about any and all acts of PDA, but Kiriko tends to do it more and Shin immediately grips her hands in return

Takeru/Akari: I get the feeling that they’re the type of couple who will always hold hands under the table and everyone can tell and makes fun of them for it

Emu: The only things his hands hold on the regular are the first aid kit and a game controller

RyuSen: Let’s be clear about one thing... they’re not trying to hold each other’s hand. Yes, they’re that horny

Zi-OT3: Geiz is the most tsun-tsun about it, and therefore is the least subtle when the other two do it to him. Like he viscerally jumps in surprise lol

Aruto/Isamu: Isamu is forever possessive of his Aruto and would not hesitate to grab Aruto’s hands. Aruto is more shy about it so when he does it Isamu is a pretty happy and besotted boyfriend

BONUS: the bookstore OT4 (Touma/Rintaro/Kento/Mei)

Touma and Kento have the whole pinky promise thing so usually with them they actually prefer to lock pinkies over straight up handholding, even with Rintaro and Mei

Rintaro is confused by the gesture at first but when he realizes what it means he gets overly excited every time 

Mei just grabs whoever’s hand is free and swings it about :D

I actually forgot it was White Day today hehe. I did remember it was Pi Day but White Day completely slipped my mind for some reason

Tsukasa/Kaito: They bicker all day as per usual but in the end when they get home they exchange gifts in a tsuntsun manner

ShouPhil: Shoutaro is the only one who remembers and treats Philip to a romantic dinner, Philip makes up for it... in bed ;)))

EiAn: Eiji gets premium pantsu and ice cream from Ankh which is way more than he can hope for already

Gentaro/Kengo: Kengo is embarrassed by Gen's enthusiastic displays of affection for him but is very thankful anyway

Gaim OT3: Kouta and Mai spend the whole day romancing Micchy who is too embarrassed to show his face the next day

Shinnosuke/Kiriko: Shin convinces Emu to watch the kids so he and Kiriko can have a night to themselves.

Takeru/Akari: Takeru made sweets for Akari with Alain and Makoto's help (they made theirs for Kanon, Chloe and Alia)

RyuSen: Let's just say they were thankful Kazumin agreed to let the kids stay over with him else they be traumatized way too soon

Zi-OT3: The boys took the day off work to spend it with her, pampering her all day so she didn't even have to get out of bed

FuwAruto: They were so loey-dovey the whole day that everyone avoided Aruto's office like the plague

Bookstore OT4: The boys waited on Mei hand and foot, and Touma actually finished his manuscript BEFORE HIS DEADLINE.
