I had timed it perfectly, as always. The washing machine dinged at 6:55pm, toothbrushing o'clock. The only problem is, my husband heard it too. "I'll do the washing today," Jon offered, in his most "helpful" voice. Panic set in. He and I both knew I'd never admit that I had deliberately timed the washing so that he would have to get the children ready for bed. We never, ever say that out loud. Then I heard the for once magical sound of whining. "NOOOOOOOOO! I WANT DADDDDYYYYY TO DO MY TEEEEEEEEEEETTTHHH!" I leapt up. "Aw, I'll hang up the washing. He wants you," I smiled, matching Jon's helpful voice. "No problem," he lied, looking me square in the eyes. I love that liar.
