hey so not too long ago, i saw a post from rz twitter that said that during the first loop where subaru meets otto, when subaru met the witch cultists and were chanting something to subaru before they left, that these cultists left because some outsider (who's therefore an enemy to their witch and its prophecy) was nearby. And the tweet said how that "nearby outsider" was actually otto who stayed behind because he was worried that subaru, (whom he met only as a customer in that loop and otto had already fulfilled his job) would succumb to danger. And despite frufoo's warnings, it's heavily implied that otto had in fact died in that loop waiting for subaru to come back. And the replies were saying that it's common knowledge?

First of all, is that true? I can see how one would come to the conclusion that the cultists left because otto, an outsider, was nearby. But i haven't seen proof of the implication that otto died from that loop. Secondly, with this perhaps being true, does that confirm that any loop in which otto was nearby and subaru is in danger, that otto risked his life for him? Some ppl say "but the whale incident!" But like you said way earlier, otto came back to him after pushing him off, and it's implied that he died trying to save subaru. There's no loop i can recall otto leaving him to the dust, even when he doesn't know who subaru is. And thirdly, Otto get some self-preservation skills, you barely knew the guy and already risk your life for him. What the fuck.

HAH anon your ask intrigued me so much i immediately went to the anime to try and confirm this. and bc the anime is the closest bit of info i got wjdndn i dont have arc 3 ln or access to arc 3 wn (i do not understand japanese either, sadly) but!! while the anime doesnt explicitly confirm otto died in that first loop his character debuted in, i think its definitely a possibility that he died to the witch cult there. (if anyone knows the lore on this for sure though feel free to add?? yeah)

also regarding about whether this is common knowledge or not—id argue its kind of not, at least in certain circles, bc im gonna be completely real i had to double check the anime to see how well i remembered it bc its 1. been a while since i’ve watched season 1 in full and 2. when i was looking at it on my first watch i was focused more so on what the hell was happening to subaru, rem, emilia camp rather than otto, who at the time seems like just some random guy who wont appear ever again. but also maybe im a little too used to people misinterpreting rezero over on reddit ajfbdnd bc some people STILL completely forget that otto went back after pushing subaru off the wagon. and some people still forget ottos died for subaru even though its super obvious in arc 4?? so i dont think ottos involvement with subaru across loops is really common knowledge? or at the very least its not common for Certain portions of the rezero fandom bc i see ottos whole fixation on subaru gets glossed over at times. but i do genuinely think moments like the first loop with otto are probably easy to sort of miss if youre not paying attention. but also again i might be a little bit brainwashed by rezero redditors misreading things bc the amount of people that forget otto went back for subaru in the white whale loop made me doubt my own memory of that scene to the point where i rewatched it in the anime just to be sure wkdndnd. i dont really see any english rezero people talk about this loop in particular too unless theyre referring to you know, rem arlam and emilia camp dying. but anyway moving on for now…

alright!! lets go over this scene i suppose. the anime doesnt go into like. Specifics, like how the tweets you mention do anon, but it does have some interesting stuff.

in the anime, the first loop with otto happens in episode 14 to about the beginning of 15, but the focus is of course more so on subaru, rem, arlam, etc, bc rem left for the mansion and subarus trying to get there quickly so he pays otto to do that. otto takes the time to warn him before they even set off, not only for his own sake but also for subarus:

but you know, bc ottos desperate for money bc hes in debt, he takes up the job. but once otto and subaru actually get to the road leading up to arlam and the mansion, otto stops bc frufoo’s frightened and shes warning them of danger—

but subaru being subaru jumps off anyway and leaves. he says this quickly before he goes:

otto replies by trying to call out to him desperately as he runs away:

your point about ottos self preservation is super interesting anon because otto DOES have self preservation skills. he almost kind of prides himself on it, sometimes—as a merchant, especially from a merchant family, hes been raised to treasure it. to go for things that work in his favor. especially with his bad luck fucking him over too. and he can be slightly morally ambiguous at times, so he is Very aware of self preservation and staying out of trouble. but at the same time, leaving behind innocents does kind of weigh on him bc. well hes still human. that and the further into rezero you get, the more clear it is that ottos self preservation skills just get thrown out the window the moment he sees subaru. like otto takes a significant amount of time on screen to complain about danger or trouble hes found himself in, or go on and on about how the moment he sees danger, hes just gonna turn around and run—but its just COMPLETE AND TOTAL BULLSHIT SOMETIMES. he has plenty of chances Every Time to turn around and run and the moment subaru enters the picture, he doesnt take it. the only exception to this was him leaving subaru in greed if, but thats because he saw that subaru didnt give a shit about him and even then. he made that choice FOR subaru’s sake too, bc he recognizes that greed if subaru is just gonna micromanage everything and deal with it on his own. otto knows he’d just be another burden to subaru, so he leaves to lessen the load.

main route otto though? yeah youre absolutely right his self preservation is way beyond dead at this point. his self preservation is absolutely gone when it comes to subaru. this first loop is an example of it—while of course ottos you know treating subaru like a stranger bc thats what they are, he goes out of his way to warn subaru repeatedly. at first it looks like its mostly just for his own benefit bc hes Also in danger here, but then he says that he cant just accept taking subarus money and items. he talked about how hed accept subarus payment just a few minutes before this?? and we know in retrospect that he desperately NEEDS money bc hes in debt??? and subarus giving him an out right now to just leave and not look back but he still hesitates and frantically tries calling after subaru??? he has EVERYTHING to gain from just taking the money and subarus things and just leaving, but we dont actually see him leave on screen.

and then right after this, we cut to subaru running to arlam. of course, the witch cult stops him, and in the anime, all they do is circle him, then bow (to foreshadow how the witch cult + petelgeuse think that hes one of them, im assuming), and then they disappear without saying a single word.

its interesting to note though that when they leave, they run towards the direction subaru just came from. which is where otto was.

and then subaru keeps continuing on to arlam and the mansion where he finds out that the witch cult Basically wiped everyone out there. episode 15 continues this loop and then quickly ends it bc subaru is having a mental breakdown finding everyones corpses and then he promptly proceeds to die to puck (iirc?) inside the mansion. and thats all the details the anime gives about the ending of this loop. so no clear hint like the white whale loop that otto Died from this, but i think the implication is definitely there if you choose to read into it. (again, im not sure if the ln adds more details to this or not, but iirc the anime doesnt touch on this much.)

its strange that the witch cultists that find subaru just. up and leave in the direction where we Know otto likely is, bc 1. the cultists move Fast and 2. only a couple minutes passed at most, so its likely that otto is Still There, even if he did start trying to leave. even then though, i think its in character for him to still be there and try to wait for subaru. or, at the very least, otto waited there debating with himself on whether he should just leave or not. waiting there satisfies both his self preservation and the guilt he’d feel if he just abandoned subaru—he doesnt go any further to minimize the danger to himself and frufoo, but he doesnt completely leave just in case subaru comes back or if otto decides to move forward and check on subaru or something. but then we see subaru find everyone at arlam and the mansion dead, and we the audience know the surviving witch cultists left in the opposite direction (where otto is) after killing everyone at arlam, so—i think theres a connection there. as in: yeah. if otto was still there, hes probably dead.

additionally, of course later in arc 3 we see that otto gets captured by the witch cult. this time he was captured bc the witch cult caught him hurrying to get to another location for its job offer, so the witch cult captured him to interrogate him on what exactly he was doing iirc?? so in that sense yeah he was caught by the witch cult for being an outsider getting into witch cult territory while they were in the middle of doing shit (and he likely wouldve been killed if ricardo and the others hadnt rescued him) o.O

but yeah thats all the animes got regarding the first loop (aka ottos official debut into the main story as well)!!!

“There's no loop i can recall otto leaving him to the dust, even when he doesn't know who subaru is." also anon youre so right for saying this bc. yeah i cant recall any loops either bc every time otto is there near subaru. hes risking his life for subaru. hes so incredibly ride or die that its concerning. it kind of boggles my mind that some people overfixate on how he pushed subaru out of the wagon in the white whale loop and YEAH that was fucked up, but not only does he feel bad and die trying to go back for subaru later, but when you watch that scene in the anime and think about it from ottos perspective. yeah some guy you just fucking met is yelling at you about how you apparently forgot about some person youve never heard of in your life, hes yelling at you to go back and TOWARDS THE WHITE WHALE when all youre trying to do is save both of your asses, he starts trying to wrestle with you while youre both being hunted down by the whale, and then he starts rambling to himself about how maybe its his fault the white whale is chasing after both of you while you keep hearing the white whales deranged thoughts in your head the whole time bc of your dp??? its a miracle otto didnt push subaru out of that damn wagon sooner and its a miracle otto even decided to go back for subaru after all that T^TT any person in ottos shoes would be RUSHING to push subaru out of that wagon.

but like. once you think about it - yeah Every Time in the main route that ottos been near subaru and theyve gotten into danger? otto actively puts himself at risk for subarus sake. and he doesnt always die or get hurt for it, but we know that he ALWAYS goes out of his way to help subaru. hes been like this since his debut in arc 3, practically, regardless of whether or not he actually died there. bc he still Lingered around and tried to warn subaru not to leave.

so what im saying is that so much of ottos screentime is spent helping subaru in some way.

Ah! you finally arrived to your apartment complex. It was a pretty decent place, very calm and quiet. You were the youngest resident of the apartments, everyone else was an elder person which lucky for you, they were all very kind ppl, a very nice community that helped each other out, like a big family.

You’ve been living here for a couple of months now, hmm around 3 to 4 perhaps? you cant really remember with all the tasks you have as the only person in your home. Anyways… you’ve noticed a few weeks ago… the new resident who moved in… he was pretty handsome.

He was a young fella’ had a balache hair from black to different tones of green at the tips, his skin was a greyish pale with a few black spots that looked like birthmarks that decorated his body, his body type… skinny but fairly muscular.. hm… he was very eye catching to say the least, he was… unique.

Focus Y/N! You pat your cheeks snapping back to reality. You hop off your car heading to the trunk to grab some groceries you’ve made… gosh y/n good luck carrying all that to the second floor of your apartment.

“Do you need some help?…”

You flinch as you quickly turn around to face the source of the voice, gosh it was him! You stare at him from head to toe to fully picture him, he was wearing a tank top which was cropped right below his pecs which showed off his skinny athletic body, he had bandages all around his arms and a few patches on his face. You didn’t wanted to seem rude and ask about said injury signs so you bit your tongue to hold it back.

“Not at all! My name’s L/N Y/N! Im so pleased to meet you Mr. Shabana” you said as you open the door of your apartment stepping inside. You look back at the entrance waving Gyutaro to enter, what a nice boy… You quickly guide him to your kitchen so he can out them down. “Thank you so much Mr. Shabana… you really saved me from the struggle hah!”

Gyutaro looked around your place inspecting every inch of it “Oh- Uh yeah- alright, no problem…” he seemed distracted until you meet his yellow amber eyes… “Miss L/N, do you live alone?” This question sounds innocent coming from him but you cant help to feel a shiver down your spine, your gut heavied and your brain panicked with over thoughts.

Your silence made his smile widen, creepily in fact, you noticed his canines, if you can even call them that, his full set of teeth were sharp. He took noticed of this and quickly dropped it “Oh sorry, I had surgery to have a set of shark teeth… uh edgy ikr? I know my appearance can seem quite… off putting?…”

“I-Its alright, I find you quite handsome..” you let out a bit nervous, ya felt like a rabbit in front of a big wolf, salivating over you as you do your best to play your cards right.

Those words made him froze in place then a smug creeped up on his face and he looked down at you with sinister half lidded eyes… like a predator toying with his prey…

Gyutaro approached closer to you, you stepped back realizing you are now bumping against the wall of your kicthen. He gets close enough for him to leans down to your level with the support of the kitchen’s counter and the wall, he had you cornered.

Gyutaro’s smile was enough to spook you… you could feel his breathing hitting your skin, you could even feel his eyes staring you like a piece of steak.

“What’s that neighbor?… you like me?…”

His face lighted up with a sinister joy, he haves you, you’re fucked.

“Dee and I moved to the city right after we graduated college. We both knew we wanted to try dabbling in the whole hero thing, so we formed our own little two-person team. We helped each other pick out aliases.” She laughs. “The first version of my suit was just a bunch of mismatched red athletic wear and a cheap masquerade mask. The leggings were about as durable as tissue paper, and I had, like, this awful cutaway tank with zero arm protection, because I didn’t want to risk setting myself on fire.

“It started as more of a hobby than anything else. We’d do small jobs here or there when we had time, but nothing substantial, until we ended up collaborating with a larger team on one of the bigger supervillain take-downs a year or two in.

“After that, things sort of… Escalated?” She shrugs and waves a hand. “Like, it’s not like nobody knew who we were before then, but we started getting invitations. Other teams started asking if we’d help out with heists or join them on patrols. We got invited to galas and parties. One of our contacts hooked us up with proper, custom-made suits.

“It was great, but also, people started to expect things, you know? It turned to into less of a thing we did for fun on weekends and more of an obligation.”

Sebastian (Memento)

“I wanted to try my hand at grey-hat hacking— just to see if I could do it, because I was getting bored with my regular projects, and it was for a good cause, right? I put out an ad as a hero-aligned merc, but the only person who contacted me was Gladiolus.” He grimaces. “He wanted me to help him with a mission for free, because, and I quote, ‘It will be good exposure.’

“Anyway, I helped him break into a supervillain lair. It went… ‘Badly’ isn’t the right word, and of course Phoenix and I were on better terms by the end of it, but…” The corners of his mouth quirk upwards, and he lets out a little huff of air that might be a laugh. “There are a lot of good ways to meet your celebrity crush. Trapping her in a hallway because she interrupted an opposing hero team’s heist is not one of them.”

Shane (Anonymous Friend)

“I ignored my powers for as long as I could,” Shane says, running a hand across his jaw. “But then I got a premonition about something big, with a lot of collateral damage, and I guess I figured, hey, I’ve got some useful intel. It would be stupid to not to try and help, right?

“So I grabbed a magazine from the recycling and some scissors, and I cut out a bunch of letters. I got the idea from a TV crime serial, or something stupid like that. Anyway, I sent warnings out to most of the major hero teams. Signed it as ‘Anonymous Friend,’ which was meant to be reassuring, but in hindsight, was probably super creepy.

“Only one team took my little arts-and-crafts warnings seriously, but they ended up saving a lot of people. Enough that when I sent out another round of notes, the other teams actually listened.

“I didn’t expect anyone to give me credit, let alone speculate about my identity. Folks actually thought I was an evil henchperson or lower-profile villain who’d done a heel-face-turn, for a while— must’ve put the villains on edge for a bit, hah— but it doesn’t really matter what they thought I was. Good guy, bad guy…” He shrugs. “Whatever. The important part was that fewer people got hurt.”

Harvey (Doc)

“As a healer, I ended up taking a slightly different route than most new heroes. I would just carry around a mask and wait until a fight started nearby, and then rush to help anyone who needed medical assistance. Of course, I picked out my own alias, Eubiostagenic, based on Greek medical terms— “eu” (good), “bios” (life), “sta” (stability), and “genic” (producing or causing)… Took me about a week to settle on it, back in pre-med.” His moustache twitches in what might be amusement. “Of course, everyone ended up just calling me Doc.”

Leah (Morning Glory)

“I didn’t even know I had powers until I started taking my botany classes. And once Kel found out… It’s not like I didn’t have a choice in becoming Morning Glory, but…” She frowns, her mouth pressed into a thin line. “I tried to at least stick to hero-aligned merc jobs, but Kel wasn’t always exactly up-front with me about what type of job we were doing. Sometimes, mitigating the damage after we got there was the best I could do.”

“Ooh, where do I start?” she asks, smiling wide. “Okay, so like… There’s a lot to pick from here, but I guess my favorite thing about him is that he’s a really steady, thoughtful person? Like, he thinks before he does stuff, and he’s the person I turn to whenever I need a sanity check. I can always trust him to tell me whenever I’m being too impulsive.

“In terms of physical features… Seb’s got really nice hair! And a nice face. And a nice butt. Just, like… All of him is great, honestly.” She waves her hands and shrugs. “But if I have to pick just one thing to be my favorite, it’s probably his hair.”

Sebastian

“My favorite feature? That’s kind of tough.” He thinks for a moment, chewing the inside of his lip. “I think my favorite thing about Ava is how passionate she is. She gets really invested in things, and she just… She cares about what she does, and she always gives it her all.

“In terms of physical features, uh…” He glances away, ducking his head between his shoulders. His face is pink. “Her eyes, I guess?” [A/N: He’s lying. He does like her eyes a lot, but her legs win the Favorite Physical Feature Award by a small margin.]

Abigail

“I like that she’s, uh… Self-assured isn’t the right word. Earnest, I think?” Abigail says. “She’s spent a lot of time thinking about who she is and what she wants to become, and she’s a good person, even if she doubts herself sometimes. She’s strong in her convictions! She’s a complicated person, and I really admire how she works all of the different facets of herself into her art.

“My favorite part of Leah is her hands. I know, it’s kind of a weird choice, but… I dunno, they’re strong! They’re what she uses to express herself!” She giggles. “And it’s always fun to use palm-reading as an excuse to hold one of them.”

Leah

“Abigail is… A very strong-willed person,” Leah says, her voice fond. “She’s determined, especially when it comes to protecting the people she cares about, and she has a strong sense of justice. But she pairs that determination with empathy. Does that sound strange?

“It took me almost a year, after I moved to the valley, to really feel like myself again— to trust people again— and my progress wasn’t linear. But Abigail’s been…” She searches for words. “Whenever I need to step back and process something, she respects my boundaries. I can always trust that she’ll still be there when I decide to come back, but she doesn’t act like I owe her anything.

“She’s determined, but that determination makes her a safe place to land.

“My favorite part of her, from a physical standpoint, is… Probably her hair. It has a lot of interesting movement, and it’s very fun to draw.” Leah thinks for a moment, then grins. “Although I have to admit, her biceps are pretty nice, too.”

haunted house au

lwj goes into a haunted house with his brother. he doesn't think it will be anything particularly exciting; maybe someone will jump out at them, or something will pop out of a hiding place. nothing special, in other words, but his brother wanted to try it out.

they pay the admission fee (not much, its a temporary set up not a permanent fixture) and head inside. immediately, lwj notices the musty smell of seldom used props that only come out of their boxes once a year, complete with artificial cobwebs in every corner.

the first tacky ghost-monster-thing pops out of a coffin (they're not a vampire, and they have hair covering their face) and lxc covers his chest with his hand, and yelps politely, so as not to make the ghost feel bad. at least, thats what lwj assumes-- it wasn't scary at all

he rolls his eyes and moves on. the next corridor is full of boobie traps, and eerie lighting. at one point there's a lightning strike, and atmospheric rain sounds played on a subpar speaker which lwj thinks is hidden behind one of the skulls.

lxc gasps and jumps back at the appropriate moments, but lwj can tell he's slightly underwhelmed by the whole experience as well. a pity, really. another ghost-monster pops out at them towards the end, and actually manages to take both of them by surprise. so much so that

it takes lwj a few moments to realise that its the /same/ monster-person. as he recovers from his shock, the ghost starts to laugh, "Hah! that's what you get for ignoring me the first time!" the ghost says, pulling back the curtain of his hair to reveal a shockingly handsome face

lwj narrows his eyes at the beautiful ghost man, and clenches his jaw. he only realises that he's outright /glaring/ when his brother rests one hand on his arm, a gesture that he rarely has to make

he stalks past the ghost, who is now wheeze-laughing so hard that he's having to lean against the wall to stay upright, and out into the daylight. his brother is close behind him, "Wangji, please, he wasn't making fun of you." lwj is pretty sure he /was/, actually.

but that's not important. with purpose, he makes his way to the back of the (very short) line again, and brushes off lxc when he tries to get his attention. the attendant gives him a funny look when he pays to go in a second time, but doesn't say anything.

lwj steps through the faux-stone doorway, alone this time, and allows the spooky ambience to wash over him. without his brother here, he doesn't stop to look at the skeletons in the closet, or the hands sticking out of the walls. he heads straight for the coffin room.

exactly on cue, the coffin door bursts open, and the pretty ghost-man, now recovered from his laughing fit, comes staggering out with his arms outstretched. lwj grabs them, and pushes him right back into the coffin, leaning bodily over him

"what the-?" the man gasps, peering up at him through his hair. lwj pushes it aside, a little too roughly, and bites his tongue. "I'm sorry. Did I frighten you?" lwj asks, his voice hoarse. the man just blinks at him, his mouth hanging open slightly.

"Uhh. My name is Wei Ying." he says, instead of answering his question. his face is visibly pink, even in the greenish light. "....Lan Zhan," lwj replies.

his wrists still trapped, wwx arches away from the back of the coffin and into lwj's body. he bites his lip, and lwj snaps, ducking down to bite them himself.

their kiss is unpracticed; sharp, and rushed. still, wwx opens up when lwj pushes his tongue inside, and hums appreciatively when lwj moves to leave marks on his throat. "this is a first for me," wwx almost-laughs, "normally when i make ppl jump, they get embarrassed, not hard!""Shut up," lwj grunts, crowding him up against the wall. "Is this a thing for you? do you, like, get aroused in scary situations? ahh, wait, wait, stop /biting/ me!" "You are not scary," lwj murmurs, close enough that his lips brush wwx's earlobe. he squirms.

"I'm a ghost, uhn, of /course/ i'm scary," wwx says, but he's unconvincing. wwx's costume is frustrating-- it's a full length gown, so lwj can't get his hands underneath, even though he wants to feel his skin. wwx moans anyway, even when lwj gropes him though his clothes.

(anyway they get caught and lwj gets booted out of the haunted house. lxc is waiting outside, and is nice enough not to comment on how red lwj's lips are) (as he gets frogmarched out, wwx tells him his shift finishes in two hours )

t/n: The idiom is literally “Candy and Whip”, which is equivalent to the use of “Carrots and Sticks”. “Carrots and Sticks”, as in the idiom that people use to describe when one uses both the promise of a benefit and a punishment to manipulate someone to do something. random ex: a person says that if you let them stay at your house for a while, they’ll buy you a new phone... but if you reject them, they say they’re going to set your car on fire. well carrots and sticks don’t make for a pretty mental image so I changed it. lol

In common ikevam fashion, this is a collection event to coincide with the release of Faust’s Main Route. imo the route is doing a better job at showing his chara positively than Will’s route, but..... faust was never my type to begin with so u know LOL but im only on like chapter 12-ish anyway so yea nothing really significant has happened

anyway, i am pleasantly surprised that the Count got to partake in this one!! it might seem like a really long time since the last Count appearance under the context of this blog, but that’s only really bc ive sat out on covering Count-involved events (namely the AU scenario event w/ a shared route with Leo and the “caring for a child” collection event). i don’t think they’re super bad or anything (i actually like the latter for treading newer ground on event topics for once)…. im just chillin. ive never been a very active blog regardless

this was kind of interesting bc the event actually places this one above leo’s (leo is the story before, which puts him at “4th place” out of 7 if we call arthur “1st”). this is weird bc even tho occasionally they’ll mess with story order not coinciding with character popularity if they feel that the story in question is more ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), but putting leo’s story that early is rly weird. leo’s story being given before even mozart is like…. wow someone’s not too proud of that story LOL ill be honest tho…. the leo story is pretty basic, past stories in the leo sexi man canon considered. well i get it – leo is not the type to take out his negative emotions onto others, which is more or less related to the theme of this event.

this collection event is only a week long, so im wondering if they have anything interesting lined up. man i hope so…… clearly they kno ppl who like the count exist bc they bothered to move his story up. but where’s the respect!! (jk… partly)

i watched the newest opening & ending and i have a lot of opinions.

first of all, i Really REALLY hope that they are pulling a fast one on us and will switch up the visuals for both the op and the ed once we get to mva. i honestly cannot rlly like. even imagine mva having those particular sequences of animation accompanying them. its such a tonal whiplash

im also flabbergasted at the fact that class 1-A is in this op at all and that they overshadow the league. those kids are not going to have a big role in those arcs at all so im just???? what are they Doing There????

the ed is weirdly focused on hawks for some reason, even tho his backstory will only come after the war arc. im guessing its mostly bc a lot of ppl like him and they want to build up some more sympathy for hawks before he kills twice. this is just. such a bizzare move

the league doesnt really get a lot of spotlight in the op, which is the main reason why i have any hope at all that at the very least the opening will change. like a “hah, gotcha!” moment for the anime-onlys, since mva in general was barely advertized (im guessing its meant to be a surprise, just like it was to us when the chapters started coming out)

however if the op and ed stay the same... man, would that be incredibly disappointing. i really hoped for an opening and ending where we could see more of the league and maybe even portray them as more than villains, since the manga is trying to go into that direction, especially with the mva arc, but at this point idk what to think. at the very least i hope they animate the lov consistently? id love to see their round manga faces, but i know thats too much to ask from bones, lol

The “Terminus” Bandcamp page states that the album was done between 2016 and 2020. That's a long period in your standards! Did you get some sort of writer's block with Jesu? Or was it because you were so busy with your numerous projects?

— I never get writers block, I just simply move on to the next thing if I’m not currently inspired to work on a specific project. Most my records, for many years, have been written and recorded over extended periods of time; I work when inspiration strikes, when it doesn’t I move onto the next thing; there’s never a block for me with creation generally, maybe just specific areas. i take large breaks for my music so as to afford some sort of distance, gone are the times when an album would be hammered out in a month!

''When I Was Small'' has kind of a Radiohead thing in the vocals, whereas ''Alone'' reminds me a lot of Sigur Rós. Are those bands part of your background?

— Ok, interesting observation, but no Radiohead is not an influence on this song, the biggest influences on the vocals were Liam Gallagher from Oasis, and subconsciously "White Flag" by Godflesh (which I only discovered after the album was complete). I do love some Radiohead though, as I do Sigur Rós, but neither band is a direct or conscious influence. Musically “When I was Small” was mostly influenced by trying to recreate a vibe of early Neil Young mixed with Oasis, in a jesu fashion, coupled with a demo production; intentionally underproduced. I’m not sure where a lot of the influence on “Alone” came from, electronic pop music for sure, short and sweet was the intention, driven entirely by the voice sample.

Regarding “Terminus,” did you set yourself a framework or musical approach beforehand like you did for “Every Day I Get Closer to the Light From Which I Came?“

— Not really no, generally when I work on a bunch of songs things will fall into place naturally, the songs become a whole and then collectively the songs will become conceptual as i write, they build their own logic, so to speak, I don’t force anything, I let things happen organically as I write and record.

I think around 2013, you said “Every Day I Get Closer to the Light From Which I Came” was going to set a precedent for the next album. Now that it's out, do you still think so? Personally, even though both records are different, I can definitely hear a connection.

— Yeah, shame it took 7 years to come to fruition! And many things changed over those 7 years, as ever. Jesu certainly documents my personal journey in life, it’s ultra personal, Godflesh is much more external comparatively. A lot to the solo jesu work took a backseat when I worked on the collaborations with Sun Kil Moon, but that was very refreshing and inspired me to take jesu further, I had notions of discontinuing the project at some point, but the collabs with Sun Kil Moon inspired me to keep pursuing jesu.

"Every Day I Get Closer to the Light From Which I Came” was inspired in great part by you becoming a father. Can you tell us a bit about what was on your mind when you wrote “Terminus?”

— That’s very true, especially the initial journey of bringing life into the/our world. everything is there in the lyrics and artwork for "Terminus" so of course, like a lot of my work, depends on the listeners perspectives, they can make it their own, make it personal. But it’s essentially about endings, and my obsession with finality, my sensitivity to it and my fear of it. There’s a line in the title song that says “my end, our end, the end, the end”, which pretty much sums it up.

The EP “Never” you released before “Terminus” is quite different and more focused on electronics. I remember you telling me that you liked going experimental on EPs, doing stuff you wouldn't do on a full length. So I figure that's still the case?

— Yeah, I like experimenting with everything, I like satisfying myself with different ideas, obviously that doesn’t suit my listeners too much, but I make this music for myself, and I’m always trying to do better. I still don’t know why I put myself through the trial and hell of releasing music, I often think about just recording for myself and not bothering with an audience, but I’m not really capable of earning money in other ways, so I have to finish music and release it, let it go. For me "Never" was just another way of interpreting the jesu mood, nothing deviates too much from the original intention of the project. It’s weird, critically, it was perceived as this big electronic departure, whereas jesu has sounded pretty much like this most of it’s lifetime! “Pale Sketches", "Lifeline" even "Silver” is all mostly electronic, save a real drum loop in the song "Silver", but this EP seemed to get this thing that its all electronic, whereas it;’s no more electronically oriented than any other jesu record I have made. jesu is a mood that can be explored and experimented with, I’m not making the first album over and over, some can’t get over that, but that was a different moment in my life which I captured, and as an artist who challenges oneself besides the audience you can never win, and one will generally never win hah. This is a new jesu, it comes with age, transitions. "Never" was intentionally idiosyncratic and deliberately fvcked up sounding, and I think by and large critically the subtleties were lost on people.

“Never” features two version of ''Never There for You'', one of them described as the ''original vision''. Can you explained how you ended up releasing two version of this song?

— The “original vision” existed like that since around 2010, I shelved it, it was to be a Pale Sketcher song, I had an album’s worth of similar songs, I still do, couldn’t decide if they should be jesu or Pale Sketcher. I sent them to Aphex Twin / Richard James because he was a huge fan of the Pale Sketcher EP “Seventh Heaven”, we were talking about a release on his label Rephlex, I had all these songs that were floating between jesu and Pale Sketcher. But then he folded Rephlex for good, a real shame, so I was left with all these songs in limbo, I still am, but at that period I shelved them all. I returned to them around 2018 and started adding guitars and vocals, thinking that they will now definitely be jesu songs. “Never There for You” was one of them, so I wanted the listener to hear what it was originally before I added more of organic me. I’m working on finalising all those songs for Rephlex into future jesu, probably an album that I hope to release late 2021, it’s not a "Terminus" though, and probably most ppl will hate it hah.

“Terminus” is the first album to feature Ted Parsons in a long while. Did you invite him because you felt these songs needed his touch?

— I wanted some live drums, 3 songs only. I was going to play them myself, like on "Opiate Sun". "Infinity" etc, but I really wanted Ted involved and see how he interpreted my drum parts, he always swings something and makes it interesting. he’s a very real drummer, and a very real human being.

When touring is possible again, would you like to tour with Jesu, with Ted on drums?

— I may tour solo, with electronics and projections. The band thing is tiresome and always just sounds like a band, bands bore me these days because of the constraints of the instruments, rock records also bore me these days; same productions, etc, very little actual aesthetic, but its popular and what do I know. But I’d rather jesu now sound hugely expansive live, not just like a rock band. But i’m still unsure. Live drums swallow my voice live, I can’t sing above them, and jesu is a tiny project, can’t play big venues with stage separation and screens around the drums, and 8 guys diving around onstage, it’s not affordable. I stopped performing as jesu for some time due to all those reasons.

You said “Silver” is probably your favourite Jesu record. Are there other Jesu albums that stand out in your mind?

— Did I say that?! Haha. I don’t recall, and that opinion changes every day I feel. I like how concise and all encompassing "Silver" is; it covers most of the ground that I feel the project should cover. But "Terminus" is my favourite jesu album, and it should be, otherwise I would not feel I was moving forward, and I feel I am, it is the best jesu album I have made.

Last year, you told Olivier ''Zoltar'' Badin that the next Zonal album would probably go in the direction of it's title track ''Wrecked''. Is it still true to this day and what can you tell us about that upcoming album?

— Well, a lot of time has passed since, but I think Kevin and I are still quite struck on that song as a template for future recordings, although everything changes all the time, of course, and time is passing fast once again, we haven’t discussed Zonal in some time.

I know you don't actually consider yourself as a guitarist. With you focusing on your electronic projects like JK Flesh and Zonal lately, do you ever get tired of guitar? I'm asking this because I recently discussed the subject with Steven Wilson. He basically told me that after 30 years writing and doing gigs with guitar, he's feeling more creative and excited when writing music on other instruments and I wondered if you ever felt something similar.

— All instruments are just a means to an end for me; a tool for the bigger job, I don’t really wish to be overly proficient at any instrument, I liked that about punk, and it’s what I’m not that fond of about overly progressive music, it’s like it’s for show, I don’t do anything for show, I’d rather be shit than great, it’s more interesting, it reflects the human condition, imperfection. I don’t wish for things to sound perfect, whatever that is, people should not come to my music for that, they probably don’t and it’s probably why my audience is so small haha.

I recently discovered that you worked with Josh Eustis with the mastering of the JK Flesh / Orphx live album and was a bit surprised. How did that happen?

— Josh is a very good friend of Dominick Fernow’s (Prurient / Vatican Shadow / Hospital Productions, etc), and Dominick is a very close friend of mine. I was aware that Josh does very good mastering besides being an extremely talented artist, so Dominick suggested josh master that collaboration, and it sounds excellent!

I interviewed Lee Dorrian some time ago and we were talking about the impact Napalm Death had, not just the band itself but all the bands who were formed after playing in that band: Godflesh, Carcass, Cathedral, Scorn... Lee thought this legacy had a lot to do with John Peel broadcasting a wide array of music on young aspiring musicians. How would you explain such creativity and versatility from musicians who all played in Napalm Death at one point?

—  Lee is absolutely correct, a lot of very young kids listened to John Peel, most generations did, his taste exposed music to many of us who were already enquiring at a young age that we would not have heard anywhere else and of course back then this centralised things, not fragmented them like the internet does; a kid now can absorb an artist entire catalog in an hour, speed listen to it all, then have an opinion, but it’s informed, no context, no history, no experience. We heard music then on Peel and then hunted it down. It took work, valuable work that paid dividends. Peel’s broad appreciation of eternally subversive music and otherwise told us that music didnt need to exist in such strict compartments, that’s it’s all part of a greater whole, so when groups of musicians collaborated even at such young ages, our tastes were informed and wide, very rarely singular.

Can you tell us a bit about you latest remixing output? What were the tracks that you enjoyed the most remixing? Those are the names I could find: Full of Hell, Oathbreaker and a lot of projects I've never heard of.

— I always and love to remix, I love the fact that I didn’t create this music but can make something new from someone else’s work. Music is endless, for me, it’s just when you wish to end it, but ultimately it can never end. I have some remixes that I love moire than others, but only over time, I never let a remix go unless I am as happy as can be with it. Sometimes I would’ve loved to have done more, my Killing Joke remix is a good example of that, I wanted to go further, but Youth of Killing Joke told me they were happy with where I was at, I think I could’ve made it much better. The Oathbreaker remix you mentioned is a favourite of mine from the last years worth of my remixes. I’ll remix anyone, if they can afford my fee and I have the time!

I'm curious, since you released some of your music with your own label with Godflesh, Jesu and other projects, did it have an impact on the revenue you got from streaming platforms like Spotify, compared to albums released on Earache or Hydra Head? I'm asking this in the light of the neverending controversy regarding streaming revenue for musicians.

— On my own label more money can be earned from these services due to no split with another label, which usually would be 50/50, but streaming is very small as is common knowledge. I never see any royalties from Earache so can’t compare their rates etc since Godflesh is constantly recouping an advance from Columbia / Sony for the "Selfless" album that Earache, contractually, can recoup from, even though they didn’t give the advance, so they’re making money from the band and from an advance they never paid, which these days you would think that besides being unethical that it would be criminal, but such were the contracts in the 80’s / 90’s. So I’ve never seen a single penny from streaming with Earache!

I know it might be pointless to ask you, since someone's mind can change with time but do you still think “Post Self” may be your last album with Godflesh? Your told us last year that you weren't sure if you had enough in you creatively to do another album and also that the constant screaming was a bit harder to do.

— Hah, the shouting/screaming live now takes its toll, it does with age, I’m unsure due to not performing for so long thanks to the pandemic how my voice would be for Godflesh now in a live setting, I’d have very little problem in the studio. I’m still struck on the fact that there may not be another full length studio album from Godflesh, I haven’t been inspired to initiate one for numerous reasons, and I don’t wish for us to repeat ourselves in any way, I do have a lot of interesting old material though, some good rare stuff, demos, “Us and Them in Dub” which is also in the works, but I work on that sporadically, when I feel inspired to do so. So there’s a lot of good stuff coming.

Last time I interviewed you in 2014, Aphex Twin was making his grand return with “Syro”. I remember you telling me that the album was still shrinkwrapped on your desk. Knowing you're a big Aphex fan, I wanted to know if you liked that album, especially knowing that a lot of fans were disappointed by it.

— Ahh it was such a long time ago now that we spoke last! I love "Syro”, but I love Aphex, and since I first heard "Didgeridoo" when it was released and then "Quoth", he will always be a favourite, "Syro" may not be an Aphex favourite for me, but it’s still amazing, he is amazing; creative, subversive and doesn’t give a fvck ultimately, he’d also never release anything if he didnt really have to, he does this for himself, for me the best art is entirely selfish and should consider no one. People are always disappointed, a lot of people just can’t live with the fact that an artist strays from their own personal conception of what an artist should be, it’s some sort of misguided entitlement, I lost that when II was around 14, a lot of people don’t lose it and now these people have the internet. No artist owes me anything, if they gave me one thing in my life then i will always respect their art, regardless of whether it works for me or not, and if I don’t like it much, I won’t be peddling that opinion on the internet in an entitled egotistical manner, I’m glad I did not know that a lot of people were disappointed, haha.

Review: Two Car

After years of watching just sports anime with boys I've become increasingly bored with every new release. My main problem is that the tropes among animes are just recycled over and over again. Moreover I have developed an aversion to being able to identify male voice actors across different works. Watching animes have sometimes turned into a "guess the voice actor" game with myself and eventually I hated it.

Therefore, since 2021 I have started watching sports anime that feature girls.

Anyhow the first anime I'm reviewing is called Two Car [CONTAINS SPOILERS]

Setup

Highschool girls. I forgot what year they're in. They live on this island where racing is a Thing. Their school is a powerhouse for sidecar racing. And sidecar racing enthusiasts all over japan go there and hang out. Basically their whole island is a sidecar racetrack. Their culture revolves around it. Yuri Miyata and Megumi Meguro are the best highschool racers in their island, and also in japan.

The team is composed of these 2 athletes, 2 technicians and their coach. Before the series started, their coach left them to pursue his dreams of being a pro racer in the Isle of Man in England. He could leave the girls behind coz they were already skilled af and they had a local lady coach who could handle things. Now Yuri and Megumi may be partners but they are also rivals. They want to beat each other guts. Think momoshiro and kaido from prince of tennis. They work quite well together coz they're so competitive with each other.

Now make no mistake, Sidecar Racing is an extreme and dangerous sport. People legit die from this irl. The trust between pairs (a driver and passenger) is important because they need to balance each other AND the vehicle or else they'll steer off-course and crash (and then die).

From what I remember, this 12-episode anime focuses on the national competition in sidecar racing. Therefore the best pairs all over japan have come to the island to be the national champion. 5 other female sidecar pairs are introduced. For some reason, the drivers and the passengers are housed separately, but the pairs train and plan together.

The anime follows the histories and conflicts of each pair as they all practice to get used to the race track. This culminates to the final battle at the end of the series.

My Rating: 3/5 -the plot is pretty meh. I was honestly curious about how it will unfold though. The characters are weird and meta af, combine that with girl power and "female flavor" (for lack of better word), it's a different POV on things honestly.

Art and Animation

It's pretty decent ngl. I enjoyed watching the racing sequences and how the sidecar pairs moved while operating the vehicles. It is smooth and the colors are pretty.

Technicality

I'm not into vehicles but there were technical aspects discussed. Modifications and etc. are often shown and you can see how the characters manipulate the different parts of the vehicle (like clutch and accelerator handling, etc.) Techniques to improve speed and handle curves/bumps are also briefly explained among other stuff. I dont know how realistic or legal some of the stuff they're doing tho so..watch with a grain of salt. XD

Characters

I'd say the characters were interesting. The main characters aren't beginners and are smh treated as pros even in their own island. So you dont get that "dumb beginner idiot with freaky abilities vs loner genius" partnership that is so common and overused in shonen series.

It's refreshing to see adults enjoy the same sport too and they also help the characters.

The MC's rivalry is honestly so..uh...petty and icky if you think about it. Both of them got this crush on their coach (help me pls) and they want to defeat each other to become their coach's partner in the sport. It's honestly so childish? but also reminded me of CLAMP/CCS bullsht and if I survived CLAMP then this plot point is basically peanuts.

They have healthy competition tho. Both of them grew up together (childhood friends) and developed love for the sport together because their moms were the og teammates. (yeah their parents participation and love for the sport is a big thing in this series).

The other character pairs are interesting too:

announcers

twins

master-servant

lesbians (like legit sailor neptune and uranus type)

osaka girls

and etc.

Each had their own drama and they resolved it within the series.

Realism

Honestly this show is more meta than sport. Like... it's not for casual viewing. I remember there was some deep psychological issue which the twin pair portrayed. There's a lot of drama okay? HOWEVER!!! I've only been exposed to Shonen type of drama (like the USTs and hero complexes) so whatever Two Car had was unique to me!! Girls are really written differently. It easily reminded me of my interactions with fellow girls (albiet more extreme).

Fanservice

They are always shown to be in the onsen after every practice day but honestly it doesnt count as fanservice. Only their busts are shown.

You'll have to get used to shots of the butt especially in sequences of the passenger manuevering the vehicle tho. I guaranteet that there is no excessive boob action sequences and other sht.

Look I have seen stuff over the years and since this show didn't provide see-through-shirt stuff, Two Car is "fine" in my books.

HOWEVER There is a dream sequence (one of the characters dream stuff up) which is straight up bdsm (i think that's in ep 6). NGL I dropped this show for a while because of that but hah it's honestly just a few dreams for one episode.

I TOLD YOU THIS SHOW IS META ALREADY.

Final Notes

Would I recommend this show? Honestly...no. But watching this was an Experience. Against the highly sanitized world of shonen anime, it's an interesting change of pace.

First of all, in girls sports, there is a lot of casual skinship because it's normal and comfortable. And there is more communication. Maybe it's a writing flaw that conflicts aren't as dragged out but idk, we dont have a lot of decent female sports anime to see what really works. Because I am often frustrated with how slow burn most shonen are, seeing characters resolve conflicts BY TALKING IT OUT is the most rewarding experience.

Honestly I really had fun watching the whole thing. The ending made me want to flip tables tho but the rest was quite enjoyable.

Personally I think ppl have more freedom in writing girls/women. There is just so much you can do with them.

Isn't Brad Anderson the one with the Nenets Laika? He seemed pretty cool, though I can't help but to feel weird at the sheer amount of dogs he has, especially really intense breeds like Dogo Argentinos and I think a couple Boerboels. Unless you meant someone else!

Yep, that's the guy. A lot of ppl don't like talking about breeders publicly, which I get, BUT I try to be open about everything so:

We're Facebook friends, have talked, get along. I know a couple people who've met him and have good things to say. But I don't have the full story on any of this. And I'll be clear, I respect the work he's put into importing breeds and preserving some of the Nihon Ken etc in the US. And I also admire how he's handling his "backwoods companion" cross project--he knows exactly what he wants, has had dozens of breeds, and knows he can't find it in any single breed. So he's doing it himself without the goal of creating a closed studbook style breed. He's breeding individuals and lines, not concepts of what the breeds he's using should be like. I also aim to do that

For me it's not so much the number that bothers me. His entire family pitches in and he works from home. A lot of very popular show and working breeders have 20+ dogs, and Kiwi's breeder has at least 12. But yeah, he has. a lot. lol and I can see how that would bother some people. But he also knows them as individuals, has a lot of land and an active lifestyle that his dogs are a part of

I believe he's rehomed and moved out of short coated mastiff types and LGDs entirely in 2019? after his family sold their livestock and realized the winters weren't good for the single coated breeds. There may still be a few around but he's not breeding them (only planned 2020 litter is the Nenets). The dogo litter he has rn is from a friend who couldn't raise it

A lot of people also don't like how much rehoming he does but tbh, again, show breeders retire dogs too. I plan to. If a dog would be better off someplace else he finds that

Essentially what I'm not a fan of is that he doesn't do a lot of health testing on his breeding dogs. V. common for the breeds he's in but not... good. lol. I've heard other health rumors but nothing substantial. The Nenets for example only have genetic testing, not hip or eye. His WSL doesn't have hip x-rays, don't know how many actually do? I also am unclear on what his socialization for puppies entails besides just the family handling them and his non-DA dogs interacting with them. And good socialization is really key if you're raising any litter, let alone breeds or mixes prone to reactivity, that you keep past 3 months old

And unfortunately, since a lot of his breeds tend towards dog aggression or selectivity, he does have to break up a lot of fights that lead to minor injury--I can't help but wonder if his kennel system and rotating play groups are as safe as they could be

Anyways my point is I guess, I'm not saying he's a bad breeder and plenty of "reputable" people do similar things but have more money and show ribbons. But there are things I'm not a fan of, just like with most breeders tbh! For ex. some English shepherd breeders I follow do things that bug the hell out of me but I still respect them

(i think ive mentioned a few times tht lou likes singing but that is admittedly an understatement. he loves singing. he hears a song he knos the lyrics to and he feels incredibly compelled to sing tho his lack of confidence stops him in public spaces. u may hear a bit of humming when no ones paying attention to him tho)

(going off that there are certain kindsa songs he likes singing more than others, think its been mentioned that he likes higher energy music generally speaking so naturally thats the kinda music he likes to sing to but he REALLY likes songs he can just belt to it feels so satisfying to him. he is surprisingly good at adele songs)

(he cannot sing really rough throaty songs to save his life tho like just thinkin abt it makes his throat hurt. he likes a fair bit of metal and screamo n stuff but his voice is just too smooth to sing it. smooth but lightly textured. like vanilla icecream w the lil vanilla beans n stuff still in it. hes also not very good at whistling)

(hes mostly a tenor but he does have a pretty decent range and his falsetto is p decent tho it does hurt his throat)

(its also been mentioned that hes alright at guitar but i like 2 thnk inbetween whatever actual lessons he took the very first songs he taught himself were probably sum very embarrassing sappy little love songs w simple chords. u kno how it is when ur a repressed gay teenager)

(idk how any of yall read his voice but generally he talks kinda quietly, very much not a very loud or present person, which is good for not getting caught committing crimes but not very good for socializing as he has discovered.)

(his semi soft voice is decently reflective of his physical characteristics too, i think i mentioned like once that his hair is very thick and soft, but his skin is also p soft with the exception of some scars here and there)

(speaking of his more notable scars are a burn scar on his right forearm from when he was really young, no one remembers exactly how he got it but it had something to do with a kitchen accident, and sum cut scars on his left shoulder from shortly after he’d moved out of his mom’s house. he also has various minor scars on his hands and wrists from handling/playing with cats and getting into the occasional knife fight back in the city as well as a very small scar on his upper lip from a time a dog bit his face when he was young)

(u might not guess it but he is incredibly clumsy and does not have the best spatial awareness when it comes to like. objects. he does fine not crashing into people but hes probably bumped into a lamp post at least once)

(idk if its ever come across but he also does lots of hand gestures when hes talking. snapping his fingers or shaking his hands when hes tryna think trying to illustrate what hes talking about with vague motions. he does a lot of shit w his hands in general, tapping fingers on surfaces drumming his hands on his legs, doin peace signs n finger guns and playing with his fingers/clothes mindlessly)

(hes also the kinda person who has an idle animation™ when hes not distracted by talking to someone or just paying attention to something he’ll probably rock back n forth on his feet or bobbing up and down probably to the rhythm of a song stuck in his head or something, speaking of songs, again, humming is a thing he does too)

(if u read the previous 2 points and thought “that sounds like stimming” ur exactly right)

(he stumbles over his words a bunch when hes excited, even if hes trying to keep his cool stumbling and stuttering are some of the most tell tale signs of him being excited tho it also happens when hes anxious or flustered. id say it applies to strong emotions in general but it absolutely does not apply to stuff like when hes real angry or sad)

(when hes real angry or sad his speech tends to actually be much more concise, he’ll speak slower and take time to really consider his words. when he’s angry both his expression and the words he chooses have the potential to cut like a hot knife thru soft butter, and when he’s sad hes more considering his words to try and keep from bringing the person hes talking to down)

(ive drawn him with a sketchbook a couple times but he probably has a journal with some writing in it too, nothing serious just thoughts he has sometimes phrased with flowery words but its not like. super amazing poetry or anything. hes no elliott)

(speaking of sketchbooks he absolutely draws his friends from time to time. hes incredibly embarrassed by it and hed never show anyone but he does it. a lot of his doodles are accompanied by lil thoughts and comments he has while makin em)

(back when he worked for joja i like to think he was like a phone operator for like. the joja help line or smth which is an oxymoron and he probably spent most of his work day getting yelled at by ppl over the phone. he does not like talking on the phone. much prefers texting)

(idk how clear ive made it on the blog but he absolutely hates morris. morris is probably the only person in town who hes like physically threatened. morris has thusly elected to avoid fucking with him as much as physically possible)

(i think its been mentioned he carries some kinda pocket knife on him at all times but he also likes to carry one a those novelty combs that looks n acts like a switchblade but its not. mostly just to fuck w ppl. pull out what looks like a switchblade then open it and hah uve been fooled it was a comb all along)

(speaking of combs bcus his hair is thick and wavy as mentioned before hes gotta take real good care of it or it gets. Unmanageable. when he was a teenager he didnt take care of it for a while n it got so long and tangled it broke like 2 combs it was awful)

(that in mind he is prone to getting wicked bed head. catch him when he first wakes up and its like a rat king was planted on his head)

(also did i mention he has several knives? pocket knives switchblades hes probably got a decorative dagger in a box somewhere, and ofc his monster fighting sword. he probably has a pair of brass knuckles somewhere too)

(its defintiely been hinted at more than a few times but lou is a huge foodie. he is always hungry and loves food but he cant stand mint or bitter tastes sometimes he has a hard time w sour stuff too. he likes spicy and savory/umami/w/e foods best, and while he does have a decent sweet tooth he can make himself sick off sugary stuff pretty easy especially w really dense sweets like fudgy brownies n shit)

(the reason hes not so good w mint and bitter things is cus his senses r very keen and bitter and mint are very unpleasant to his mouth and nose. theyre intense and stick around much longer than theyre welcome and it just feels bad ykno. this in mind he could not explain to u why he likes spicy stuff as much as he does)

Longform Audio Creepypasta Recs

hey TMA fandom! as a new TMA listener but looooongtime creepypasta fan, I find it rly cool that ppl who aren’t into horror are getting into TMA! I’m hoping this will help bring fresh blood (hah) to the horror fandom, so if you’ve realized that you rather like audio horror but don’t know what else to look into, I’m here to recommend my favorite longform creepypasta narrations! 

this is far from an exhaustive list of long creepypastas, but I just want to introduce some of the stories I consider to be the best of the genre. and while I’m just reccing longform in this post, there are plenty of short one-shots I could rec if anyone wants to ask me abt a specific theme/Entity or even a specific ep of TMA (there are several MAG eps that brought me straight back to a specific creepypasta or two, lmao)

also, I’ll just be linking to MrCreepyPasta’s narrations b/c I’m heavily biased so I mostly listen to him, but there are plenty of other great narrators out there like CreepsMcPasta, CreepypastaJr, etc. (most of their names are variations on a theme asdfgh). and if u just want the text version of any of these, every video I link has a link in its own description back to the original text posting of the story

THAT outta the way, here are my recs! I’ll try to remember all the trigger warnings I can, but keep in mind I tend to be p hardy to most horror content, so there may be some things that slip past simply b/c they don’t register to me. also it’s been a minute since I’ve listened to some of these, so some have updated or I may have just forgotten some aspects. I’ll also update this if ppl find it useful and I find more good long pastas~

Penpal (2.5 hrs, complete)

op recounts some of their odd experiences as a child, all of which stem from an elementary school project involving a pen pal. as he recalls these experiences, a horrifying picture of his past begins to emerge...

easily my favorite pasta of all time-- and that’s saying something, considering there are some damn good recs here. it’s one of the first I read so long ago, and few have come close to what this one made me feel. op does an incredible job of capturing the nostalgia and childhood wanderlust of youth, and the last few lines of each chunk of the story hit like a goddamned truck-- esp "Friends”, I cry like a baby every time, it just.... hits something tender in me...

TW: stalking of children, subsequent kidnapping and child abuse at the end (and while it’s not necessarily *confirmed*, heavy implications of child sexual abuse, for that last bit). implied cat death. some graphic description of the victim of a hit-and-run

Search and Rescue Woods (~5 hrs, ongoing?)

op recalls several of the strange and disturbing experiences (their own and quoted from coworkers) of working search-and-rescue for an unnamed national forest in the US

y’know that feeling u get when u see photos lawn chairs just sitting at the bottom of the ocean? even if there’s a perfectly good explanation for why they’re there, it’s still haunting b/c it feels wrong to see them there, in that context? that’s basically this entire assortment of stories-- the obvious example being the stairs, of course, but even a lot of the human elements feel so out of place and wrong. if you’re a fan of Spiral-type horror w/ a hard edge of Stranger, this is the story for u

TW: generally clinical but graphic descriptions of mutilated bodies. use of the r-slur against an nd individual (it’s during a story that the main character is quoting from a different one-off character, so it thankfully only happens the one time..). child death, in certain stories. some wild animal death

Borrasca (2.5 hrs, complete)

Sam moves to a small mountain town with his family after his father’s job relocates them. he hears some spooky legends about the town, but doesn’t think much of them... that is, until his sister disappears. as Sam and his friends dig deeper into the town’s history to find any clues to his sister’s disappearance, they begin to realize there’s something deeply deeply wrong with their quaint little home

I’ve always loved horror that’s ‘mundane’ enough to be done by regular humans, but vague enough that it could actually be supernatural, under the right circumstances-- and this is one of those mysteries that keeps u guessing until the VERY end. my mind felt like that Pepe Silvia corkboard meme the first time I listened to this, I was losin’ it. this is also prolly one of my favorite examples of MCP’s talent as a narrator, b/c he adds in his own subtle foreshadowing with his voicework, and it blows my mind every time I listen to it again

also worth mentioning there’s a (3.5 hr) sequel! since the horror/mystery is basically done after the first one, the sequel is mostly suspense/thriller and character closure. if ur just here for the horror/mystery and the gut-punch of that first ending, then the sequel isn’t necessary. but if you want more closure for our dear sweet cast who deserve so much better, then by all means!

TW: the ending involves heavy sexual abuse (involving underage girls, no less), part of which is graphic. like I know I joke abt having to take breaks after reading emotionally exhausting stories, but I genuinely had to take a couple days of recovery after this one-- and that’s from someone who’s p hardy to all kinds of graphic content. do NOT take this warning lightly if this is a sensitive topic for you

Tales From the Gas Station (10 hrs for free, otherwise ongoing)

Jack works at a gas station at the edge of a middle-of-nowhere town. Strange things happen at the gas station-- bipedal deer stopping by for a drink, dark gods leaving vague messages, fingers growing from the ground out back, sudden lawn gnome appearances-- All just a part of the daily grind, right?

so if I wanna be totally fair, this is more a rec for Night Vale fans than anything (tho the TMA/WTNV overlap seems to be p significant). the comedic, nonchalant tone taken towards everything supernatural and horrific is p much 1:1 WTNV. I’ve genuinely cried laughing at some of the fuckshit that happens, esp anything involving Jerry. not to say that GST doesn’t have its heavy-horror moments, but the frequency is more comparable to Night Vale’s approach-- dark comedy definitely takes center stage, here. tho this also varies by the POV-- the “Finding Vanessa” arcs are told from the perspective of a more serious character, so the heavy parts are far more frequent and hit a lot harder

as for the time estimate, here’s where it gets a littleee bit complicated. the first version was put out for free, and read for free by MCP (among a few other narrators). this came out in several different parts, and the one video I linked above has compiled *most* of volume 1, but not the Halloween story, featured here. HOWEVER, the author has taken a second go at v1 and beyond, which is currently ongoing and available to buy as books or audiobooks ALSO narrated by MCP!

as for deciding which version to listen to, I’ll just try to describe the differences here. the first version was written entirely via Jack’s online forum posts, which were subject to more direct reader interaction and Jack’s scatterbrain. thus, the first version leaves a LOT more details up to reader interpretation/theorizing, straight up doesn’t have or explain certain plot arcs yet, and is very disorganized in terms of timeline all due to Jack’s canon memory issues. this all, personally, made it v fun and silly to follow, but I’m aware that’s not for everyone. the second version is written from a more standard first person narrative from Jack’s perspective. while Jack’s memory issues still make him an unreliable narrator (often *upsettingly* so in this version), the actual narrative is far more organized, complete, and easy to follow. the fun thing is that the first version can still be considered canon material to the second version, as Jack references making those very forum posts within the second version narrative. so, personally, I consider the second version to be the core cohesive story, while the first version is supplemental, fun material that provides more context for a few of the strange bits that happen in the story (like Jack’s ‘secret admirer’ makes more sense if u’ve listened to the first version). either way, the second version is the only way the story is going to continue (as far as I’m aware), so if you’re ONLY going to listen to one version of the story, listen to the second version

TW: for the first version, there are some uncomfortable jokes/implications at certain points-- associating villains/assholes with fatness and/or personality disorders is unfortunately a running theme, and a few off-color jokes are made abt some of Jack’s conditions (general mental health and his brief use of crutches). there’s also a point at which it’s implied that a specific one-off arc is a ploy to rape Jack, tho nothing actually comes of it beyond awkward scheming (but just in case, that story is specifically “Death at the Gas Station” at the very end of that long compilation, if u wanna skip it). for the second version, I believe the author was made aware of these issues and either straight-up removed or fixed most of them in some way. there’s just one point where an intentionally-questionable character uses the g*psy slur, and a few points where a regular commenter on Jack’s forum posts has w*ndigo in their username

in terms of gore for either one, uhhh maybe some descriptions of injuries? body horror? this one’s a lot harder to call for me, b/c the comedy softens the blow on a lot of the horror

Accounts From a Lonely Broadcast Station (5 hrs, ongoing)

Evelyn is the new voice of a small mountain town’s local radio station. her job is to take calls, play music (ALWAYS play the music), and broadcast emergency warnings whenever the fog rolls in from the surrounding forest. pretty standard stuff. she tries to make the most of it-- if only that damn crow with human eyes would stop watching her...

this one’s similar to Gas Station Tales with its heavy reliance on dark humor, but it takes itself a bit more seriously, with a more even split b/t genuine horror and comedy. also MCP brings in wonderful extra voice talent w/ this one, I RLY love Evelyn's va ;w;

My Friend Has Been Living in an Alternate Reality (4 hrs, complete)

op’s eccentric friend, Clint, turns up on op’s doorstep unannounced after several years missing. Clint vanishes again just as abruptly, leaving op with a journal detailing a horrifying, dangerous journey that’s almost too bizarre to believe, yet...

so this one’s more like an action/thriller with horror garnish, tbh-- very exciting and suspenseful! I love the weird, apocalyptic world Clint describes in his journals, and the societies that have cropped up around these hostile circumstances

My Name is Lily Madwhip (~8 hrs, ongoing)

Lily Madwhip sees things before they happen. they’re usually horrible things like deaths and injuries that she wishes she could prevent but often can’t. at least her best friend-- an angel possessing one of Lily’s dolls-- is around to provide advice

this one’s from the perspective of a little girl, and it leans into dark humor enough to soften at least some of the more traumatic moments. Lily’s young enough that she’s somewhat removed from the full gravity of the deaths around her, but the fact that it’s happening so frequently at all seems to be warping her perspective towards death to be more... casual? is that the right word? it’s just a rly interesting perspective to see for horror. also we’ve got another rly great guest va here for Lily~

TW: brief descriptions of injury, but they’re not graphic. frequent animal death.

The Showers (2.75 hrs, complete)

op recounts a scary story he heard from a teacher back in high school about a vague location and a terrifying encounter. he later ventures to find this location to see the truth for himself, but is it worth it?

this one’s a classic-- I think it was of the first creepypasta I listened to? not this version, but I wouldn’t be able to tell u which narrator it was at the time. I won’t say that this one’s the most unique story out there, but something abt it has always stuck with me?.... idk, I think the premise rly hooks me

so my brother -- a whole assload of a douche, yeah?

he has this great habit of only cleaning his room when it's practically impossible to even move around in there. resulting in at least -- AT LEAST -- 5 trash bags full of, well, trash. and i'm not talking grocery bags. i'm takking those heavy duty black bags that ppl use for yardwork. it's full of take out trash, old food, junk he brings home from work, soda cans, if it's unhealthy, he's got it.

not to mention all the plates and shit he leaves out on the railing until someone else cleans it up bc god forbid he does something around the house. last time i cleaned it off -- about 2-3 weeks ago, mind you -- here were seven-fucking-teen plates, four bowls, countless forks and spoons, and an armful of glasses. there have since been more placed on there with old rice and dried whatever-the-fuck-he-eats. but, the dished are beside the point.

you see, he works on the weekdays and is off on the weekends. the trash gets picked up on monday mornings. which makes the weekend a GREAT time for him to clean his room! yeah, no. instead, he waits until he gets home monday afternoon OR he cleans it tuesday. now, any sensible person with any consideration of the 3 other ppl living in the household, would either a) leave the bags in their room until they have the time to throw them out or b) throw them out immediately upon finishing the cleaning.

but no, not my brother. oh no. he leaves them right in the middle of the hallway, blocking any path and any door, until the next trash day. which, again, is a week away.

moving said trashbags to the side of the hallway does nothing bc the hallway is quite small and you still have to pick your way over them.

asking him, politely, to take them into the garage also does nothing but cause him to yell at you and tell you to do it yourself.

but that's not the funny part. the funny part is that he asked me to empty and load the dishwasher so he can bring the dishes that are in his room (believe it or not folks, but there are MORE of his dirty dishes than the ones he leaves in thr hall!!) downstairs. or, in his unspoken word, leave them piling up in the sink for someone else to do.

if it were someone else who asked, i would gladly do so. but, as i mentioned, he does jack shit around the house. he hasn't done the dishes in around... a year, he doesn't clean the bathroom at all, he stopped feeding the animals on his turn a few years ago so i had to take over, and more! that on top of the fact that i had just cleaned the kitchen a few weeks prior and he had already made it into a mess again (i gave up after the first couple days of trying to get him to clean his shit off and put it away), i wasn't gonna do a single thing for him!

to try and bribe me, he said he'd order me food(hah) and, get this, put his trash in the garage. that's right! as a reward for me doing his shit for him, he was going to do something that should really have been done in the first place.

of course, i say no. because, again, i'm not helping him when he acts the way he does.

his response? leaving every single one of his 6 damned trash bags piled up in front of my room and the bathroom.

i figured, it's his trash. if he's not putting it outside, then it should be in his room. so i decided that if he didn't take it out by the time he left for work today, i was going to put the bags back in his room. sounds reasonable, right? not harsh, not rude, just a reasonable act. it is, after all, his mess.

now i know my brother. my brother's a grade A, anger-riddle, asshat of a douche. so i know the consequences of me doing that. i KNOW he's going to get pissed and throw the bags in my room and yell at me. do i care? abso-fuckin-lutely not!

as expected, the bags are still right in the middle of the walkway and infront of the doors this morning! i put them in his room. not blocking his door or his bed or desk, mind you. they're tucked nicely out of the way so he can get to everything. unless he needed to get to his closet(which he doesn't use except to pile up more trash).

also as expected, he gets home and starts throwing the bags in my room, and yellinh when i tell him that he should take them outside, and that they don't belong in the hallway. i also say that it's not my trash. it's his. it doesn't belong in my room. he says, and i quote, "they don't belong in my room either."

well, my good bastardous sir, they do if you're not throwing them away at the moment. it as after all, yours.

he also adds on that "just for that, if i get sick then i'm getting you sick"

would you look at that! he's fucking threatening me for not doing, in my opinion, anything wrong!

and guess what? the bags are back infront of my door and the bathroom door! i hope he realises they're just going to end up back in his room tomorrow. even if his door is locked, i know where the screwdrivers are.

i just wish he realised there are other people living here than just him and that the other people here are not just here to slave away to him. this doesn't just go for his messes. it goes for him running the washer in the middle of the night(which would be perfectly fine if the washer didn't noisily shake the entire house). it goes for him yelling at his game in the middle of the night. and it goes for him leaving the very bright hall lights on IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAMNED NIGHT (actually scratch that. he leaves on every light even if he doesn't need the light at all).

remember how i mentioned that there were about 17 plates of his on the railing? he starts going off on me when there are no plates in the kitchen. all i can do is just stare blankly because if he just cleaned up after himself, we wouldn't have this problem.
