AND ANOTHER THING—
Tsumuri got to stop the battle. She was saved by someone she trusted, and she fought off being turned into a full goddess for other people’s use through the power of her conviction, and she STOPPED THE FIGHT. She got to end the series doing what she enjoyed but in a free and chosen way. We know less about her than Mai and she gets three times as satisfying a conclusion. Her abusers and tormentors are dead. She was designed to be a tool but what she wants to do is be a Navigator, to HELP people of the past find their wishes - she looks over the cards so happily bc from the beginning she wanted this too and couldn’t say it,
Mai loses everything. Far more than Kouta, she has these powers but can’t do anything with them but be a prize. She’s nothing, and she doesn’t get a say in the future she helps create. She’s also the main female lead and not the secondary female lead which makes it endlessly worse. Also it’s all way more romance coded with all three of the men directly around her, and her death/ascension isn’t even about her, it’s about Micchy.
Tsumuri is how you make a cursed god-woman of zero in universe agency. She’s so perfect.

Hikari Natsumi calls for the Girls Remix to be reactivated to give Beroba her divine retribution.
A/N: As @tokuteasings published their vent fic about Neon’s circumstance in Geats 29, here’s my vent fic. I would like to thank @narashikari @thehistorynut19 @tokuteasings for helping me brainstorm this idea.
credits to @asknarashikari as it was her prompt that gave me this idea.
credits to @flaim-ita because she helped me figure out how to introduce Kamen Rider Decade to Keiwa. I used and modified her answer to the anon ask she responded to, and yes, the anon was my cousin XD

"Sakura, could you call Narumi-san?" Yukimi called out to her daughter, who was studying by the waiting area.
"Do you want a case to be solved, mama?" Sakura questioned, curious why her mother was asking for a detective.
"Remember the celebrities you kids brought over a while ago?" Yukimi handed her phone to her daughter. "It seems like one of them is a Kamen Rider and I just received this video from someone I don't know."
"Eh, Neon-chan is?"
"What's wrong?" Ikki went out to the waiting area. "You want to speak with Terui-san's wife, Kaa-chan?"
"Ikki-nii, look at this."
Ikki and Sakura watched the video that was on their mother's phone. They're watching an artwork of a chibi woman announcing something about how one Kurama Neon was a product of the Goddess of Creation and how she replaced the deceased Kurama Akari.
"This reminds me of the time when we found out that Tou-chan has Giffu's cells." Ikki commented.
"This is very frustrating!" Sakura exclaimed.
"I'll call Terui-keiji and try to get his wife to come," Ikki volunteered. "I'm leaving this in your care, Sakura."
"Eh?"
"You can do this."
--------
"The Desire Grand Prix is a tournament for Kamen Riders in a bid to wish for their ideal world." A woman in pigtails narrated. "This is the fourth time where a tournament like this was held, the first one was with Kamen Rider Ryuki, The Second Time was with Kamen Rider Gaim, and the third time was with Kamen Rider Ex-Aid."
"Ryuki…" Sakura trailed off. "That seems familiar."
"Kamen Rider Ryuki – Kido Shinji, Kamen Rider Knight – Akiyama Ren, we met them sometime last year." Ikki called out from behind the wall.
"Eh, I don't remember." Sakura blurted out.
"Just don't mind it."
"I thought Kamen Riders are heroes?" Yukimi questioned as she processed the explanation the detective relayed.
"Not all Kamen Riders are heroes, Igarashi-san," Akiko shook her head.
"I also participated in the Desire Grand Prix once." Ikki contributed. "I know some of the Kamen Riders participating there."
"Eh? I don't remember that." Sakura looked at her brother in surprise.
"We met Kido-san and Akiyama-san during that Grand Prix." Ikki offered.
"Really?"
"Part of the Desire Grand Prix's operation is to erase the memories of everyone not involved in the Grand Prix but were caught in a crossfire."
"You won, didn't you, Ikki?" Yukimi looked at her son before she caressed her son's face.
Ikki nodded. "It's how I remember Vice."
"Since we're all involved with Kamen Riders, I don't think I will keep this a secret from you all," Akiko smiled. "I know why you called me here, Sakura-chan, it's about Neon-chan, isn't it?"
"How?"
"Apart from my reputable source, there's someone who takes pride in all-female Kamen Riders and she definitely did not like how Neon-chan was treated currently, she can't confront everyone involved on her own so she contacted everyone who she thought would best deal with the situation.
"Sakura!" Hana got inside the Igarashi's waiting area, out of breath, followed by an equally frazzled Daiji and Tamaki.
"You got a video about Neon-chan too?"
"If Hana-sama wants to help, I wa-"
"Let's leave this to them, Tamaki." Ikki swung his arms around the younger male.
"Sakura and the others can handle this." Daiji affirmed his brother's statement.
---------
Keiwa was sitting in his cell. Due to Ace's previous rampage, Michinaga postponed the third round of the game, which meant he stayed in the cell for the night.
He didn't know why, but Beroba and the others did not take his phone away, which meant he was also able to inform his sister that he won't be able to make it home for the night.
"Keiwa-kun, are you okay?"
"Eh? I-Igarashi-san?" Keiwa was surprised to see the other man outside his cell. "W-what are you doing here?"
"To get you out of here, of course."
"Y-you-"
"I don't know what Ace wrote on my desire card, but I didn't forget about the DGP."
"Neon-chan!"
"Don't worry about Neon-chan," Ikki smiled. "Now I need you to stand back for a bit."
Keiwa nodded as Ikki brandished a neon blue axe and pressed the Rex Vistamp on its stamp pad and hacked on the cell, cutting the cell's bars into pieces and created an opening for him to go through.
"We need to stay here until my sister arrives."
"Third Round of the Bullfighting Game starts." Beroba's voice could be heard in the room as a holographic screen graced Keiwa's and Ikki's presence. "Naa-go Vs. Rook. Fight!"
Neon was seen on the screen entering the battlefield and she was immediately attacked as soon as she stepped foot into the arena.
"Neon-chan."
Before Keiwa could even react two chains suddenly sprouted from the ground and restrained the attacking Jamato as the space behind Neon becomes distorted.
"So as we wait for Daiji and the others, here's a bento, my mom made it for you." Ikki handed Keiwa a bento, to which Keiwa bowed in gratitude.
"Thank you."
"Mom also insisted that we bring you a change of clothes." Ikki handed Keiwa a bag of clothes.
"You really didn't have to, getting me out of the cell was help enough."
"Don't mention it, mom wanted to be prepared in case things weren't favorable to you."
---------
"Chain Now."
"King Cobra."
"Queen Bee."
"Invincible Je-je-jeanne!"
"Aaaah – Aguilera!"
Blue and Orange streaks started attacking the restrained Jamato and none of them let up until the new Blue-Orange entity kicked the Jamato in the air.
A number of golden bees swarmed the Rook Jamato before it was blown away to a nearby wall from the explosion the swarm generated.
"Chain Now."
Another set of ice chains
"What's going on?!" Beroba demanded as the Jamato struggled to get up from the attack it just endured.
But a smirk appeared on the supporter's face.
Unbeknownst to the attackers, there was another enemy, it may have been discovered by Tycoon and Geats, but Beroba doubted that the latter was able to inform Naa-go about it.
Suddenly behind the Blue-Orange, Gold-Blue, and White-Orange attackers, another Jamato phased through the floor in an attempt to wound Neon as she stood behind her saviors.
"Not on my watch!" Another person, this time someone wearing brown with red accents with an orange helmet stepped in front of Neon and placed her hand on her belt.
"Barrier Now!"
An intricately-patterned barrier appeared in front of the warrior and defended both Neon and herself from the Jamato.
The Blue-Orange warrior used the dreadlocks on their helmet and bound the Jamato with it and threw it towards the other Jamato that they just defeated.
"Why yo-"
"Blizzard now." The warrior with the orange helmet froze the two Jamato together, rendering both immobile.
A zipper appeared above Michinaga and Daichi, as they were about to attack the invading force, released vines that bound both men in mid-air.
"Wha-" Beroba immediately retrieved her Laser Raise Riser but another tendril of vine stopped her from equipping her Laser Raise Riser with her Rise Cartridge." Jamato? How?!"
"These are not your Jamatos, these are Helheim's plants."
The grip the vines had on Beroba's hands tightened forcing her to drop her weapon and transformation trinkets as a woman in white with yellow hair descended from the open zipper the vines came from.
"Noroshi Muchuu!"
Smoke enveloped Neon and before anyone could react, she was suddenly in front of Beroba with another warrior wearing brown and gold armor.
"What are you going to do, Kurama Neon-chan?" Beroba taunted. "No, Kurama Akari Nigou-chan?"
A resounding slap echoed through the arena.
Beroba wasn't facing Neon anymore as the force of the slap forced her to look to the side.
"How dare you?" Neon's voice whimpered as she struggled to hold back her tears. "How dare you tell that story on Akari-chan's birthday, on my birthday!" She yelled.
"I live for the people's suffering, bleh." Beroba stuck out her tongue, proud of what she just said.
"Right, We're all just entertainment for you," Neon took a deep breath and turned her back on the woman responsible for everything that had gone wrong. "Berobaa-san."
"How da- How dare you call me that?!" Beroba's lost her composure as she struggled against her restraints. "You, you, you person! You were only created by the goddess's power!"
"The future must be full of dumb people, no offense to the other supporters." Neon continued her spiel ignoring the ballistic woman, struggling against the vines that restrained her.
"Do not ignore me you fake!" Beroba continued to struggle against her bonds.
"How come Neon-chan?" The blonde woman in white asked as she smiled at the youngest woman in the group as flicked her wrists and tightened her hold on the captives.
"If the time they came from is our future then that would mean that destroying our present would erase their time," Neon as she faced the three people in the Jamato faction. "That also means that you both are dumb Michinaga, Isuzu."
"Do not ignore memphfff"
Vines sprouted from Beroba's restraints and gagged the already-restrained woman leaving only aggressive sounds from her.
Michinaga clicked his tongue.
"I'm smarter than you'll ever be, spoilt fake princess." Daichi retorted
"My existence may be a fake, but I still made my life, what about you, Isuzu?" Neon smiled sweetly. "You never figured out that I was the Dezastar."
"What has got that outdated game have to do with this?"
"That you may think you're smart but you're actually dumb," Neon shrugged. "You know who did figure it out? It was the person who you framed in the very first round."
"No, that's impossible!"
"Unlike you, Keiwa observed and worked with every information he got," Neon smiled. "Which means he's a lot smarter than you."
"He got it wrong the first ti-."
"Sae-san was covering for me." Neon cut off Daichi's sentence. "That and he figured it out because he actually knew me, knew Ace and me for him to be confident in his deduction, which you wouldn't have figured out because all you got were superficial information.
"Are you telling me, friendship made him able to figure it out? Don't make me laugh!"
"I didn't really think someone dumb like you could ever understand."
"Du-"
Vines covered Daichi's mouth, muffling his next words.
"Who cares if it's your future, it's still free entertainment." Beroba giggled.
The woman in white raised an eyebrow at the remains of the vines that were used to gag her.
"Looks like I was right, you are indeed dumb, Berobaa-san." Neon smiled.
Beroba glared at Neon but she didn't explode as she did earlier.
"She has a point." The ethereal woman agreed as she chuckled at how humorously dull the woman was. "Well, maybe not as dumb as the scientist who wanted to destroy the universe without thinking that he'd be destroyed alongside it."
"Aah! That's right!" The Blue-Orange and White-Orange warriors pointed at each other as they figured out what Neon was talking about.
"Indeed," The Blue-Gold warrior nodded.
"This has gone on long enough." The brown warrior slammed the hilt of her sword onto each of the enemy's necks, knocking them unconscious.
Well except for one.
"Don't tell me."
"Yes, we are all Kamen Riders here." Everyone de-transformed out of their Rider suits and revealed their identities to everyone present, well revealed their physical appearance to everyone.
"Well not all of us," The ethereal woman chirped in.
"Eh, close enough, Mai-chan." Another woman walked out of the distorted space below. "You are Kouta-kun's equivalent after all and he's Kamen Rider Gaim."
"Why thank you, Natsumi-chan." The woman – Mai – expressed her gratitude for the praise.
"Tch." Michinaga clicked his tongue once more.
"Get this over with," He growled.
"There is still a chance, Michinaga." Neon offered.
Michinaga used all of his strength to roll his sleeve up and show everyone the moss and grass that grew on his hand.
"Whatever chance you're talking about, doesn't exist," Michinaga growled. "I only live solely to destroy every Kamen Rider."
"Good luck with that." The woman who just exited the distorted space before it fizzled out of existence laughed.
"I must agree."
"Tch."
----------
"Enjoying ourselves?"
The space in the hallway distorted and out came a man in Magenta followed by people in blue carrying guns.
"They're clever, installing a barrier to prevent anyone from entering." The man in pink hummed. "How you got here before us, Revi, is a mystery."
"I asked Natsumi-san the entrance to this place and waited for Neon-chan to get inside." Ikki informed." I timed my entrance with Neon-chan's so that I could get in."
"That's why Live mentioned you immediately ran off."
"Thank you for helping us save Keiwa, Kadoya."
"Think nothing of it, Revi." The man – Kadoya shook his head. "It was a favor from Natsumikan." He casually pointed at the woman who exited the distorted space on the screen.
"Mou nii-chan, you didn't have to rush here, we would have gotten here eventually."
"I know, but someone needed my help." Ikki rubbed the back of his neck.
"Well that's how you are nii-chan, I guess it couldn't be helped."
"There's still some time before the ladies will be done with Beroba, Nadge-Sparrow, and Buffa." Kadoya announced. "You can have your men do some routine check-ups on Tycoon, Live."
Daiji merely nodded before gesturing for one of his men to check on Keiwa.
"Ano, what did they mean about 'Good Luck' when Michinaga stated his sole reason to live?" Keiwa couldn't help but ask as he was ordered to remove his shirt, revealing some untreated bruises he got when he fought in the first round and lost to cheaters.
Kadoya scoffed as he watched the girls give Neon some comforting hugs on screen.
"The last time a Rider tried to kill all others was me," He gave wistful smile. "It took months, with far less of us."
Keiwa looked at Kadoya with a look of abject horror, inching slightly backward from the man in pink.
He then stared at Ikki, as if prompting the man to explain himself.
"He got better?" Ikki offered, still not sure of the stories he heard from the other Kamen Riders he had met, least of all Kadoya himself.
"Who are you?" Keiwa couldn't help but ask as he gulped saliva.
"Depends on what you want from me." Kadoya hummed as he snapped a photo of the rescued man's distressed state.
"A name would be nice."
The man looked Keiwa in the eyes.
"Kadoya Tsukasa," The man in magenta – Kadoya Tsukasa, said. "I'm just a passing through Kamen Rider… and destroyer of worlds."
Keiwa could only gulp as he realized how much of a folly Michinaga's wish was.
"Don't worry about it, like nii-chan said, he got better." Daiji offered, even when he shared his brother's feelings about Kadoya.
----------
Natsumi, Akiko, Mai, Mayu, Yaiba, Reika, Sakura, Hana, and Neon were at the lounge area of the Igarashi's bath house, enjoying their time together. They were wearing the bathhouse's yukatas and drinking milk.
"You know had Natsumi-san not contacted me, I wouldn't have known that there's another Rider Battle tournament going on." Mai, who now has black hair and is dressed in a simple shirt and blue hoodie, stated. "Even if I don't really consider what happened in Zawame as a Rider Battle."
"So, Kamen Rider…" Neon trailed off. "They have always existed?"
"Since the 70s," Natsumi answered. "At least in this world."
"In this world?" Sakura asked.
"Parallel Worlds," Akiko offered. "Not that my source really knows a lot about it, every time we are presented with options there is a world where we chose the other option."
"That makes sense, the Gaia Library wouldn't have that much information about other worlds."
"Gaia library?" Reika questioned. "Is that like the libraries we have at the Sword of Logos?"
"Close," Natsumi answered. "However I won't be saying much, people would kill for access to that information."
"Understandable." Reika nodded.
"So there is a world where I was sacrificed for Giff." Hana hummed to herself.
"Or a world where I became like my nee-san." Mayu stated off-handedly.
"I find that not thinking of our parallel selves is beneficial for all of us," Akiko offered. "After all we are living our lives in the present."
"That's why you don't have to pay attention to the words of the people in the future," Natsumi looked Neon in the eyes. "No matter what they say, you are a Kamen Rider, you deserve to be one."
"You've visited that time period, haven't you, Natsumi-san?"
"Yes and it wasn't pretty," Natsumi shook her head. "I would even say it's worse than the world where Sougo-kun was Ohma Zi-O" He sighed. "The reason I was even aware of what was happening in the first place was that I was there when Beroba made the announcement."
"That bad, huh?" Akiko commented.
"Sougo-kun… You mean Tsukuyomi-san's friend?" Sakura asked.
"It's better if we don't think that far away, ourselves," Yukimi stated. "We just focus on the now and live our lives in the present."
"Are you a Kamen Rider too, Igarashi-san?" Neon couldn't help but ask the mother of the group.
"No, I am a proud wife and mother of Kamen Riders, and that's enough for me."
"Don't let her fool you!" Sakura responded almost immediately. "Mama is strong!"
Everyone just laughed at the outburst.
As everyone continued to enjoy their time Kyuun was outside the Igarashi bathhouse, eavesdropping on the conversation that happened as he looked at his Laser Raise Riser before walking away.

people want catharsis eh?
A zipper appeared above Beroba. It opened and released a number of vines restraining and gagging her and her two Kamen Riders.
"Saa, Neon-cham." A woman in white with blond hair appeared behind Neon. "You can do whatever you want to her."
Neon nods as she walks up to all three of them and slaps them on each cheek.
Honestly, Mai should've whacked them around a bit more but other than that, *chef's kiss*
Berobaa-san wouldn't know what hit her

Pffft just imagine Micchy and Takatora, and Oren looking at Kouta and Mai with a kid (read: Yuzuru, it ended becoming a joint custody with the Wizard and Mage rider and allies, his parents and Kouta and Mai)...
"Ara, did Monseiur Fruit Salad and Madamoiselle Apple procreate?"
"Please do not answer his question" Takatora's tone was so done.
Micchy's eyes are just wide like saucers.
Tumblr media
"Please do not mistake me as their child." Yuzuru had to explain to them first, his face polite but deadpan. He was most likely used to people mistaking people as his parents. Nitoh has been mistaken as Yuzuru's elder brother thankfully. Yamamoto and his wife were the most mistaken as Yuzuru's parents and that's fine.
One time Rinko was mistaken as his mom and Yuzuru almost wanted to jump off of a cliff-
"Yeah uh, he's just a friend. We're watching over him the wizards and mages." Kouta explains as Yuzuru shrugs his shoulders nonchalantly, not giving a single flying fuck. The kid is just too tired for this shit anyway.
"Well.." Mai begins to say, "I mean we are here to show him around. Do you all mind?" "of course! I would be happy to!" Oren goes to pat Yuzuru on the head and though the young boy does take it, there is this age to him that is wise beyond his years.
No one knows where the hell Yuzuru's sass came from but they all assume it's frustration of dealing with Nitoh all the time.

kouta, micchy, and mai, anything of your choice! i'd prefer it not being tooth rotting fluff, though.
interesting ship you've got there, anon. i'm not sure if this could please you, since gaim would give you enough angst as is, but have some domestic arguments. i hope you don't mind that this is post-canon!
Usually, Mitsuzane enjoys waking up to a peaceful house on weekends. Today, it doesn’t seem to be the case.
He’d woken up late, as is normal for weekends — because Kouta and Mai had insisted that he get some kind of rest, and the weekdays at Yggdrasill couldn’t permit such — but to the sound of clamor and unrest. Sure, it hadn’t been anything as bad as the aggravated phone calls that occurred between Nii-san and Ryoma-san some days, or the impassioned yet futile arguments he’d have with Mai during darker times, but any kind of raised volume sends a little shiver down his spine, even in adulthood.
Thankfully, upon approaching the closed door of their joint bedroom, the argument doesn’t seem to be one of genuine concern, and rather one of fear for something trivial.
“I’m telling you, Mai, someone’s got to take care of the stupid little thing, and I’m not going to!”
“Well, I’m not going to, either!”
“Great! So we’re stuck!”
“Why don’t you be a big boy and just squish it? You’re a Rider, you’ve taken care of rogue Inves before. And trust me, I’ll freeze over Helheim before you even think of waking up Micchy.”
A mention of name, Ryoma-san had once said, is but an invitation to barge into a conversation even if the mentioned is unwanted. Sure, the bastard had uttered a lot of evil, and taken most of it to his grave, but Mitsuzane finds himself opening the door to let himself into the living room regardless.
“Wake me up for what?”
Kouta and Mai's eyes fling towards him, seemingly as if they'd set off a curse of the greatest magnitude, before Mai follows up with giving Kouta's head a loud smack.
“See what you’ve done? You woke him up! Oh, Micchy, I’m so sorry, you should get back to sleep.”
“It’s not that big of a deal, Mai. You guys needed me for something?”
Kouta directs his attention towards the corner opposite the one he’s holed himself into with Mai, the arm that's not rubbing his head quivering alongside the unadulterated fear carried by his face.
“Spider.”
Mitsuzane drags his eyes alongside Kouta’s outstretched arm, then beyond it towards the hardwood floor on the corner. Sure enough, as Kouta had stated, a spider stands inertly on the floor, seeming to do no catastrophic harm.
Weirdly, Mitsuzane had figured that Kouta had grown into a man without fear after everything he’s been through, especially to a vessel containing life. But as with most things he’d thought of as a sixteen year old, he’d been wrong. To Kouta and Mai, while he walks over to the spider and crouches, he raises his eyebrows in confusion over their fear. To the spider, he simply waves.
“Hi there.”
Kouta shrieks once more, this time in discontentment.
“You’re talking to it?! Get it out of here!”
In response, Mitsuzane simply glares at Kouta before shrugging his shoulders at the spider. He’d started a conversation simply to be polite, even if he figures the probabilities of the spider understanding the Japanese language is abysmally low, but he figures he can drag it out, just to get on Kouta’s nerves for waking him up.
“You’ll have to excuse Kouta, he’s a little scared of your kind. You’d think he’d love you without being scared, given that both he and Mai are gods, but let’s not get into that. I’m here to take you somewhere safer.”
Nii-san’s voice enters his head when he glances at the sun, from the one time a spider had graced their house with his presence — something about making sure the spider could actually survive the conditions outside before setting it off into the world. The spider crawling onto his cupped hands, however, seems like every other spider he’s ever seen.
Well, shit. He’s no spider expert. But who is he if he doesn’t make use of the Man and Woman of the Beginning he calls his partners?
“Hey, Mai, is this spider native to around here?”
“Yeah, it is. Why does that matter, though?”
The spider roams around in the general vicinity of his palms with no worries while Mitsuzane walks towards and opens the main door of the house, carrying said carefree mannerisms as he places his hands down for the spider to seize the day in the great outdoors.
“There you go. See you around.”
The door slams shut in between the spider scurrying off and himself, and he dusts his hands as he heads to the bathroom. In the meantime, Kouta and Mai slowly step out of their corner, and it's now that Mitsuzane decides that putting them to work as a little bit of gratitude could get this weekend back on the right path.
Step one to doing that would involve smiling sweetly, just a tad bit too saccharine, to warn them.
“You guys better make me a good breakfast if you woke me up for that.”

“Why are they always sending you-” Itaru paused his shooting exercise in the outer Kishi courtyard to look at Fuma Kodaka strutting towards him.
“You truly never learned to keep your mouth shut.”
“Sir.” Itaru rectified, correcting his posture to be at ease, unstringing the bow.
“Both Hojo brothers sent for you.”
“Sir?” confusion was being faked; he knew exactly what this was about: a way out. After all these years- He didn’t know if he should rejoice or dread it all, right now it leaned more towards the latter.
“As if they’d tell me what this is about. Just follow.” Fuma walked back the way he came, Itaru in toe, disarmed.
“They do consider you most highly.”
But at that Fuma laughed: “Maybe they’re just cautious of you-”
Fuma Kodaka was a dog, Hojo’s dog more importantly and a brigand with status because he just had to be one to understand how to be a brigand handler. And Fuma Kodaka was exceptional. In their ongoing aggression with the Takeda, it was him and his guerillas that finally managed to break through their military camps and halt advancements. The work should disgust any self-respecting samurai - which is why none of them did it. Unless you were Itaru. He didn’t even know at this point if they enjoyed the embarrassment Itaru should be feeling as a Takatsukasa sent to do a brigands work or they were just hoping to get rid of him in a more elegant fashion, or they were simply trying to make another Fuma Kodaka out of him. They should have had more in common, which is why Itaru just couldn’t bring himself to disliking the man as much as he should have.
“It’s good to be someone worthy of caution though.” Fuma continued and Itaru perked up as if it was praise. “They just give you the resources to survive anything.”
“A weed.”
“Precisely.”
He never truly trusted Kodaka, not until now, on this walk through Kishi’s freshly maintained gardens, climbing slowly on the man-made hill towards the inner keep. And he couldn’t say what compelled that man to show sympathy at a time like this. Perhaps being called in by both Hojo brothers put unease in Fuma’s heart as well. Perhaps indeed they had quite a bit in common and he should have been mentored by this man instead of Hojo Ujinobu. Always stuck on the maybe-
The floorboards creaked underneath their footsteps as they approached the small council room on the second floor. The air inside was dense, stuffy, the autumn rains having left the wooden outer walls humid. It smelled like a dead forest. Fuma stopped by the screen leading to the council room.
Itaru courteously bowed before sliding himself inside and at the second step settling himself down, committing to another bow, this time onto the floor, placing the unstrung bow before his knees.
“Takatsukasa.” Ujitada boomed; he had a strong, full-bodied voice. “Do you know why we might have called you here?”
“No.” Itaru replied flatly.
The brothers shared a look, then Ujinobu awkwardly shifted in his spot as if his own weight was uncomfortable on his feet. Unjinobu then cleared his throat:
“Takatsukasa Itaru, we have received a letter from your father requesting you to return to your hometown of Kose most urgently on the unfortunate occasion of your mother’s passing.”
Jaw trembled and hands clenched tightly onto the fabric of his hakama, teeth soon followed, grinding on each other. He must have grimaced as both brothers now looked at each other again, more uncomfortable this time around, but for Itaru the environment outside a very narrow circle threatened to dissolve into nothingness.
“We’ve…” another clearing of the throat from Ujinobu.
“We have discussed for a while now,” Ujitada’s voice brought the world back into focus again, a narrow corridor guided by that astute voice. “We have decided you are well within your right to attend your mother’s funeral and you may leave Jōshōto as soon as you’d like. We strongly agree Ujinobu should accompany you, but that is between you and your mentor.”
Itaru found wits enough to bow deeply again: “Thank you.”
His hands were now trembling as he tried to continue: “I’d like to go alone if that is allowed of me…” Voice betrayed him in the most human of ways.
Did she really die? Did he kill her for this!?...
Distress must have been noted as they dismissed him with the permission to go alone. And Itaru scrambled to his feet and onto the corridor in a manner that felt drunken, even ignoring Fuma Kodaka still standing by the door. He had to leave right away, heart drummed in his chest in a way it hasn’t for a very long time.
Did he really not get a chance to say goodbye to his mother yet again?
The weather was cold, dank, the wind was mild, yet managed to nip at all exposed skin. He decided to wear no courtly clothing back to his home town – he’d be returning the same way he left: an archer’s outfit, on the same horse.
Shinkuro and Sakuhiro barely got wind of Itaru leaving the capital and their impatience at that news surely drew suspicion but Itaru found both of them, barely prepared, to bid him farewell. Shinkuro had his own horse too. He wanted to scold him, scold them both. It wasn’t just the marriage; it was a funeral as well.
Thin, meager rain pitter-pattered on their clothes and Itaru didn’t manage to say anything aside of a thank you to Sakuhiro who offered him an exquisite fur-lined, embroidered, Ming-made coat together with a black fur winter eboshi to keep him warm on his journey and as an engagement present. He could have sworn the man reassured Itaru that they’d be meeting again soon, on a much happier occasion, but that still left Itaru cold. He was very cold…
The journey was completely quiet, if he’d have galloped harder, he might have left off the impression that he was truly desperate. The landscape around him mirrored his thoughts however: empty, devoid of life or activity as the trees had already gone barren and the land had already been plowed for the upcoming winter, so the peasants would all just be huddled inside. Everything was deserted, not that he would have cared if the surroundings were any less depressing. Itaru only looked at the ground before the horse’s hooves.
He rode into Kose more ardently, the mud road having turned into cobbled streets. The rain fell only harder as Itaru turned on the road nestled at the base of the hills, north, towards the samurai and officials’ quarters. The guard at the estate’s entrance recognized him by the glasses and he was left in without a single word. He didn’t even know if Shinkuro was still following.
Itaru dismounted - his head in a frenzy. He barely remembered asking where his father was. Study. The door slid open and a drenched Itaru slumped to the floor, a deep bow, but his words came insolent in contrast to his reverential posture:
“Father, is it true that mother died?”
“Unfortunately so-…” His father put his brush down; he must have been practicing his calligraphy.
The footsteps that came in to interrupt the heavy silence that drew ever nearer to father and son sounded hurried. Small distance – the person was wearing a full-length kimono. And Shinkuro’s steps, light and careful. Itaru still found himself in the bow, head pressed to the floorboards, face heating up from the tears that threatened to spill.
It creaked when his father got up to pass him by:
“You should have a change of clothes. We’ll go see the grave tomorrow.”
The grave?...
Itaru’s head shot just in time to see his father walking away, down the hallway towards where he remembered the family shrine would have been. He could barely register his own feelings, outside of the frantic beating of his own heart. The sounds surrounding him felt all muffled, yet Shinkuro’s footsteps were unmistakable even so.
I’m sorry.
Itaru almost dared to swat him away, but there was no need for it, the man moved away on his own. He only caught a glimpse of the bewilderment on his face.
Young master Itaru, let me help you change your clothes. Something comfortable, for dinner. I’ll warm it on the stove for you. Would you like the girls to make you a bath?

Note
everyone is talking about Neon, Time Fire and whatnot, while I'm here making Takatsukasa Mai jokes with Keiwa [in that Micchy has kidnapped his own Mai in the form of Keiwa Sakurai]
does this happen in this week's ep?? that's so funny i love it... keiwa is really becoming heroine-coded. and maybe some more food finally for the keiwa/michinaga contingent? not really an interest of mine but i'd like to see them have a substantial interaction again as well.

you and me burning up the night (like a tide to the shore, i'm always back for more)
Fandom: Kamen Rider Gaim Characters: Kazuraba Kouta, Kumon Kaito, Takatsukasa Mai Song: "You and I," Johnnyswim (playlist here)
The sky cracks and rumbles, and the child, too young to be anything but a child yet, burrows deep into bed and says, “When will the thunder stop?”
The mother runs long fingers through their child’s hair, the only thing visible above the blankets. “Soon enough, precious. It won’t hurt you. The gods are just arguing, that’s all.”
Wide eyes become visible as the blanket lowers slightly. “Why are they arguing? What are they arguing about?”
Another crack of thunder, and the mother glances out at the driving rain and decides that yes, after all, this is a good time for a story. “Well, precious, long, long ago, before the first two gods planted the first tree and poured all of their color into the world, they lived in the heavens, doing celestial dances, and with them lived their beloved, who was a great warrior.”
---
It's pouring rain, and Kouta and Mai are both soaked to the skin, but Kaito’s clothes are pristine and dry. He’s glowing, in fact, surrounded by a moonlit corona of steam as raindrops near him evaporate, and the steam-light washes out his features until all they can really see of his face are the glowing red embers of his eyes.
Kouta, water dripping into his eyes, is shouting. “Why are you so stubborn, Kaito?”
“Oh, me? I’m the stubborn one?” Kaito flings his arm out to the side, and the steam corona follows it, as he points to the blackened stump which was the genesis of their current argument. “Am I the one throwing a tantrum over the loss of a single tree?”
Lightning splits the air above Kouta’s head. “I liked that tree!”
“You like every tree, Kazuraba, I don’t see how that signifies.”
Mai groans in frustration and is echoed by the creaking of the tree in which she’s perched. “Why are you two always like this? It’s been five hundred years!”
---
“When war broke out in the heavens, their beloved became arrogant and power-hungry and schemed against them, and in the end the First Man was forced to strike him down. But they mourned him so fiercely that when they made the world, they brought his body there and laid it to rest under the First Tree. There he lay for days and days, for weeks and weeks, for months and months, for a year and a day, while his spirit wandered the heavens. And then the First Storm came, and it struck the First Tree, and he was reborn with an ember where his heart had been, because the world needed fire.”
The child nods slowly. “Why did we need fire?”
The mother smiles. “The first gods can only grow; they can’t bear to destroy because it hurts them so badly. Sometimes when things go bad they have to be burnt. You remember when Rikka’s family’s house nearly died? And they had to rip the vines out at the roots and burn them so that the tree could continue to grow? That’s what fire is for, and that’s what their beloved brought them. He can destroy what needs to be destroyed, and it doesn’t cause him pain.”
There’s a particularly loud crack of thunder, somewhere very near them, and the child squeaks and dives under blankets again. “But it hurts them. Doesn’t he love them?”
---
“Kaito, you know we love you, but—”
“Right, yes, you love me.” Kaito rips his shirt open, the scar cutting across his chest black as tar in the moonlight. The wind rattles the branches of the trees; the rain is very nearly falling sideways. “What a lover’s token you gave me when you killed me. And you complain about me hurting you.”
Kouta’s golden eye flares. “Don’t bring Zawame into this, that was centuries ago and a completely different situation.”
“It’s all one and the same, Kazuraba.” Kaito scowls and, just for a moment, the air cools around him enough for a single drop of rain to strike his face and then evaporate. “No matter where we go and how many centuries pass, you will always be the man who killed me, and I’m always doomed to be something that causes you pain.”
Another lightning strike far distant, another rumble, and then Kouta lifts a hand for a moment and lets it fall again, looking forlorn. Mai leans down from her tree branch. “Kaito, why did you take down that tree?”
---
“He loves them very much, precious, and they love him, but fire always burns. It can’t help it. And just because something hurts doesn’t mean it’s bad. It hurts to clean a cut, doesn’t it?”
---
“It was unfit. It had an incurable fungal infection that would have spread to the other trees around it, and from there to the other plants. It would have destroyed half the forest in this area if I hadn’t burned it.”
“See, Kouta? I know it hurt you, I felt it just as badly, but Kaito doesn’t just do these things to be mean to you.”
---
The wind abates, and the next rumble of thunder is very far off. The blankets lower enough to expose the child’s whole face. “Are they done fighting?”
The mother shrugs, smiling. “I’m sure they’re just finishing up now. They always make up eventually. Even the gods can’t be angry at each other forever.”
Sometimes it does take a while, though, they think as they tuck the child back in. Hopefully we won’t see a solid month of storms again for at least another ten years.
---
Mai descends from her tree on delicate steps of woven vine, shaking water from her gown and skin and hair to stand pristine and dry in the still-falling rain. “So are you two going to kiss and make up now or what? I swear. At least neither of you threw the other one halfway across the continent this time.”
Kaito rolls his eyes. “As if you’ve never yelled at me before. Or at him, for that matter.”
She turns bright red. “Wh—that’s. That’s beside the point. I demand that you kiss and make up.”
Kouta glances at her, grinning, and then vines lift him from the ground and bring him over so that he can look Kaito in the eye properly. “All right, if you want. Kaito, I’m sorry I started yelling at you before asking you why you were doing something.”
Kaito allows his cheek to be kissed as his steam corona dissipates, arms crossed over his chest. “Your apology is accepted, Kazuraba.”
“Kaito!” Mai squints at him. “Call him by his name,it’s been five hundred years. And you need to apologize too.”
A heavy sigh. “Yes, Mai. Your apology is accepted, Kouta. And I apologize for taking the tree down without warning you beforehand.”
“And the kissing.”
Kouta accepts his kiss with more amusement than tolerance. “Apology accepted, Kaito.”
Mai beams at them. “Good! And now you can both kiss me.”
---
Drowsing, the child mumbles, “If really big storms are the gods fighting, then why do they make all the flowers bloom afterward?”
---
They glance at each other and lean forward to kiss Mai simultaneously.
---
The mother coughs. “I’ll tell you that story when you’re older.”

Note
since this year is the 10th anniv of Gaim...
Gaim cast react to someone giving Micchy a hard time or hearing this.
Person A: THat's him! That's the Armored Rider that allied with the monsters!
Person B: Of course, he's a Kureshima
Person B: Figures he gets off scot-free
Person C: He prolly thinks he can mooch off of his brothers supposed efforts to rehabilitate Zawame City.
Person A: Does anyone have the number of that Bravo guy?
Person A: I heard he can dispose of the unwanted.
Kouta shows up in all his Fruit Jesus glory and... very politely asks them to recant their statements, lest he lose his temper and show them the full extent of his space god powers. Also there is a very restrained Mai and a livid Takatora, who's only being held back from punching someone by Micchy himself. The other Beat Riders back Micchy up, defending him from the assholes even when he admits that they're right about him.
Then there's Oren, who makes it quite known that he does not enjoy beating up young people who are still beating themselves up for mistakes from a decade ago... but he's more than happy to take on a bunch of punks who talk like they knew shit about anything the Riders went through.
